Default Transfiguration Lesson 1

Nope, you haven’t accidentally stumbled into the hall of mirrors. Yep, this is definitely the disused classroom where Professor Barlow is ready to crack on with not only the last lesson of the day but the last lesson of the week. You might have that Friday feeling but slacking off today could result in messy consequences.

All desks have been temporarily vanished and in the space they once occupied, you’ll instead find a large semi-circle made up of individual, full-length mirrors. Hopefully you’re not having a bad hair day.

“Come in, come in, find yourself a mirror to stand in front of,”
Barlow brightly instructs as you enter, “we’ll be starting shortly.”
OOC: Hello and welcome to the first RPed Transfiguration class of the term! Gonna be moving things forward in 24 hours give or take (: Class has started!

"Kaiser," Kaiser said helpfully. Mister Kaiser or just Kaiser, either of those worked. For all intents and purposes, it served as a surname and a first name. He then gave a small nod. Yes, Kaiser had gathered that the mirrors would serve some sort of purpose at some point in this lesson, but he'd deal with that... later.

If he noticed the reluctance that Eiji showed as he came over to stand near him, he didn't take any offence. Partly because it was quite difficult for Kaiser to be offended by anything, but mostly because he just never took anything Eiji said or did personally. Maybe if the other boy came right up to him and said 'your mother was a murtlap and your father smelt of crazyberries' it would be a different story, as that was quite the specific insult.

Anyway, Kaiser gave the other Slytherin boy a very subtle nod of the head in greeting, and left it at that.

Right. Transfiguration. Barlow. Terrible jokes that went right over Kaiser's head. Aaaand... a question. He raised his hand, ready to make a smart aleck comment about how one thing transfigured an object and the other one charmed it, before he realised he didn't even have the energy to spare on a joke answer. He let his hand drop again.

Did the difference really matter? As long as you could cast the spells, you were good, right?

As soon as the professor started, Jillian redirected her attention to him and not the mirror. What are they going to do in class today? Is it going to be one of those amusement parks where one attraction is like a house of mirror. She figured it could be that considering this is a Transfiguration class. Okay, focus on the teacher.

She smiled when the professor made a dorky pun... 'reflect'. Yeah Jillian admits that is a bit funny. Moving on, she's quite intrigued why there are so many mirrors for today's class. And also can't they go back to normal classes where the desks and chairs are present?

Oh right. The question.
Jillian didn't really think about it too much but she raised her hand to give a short and simple answer. "I think it has something to do with the change that will happen in object/target." she answered, well she's not sure if it correct. So here's to hoping that it is. "I mean... To transfigure means to transform a target into something different, as to placing a charm on a target doesn't really mean that there will be transformation involved." Does that sound right? Maybe.

"Well you transfigure something you change it's physical form right? And with charms you don't do that." There that about summed it up right? Good enough, Blake was more interested in what he thought was a pimple on his nose. He leaned into his mirror a little closer to examine said 'pimple' ... well maybe it was more of a black head. Should he squeeze it???? Or would that draw too much attention .....

...Har har. Reflect, huh. Trust Professor Barlow for humour like that, which is very much along the lines of Drewett's humour. The Ravenclaw sighed a little and forced a tiny smile to acknowledge his professor's attempt at making them laugh.

Anyway.

Everyone else had seemed to hit the bull's eye with the difference between charms and transfiguration. Drewett raised his hand. "To transfigure is t-to alter a living or inanimate object's composition, sir..." he shared. "On th-the other hand, to charm is to, like everyone said, change its function." And he was back to busying himself by taking down more notes as most Drewett Gunters do.

No need to look frightened? Lucas..... paused. He trusted Barlow, he did. The man had even said 'promise', which added some weight to everything he said. But...... well, there were still mirrors here. And he was still uncomfortable at the idea of spending a whole lesson looking at his face. That was too long.

