Announcements and Letters

26. Quill

Rowena Ravenclaw sat in her office, her quill poised over the parchment, wondering how to end her letter. She had just spent the better part of the morning composing a notice to send to the Daily Prophet to announce the opening of Hogwarts, School of Witchcraft and Wizadry.

They were going to opening this coming September, and Rowena smiled at the thought of having the castle full of students. Oh, yes, cooperating with Helga Hufflepuff, Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin, her three dearest friends, in the creation of this school had probably been the best decision she had ever made.

Nuts Concealed

94. Allergy

Rowena sneezed violently. A moment later, she sneezed again, at the same time feeling her eyes well up.

If she wasn’t mistaken, they were also quickly becoming quite puffy.

“Is everything all right?” Helga asked her with concern.

“I think there were… ACHOOO!” she sneezed again. “Were there any nuts in this cake?!”

It was only then that Rowena noticed her two other friends, Godric and Salazar, sniggering at the other end of the table.

“Oh you little…” she swore at them, swiftly performing an anti-allergy charm on herself and rising from her seat. She would get them for this.

Disagreements

29. Pensieve

Rowena sat thinking in her office, thoughts of worry and confusion clouding her mind. Their recent spat with Salazar had left her anticipating the worst; it did not seem as if he would back down anytime soon, or at all, on the matter of admitting Muggleborns to the school.

“Stubborn old fool,” she muttered aloud to herself, withdrawing her wand and placing the tip at the side of the head.

She pulled it away, letting the silvery wisp float into the shimmering bowl in front of her, and praying against reason that this entire episode would end well after all.

Mistletoe

61. Kiss

Rowena fanned her flushed self with her hand, turning away from Helga to go and find another glass of punch. She had a sneaky suspicion she had had a bit too much already this Christmas Eve, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t have some morel; it was Christmas, after all.

“There you are,” she heard a voice whisper as someone came up behind her, firm arms slipping around her waist. “Will you look at this, fancy you and me together under the mistletoe...”

And with that, Godric kissed her for the first time, in this way beginning their long-lasting relationship.

An Invisible Surprise

41. Thestrals

Rowena had never been a fan of flying; in fact, she avoided brooms as much as she could. She much preferred to Apparate – even if this did mean that she frequently had to walk a long way to her destination.

She would never forget, however, her first interaction with a Thestral.

“Come on, Wen, up you go!” her brother had laughed cheerfully, hoisting her up onto something she did not see.

Something alive.

“What is…” she cut her own question off with a scream as the thing took off into the air. She would never forgive her brother for this.

Thief

53. Chase

“Wait, stop, NOOOO!” Rowena heard the shouts from the corridor by her office. Sighing, she got up and walked towards her closed door, fully intending to put the noisy students in their place.

“What’s happening here?” she asked, poking her head out from within her sanctuary reluctantly.

“He just stole my wand!” a first-year Slytherin pointed at a grinning Hufflepuff boy, probably a second-year.

“Return it at once! You can’t steal people’s wands!” Rowena scolded, and watched as the boy handed over the magical instrument.

Shooing the students away, she shook her head, smiling, as she closed her office door.

Valentine's Day

92. Chocolate

Rowena gave a small exclamation of surprise at the huge tawny bird which had suddenly landed on her desk. She had been sitting quietly, filing some reports on her Ravenclaw students before breakfast, and now she was so rudely interrupted…

“Be my Valentine,” was all the card read, but Rowena smiled, knowing exactly who it was from.

He probably sent it to her now so as not to cause a scene in at breakfast, and Rowena smiled to herself at Godric’s thoughtfulness as she opened the package.

It contained her favourite; Chocolate Frogs, arranged in the shape of a heart.

Nocturnal Noises

58. Hoot

The night’s stillness seeped through the half open window of Rowena’s bedchamber, which was located by the Ravenclaw Common Room. The peaceful noises of nocturnal creatures floated through the narrow space, but nothing seemed to disturb her sleep.

That is, until the huge barn owl flew by the glass, hooting to its mate perched on a nearby tree.

“What is… uuuh,” the famous witch slumped back onto her pillows, realizing what had awoken her.

Reluctantly, she rose form her bed to close her window, hoping that she would still be able to catch some rest before dawn’s light woke her.

Admittance

56. Fight

“Expelliarmus!” Salazar’s eyes glinted maliciously as he threw the curse at his once-best friend, Godric Gryffindor.

