Default Pathways

A set of paths link the Courtyard to almost every area of the Grounds. Walking upon these stone covered paths, lined with all sorts of trees is a lovely way to clear your mind after a long day of classes. This is a quiet area of the Grounds with the soft sound of leaves rustling in the wind or lightly crunching below your feet. Doesn't the air just seem fresher around here somehow?

Take a walk with a friend, find an unoccupied bench to read a book, climb one of the many trees, smell the roses or play hide and seek in the thick vegetation. Be sure not to trample any of the flowers unless you personally want to hurt the Groundskeeper's feelings.

Kassie stood stone still on the paths. It had been more years than she cared to mention since she had stepped foot on the grounds of her youth. The memories flooded her mind at an almost dizzying rate and she had to pause her forward movement in hopes the past would catch up to the present. Each new sight and sound around her sparked another memory, sending a ripple of mild panic coursing through her body as she was further thrust into the depths of her mind. The experience wasn't new to her, but she wasn't used to the visions being about her own life.

Much to her relief, the deluge of scenes of her past began to slow down, then eventually faded away. Her eyes refocused on her surroundings and she took a deep, cleansing breath before slowly continuing down the path.

Default Finding a Flat Rock and Stick for Astronomy
Stealthy Ninja Queen | Snake For Life | waddling baker | binge royalty ♚

Patrick avoided the forbidden Forrest when it came to finding a flat rock and a long stick for Astronomy. He was still saying the items he needed in his head over and over. Like that old muggle movie his parents loved.... Shrek! Blue flower red thorns, blue flower red thorns It made him laugh as he finally found a flat rock he could use.

He kept walking down the pathways looking for a long stick. After walking further in he found a long stick next to a tree. “That’ll work.” grabbing the stick quickly he noticed the Divination professor. “Hello Professor. Sorry to run, but Astronomy class.” He didn’t want to ignore her and have her think him rude. No no that would never do for a Captain. He was not going to do that. After greeting her he turned and hustled back to the gathering of people.

The lake had been the place to find the rock, and the pathways, with all the trees, was sure to be the place with all the sticks. This part was probably going to be easier, as there was bound to be less confusion as to what would count as a good ingredient for the sundial. A fairly long stick, Kennedy had said. Well... how long was long? Arm's length? Leg's length? As long as Abra was tall?

... Probably arm's length was a safe bet. Abra was only guessing here, but as they were studying sundials, he could pretty much guess that the stick was going to be casting a shadow, so it only really needed to be long enough to do that. Arm's length should suffice.

Now, Abra didn't want to go too far into the pathways; he had always been a bit jumpy about going around the school and grounds on his own since first year, and then the pathways was the scene of the incident he'd been involved in with the Inferi a couple of terms back so he was especially 'nope' about going back there alone. But it was alright, because in the end he didn't even have to go looking too far. As suspected, there were plenty of sticks on the ground to choose from on the way in, all of decent length.

Abra supposed he could have taken his time to really pick the perfect one, but that would involve hanging around here, and he wasn't exactly fond of the idea. So, in the end, he just picked up the first stick he clapped eyes on, turned tail, and speedwalked awaaaaay from the pathways, right on back to the lesson area by the lake.

A stick and a rock. Rylee knew the best place to find those two things for Astronomy would be the forest but that was forbidden and for good reason too. So the very next best place would be along the Pathways. With as many times as she walked along these paths and taken a morning run this way she knew for a fact that she would find one if not both items there.

Blue-gray eyes constantly swept back and forth along the path while she walked. She needed a stick. There was quite a few sticks along the way but what kind of stick was it she needed? A small stick, large stick, thin or a bit wider? Professor Kennedy hadn't really been all that specific on things. Did it even really matter? If they needed a certain type of stick he likely would have told them so. Therefore there was no real reason to fret about it. Whatever stick she came across would have to do.

Stick. Not a good one though. It looked to short as did the next two she came across. Ohhhh! A rock! Nudging it with her shoe proved it wasn't what she was looking for either, much to oval looking and not very flat either. What was that? Something caught her eye and she wandered over to take a better look. Sticking out from under a bush was a pretty nice looking stick as far as nice looking sticks went. Giving it a tug to pull it free from it's home of twigs, dirt and brush she smiled brightly.

