Default The Hot Springs

Banner credit: Suziella

Spent too long watching the northern lights in the Igloo? Starting to feel your toes go numb? Not to worry, next to the Igloo are the Hot Springs. There's no need to travel to Iceland to visit the famous Blue Lagoon anymore since Mr. Baldvinsson has brought some of that magic to Hogwarts.

Its vivid, translucent blue water is at just the right temperature for your muscles to relax and for your toes to regain their former color. This mineral-rich water will cleanse your skin and your mind from all thoughts of OWLs and NEWTs.

Not a big fan of the rotten egg smell? The Groundskeeper would like to state that the smell of sulphur is authentic but to avoid complaints from the students (and the staff): Mr. Baldvinsson has agreed to conceal the sulphur fumes.

This is a place to relax. Too much water splashing, running around or yelling will result in a grumpy Groundskeeper. Best to check if he's around before starting that water fight. Also; swimwear is required.

Default Anyone feel free to grab her!

What better way to soak some sore muscles than to pop down to the hot springs? Penny had made a habit of coming here since the new Headmaster had implemented morning laps. She would never speak ill of an adult... or speak with disrespect toward one so she had just been keeping her mouth shut and her blisters treated. Her mum had sent her some potion to help with it, but that wasn't her only ailment of late.

Aside from having to climb the stairs for the upper level classrooms, Penny really had it pretty easy given the location of the common room and the classes she had to get to. Not like the poor Ravenclaws and Gryffindors. They really had it rough right now. Thank Merlin for small favours, she guessed. All of that was currently moving to the back of her mind though as she kicked off her shoes and plopped onto the dock. Her feet immediately were shifted to the hot, therapeutic waters, causing a sigh to escape her. She'd just soak her footsies for now, though. She'd fully emerge later.

It was the beginning of Benji's third year at Hogwarts, and things were... well... interesting, to say the least. Headmistress gone, new (kind of scary, although he would never admit that aloud) Headmaster who made them run every morning, new Divination professor who seemed to be, like, weirdly supportive of this new Headmaster... He wasn't quite sure what to think about any of it yet. He wasn't really shy, per se, but he was definitely introverted. Being an only child, he had gotten used to having lots of alone time at home. Every time he came back to Hogwarts after being away for the summer, it took a lot of readjustment. At home, it was just him and his parents, who mostly left him alone. At Hogwarts, there were constantly people around, usually yelling (especially the Gryffindors), never any peace and quiet for him to just BE. It was a little frustrating, especially now that his prior years' coping mechanism had been essentially ruined.

For the past two years, Benji had gone for a run whenever he needed time to just think. He loved running. He had always been an athletic kid and had grown up playing Muggle sports, and he found a lot of comfort in pushing his body while clearing his mind. But, ya know, now that it was mandated every morning, the idea of doing it again on his own time was not super appealing.

He was realizing that his shoes were getting a little tight, which he hadn't noticed until he had developed a blister on his right heel, and his feet started to cramp a little. SO. He needed to think, and his feet hurt, which led him directly to the hot springs today. He was usually pretty good at predicting when it would be empty and was looking forward to just chilling (or... warming?) there by himself for a while and mulling over all of the new stuff happening at Hogwarts while soaking his poor feet.

BUT. What was this? A... girl? In his hot springs? "Oh," he said in surprise, without really meaning to speak out loud. Drat. If he left now, he'd look like a jerk. And he wasn't a jerk. (Just an introvert who desperately wanted to be alone.) He supposed being around one person wasn't so bad. Definitely not as bad as being around every single Ravenclaw milling about the common room, anyway. But still, he had really been looking forward to just being by himself. He stood motionless for a beat, still trying to decide if it was worth it to stick around or if he should risk looking rude and go try to find some isolation in the library. Although the library wouldn't help his foot problems...

Hanna, who had been practicing her dancing and stretching, needed a soak in the Hot Springs, where her skin could soak in some of those minerals. Particularly magnesium, which she'd get at home from the Epsom Salt packet. Here, she'd just jump into the already-enriched water. But, of course, she wouldn't jump.

She had her favourite bathers on, and her large fluffy towel with pompoms on the edges. She took her outer-robe off, folded it neatly, and slid into the springs.

Dizzy yawned, trudging her way down the path to the amazingly faithful recreation of the hot springs in Reykjavik, which was, to her at this moment, one of the few saving points of this term so far. She'd been to the real Blue Lagoon a few times with her Mum, and it was one of her favorite places on the planet, even when it was insanely crowded.

