Default Muggle Studies Lesson 2: #can #we #build #it

It's the time-slot before lunch and you are very hungry.... FoR kNoWlEdGe!!! Hopefully. Because your class is very far from the dining chamber today. Just another wrench thrown into things, but no matter! Your Professor won't let this wrench throw you for a loop. The less-than-ideal grassy surrounding behind the castle is actually the FIFTH best place to host this lesson! Don't fret, your Professor has secured the surrounding area with ample heating charms. Once you enter the boundaries, you'll be warm and snuggly.

Anyway (anyway, anyway).

As you make your way to the clearing you will notice a few (or more dependent upon your attention span) things. First thing. Professor Schmoe (sans Rubik's cube, avec fidget spinner) is standing around letting you know that you can sit or stand around until class begins. Second thing. Boxes. Lots and lots of BIG cardboard boxes, presumably filled with THINGS and STUFF. Third thing. The toolboxes by your Professor's feet. There were lots of them. Fourth thing. Nah, there isn't a fourth thing. Just hang tight.

OOC: whaddup, ya dashing ducks!? welcome to our second MS lesson of the year (ooc), but ic like somethingteenth lesson of the year. please take a look at the classroom rules while you're here. i'll post in about 20ish hours to officially start the lesson.

Class has OFFICIALLY BEGUN. Please post as if you've been here the whole time.

Lesson Progress:
+ QUESTION ONE: How do muggles know how to assemble their furniture? (& arrivals)
+ MINI-ACTIVITY: Unboxing the furniture!
+ QUESTION TWO: What are some strategies you may take into consideration when putting together the furniture?
+ MAIN ACTIVITY: We're building things.

He was really enjoying this. Did that make him a bad person? Because every group seemed to be struggling in one way or another, and honestly it was highly entertaining. Finneas wore a big, dumb smile as a result. It was especially interesting to see HOW they were going about planning. Some groups were meticulously planning, while others seemed to put away the instructions entirely. Interesting. Very interesting.

He gave everyone a big thumbs up as he circled around the area. No one looked like they needed help yet... And no toes had been hammered, that was always a good sign. So y'know. He'd just hang around until someone DID need the help. "There's plenty of time left, but errrrr let's start the building process if you haven't already..." Because some groups were very much taking their time, it seemed.

OOC: Hey!!! Y'all are doing GR8 thank you for all of the participation!!! I'm extending this activity for some time because we can, so why not? lol.
You have at LEAST 24ish hours. Maybe a little more. We'll see where the wind takes us I guess.

For a split second, Kaiser shot Schmoe a blink-and-you'll-miss-it look that quite plainly said 'don't tell me what to do'. Honestly, one minute the guy was all 'planning will be your friend today' and then next he was all 'but why aren't you building yet'.

As it happened, Kaiser was actually done with checking all the smaller pieces were there, so he was going to start building. But it was because he was ready to, not because Schmoe had said so. Just so that was clear.

The very next picture mentioned putting one of the metal key looking things inside a weird plastic sleeve with holes, at the '4' end. Kaiser did this, but was already lost on exactly what the point of this process was. Then, building time. Laying the instructions on the ground and holding them in place with the toe of his boot, so they didn't blow away, he got started.

So first he needed two... bits of wood. Uh. Okay... there were a quite a few bits of wood here, though... so...

He sifted through everything. Nothing was really jumping out at him, so he grabbed a couple of the mid-length pieces of wood, and... wait, no, they needed to have that specific hole pattern on the ends, didn't they? Kaiser continued sifting, and found what he thought might be the right ones. Then he took two of the weird little cylindrical wooden peg things and poked them into the middle holes of the first plank. He pushed them in with his thumbs at first and then, just to make sure they were really in, whacked them the rest of the way with the handle of a screwdriver.

Then he had to... Merlin... push the two planks together so they kind of overlapped? Kaiser supposed the little pegs were meant to keep them together. He looked at his other plank, lined the two up, and realised at once that this was not the piece he needed. More sifting through the pile of materials ensued, and he tried a couple more pieces before finally grabbing the one he needed. He smooshed them together so they overlapped horizontally, found the screws and bendy metal thing that was required next, and screwed the boards together.

There. Easy. First try.

