quill Ancient Runes 1: Put Your Best Foot Forward

credit to Govoni for the template

First thing in the morning the day after the feast you find yourself visiting the Ancient Runes classroom for the very first class of the term, a seminar of sorts where students of all ages have the opportunity to learn together. Perhaps you’ve had the chance to speak with Professor Beryl already, but this is yours (and everyone’s!) first time in her classroom. What should you expect? Well, perhaps not the stool at the front of the classroom, reminiscent of the sorting hat that many encountered at the feast except with an ancient and worn-looking old cowboy boot upon its surface instead of a hat. The boot is complete with a spur. It's made from supple leather and looks like it might want to fall apart at any minute - the front of the boot is even coming up from the sole, looking oddly mouth-like, but it's clean and (despite appearances) doesn’t stink at all.

Professor Beryl stands near the blackboard and greets every student with a smile and a warm welcome. She tells you to take your turn and step up to be sorted by the boot. Sorted how? Well, simply take your own shoe off, put the boot on (it is charmed to resize itself to fit each student), hop around a few times, and it will speak out of its sole and tell you what your MBTI type is! That’s right, before class begins each and every student is expected to be sorted by their temperament.

Once you take your turn, Professor Beryl bids you to take a seat at your desk where you are expected to take out your rune sets, parchment, your rune journal, and a quill.

The blackboard behind Professor Beryl also includes instructions:

Quote:
Greetings and welcome to Ancient Runes!

Once you have taken your turn and had your MBTI type revealed to you by the temperament sorting boot, please take a seat and write your MBTI type at the top of your parchment in large font so that others can see it easily.
ooc: welcome to the first Ancient Runes lesson of the term! Please note this IS your first class with Professor Beryl and she’s looking forward to getting to know your kiddos! You have approximately one day to post arriving before the lesson will continue, however if you miss the arrival you can still include your character trying the boot and getting their results as if they were here all along.

In order to get your MBTI results, I suggest this online quiz or this one but you are welcome to use any online MBTI quiz that you prefer, or if you already know your character’s MBTI simply use that! You can RP the boot sorting your character yourself - it will tell the student their MBTI type out loud (speaking from it's broken sole ) have fun with it! Feel free to PM me with any questions you may have. edit: A/T type is optional to include

edit: the lesson is now underway, but you can still include the boot stuff in your post if you join in after this point. Check the index below for where we are at!

Starting his third year at Hogwarts was an interesting feeling for Taddy. He would taking more classes than his last two years in preparation for O.W.Ls, so his Auntie Elisa told him. He hadn't considered O.W.Ls yet, he had another two years after all. But he did think about the right classes and somehow found himself following his dad's footsteps. Yep, Ancient Runes was one of the choices. Though he seemed more intrigued by it from the start than his Daddy.

As soon as he stepped in, he smiled, "Hi Professor." Smiles were contagious and helped you and others feel good most of the time and he didn't want to be in class feeling bad or bored. Learning should be fun. Now they were apparently going to try on an old boot.

He blinked, being very glad that he didn't practice Flying right before class cause the smell of a sweaty foot was something no one needed to experience in class. Anyways, he replaced the shoe with the boot and started hopping. He wondered if it was going to somehow talk to his foot like the sorting hat. But before he could think anymore on that, "Debater ENTP-A." Oh, there was that older Hufflepuff who got the same thing. That was interesting. Really interesting.

He took his seat to write it all down with his name.

Austin was nervous and excited at the same time. He walked into the classroom and blinked. Why was there an old boot? He glanced up at the black board and noticed the instructions...okay...Austin looked around for the professor. He gave the professor a small smile and a wave. After that, he went up and tried on the boot. It automatically shrunk to fit his foot. Okay...he waited a few minutes before a voice was heard that said.
"Virtuoso ISTP-T." Huh, that was interesting.
Austin took off the boot and headed to an empty seat. When he sat down, he took out his rune sets, his parchment, his rune journal, and a quill and ink bottle out of his duffle. He also took out his personal journal and a pencil, it was a lot faster and easier to write things down if he was called on with a pencil rather then a quill, and set them all on a table.

Having not wanted to take Ancient Runes, but not being able to ignore the argument of 'you won't know if you like it until you try it' from his parents, Jó found himself queuing up to try on a mouldy old cowboy boot. He yawned a few times whilst he waited, failing to cover his mouth with a hand, and eventually took the book and dragged it onto his foot.

And hopped around. Although Józef had pretty good balance, he also had (in his opinion and not Lawra's) a pretty good sense of humour, and so made his hopping as dramatic as he possibly could. Just for the fun of it - his fun. It didn't take long before the boot was talking, though. "ENFP-a: the Campaigner."

Grudgingly, Jó took the boot off and returned it to the stool, before finding his seat. He wrote down what the boot had said, but he definitely didn't understand it. Neither did he really care - all he wanted to know was what his friends had got.

Headmistress Hawthorne had gotten her to have an interest in Runes, and since the woman’s absence, Stasya had continued attending lessons more out of the curiosity as to if the subject was going to stay as interesting. That and challenging, but she rather expected that from most of her lessons now that it was NEWT year. She was used to being busy, and so far she wasn’t stopping. However, one thing she hadn’t expected when she walked into the first lesson of term after breakfast was the worn boot on the stool looking ever so much like an upside-down Sorting Hat.

“Good morning, Professor Beryl,” she greeted the professor with a smile, queuing up behind the other students waiting to try on the boot. It gave her time to try and figure out what her temperament had to do with Runes, anyway, and she was still mulling it over as she’d reached the stool and slipped her shoe off to replace it with the boot. Awkwardly, more so because with her long limbs it was difficult to get the boot on without sitting down, but after a few moments she managed it.

Wondering exactly what spells were on the boot as she tested it by hopping a few times, feeling rather like one of Isa’s rabbits she had visited many times while the older girl had still been here at Hogwarts, she wasn’t surprised when it suddenly spoke. “ENFP-T, THE CAMPAIGNER”

That was interesting, and it reminded her of the term when Headmaster Scrimgeour reigned. The revolution to depose him, specifically, and she glanced over at Archer as she made her way over to a seat near Rylee and took out her necessary supplies, writing the boot’s conclusion at the top of a page clearly. Now to figure out how this connected to Runes.

