Default CoMC Lesson 2: Augureys

It was an exceptionally cold day in February. The skies were gloomy, and the ground was covered in snow, though not fresh snow. The dirtiest was mostly around the barn and some parts of the pastures where the winged horses were let out to roam earlier this morning. The cleanest was blanketed around the castle. But the weather didn't bother Aleksandur, he loved it. It made him feel completely at home.

With Hera, as always, wrapped around his neck, Professor Petrov stood waiting in front of neat rows of desks and chairs just outside of the barn. The snow had been pushed to the side, revealing the dead grass underneath, so the students feet wouldn't freeze, and warming charms had been put in place. If they were still cold...they would just have to deal with it.

He severely hoped the students had looked over his rules. Otherwise, they would have to live with the consequences.

OOC: Hello everyone, and welcome to CoMC. As we wait for the lesson to begin, please review the rules linked above. The lesson will start in 24 hours. The lesson has begun please jump in where we are. If you have your student arrive late...beware the consequences.

Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.

She spent extra time fussing over her uniform trying to talk herself out of going, but it did no good because it was perfectly put together as usual. After that she spent what seemed like forever pacing in the courtyard before she finally decided she would go to her Care of Magical Creatures class. The weather was chilly and the clouds reflected her mood as she approached the makeshift classroom outside of the barn.

Kaitlynn felt the warmth wash over her as she approached closer to the desks and chose one in the middle to stand by hoping that the more students that trickled in the more shielded she could be. She looked down at ground and clasped her hands in front of her. She didn't nod or wave in the direction of Professor Petrov and his snake. Silently she waited for class to begin.

That darling darling snake had to be freezing, being cold blooded and all. Chloe took a spot near a desk in the middle of the class, tucking her hands behind her back as she waited for the professor. The snake baby wasn't the only one freezing, although it was much warmer in the prepared area.

It was difficult not to let her attention stray to watch for the flying horses, but Chloe put on her sternest expression and stared right at the professor. Look at her following ALL the rules, sir.

Archer wasn't stupid, if that was what the professor was thinking when she showed up to class. No, she knew exactly what she was doing, wearing the sequin phoenix on her back, as had become her usual. Honestly though, she had been hoping that the decoration would've caught on by now, with more and of her classmates following her lead until they were like their own version of the Order of the Phoenix. Alas, it seemed that she was going to have to shoulder this burden on her own, since it seemed like Hogwartians were a big bunch of pansies. It was one thing she missed about Illvermorny (aside from her friends). There, everyone would've been raising absolute hell by now.

Anyway, she entered the area set aside for class, surprised by and thankful for the warming charm the professor had placed. She wasn't expecting it, considering the dictator's stance on cold being 'character-building' and the fact that this professor had been hired by said man. All these thoughts stayed in her head as she stood by a desk not quite in the back, but definitely not the front.

On the one hand, Stasya could tell that Professor Petrov obviously cared for the snake that was ever present around his shoulders and neck, so that could have lulled her into a sense that he was okay. More so than the others who had turned up as new hire by the headmaster, anyway, but there was an overwhelming sense that there was something wrong. She didn’t trust him at all, and not only because of the suspicious change in the rules regarding barn visits. Of course, she really disliked him for effectively barring her from visiting all her beloved creatures; Dobby, Albus, Claire, Cygnus, and all the others. That was a given, and it was hard to gain the position of truly disliked in the tall blonde prefect’s mind. Before this term that had been reserved only for the people who had effectively taken her father away from her, but this term was challenging that.

Either way, she hadn’t given up on CoMC as a subject. She just had to hope that one day she wasn’t going to find that all of the creatures in the barn had been grossly mistreated, and she felt like assuming that lessons were the closest she’d get to keeping an eye on them all. The cold weather hardly bothered her by now, what with the daily SORE exercises outside and everything else, yet she’d been surprised to find a warming charm set up in the outdoor classroom set up outside of the barn. It had to be for the snake’s benefit. She highly doubted any of the Scrimgeour-approved professors would care one bit about their comfort, and the rules regarding what was ‘respectable behavior’ kept her from saying anything as she took up a position near a desk near the middle.