Feeling reasonably confident that he knew what he was doing here, Kaiser looked to the next page and-... wait, three of those? But it had only told him to make one. Where did they other two come from? He flipped back, looking for something he may have missed where it mentioned repeating the last step more than once, but found nothing. And the little picture at the start of the step made it look like only two were involved, which 1. still didn't answer when he was supposed to have made a second one, and 2. didn't explain where the third one was meant to go.

Confused, Kaiser skipped ahead in the instructions, for some kind of clue as to what would become of all these pieces. All he succeeded in doing was confusing himself even more. You know what would make this easier to follow? Words.

Muttering to himself in a sort of German-Italian combo, frustration evident, Kaiser went back to the page with the three overlapping things. He supposed he was supposed to build them now, even though the instructions didn't specifically say that - they just sort of implied they were already there. They'd need to go together in a specific way, and then the wooden peg things would need to go into specific places, if he was reading these instructions right, and it was very possible that he wasn't.

Grumbling loudly, Kaiser began repeating the process of searching through the wooden planks and fitting the ones he needed together.

Why did it need to be this complicated? He supposed he would never know. Did muggles just like making things extra difficult for themselves? As he worked, Kaiser tried thinking back to his own time around muggles, but his experience had been pretty far removed from anything that required building furniture, so he couldn't say for sure.

Default Sorry for the mega post! xD
Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Tina returned Professor Schmoe’s smile with a small, slightly less awkward one of her own. She was pleased, though not at all surprised to know her answer was correct, but she didn’t dwell on it for long. She paid close attention to the next set of instructions. There was no need to tell her not to use magic; she wasn’t dumb enough to try it an risk points loss! As soon as she got the go ahead to start assembly, she consulted her instruction booklet. So she needed two types of screwdriver (one flat head and one Phillips head) and a hammer. She was glad Schmoe said they wouldn’t be using power tools today! Not that she couldn’t have handled it if they were, but power tools sounded like a recipe for disaster, especially in the hands of some of the younger students!

She quickly retrieved the tools she needed from the nearest toolbox and returned to her station. You know one of the advantages of working alone? There was no need to waste time bantering back and forth over who was going to do what job! Tina dived right in to her work. First step: attach the legs to the table top. She laid the table top piece face down in front of her, then picked up a wooden leg from the pile. Now what? She consulted the directions. She needed a metal… thing to attach the two pieces to each other. She opened her bag of smaller pieces and picked out a weird sort of diamond-shaped metal piece with four holes for screws at the corners and one hole in the middle. Using her Phillips head screwdriver, she inserted the matching type of screw into the hole at the top corner of the metal piece and screwed it to one of the corners of the table top; then she placed another screw into the bottom corner of the metal and attached it to the leg. The middle hole required a different, bigger type of screw, so Tina switched to the flat head screwdriver to insert a screw through the middle hole of the metal and into the leg. Seriously?! Whose genius idea was it to use two different types of screws in the same piece?

So if the top corner of the metal piece attached to the table top and the middle and bottom corner attached to the leg, what did the side corners attach to? Had she skipped a step? Tina frantically pored over the instructions. Oh, okay, the side corners attached the drawer box, but that step wasn’t until later. She repeated the process of attaching screws for the other three legs, gently jiggling each one to make sure they were stable. Satisfied with her work thus far, she moved on to the next step: attaching the drawer box. She consulted the instructions again. For this step, she’d need the pieces of the drawer box (duh!) , Phillips head screws and screwdriver, a hammer, some weird-looking short pegs, and two long metal thingies. What were those for? Runners for the drawer, okay then.

Tina carefully hammered the small pegs into pre-drilled holes along the sides of the bottom of the table top. Then she picked up one of the long side pieces, turning it over until she found the side with matching pre-drilled holes. She aligned the holes with the pegs and fitted the piece into place. When that was done, she screwed it to the side corners of two of the diamond-shaped metal pieces she’d used earlier to attach the legs. She did the same thing with the other side piece, then looked at the directions again. The next step was to attach the back of the drawer box; the process was pretty much the same as attaching the sides. Hammer pegs into the holes in the table top, attach the back, and screw it to the diamond-shaped metal plates, only with a shorter piece of wood.