When it was time to move on, he looked away from the mirror and over at Barlow, instead. The jokes? The fourth year let out a small snort of laughter at the puns, feeling a little lighter already. How long had the man prepared for that? A while? He had a funny feeling that this was in the man's plans for the lesson.

Please continue with the puns.

What's the difference between Charms and Transfiguration? Well, a lot of people had said some very good answers that were right. Answers that he should probably be writing down in his notes. But his mind was racing and.....

...... Oh!

The hand went up in the air. "Well, if we look at an object, Transfiguration is about what the object is but Charms is about what the object is doing." Or how it was presenting itself? "It's a matter of form vs function, y'know? Transfiguration is about form but Charms is about..... function?" Yeah. Yeah.

There were some grey areas but he..... wasn't thinking about that.

ina kept trying to guess the purpose of the mirrors until Professor Barlow's voice jerked her out of her thoughts. Yes, she was wondering why the mirrors were here… but it looked like that was going to remain a mystery for now. She hoped the question would provide some clue, but no such luck. Not unless they were going to somehow use the mirrors to compare and contrast the effects of transfiguration vs* charms, but that seemed a little too out there, even for Barlow's class.

She considered the question for a minute. She knew the difference between charms and transfiguration; how could she not when two of her dads were former charms professors? They'd never let her live it down if she didn't! She knew charms changed the properties of an object, while transfiguration changed the object itself… but her classmates had already said as much. What could she add to the explanation that hadn't been said? She racked her brains until finally something came to her. She raised her hand, and after being called on, she said, "Transfiguration changes an object's molecular structure, whereas charms add or change a specific attribute of an object while leaving its molecular structure intact. For example, if we were to place a shrinking charm on these mirrors, it would make them smaller, but they'd still be mirrors. But if we were to transfigure them into something, say sand, they'd become that object and cease to be mirrors." Did that make sense? She hoped it did! That answer was a lot more wordy than she expected!

Alessandro was exceptionally well behaved. Until he wasn't. He stood in front of the mirror and attended Barlow as the Professor searched for the point. He even spared a moment to return a soft smile to Gunnar. It was nice to see any of his friends after the events of the last two weeks.

In light of the last two weeks, frankly, Alessandro Toussaint had not learned his lesson. Or perhaps, more aptly, he had not learned the lesson he supposed Trent was wishing for. In future, he would be more discreet because Jove was still very much on his radar.

But again, to his original point, he was being exceptionally well behaved. He stood up straight. He considered the Professor's question and even offered an answer of his own. Considering he had never met Kaiser's mum, Eiji would not know what she smelled like so that would be a very peculiar insult to offer up anyway. What he could offer up, however, was a return head nod. One he did easily and just before class officially began.

And Eiji was not entirely keen on offering up any sort of reply really. Especially since his thoughts could only circle back around to his mum and what she used to do when he was a baby to make him laugh..and then later on with Rebecca. Then there came the horror when Rebecca sneezed and...well...her hair suddenly streaked magenta. He blamed the mirrors, which he was now reluctantly staring into and honing in on his own hazel-green eyes. Which reminded him of a story mum once told about her own eyes to mask their purple color.

So, amazingly enough, he found himself raising his hand to answer. "Charms do not alter the properties of the object they are cast upon. Like if I were to magically alter my eye color dark brown...my eyes are still my human eyes. But if I were to magically swap them out with those of an eagle...then that would be a spell, transfiguration magic. My eyes no longer my human eyes but those belonging to that of an animal."

It attracted less attention, you see. Though she still caught Dorian’s. Well, she happened to like him so he was greeted with one of her rare, tiny smiles. “Hi there, Dorian.’’ She looked back at her own reflection. “I really hope we don’t have to change the colour of our hair. Our eyes wouldn’t be so bad though…” Yes, she was talking to the Ravenclaw.

