I own nothing you recognise. All direct quotes are acknowledged below the drabble.

Just a few things I feel I need to explain:
Firstly as I'm English, I use english spelling variations e.g. pyjamas not pajamas. To try and use the american english variations does funny things to my brain, sorry.

I tried not to be gloomy and dour, but I'm better at that stuff, sorry! I'm actually quite a lighthearted person really, honest!

I was thinking of writing a Tonks/Remus fic, but Cassirin's is so good that I'd be bonkers to try.

8. Potions

The potions classroom was full of white steam.

“Mr Pettigrew if you do not chop your scurvy-grass into equal pieces, your Befuddlement Draught will be completely ineffective.”

“S-sorry Professor S-s-slughorn”

Sirius hissed, “Not to mention the fact that it’s already the wrong colour, Wormy, get a grip!”

Peter looked at me imploringly. “Help me! Please!”

“Moony can’t help you in the O.W.L. Wormy, you have to learn how to do it yourself”

“But James, if I…”

“No Moony, he has to do it himself. Like Padfoot said, you need to get a grip” The last comment was shot at Peter.

27. Owl

Dear Lilly,

Thanks for the photograph; you’re right he does look just like James. What colour are his eyes? He doesn’t seem to want to wake up and show me! I’m not sure when I’ll be able to come and see you, things here are difficult. I’m waiting to hear from Dumbledore, I think he has a job for me to do.

It was too short but all the important things were said. I tied the letter to the owl’s leg and watched it fly away into the early morning.

Wedding.

59. Ignore

In the garden of her parent’s house, I was surrounded by the small knot of friends as we waited for Dora. Soft music started to play and I turned to see her float towards me. I was reminded, inexplicably, of a painting of Ophelia, by a weeping willow tree, her long wavy hair tumbling down her back. I tried to ignore the thought, so overly dramatic. But still the image persisted and now lines from Shakespeare, unbidden, sprang to my lips:

‘Doubt thou the stars are fire;
Doubt that the sun doth move;
Doubt truth to be a liar;
But never doubt I love.’



The painting mentioned is by Arthur Hughes painted in 1863/4,

The lines are taken from Hamlet, Act 2 Scene 2 by William Shakespeare. Hamlet says them to Ophelia, before all the betrayal, madness and murder really gets going and when he really does love her.)

Kreacher’s Escape.

93. Chicken

I picked at the chicken pie that was dinner.

Crack.

Standing in front of us was Kreacher, clean, tidy and terrified.

“What’s wrong Kreacher?”

“Miss Nymphadora, there are men in my master’s house. Talking of searching, to find Kreacher, to make him talk, to hurt him, so Kreacher came here”

“ Where’s Harry?”

“Master Harry went…” Kreacher threw himself towards the fire, Dora caught him. “All three were out? They’ve gone? ”

The old elf nodded.

“Kreacher, you must go to Hogwarts, stay out of sight, stay safe and say nothing about Harry to anyone, elf, wizard or otherwise. Understand?”

89. Past

I stood in front of the goblin, my father’s will in my hand.

“I need to see a copy of the balance for my vault, please.”

“Yes Mr Lupin, I’m sure you do.” He extracted a large account ledger. I looked at it, willing the numbers to be different than in the past.

“Will you be retaining the vault Mr Lupin?” It was a pointed question, the sneer in the goblin’s voice was obvious.

“No, I don’t think that will be necessary.”

His lips curled into an unpleasant leer. “You will have to avoid all the cut-purses your on the way home.”

98. Pyjamas

“Present time!” Andromeda called happily. She passed me a squashy gift. Dora took it from me to read the tag.

“To both of us? Are you economising Mother?” Andromeda smiled.

Together we pulled open the paper. Inside was a pair of soft, powder blue pyjamas, spangled with silver stars. In my size. I smiled, understanding, but Dora looked puzzled.

“How are we supposed to share these? I wear them one week and he wears them the next? Remus will think you’re cheap Mother!”

“Nymphadora, you wear the top, he wears the bottoms. That’s how it works.”

“Oh Merlin’s beard! Too much information!”

Bed Time Stories.
15. Room

“Bed time Remus! I’ll be up in five minutes.”

I rushed to the bookshelf in my room, pulling out a battered copy of ‘The Tales of Beedle the Bard’. My grandfather and I sat on the bed, and as he read I breathed in his scent, all hair potion and mints. “Just one more” was my constant refrain, until all of them were done.

“Did your grandfather read to you?”

A husky chuckle. “That he did lad, and I was like you, had me favourites”

“Tell me one! Please.”

“Alright, Once upon a time, there was a big, bad wolf…”


(This one is inspired by my grandfather, who had a husky chuckle, and told the best stories).

16. Dragonhide gloves

“ASHWINDER!” Sirius bellowed. I ran into the dining room.

And there it was, the thin grey serpent, its eyes glowing dangerously at us from under the teak dresser that had belonged to my great grandmother. It had laid fifteen ruby like eggs, which now throbbed with heat, threatening to set the whole cottage on fire. I froze them quickly, but taking no chances I quickly ran for my cauldron and dragon hide gloves. Levitating the eggs into the cauldron, I smiled up at Sirius.