Now this was a great one! It was fairly long like the professor had asked for too! Clutching the stick in her hand, Rylee turned around on her heel and headed off to find... a ... rock.

Jade wandered over to the pathways in order to complete her task - to find a rock and a stick!

There were plenty of rocks and sticks here. There were also some lovely trees and flowers around, and all the first year wanted at the moment was to plop down near a tree and relax. But no, she had to focus on the mission at hand. She could always come back here to hang out with a friend during the weekend.

The long stick was easy enough to find, since there were twigs lying around everywhere. Jade picked one up near a tall tree and examined it closely. Hmm, it sure seemed sturdy enough to be part of what was to be a PERFECT sundial. The large flat rock was more difficult to find, as most of the stones here were small and not suitable for the project. However, after some careful inspection, she managed to spot a round, flat rock, hidden beneath some obscure plants. Knowing that she would not be able to carry anything larger and heavier than this, she picked the big rock up with both hands and scurried back to class.

Tina's search of the lake area had been more successful than she expected, but she still needed a few more materials. A design for her sundial was already taking shape in her mind. She approached the pathways, walking with a sense of purpose. She knew exactly what she was looking for! Her dark eyes swept over the area and landed on a small pile of fallen leaves. Those would make nice hour lines! Tina bent and picked up several leaves and some blazes of grass too, depositing them in her bag.

While she was bent, she noticed an acorn cap laying on the ground. That gave her an idea! Now if only she could find three more of them... She looked around for more acorn caps, eventually finding some underneath a nearby oak tree. Into the bag they went! Now all she needed was a long stick, but exactly how long was it supposed to be? Kennedy didn't say...

Looked like she'd just have to guess and hope for the best! Tina decided the best strategy was to find a stick a bit longer than what she thought she'd need; she could always break it into a shorter piece if she needed to. So far, she'd only seen several twigs and a few sticks about a foot long or less, probably too short to use. There was a large tree branch that was crooked and forked in the middle; that was no good either. She spied a few more stick a little farther up the path and wandered closer to get a good look. Here was one that looked promising! It was a sturdy, straight stick about 3/4 the length of her arm. Tina picked it up, but she didn't put it in her bag so as not to accidentally break it. Carrying the stick in her hand, she turned and started back to class.

The walk from the Lake to the Pathways wasn't really long but it felt longer than necessary. Really, he was just following some older kids who were also walking in the same direction and who, he assumed, were also collecting rocks and sticks for the lesson. Some of them had rocks on them and he..... started comparing. Naturally.

UH. Was his rock too small??

Lucas bit his lip as he looked down at the rock in his arm. It didn't LOOK small to him but some others had huge rocks with them and he..... didn't know now. Maybe he should search again? Did he have time to do that?

No. No no, he had a stick to find first and then after that.... maybe. Maybe. He tried to focus on the path in front of him, bending down to look at the sticks near the edges and under some trees. But the only thing his eyes were picking up on was grass and mud and some bugs that were crawling away to safety. Was he too late? Did everyone take some alrea-

THERE! Right there!

Lucas shuffled over and picked up the- ..... oh. Hmm. It was a stick alright but it was a bit.... long, wasn't it? He eyed it carefully, and then at the ground around him, and then at the stick again. Yeah, maybe this would have to do. What other choice did he have? None.

Or none he wanted to look for because he was very nearly late.

Making his decision, he readjusted his grip on the rock and held the stick out in front of him like a sword and started walking as quickly as possible back to the lesson.

For a school this big and supposedly so friendly, Caolan felt lonelier than ever. At his old school he had a ton of friends and regularly hung out with them after school hours. Here he had only made a few acquaintances and a couple of mates in his own house who he saw occasionally. Everyone else had formed such strong bonds with one another that he found it hard to infiltrate into any friendship groups and often found himself sitting in the Common Room or wandering about alone in the grounds.

