Default Potions Lesson 1

It had turned snowy outside, and the walk along the potions corridor to the first class after Christmas was a little nippy. Inside the classroom it was a tad warmer, Noble having already lit his burner at the front of the class to try and take the chilly edge off the room. Thankfully today's class was a practical one, as evidenced by the trays of ingredients on the side bench, and the room would soon warm up once they started the brewing proper.

Noble lent against the front of his desk, sipping a strong, dark coffee from the new travel mug his daughter had gifted him for Christmas. His gaze moved to the door and the students entering. "Hurry up and come in...let's try keep some of the heat in the room, shall we?" Any other day he would have them turn on their burners early whilst they were covering the theory, but that hardly seemed a wise idea with the initial experiment they'd be performing today.

Lesson progression:
Greetings and first question
Replies and second question
Replies and trying to brew with impaired sight
Moving on to brewing the Oculus potion
Brewing step 2
Brewing step 3

*sappysapper* MAJNOO, YO!

The moment Eiji entered the classroom, she was very very much aware of his presence - and she was very conflicted on where he wanted him to sit. So far, he had always been the one helping her in Potions - and if because of their stupid conflict he chose to sit somewhere else - there would be disaster at her table, she just knew it.

Maybe that disaster was better than awkward confrontation though.

And then ... Eiji was sitting besides her, a certain kind of relief passed through her but she tried not to show it. Instead, she had managed to pull out a packet of gum under the table and she was fiddling with it when the professor started speaking.

Only she couldn't really concentrate on it wither, because Eiji was passing her a note? Reading it, Missa couldn't help but bite her lower lip - a thing necessary to avoid smiling because this was cute - even if things were PLENTY complicated still.

Pretending to listen to the professor, and what other kids had to say - she wrote a reply at the back of the note before .... sneakily passing it back to Eiji, also with a gum. Because why not.

Quote:
I am glad you are sitting with me.

Gunnar didn't have a far walk from the common room to the potions classroom, but he still felt the chill in the corridor on his short journey to class. He wasn't sure why he noticed it so acutely today while it had been winter for some time, perhaps it was more noticeable after being home for break, but he was glad to be in the relative warmth of the classroom.

And he had just gotten his things set up when Noble started class. Ailments of the eye? Gunnar paused, then raised his hand. "Nearsightedness and farsightedness would be considered ailments, would they not?" Technically, he supposed, as he knew some people to need glasses, even if they were not necessarily diseases.

Kamryn gave Professor Noble a small smile as he spoke, she hadn’t meant to be late, potions was one of her favorite classes! She settled into her desk and stayed quiet until Professor Noble asked a question about eye.. ailments?

She had an answer but someone else said it before she could respond, she bit her lip as she thought about it more before slowly raising her hand..

“There are cataracts sir.. I think that’s lenses that are clouded.. I’ve heard some people can be born with them.. but they are most common in the elderly. ” Her voice was quiet as she tucked some hair behind her ear.

Taddy would guess today's lesson had something to do with eyes. Some sort of eye potion. He wondered how such thing could be used. Would a potion to cure some eye condition be dropped into the eyes themselves or taken orally? He considered that along with the question regarding all the ailments that are related to the eye.

"Eyes are very sensitive in general." Taddy started when he was allowed to answer, "It's easy to catch pink eye from someone else, it's an infection that makes your eyes appear pink and contagious to others if you got it from a virus or bacteria." Sure, it was known as a minor thing, "It can be serious, especially if it causes enough pain and your affecting vision." That was good enough then.

If Noble's cough had brought Kaiser back to Planet Hogwarts, there was no outward sign of it at first. He continued to gaze off vaguely into the middle distance as he waited for class to start, though when it did, he did let his eyes flick towards the professor. Which was something, at least.

But his level of engagement pretty much stopped there. Ailments of the eye? Kaiser didn't know any, and almost every answer his classmates put forward were completely unknown to him. He did briefly wonder whether a simple injury to the eye counted as an ailment, but ultimately kept his thoughts to himself.

Keeping his silence, Kaiser let his mind drift slightly, and stared instead at Professor Noble's lit burner at the front of the room, head propped up on one hand.