She watched the door swing shut. This meant they were about to get started. That intense, cool gaze fixed on Barlow. Oh har, har. He had jokes, that one did. Claudine did not crack a smile. As for the question... “Placing a Charm is means to put something additional onto a target,’’ Claudine spoke up, hand in the air. “Transfiguring would mean changing your target altogether.’’ She was uncertain of the first part of her answer.

No one needed to know that.

Oh, right. Claudine. Wasn’t that what he’d said?

He nodded at her answer. Seemed like she had the gist of it, not bad going for a first year.

It was basic, but it was always good to go back to the foundations of the subject.

In a very Hermione-Granger-esque fashion, Nettie's hand shot in the air. "Charming something changes the action of the object but keeps its original form intact, whereas transfiguration changes the actual FORM of an object, which often changes the action as well," she explained. Wow. That sounded extremely Ravenclaw even for her. Oops. She couldn't help it, though - Transfiguration really got her brain moving.

Had the Ravenclaw Prefect swallowed a textbook? Sure sounded like it. Her answer was a good one though and Barlow nodded in encouragement.

But class was beginning now, so any conversation would have to wait as he turned his attention to the front of the room. A simple, basic question, and he raised his hand.

But he started to lower it again as Trinetta provided a somewhat concise summary of the difference. Was there really more to add? Gunnar lifted his hand into the air once more to expand on that.

"In addition to sometimes changing the form of an object, transfiguration changes the properties or the nature of an object, whereas a charm doesn't change the object's identity." Just a little expansion on his fellow prefect's answer.

“Yes indeed, thank you Gunnar.” Maybe this recap wasn’t necessary after all, seemed they all knew what they were talking about.

And yep, he had PUNS for days too. "What a knee slapper," Bernadette chuckled to her reflection, literally slapping her knee. Ooh, were they going to enchant mirrors today? That would be DEAD USEFUL. And then she could go home this summer and mess with her mum SO BAD. Yesssssss... Oh wait, there was a question?

Bernadette glanced around, wondering if she should be taking notes? These other kids were MUCH more informed... ummm, she raised her hand to hazard a guess. "Transfiguration sometimes involves animals, like," what were those wizard people called? "Animorphs." That was it. "Charms would wear off faster than animorphaguesses."

Scratch that. THIS is why recapping was important. “Animagus,” Barlow corrected her with a smile. He was just glad to see the younger ones making an effort. “And you’re quite right there are a number of transfiguration spells that involve changing the form of animals.” GOOD JOB.

Like the chair to cat spell?" Avalon was fairly certain she had heard of that one before. And she was pretty sure that you couldn't do something like that with a simple charm. "And with a charm, you wouldn't be able to do that." I mean, you can charm something to make it dance, but you can't actually make it alive, she thought. “Correct…” Sort of. To a point. “However, it’s important to remember that while transfigured animals may appear to be sentient, living beings, they’re not.” That hedgehog transfigured from a pincushion? Not TECHNICALLY a real hedgehog with free will, but he understood her point.

Another good explanation along with another good example. He knew of some adult wizards who still struggled to get their head around the finer details and distinctions but the majority of these kids already seemed to have it down pat. He was impressed.

“Seems like you’ve all got the basic understanding of what is considered transfiguration and what is considered charms.” Most of them anyway. “There’s definitely some overlap between the two branches of magic but it’s important to remember that we charm an object to change it’s function… to make it do something.” Did that make sense? “And when we transfigure an item, we are changing it’s identity. The way it appears.” In layman’s terms anyway, it was all very complicated.

“That being said…” Did he still have everyone’s attention? It was the last lesson of the week but he didn’t want anyone dropping off. “Tell me, what do you know about human transfiguration? Miss Friday already mentioned animagi, who has any more examples of human transfiguration?”

See, they were getting to the good stuff. Wakey wakey.

OOC: WooOOoooOo. Thanks for participating so far, you’re all great. Another 24 hours or so for Question 2!