He was doing the latter today and had decided after a brief jog to take a seat on a bench that was halfway down a pathway near to the lake. The weather was obviously cold it being close to winter and he had a thick jacket on to keep him warm as he watched the world go by. Thankfully it wasn’t raining too or else his thinking session would be decidedly wetter. Not that he wasn’t used to this weather as it was very similar to what he experienced at home and he was often outside there a lot too helping his Ma out on the farm or showing his sisters the difference between the magical plants or playing a game of football with his friends in the local park.

The after-school curriculum was kinda boring at Hogwarts. He’d heard of a few clubs that you could join and he had decided not to join Quidditch for the fact that he considered himself not experienced enough to play but the fact that you couldn’t just leave the school and visit a local town was just so foreign to him. He missed home and he really didn’t think that he would much.

Sigh.

Fourth year was really turning out to be much more miserable than Gunnar thought it would be. And when thoughts turned towards those of the angsty variety, the nearly fifteen year old often did what he thought would help - run. Sure, some might say he was literally running from his problems, but it went a long way towards clearing his head, at least for the time being.

And as such, he found himself running today. Alone, though he had passed a lone figure during his run, the same person he thought he saw sitting on a bench once he was finished and was headed back towards the castle.

"Mind if I sit?" he asked as he approached, needing a bit of a rest and a drink of water after that workout. But he took a seat at the opposite end without really waiting for a response as it had been a courtesy ask. Not that he thought most people would mind anyway, and he pulled out his water bottle for a drink.

The thing with this school was that the loud, obnoxious, brash people seemed to be the most popular kids and the ones that were quieter or shyer or well-behaved were the ones left on the outside and that just didn’t seem right. Caolan wasn’t quiet nor shy, he was confident and friendly and talkative but he felt pretty invisible at times in this school. The lessons were evidence of that and to be honest he just didn’t get it.

He didn’t want to have to get into trouble or shout to be heard.

He sighed inwardly.

Caolan was still deep in thought when he felt someone approaching the space around him. His eyes moved from the patch of grace that he was nonchalantly staring at up to the disembodied voice. A small smile graced his lips. “Yeah, of course mate” he replied. He would’ve indicated to the empty space next to him but the guy sat down anyway. “You been for a run too?” It didn’t surprise him. With a lack of gym and the only sport being flying the only other form of exercise they could get was running around the grounds and they were a pretty spectacular place to jog around too. Ireland was beautiful and green but the landscape was nothing like this was.

Alright, cool. Gunnar didn't think it'd be an issue, but he was glad that the other boy seemed friendly enough about it. Still catching his breath, he gave him a nod as he took a long drink from his water bottle. It might be cold outside, but he was rather warm from the workout he just had.

"Yeah... I thought I saw you out by the lake." He ran a hand through his hair as he turned to glance at him. "I usually go first thing in the morning, but... I didn't wake up early enough today," he added with a chuckle. Sometimes sleep was more important, and it was hard to get out of a warm, cozy bed on a cold morning.

"I don't think I've seen you around," he said after looking at him a moment. Whether that meant the other boy was new here or if they just hadn't crossed paths before. "I'm Gunnar."

Caolan pulled his jacket around himself tighter as a cold wind blew through the valley that Hogwarts sat in. Scotland was cold, not much colder than home but it seemed to make all the difference and it wasn’t even technically winter quite yet. Still he loved being outside and no amount of cold weather was going to keep him cooped up in the Common Room for a second day running. It was nice in there but this was the view that he was growing to love.

The guy joined him and he leaned back on the bench to admire the view. Caolan clearly wasn’t as observant as the other boy. Whilst on a run he concentrated on himself and the ground in front of him, take his eye off the ball and he’d probably trip up. “I found it difficult to get out of bed this morning too” he chuckled. Mostly because his bed was warm and inviting and despite how much he actually enjoyed exercise he really wasn’t in the mood this morning. “Managed to drag my butt out eventually though.” Hence why he was now there.

There it was..

It was pretty much the first thing anyone mentioned when they spoke to him. He was the new kid and he’d probably keep that title until the next ‘new’ kid came about. “Its my first year here” he wrinkled his nose slightly. But he probably knew that already and everything. “Caolan” he stated simply with a nod.