Lucas was still thinking about how much he wanted to light his burner and try to feel as warm as possible in the class when the sound of the door closing caught him off guard. Jumping, slightly, he blinked away from the burner and looked up at Noble when he started talking about......

........ eyes? Were they treating eyes?

Needless to say, he was confused. But if there was one thing he did know, it was that he did NOT want to be handling any eyes today. No, thank you. Keep those as far away as possible. But he could answer the question, right? Something about ailments of the eyes which, now that he thought about it, there were a lot more that were being mentioned than he knew about.

"There's colour blindness?" he started, his hand up in the air, "Some people can't see certain colours." Did he have to explain any more? Because he really didn't know any more than that.

There were many things Nina Castillo enjoyed. Potions, was one of them. There were also plenty of things Nina pretended to loathe. Potions, was one of those things, too. And as far as Professor Noble knew, she was horrible at potions. Exactly the way she liked it. While she faked a lack of enthusiasm for the subject, her boredom at the current moment was not fake. In fact, it was very much real.

Aliments of the eyes?

Instead of choosing the answer, the Slytherin simply watched their Professor. Her face conveyed a look of mild disinterest as she absentmindedly played with her hair, for effect. The question was not at all stimulating. Though he surely asked in order to provoke participation. It was an open-ended question that called for many possibilities. Anything from simple eye strain to amblyopia, could be classified as an aliment of the eye. Her classmates, however, provided rather lackluster answers. As always.

Patrick’s head was swiveling round and round as people answered with ailments of the eyes. He sat for a moment pondering just what they would be doing... he hadn’t heard his grandparents speak of any poitions for the eyes. Surely they would have since two of their grandchildren had glasses. Shaking that out of his mind he raised his hand, ready to contribute to the lessons, “Astigmatisms are common eye issues.”

Although, he supposed that those with it had no idea what it did to their vision. It was like some of his friends as a kid who had no idea anything was wrong with their eyes because they thought trees had no individual leaves, just a blob of them. He had seen many of his friends experience that. He was thankful that he was not one of them.

Eye see what you did there Professor Noble. Not that it helped Eloise at all since she didn't really know any ailments of the eye except for blindness but well yeah she was listening and circe some of these answers were over her head.

So she did the smart thing and start writing some of these down

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Tina was still looking at the ingredients at her station, trying to guess what they would be used for, when the lesson began. At the sound of Noble's clapping, she focused her attention on him, listening intently and ready to take notes. She almost smiled to herself at the welcome back. Well, that was one way to describe it. She was ready to hit the ground running… running to the end of the term and straight back to France.

Tina was glad that Noble got straight to the point early on, no annoying guessing games, no vague opinion-oriented questions, just straightforward certain facts. Okay, so eye ailments… were they going to be brewing an eye healing potion? That would be useful! Tina considered the question for a few moments. The first thing she thought of was conjunctivitis, but that had already been said. That was no good. She'd have to think of something else.

There was only one other answer that came to mind. Tina's hand went up, and after being called on. she said, "Detached retina, sir. It's exactly what the name implies: a condition where the retina detaches from the underlying layers of the eye. It's most common in people who are elderly, have had previous eye disease or surgery, or have suffered an injury to they eye. If left untreated, it can cause permanent vision loss."

As she finished speaking, her expression changed, and she suddenly got very quiet. This wasn't a subject she liked to think about.

Sarah thinks I'm cute | Shan's safe space.

Józef was sat in his seat next to Lucas and was absentmindedly staring around the classroom when the other boy answered. Colour blindness - huh. He'd never really thought about that, but he wondered what it would be like. What did it mean? Were colours different? Did they just see in BLACK AND WHITE?!

WHATTTTTT.

But, in a strange turn of events, Jó did have an answer! So he shot his hand up in the air. "Junctivitis, sir," he said proudly, not realising that he hadn't quite got the name right. "The one where your eyes go all gunky and gross."

Somewhat like this particular question. Which naturally elicited several different options in the fourth year's mind. The most obvious being blindness and the general degeneration of of the function of the eye due to old age. But his hand remained down and instead set to getting his parchment prepared for the lesson with the date and other necessary details.