Ani-MAAAAAGUS, or ANI-MAAAAGI, not animorphs. Right. Bernadette was going to remember that! She tore her eyes away from her reflection to nod solemnly at the professor, and briefly wonder if she should be taking notes?, then went back to staring at herself. Hang on, was there a bit of spinach in her teeth? All this H E A L T H Y school stuff was starting to get on her last nerve! She started digging it out with her pinky finger.

But soft! She'd gotten a mention by the teacher! Bernie swirled away from her reflection to BEEEEAAAAM in his direction spinach tooth and all. She was Miss Friday, did they all notice that? DID THEY DID THEY DID THEY HUH? Of COURSE her hand popped in the air again, honestly before a thought popped in her head, because she LIKED TRANSFIGURATION.

"WEREWOLVES," she answered breathlessly. Did that count? Er? OH! Another idea! "And POLLY-JUICE," that potion that made people into other people! "That's a bit of transfiguration on both parts, right? Humans into wolves, humans into other humans, are werewolves a type of cursed transfiguration? Because they are cursed by the full moon......" And did they count as humans still?

Hmm, yeah, she should probably be taking notes.

Cecelia didn't really KNOW too much about transfiguration, but she was a FIRST YEAR, so she figured she got a pass since she'd be soaking up ALL this new information like the blonde sponge that she was. SOOOOAKING. IT. UP.

Opting to just LISTEN and nod super seriously as classmates answered the first question, she wondered what they'd be changing about themselves today, since that SEEMED to be the direction they were going in. Claudine would like to put herself in the group as one of the students who had a fair understanding of what the first question was. There came an even in depth understanding from some of the other responses; others… not so much. The clearest of all came from Barlow and it would have to, right? He was the Professor, after all; here to make learning easy and fun.

“There’s the use of food to change persons into animals like Canary Creams which were invented by Fred and George Weasley,’’ the Snakette offered when Barlow selected her to give her answer.

"Oh, it's Phoebe, sir," Phoebe offered, popping her hand into the air so she was being juuuuust on the right side of politeness. She was sort of delighted to be called the wrong name for some reason, perhaps because it was almost like wearing a super secret disguise. She grinned broadly at the professor and gave him a conspiratorial wink.

No one said the for-real difference between Charms and Transfiguration - Transfig was so so so much harder. At the professor's second question, she was ready and Phoebe's hand shot into the air. "You can change your hair color and length and your nose and your eye color... so you can totally change how you look temporarily. With magic."

Hokey cokey? Don't know her.

Kaiser was pretty much prepared to coast through the rest of this class, at least inasmuch as you could coast through a Transfiguration lesson, and just kind of sit stand back until the question part was over.

Except that something that the human canonball aka plant-licker aka Phoebe James had said had him thinking, so he raised his hand anyway. Not to answer the question, but to ask one in return.

"Can a person change how they look permanently with Transfiguration? Or do the spells always wear off?" Was that something he ought to have already known, as a sixth year? Probably. Well, whatever. He never claimed to be a Transfiguration genius, or even a, uh... not-quite-genius. Barlow was looking at a bonafide D-student, right here.

Love is calling. It's time to let it through. Find a love that will make you. I dare you to try.

Fiona noticed that Professor Barlow did look taken aback. She smirked inwardly and thought of an answer regarding human transfiguration before raising her hand. "I think being a Metamorphmagus is a form of human transfiguration."

”Human transfiguration is extremely difficult and dangerous, sir.” Tavie said thoughtfully, wondering if this was going to relate to what they would learn today. She was only a first year. A smart one, sure. But she didn’t much like entertaining the idea of permanently transfiguring her features into something hideous due to lack of skill.

Metamorphmagus is a form of human transfiguration, but it’s not a learned skill. It’s an ability you’re born with. There’s not many of them. But Tavie knew some! They worked at her mother’s theatre and fascinated her.

*sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO!

Missa didn't fail to notice Eiji didn't even make an attempt to stand with her - or even look at her. She wasn't REALLY the clingy type, nor did she want to be - but it did leave her feeling a little off and wondering if this was how he always felt when she avoided him.