Because that was another thing that had changed. If it had been Professor Wayland, she would have claimed a seat up front. It was all a matter of trust.

It was fitting that this newest professor had such an attachment to his creature... Kind of like You-Know-Who... like... right? He walked through, feeling the warmth growing as he made his way from the seventh floor to here. He nodded at the Professor as he passed, trying to not upset Hera. He didn't need to be on anyone's bad side, but if he was... he didn't need it to be a snake. He removed his cloak and hung it over his arm for now.

By now Juniper was getting a little more used to Professor Petrov. Only a little minus the snake not that it bothered her or anything. But he just… well he just wasn’t Professor Wayland was he? Not even close actually but he wasn’t Scrimgeour (so far) so that was a plus.

This time of year, she was fully appreciate the dress code. Although the school robes were warm, she added her own heating charms for the lesson. She headed down to the barn where the first thing she seen was the winged horses. That was a good sign for a great lesson, right? She passed by the professor and his snake around his neck. Giving him a nod as she passed on her to her seat. As per usual or what was now the usual of standing next to her seat and waiting for class to begin.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

It was only February.

Was it just her or did time seem to be moving at an unbearably slow pace? The girl felt quite close to losing her mind and it was only February. To everyone who’d told her it would be over before she knew it, she could see the lie for what it was now; just a lie. It wouldn’t be over soon. Graduation wasn’t right around the corner. Lessons were around the corner. Strict professors. Unnecessary detentions and point loss. Anxiety.

Jessa made her way to the class, finding it easy to follow the no talking rule. She didn’t typically have much to say in general but these days she’d fallen even further into her silence. Everything happened in her head. It was the wildest and loudest party she’d ever been forced to sit through, but outwardly she was as silent as a crypt.

Standing silently with the others, in a spot by Chloe, Jessa spared a glance at the stables. She worried for her aethonan under this new management. He didn’t like strangers and took a while to warm up to people.

Perhaps she would pop in for a visit before heading to her next class.

Aleksandur, stroking his lovely snake wrapped around his neck, watched as his first student arrived; Kaitlynn, Ravenclaw second year. His eyes looking over her uniform to make sure she was properly dressed for the lesson. He was glad that these students were finally starting to take the rules seriously. Though he was sure to have some that still refused. For now she passed. No greetings however...they would recieve that as a group so he didn't have to repeat himself over and over.

Chloe, sixth year Ravenclaw, came up next. She was also perfectly dressed and standing next to her desk just as she should. It was a sign of respect to your superiors after all. Hopefully the Ravenclaws wouldn't be the only ones taking the respectful route.

Alek sighed as Archer made her way to stand next to a seat. Of course she would still be wearing that ridiculously looking thing on her back. It didn't even look like a Phoenix...to him at least, and he had been up close and personal with many. "That'll be five points from Hufflepuff, Archer for inappropriate attire." His Bulgarian accent showing itself. With a stern look he shook his head, disgusted at the disrespect for the rules.

Stasya the fifth year Gryffindor Prefect came in next. She was always very respectful, but Alek knew she didn't like him. Honestly...he really didn't care. He watched as she made her way to a desk and stood next to it, making sure her uniform was up to par.

Jackson, fifth year Ravenclaw Prefect. He had been very helpful showing him to the Headmaster's quarters. He noted the nod, and ignored it, making sure that his uniform was worn correctly. Was it time for this lesson to start yet? He checked his pocket watch with a sigh.

So many Ravenclaws today. Interesting. Alek watched as Juniper made her way to her seat and stood next to it. At least everyone was respecting that rule. He looked over the sixth year Quidditch Captain, making sure her uniform was in order. She seemed to have every layer she could possibly get on her body. He couldn't blame her for not being used to the frigid weather. She would just have to suck it up.

[QUOTE=DaniDiNardo;12360337]It was only February.

Alek watched as Jessa made her way to her seat. She seemed to be very distracted, not that he cared. As long as she did the work everything would be fine. He quickly looked over her uniform to make sure she was wearing it properly, before checking his pocket watch for the time and returning it to his pocket.