“Well Padfoot, I really am never going to be rid of that revolting dresser, am I?”

22. Kneazle

The party was in full swing, celebrating Ron and Hermione becoming prefects. I watched as Kreacher weaved his way through the kitchen to the boiler room. Ron was eulogising about the merits of his new broom, Kingsley was quietly explaining what had happened during his latest exchange with Scrimgeour. Scrmgeour was unhappy with the lack of progress Kingsley was experiencing in finding Sirius.

Kreacher was now winding his way back towards the stairs and I realised that I wasn’t the only one watching. Crookshanks was following the elf, stalking him like prey.

I chuckled. “I’d swear that cat’s part Kneazle…”

Blondie.

31. Dress robes

I pulled on my dress robes, and looked at Dora. Her hair was blond today and she looked beautiful. My heart leapt when she spoke my name, but I didn’t hear what she said. I had tainted her, I could see it when I looked in her eyes.
“It’s time to go”.

Sat in the marquee, listening to the happy chatter bubble away, I stared at the golden balloons where Bill and Fleur would soon become bonded for life. Dora deserved all this, have people celebrate at her wedding. I had denied her that. The guilt pressed on me.

42. Portrait

“… she loves him! Don’t you want her to be happy?”

“HAPPY? Have you seen the state of her lately? She looks positively wretched! She’s miserable!”

“From what I understand, Remus is finding it difficult to accept that she loves him. He seems to think that he’s not good enough…”

“Of course he’s not good enough! He’s a werewolf!”

“Do realise who you sound like? That bonkers portrait.”

“How DARE YOU?”

“If I had to choose a son in law, I wouldn’t choose a werewolf, but I would choose Remus. He’s a good man. You’ll lose her if you’re not careful.”

11. History of Magic

I sank into the chair in the common room, exhausted. Hopefully I could rest before breakfast. Sunlight crept across the room.

“Remus, are you alright?” It was Mary.

“I’m fine Mary”

“Are you sure? You’re bleeding, that’s really nasty scratch”

I realised that she was right, my cheek was bleeding. “It’s fine Mary, honest.”

“Are you coming to breakfast? If we don’t leave now, we’ll be late for History of Magic.”

We walked together, I noticed her stealing glances at me every few steps. Did she know? Had she worked it out?

“Remus, would you like to go to Hogsmeade? With me?”

Catherine, Part One: Paris.
70. Teem

Sitting on the steps of the Sacre-Coeur, I watched as tourists teemed through the doors.

“Excuse me, do you speak English?”

A young woman was looking up at me.

“Yes, I’m English”

“Thank heavens! Do you know the way to Montparnasse?”

“Yes, you go…”

We fell into an easy conversation. She was intelligent, witty and laughed easily. An hour later, I was standing on the observation deck of the Montparnasse Tower, pointing out landmarks. Catherine shivered, and I gave her my jacket.

Later, I put my jacket on, I found her bracelet in my pocket. I smiled. I would have to see her again.



(The Sacre-Coeur is a beautiful Cathedral on the top of the hill in the Monmartre area of Paris. It has lots of steps to get up to it. The Montparnasse tower is the largest sky scraper in France, and although it is really ugly, it has beautiful views of Paris. It’s cheaper than the Eiffel tower and the lift goes almost all the way to the top.)

Catherine, part 2, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans.
82. Careful

“Here, try one of these”

Catherine chewed the Bertie Bott’s bean and looked at me in shock “But that’s Christmas cake!”

I laughed as she tried them out, getting lasagne, salmon and rather unfortunately, vinegar.

“I’ve never had these before. Are they new?”

“Not exactly…”

I started to explain about the wizarding world. I was being far from careful, rather rash in fact. What was it about this woman that meant I wanted to divulge my deepest darkest secrets to her? I looked into her eyes and realised that she wasn’t frightened, but excited.

“Can I go to Diagon Alley?”

Catherine, part 3: Scratches.
67. Quell

I couldn’t quell my nerves. I stole glances at her, I was scared that if I looked at her for too long she would disappear. She was too beautiful.

“Remus, you’ve got blood on your shirt.”

My insides froze.

“If you take it off, I can get the blood out before it dries.”

“Catherine, you have to understand something…”

My deepest secrets spilled out, being bitten, the Maurders, Lilly and Harry. I was sure that this was when she would leave, but she didn’t. She gently took off my shirt and carefully put a muggle remedy on my fresh scratches.

58. Hoot

The Owl hooted loudly at the window to catch my attention. Catherine let out a small scream of shock, which earned her another, indignant, hoot.

“Is it looking for you?”

“Yes, he’s brought my post. It’s on his leg, there look.”

It was a letter from Mary MacDonald, a friend of Lilly’s from the old days.

Catherine was fascinated by how the owl post worked. I had wondered if it was me that she loved, or the magic. I tried to think of how she cared for me after my transformations, the loving look in her eyes in those moments.