Despite pretending to loathe Ancient Runes, it was one of her favorite classes of all time. It was also, unfortunately, one of the nerdiest classes of all time. And thus, as a result, she entered the room wearing a well-practiced pout on her face. While Nina did let a polite smile grace her features for a moment to greet her Professor, it didn't last very long. Because upon sight of their first activity, a REAL pout made way onto her face. They were meant to try on an old shoe???

No. Nina Castillo would never.

Especially not when everyone else was putting the same one on. As if having to put the sorting hat on her head last year wasn't enough. She had tried to refuse then and she would most certainly try to refuse now. There was absolutely no way. Some of these people liked to walk around the castle barefoot. Their feet were disgusting. Nina had to draw boundaries and used shoes, were one of them.

So each time the queue grew shorter and she was almost at the front, the Slytherin politely let other students go in front of her and made her way back to the end of the line. "Oh, you can go ahead of me," she motioned the student behind her to step forward, while she took a step out. Back to the back of the queue she went.

Maeve didn't officially take Ancient Runes; but apparently not seeing her aunt (aka former Runes Professor) this summer had the sixth year showing up to the first runes class of the year. Where the blonde instantly found regret upon seeing the queue for a ... sorting??? She didn't think that personality types had anything to do with runes? At least not the kind of runes that her aunt studied.

An old boot though ... was this some kind of metaphor maybe? In that you had to walk a mile in someone else's shoes ... only they weren't walking ... Just had to slip off her shoe and put it on and OH DEAR MERLIN, she hoped her peers had clean feet.

Stepping up to the stool she stood on one foot as she slid her shoe off and into the boot. And hopped around a few times, surprised at how well the shoe fit. Surely not everyone had the same size feet, which had Maeve curious now as to the charms on the boot. Suddenly, as had done with the sorting hat when it was placed on her head five years ago, the boot shouted out quite quickly, "Campaigner - ENFP-A"

Huh. What did that even mean??? She liked to campaign for her friends; was that related? Boot off and her own shoe on, she found a seat near the window to contemplate this some.

Well, that was a relief... though Kaiser supposed that, had all else failed, Professor Beryl probably had some back-up supplies for her less prepared students, even if her classroom rules did require that everyone bring what they needed. He shot a grateful smile at Patrick as he took the spare supplies from him. "Thank you," he murmured, and finally finished setting himself up at his desk.

On his parchment, Kaiser finally wrote down what he had been instructed to write, before sitting back and waiting for the lesson to get going. With any luck, he would manage to keep up with whatever it was they were going to be doing.

.......... uhhhh........

To say that Lucas was confused was an understatement. Because here was a new class with a new teacher and...... people were hopping around in a boot. And the boot was shouting out random letters that didn’t help with his confusion, only making him scratch his curls as he stood by the door.

It was a moment or two later that the third year shuffled forwards, joining the line of other students. His eyes first found the new Professor, who got a simple "Hello, Professor," and a small smile. It was then that his eyes landed on the board which, uh, started to make more sense.

So put on the boot, hop around and..... get sorted? Wasn’t one sorting enough??

That funny butterfly feeling in his stomach was starting to return and he found himself wrangling his hands as he watched everyone getting sorted. He reaaaaaaaaaally didn't like the idea of being sorted in front of everyone. And did he have to make conversation with it? Because the Sorting Hat had been speaking to him the entire time and he really didn't want to be told that he was like his father another-

..........

Huh?

Blinking, he forced his attention onto the student in front of him, a girl with long hair (Nina) who said he could go ahead? Well, okay, then. "Oh, uh, thanks," he muttered, flashing her a small smile. Did he have time to wander why she was stepping back? No. He was far too focused on the boot and-

Oh, it was his turn? Yeah, okay.

Stepping up to the stool, he slid off one of his shoes and placed the boot on, instead. His first thought? How old this boot was. It looked like it was two hops away from falling apart. And was it clean? Lucas wrinkled his nose slightly as he looked over the boot and then at the Professor and then back again. It was comfortable, so there was that.

There was only one thing for it: Hop, hop, hop, hop, hop......

He half-expected the shoe to start talking to him, telling him everything he didn't want to know, but apparently, that wasn't happening today. Because the shoe was quiet. Was it working? Did he not have an MB-whatever ty-

"INFP-T: the Mediator!"

Nevermind.

Glad to be taking the shoe off, Lucas put his own black shoes back on again and went to sit down. Where? He didn't really care, just somewhere away from the spotlight. Taking a seat, he hastily scribbled down whatever the old boot had said onto a spare piece of parchment before sitting back. Was the Professor going to explain? Please explain.

you wanna fite? | 💚 nickleback 💚 | Uh, anyway.

Maxie had greeted the new professor with his usual nod and uncomfortable smile. While only just a second-year, Maxie had already gotten accustomed to Hogwarts and its game of Musical Professors. This one seemed pretty fine so far, but it was still early on.. Anything could happen.

The Hufflepuff had been very seriously considering ignoring the boot altogether, but before he could think of a feasible reason why, Nina Castillo - the very girl who had kissed his cheek without even a proper introduction - was urging him on. Having properly misunderstood the situation, Maxie and his gangly limbs hurried forward, past the Slytherin girl and her nice-smelling curls, to the boot and whatever judgement it would pass unto him.

but she hadn't been speaking to him at all, but to Dakest. How did Maxie know this? Because the other boy had thanked her, even.

Cool. yeah, cool. Maxie decided, as he waited his turn, to stare at the floor. healthy coping mechanisms.

He wriggled out of his sneaker (a very clean Off-White Air Jordan, and slippered his foot into the spurred shoe. It shrunk down, as was to be expected and that was where the embarrassment began to leak in. Hopping? Hopping? No, he most certainly didn't want to. It didn't matter that everyone else already had or was going to. Maxie was not the type to jump off a bridge after his friends and he wasn't the type to hop around either.

But the boot.. was on.

It was on.

and people were waiting.

and his brow had begun to sweat.

and it somehow felt as if the boot were becoming smaller- tighter- almost uncomfortably.

"F-fine," He grunted, hopping once, then twice, and then once more for an unhappy three- and all the while he was as red as red could be. Miserable, Maxie flinched as the boot coughed and opened up a mouth the Hufflepuff wasn't happy to see.

"ISTJ-T."