"Welcome, students. You may be seated." Aleksandur said loud enough for everyone to hear. He also wasn't about showman ship. He got right to the point with all of his lessons. Alek moved closer to the blackboard and with a flick of his wand the word 'AUGUREY' showed up in thick white letters.

"Today we will be dealing with Augurey's." He said with a small smirk, making him look creepier than he already did. He made his way back to the center of the space and looked around at all the student's faces. "Please, raise your hand and when I call on you, give me one fact that you know about Augurey's." Alek stood at the front of the class waiting patiently for their answers, stroking Hera's belly.

OOC: This is a very straight forward task. You have 24 hours to respond.

So it wasn’t to bad out, after the layers of robes and the extra heating charms. She was nice and toasty but it was still weird to see her breath when she breathed being so warm. When the professor told them to that they could sit down. She took her seat and pull out all of the things she would need for this lesson, book, quill, and parchment.’

To her surprise they wasn’t going to be dealing as the professor put it with winged horses but Augurey. That might be as equally exciting for her. Maybe. She raised her hand, since the professor had made a special kudo about raising their hands before answering. Who did that, really? ”Augureuys are also known as the Irish Phoenix,” Just a small contribution to the conversation.

Default assuming this is before Derf officially starts his private lessons
astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf

Being here all along and one of the first to arrive, as was mostly the usual for the Hufflepuff, Derf could appreciate the lack of a hay throne and everything else. Just them and the creatures, as he always preferred it. Though his heart did still sink considerably thinking about Professor Wayland and what had happened...but the sixth year was still entirely torn on how to cope with it all. There was still so much anger in him over the former professor's actions and under ANY authority that would have earned a proper sacking. Only given the current climate...it was the worst possibly thing he could have done to his students. Perhaps it was more a self fulfilling prophecy since Derf was fairly certain that the aim was to get all the 'old' staff fired and in with the new militaristic aesthetic the headmaster seem to be going for. Though, well, sometimes Derf wondered if the new professors went out of their way to act menacing - save for Professor Fletcher who Derf still honestly did not mind too much.

Kinda like how Professor Petrov kept smirking right now. Though he reckoned that was just because he was in on a big reveal with the lesson - as he ought to be considering he had planned it.

Augurey though. This was BOUND to be neat. So his hand immediately went up.

"They are terribly misunderstood and misrepresented creatures. Rumored to have a cry that foretells death, they are merely super proficient and informing us of when it is about to rain."

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Once Daisy was permitted to sit along with the rest of the class, she sat down and got ready for today's lesson. As soon as Professor Petrov asked his question, Daisy's hand went up. When she was called on, she answered with, "They live on a diet that includes fairies."

Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.

Kaitlynn took her seat when instructed and pulled out the things she was supposed to bring to the lesson setting them on her desk. She stared at the board where Professor Petrov had magically written the word Augurey, it was the best place to stare at because honestly the his smile sometimes gave her the creeps. She'd never say it out loud though because that would be mean. What did she know about them. She raised her hand and when called on, "You can't use their feathers as quills because they repel ink."

It was a sad time when the place you were sent to for learning no longer held any form of interest and there was nothing more to be learned. Jessa couldn’t remember the last time she was excited about what she’d be learning in a lesson and the new, rigid structure they’d taken on only seemed to further dim her interests. These days, it was a miracle if she didn’t zone out for most of the lesson—something proving harder and harder with these professors actually requiring input.

Gone were the days of her remaining silent and cruising through the lesson. Some now gave punishment for a lack of participation—a few more effective than others but none she could be bothered with....so she tended to answer.

“They’re magical creatures’l

How much thought she put into her answers was another story entirely. Mentally, Jessa had already checked out of Hogwarts. All that remained was her physical self and it could seldom coax her mind into serious thought. An answer was an answer, further more it was an accurate answer.

That was all she was required to give.

Alek didn't respond vocally. He nodded before flicking his wand and a list started to write itself on the board. They wouldn't get praise for easy answers. Praise needed to be earned. He quickly moved on to the next hand in the air.