“What is going on here?!” Rowena burst into the Hall, only to find her fiancé hit by the disarming curse, Helga standing dumbfounded in the corner and Salazar lowering his wand.

“We just had a little disagreement, Godric here and I,” was all Slytherin said. “He thinks that admitting even more Mudbloods to the school is a phenomenal idea.”

“Just a small fight, don’t worry about it,” Godric muttered to her out of the corner of his mouth, never taking his eyes off Salazar.

Morning Coffee

99. Newspaper

Rowena had just been discussing the satisfactory amount of interest the magical world was showing their newly established school with Helga when her coffee went splattering across the table.

She sighed, cleaning it up with a flick of her wand and glaring at the offensive owl.

She valued her morning coffee greatly, especially on Thursdays when she had to teach first-years directly after breakfast, and she certainly did not appreciate her newspaper being delivered in such a clumsy fashion. She would have to make sure they sent out more experienced owls than the youngster currently twittering excitedly above her head.

Uninvited

34. Parseltongue

Rowena stared out of the window of her office, reliving the unbidden memory. She recalled how she and Helga, two childhood friends, had met Godric and Salazar so many years ago.

The two young witches had been at some Ministry Gala or other with their parents.

And then, chaos broke out as a huge serpent snaked into the room, having escaped from the Ministry Beast section. Rowena refused to consider what could have happened had a dark haired young wizard not stepped forward at that moment, speaking the language of snakes and commanding it to withdraw.

Of course, it did.

The Proposal

71. Untie

Rowena stared at the little box cradles in the palm of her hand, not believing her eyes. This was all going so fast, happening too soon…

She wasn’t sure she was ready for this.

“Open it,” his familiar voice whispered in her ear, his hands playing with the belt of her dressing gown, slowly untying the simple knot.

Not entirely aware of her actions, she did so, her eyes widening at the single ruby embroidered with sapphires which winked up at her.

Godric knelt in front of her. “Rowena Ravenclaw, will you do me the honour of being my wife?”

Beauty

23. Telescope

“Where are you taking me? Godric?” she felt him return to her and unfasten the material obliterating her vision.

They were at the top of the Astronomy Tower.

“I wanted to show you something special,” he told her, guiding her to what could only be one of the few telescopes on Earth.

She gasped, and stared at him as if seeking reassurance that this wasn’t a dream.

“Go on, look,” he nodded

She did. The stars immediately became larger, brighter, more magical… and then a shooting star came into sight.

Smiling, she made a wish to stay like this forever.

Detention

85. Snappish

Rowena glared at the two third-years in front of her, not at all appreciative of their smirks. She was forced two supervise the detention of two Slytherins on her and Godric’s anniversary.

That was the justice in the world.

“Professor… could I go to the loo?” one of the boys asked, his features the mask of feigned innocence.

Rowena gritted her teeth; this was the fourth time in an hour he had asked that.

“No, you could not, and if you have any sense you will stop asking me that every fifteen minutes,” she snapped, going back to her marking.

Intimidating Examiners

5. Astronomy

“Ten minutes remaining,” the examiner’s voice rung out in the tense silence which reigned at the top of the Astronomy Tower.

Rowena smiled from the shadow of the wall where she stood, watching her students take their end of year Astronomy exam. She didn’t have to be there, of course, but she had trouble sleeping, and she was curious as to how they were doing.

The Astronomy Professor nodded to her when she passed, and Rowena smiled back. No conversation was started, however; the regular Professors at Hogwarts seemed vastly intimidated by the four famous founders, the Astronomy teacher included.

History for the Future

14. Hogwarts, A History

“I can’t believe how popular and successful our school is becoming, and so fast, too!” Helga grinned as she entered Rowena’s office, where the remaining three founders were already waiting.

“That’s precisely why I wanted to talk to you,” Rowena began. “I have a feeling our school is going to outlast most, if not all, other magical schools. For the benefit of students in years to come, I think it would be a good idea to begin recording all that happens at the castle. A sort of… historical account.”

Godric let a smile spread across his face. “Hogwarts, A History”.

"Safe Flight"

73. Warn

Rowena rushed up to her office, cursing the fact that it was in such an inconvenient place, at the top of the tower. And she had no time for inconveniences right now; she had just stumbled across Salazar’s plans to purge the school.

As neither Godric nor Helga were at Hogwarts, there was no telling what the snake would do next.