Relieved, and curious, Maxie stepped out of the now much larger boot and rushed off to a quiet corner where he could put back on his Jordan and be miserable in peace.

curly haired prefect - "sometimes I get angry!" - 30/90 - *chicken emoji* - probably @ Disney - I speak dog

The idea of putting the Sorting Hat on her head had not phased Nettie in the slightest four years ago. Putting on a boot, though? That was making her shudder inside. This was FEET we were talking about! By the time kids got to Hogwarts, she assumed most people knew to wash their hair on a daily basis. But she had seen how gross adult feet could get - her dad's feet were NASTY - so she had very low hopes for her classmates. She only hoped that this new professor had put some sort of hygiene spell on this boot because if she got some sort of foot fungus from this, she was going to RIOT.

Wrinkling her nose slightly, she took off her ballet flat - thankfully she'd worn tights with her uniform today, so she at least had THAT to protect her precious feet - and slipped the boot on to her foot when her turn came around. Now she had to...hop around? Ok. Whatever she had to do to get this thing off ASAP...

She bounced in place a few times, and thankfully it only took a few little leaps before the mouth of the boot opened up and yelled out her personality type.

"ENTJ-T - The Commander!" the boot shouted out to the whole class. That was just a bunch of letters to Nettie at this moment...but she hadn't heard anyone else get called with those same letters. What did this all MEAN? Was she special? Unique? Or just a weirdo who was going to end up being partnered with the professor at the end of all of this...or maybe someone HAD been called with those letters. Honestly, there were so many letters being shouted left and right it was hard to keep track.

Taking the boot off and handing it to the next person, she grabbed her boot and then headed to her desk. She took out a parchment and wrote her sorting in large letters before putting it up on her desk for everyone to see.

Analiese walked into the Ancient Runes classroom and greeted the professor. That was when she noticed the boot. Why was there a boot on a chair? And the chair was reminiscent of the one she sat on when she was sorted. Was she just to put it on? She strode to the stool and put on the shoe.

Er... Now what? Analiese turned around and looked at the board. No. No, Analiese Allanach-Senchuri was not hopping around in an old cowboy boot. She had no choice anyway. The 11-year-old reluctantly stood up and hopped around. Analiese gasped a little as the mouth of the boot opened.

"INFJ-T, The Advocate!"

What on Earth did it even say? The first part was a bunch of letters - something like INFJ-T - and the second part was The Advocate. Analiese shrugged and took the shoe off. She found her desk and sat down. She then pulled out a piece of parchment and wrote the result down.

What on Earth did it even say? The first part was a bunch of letters - something like INFJ-T - and the second part was The Advocate. Analiese shrugged and took the shoe off. She found her desk and sat down. She then pulled out a piece of parchment and wrote the result down.

Austin noticed as Ana walked in. He watched her curiously as she looked a bit confused as to what to do. He snorted as she realized she had to hop around on the boot to make it work.

Sounded right. She took the boot back off and handed it off to the next unlucky soul before putting her own shoe back on and taking her seat with an "Odd choice for an activity, Professor." No offense meant.

After writing the result on her parchment, she sat back to watch everyone else.

And the first student to step up was a prefect, a plucky seeming one, which didn't bother Carmine in the slightest. Odd, was it? Good. She wanted her students to be kept guessing and certainly didn't want anyone who walked into her classroom to walk out again thinking the subject was a bore.

"I should hope so." She said with a twinkle in her eyes.

Actually, he supposed he should be glad that he passed the test with a positive letter at all.

He made sure that his Ravenclaw tie was properly straight and his sleeves were folded down to make sure he gave a good first impression. Dorian entered the classroom and looked for the professor first and spotted her at the blackboard. He greeted her back before he looked around for any sign on what they would be doing today. It did not take long for him to notice Calrissian trying on the boot and then he saw the sole crack open just like the sorting hat would do and it spoke. Huh...interesting.

Getting the idea of what he was about to do, the sixth year patiently waited until it was his turn and pulled off his own shoe to try the boot on when the time came. He felt a bit silly, standing there with two different kind of shoes on, not to mention that he had to hop on place which he wondered if they REALLY had to do that or if it was just for amusement but he still did it. He hopped and hopped until the sole cracked open and a voice told him..."Advocate - INFJ-T" ....alright...he was intrigued to find out what that meant. He took off the boot and put on his own shoe before finding a seat near the front of the class and placed his supplies on the desk and wrote down his result on the piece of parchment before leaning back in his seat to watch the others get sorted.

"Welcome to Runes." Professor Beryl said, once the boy had sat down, following the instructions.

And... then she saw the ancient, worn-looking cowboy boot. That they were instructed to put on. Hanna's face nearly betrayed what she was thinking. Not so much a germaphobe, Hanna didn't often put on shoes of unknown origin. Never, actually. But she also wasn't going to say no to the activity, so she removed one of her shoes and replaced it with the shoe on display. After hopping around and feeling the shoe shrink to fit her foot, the sole opened up into a mouth shape and said "Defender; ISFJ-A." Having absolutely no idea what that even meant, Hanna removed the boot, placed it back onto the stool, and headed to a free chair, offering a wave to her peers as she did so, getting her rune set, a roll of parchment, her rune journal, and quill with her new pot of black ink.

It was lovely to see students following the instructions without complaint. Not that Carmine expected otherwise but all the same, it sent a lovely precedent that she hoped would continue. She smiled a warm welcome.

"I wonder what that means," she thought to herself as she removed the boot from her foot, placed it back on the stool and put her own shoe back on. Daisy then sat down at an empty seat near Archer and retrieved her rune journal, set of runes, quill, ink and parchment. She grabbed her parchment, quill and ink and wrote:

Upon reading the instructions, her excitement for things only escalated, and she took no time in putting on the shoe, though for a moment she did wonder and ended up wrinkling her nose at the thought of ... all the dirty feet that had already been there.

And no sooner had she put it on, the boot announced: Protagonist - ENFJ-T.

Curious, so curious, the brunette found herself a seat - and wrote it down as instructed.

"Good morning to you! I quite agree. A lovely day." Professor Beryl answered, smiling kindly. Hopefully the day would only be improved for the young lady!

And stepping into the Ancient Runes classroom greeting the professor silently with a polite nod, brought him nothing but skepticism.