Gunnar was finally starting to catch his breath and he let the other boy talk while he sat by quietly and took a few more sips of his water. This was just what he needed on this brisk autumn day. It was invigorating.

It was good to know that the other boy actually was the person he passed as he ran, otherwise that might be slightly embarrassing. And it was good to know another runner. He had a few running buddies, but it might not hurt to know another. "That seems to be the way, especially when it gets cold," he added with a light laugh. "Are you a regular runner?"

Right. He thought so. Gunnar wasn't always observant, but he didn't ever remember seeing who he now knew to be called Caolan in the past few years he had been at this school. So new would make the most sense. He didn't miss the nose wrinkle though, and he wondered what that implied. "Yeah? Where'd you come from?" Seemed like they had a handful of transfers every year. "Liking it here so far?"

The sixteen year olds attention was drawn away from the ground in front of his feet where he had found himself staring at over to the kid that had joined him. He seemed harmless enough and Caolan was the sort that actually enjoyed some company most of the time. In fact one of his biggest dislikes was loneliness. He offered him a warm smile- not a big goofy grin but one of those ‘I’m friendly and harmless’ sort of smiles.

Caolan wouldn’t call himself an avid runner mostly because he was only doing it in order to stay active. But he did enjoy a morning stroll when he could muster up enough energy and motivation to get out from under his nice warm duvet. “I’m trying to be. I used to play a lot of sports back at my old school so I’m trying to stay fit.” And the food at this school was so good sometimes it was hard to keep yourself from going astray. “Other than playing Quidditch there’s not really much else you can do here sports wise.” Quidditch wasn’t his thing, at least it didn’t seem like it yet. Perhaps it would be something that gained his interests more as the year progressed but so far he had no inclination to try out for the team. He eagerly attended flying lessons though, he was certainly keen to learn to fly well at least.

“I’m from Northern Ireland” The north part was very important. “This is the first time I’ve lived away from home” As in away from Northern Ireland but technically it was the first time he was away from his Ma and little sisters too. He hadn’t felt too homesick but he did worry about how his Ma was going to cope with them by herself. As for enjoying being there that was a difficult question to answer. “It’s alright. Some things I’m loving but I think it’s quite easy to feel a bit..” Isolated? Invisible? ..overshadowed I guess.. Y’know? Big school, loud kids. Being sixteen and a new guy kinda difficult sometimes.” Why he was opening up to this kid he barely knew he wasn’t sure but Gunnar seemed pretty cool anyway.

Gunnar returned the other boy's smile and nodded a bit as he listened. He liked sports enough himself that he felt like he could relate. Though he had to wonder what sports Caolan played at his old school if not Quidditch. He was right in saying that there wasn't much more than Quidditch here, at least not in the way of physical activity.

"Ever think about trying out for Quidditch?" He could understand if he was new, he might not want to jump right into playing here. Gunnar hadn't played his first year here either. "There's also the Health and Wellness Group though," he added. "You might like to join since you're into sports." Not that they played organized sports like that, but it was good physical activity and fun.

Northern Ireland, right. Gunnar supposed he heard the accent, especially now that he had mentioned where he was from. "I'm from Germany," he offered in response, even if it wasn't really relevant right now. "Were you homeschooled then?" Maybe that would make it harder to leave home, but he remembered what he felt like his first year, especially without Chloe here. He nodded in understanding. "Yeah, I get that... everyone already sort of knows each other. But there are a lot of cool people here too. It just takes some time to adjust being here. I was pretty homesick my first year," he admitted.

Yeah Caolan had THOUGHT about playing Quidditch but never thought he’d act on those thoughts. The kids on the team seemed really good and although he would definitely suit playing the sport, especially as a beater with his Cricket playing background, he wasn’t confident enough in his flying ability quite yet to go for it. “Maybe. There’s always next year..” Which was true. As for the Health and Wellbeing group? That kinda sounded both good and boring. “What’s that about?” Was it like doing yoga at stupid o’clock in the morning and eating fruit salad? Because that didn’t sound like something he’d enjoy.