Once that was done...he couldn't help himself and took a bit of spare parchment and did the most teenager thing possible in the moment: he wrote a note and passed it sideways to Missa.

[INDENT][INDENT][INDENT][INDENT][INDENT]

With hands quickly shooting up at his question, the two Slytherins were lucky that Noble was adequately distracted and hadn’t yet noticed their note passing. Or the food item which was definitely not an allowable item in the potions classroom.

Should he though..well, he wouldn’t look on them kindly.
SPOILER!!: Daisy and Eniola

Eniola raised her hand and when called upon answered, ”Macular degeneration, sir. It causes you to loose the sharpness in your eyesight, is often age-related and can lead to eventual blindness. It’s quite unfortunate.”

She was curious to see what potion they’d be looking at today and if it’s be one she’d need to know for her NEWTs. Regardless she had her pen and notebook at the ready to take detailed notes. No sense in falling behind.

Noble was unsurprised that two of the first hands up belonged to the Hufflepuffs, given that he knew both of them had aspirations of becoming Healers. “Indeed, Daisy. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the elderly, and one of the main reasons to have regular eye appointments even if you don’t wear glasses…if caught early, the effect can be slowed down or prevented, but it’s irreversible if not diagnosed until too late.” He looked at the younger Hufflepuff now, who had also provided a decent answer. “Correct, Eniola. Macular degeneration is causes blurry vision due to part of the retina in your eye thinning.”

“They would,” Noble replied simply to the Slytherin. There was a reason he’d not specified diseases of the eye. “Near- or short-sightedness is also known as myopia, and is when you can see things that are near to you clearly, but objects in the distance are blurry. Farsightedness, or hyperopia is the opposite. Both can be corrected with glasses or surgery.”

Interesting that ailments of the elderly were so popular. “You’d be correct, Kamryn. Cataracts are clouded lenses. Vision becomes as if looking through fog, and to an onlooker, the pupil in the affected eye looks white.”

Noble sipped his coffee as he waited for Thadius to get to the relevant bit of his answer. Because yes, eyes were sensitive…but that hadn’t been his question. “Actually, pink eye doesn’t have to be caused by an infection, rather…it’s a symptom of something causing a reaction in the eye to make it redder from the inflamed blood vessels in your eyeball. It can also be caused by allergies or foreign material in the eye such as dust or dirt.”

Noble didn’t mind quiet students, so long as they were concentrating. Which seemed debatable with Nina, to be honest, so he’d be keeping a close eye on her. By the looks of things, Kaiser might need such encouragement to keep up too, but Noble was relieved to see Eloise starting to write some notes.

Luckily for Lucas, no eyes would be handled in today’s class. Not even beetle eyes. “There is, Lucas,” he said with a nod. “Rather than literal blindness, it’s a deficiency in how some people see colour…where certain colours are harder to distinguish. It’s also much more common in men.” The reasons why were interesting, and he’d happily explain, but it was a little out of scope for today’s class.

It was a shame Patrick didn’t care to elaborate himself, really. Noble frowned slightly, before continuing. “They are. Astigmatism affects the curvature of you eye, and how the light focuses on the retina. It can render images almost like fun house mirrors.” Hopefully they knew what those were.

It's most common in people who are elderly, have had previous eye disease or surgery, or have suffered an injury to they eye. If left untreated, it can cause permanent vision loss."

As she finished speaking, her expression changed, and she suddenly got very quiet. This wasn't a subject she liked to think about.

“Correct, Tina.” Noble paused to sip his coffee before continuing. “A detached retina is a serious problem, but if caught in time can be healed via a number of different methods.”

WHATTTTTT.

But, in a strange turn of events, Jó did have an answer! So he shot his hand up in the air. "Junctivitis, sir," he said proudly, not realising that he hadn't quite got the name right. "The one where your eyes go all gunky and gross."

Noble did a double take as Józef’s arm shot into the air, and it took a moment or two to process what the youngest Kowalski had said. “I think you mean conjunctivitis, Józef. Also known as pink eye.” He glanced to Thadius. “The eyes produce a discharge to help clean them…the dry crusty stuff you often find on your eyes when you wake up in the morning. When infected or flushing out debris, more of this ‘gunk’ can build up.” Hopefully that made sense.