Imagine her delight upon learning that there was a version of it right here at Hogwarts. And that it was rarely packed with people.

The lack of rotten egg-esque smell had taken her a bit of time to adjust to, but was also quite a bit more pleasant.

Yawning again, Dizzy finally cleared the path and stumbled her way to the lagoon. She grinned a wide, happy, and yet tired, grin when she noticed she wasn't alone. "Hey, Hanna! How's the water?" It was a rhetorical question of course, because the answer would always be amazing.

She stripped off her oversized t-shirt that was covering her swimsuit underneath and placed it off to the side, with her own folded up towel on top. With a stretch, Dizzy slipped quietly into the water, which folded over her like the warmest snuggliest blanket on the planet. Merlin, she was tired.

"How are you holding up?" she asked.

Deep in relaxing meditation, Hanna was almost startled to hear a voice. She opened her eyes and spun around to see Dizzy! "Hey!" Hanna said happily. She had really been enjoying her quiet time, but company was very welcome. "It's perfect," she said, in the most relaxed tone she had ever had. It was here that she could truly forget the things that were bothering her. She relaxed back into her previous position.

"Ah pretty good. Nothing's bad yet. Work wise, of course." And then she sat back up again. "Look, this whole thing with the Headmaster... it's completely crazy. Hawthorne was awesome, and I can't believe she's gone." Of course she wasn't DEAD gone, just... absent gone. But Hanna really hoped something bad would happen so that she could come back. "How are you holding up?"

At the sound of another person's voice, Penny started just a bit. She should have known that there was NO WAY she could get a moment of alone time around here. It was just too good to be true. Luckily, it was not like she hated others or anything... she just felt like soaking a bit and enjoying some quiet reflection.

Turning toward the boy's voice she smiled shyly. "Hey there... you can... um... sit if you want," she offered, stuttering her words a bit. Just out of awkwardness, that is. Being painfully shy typically meant a lot of stumbling... both her words and over her own feet. And as she thought about her feet, the girl kicked them ever so slightly in the water, causing ripples to go out across the hot spring. It always made her smile, ya know. "Is this... like.... erm... your quiet place or sommat?" she asked just out of curiosity. May as well make some conversation while he stood there awkwardly and she sat there much the same.

Welp, he'd been spotted. No turning back now. May as well do what he came for, then. Slipping off his shoes and socks, Benji walked over and dropped down into the spot the girl had indicated he could sit in. She seemed nice, he thought. Maybe shy. Definitely a little awkward, but he wasn't feeling the most debonair himself, so awkward was fine with him. And anyway, it meant she probably wouldn't be yelling anytime soon, which was really the only thing he couldn't deal with at the moment. So. If there had to be someone around, at least it was a someone who didn't seem horrible and loud.

He was cuffing his pants and deciding that this interaction would probably be okay when she splashed her feet a bit and asked him a question, snapping him back into reality. "Well, kind of," he answered, dipping his own feet into the water and kicking them a bit. "More like a back-up quiet place, really. I used to go for a run when I needed to think, but... You know..." he shrugged. "Not so fun anymore."

A couple of other people had trickled in. It seemed like fate didn't want him to be alone here no matter what. He figured he couldn't go against his destiny, so he continued the conversation with this girl whose name he realized he didn't even know.

"Is this your quiet place? There aren't many spots around Hogwarts to be truly alone. Always someone milling about and yelling or throwing something or casting ill-advised jinxes... you know, even suits of armor or paintings watching you. Those paintings get right annoying, actually, prying into your business... Oh! I'm Benji," he said, the introduction an afterthought to his complaining, and smiled in her direction.

Penny wasn't really paying much mind to what the boy was doing, but when he sat down net to her she NOTICED. How could she not? It wasn't often that boys were in her orbit, after all. Kicking her feet, she glanced at him as he spoke. His voice was somewhat soothing, oddly enough. Where had this guy been hiding?

"It has become tha' since tha start of term, yeah. I figured wha' better place to come and soak me bones after running laps, ya know?" she said quietly a shrug rolling off of her shoulders. It was the truth, but what she did not elaborate on was that it had definitely become a safe haven for her, her quiet place. "Ye, this place is right bonkers more oft than not. It is nice when you can find... a place to relax and just get away from all the madness," she said with a small smile at him.

