Potions Laboratory

Down the end of the potions corridor, past the main classroom and linked to the storeroom, is the potions laboratory. A smaller version of their usual classroom, it’s set up very similarly - lines of benches facing the front, with access to a burner for a cauldron for every pair of chairs. Lining the side walls is storage. In the bottom cupboards you’ll find all the basic equipment, neatly laid out in trays. And on the shelves above can be found the standard potions ingredients. However, if you need anything more specialised, you’ll have to talk to Professor Noble about accessing the storeroom. If you try the door without permission, you’ll find it securely and safely locked; it might even set off a spark or two in warning. At the back of the classroom are a row of sinks and plenty of draining racks. If you use classroom equipment, you’re expected to clean and tidy up after yourselves.

At the front of the room is a sign in book, logbook and list of rules. Before touching anything, please sign in and check the logbook for updates. Professor Noble will regularly be checking, and doesn’t take kindly to unauthorised brewing. There are also several potions books for reference and inspiration.

Rules
  • Sign in with your name, year, house and potion being brewed.
  • If you need to leave your station for any reason, leave a note on your desk saying where in the recipe you’ve got up to, and how long you’ll be away. Any unattended potions without this information will be immediately banished.
  • Put equipment and ingredients back after use. If you’ve broken something or an ingredient is nearly gone, please make a note in the logbook so I’m aware and can get it replaced.
  • If you make a mess, clean it up. I will know, and extra-curricular brewing privileges will be removed for repeat offenders.
  • The lab will be open from breakfast and locked an hour before curfew. If you’ll need access outside of this, you will need my prior permission before you start brewing. Please bring me a timetable showing why the potion cannot be completed in normal hours.
  • Any questions or problems, please come and find me. I’m most likely to be found teaching in the classroom, or in my office.

Out of all the people he tutored, Nina may be the most insufferable. And it was not because of a lack of ability nor because she was particularly a klutz. He was more than happy to pair with her in Potions lessons if it came down to it, unlike Néve who had wasted more ingredients that it was worth whenever he happened to be sitting beside her. On those days...he resorted to using those ingredients from the shelves rather than from his own personal stash. No, Nina seemed insistent on trying to apply her 'feminine airs' in a manner than absurdly seemed to work with most of the male populace...for whatever reason.

Must be because she was new.

But today he was meeting Nina for another round of the usual, though he was hoping to expose a thing or to. If his pride would let him, that is. Which was still very much up for debate as he set the cauldron out for their use. He would just be supervising the brewing rather than performing any of it himself.

Hopping up on the stool, Eiji flipped through his Potions book and considered their options. He did not want to select something willy nilly, but rather if correctly brewed...something that they both could benefit from.

The hinges of the door to the potions laboratory creaked, and Professor Noble soon appeared behind multiple levitated trays of potions ingredients from his last class. His concentration focused on the trays, he didn't register the Slytherin's presence until he'd dropped the standard ingredients off on the shelves at the side of the room, and was headed to put away the rest in the store room. Dark robes flowed behind him as he strode across the stone floor.

"What's on the agenda today, Eiji?" he inquired as he unlocked the door. A brew for himself, or was he waiting on someone to join him?

Eiji Rasting was difficult, to say the least. Aside from all of his usual antics, there was also the added layer that he didn't seem to buy in the same way all of the other boys did. It made for quite exhausting tutoring sessions for Nina, as she had to constantly come up with new strategies. Why she kept at it despite knowing this about him? Because if she could convince Eiji, then no one else would be an issue. That and she was bloody stubborn. And so, the fourth year made her way to the potions laboratory, pushing the door and greeted him with a sweet smile.

"Maybe we could skip today and do yoga outside instead," she suggested, her eyes persuasive. She didn't really want to skip, nor did she think for even a moment that Eiji would agree to that proposal. She only--

Immediately, her back straightened, having noticed the presence of their Professor. "Good evening, Professor Noble." She greeted the man with a respectful, closed-mouth smile before walking over to the work station that Eiji had set his cauldron on. The level of formality in the room had escalated rather quickly.

Um. .... So .... What were they making today?

She stood on her tip-toes, peering into the cauldron to see if he had already begun. But he hadn't, which was quite nice of him.

Nothing in particular was sticking out to him as he continued to flip through the pages, perhaps because he knew that anything they brewed would end up being a mild disaster and so he did not particularly want to select anything that would get his hopes up. Whatever train of thought he had had, which was not much, was interrupted by the arrival of Professor Noble. "Not sure, professor," he replied with a small shrug and a sigh. "Trying to sort that out presently. Something both Nina and myself can benefit from."

And now his thoughts were slightly distracted with wanting to discuss the possibility of starting alchemy training at Hogwarts sooner than sixth year...

But with another flip of the page and a cursory glance upwards...Eiji found that Nina had finally arrived.

"...no thanks," he offered dryly to the, surely, rhetorical questioning about yoga. He was sure his little sister would indulge her at another time. "Been debating a brew to help the mind focus"

And no, of course he had not started anything because that was her job.

"Did you want to do something new, or something to build upon?" Noble returned vials to the shelves as he spoke, slightly surprised that the Slytherin was teaming up with Nina for his extra-curricular brewing. It seemed a mis-matched team, quite frankly, and he could only but assume (and hope, even) that Eiji had offered his services as a tutor to get her up to scratch. So far, the girl had yet to impress him in class.

The mention of yoga as she entered did nothing for her in Noble's mind either, and he wrinkled his nose in distaste. Professor Myers had previously tried his best to coerce the Potions professor into the activity, and utterly failed. Noble had no interest in contorting his body into strange shapes, and definitely thought of it as a poor substitute for an evening's potions brewing. Perhaps it was no wonder Nina didn't excel in his classes.