The sixteen year-old had barely been abroad to visit other countries. Whilst his Da was still alive the family would go on holiday to the South of France most years but they hadn’t been since the accident. They had been down to Cornwall a couple of times but other than that Caolan didn’t really go on holiday for they were always busy on the farm. He had however always been interested in travelling around Europe and Germany was one of the countries on his list. “That’s cool” he replied.

“No I went to a Muggle School” And he actually really enjoyed it. “Ma is a muggle so it was just easier on us as a family if I went to a school nearby” He didn’t really want to get into right now. Maybe later.

“I guess it will just take a bit of time.” He wasn’t giving up just yet.

The cold did not bother Alice anymore than the heat did. It did not matter the weather, to her anytime (except night and right after eating) was good for exercise - and exercise was exactly what the history of magic professor was doing that day as she jobbed down the pathways towards the lake - wearing a sleek black jacket to protect against cold.

She came to a stop as she approached a bench with two schoolboys talking to each other on it. "Are you two alright?," she said, looking at them as if expecting to see their faces turn blue. "You really shouldn't be sitting in one spot for two long in weather like this. At least move up and down to allow blood to circulate."

Being a fitness fanatic, one would have been correct in guessing that mandatory workouts was the only thing Alice missed from Julian's reign of terror. Well, maybe now was a good time to bring a little bit of that back, or so she thought.

"Pick an exercise," she ordered, her voice making it clear that it WAS an order. "Or if you want, we can jog around a few times instead."

"Pick an exercise," she ordered, her voice making it clear that it WAS an order. "Or if you want, we can jog around a few times instead."
Gunnar nodded. Even if he was interested in quidditch at all, it was still a prudent decision to at least wait it out a year. But he was unlikely to get much in the way of physical activity otherwise unless he took that initiative. "It's kind of like a club," he shrugged as he explained the Health and Wellness Group. "Sometimes we do fun things like obstacle courses or games, but sometimes it's just learning about healthy eating." It was a toss-up really, but it was an alright time for the most part.

Oh, a Muggle school.... but till just now? "I went to a Muggle primary school before I came here," he responded in kind, though he was eleven which felt like a big difference until now. But he didn't press him for information because it felt a little personal. If he wanted to tell him though, he could make that decision on his own.

And he was just about to say something more when they were interrupted by a voice. The voice of his least favorite teacher.

"We're fine, professor," he said with a small smile, keeping a light and pleasant tone. He might not be fond of her as a teacher, but he wasn't and wouldn't be disrespectful. But her tone. Was she ordering them to exercise?

Gunnar gave her a curious sort of look with his eyebrow raised. Old habits died hard, he'd suppose. But he also supposed that he shouldn't be surprised considering how she was last year with the excessive rules. "We actually just finished a run around the lake. We just sat down to take a rest." So, no, they didn't need another jog, and exercise was no longer mandatory at someone's barked order.

The Health and Wellbeing club or whatever it was called sounded a bit like his theory PE lessons or PSHE had been like in school. They weren’t his favourite but they were kinda useful in the long run. “I’ll think about that” It would be a good place to get to know other likeminded kids too and if they did exercise sometimes then it didn’t sound too bad at all.

“Are you a Muggleborn then?” he asked his classmate. He assumed that pure bloods would attend some form of Wizarding primary rather than slumming it out at a muggle one. That being said Caolan loved his old school and he wished that somehow he could integrate the two.

There was nothing worse than when a conversation was interrupted by somebody else. It tipped the scale when it was a Professor and they were barking orders at you. For a start it was not school time and they were perfectly allowed to do whatever they wanted to do as long as it was within reason and not breaking any school rules. If that was to sit outside in the cold RECOVERING from a run then that was what they were going to do and nothing Mrs Bossy over here could say would change that.

His smile turned into a frown as he looked between her and Gunnar. “As you probably know the cold helps to reduce inflammation and recover your muscles after exercise.” So ACTUALLY they were helping their bodies by sitting here in the cold and there was nothing she could say that could argue with that.

