Fantastic Fizzing Bath Bombs!
photo editing by sweetpinkpixie

Thing's you'll need:

1 1/2 cups bicarbonate of soda
1/2 cup citric acid powder (available from chemists or health food stores)
sieve
sweet almond oil (available from chemists or health food stores)
*potpourri or herbal teabags such as chamomile, lemon, rosehip or peppermint
*scented oils (lavender, sandalwood, peppermint etc)
*food colouring
rubber gloves
moulds from craft shops

* - optionals (though I highly recommend the scented oils)

Depending on the shape and size of your mould, this recipe will make 4-6 bath bombs.

Method:

[1] Start by making the base mix. To do this, sift the 1 1/2 cups of bicarbonate of soda and the 1/2 a cup of citric acid in a large bowl. Then mix together well.

[2] To make individual bath bombs transfer 1/2 a cup of the base mix into a smaller bowl. This is the time to add your optional potpourri or herbal tea leaves.

[3] In a separate bowl prepare your food colour and essential oil mix, by combining 6 drops of an scented oil of your choice, 1/2 teaspoon of sweet almond oil, and a few drops of food colour-- until your desired colour is reached.

[4] Pour your oil/colour mix, into the bowl containing 1/2 a cup of the base mix, and then stir IMMEDIATELY with a spoon to avoid fizzing.

[5] Wearing rubber gloves, massage the mixture with your fingertips until it starts to clump when compressed in the palm of your hand. Do not do this with a spoon as the colour and liquid will not be distributed evenly.

[6] Using a tissue/paper towel, wipe a little bit of the sweet almond oil inside the mould, this will make it easier for you to remove later on. Fill the mould with the mixture and pack it in firmly.

[7] Repeat steps 2-6 to use the remaining base mix.

[8] Leave the Fantastic Fizzing Bath Bombs to set for at least 24 hours (36 hours is best). And then gently ease out of their mould. Place it in a small basket or simple wrap it in cellophane for a lovely gift idea.

Bath Bombs should be used in warm/hot water, otherwise they may not fizz...

Tricks of the Trade:

This gift has been made and tested by your little helper Hera and she has a few tips and tricks you might be interested in.

[1] If you don't have a mould, don't stress. Anything from a plastic cup to a silicone baking mould will do.

[2] In terms of colouring and essential oils, less is more.

[3] Potpourri, while it may be nice, it might not be everybody’s cup of tea. Perhaps ask yourself if the person you are making it for wants to bathe around in tea leaves or dried flowers.

[4] There WILL be a little fizzing every time you add the liquid mixture to the base mixture, DO NOT PANIC! just stir it in as quickly as you can and then jump right in with the fingers.

[5] I found that making the bath bombs in lots of two instead of individually was easier and the results were better too.

[6] The more liquid you add to your mix, the more it will fizz. Do note that if this is the case the mix will continue to rise and fizz. BUT it will still work. It just wont be as pretty.

[7] This activity isn't a very messy one, but gloves are a MUST, and if you're anything like me, it's probably best to wear black so if you do get food colouring on yourself, then you won’t see the stain.

Personalised Placemats!
photo editing by sweetpinkpixie

Thing's you'll need:

coloured card
christmas magazine cuttings
old wrapping paper
glitter
stickers, or anything else you might wish to include
glue
ruler
contact film/ laminating sleeves
guillotine/ scissors

Method:

[1] Start by designing your placemat. Personalise it with anything you like or anything you think the person will like.

[2] Cut out shapes/ arrange items on base card BEFORE gluing it on-- just in case you make a mistake.

[3] Once you are happy with the arrangement glue images/ letters/ ribbons/ glitter onto the card.

[4] Depending on what you have available, either laminate the card using plastic sleeves and a laminator OR by using contact film.

[5] When using a laminator follow manufacturers instructions.

[6] When using contact film, cut the desired size remembering to leave a thin border around the edges so that it doesn't peel away later.