Wow. This guy was super easy to talk to! It made Penny feel less awkward and nervous, which was a feat in and of itself. "I'm Penny. It's grand to meet ya, Benji!" she said with the utmost sincerity. Perhaps she had even made a new friend. How amazing was THAT?!

"It's grand to meet you, too, Penny," Benji echoed with a grin. He had already decided that he liked her. She had been welcoming without making him feel like he had to talk to her, but she had been nice enough that he actually wanted to. That was a miracle given his overwhelming desire for solitude just moments before. He couldn't quite place her accent, but he was having fun mentally trying. He would have to ask her once he'd formulated a theory. It made his accent seem lame, anyway. Just regular, boring, posh, blah. Hers was interesting.

"I don't really mind the running, but... I know some people do," he said carefully. He would never dream of making his distaste for the new headmaster and Divination professor public knowledge in any way, so he tried to be diplomatic and vague in his comments about them and their policies. "This is a good place to settle down from that, though. My feet are killing me. I think I need new shoes. Or at least to magic mine a little bigger."

He leaned back a bit, stretching his arms behind him and turning his face upward toward the sun, closing his eyes and soaking it in. "So what brought you out here today? Just the post-run blues?"

THe Hufflepuff couldn't help but smiled wider when he spoke. The posh accent made her sound like a blooming idiot, but she did like the way he said grand. It actually DID sound rather grand with his accent. Oh man. She was almost POSITIVE she had just made a friend. Or at least she had in her own head. She would never have the guts to ask out loud. Hah.

"It hurts me feet, s'all," she explained as she kicked said feet in the hot water again. And she too knew better than to mention how she REALLY felt about the new regime. There was no way she would ever do that where others could so easily overhear her anyway. She had only told her siblings how she felt... and given they were all Hufflepuffs it had been a whispered conversation in their common room in the middle of the night. The Goodman's were no fools. "Me brotha mie be able to help ya with charms on ya shoes if you like!" She would offer to help herself, but she was not a master at much of anything and would hate it if she like caught his shoes on fire or something.

Penny couldn't help but to watch him from the corner of her eye as he shifted and turned his face toward the sun. Wow. He has great bone structure. But his question... it made her chew the inside of her cheek as she contemplated how best to answer him. "I uh... people make me nervous after while. I mean... loads'a people... all of it gives me anxiety sometime. And well... it got kind of ba' today so I came down here to soak me feet and get away from the millions of people in the castle," she explained before quickly adding, "But I don't mind just like... one person around!"

Listening to Penny speaking and splashing her feet a bit, Benji felt he could relax a bit more. Something gave him the feeling that she was like him -- she didn't approve of the new commander-in-chief of Hogwarts or his flunky in Divination, but she wouldn't say so. He was grateful for that. He had been worried that it would be just his luck that the first person he ran into this term would be one of the loudmouthed, sassy students who had already gotten detention or something. Thank Merlin that wasn't the case. It seemed that he and Penny were both smarter than that. When she said it hurt her feet, he nodded with a slight smile and hoped that was enough for her to gather that he felt similarly about the whole situation.

"You have a brother here, then?" he asked, peeking one eye open to look at her and realizing she was already looking at him. Her gaze took him by surprise, but the nice kind of surprise. He wasn't really used to being looked at. Still, he kept his face as neutral as possible. "Must be kind of nice..." he mumbled, closing both eyes again. He loved being an only child, don't get him wrong... But still, he'd always wondered what it must be like to have siblings. Someone automatically in your corner, who has your back, who is like a built-in friend. Well, if you had good siblings, anyway.

He listened to her answer his question about why she'd come out to the hot springs today. Both eyes popped open once more when she mentioned that people gave her anxiety. Uh-oh. Was she hinting that he should leave? He definitely didn't want to make her anxious! But then she quickly added that just one person was okay. "Ah... I'm glad. I don't particularly feel like trudging back up the stairs to my common room quite yet," he smiled, leaning forward to put his elbows on his knees and chin in his hands. "That must be really difficult to deal with at Hogwarts. There are so many people." He was careful not to ask a question. He didn't want to make her feel like she had to say anything she didn't want to. He knew it could be a sensitive subject.

"People don't make me anxious, but they do irritate me sometimes," he smiled again. "Mostly it's just a bit overwhelming. I'm used to being alone more often than not, and it's really hard to do that here."