The front part of the drawer box was a little harder. Not only did Tina have to use the weird-looking pegs to attach the front of the drawer box to the table top, but before she could do that, she had to use them to actually build the front piece. Pegs were hammered into the far sides of the two long narrow pieces, and the two short wide ones fit into place, leaving an opening in the middle for the drawer to slide through. When that was done, Tina hammered more pegs into the table top and attached the front, screwing into place through the last two holes in the diamond-shaped metal plates. Was she done with those pegs now? She hoped so; all that hammering was starting to get boring!

She checked the directions and saw she wouldn’t need the pegs again until she built the drawer later. Thank goodness! For now, Tina moved on to the bottom of the drawer box. First step: attach the runners to the inside. She picked up her Phillips head screwdriver and four screws (two for each runner) and secured the runners in place. Now to attach it to the rest of the drawer box, but how? If it didn’t use the pegs or screws, how would it stay in place? Tina examined the pieces closely. Oh, it looked like there were grooves at the bottom of the pieces she’d already attached, and the bottom piece slid right in.

After she slid the bottom piece of the drawer box in place, there was only the drawer and the shelf left to build. But which should she do first? Tina glanced at the instruction booklet, and it said the next step was the drawer. Hmm… that was weird, She would’ve expected to attach the shelf first, but she wasn’t one to deviate from the instructions. The more she thought about it, the more sense it made to build the drawer first. That way, it would be easier to take apart the drawer box if (Merlin forbid!) the drawer didn’t fit. The process of building the drawer was a lot like building the box…. Lot of little pegs to hammer along the side edges of the bottom piece! Tina began the tedious work of hammering and when she finished, she attached the side pieces to the bottom. Now how did the back fit into place? Not more pegs, she hoped! She examined the piece and saw grooves instead of the dreaded pre-drilled holes. She slid the back piece into place; now all that was left was the front, the knob, and the runners.

She hammered a long nail into the center of the front piece and attached the little wooden knob to the pointy end of the nail that stuck out. The front piece, like the back, fit into place with grooves, and when that was attached, Tina gently turned the drawer upside down to attach the runners. She found the other two long metal pieces and screwed them in place on the bottom of the drawer. Now it was time to test the drawer to see if it worked! Tina picked up the drawer and slid it into the drawer box, a task made slightly harder because the table was upside down, but she managed to find the right angle to make it fit. The drawer slid into place, and when she pulled it out, it glided smoothly.

Tina was in the home stretch now. All she had to do was attach the shelf, and she’d be done! She picked up the large flat piece of wood that made up the shelf and looked at the directions for the final time. The shelf was held in place with metal plates similar to the ones that held the legs and drawer box, only these were shaped like an L instead of a funny-looking diamond. At least these plates only needed one type of screw! She removed the final small pieces from her bag, the four metal plates and the large flat head screws to attach them. Okay, so the long part of the L attached to the legs, and the shorter part attached to the shelf… so the plates would bean inverted L shape when attached correctly. This part was probably going to be a lot easier if she attached the plates to the shelf first, then attached the whole thing to the legs, so that’s exactly what Tina did, Holding the flat piece of wood upside down, she screwed the shorter end of a metal plate into one corner of the shelf, then did the same thing with the other three plates. Once she had a metal plate in each corner, she positioned the piece so that the longer sides of the plates lined up with the table legs and screwed them in place.

Now all that was left was to turn the end table right side up. Tina gently lifted the table, taking care not to jostle it too much, and turned it upright. It was heavier than she expected, but nothing she couldn’t handle by herself. She scrutinized her work. It looked exactly like the picture of the end table on the box, but did it work like it? She’d already checked the drawer, but she was going to try it again now that the table was right side up. She pulled the knob, and the drawer glided out. Then she jiggled the shelf - nice and stable. Tina sat back and admired her work. It looked like she was done. Now what?

And look! They were planning.

What pieces did they need first? Hm. Lucas flipped the booklet back to the first page, and started looking through the diagrams. Some were easy enough to understand but the first one? Uh??? "I think it's trying to tell us that we shouldn't be working on our own." Which they were already doing so. "They're also saying to call Ikea if we get confused."

........ yeaaaaah. No.

Shaking his head, he flipped the page and...... uhhh. "I think we need some nails. Eight, from the looks of it. A corner pipe?" What was that?! "A large sheet that has squares cut out in it, four pipes for the nails....... uh?? Another pipe, I guess?" Why not, right? "Two of the strappy...... straps." This was already going badly. "And then two of the side boards. They have a cross through them and fabric on it." Did she get all of that?