Curse him, his arrogance and his pureblood priorities, Rowena thought, grabbing a quill and some parchment. I knew we shouldn’t have trusted him…

She attached the letter to her eagle, sending off her warning on the speediest wings in the country.

Slipping Potions

77. Cheerful

Rowena giggled at something Helga said to her, concerning the upcoming end-of-year feast. She didn’t know what had gotten into her; it seemed that whatever it was someone said to the clever witch, she found it amazingly amusing.

Something was most definitely wrong.

Taking another sip of her pumpkin juice, she noticed a knowing glance exchanged between two of her seventh year students.

“Pollter, Kraner! What’s going on?” she demanded, fighting the urge to laugh.

“Nothing, Professor,” they replied innocently as they passed by the staff table.

“Perhaps a Cheering Potion?” Helga whispered in her ear, realizing what was happening.

Lovers' Quarrel

59. Ignore

She frowned, trying to block out the sound of his footsteps on the cold, stone floor of the castle. He knocked, but Rowena did not respond, pretending instead that she was asleep – although she knew he was perfectly aware she usually read well into the night.

“Wen, you can’t ignore me forever,” his voice floated meekly through the thick oaken door.

She kept her mouth firmly shut.

A piece of parchment slipped under her door, and footsteps sounded once again, preceded by a quiet “Goodnight”.

Godric was apologizing to her again, but she still wasn’t ready to accept his regret.

First Year

25. Sorting Hat

Rowena directed the new students to the stool in front of the Great Hall, where the Sorting Hat was perched, waiting to be used. Although she would never admit this to anyone, she was worried; this was the first year of the school’s existence, and all the students, no matter what age, were to be sorted into the four houses representing the four founders of the castle.

It was as yet unknown whether or not Hogwarts would prove itself to be successful enough to exist in future times, although judging by the interest they already had, she hoped it would.

Lessons

3. Transfiguration

“Right, we’ll be learning how to transfigure hedgehogs into needles today,” Rowena pointed to the animals currently crawling all over the desks. “Please don’t let them escape while I show you the wand movement and incantation…”

An hour later, her class was full of mutterings, frantic wand movements, curses (she had no idea first-years knew such language!) and not a needle in sight.

She sighed, reminding herself that patience was a necessary characteristic for a teacher. All she needed was to let them practice, and constantly remind them to say the incantation while doing the wand movement, not before it.

A Late Owl

97. Dictionary

Rowena Ravenclaw opened her eyes that morning to the whisper of an owls’ wings as it took off from her windowsill. Looking down at the foot of her bed, she smiled; she would bet her hat that the bid which had just delivered Helga’s Christmas present.

The last of the Hufflepuff’s had always been rather forgetful…

She rose from bed and smiled. She might be a grown witch, but that did not mean she did not enjoy ripping the wrapping paper as much as any child.

And rip the paper she did, firstly on Helga’s present; it was a dictionary.

Fears

50. Boggart

Rowena allowed a small smile to grace her features as she thought about the brand new book lying in her office, just waiting to be read. She was on her way to doing exactly that, when the door of a nearby broom cupboard flew open and she saw Hogwarts castle burning.

She stopped, her mind telling her that this was only a stray Boggart, yet her heart constricted with fear for the students within the school, and the future of the Wizarding Community were Hogwarts to truly fall…

“Ridiculus!” Helga’s voice broke the tense, frightened silence as the castle disappeared.

Lesson Plan

8. Potions

“You cannot teach students how to brew Poly juice Potion!” Rowena yelled, pale with anger at Slytherin.

The green-robed wizard sighed with exasperation. “I told you, I think that at fifteen they are old enough to handle the knowledge, and it is something that might come in useful in the future. It’s for their good…”

“Don’t give me that codswallop because you and I both know it’s just your cunning excuse to teach the students Dark Arts,” Rowena’s eyes narrowed. “As long as we all rule the school together, you are not to teach them such magic and that’s that!”

Common Room Guardians

42. Portraits

“What’s been happening here?” Rowena asked, looking at an unfamiliar portrait which now hung in front of the entrance to the Ravenclaw common room she was trying to access.

“Password,” the fairy on the portrait demanded, sticking her nose in the air.

“Oh for the love of Merlin, somebody’s been switching portraits around again, haven’t they? Let me in, can’t you see I’m the Head of House?”

“No password, no entry,” came the high-pitched reply.

“You will be returned to the darkest corridor as soon as I find the original,” Rowena vowed, opening the doorway with magic only she knew.