The whole situation right now; sitting here with him and in the peace and quiet Penny definitely felt at ease. And she found that her words were tumbling from her mouth much more freely than normal. Which, oddly, she wasn't bothered by in the slightest. "Aye, I have a brotha and sista here actually. Makes things a bit easier sometime, I reckon," she said with a slight shrug.

And at his next remark she couldn't help but giggle a bit. Something that was very unusual for her, really. "Well you definitely dun haf ta go just yet," she said quietly, her ears and cheeks flushing red as she did. That was, more than likely, the closest thing to flirting she had ever done. How pathetic would he think she was if he could hear all of her thoughts on this? Hah!

"It's no' so ba' anymore, really. I find ways to cope wif it and me mam sends me potions and such when she can. Plus with the lab here, it's easy to make me own, ya see," she added quickly. Because Potions was definitely her best subject by far, after all. "What irritates you most about people here, if ye dun mind me askin," she was always curious about what made others tick.

Benji nodded at Penny's description of her family. He was a little envious. She seemed like she had a good relationship with her siblings, which was nice. He wished he had some siblings to get along with, too. He liked being alone, but sometimes he felt lonely. There was a difference between those two things, after all. "Are they all in Hufflepuff, too? And are you older or younger? Do you get along with them?" He knew Houses tended to run in families -- though not always, of course... And then suddenly he was asking a million questions that he hadn't planned on asking. He just couldn't fathom what it would be like to have siblings, and it seemed so cool. He couldn't help but be curious!

His eyebrows raised in surprise when Penny began to blush furiously, and a smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "Thanks. It's too nice out here to go inside, anyway, so I probably would have just wandered around the grounds sadly somewhere if you'd kicked me to the curb." He wondered what was going through her mind and hoped she wasn't one of those people who blushed when she lied or something. Like maybe she really did want him to leave but just didn't want to hurt his feelings. He didn't think that was the case, but he'd been wrong before. Anyway, he wasn't quite sure what she was thinking, but... Well, he thought he would like to know. To-do list: Get to know Penny... Um... Okay, he didn't know her last name yet, but that could be at the top of the list of things to find out.

He frowned a bit without even realizing he was frowning when she asked why people irritated him. "They're all just so loud and careless," he said. "Always people yelling or breaking rules or... y'know..." he gestured vaguely with his hands, trying to signal that people could be doing any number of things that were annoying. "And the people who are already getting in trouble with the new headmaster and Divination professor," he scoffed. "I mean the people doing it on purpose, I know some students have done things accidentally to get in trouble. I don't mean them. I just don't get it. I've seen some students being outright disrespectful and defiant, especially on that first morning of S.O.R.E. Didn't anyone teach them that adults deserve respect, even if you don't agree with their decisions?" Wow, that was a rant. And had he said too much by mentioning disagreeing? He hadn't said that he disagreed with their decisions... Hopefully that wouldn't be taken the wrong way. He glanced around quickly to see if anyone had heard who might have misinterpreted what he said and would tell on him.

He moved along quickly: [b]"Plus I like solitude. I enjoy being alone. Most of them time, anyway." He looked over at her and smiled, trying to say (without actually saying) that he didn't mind company when that company was her. "My family is just my parents and me, and they're both busy all the time... My mum is a doctor at St. Mungo's and my dad works for the Ministry, so they're not around a lot. They mostly leave me to my own devices. I get so used to being in my own head without anyone around that coming back to Hogwarts is always a big adjustment. I guess I just haven't quite gotten there yet this term, so I still get a little cranky. I have to remind myself that the Gryffindors can't help that they're so obnoxious. It's in their nature." He chuckled at his own joke. He was being serious in that he got very irritated with his rambunctious classmates, but it wasn't anything personal with anybody.

Anyway, enough about him. He felt like he had just talked for ages. He was actually pretty social for being so introverted, but he was a little rusty. It had been a long summer. "It's good that you're able to manage it," he nodded decisively. "I'm not so good at potions... I always follow the instructions as perfectly as I can, but it still seems like it never comes out quite right for some reason." He shrugged. It truthfully didn't bother him much. He passed every test, just not with the highest marks. He could live with that. "Now Divination..." he added. "That is a nightmare." (And not just because of the new professor.) "I'm horrible at it. I can never see what I'm supposed to be seeing!"