With a nod and another flick oh his another bullet point was added to the list on the blackboard. Derfael was a plethora of knowledge about creatures...

NEXT!

Alek raised an eyebrow at that answer. There were only two other things they ate couldn't she supply the rest as well? The next bullet point made its way to the blackboard as he moved on to the next student with an answer. Hoping it was more informative.

She'd never say it out loud though because that would be mean. What did she know about them. She raised her hand and when called on, "You can't use their feathers as quills because they repel ink."
Alek nodded. That was actually a very interesting tid bit. But no extra credit deary. We don't play that game. Another flick; another bullet point.

“They’re magical creatures."

How much thought she put into her answers was another story entirely. Mentally, Jessa had already checked out of Hogwarts. All that remained was her physical self and it could seldom coax her mind into serious thought. An answer was an answer, further more it was an accurate answer.

That was all she was required to give.
With that answer he turned to the Head Girl with a sneer, "OH, are they really? We are only in CARE OF MAGICAL CREATURES! Couldn't come up with anything better? That's 5 points from Ravenclaw for a lackadaisical response." He turned away rolling his eyes.

Absolute children.

AUGUREYS
  • Known as the Irish Phoenix

Alek took a deep breath. He couldn't help his anger sometimes, especially when students gave lazy, unimaginative answers. Jessa was supposedly the smartest student at this school. He had yet to see that. But this was a lesson and it wasn't about her lack of knowledge. He needed to move on despite the annoyance.

Giving Hera a quick rub to calm him down he cleared his throat before speaking. "Before I go into more detail about the creature, what do Augurey's look like and what is their native range?" He asked in a very fake sweet voice. His patience was wearing thin already. It only took one student to ruin a good day. But he wasn't going to allow anyone to do that.

OOC: Again, very straight forward. Please try to give one detail of what they look like to give everyone a chance. You have 24 hours before we move on.

Septimus was listening as the answers were given and written down on the board. He didn't supply anything himself since he wasn't sure what else to add and really trying not to tread on the professor's nerves since he didn't seem to like what he was getting. Look like...look like. And location. Phoenix seemed too obvious with the given nickname. The Ravenclaw tried to reach for the answer, finally raising his hand to reply.

"Vultures, sir," he remarked, before adding given the other part of the nickname. "Great Britain and Ireland." It was called an Irish Phoenix after all and didn't appear too out of place here in Scotland so Britain could be there too.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Jessa didn’t so much as flinch at the man’s reprimand or his point taking. It was nearly February, the professors had been slashing points indiscriminately since September. The shock value had long gone. What stayed with her, however, was that there was no way to win. Answer and be damned, don’t answer and be damned. Seemed to her that if she was going to be punished anyway then she may as well do it on her own terms.

That being the case, Jessa simply stared at the man when he asked his next question. She had no intention of giving a response this go around. He could take another 5 points, she wasn’t going to brain up a response which meant another “lackadaisical” answer. The man was opposed to those, there was no need to offer a second.

Dull, indifferent blue eyes looked to the notes on the board. The Head Girl made no attempts at taking them down. Why bother? She already knew it all. At this point it would be a waste of ink.

The impassive expression remained on her face and showed no signs of leaving.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy knew that the Augurey ate more than the one type of food but she thought that giving one answer would allow a fellow student to provide an answer. The Hufflepuff was getting bored of certain classes but she kept her expression neutral. She thought of an answer to the second question and raised her hand. "Augureys can be found in Northern Europe and their feathers are greenish-black in colour," Daisy replied when it was her turn.

There was a beaming smile from the Hufflepuff at the professor's response to her uniform. It had been a while since the phoenix had been greeted with a simple points docking instead of requests to remove the offending garment or a lecture. It was a welcome relief.

As the lesson began, Archer's eyebrows raised. Not at the topic, though she would've thought that someone with such a unusual-looking snake as a pet would've chosen something more exotic than an Augurey. No, her eyebrows were raised at her classmates generic answers. Though, honestly, she really didn't know much about the creatures herself. In fact, she'd stayed silent through the first question because she couldn't think of anything that hadn't been said already. But now.... "They look sort of underfed and mournful, which is probably where the misconception that their cry foretold death came from." They sort of reminded her of those people that called themselves 'emo', really.