[7] Peel off the plastic from the contact film and carefully place your placemat down front first, easing it down slowly from the corners and running your hand along the back to smooth out any bubbles. (It also helps to make sure your placemat decorations are not chunky.)

[8] Repeat step 6 on the remaining side of your placemat so that both sides are covered.

[9] Using a guillotine if you have one, tidy up the edges of your placemat, remembering to leave a thin border around the edge away from the card, so that it won't fray later on. Alternatively you may rule up the edges and cut along the line with a sharp pair of scissors.

If you have decided to laminate your placemat, be careful not to fold it, as that will cause creasing and air bubbles may appear.

Tricks of the Trade:

This gift has been made and tested by your little helper Hera and she has a few tips and tricks you might be interested in.

[1] Be creative, ANYTHING goes.

[2] Avoid using anything thick or chunky as it will not only make the placemat bumpy and rocky, but it will likely have air bubbles.

[3] For best results... I say use a ruler.

Gingerbread Harry's!
photo editing by sweetpinkpixie

Thing's you'll need:

melted butter or olive oil spray to grease
125g butter, at room temperature
100g (1/2 cup, firmly packed) brown sugar
125ml (1/2 cup) golden syrup/ maple syrup
1 egg, separated
375g (2 1/2 cups) plain flour
1 tbs ground ginger
1 tsp mixed spice
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
plain flour, to dust
150g (1 cup) pure icing sugar, sifted
8-10 drops red liquid food colouring
8-10 drops yellow liquid food colouring
piping bag or plastic bags
thin ribbons

Method:

[1] Using an electric beater, beat the butter and sugar in a bowl until pale and creamy. Then add the golden syrup and egg yolk and beat until combined.

[2] Stir in the flour, ginger, mixed spice and bicarbonate of soda.

[3] Turn out the mixture onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. Press the dough into a disc shape, cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 30 minutes to rest.

[4] Meanwhile, place egg white in a clean, dry bowl. Use an electric beater to beat until soft peaks form. Gradually add icing sugar and beat until stiff peaks form.

[5] Divide the icing into two bowls. Add the food colouring to the bowls of icing mix and stir until combined. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge.

[6] Preheat oven to 180°C. Brush 2 baking trays with melted butter, or spray lightly with oil.

[7] Roll out the dough until it's about 4mm thick. Use a 9cm gingerbread man cutter to cut out shapes. Place on trays about 3cm apart. Repeat with any excess dough. Using a tooth pick make a small hole in the Gingerbread Harry's head just big enough to thread a thin ribbon through.

[8] Bake in oven for 10 minutes or until brown. Remove from oven. Transfer to a rack to cool.

[9] If you don't have a piping bag just place the prepared icing in small plastic bags. Cut a small hole in a corner of each bag and then pipe the icing onto the gingerbread Harry's to decorate.

Tricks of the Trade:

This gift has been made and tested by your little helper Hera and she has a few tips and tricks you might be interested in.

[1] The dough is rather crumbly, but do not be discouraged. It works!

[2] Ease the Harry's out of the cutter gently so that his arms and legs don't snap off.

[3] Also be careful when transferring them to the baking tray.

[4] When piping the icing, it's best to test it a few times first, and don't worry too much if they don't look good, it's the taste that counts most. And they are YUMMY.

[5] Hang your Harry's on your tree, or simply stack him on a plate. Anything works!

CAUTION: Take care when using kitchen appliances. Parental supervision is recommended for children under 16 years of age. Or anyone who fails in the kitchen.

a Homemade Snow Globe!
photo editing by sweetpinkpixie

Thing's you'll need:

Any other type of jar with a lid
Florist clay and/or small pebbles/rocks/etc
Small figurine
Egg Shell and/or Glitter
Glue Gun or Sealant
Mineral Oil or Water

Method:
[1] Wash and dry your jar completely, including the lid. While you're at it, wash your figurine too to make sure that no gross dirt bits end up swirling around your scene.