If only Benji knew they were poor and she had no idea who her father was, he'd no longer be envious of her family life. Of that she was sure. But when it came to the sibling thing, it was very true she had lucked out. "I'm tha youngest, yeah. And wer all in Hufflepuff," she explained with a grin. She knew she was lucky to have them, even when they gave her hell. "And yeah, we get on real well, really. M'Lucky to hav em." And she would deny that if anyone ever told them she said it. Heh.

And that made her blush moreso than she was to begin with! It was almost as if (GASP) he was flirting back with her. But that was CLEARLY all in her head, right? She was certain of it. "I'd hate ta see ya wanderin' round sad like. I'd not do that to ya," she said with a giggle as she averted her eyes and kicked her feet in the water again. It was true. Even though she had just met him she couldn't imagine turning him away and making him sad. She felt a great sense of calm just sitting around talking to him about life and things. That was something she didn't experience often and she was definitely not going to give that up.

And now as he spoke about all of the mess the new regime had stirred up and the students that were being brats, she simply watched the side of his face and smiled. Of course, the Hufflepuff was in agreement with everything that he was saying. To show that, Penny nodded along as he went. "I know. I agree. It's well mad, all the nonsense the troublesome ones are stirring up. It ain't righ'." She couldn't help but think back to her own experience with the Divination Professor from Hell and the punishment and whatnot that had followed. And SHE hadn't done any of it on purpose. Not like the others had and that was what had made her saddest about the whole situation.

While there was an uncomfortable feeling creeping up in her stomach with all the thoughts and conversation about the start of term... him looking at her and smiling like that, it made her settle down. A goofy type of smile stretched her lips as he spoke. And she definitely was picking up what he was saying without words. Nudging him gently with her shoulder she said, "Thank you. I feel the same way." About the liking solitude most of the time. Right now was definitely not one of those times. "Me mam, brotha, and sista are all we got. Me mam works a couple of jobs to... eh... support us. It's all good though." Not that he had asked her to share that much, but there he had it. BUT OH they were talking about people being loud and obnoxious. Heh. "Me house is always loud. Always. Animals, people," she explained, but added on, which is why I oft'n go climb a tree an read or sommat." Just so he would understand why she sought solitude more often than not.

"I... I could help ye with Potions sometime. If ya like," she said quietly. In fact, the thought of spending more time with him and brewing sounded quite nice. And then he mentioned Divination... oi vey. She couldn't hold in the sigh that escaped her at the mere thought of it. "I got in so much trouble in Divination. And I didn't mean ta. I was tryn to do righ'..." It had resulted in such a mess that it still gave her anxiety. "I decided not to take it anymore this term."

"Hufflepuff... A House full of... What's your last name?" Benji asked Penny, crossing off the top item on the get-to-know-Penny list he was mentally creating. "It sounds like it's nice for all of you to be together," he added. He liked hearing her talk about her life and family. It was so easy for him to get inside his own head that it was good to be reminded now and then that other people had problems and lives, too. He sometimes needed the prompting to not be so self-centered.

"Well, thanks," he laughed. "My sad face is fairly impressive, though. Really brings others down too when they see it, you know? I could start a sadness epidemic here at Hogwarts." (Not that Hogwarts wasn't close to that already...)

ANYWAY. Hey. Uhhh... Waaaaait a second. Could she be--? No, no way. Not flirting. Couldn't be happening. Could it? And was he... flirting with her? WERE THEY FLIRTING? (He was a little slow on the uptake in matters of the heart. Poor boy.) A slightly embarrassed smile -- the kind that makes your parents ask you annoyingly who you're thinking about -- spread across his face involuntarily, and he suddenly found his feet in the water veeeeery fascinating to look at.

As he splashed a bit, eyes still glued to his feet, SHE NUDGED HIM?!?!! Truthfully, he had been mildly panicking about the concept of flirting (specifically whether it applied in this situation) through whatever she had said last, so he wasn't quite sure what they were talking about until she said something about feeling the same. FEELING THE SAME? Oh, wait, about not minding each other's company. Okay. Phew. Yeah. He knew that. Tooootally. His shoulder felt a little tingly. An unexplained phenomenon...

Either way, Benji was glad that Penny didn't seem to mind him being there. Interesting considering the fact that both of them had been seeking solitude when they'd come out here. He wondered vaguely how it had happened that they had settled into a comfortable companionship when they had both set out to be alone, but he decided that the how didn't really matter. Penny was nice and smart and pretty and seemed to be on his wavelength, so he was happy that their paths had crossed.