Man of few words, Derf was still not quite accustomed to the way Professor Petrov conducted lessons. But at least the lack of chit chat got them to the point and tasks more quickly which was always a plus to the Hufflepuff. The sooner theory was done and the sooner they got to handle creatures the better.

As far as appearance and native range went, Derf found himself mostly trying not to repeat what others had already said - though there really was only so many ways to say Britain and Ireland, you know? "Their greenish-black coloring helps them camouflage in their nest consisting of brambles and thorns, where they usually prefer to remain hidden. Also with them fading into the dark skies when they take flight in hard rains," he offered up as an additional explanation to the bird's coloring. "...which also makes sense as to why they stick around Northern Europe. Lots of rain."

Vague but not wrong. Septimus could have definitley elaborated more. With a flick of his wand, and roll of his eyes, the answers appeared on the blackboard before he moved on to the next student.

Noticing Jessa wasn't even going to attempt to try now he clenched his jaw before taking a deep breath. "That will be five more points from Ravenclaw Ms. Cambridge for lack of participation." Alek said all too calmly. His anger was a slow boil but she was pushing it. He turned his attention to another hand in the air.

At least someone had brains in this lesson. Alek gave the Hufflepuff, (which he still didn't know how that was even a word let alone someone's name), a curt nod and a second later her answer was on the board.

Alek listened to Archer's answer which was just as good as Daisy's, and gave her a nod, the answer quickly making its way to the blackboard. Just as he was about to walk away however, he noticed her smug little smile.

Oh...happy was she about only getting points taken? Well, he needed to remedy that. With a flick of his wand, the once glittery Phoenix transformed into a ton of tiny spiders that started crawling all over her. "Don't wear it to my class ever again...or you'll get something worse than spiders." He said with a sneer before heading back to the board.

Again, Derfael never failed to impress. But he still needed some more.....training. Alek smirked, his answer appearing just as he said it on the board, and gave the young man a nod.

SPOILER!!: Blackboard
AUGUREYS
  • Known as the Irish Phoenix
  • Misunderstood and misrepresented creatures
  • Rumored to have a cry that foretells death but actually they predict rain
  • Eat Fairies
  • Can't use their feathers as quills because they repel ink
  • Look similar to Vultures
  • From Great Britain, Ireland, and Northern Europe
  • Plumage is greenish-black in color
  • Look underfed and mournful -> misconception origin that their cry foretold death
  • Coloring helps them camouflage in their nest consisting of brambles and thorns
  • Prefer to remain hidden
  • Fade into the sky during a hard rain -> why they like Northern Europe: Lots of rain

Alek looked over the list of answer on the board so he wouldn't repeat anything that was mentioned. It was a relatively good list. But the still could learn more. "Well, you have the basics. Make sure you have what is on the board written down because it will not be repeated." He turned to the class, rubbing Hera's chin gently with his index finger.

"Their diets also consist of insects and flies. They hunt for them during heavy rain." He paused giving them a moment to add to their lists. "Their nests are tear shaped, matching their mournful features. Wizards used to avoid them at all costs thinking they would die after hearing their song, but many experiments have been done to prove that myth false. Now many people keep Augurey's so they know what the weather will be like. Birds as weather forecasters." Alek paused to give them a few minutes to write things down.

"There is also a legend that the Magical Quill of Acceptance here at Hogwarts is actually an Augurey feather." He let that idea run around their little brains for a moment before adding, "They are such shy, calm creatures they only have a XX rating from the ministry." With a flick of hos wand, four tear shaped nests appeared. Then Alek whistled, a loud sharp sound, and within a few minutes four Augurey's came flying down from the top of the barn.

"I am sure these four birds are familiar to you. Susie, Romeo, Julia, and Atreyu from our barns." Alek said his slight Bulgarian accent making it's appearance. "Now, your task is to feed the birds to get their trust. There are containers of different insects and flies under the blackboard. No fairies, unfortunately." He said with a sinister twinkle in his eyes. Alek wanted to have fairies for them to feed to the birds, but...it was vetoed. "You may work in pairs or individually. I leave it up to you. You may begin." He stepped away from the birds and out of the way of the children.