44. Ford Anglia

“Remus, look at this!”

Catherine came in from the kitchen, clutching a copy of the Evening Prophet. I looked at the photograph and saw what looked like a Ford Anglia, flying over London.

“Who’s done that?” I thought of Arthur Weasley, but surely he wouldn’t be that daft?

“It says that it was seen over Peebles, and possibly was headed for Hogwarts”.

At these words, James and Sirius leapt into my mind, laughing wildly. It was exactly the kind of stunt they would have pulled. Could this be Harry? I closed my eyes and pictured him at the wheel, his face alive with mischief.

Catherine, part 7: Dublin
48. Leprechaun

I found some leprechauns and she laughed as the gold they gave her disappeared in her hands. She was a whirlwind of joy; she had swept into my life, turned it upside down and made me a more complete person. I felt properly alive for the first time in years.

Laying on the grass in Phoenix Park, I listened as Catherine read;

“She smiled and that transfigured me
And left me but a lout,
Maundering here, and maundering there,
Emptier of thought
Than the heavenly circuit of its stars
When the moon sails out.”

I realised how selfish I was being, letting her love me.

73. Warn

“Remus?”

“Hmm?” I hadn’t really been listening to her, I was concentrating on reading my book.

“Can you?”

“Can I what?”

“Have children? Is it possible?”

Something in my chest curled up and died.

“I want us to be a family Remus. Maybe not now, but eventually”

“I’m not sure, I don’t know of any werewolf trying. They are…” but what they were, I couldn’t tell her. My mind warned my heart to be careful, but I could see children who looked like Catherine, playing in a park, happy voices calling me to join them, calling out to me.

“Daddy”.

Catherine, part 9; Goodbye.
84. Angry

She grabbed the front of my robes.

“What did I do wrong? I don’t understand this. I thought you loved me!”

“You didn’t do anything. It’s me, I’m so selfish. I do love you, that’s why this has to end”

“You’re not making sense Remus”

“You deserve someone who can make you happy… I can’t do that. I can’t give you what you deserve”

“I want you, I want us!” She was angry now.

“I can make it not hurt, for you. I can make you forget all about me.”

“NO!”

“Obliviate”

She looked at me blankly, not recognising me at all.

I walked around the art gallery, enjoying the new installation.

Then I saw her. Arm in arm with a handsome man, laughing and talking, arguing amiably about the paintings. He whirled her around, her long hair flew out behind her as he pulled her towards a large canvas.

I followed them, at a discreet distance, my eyes consuming her greedily.
They stood together, his arms wrapped around her, she leaned into him as she had once leaned into me. He kissed her tenderly on the top of the head. Their fingers became entwined.

She had moved on. She was happy.

Betrayal.
56. Fight

“Don’t you ever speak to me again”.

“You’re not serious?”

“You’re Sirius, I on the other hand, mean it”.

“What the heck did I do to you?”

“To me? Snape knows. HE KNOWS AND IT’S YOUR FAULT!”

James had never heard Remus shout like that. He was clutching his tawny hair, looking quite deranged. He lunged at Sirius, knocking an armchair over in the process. James watched as the fight progressed, Remus attacking and Sirius doing his best to protect his face.

Suddenly, the blows raining down on Sirius were punctuated with deep sobs.

“How could you do that to me?

Revenge
76. Zap

“Go on Moony”

“No”

“Go on, Moony, you know you want to”

“I really don’t, y’know”

“Just zap him, we’ll do the rest, he won’t see it coming and he won’t know it’s us”

“James, what did he do to you?”

“Levicorpus, dropped me on my head. Cheeky little…”

“Did you actually feel that Prongs? Or did you bounce?” Sirius chipped in.

I laughed. “Well in that case, when are we doing it?”

“Tomorrow, after lunch. With any luck they won’t find him ‘til well after dinner”

“Just… don’t tell me what you’re going to do with him. I don’t want to know.”

Disbelief.
6. Divination

I was sat in the library, trying to concentrate. Would I ever finish this essay? Distraction arrived in the shape of Lilly and Mary.

“Lilly, can you read this for me?” She took the parchment from me. “See, Remus, you’ve forgotten…”

Mary watched us over the top of her Divination book.

“You look like the cat that got the cream Mary.”

“I had a great Divination lesson, I Saw! I saw something for both of you.”

“Really?”

“Love! You’ll both get true love, you’ll both find the person who completes you.”

“Thanks Mary…” I didn’t believe a word of it.

Waddiwasi.
57. Gape

Peeves whizzed over head singing “Loony, Loopy Lupin” and pelted me with chalk. I grinned and whispered “Waddiwasi”, pointing my wand at Peeves open mouth. Chewing gum that was stuck to suits of armour and window frames pelted towards him and hit their target like small Quaffles. Peeves gagged and zoomed away, making very rude hand signals.

Wormy stared. “That was you!”

“Yes but don’t gape at me Peter, anyone would think that you’d never seen me do magic before.”

I heard a roar of laughter and saw James and Sirius coming towards me.

“Nice one!”

“Great work Moony!”