"Good evening, Nina," he responded, before looking back to Eiji. "In that case, the obvious choice would be a wit-sharperning potion - of which there are at least three variants in your potions textbook that you could compare." Same ingredients, for the most part...just different preparations and potency. "Otherwise, might I suggest the Dresden Draught? It's not on the current curriculum, but helps the drinker with concentration and alertness. It has a few less than traditional ingredients too."

Let the record show that Nina was actually an EXCELLENT student. She excelled at most everything. Despite the illusion she attempted to uphold, she thoroughly enjoyed studying. It was why all of her Witch Weekly Magazines had copies of her notes hidden within them. Potions was one of her best subjects following History, Defense, Runes, and Arithmancy. But she had very quickly learned to adapt her classroom mannerisms so that they matched the image she was trying to portray. Because both Professor Beryl and Professor Sandhu had called her in after lessons. Her crime? Receiving excellent marks on every assignment, while remaining absolutely silent in the classroom.

And so, Nina learned.

The best way to keep a Professor off your back was to play the part you wanted them to believe. While pretending to butcher her classroom assignments hurt a part of her very being (and went against everything she knew), it did a convincing enough job to steer the majority of her classmates away from skepticism. But she did know what she was doing. She only pretended as if she didn’t.

And while Eiji Rasting was not easily convinced, she was certain that Professor Noble was. His look said everything that he didn’t say out loud. And speaking of looks, Nina gave both their Professor and Eiji an unimpressed one at the mention of a potion for focus. Nina’s mind rarely wandered where it shouldn’t and the very idea of taking a potion without a need was utterly revolting. Surely the potion would have a negative effect if taken without a proper need. Perhaps it would lead to some sort of bodily desensitization?

We should make an elixir to induce euphoria,” because none of their suggestions sounded at all stimulating.

sweetpinkpixie 05-22-2019 12:16 AM

The Potions Master's question was an enticing one, benefits to either option. That is...if he were doing a brew on his own. As it were, Eiji spent more time considering which would be the lesser of two evils considering whatever ingredients were used would be wasted due to Nina's insufferable antics. "....I think just something standard for now, professor," he replied wearily. Perhaps his tone and brief glance translating some motivations and alleviating the man's concerns.

He would stop by Professor Noble's office at another time to discuss these other options and to push his own personal agenda with regards to alchemy. He had made great theoretical strides during his time at Himitsumahou this past summer.

And then the man threw temptation at the Slytherin yet again. A few less than traditional ingredients. It was...appealing and he could even feel his mouth water a bit at being able to work with rarer ingredients and under the man's supervision. But then there was the Nina factor and how these very unique and potentially difficult to obtain ingredients would be wasted with her brewing habits.

"I am very interested in this Dresden Draught," he nodded, the interest in his eyes VERY apparent. He then turned towards Nina and, honestly, could not believe the wager he was about to offer. "How about this, successfully brew a Dresden Draught and brewing an Elixir to Induce Euphoria can be next......and I will drink it."

Because it seemed as though his humiliation and torture was a motivational device for a lot of girls at Hogwarts these days.

Nina could sense just how insufferable her antics were for Eiji Rasting. She almost felt bad for it, but sometimes sacrifices were necessary. Wasting ingredients was simply a means to an end. Besides, she did a convincing enough job to fool most people into believing it was accidental. She simply was not made for the potions life! School was soooooooooooooooooooo hard. Couldn't she just read Witch Weekly, pleaaaaaaaaaase? See. Convincing.

She had been perfecting the act for two and a half terms.

Nina met Eiji's look of interest with an unimpressed one of her own. Dresden Draught? Concentration potions were for Gryffindors. Nina Castillo had no interest in it, though it really did not make much of a difference as her potions during tutoring sessions rarely came out correctly. "... Why would I care if you drank it?" she gave Eiji a strange look. She took very little interest in his humiliation and torture, believe it or not. That sounded like something a sadist would take joy in. Maybe it worked for Trinetta, but Nina was not as easily convinced.

He needed to make her a better wager. So? What would it be?

hermygirl 06-11-2019 01:26 AM

Please forgive me for my tardiness? :3 *puppy eyes*

He replaced the last of the vials on the shelves in the storeroom, before shutting the door. He didn't lock it just yet, aware that the students might yet require some of the ingredients contained inside. Hopefully they wouldn't go to waste; he knew Eiji was a trustworthy brewer...but Nina left a little to be desired. And whilst he understood attempts could go wrong in the brewing process and encouraged practice, he had little patience for those who couldn't be bothered to even try.

"The Elixir to Induce Euphoria isn't covered until the sixth year curriculum," Noble injected, with a pointed look at Nina. "Perhaps if you can convince me that you're worthy of it by brewing a perfect Dresden Draught, I might let you attempt it before then."

As for the wager? Noble rolled his eyes. It was hardly appropriate for a first time brew, and he let out a low grumble. "I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that," he said with a warning tone. "I do not want to be spending my evening in the hospital wing with either of you. If do insist on consuming it, at least stop by my office so I can test its safety first." He'd rather one of his promising students wasn't poisoned before the alchemy class he knew the boy so desperately wanted to attend.

Eni entered into the room with a smile on her face, excited for the extra practice with the Professor and being able to replenish the school's supply. Even just a small amount.

Quickly writing in her details Eniola Abara, Sixth Year, Hufflepuff. She took a seat and waited for the Professor to arrive so they could begin. Setting her bag down beside her she grabbed out her notebook and pen to be ready for any note taking necessary.
