Moving Staircases

The most logical way for you to get from one part of the castle to the next, from down to the dungeons all the way up to the seventh floor, is making use of the staircases. Even though using them is logical, that does not mean it is going to provide the easiest route from Point A to Point B. The staircases in this tower are notorious for moving without warning whether you are walking on them or not. Hopefully luck is on your side today.

Covering the walls from the bottom of the tower to the top are hundreds of portraits. While they may be intriguing, it is important that you stay focused on the task at hand: getting from one flight of stairs to the next. If you're not paying attention, the staircase you are on will move and you'll have to maneuver your way back down or up again or wind up sinking through one of the trick steps. Under no circumstances should you be sliding down the banisters -- doing so will put your life at risk and, if you live to tell the tale, cost you two week's worth of detention.

To anyone

Valencia's fingers tapped out an absent-minded beat on the book she was carrying as she waited for the staircase to move. In typical Ravenclaw fashion, she was on a quest today to find another spot to add to her list of reading spots. Her list was already several locations long, but one could never have too many comfortable nooks. Given the size of the castle, there were bound to be dozens more she had yet to discover.

There wasn’t any particular reason Kay left her office other than she wanted to stretch her legs. She had been cooped up in there for hours reviewing the most recent homework she had collected: an essay on the advantages and disadvantages of electricity. There were still some essays remaining to be graded but a professor could not be working all the time, could she. It was for this reason she was letting her feet take her on its own course.

All too soon she came across the familiar Moving Staircases. “Hello, Ms. Phillips. Not nervous about getting onto the Staircases, are you?’’ Kay was teasing a tad but mostly was serious. She had seen many a student get tricked.

Valencia smiled up at the Professor and shook her head. "Not at all." She was rather used to them now being a second year and all.

"I was just exploring." So her plan was to go wherever the staircase took her. "Are you doing the same?" Did Professors do that? Or did they already know everything?

Kay grinned. She didn’t think so because after all, Valencia had been a student at Hogwarts for a year prior. Surely she had gotten used to the unusual staircases and gotten over any nerves. “Ah, I see. Exploration is always fun.’’ She shook her head. “I was actually just walking by. I’ve done my share of exploring when I was a student here.’’ The woman zoned out for a minute as she reminisced. “I remember feeling very frustrated with these staircases as I would sometimes end up far from where I actually wanted to be.” If Kay remembered correctly, she actually cursed out loud once in her sixth year because of it. “Did you know that it was Rowena Ravenclaw who suggested the stairs move on their own?”