A boot. To sort their MBTI type? What did that even mean? Still Eiji was perfectly capable of follow instructions when given and so he waited in line behind his peers until it was his turn to slip the boot on. Did he really have to hop though? He didn't even do that when he was testing out new shoes for purchase. ".....does it matter which foot?" he asked with a raised brow while watching those before him for any sort of hint. Though there seemed no real rhyme or reason to which, likely the dominant foot if he had to guess. But before he could receive a response, it was his turn and he decided to just not think too hard about this and slipped off his left shoe and then fitted it into the boot. No hopping here, though he did flex his foot and push up on to his tip toes and roll back on to his heel instead. It was while he had rolled back on to the heel that the boot had initially attempted to announce this type rubbish, but it was muffled and spoken into the ground and therefore came out like utter nonsense.

Likely what he was going to find this whole M...MBTI type busisness to be.

So, flattening his foot, he allowed the boot a second attempt to speak.

"ISTJ-A...SENTINEL...LOGISTICIAN!"

"....right."

He knew what sentinel meant and he could figure out what logistician meant, but so what?

Glancing over at Professor Beryl again inquisitively before sitting himself beside Missa and wrote down what the boot had said on his parchment and then.......waited. "Protagonist," he smirked at her in amusement. "Interesting." What did this have to do with the Elder Futhark, exactly?

"Welcome!" Professor Beryl said, watching the young boy take his turn and then take a seat. And good, he was showing interest and curiosity in one of his classmate's results! That boded well for the lesson ahead.

Easy enough concept, even for him. When it was his turn, Kaiser stepped up, removed his shoe, and tried on the funny looking boot, leaving his foot hovering up in the air, as he'd already seen exactly what part it spoke from.

"ISFP-T... The Adventurer..."

Adventurer? Well, that... okay, that sounded about right to him. Kaiser slipped the boot back off and replaced it with his own shoe, then headed to his desk and started getting out what he needed. He had a rune set, he had a rune journal... ah... he did not have parchment, or a quill, or ink...

Problematic.

Kaiser had forgotten about that. He looked around, seeking out a friend or a least an acquaintance who might be willing to donate to his cause.

Oh yes, morning again. Professor Beryl smiled kindly in welcome and kept an unobtrusive eye on the young man. What was he doing, hmm?

"Good day, Professor." Her peach-tinted lips curved into a smile as she greeted the woman.

A temperament sorting boot, huh?

The Hufflepuff looked curiously before taking of one of her flat shoe. First there was a sorting hat that was used for sorting her into the house and now... this. Interesting, the thought. She put her right foot into the boot and it didn't take a long time before it spoke. "ENTERTAINER, ESFP-T!"

..... huh.

So she's an Entertainer. Did this mean she should pursue a career in entertainment industry after Hogwarts? Let's just not thinking about that first. "You don't mind if I sit here, do you?" Aurora decided to join Archer after dealing with the sorting boot. Just like what the instruction had said, she wrote her type at the top of parchment.

Not being able to help himself he turned to the professor “Uh Professor, please tell me you’re a secret cowboy? I mean, what happened to the other boot? Did you lose it in some type of stand-off?”. Small waves of laughter emulated from him as he waited patiently to try on the boot, excitement building as he watched some of the previous students hopping up and down in a cowboy boot, looking slightly ridiculous yet somewhat amusing.

Finally, after a few minutes, it was his turn to try on the tattered, well-worn boot. Slipping his shoe off quickly, he picked up the boot, give the spur a little spin and then carefully slid it onto his foot before finally looking down at it wide eyed with amusement. "Hey guys, watcha think? Is this a good look for me?” sticking his leg out with the boot on as it to model it. Without further ado, he hopped on the boot for a few seconds before it finally shouted out

“ISFP- Adventurer”.

“Uh...Professor, are we supposed to know what that means?” unsure exactly what ISFP exactly meant, he took the boot off and handed it to the next person. Adventurer? Well that sounded cool and all but the rest of it? That he would have to research at the library later if he didn’t find out this lesson. Taking a seat a little off to the left, he pulled out his items and made a note of exactly what the old boot had said at the top of his parchment.

Eyes twinkling at the questions spilling from the boy, Carmine gave him a wink. "Yippee ki yay." She said. And when he sat down and asked another question she chuckled. "You'll find out." In detail appropriate for the lesson of course. Beyond that she'd absolutely encourage him to do further research.

“Campaigner, ENFP-A!”

Patrick shrugged his shoulder and turned to go grab a seat. He headed back to grab a seat. When he walked by Aurora he gave her a small waive. He remembered meeting her in Diagon Alley. He ended up behind her but near Kiaser. He noticed he looked frazzled, ”You okay man?”

Ah, so this boot was a weird sorting device. Was it as.....sentient as the sorting hat, though?

The blonde approached the front of the classroom. "Good morning, Professor," she greeted the new professor as she wiggled her right shoe off. "What's your" - Tessa squinted at the blackboard - "MBTI type, Professor?" Surely that was a reasonable thing to ask, considering all the students were revealing theirs. She slipped on the old boot without too much thought. Was the hopping necessary? Not that she minded doing it.....it just seemed like a strange requirement is all.

..........Hop. Hop. Hop.

After a few moment, a voice sounded from the cracked sole of the boot.
"ESFP-A.....ENTERTAINER!"
Entertainer..... Now that sounded PERFECT to her. What else could she hope to be? She had heard some other students get thing like Logistician, Protagonist, and Campaigner shouted at them. She didn't know what exactly they implied, but they sounded boring in comparison to Entertainer.

Tessa took a random seat towards the front of the classroom and, after retrieving parchment, ink, and a quill from her bag, wrote her type in LARGE writing at the top of the parchment.

"Why I'm ENFJ myself." Professor Beryl answered, smiling at the question. She watched the girl do what was instructed on the blackboard and gave her an appreciative smile. Nice to see. Some very well-behaved students so far!

Eloise couldnt say that was wrong or anything since she had no idea what was even happening right now.

It didn't take her long to figure out what this was about. So this shoe was charmed like the Sorting Hat? and it told you what your temperament was?? That was some amazing magic. Even though the thought of putting on a shoe that a dozen other people had already worn was disgusting, she was still willing to try it and see what her result would be. When it was her turn, she stepped up, took off her own shoe and put on the old sorting boot, which shrunk a little bit to fit her small foot. Imitating the students before her, she hopped around a few times (she was in a good mood, after all) and heard the boot say, "The Commander, ENTJ-A!"