Uuuuuuum...

Cecelia started handing materials over to Lucas as he named items, just sort of guessing at certain times. Like the corner pipe, for instance? THAT she wasn't sure about, but there was a piece that LOOKED a bit like it would go IN a corner, and so that HAD to be it. Right? Uh. SURE. And um..well, he had said five pipes in total ASIDE from the corner pipe, so she handed those, over to. "This must be the sheet, right?" She held up the item, raising her eyebrows. Yeah, that HAD to be it. As for the strappy bits, those were easy to find, they WERE. Oh, and the BOARDS, yeah, those were accounted for. "Think they might've given us some extra nails. Think it's 'cause people tend to lose 'em?" She guessed so.

Moving over to look at the booklet, Cecelia decided that SHE could delegate for a while now that she'd done some organizing. Lucas was probably SUPER good at this building thing, anyway. She could just sort of SENSE that about him. Mhm, she could!

"Okay! THAT bit goes THERE and attaches to THAT and THAT, actually. Oh and if you add THAT, then it really DOES start to look like a chair!" She was pointing and bossing and elaborating with her hands excitedly, all sorts of eager to just finish the chair. "But then we need to make sure we slide on the sheet thingy BEFORE tightening it all up!" She was SURE of it.

Ugh, Eiji was being SUCH a man right now about all of this. Nettie shot Phoebe a LOOK that clearly said 'hang on to those instructions' just to be on the safe side - after all, a desk couldn't be THAT hard to put a desk together right?

Ah, yes, the corner. Nettie could do that. "Ok, I'll screw it together," she said with a smile, grabbing a screwdriver from their pile of tools and a few of the screws that fit in to the pre-made holes, positioning them and beginning to assemble the bits as Eiji held it. "Phoebe, maybe you can try and figure out what other pieces go together?" she suggested. It would give her something to do while they worked on this, and also help move the whole project along.

Lucas blinked. Why was she handing items to him? Weren’t they supposed to build this together? Was she........ was she expecting him to build all of it?! No. No no no! Did she not see his lanky arms? They had NO muscles in them! Zero! But he didn’t have the heart to tell her that so he accepted the items and....... put them to one side. He was being PRODUCTIVE. This was like pass the parcel. With metal.

"Yeah, that’s the sheet for sitting. It even has the square holes in there." That, in itself, was a good find. As for the nails, the fourth year held up the small box of nails and examined them. "You know, I bet you’re right. Bet they’re sick of people calling in just for nails." He would be. Maybe it was a good thing he didn’t work for-

........

...............

Uhh. She was talking FAST, wasn’t she?

Oh Merlin.

"Woah woah woah! Eaaaaaasy there!" So they were starting with the pipes, right? Who was he kidding, as much as he didn’t want to, HE was starting with the pipes. It looked like the first year really was relying on his, uh, ~ muscles ~ for this. Bad idea, Cece.

First? The pipes. The chair had to have four so he laid out four for him to reach easily. Next came the weird........ uh, whatever it was. It had a bit of fabric on it and looked like the side board so he grabbed that. Holding it in place, he took out a nail and tried to twist it around and around and arouuuuund, trying to attach the side piece to one of the pipes. There was a small space left because of his fingers but.......

........ he shrugged and moved on.

"Is this what it’s supposed to be like, Cece?" he asked, grabbing another nail for another one of the pipes.

It took him... far longer than he would have liked to admit, but Kaiser eventually had the three overlapping-double-planks situation thing sorted out. He had by now decided that this was absolutely not a skill of his. Or even remotely fun. Actually, he was about ready to put his foot through some of these planks.

Kaiser just... really hoped nobody tried to talk to him any time soon. He could practically feel his blood simmering and knew he was liable to snap at the next person who so much as looked in his direction. IKEA was evil, okay? Evil.

With the planks sorted and the pegs stuck into the ends in what he hoped were the right places - his fingers were aching in protest from having to try and pull out no less than three pegs he had mistakenly hammered into the wrong holes - Kaiser finally moved onto the next page. More planks. More pegs. Then screwing more planks onto those planks. Ugh, fine. Fiiiiine.

The instructions made this step look more complicated than it was, and it wasn't long before all those pieces were fixed together in what Kaiser hoped was the correct way. Although, ultimately, what did it really matter? He had no plans to sleep on this bed, so if it was put together wrong, it wasn't like it affected him.