Coming back to his senses at the description of her loud house, Benji finally braved looking up at her and nodded. "I have a feeling I would be spending a lot of time in trees with books, myself, if I lived there," he said with a smile, finally beginning to relax again. Crisis averted (he thought). Anyway, it was true. He could understand why she wanted to be alone most of the time, then. Sounded chaotic. Very different from his silent, lonely house. Could be fun... for a very little while. He could already sense the overwhelming feeling that much commotion could cause.

"Hey, that would be great!" His face lit up at the mention of her helping him with potions. "Thanks. I really don't know what I do wrong every time..." he trailed off. He wondered if she was any good at Divination, too... Oh. So she was one of those people. The ones he felt bad for, not the ones he thought were stupid. He wasn't quite sure what she had done to get on the professor's bad side -- a lot of people had gotten in trouble for a lot of different things, so he hadn't really noticed specifics -- but he didn't want to ask. Even just mentioning it in passing seemed to upset her. That was the last thing he wanted to do. "Yeah... I probably wouldn't take it either, but I'm trying to keep a well-rounded schedule." He shrugged. That didn't really sound like criticism of Professor Fletcher, did it?

"Goodman. That's me surname," she said with a smile toward him. It was oddly lovely to open up about things to him. And unexpected. "It is. I'd never tell them that, though," she said with a giggle that caused her to snort ever so slightly. Now THAT was mildly embarrassing, but she had the feeling that Benji would not be mentioning it or making her feel awkward. Heh.

And then... she found herself giggling even more as he spoke. GIGGLING. And watching him as he spoke. This was definitely flirting, wasn't it? Surely not. OMG. That grin, though. Penny saw it before he looked away and down to his feet. Something about that smile made her tummy do this little flipping kind of thing. It was odd, but it a very lovely kind of way. Made her feel a bit nervous though. In a good way.

What a day this was turning out to be. In the BEST way. Neither of them had been seeking company, but that was what made this the perfect afternoon, really. The unexpected often made for the best moments and then later, the best stories. What would she tell people about the day she met and really opened up to him? Would it be like some epic tale later down the road? These were the types of things that her brain went to... likely from having read far too many romance novels over the years. Her attention snapped back to the present as he spoke again, causing her cheeks to flush bright red at the line her own thoughts had taken. What a day.

"Erm... well some days it is nice to take part in it. Other days it is not," she said with a sheepish sort of smile, still a bit rattled by her thoughts. But really, who would blame her? He was so nice and funny and good looking. It was beginning to get harder and harder to concentrate, honestly. Merlin help her. OH. MY. GOSH. That smile. The one that lit up his face when she had offered her help. That one. It made her heart do this weird jumping thing. WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH HER BODY?

"I wouldn't mind atall," she explained with a shy sort of smile. The kind that made her sort of shrug nonchalantly and look away. Also the kind that caused her ears to tingle even. "Um... like... so when do ya wanna do that? The working together that is," she added on quickly. Was she being too obvious that she was eager to spend more time with him? Was it desperate to make plans for the next time they were going to hang out well before their first interaction was done? Was this how normal people behaved? Hahahaha.

"Penny Goodman," Benji repeated, saying her name slowly and carefully. "Got a nice ring to it!" He smiled at her again. It seemed like for some reason, he was having a hard time not smiling. What was that about? "The Goodman kids. Those Goodman Hufflepuffs. Puffy Goodmans... Okay, that one's not so great..." he continued, trying out different combinations in a sort of silly voice. "Presenting... THE GOODMANS!" He put on his best Quidditch announcer voice (which was absolute rubbish, really, and made him sound like a huge dork) with a laugh. "But, you know, Penny Goodman is pretty cool all by herself, too." He shrugged in the most nonchalant way he could muster, trying not to make his thoughts too obvious. What he'd just said was the closest he'd ever gotten to confessing his undying love to someone. (Which was a bit sad, actually...)

Maybe he couldn't wipe the grin off his face because of her giggling. The GIGGLING. Yeah, definitely making it hard not to smile. It had to just be contagious laughter. Yeah, yeah, that was what it was. For sure. Maybe it was the adorable way she had snorted a bit when she laughed. It made him laugh, too, but not at her. He just... you know... thought it was sweet. (Sweet? Did he just say sweet? That wasn't even a word he used normally. Where had that come from?)