The Commander, she liked it. "Good morning, Professor Beryl!" Jade said to the new teacher as she put on her own shoe and went to take a seat. She then took out her equipment, arranged it neatly on her desk and wrote her MBTI result on top of her parchment in large letters so that everyone in the class could see that she was a Commander.

"Good morning!" Professor Beryl responded warmly after watching the young girl take her turn.

Nope

her next leap she tripped up and fell but caught herself. Getting back up she chuckled embarrassed but jumped again before it looked super bad. Thankful that she heard a voice "Campaigner ENFP-T".

Bending down she took the boot off and gave it to the next person waiting. "That was... interesting. Good morning professor, I'm Chloe McCarthy." It was always good to introduce herself, right?

Moving to find a seat she wrote the words big on her paper.

That was than she noticed the writing on the board instructing them all to put on a 'boot' to learn what their MBTI type is. Different but nothing to out of the ordinary for this place.

Hop. Hop. Hoppity-hop. Hop.

Uhhhh... how long was she supposed to hop about?

It was right as she was about to hop another time that the sad looking boot called out loudly,

"CONSUL, ESFJ-T!"

Welp, that just answered her question. Consul huh? That sounded somewhat interesting to her. Taking the boot off and putting her own shoe back on, Rylee made her way to seat. Sneakers? Carmine eyed the girl's feet disapprovingly. "Young lady, that footwear is not correct uniform. Where are your school shoes?" Black? Leather or similar? Like everyone else? Hmmm? When it was finally her turn, she slipped the boot on and did what Professor Beryl had suggested and hopped around on the spot a few times before the broken sole (did it have a soul? Was that how it could talk?) said to the classroom; ”Logistician - ISTJ-T type”.

Well, okay.

Slipping her foot from the boot, she pushed her foot into her own heeled brogue before taking the seat that the Professor pointed out for her. Once she had her runes, books and supplies on her desk she neatly wrote ‘Logistician - ISTJ - T type’ on the top of her parchment.

And, even though it was new term, he took a seat at the desk where he usually last year, soon pulling out all of his runic supplies. A quick glance at the board reminded him to write out those letters on his parchment - ISTJ. Also, what did MBTI mean?

"Good Morning!" Carmine responded in kind, noticing the boy seemed to head right to a particular desk. Well everyone had their favourites!

Were they...going to cast stones into the boot? That seemed unlikely, but it was new content either. It wasn't until he read the instructions on the board that he realized what he needed to do. That must explain why everyone was putting it on. Apparently, the boot was supposed to tell what their MBTI type was.

...For some reason, MBTI sounded familiar. The Ravenclaw wondered if he's read that somewhere.

However, as all Drewett Slinkhards were, the fifth year removed his shoe and put on the boot when it was his turn. It was strange at first, feeling the boot enclose around his foot to fit his size. He flexed his toes a little as he stood up and briefly walked around, before he hopped in place. This was embarrassing. Drewett didn't want to do this for too long. Maybe he'd just—"INFJ-T, the advocate!"

He knew exactly what that was now. It made sense that it was familiar. In fact, Drewett had read about personality types before, just recently during the summer on his free time. Yeah, he read almost about everything so that came to no surprise, but personalities and identities were topics that the Ravenclaw had found rather intriguing. The objectivities in the subjective were topics that interested him. "M-Myer Briggs, professor?" He asked as he removed the boot from his foot, replacing it on the stool and wearing his own shoe again. He had thought about what his MBTI type would be before, but it was nice to finally know what it was. Perhaps the sorting boot, whatever its name was, was a reliable source.

After writing down his MBTI type on the parchment as instructed, Drewett went to take a seat beside Lenora. "Hey," he said with a smile as he took out the necessary things from his bag.

"Good morning! That's right," Or close enough. "Myers-Briggs!" She smiled as the boy went ahead and followed instructions. Another good one!

"Hello, welcome to Ancient Runes!" Carmine smiled right back in warm welcome. She wanted her students to feel at ease in here, even if sometimes they might come across things that might surprise them a little.

Carmine smiled and waved back at the boy when he noticed her and watched him take his turn. She didn't mind the pencil for writing, but was pleased to see he still had the requested equipment.

Tired was he? Carmine assumed it was sleepiness bringing out the yawns rather than boredom. It was too soon to be bored! She smiled watching his hopping antics though. Perhaps this young man would like this subject in spite of himself.

"Good morning!" Carmine greeted the prefect.

"Go ahead." Carmine invited the young girl, who was clearly reluctant. Guessing the possible reason for her reluctance, Professor Beryl added: "Don't worry, its bespelled for hygiene, I promise." She WAS the healer after all. She gave her a small, encouraging wink.

A thinker, this one? She seemed in her own head. Carmine smiled at her in welcome all the same. Nothing wrong with that!

"Hello and welcome!" Carmine said with warmth, eyes twinkling at the young boy when he kept shooting looks at her. The answers would come!

Carmine had smiled at the boy in return but what was this? Another one in non-uniform footwear? She cast a disappointed look at the boy's feet.

"Sneakers are not uniform items, young man. You should be wearing your school shoes. We have a little time before we begin - if you're quick you'll be back in time and I won't have to take any house points. Please go change your shoes to your approved school shoes now." Her look was not unkind, but it was firm. It did not escape her notice that this one was a Hufflepuff and therefore he had far more distance to cover than the other, a Gryffindor, which was a shame but that was how the cookie crumbled. Tut tut. Did she need to put a note on her noticeboard about this? School uniform was uniform for a reason!

Carmine welcomed the young lady and watched her take her turn, pleased to see her following the given instructions even if there did seem to be a little reluctance there.

Er...

Some minutes later with the right leathery black shoes on Ellie waved slightly to Professor Beryl to show that she now wore the appropriate shoes. Still with her cheeks flushed pink she retook her seat and stuck her nose in her ancient runes textbook and started to read. Anything to not have to look at any eyes from the lions present.