...

No matter. She would just focus on the lesson, and not overthink this. Because maybe - JUST MAYBE he didn't see her at all.

Thankfully though, the professor started speaking and she was able to concentrate.

Trying to add something else to the answers, Missa put her hand up before speaking, "Human transfiguration is different than being a Metamorphmagus - as one needs a wand to perform it, and it is difficult to perform as well because if you do it wrong, you can get stuck in your transfigured state"

Okay....WELL...he had already sort of answered this question with the previous one, referencing switching spells on human and animal body parts, so he was disinclined to respond to this one. His stomach only became more unsettled with this particular branch, the one that could replicate what metamorphagi could do naturally. Thank Merlin Rebecca was always too busy making giddy hearteyes at this professor to speak up in these lectures.

NEWT level coursework though, that's what this was. He was still trying to focus on OWLs, thanks.

And then Missa had to chime in on the series of answers about metamorphagi. Great. Fantastic.

Thankfully Kaiser, Eiji was noticing him more and more in classes these days, asked something that distracted and inspired him enough to respond. "You can get trapped in your transfigured state if you do not perform the casting correctly. It's why this branch of Transfiguration is so dangerous."

Human Transfiguration....

Something that Jillian is interested to learn in but it seems like the hardest thing to do right? Perhaps. She hasn't tried transfiguring into a cat so that she can talk to her pets and enjoy the things they enjoy.

Ohhhhhh, the endless possibilities of being able to transform into a cat and talk to your cat. Jillian smiled at the thought. She has thought about this before but has not really tried it.

Other examples? She has some in mind, one in particular she wants to try. "Transfiguring someone into a some thing." okay, maybe too extreme for a fifth year to do but it is an example "Transfiguring a human into a thing, a tall clock possibly?" And she heard one answered Polyjuice. She wondered if that is considered as a form of 'Transfiguration'. Technically it does change your physical aspects but then again it wears off on its own like most potions do.

Tina was not surprised to hear her answer was correct, but she was caught off guard when the subject turned to human transfiguration. So that's what they were doing today? Her heart sank. She could transfigure an inanimate object or an animal, no problem, but human transfiguration had much higher stakes than she was used to. What if she got stuck in a transformed state? What if she caused irreversible damage to herself or someone else? She wasn't vain about her appearance, but she didn't want to be disfigured either!

Tina willed herself to refocus her thoughts on Barlow's next question. Hopefully the more attention she paid, the fewer mistakes she'd make when it came time to do the actual spell work. So human transfiguration… she knew it was used to alter a person's appearance. She knew about Metamorphmagi and about the dangers associated with human transfiguration (hence her nervousness), but all of those things had been said. What else could she contribute? Aha, she had it! She raised her hand and said, "It's possible to transfigure humans into inanimate objects, but in order to change back, you'd need help from someone else or, if you transfigured yourself, you'd need the intent to keep your mental abilities behind your spell so you can change back yourself."

Identity vs function. A simple way of putting it that he was sure he'd remember for a long time. Or, at least, for any exams Barlow decided to throw at them.

And yes, that was a snort.

Human transfiguration? Lucas felt his stomach drop slightly at those words as he glanced back at the mirror he was standing in front of. It was obvious, yeah, and something he wasn't at all surprised by. Maybe that was a good thing. Maybe it meant that when Barlow did say that they were, uh, changing their hair colour, it wouldn't be so much of a shock.

Which, by the way, he wasn't going to do. Any other hair colour would look terrible on him.

As for the question, Lucas chose not to answer, but went back to fiddling with the loose curl in his hair. He didn't really have anything to add to what everyone had said so...... yeah. Quiet.

Two insightful examples from the young Gryffindor.

Cursed transfiguration, that was certainly a way of putting it.

“Both are types of human transformation, correct.” Not exactly transfiguration, but also kind of transfiguration. But transformation, certainly.