OOC: This mini activity is pretty straight forward. Get into pairs if you want, and try to attempt to get the very shy birds to eat from your hands. You have until 4 pm EST on the 28th to complete this activity. Post as much as you'd like.

“Sir, they’re known for being shy animals that usually fly in heavy rain,” he offered. He listened to the other answers and had to pretend he didn’t snort at Jessa’s response. Wow she was definitely going to win Ravenclaw any house cups with THAT attitude. Not that she ever showed a different one. Jackson sighed before writing down some notes. He had the same thought in his head that the professor voiced. Then of course, she seemed to have decided to be difficult again, and she had apparently gone mute. TEN POINTS LATER and Jackson didn’t know what to do anymore. He was getting so frustrated at Jessa, but his attention was quickly taken by Archer’s jacket. Jackson’s mouth twitched as the spiders appeared. Jackson kept his eyes on the spiders, not wanting any of them to think to head this way. Not because he was afraid of spiders, no. He wasn’t at all actually, but he would smash them all without hesitation because that’s how he handled spiders. Magic or no magic. Jackson completed his notes, listening as the next set of directions were announced.

Haha about not having fairies, but Jackson couldn’t imagine feeding a fairy to anything. He was grateful that they only had bugs to pull from. Jackson got up once they were allowed, and grabbed his fair share of insects and flies. He looked at the birds, and decided to hold the bugs loosely in his hand so that they were visible… Also because he didn’t want to smoosh the bugs together in his hand too much because that was still kind of gross. She had been quiet. If anyone had asked, Stasya would have openly admitted that the lack of any appearance that the creatures in the barn were okay was bothering her. Yes, there were signs in the paddock that the winged horses had been out earlier, but they weren’t there now. She wanted proof, and she’d had yet to deign to request permission to see them for herself from the smirking man at the blackboard when she hadn’t needed it before. Plus, she hadn’t been quiet due to lack of knowledge of the creature they were discussing. That had been more due to her sneaking suspicion that repeated answers weren’t going to be taken lightly and the others had already mentoned most of what she knew about augureys. Therefore, she had stayed quiet.

The appearance of the four augureys had brightened her mood somewhat. At least there was proof that some of her former acquaintances were okay, aside from the aforementioned and well-known fact that augureys always looked sad. She hadn’t visited the birds too often before the lockdown, but she still felt the familiarity. And she also regarded the statement that they weren’t going to be feeding the many fairies positively. All Professor Petrov would have had to do was ask Professor Noble and he’d have known she wouldn’t have reacted well if he’d subdued any of the barn fairies or any others for feeding purposes. The insects and flies, as she’d stood to approach the board to collect them, caused the tiniest of moments of indecision, but she’d still collected a handful loosely in the palm of one hand and backed away to face the birds.

Now she just had to wait and see if any of them remembered her.

It was hard not to be distracted by Jessa's performance, but Chloe would not be dissuaded from her chance to see an augurey up close and in person. She collected a handful of caterpillars and beetles and followed after a younger Ravenclaw in approaching one of the auguries. Merlin, what a truly gorgeous creature.

Not the Ravenclaw. The bird.

Jackson seemed a bit hesitant, and the older Ravenclaw offered quiet advice. "Don't make eye contact, and maybe lay the first one on the ground. Sort of letting it know that there are no strings attached." Chloe set a beetle on the ground and nudged it toward the augurey.

jackson was pretty concentrated on the birds who weren't really paying much attention to him. How rude. He was a little startled when Chloe approached, but he was quite grateful for her more charismatic hand. "Oh hey," he listened to her words and watched her demonstrate. Did she... do this often?... It took a few seconds, but one of the birds had seemed to gain some interest in the newly presented food. Would it be bad form to just put the whole mountain of food out?? Get alllll the augureys? He would totally have tried that had this been last year, or even a couple months ago honestly. He tried to look around at others and see what they were doing, because otherwise he'd just keep staring these birds down. "You're pretty good with creatures, huh?"