Avalon nearly stopped in her tracks as she entered the ancient runes classroom and saw a student hopping around in a cruddy old boot. What in the world? Her very first class at Hogwarts - and this was what they were doing? She tried to mask the look of confusion on her face as she read the instructions on the blackboard and made her way to the line of students waiting to try on the boot. "Good morning, Professor Beryl!" Avalon said politely as she made eye contact with her ancient runes teacher. Ancient runes wasn't on the top of her favorite subject list, but Avalon was glad to see that the professor seemed kind.

She wondered what an MBTI type was as she took off her uniform shoe and slipped on the boot. It seemed to be yelling out strange letters to the students who had tried it on before her, and to be honest, Avalon didn't understand what any of it meant. Swallowing any bit of potential embarrassment (at least all the students had to jump around and look like fools -- it wasn't just her), Avalon took a few spirited hops around the stool. "INFJ-T!" the boot bellowed. Whatever that meant. Avalon made her way to an aisle seat toward the front of the room and took out her supplies for the class. After organizing them neatly on her desk, she scrawled her letters on the top of a fresh piece of parchment. She suppressed a giggle as a few other students jumped around the front of the room, trying to hear their own letters. Everyone looked so silly! She had to admit that she was interested where this lesson was going.

Analiese smiled back at Professor Beryl. "Professor, what does this have to do with today's lesson?" She was just curious. Like, what do runes have to do with wearing an old shoe and hopping
around?

Analiese watched as an older Griffindor girl rushed out, probably to get something she forgot. The 11-year-old turned took out her journal and drew a majestic thunderbird whilst waiting for the rest of the students to be 'sorted'.

While constantly moving back to the end of the line wasn’t exactly a long term solution, it was unfortunately all she could think to do for the moment. It was, however, buying her some time before she had to come up with another plan. Perhaps she could—Oh. Nina looked up at her Professor with wide eyes. She hadn’t meant to draw any attention to herself. With cheeks burning pink, the fourth year nodded her head obediently. She wasn’t exactly trying to cause a scene in any of her classes, thank you very much. Most certainly not on the first day.

Despite the fact that she STILL did not want to stick her foot in some rando shoe, she finally stayed in the queue without making another excuse to go back to the end. Bespelled for hygiene did not sound promising. What if the shoe gave her some kind of foot fungus??? Nina was not convinced.

And so when her turn came, the Slytherin quickly slipped it on with a look of utter dissatisfaction. This was horrible. Even more horrible was the fact that those already sat at their desks were all watching her sorting. It was the one good thing about transferring midterm. You did not have to sit in front of the entire school while a hat spoke your destiny aloud. She imagined that experiencing the sorting in front of others was much like standing here with an over exuberant shoe on her foot. After having watched several dozen others go before her, Nina knew that she was meant to hop a few times to give the shoe the opportunity to … do its thing.

This was ridiculous on every level.

It was as if the shoe was keeping its sole shut just to spite her. “INTJ-T,” the boot FINALLY spoke "The Architect." Nina was incredibly quick to pry it off her foot before quickly making way to sit in one of the few remaining seats. Once seated she followed the rest of the instructions rather methodically, reaching into her INCREDIBLY organized bag and pulling out parchment and a quill. She didn't know how she felt about others knowing her personality type, especially complete strangers. Actually, she knew exactly how she felt about it. Uncomfortable.

Jackson entered his first class of the year and found his new professor near the board. “Good morning, Profesor Beryl,” he said with a smile and nod. His attention was fairly immediately taken though when he saw… was that a boot? They were getting Sorted again? Wait… What? His Embeetee what? He watched from the side as a few classmates went ahead of him. Ahh okay, he understood. Finally it was his turn, and Jackson kicked off his shoe in favor of the old boot. Once on, he marveled at the magic of it resizing on its own. He almost forgot to hop! “Oh!” he let out, remembering. A little leap here, a jump there… and... maybe he was being too hard on the shoe and muffling its voice? And just as Jackson began lifting his foot to look at the shoe... “Entertainer – ESFP-A!!” After a moment to get over his getting yelled at by a shoe, Jackson took the boot off, replacing it with his own less magical one. “Oh good, more letters…” he said, having no idea what the heck they meant. He took his seat, wrote

And as Aaron had feared (and anticipated).... he'd overslept. On the first day back to lessons. He'd been quick to dress, relieved at his own foresight in hanging the robe up from the previous night, Perfect pin already attached to it. In fact, the Hufflepuff had pressed his entire uniform in preparation. He'd foreseen many of these "late" mornings for himself.

The "seer" gift finally seemed useful for something.

Hair artfully tousled, Aaron stepped into the Runes classroom, eyes quickly sweeping over the assembled group. His eyes rested heavily on Maxie for a moment, uncertainty coloring his face.... but it eventually passed and he proceeded inside, dropping his bag so he could slip on the boot. One of the advantages of arriving so late was that there wasn't much of a line awaiting to try on the boot... Scratch that, no line... as Jackson finished up. Nodding to his fellow Prefect as he passed to the stool, Aaron quickly toed out of his own polished shoe...and then sat so he wouldn't face plant when trying it on. It looked like it might fall apart at any moment, so he tried his best to be gentle with his treatment.

The spur was adorable, though.... Perhaps he'd add a pair of cowboy boots to his wardrobe. West would approve... He considered owling him, hopping about with the boot on. He made a little game of it, entertaining himself and marveling at how comfortable it felt on his foot........ "ENFP-T..... the Campaigner!" Startled by the loud noise coming from his feet, Aaron blinked a few times...before breaking out into soft laughter.

In fact, he was still giggling as he removed the shoe and moved back to where Maxie was sat, placing himself in a seat nearby. He didn't greet his young friend, sensing that he wouldn't appreciate words right now. Aaron was more there as silent support, as always. Digging around in his bag, he started removing things, and then writing things... As an introduction to himself, even though he also sensed he and Professor Beryl would become great friends.

Rhibear ~ Madam Solo ~ Dark Brooding Girl ~ Accio Jedi ~ Gryffinclaw ~ Just a doll

Even before Tina came to Hogwarts, Ancient Runes was one of the subjects she struggled with most. She wasn't sure why she didn't decide to drop it this term… maybe it was out of respect for Professor Flamel (who she thought would be back this term when she'd decided over the summer which classes she wanted to continue), or maybe it was her overachieving tendencies and natural thirst for knowledge stopping her. Either way, she'd managed a passing grade on her OWL last term, and now she was here and ready to learn.