[2] Attach figurine to inside of jar lid using florist clay. If you are using a small object, it's a good idea to build up the clay so the object will appear taller. If you are unsure, it is easy enough to check by placing the empty jar over your mound/figurine. Likewise, you can also use small pebbles and glue those to the lid first before gluing your figurine on top of those.

[3] Fill jar with water to within 1/2 inch (1 cm) of top.

[4] Sprinkle ˝ teaspoon of glitter, or “ snow” into water. Really, how much glitter and snow you use is up to you! Find a balance that suits your personality.

[5] Line inside of lid with glue.

[6] Insert figurine in water and screw on the lid (your figuring will be diving in head first)

[7] To make sure that nothing leaks out, apply a layer of glue around the rim of the lid to seal it shut. Let that stand dry overnight with the lid side UP.

[8] This next step is optional, but if you want to hide the lid a bit, you can attach a ribbon, felt, or some other decorative border around the base with glue. There is a lot you can do to give your snow globe a personal touch, so be creative! The possibilities are endless so have fun!

Tricks of the Trade:

This gift has been made and tested by your little helper sweetpinkpixie and she has a few tips and tricks you might be interested in.

[1] When picking your item, be creative! That being said, make sure whatever you use is waterproof and won't dissolve or rust.

[2] Make sure the objects are secure in the clay, you could even glue them for added security. Wouldn't want your figure to fall out of the clay after all!

[3]When adding water, you should use cold instead of hot since it tends to cloud and could also make some icky stuff come off your clay when you do the next step.

[4]Glitter and egg shells sink very quickly in water, so mineral oil or baby oil are recommended.

[5] Be careful not to put TOO much glitter in You won't be able to see your figurine or scene anymore.

[6] When using egg shells, I recommend putting them in a ziplock bag and crushing them with a rolling pin.

[7] I highly recommend a hot glue gun for this. I didn't have one, so waiting for my glue to dry was painful!

CAUTION: Adult supervision is required if you are using a glue gun or sealant. Sealants often give off toxic fumes, so be careful!

Holiday Potpourri!
photo editing by sweetpinkpixie

Thing's you'll need:

dried orange rind of one orange (you can get these from some craft shops OR make it yourself)
2 cinnamon quills
2 tbs cloves
3 tbs aniseed stars
10-15 drops of essential oils (lemon myrtle, bergamot, fennel are recommended)

Depending on how much you want to make, adjust the quantity. The above measurements are for a small bowl/basket of potpourri.

Method:

[1] To make the dried orange rind, if you don't already have them. Simply slice off the orange peel from a fresh orange, remembering to remove the flesh. Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Celcius (180 fan forced). Lay out the strips of orange peel onto a non stick oven tray and place in the oven for approximately 20 minutes. DO keep your eye on it so that it doesn't burn. Once they're dry, leave them out to cool.

[2] Combine all your ingredients in a bowl. It's best to wear gloves when doing so because otherwise you will have incredibly smelly hands.

[3] Then present your potpourri in a basket or a small bowl and it's ready to be gifted.

Tricks of the Trade:

This gift has been made and tested by your little helper Hera and she has a few tips and tricks you might be interested in.

[1] This is SUPER easy to make and it smells AMAZING!

[2] Experiment with different oils or add different spices, you really can't go wrong.

[3] If you choose to dry out your own orange peel, maybe trim off the burnt edges (this will happen) but the rest is all good. It should be firm and crunchy to the touch.

[4] I found that it was better to break up my cinnamon quills into quarters, that way it looked a little more rustic and not so.. chunky? and the scent was able to permeate more. But certainly you could leave them whole.

CAUTION: Take care when using kitchen appliances. Parental supervision is recommended for children under 16 years of age. Or anyone who fails in the kitchen.

a Homemade Lantern!
photo editing by sweetpinkpixie

Thing's you'll need:

plain white paper bag
decorative single hole punch
LED candle light(s)

All these items are available from a good crafts store.