And with no other forthcoming answers, it was probably time to move on. They’d covered a wide range of eye ailments, and hopefully everyone had managed to note at least some of them down. However, he wanted to narrow the focus for the rest of the lesson as the moved towards the practical. “We’ve covered lots of human ailments so far…so my next question is this: what creatures do you think might have problems with eye irritation and why?”

Ew.

Feigning disinterest in lessons was typically quite the task for Nina Castillo, but it was far easier when the subject matter included something as gross as eye ailments. A subject, which, on it's own was not actually disgusting. But the answers her classmates gave were far too unsettling. Conjunctivitis. Ew. Nina frowned at the mention of eye-discharge. She would far rather work on a potion set for mood changing or something. This was disgusting.

What was even worse was the next question. Creatures. Why did they have to bring creatures up in every lesson under the sun???? Creatures were meant for Care of Magical Creatures lessons and Care of Magical Creatures lessons ONLY. Couldn't they just keep them in the barn where they belonged? Nina didn't want to learn how to brew a potion for the aliment of eyes with CREATURES involved because she did not plan on going near any creature at all. Ever. Never mind if it had an eye ailment. They were all the same. No thank you.

She wouldn't even have to pretend this lesson. She actually hated this one.

Creatures....having...eye irritation?

Were they going to be brewing eye medication for animals? That was an interesting direction for this lesson to go...but it was kind of intriguing.

She raised her hand after a bit of thought. "Well, acromantulas have lots of eyes. So their chances of having eye irritation or conjunctivitis is multiplied...significantly," she pointed out. Did bugs get eye infections? How did you treat a bug if it was sick?

Nettie's opinion was that you just stomped on it, and boom. Problem solved. That was probably not the correct answer though...

Avalon usually didn't mind Potions class, but today seemed exponentially more boring than her previous lessons. They were talking about eye diseases, specifically ones that were known to affect Muggles. She had never heard of any witches or wizards getting any of the ailments that were mentioned, besides nearsightedness/farsightedness. Her father did have glasses, after all. Nevertheless, she jotted down a few of the examples on her parchment, just in case she needed to reference them later. Not having anything unique to add to the conversation, she decided to keep quiet.

But then Professor Noble shifted the conversation toward magical creatures, and class suddenly got a tiny bit more interesting-- even though Avalon couldn't really think of any creatures that experienced particular eye ailments. She thought of one of her favorite creatures, the Phoenix, and remembered that its healing powers came from its eyes. Perhaps an ailment could prevent that? She raised her hand, slightly unsure of her answer, but still wanting to contribute to the lesson in some way. "I don't know if there are any particular ailments that affect them, but phoenixes might have issues with eye irritation. If the bird had some sort of eye disease, would its tears no longer have healing powers?" Her response had turned into a question, but she didn't want to sound too confident in her answer in case she was wrong.

Honestly, Archer had stayed quiet because the one eye ailment that came to mind was one that had been said already. Twice. And repeating answers could get rather boring pretty fast. So could the whole 'all creatures everything' aesthetic. She was truly hoping that this wasn't going to be a trend for the whole day, because while she didn't particularly hate creatures, several classes of dealing with them was too much. Unless they were big cats like the zorwu.

"Dragons, thanks to all that smoke from breathing fire." She knew smoke irritated human eyes anyway, so why not dragons. Unless they had built up a tolerance for it, thanks to being around them all the time....?

What were the zorwu? Don't they cover that in magical creatures? Dragons were a favourite of Sterling's. But what was a zorwu? Could someone explain that to her?

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

This question was stumping Daisy and it took her a little while for an answer to appear in her mind. She slowly raised her hand and said with a touch of uncertainty in her voice, "Kneazles could get issues with their eyes because of the third eyelid I think they possess as some feline breeds do."

Creatures that could have eye problems? Cassidy frowned slightly when someone already said Acromantula because that was the first thing that she could think of. They had tons of them. There had to be other animals that had eye ailments as well though. But what... She bit her lip, as usual when she was thinking over a question. She raised her hand when she finally thought of something. "Maybe centaurs since they have eyes very similar to ours." It made sense to her since their top half was pretty much human.