And then suddenly her face was turning bright red, and she seemed a little shaken with her next sentence. His stomach felt like it did a swan dive off a really high diving board at the sound of her voice, and he was beginning to like the feeling of that freefall. He realized in that moment that he was desperate to know what she had been thinking about, and he began, "What were you..." before thinking twice. He knew that he would feel really awkward if she asked him what he had been thinking about (sweet?!)... So he'd better not ask her that, then. He cleared his throat to try to cover up the fact that he was stalling for something else to say instead. "What were you thinking we might do?" Oh. He attempted to save his words, then realized how strange the thing he'd come up with might sound. It was his turn to flush slightly -- he didn't really blush, but a wee tinge of pink definitely crept onto his face -- and he quickly added, "For potions practice, I mean. What were you thinking our plan would be?" There. That made it definitely not obvious that he'd been about to ask a different question, right?

"Um, well, anytime really. The sooner the better probably. I could really use the help." Or could really use time with her again, was more like it. Benji rubbed the back of his neck nervously, realizing that his palms were clammy. He tried to wipe them on his pants discreetly. What the heck was happening to him?!?! And how could it be true that they had only met earlier that day? It felt like it had been forever. (In the best way.)

The more he went on saying her name, the more she giggled (and subsequently snorted) until it turned into a full on laugh. He was hilarious, he was! And Penny adored him. It was officially official. Especially when he said the last bit. It stopped her laughing and caused her to turn to look at him, head cocked slightly to one side. "You're grand for sayin' that, ye are," she admitted softly. "And you, Benji I don't yet know your Surname, are pretty awesome yourself." And THAT was the closest she had ever come to confessing love, as well. Heh. What a sad pair they were.

And that smile lit up her whole world right now and it was making her smile wider just watching him. Ugh. Why was he so perfect?! Not that she minded that he was seemingly perfect for her. Not at all. It was oddly... calming, really.

"Um... well... we could start with something simple, ya know? Like maybe a calming draught? Or anything really." In case he thought that particular potion wasn't simple... OH GOSH! What if that offended him? That would truly break her heart in two. DRAMA! A small furrow appeared between her eyebrows as she got off in her head about that. "Or ya could tell me what you last brewed and botched and we can start there?" Yeah. That was a nice idea.

And there he went being adorable again! Her brow mellowed out and she found herself chewing on her lip as she tried to hide a triumphant smile. "I quite like that idea, yeah. We could... maybe hang out tomorrow? During free period. And then maybe after that, too?" And that, ladies and gentleman, was the closest she had ever come to asking someone on a date. Pathetic, she was.

Benji grinned widely at being called "grand." He loved the way Penny said that word. (And basically every other word ever too.) "Park," he said. "Is my surname, I mean." Without that context, it sounded like he was ordering her to park a car or go to the park or something. Better clarify. And then she called him AWESOME. "Me, awesome?" he laughed. "All I've done so far is tell you that I'm rubbish at potions! That doesn't sound particularly awesome to me!" He didn't mind poking some fun at himself. Especially because hopefully in the near future, a certain adorable Hufflepuff was going to help him get better at it.

He noticed her smiling bigger, which made him smile bigger, and basically it was just a never-ending cycle of huge smiles. Hey, he wasn't complaining. He couldn't really articulate why it was happening, he just knew that he didn't mind it.

"We can start anywhere you like," he said. "You're the expert!" He could already tell somehow that she would be the best potions professor he'd ever had. (No offense, Noble.) "Truthfully, if I gave you a list of all the potions I'd botched, it would just be a list of every single potion we've ever tried to brew in class. Unfortunate, really. I'm pretty sure I'm cursed." He chuckled, but he was half serious about that, actually. He SWORE he followed every recipe to the letter exactly, but somehow they always went wrong somewhere...

"Yeah!" he agreed with her enthusiastically when she suggested meeting the next day. Had he sounded too overeager? Was she going to think he was sad and pathetic now?! OH NO. He cleared his throat and tried to put on a more even voice: "I mean, yeah, that would be great. Thanks for helping me." That sounded a little more casual, right? He hoped so because mentally HE WAS FREAKING OUT. He was literally hanging out with Penny one-on-one right this exact second, so he had no clue why the idea of doing it again tomorrow was making his heart race, but he knew instinctively that he needed to look good when he met up with her, although he couldn't pinpoint why. (Still a little slow figuring these things out. Poor kid.) Maybe it was because this had been impromptu, and tomorrow would be planned and seemed like a BIG DEAL.