Method:

[1] Start by cutting off the top portion of the paper bag (depending on how tall you want your lantern to be).

[2] Then by using a decorative single hole punch, punch holes/shapes into the paper bag. For my demonstration I've used a snowflake hole punch, but anything works.

[3] Turn on your light(s), pop them in the bottom of your bag and enjoy the flickering glow. One light will work, but feel free to use more if you wish.

Tricks of the Trade:

This gift has been made and tested by your little helper Hera and she has a few tips and tricks you might be interested in.

[1] If you can't get your hand on a decorative hole punch, you can still use a normal one, but work out a design before you start punching.

[2] If like me you get a terrible hole punch which doesn't reach far enough down the length of the paper bag, using scissors cut down the middle and then sticky tape the inside up when you're done. The effect is still the same.

CAUTION: Do NOT use real candles in a PAPER bag... it's a bit of a fire hazard.

On the seventh day of Potter, my true love sent to me ....

a Dementor on my Christmas Tree!
photo editing by sweetpinkpixie

Thing's you'll need:

doll
paintbrush
black acrylic paint
grey acrylic paint
black cardboard
tape
scissors
pliers
black specialty fabric
small rubber band (clear or other)
sewing needle
black thread

Method:

[1] Start by cutting off the length of the dolls hair. Then using pliers pull the roots out. (Note, some dolls do not insert the hair directly into the dolls head and use a wig instead - these are easier to remove).

[2] Paint the doll using the black acrylic paint and then leave to dry. (You can paint the whole thing, though you only really need to paint the top half, but leave the lower half of the arms free.

[3] Then paint the dementors arms grey. (You can use black as the under coat if you wish OR paint black veins onto the grey arms.)

[4] Attach the cardboard to the waist/thighs of the dementor in a cone shape and secure tightly with some tape.

[5] Taking the black specialty fabric drape it over the top of your dementor and fashion it a hood. Do this by folding back the edges slightly until you achieve the desired effect. Place a rubber band around its neck to hold the shape temporarily.

[6] Using the thread and sewing needle, stitch the hood together under the dolls chin. Then go around and thread the fabric close around the neck to achieve the hooded-cloak shape. Once you have done this you may remove the rubber band.

[7] Cut two small holes for the dementors arms and pull them through. Now he's ready to be placed on top of your tree to suck the life and joy out of Christmas!

Tricks of the Trade:

This gift has been made and tested by your little helper Hera and she has a few tips and tricks you might be interested in.

[1] Find some nice textured fabric for the best effect.

[2] Also make sure that your dolldementor is a proportionate size to your Christmas tree. Otherwise he might fall off the top or eat it whole.

[3] Be patient with the paint... it DOES take some time to dry.

[4] Alternatively... IF you don't want him on your tree. You COULD just keep him as an awesome doll.

On the eighth day of Potter, my true love sent to me ....

a Golden Snitch Bauble!
photo editing by sweetpinkpixie

Thing's you'll need:

small gold christmas bauble
paintbrush
gold acrylic paint
pliers
craft wire
white crepe/tissue paper
PVA glue
super glue (OR blue tac works too XD )
silver OR light gold glitter

Method:

[1] Start by drawing your snitch wing on a piece of paper. Once you are happy with your design, take a length of craft wire and use the pliers to help achieve the shape you have drawn.

[2] Once you have done this it's time to prepare the wings. Get your white crepe/tissue paper and brush a thin but even layer of PVA glue onto it, then place your craft wire wing onto it and glue another side of crepe/tissue paper onto it. (depending on the qaulity of your glue, you may need to add it to both sides) Then leave it to dry. Once it is dry cut any excess crepe/tissue paper off. Please allow for drying time.