The first thing Tina noticed upon entering the classroom was the old leather boot on tie stool. At first, she thought it might be a portkey, but she reminded herself that this wasn't charms class. Maybe there was a way to make portkeys using runes? That would be interesting! Then she saw the directions on the board and the professor standing beside it. “Good morning, Professor Beryl,”Tina greeted with a polite nod toward the teacher. That was her name, right? There were a lot of new professors to keep track of this term, and she kinda zoned out halfway through the staff introductions at the feast.

The dark-haired Ravenclaw's mind was buzzing with questions as she waited in the queue to get sorted. How did one's MBTI type relate to ancient runes? Or.. *perhaps it wasn't the type but the boot itself? She couldn't help but notice the similarities between that boot and the sorting hat. Was that what they were learning… how to magically give sentience to random objects? Could that be done with runes?

Most of all, she wondered why hopping? Wouldn't the boot be able to determine their type just as well if they walked normally? Tina was sure there must be a reason behind it (hopefully an academic one), but the idea of hopping around in front of everybody still made her uneasy. Looking silly and embarrassing herself wasn't her idea of a good start to the term, but it wasn't worth balking about it. As long as nobody laughed at her, she'd survive… and if anyone did laugh, she'd deal with them after class.

When her turn came, Tina slipped off her school shoe and pulled the boot on. She kept her head down, refusing to lock eyes with anyone as she hopped once, twice, three times. After what seemed like forever but could've only been a few seconds. the boot's sole opened, and it screamed, “INTJ-T… Architect!”

Thank Merlin that was over! Tina replaced her shoe and put the boot back on the stool for the next person. She quickly made her way to her seat, neatly arranged her supplies on her desk, and picked up a quill to write on her parchment:
Quote:
Tina Dantes
6th year, Ravenclaw
INTJ-T
The Architect
When she was done, Tina looked quizzically up at the professor. She still had a nagging question on her mind! “Professor, just out of curiosity… is there something about the act of hopping that helps the boot determine our type better than just walking or standing?” she asked, hoping her question wouldn't seem disrespectful.

At the other schools they hadn't been as particular about footwear so she had thought she could wear any comfortable shoes she wanted. With a last glance at the professor Ellie quickly left the classroom and sprinted up to her dorm. Luckily the Gryffindor common room wasn't very far from Ancient Runes.

"No harm done." The girl would remember for next time, Carmine was sure, and that was the important part. She didn't think it was intentional breaking of the rules and she liked to establish rules in as reasonable a manner as possible.

When the girl returned she smiled her approval but said nothing else. They were going to start soon and she was just in time.

"Good morning." Carmine answered warmly, pleased to see the girl willingly getting into the spirit of things and following the instructions.

"I promise you'll find that out shortly, my dear." Carmine answered kindly. Very soon in fact. The question didn't bother her - curiosity wasn't a bad thing in the learning dimension after all. She also didn't mind that the girl was sketching in her journal, so long as she paid attention when it was time to.

"There we are. Not so difficult. Thank you." For cooperating. Carmine smiled kindly at the girl and left her to unpacking her things.

Once on, he marveled at the magic of it resizing on its own. He almost forgot to hop! “Oh!” he let out, remembering. A little leap here, a jump there… and... maybe he was being too hard on the shoe and muffling its voice? Well, if ‘Entertainer’ was any kind of hint, Jackson would say that he probably wouldn’t have too many arguments with whatever this personality test said about him.

"Good morning!" Carmine answered warmly as the prefect went ahead and took his turn. Right on time and everything! And she had to admit that the spectacle of the hopping WAS rather entertaining.

"Welcome to Runes class!" Professor Beryl greeted the latest arrival. Still on time, he was, and tidy, which she appreciated. Especially given prefects really ought to lead by example.

"It simply wakes the boot up, dear. Its quite old as you must have noticed. Hopping about helps activate the magic." She certainly didn't mind questions, not at all!

"Alright everyone! Thank you for trying on my boot! I promise you its perfectly clean and safe so those of you still concerned please set your minds at ease." Carmine said, addressing all the students and making eye contact with a few that had made their reluctance a liiiittle more obvious.

"I'm Carmine Beryl, not only am I your new Ancient Runes professor, I'm also the healer here at Hogwarts. As such you can choose if you'd rather address me as Professor Beryl or Healer Beryl, both are correct, simply pick whatever you are more comfortable with." She told them conversationally. So far most students had made their decision about what to call her based on the context in which they were speaking, which suited her just fine. She just thought it was a good idea to let them know up front that she did not mind either.

"Now I'm sure many of you are wondering what on earth this MBTI and boot business has to do with Ancient Runes and the Elder Futhark in particular, especially those of you who already have some familiarity with either topic. Lets start with a brief touch on what the MBTI is. MBTI stands for Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. It is an introspective assessment tool that measures psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions." She said, tapping the blackboard with her wand to clear it off.

"Rather than taking a hard copy test and measuring up your results based on your answers, this boot here has been enchanted to do all the hard work for us. Each of you got a four letter result. There are sixteen possible combinations, double that if you count the A or T qualifier on the end of that, but for today's purposes we're disregarding that value." Carmine tapped a stack of papers on the desk at the front of the room and they began flying around, handing themselves out.

"Your first handout has a very brief breakdown of these scales just for your information. If you wish to know more there are textbooks at the front of the classroom that you may take a look at." She said. "It also lists each of the sixteen types and some keywords associated with these types."

SPOILER!!: handout 1
MBTI Scales
Extroversion (E) - Introversion (I)
Extroverts are "outward-turning" and tend to be action-oriented, enjoy more frequent social interaction, and feel energized after spending time with other people. Introverts are "inward-turning" and tend to be thought-oriented, enjoy deep and meaningful social interactions, and feel recharged after spending time alone.

Sensing (S) - Intuition (N)
People who prefer sensing tend to pay a great deal of attention to reality, particularly to what they can learn from their own senses. They tend to focus on facts and details and enjoy getting hands-on experience. Those who prefer intuition pay more attention to things like patterns and impressions. They enjoy thinking about possibilities, imagining the future, and abstract theories.

Thinking (T) - Feeling (F)
People who prefer thinking place a greater emphasis on facts and objective data. They tend to be consistent, logical, and impersonal when weighing a decision. Those to prefer feeling are more likely to consider people and emotions when arriving at a conclusion.