Patrick nodded, "Yes, I knew it made the lights change but was unsure of what it actually did for the eyes. Thank you professor." That made way more sense knowing what actually happened to the eye when you had an astigmatism. He could only imagine what lights looking different did to his friends who had astigmatisms.

Patrick was writing the answers quickly, "Wouldn't most creatures? They're often exposed to the elements and have few people looking after them in the same way people look after their pets." And the more he said that the more he figured that he was going down the wrong path and would be getting to do extra homework.

Writing down specific ailments of the eyes as the professor confirmed or elaborated each one, Gunnar looked up from the notes as Noble continued, posing another question to the class. Oh awesome, were they going to be brewing something specifically for creatures? He'd find this useful for his own independent studies.

And while he found some of the answers given by his classmates to be fairly insightful with their reasoning, he didn't think he needed to be quite so specific. Raising his hand, he added, "Any creature that has eyes has the potential for some sort of ailment to befall them." That was just nature, wasn't it? Maybe some were more likely than others, but simply the fact that they existed opened the possibility. And probably an unhelpful addition, but it was true.

Tina simply nodded at Noble's response to her answer. She wasn't surprised or particularly proud of herself when she learned it was correct. She personally knew someone who'd had that very eye ailment, so she knew it would be. She'd copied down the answers that had been mentioned before hers and continued to do so for the answers that came after hers, looking up only when Noble addressed the class again.

Well, that question took the lesson in an unexpected direction! Okay, so creatures…wait, did that mean magical creatures only or could they name any creature with a tendency toward eye ailments? Tina's first thoughts turned to brachycephalic breeds of dogs and cats that were prone to eye diseases, but she didn't want to risk being wrong on the grounds of naming a non magical creature, especially when everybody else was sticking to magical creatures. She decided to play it safe and come up with something else. She thought of dragons. Their eyes were their weakest point, so it stood to reason that they'd be more prone to eye irritation… but the Hufflepuff prefect had already mentioned them, and Tina Dantes did not piggyback off other people's answers, *especially not Archer Calrissian's!

Then it came to her. Sphinxes! Tina's hand went up, and she said, "What about sphinxes? They're native to Egypt, which has a predominantly sandy desert climate, and sand is a known eye irritant… so wouldn't that make them more susceptible to eye irritation?" She wasn't 100% confident in that answer, so she worded it in the form of a question. That way if it was too much of a stretch, she wasn't technically wrong I'm front of everyone.

Yeeeeeeaaaaah

Eloise didn't know any animals that got eye things or irritation. Her cat never did and that is were her knowledge ended. Maybe she should find Oreo once this is all over and give her a treat.

Maybe snakes did and Mr. boring over there according to Cel just went with the most smart...well you know answer imaginable and Eloise liked it. Eh guess it was back to note taking for her.

Wonder where Noble was going with this.

He wasn't too sure how his note would be received, but if nothing else the Ravenclaw was obligated to sit by him for the entirety of the lesson. Plenty of time to accomplish...something. Though, much to his relief, he seemed like the mountain he had to climb wasn't the Everest he had anticipated. So his eyes softened and he looked at her rather than pick up his quill again to write something else, mouthing 'I miss you' and knowing she would be able to read his lips easily.

The gum, however, was simply pocketed for later. Had it been mint flavored? He would take that as a promising sign.

As for the next question...Eiji found himself begrudgingly agreeing with Dooley and that soured his mood a bit. Though it was obvious that Professor Noble was looking for a specific answer, or so the Slytherin assumed at least. His thought process was to consider creatures that particularly relied on their eyes, such as bird of prey and owls and goats.

Ben had remained quiet so far in the lesson, which wasn't unusual for him. Potions was an interesting class, but he did not have much to say about the questions posed thus far. Eye conditions was not something he was particularly knowledgeable in, whether human or animal-related, and it wasn't necessarily something he would have chosen to learn about on his own. It was clearly relevant to this lesson, though, so learn he would. He continued to quietly take notes on his fellow students' answers and Professor Noble's responses.