[3] Brush both sides of the wing with PVA glue and dip/cover it with glitter. Light gold or silver looks best. Please allow for drying time.

[4] Using super glue, or another strong glue, or alternatively blue tac, attatch the wings to the christmas bauble.

[5] Using the gold acrylic paint, paint on the snitch grooves/design to make it look more authentic. Also paint over the glue/blue tac. Please allow for drying time.

[6] Don't throw it and chase after it, instead be a good sport and hang it on your tree. TA DA! All done.

Tricks of the Trade:

This gift has been made and tested by your little helper Hera and she has a few tips and tricks you might be interested in.

[1] I used a dark grey/silver glitter, I suggest silver silver or light/pale gold.

[2] Do be patient and wait for it to dry (unlike me).

[3] Be careful with the glitter, it gets EVERYWHERE. I swear its worse than sand.

[4] A strong glue is recommended, though if you're lazy and impatient like me blue tac works just as well (short term), though I don't know how long it will last before the wings fall off. -- Then just put them back on, right?

Mod Podge Letters!
photo editing by sweetpinkpixie

Thing's you'll need:

pages of text from a book or print offs of your favorite Harry Potter related items, spells, pictures, etc. OR anything of your choice
paper mod podge (can be found at any craft store)
a bowl of water
a sponge brush
wooden letters (can be found at any craft store)
gloves (optional)

Method:

[1] Tear your pages into strips of various shapes and sizes. I usually try to get them into chunks that are atleast an inch wide by about two inches long. The more random you make them the better they will work.

[2] Place these strips of paper into the bowl of water and let them soak for a few minutes. The longer you let them soak the easier they will be to shape.

[3] Take your sponge brush and brush some mod podge on the front and back of your wooden letter. Don't worry about it being too thick. It will dry clear.

[4] Now grab a strip of paper from the water bowl and shape around your wooden letter. Repeat this process until your whole letter is covered.

[5] Then take the sponge brush and brush one more layer of mod podge on the front and back. Let your letter sit out for atleast six hours or until it's not wet to the touch on a flat surface. Remember once it dries there won't be any white streaks on it and it won't be shiny.

Tricks of the Trade:

This gift has been made and tested by your little helper Lezleighd and she has a few tips and tricks you might be interested in.

[1] Be careful on the edges because they can be tricky. It's best to fold it like you would if you were wrapping a present.

[2] As you go along you may want to add more mod podge to help shape the pages and make them stick.

[3] They make wonderful and unique gifts.

the most Powerful Wand in the World!
photo editing by sweetpinkpixie

Thing's you'll need:

8 1/2 x 11 plain white paper (printer paper)
hot glue gun and LOTS of glue sticks
sponge paint brush
paint (usually a brown, red, green, black, silver and/or gold)
scissors

Method:

[1] Begin by rolling paper into a narrow funnel. You want one end to be just a bit wider than the other.

[2] Stick the tip of the glue gun into the narrow end of the wand first. You are going to fill the entire tube with glue. This part can be tricky. Don't miss any sections. The wand will be too flimsy. Squirt glue into the gun until you can see it at about 2/3 - 3/4 of the way full through the entire tube. Don't let it go too far down the tube or it will sneak out the other end and burn you. Allow to cool for a moment.

[3] Fill the remainder of the way, through the wider end and allow to cool completely. Tube should be entirely full. When cooled it will be pretty solid. Each wand will take approx. 3-4 hot glue sticks.

[4] Squeeze a small bead of glue on the top or narrow end of the wand. This will give the wand a nice rounded finish on top.

[5] When that cools, flip the wand over, cut the paper and glue the flap so that it is sealed on the bigger end.

[6] Once the wand is completely cooled, using a sponge brush, lightly brush your base paint layer. Have fun with your paint. You could even do another layer with a dark green or something to give it some more personality. It's yours so have fun!