Wait, were these two students actually disobeying her? It certainly seemed like it - but perhaps they just weren't aware that she was actually giving an order. They were both acting rather polite, so that was what she was going to assume was happening.

"Well I'm glad to hear that you were exercising previously, Mr. McCarthy, but I do believe you've been breaking here longer than you should. You too, Mr. Wilson. Were you not having a pleasant conversation as I approached?" And she DID hear them, so she knew they were. Breaks in between exercises should be short enough to allow you to catch your breath and no longer than that, at least in her opinion.

She examined them to see if she could catch any shivering. She couldn't, but she decided to pretend that she did. "Why Mr. Wilson, you're even shivering!"
Did she have the authority to order them to exercise? Perhaps not (though she did have that authority last year), but she was determined to get them to exercise, even if just a little.

No, he wasn't Muggleborn, but Gunnar didn't have the chance to explain the connection to Caolan or say anything about why his parents thought he should go to the school that he and his siblings had. All thoughts of his earlier conversation had more or less disappeared once the History of Magic professor accosted them from out of nowhere.

He glanced at the other boy when he gave O'Hara very sound information about muscle recovery and he nodded his agreement. But honestly? Why did they need to justify why they were sitting on a bench and having a conversation? This was nothing short of ridiculous.

"We were, but what of it?" He responded curiously to her question of their conversation on the bench. They might have been talking for a few minutes, but she also had no idea how long either of them were running before then. They were allowed to sit here if they wanted. "No disrespect meant professor, but I wasn't aware there was a time limit for sitting on this bench, and as far as I know we aren't breaking any rules." So he wasn't about to jump up just because she said so and she could go pester someone else who was actually breaking the rules. Why'd she have to pick on them anyway?

Wait... was Caolan shivering? Gunnar knitted his eyebrows together as he turned to look at the other boy when the woman made that "observation." He clearly wasn't and he hadn't noticed anything like that while he was sitting here. Why would she lie about that? Teachers weren't supposed to do that and he wasn't quite sure what to make of it.

Stella needed some fresh air, being cooped up in the castle wasn't fun nor was she the one to stay inside on a nice winter. Perhaps walking down the path ways would be nice, she needs some nice fresh air. Walking out of the Gryffindor common room she itched her arm once again before heading towards the Pathways for some much needed fresh air. Skipping happily down the path she smiled happily at her bundled up from head to toe making sure she wouldn't get cold, but she loved the winter time it was her favorite. Maybe she'll even read a book down here, ah... to get some fresh air was so nice and lovely.

Although reading didn't sound like a bad idea, now that she thought about it. Taking her wand out she melted the snow and dried one of the benches before she sat down taking her book out of her bag. Opening her book she started reading her book as she itched her arm as she kept on reading. Ah... she just loved this spot for reading it was one of her favorite places in all of Hogwarts grounds.

Joyce was also in dire need of some fresh air. The castle was stuffy and loud and Healer Adara needed to do something fast because it seemed there was a bad case of lice doing the rounds. Nasty business. She was safer outside.

There was a particular bench that she was particularly rather fond of, and Joyce found herself making a beeline straight for it. As she got closer however, she realised it seemed someone else had already beaten her to it and while she was happy to see a student taking the time to brush up on some reading outside of class hours, she was LESS than happy to see the tell-tale sign of more of the itchy-scratchy business.

"Miss Starson,"
she scowled when she was within range of the girl. "Enough scratching you'll give yourself a nasty rash."

Upon hearing her last name her head shot up seeing the Transfigurations Professor before her. At the mention of scratching she looked at her confused. "Scratching, I..I was? I wasn't even aware I was doing so Professor. " she said frowning itching her neck. She has been feeling tingly lately, but thought nothing of it, thought maybe it was the warming spells around the castle or so. "W....what's going on Professor?" she asked her confused by all of this.

Honestly she didn't know she was scratching so much, she thought she was fine honestly, but Professor Darlington was telling her differently. 'Maybe I should go to the hospital wing and see what's going on, although I don't feel bad or anything. " she said shrugging. She honestly felt fine, but she did see quite a bit of people itching themselves as well, maybe they just all gotten into something.