Judging (J) - Perceiving (P)
Those who lean toward judging prefer structure and firm decisions. People who lean toward perceiving are more open, flexible, and adaptable.

"I encourage you to add your own keywords to this list as we go. You may make use of the textbooks at the front of the class for more information on the different traits and strengths and weaknesses associated with the types." Carmine said, looking around to check that everyone had a sheet flying to them. Good! "You'll notice the boot had names for most of the types beyond the four letters, like Entertainer or Commander or other exciting things like that. Different books will often call them different things, but the one thing that is constant is the four letter type code so I'll be referring to each type by the four letters to be consistent." Just made it easier.

"Now, the goal of knowing about personality type is to understand and appreciate differences between people. All types are equal, there is no best type. By nature it is an introspective, self-assessment tool. That means you're looking and assessing inward. You already have your type written across the top of your parchment - for those of you who haven't yet, please make sure your name is there too, so I can read them and get to know you all - I promise I'll remember them by the end of the week!" She was very good with names as it was, but not a psychic.

"Consider your type, and making use of the handout plus referring to the textbooks at the front of the class, I would like you all to come up with three-five words associated with your type. Once you've done this, I want you all to select one or two runes from your runeset that you feel are best associated with each of the words you chose. You can use your rune dictionaries, and you can discuss your choices with each other, and again, there are textbooks at the front of the class that you can refer to for some of the meanings associated with the MBTI as well as with the Elder Futhark runes, which are the ones we are using today. Take your time, don't worry about being 'wrong' Our goal is to practice with rune meanings and think critically about how to make connections between meanings." She didn't want anyone to stress about it, this was a journey, learning how to intuit such things and draw comparisons and correlations.

"I'll give you a few examples. A key trait to describe INFJ could include 'looks beneath the surface' An appropriate runic association might be Laguz to represent hidden depths. A word to describe ESTP might be 'risktaker' and a rune association could be Nauthiz to represent facing your fears." Did they understand? "Give it a try. I'll be walking around and offering assistance if anyone needs it. Lets begin."

ooc: Welcome everyone! The mini activity portion of the lesson starts now. Your character has a handout but there are other resources that can be used too! I've listed some below but please feel free to do your own googling or use your own favourite sites.

MBTI resources:
16 Personalities
personality page
Myers Briggs Personality Test

Runes resources:
Sunnyway Runes

I suggest the above site, however if you're feeling extra or you don't like that one, further resources can be found listed here under the 'research library' spoiler, including old 'textbooks' compiled by SS staff members in the past.

Quote:
To reiterate the instructions are as follows:
1) List 3-5 keywords/phrases that describe traits/strengths/weaknesses of your character's MBTI type
2) Pick 1-2 runes per keyword/phrase that your character feels have associated meanings.
3) Write it down! (They are allowed to discuss with each other, so have fun and interact)
You have at least 48 hours to do this (2-3 days depending on responses and on how many times I feel the need to rewatch GoT obviously). I will be posting Carmine coming around and chatting and watching everyone, but if you specifically need her attention please title your post 'professor' or something like that so I don't miss it by accident. [As always, you can VM or PM me or nudge me elsewhere if you have any questions or need clarification.

Did the Professor just make a cowboy sound? Smirking at his new professor, he scribbled his name at the top of his page and continued to watch his fellow students try on the boot one by one, still slightly amused at his professors little joke. He’d have to remember to tell her the few cowboy jokes he knew.

With the professor starting the lesson, Ewan sat up attentively now, ready to obviously make an effort for this professor who made an effort to joke with him. With his quill jotting down notes as the professor talked, he briefly noted that this was yet another object that put you in a certain box or house. He found it strange that the school really wanted to label you or just place you in a box as if your personality is something that’s fixed. Making a small note to ask the professor on this when she came around, he grabbed one of the sheets that were floating around the class.

Ewan smiled as he read his traits according to John Wayne’s boot ‘spontaneous, flexible, quiet, sensitive?' Jheeze this thing was pretty spot on, he thought as he continued to listen. So he had to pick a few of these traits and write a sentence on them and theeeeeeen pick a rune that sort of means the same thing? Sure, he could do that.

Jotting down three words first, he then proceeded to write down a phrase that describes each of the traits before finally looking in his runeset to describe them. Briefly, he looked around the room to see how everyone else was doing before he continued his own work, oblivious to thee hustle and bustle around him.

Quote:
Sensitive: attentive to the feelings of others - Eihwas (Dependability and trustworthiness, defence and protection)

Spontaneous: Loves to live in the moment - Raidho (Travel, both in physical and lifestyle direction)

Hands-on: Get’s stuck into anything that interests them - Fehu? (Possessions won or earned)
Slightly unsure on the last one, Ewan looked around to the person next to him ”Uhh...Can you check the last one? Do you think it looks right?”.

Daisy was now busy concentrating on deciphering the results of her "sole-searching" via the handout, her runes and runes textbook. She softly sighed as she determined which rune matched her more dominant personality traits. After what seemed like an eternity to her, Daisy began to write.

I chose three characteristics that can be both positive and negative. These characteristics may appear to be the exact same trait to many people but to me, I think they're individual. I have also named the rune that I feel suits the trait best.

1. Trait: Caring (Rune: Ingwaz) - I have always been a caring person and maybe that is why I have a vast interest in becoming a Healer. I think it is good to be there for others but unfortunately, it has done me wrong at times. I have allowed myself to come into danger and I nearly lost myself for it.

2. Trait: Factual (Rune: Ansuz) - I feel that withholding the truth from someone isn't the right thing to do. It can lead to many problems which could be detrimental. However, that might be deemed as being blunt which I can be when I am having a bad day. I am not Miss Sunshine all the time, sadly.

3. Trait: Devoted (Rune: Eihwaz) - This trait has caused me to act two different ways at times. Most of the time, I am devoted in a positive sense where I am there for others, devoted to my studies etc. However, I have acted in a devoutly negative manner wherein I have ignored loved ones for my own personal gain. I regret that immensely.

1. Dedicated (Rune: Eihwaz)
2. Innovative (Rune: Kenaz)
3. Caring (Rune: Ingwaz)
4. Observant (Rune: Mannaz)