[7] When the paint is completely dry, use the hot glue gun to carefully draw designs on your wand with the glue. You can do vines with flowers, "knots" like wood, spirals, snakes, anything! Get creative! Just be careful because this is the part where you can burn yourself!

Optional: Tip the wand vertically and squirt a bit of hot glue on the top and let it drizzle messily around the tip. Then, holding it upside down do the same, just a bit thicker, so it sort of runs down like candle wax-ish.

[8] Now mix a little bit of the base color and the second coat color together and paint over the glue once it is completely dry.

Optional: Brush a light coat of Mod Podge over the top to seal it all together. It made it look polished, not glossy.

Tricks of the Trade:

This gift has been made and tested by your little helper Lezleighd and she has a few tips and tricks you might be interested in.

[1] And that's it...the wands are super awesome and personalized. I just love them and my niece and nephews thought they were real.

[2] Wands are usually between 9 and 14 inches in length. Any shorter and the wand will just look too short, and any longer will make it look more like a short staff than a wand.

[3] Use your own judgment to determine a good thickness for the wand. It should feel comfortable in your hand, but not be so thin it snaps easily.

CAUTION: Adult supervision is required if you are using a glue gun. Be careful!

On the eleventh day of Potter, my true love sent to me ....

a Time Capsule!
photo editing by sweetpinkpixie

Thing's you'll need:

a plain box (available at all craft stores)
acryllic paint - your choice of colour(s)
other accessories (ribbon, glitter, photos, text etc.)
PVA glue
paint brushes
crepe paper/tissue paper (for presentation)

Method:

[1] Work out your design. Anything goes. Feel free to experiment with images, text, shapes and colours. You could make it about a person, about a year e.g. 2011, a place etc.

[2] Once you've worked out your design, it's time to execute your ideas. Start painting, glueing etc. Remember to allow for drying time between applications of paint and glue.

[3] After your design is complete, fold or roll up your crepe paper/tissue paper and cut thin strips to make a soft bed of paper for presentation purposes. Place these in the box/ time capsule and fill it with items that mean something to you/ the person you are gifting it to.

Tricks of the Trade:

This gift has been made and tested by your little helper Hera and she has a few tips and tricks you might be interested in.

[1] Be creative! Anything works, but it's always best to pick a theme that you or your friend can relate to. Clocks, hold a special meaning for myself and a friend. Haha.

[2] As always be careful when you're painting, and be patient.

[3] Planning your design is important, otherwise you might make a mess of it. So plan, plan, plan!

On the twelfth day of Potter, my true love sent to me ....

a Christmas Wrapper Bauble!
photo editing by sweetpinkpixie

Thing's you'll need:

a plain bauble (available at all craft stores)
acryllic paint - your choice of colour(s)
left over wrapping paper
PVA glue
paint brushes

Method:

[1] Not sure what to do with your left over Christmas wrapping paper? But don't want to waste it? ... here's the plan. Using any design of your choice, whether it be eclecticly ripped/shredded paper or carefully cut out stars/other shapes, use these to make your very own christmas bauble.

[2] Start by painting your bauble a base colour (unless you plan on covering it all with wrapping paper, in which case just brush glue onto it.) Allow to dry (if going the glur option do NOT allow to dry.. of course).

[3] Using a paint brush apply a thin and even layer of glue onto the bauble and attatch your wrapping paper shapes. For a glossy finish brush on a very thin layer of glue on top and allow to dry, this will also help hold the paper to the bauble.

Tricks of the Trade:

This gift has been made and tested by your little helper Hera and she has a few tips and tricks you might be interested in.

[1] Super easy and a great way of utilising left over bits and pieces from your crafty holiday season. My design was super simple, becasue I fail at crafts (in case you couldn't tell) but be as creative as you want to be.

[2] Majke one each year as a memory of gifts/people you shared Christmas with that year?

[3] You really can't go wrong... but again be patient with the paint drying or else you could potentially look like a bleeding unicorn like me.