Step seven basically meant attaching all the planks he had already put together to each other now, using the big long screws. There was a lot of fiddling and lining up and twisting involved, and this was around the time that it became clear that having a second person to hold things in place while he put the screws in would have been invaluable. But he was committed now, so Kaiser just... took a little bit longer to do it.

Okay... a lot longer.

Because he kept dropping the planks with his fumbling, tired fingers, and things kept shifting out of place before he could put them together. And then he realised that he'd somehow started assembling it backwards, at which point Kaiser deliberately dropped the entire complication of wooden planks and screws back on the ground with a loud crash. It wasn't worth it. It really wasn't.

Finneas had blinked and missed Kaiser's look. Very unfortunate. Or very fortunate, depending upon how much you liked being glared at by children. Either way, things seemed to be going just as well as he thought they would. Furniture assembly was not an easy task. That was the main takeaway here. Tina's table looked to be coming together nicely. And Cecelia and Lucas were having some great deliberations, which was equally as welcome. Trinetta's delegation of tasks was smart. But Kaiser.... He was worried about that one.....

Finneas was just about to stumble over when he decided to first check his watch. Ho ho ho. Uh oh. Where did the time GO? "Class, we have about five or so minutes left. Try to find a stopping point... And we will finish up our work in the next lesson."

Because..... Half done furniture was good for no one. Sometimes things do not go over as well as you'd hope. Y'know? He hadn't wanted to dedicate TWO entire lessons to assembly. But. Hey! At least they were all LOVING it, right!?

"I will errrrr, see you all at lunch!" This was their dismissal. Yes.

OOC: henlo! Thank you so so so much for attending!! I hope u had some fun. I'll leave the thread open for 5 more hours in case you'd like to wrap up or post exits!

Cecelia giggled because really, her mum and dad acted like that sometimes when she got excited and talked WAY faster than their brains could understand. She did her best to slow down, trying to keep pace with what Lucas was doing and offer helpful pointers when she could. The GOOD stuff like 'twist that a LITTLE tighter' and 'bet it'd be easier if you got onto your belly to tighten it.' She was a REALLY good helper, wasn't she?! Supportive, too. Like when Lucas asked her if that was how the chair was SUPPOSED to look, the small blonde nodded eagerly EVEN though it didn't look EXACTLY like it was supposed to. "Bet it'll be SUPER comfy to sit in when it's all done." There was only like a SIXTY percent chance it'd fall apart, too! They'd done WELL!

Hearing the professor say it was time to wrap things up, Cecelia grabbed the other nails to try and quickly help secure the pieces they already had all situated, that way they wouldn't have TOO much to finish up the next time. She twisted and twisted and twisted until they were in place, trying to work WITH Lucas so they could both be successful. "You know, I think that's good for now!" And she was hungry, did he know?

SPOILER!!: Avalon! <3

But for someone like Avalon, that wasn't the easiest way to think about things. At least Claudine seemed to know a little bit of what she was doing -- and she wasn't afraid of the tool.

"Good job with the top!" Avalon said, admiring the way that the tabletop was coming together. "I'll get started on the legs." She took a long piece of wood that matched the picture in the booklet. She picked up that weird screwdriver thing and worked on twisting the screw into the piece. Righty-tighty lefty-loosy, right? Peering at her handiwork, she noticed that while the screw was in place, the table leg was completely crooked. No, that just would not do. The young Ravenclaw took the screw out and started again, being sure to hold the table leg steady this time.

Completing this project was easier with a group than if she had been working alone. Claudine was not going to admit that out loud. She simply smiled a bit at Avalon and finished off the top. It took a lot of instruction checking and once, she even banged her index finger with the hammer. The result? Claudine was put in a bad mood for the remainder of the lesson where she lapsed into even more silence than usual.

The Snakette watched Avalon and Fiona work for the moment as she nursed her thumb. Then it was time to wrap up. “I think we’ve just about done for now. Nice work, ladies.’’ With the exception of her throbbing thumb, it had been a surprisingly smooth lesson. Claudine gathered her belongings. Schmoe didn’t specify if they should pack up the furniture things but she helped returned the screws, tools and whatever else she could find to the box.

Once done, she silently made an exit.