THUMBS UP.

But…… he thought that other small student was Phoebe. Or was that one Fiona?

Phoebe, Fiona. Fiona, Phoebe. It was all getting rather confusing.

But YES, examples. Hair, eyes, facial features.

“Super DUPER hard,” he added to Cecelia’s statement. Tricky to master and potentially catastrophic if not performed correctly. “But you’re spot on, all three of you,” he confirmed with a kind smile. “Muggles will go to great lengths to try and alter these features.”

A human into a tall clock? A very specific example but an example nonetheless. “Good, yes. It’s not just about the changing of appearances or features, human transfiguration can also involve the transfiguring of humans or parts of humans into inanimate objects.” Just as difficult and equally as messy if not done correctly.

His gaze fell upon Lucas who was particularly quiet today. He was used to the Gryffindor being reserved, but he never normally looked this nervous.

Confidence. It was important to have confidence when performing this type of magic. He was going to have to keep a closer eye on this one today.

It wasn’t his intention for the subject matter to turn quite so… well, dark. He’d expected answers about turning ears into eggplants and turning one’s head into a pumpkin. But really, when did anything really ever go as expected?

“All magic has an expiry date,” he said, tone suddenly serious. “It would take a great deal of energy to sustain a spell for that period of time. The greater the period of time, the greater the risk involved and---”

Well, yes. What Missa and Eji both said.

“There have been reported cases of the caster becoming trapped in the transfigured state.” Or worse. But enough about that…

“We’ve only skimmed the surface here, there are many shapes and forms of human transfiguration.” And just to reiterate. “It’s by far, the most complex branch of transfiguration and if performed incorrectly the results can be disastrous.” He gave them all a very serious look before cracking into his usual goofy grin. “But no fear, I won’t be asking you to turn limbs into tentacles today. A safe starting point is hair.”

“We’re going to kick things off with a warm up exercise on our eyebrows. Instantly growing our eyebrows.” Yes, they’d heard right. “It’s a simple spell but not one to be underestimated so eyes on me for a demonstration.” He cleared his throat and with the tip of his fir-wood wand, gently tapped his left eyebrow and then his right eyebrow. “Crinis Excresco!”

Et voilà!

His dark, bushy eyebrows promptly grew to an insane length. Long enough to actually tuck behind his ears, which he did with a “peek-a-boo!” because they were getting in the way of his vision.

“Go on, face your mirrors and give it a whirl. It’s a fun one.” He thought so anyway.

OOC: Well here it is, the mini-activity. You’ve got about 48 hours to crack on with this section and then we’ll move onto the main-activity! Any questions, give me or Barlow a shout.

A-HA! So she was right! Bernadette was just soaking up the rightness of her answers. She was like a real... what was her name again?... a real Hermes Granger today! And now, onto learning transfiguration spells. Of course they couldn't turn limbs into tentacles, she chuckled to herself. That wasn't even possible. Eyebrow hair, though? Bernadette was C L E A R L Y amazed by the professor's eyebrow hair.

"Truly, truly astounding, sir," she complimented him with a small smattering of applause, all the while thinking that he looked a bit like Cousin It. He just needed a bowler hat... was that, uh, something they could transfigure? Or were hats more of a charm thing?

Hmmmm.... she turned her attention back to herself and her mirror self. How long did she want her brows to be? Well the trend was to be on the bushy side these days, but Bernadette had nice, normal eyebrows at the moment. She wasn't sure she wanted to be Cousin It's cousin, but it was an assignment, so she pointed her wand gently to her first eyebrow, over her left eye.

"Crinis Excresco!"

EEEEEEP! HER EYEBROW WAS G R O W I N G! SO FAST! SO HAIRY! SO LONG!

"HELP HELP!" Bernadette shouted as soon as she felt her EYEBROW tickle her CHIN. "Professor, sir! How do I make it STOP growing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
