Hanna would have been excited for the lesson of joint Charms and Astronomy, except for the fact that Professor Le Snail accounted for half of the teaching. Into the class she went, seeing no other student yet. Heading in, not making eye contact with either Professor, Hanna stood by her desk and didn't say a word. Which was easy enough when it came to Professor Le Roux, but not Professor Marchand. He was a Professor she very much liked and wanted to greet. This whole no-speaking thing still made her feel rude and ridiculous, especially when it came to the good ones.

Daisy quietly entered the Astronomy Tower and gave Professor Le Roux and Professor Marchand each a small smile and silent nod in polite greeting before finding her seat and standing beside it.

Skyler walked into the classroom silently. She noticed there was both the Charms and Astronamy professors. She gave them a silent bit of a smile as a polite greeting. What happened to Professor Kennedy earlier in the term still sucked and Astronomy classes since then hadn't really been the same since... still, Max couldn't help the enthusiasm he felt as he made his way into the classroom today. Astronomy AND Charms. His two favourite subjects rolled into one!

He almooooooost said hi to Professor Marchand on his way through the door but then his gaze found Le Roux and his mouth quickly snapped shut.

Max found a spot behind one of the desks and stood silently, his brain busy trying to figure out what this lesson could possibly involve. Something super awesome and cool he hoped.

Once again, Nettie was extremely annoyed that all of these replacement professors were so good looking. Not to mention, this one was FRENCH. Normally, she'd run in to the lesson and greet him in French, hoping that that bought her some sort of favor in the lesson. Not today, though. She couldn't say a word - and it had been working for her to keep her mouth shut. It made her depressed every day, knowing that she couldn't talk as much as she wanted, but so far it was keeping her out of detention and out of trouble.

Now that things had, well, continued the way they had been before the holiday break, Stasya was finding that her allegiances had only gotten stronger. Namely, those with the fired professors as well as the ones who were still here and suffering under the terror of the headmaster and his minions’ reign. Going up to the Astronomy tower for the next joint lesson, she’d been thinking about that extensively, along with the memory of how concerned Professor Marchand had been when she’d confessed what she’d been doing before the holidays. One the one hand, she’d stopped with her reports, and not only because she hadn’t replaced the notebook that had already been sent to the former DADA professor, but on the other, she still felt like she needed to do something. It was tiring to pretend that everything going on didn’t bother her.

Either way, she’d snuck what she thought was a supportive (and hopefully reassuring) smile to Professor Marchand as she’d passed him on her way into the classroom, schooling her face back into a rather expressionless look by the time she’d gotten to her seat and stood as straight as possible. It seemed like the headmaster wanted robots, so she’d give that to him and his followers.

The other replacements set his teeth on edge - there was no telling what they might do next! At least he knew what to expect from Le Roux; Hogwarts wasn't the first time they'd crossed paths. He stood a little straighter as he watched for students. He hadn't been waiting long when Hannah appeared. It was taking every bit of restraint he had not to speak to her! Instead, he offered her a polite nod - or he would've if she'd make eye contact. Instead, he watched as she went to stand beside her desk.

Only seconds later, Daisy arrived. Her nod was returned, but Gaston's expression darkened at the sight of her smile. And here was another smiling student. Normally the sight of Skyler's smile would warm his heart, but today it filled him with dread. He nodded to her politely by way of a greeting, though he gave her the same warning look he had Daisy. Maxton was the next to arrive, and for a brief moment, Gaston was worried the Slytherin prefect had forgotten the no greetings rule (more accurately Le Roux's no greetings rule, not his!). He couldn't help but breathe a silent sigh of relief when Maxton's mouth snapped shut. He would hate to take points for something as innocuous as a greeting! He nodded politely to the boy, eyes following him as he stood behind a desk.

Gaston had been in a pretty much constant state of panic since Stasya told him about the notebook. If word got out, it would be the end of them both! He didn't know what was scarier, wondering what cruel and unusual punishment the fiendish five would come up with for her or knowing they would fire him first to make sure he couldn't protect her from it. He blinked, willing himself not to let any fear show on his face; Le Roux would certainly find a way to use that against him. He almost returned Stasya's smile but stopped himself just in time. Instead, he gave her a concerned look that said, Don't let him catch you smiling! as he watched her go to her seat and stand.

OOC: You still have about 5 HOURS before class officially starts.

Skyler frowned imediately and made a neutral face. What was wrong with smiling a bit as a greeting? She mentally sighed. Of course it would be against the rules. Instead, she let out a quiet breath and stared forward.

"Good grief!" Daisy thought, bitterly as she adjusted her face so it was completely expressionless. She was no longer smiling and her eyes just stared blankly. She was getting beyond fed up with these rules but she was going to keep silent.

If Gustave noticed Gaston’s looks at all the entering students, he seemed to ignore them, and instead fixed his eyes straight ahead. He looked over at the clock and when it struck 9 pm exactly, he took out his wand and aimed it at the door.

The door swung shut loudly and locked with an ominous click.

“All of you may be seated now.” Gustave’s cold voice rang out as his icy blue eyes looked at all the students who were in attendance. Good enough. His eyes briefly landed on the Slytherin prefect, and he paused for a moment, no matter, things could he worked out later.

“I am hoping that your former, so called Professor’s education of you all hasn’t been lacking, though the lesson plans he left behind were indeed dismal. So we shall have a test to see if you are incompetent, or knowledgeable in matters of the heavens.

There will be no explanation from me of what I ask you. And I shall not acknowledge if you were correct or not. Your marks will reflect if your answers were correct or not.” He said as he walked around to the front of his desk, his robes swishing as he did so.

“What do you know about orbits? That is your question. Raise your hands to answer, I will not accept answers from students who are not rule followers.” Gustave barked out as he looked st the students.


OOC: We will be moving on in about 24 hours, the question is simple, What do you know about orbits. Good luck!

Was it just his imagination or did the Le Roux's eyes linger in his direction a little too long......? Under normal circumstances, it would've had Max on edge but this was Astronomy AND Charms and he was still too excited at the prospect to care all that mich right now.

Not even the mention of a test was enough to put him off and after taking his seat and making sure his supplies were all set up and ready, Max raised his arm in the air.

"Professor, an orbit is a path an object in space moves around another object," he answered confidently. "For example, the Earth orbits around the sun."

Orbits were cool and all, but what he REALLY wanted to know was when they were going to learn about martians.

Ugh. His voice was so slimy it sent shivers down her spine. It took a great deal of restraint not to let out a shudder when the man spoke. She pulled her chair out and took a seat when instructed to, and looked up at Professor Marchand. She tried so hard not to smile and wave.

She hated so much when the new, EVIL Professors bagged out their loved former professors. Professor Kennedy was wonderful, but Hanna had enough sense and fear to keep that to herself. The only thing that was getting her by was the thought that, hopefully, HOPEFULLY, the evil dictator and his male minions would be gone by the end of term, and all of their favourite Professors would be back.

But for now it was time to participate in lesson. What did she know about orbits? Hanna listened to what Maxton said, and then raised her hand to expand on that. "Professor, gravity is the force that moves the object within the orbit."

Skyler imediately sat down as shw was told sbe was allowed to.
Really? Incompetent? The students would now be considered incompetent? And he wouldn't accpet answers from rule breakers? What is this now? Shr bit her tongue, litterally, and raised her hand, focousing on the question at hand.
"Sir, the earth has an oval shaped orbit as it circles around the sun."

It was March. Three more months and she would be free of this place and the new regime. It would be a welcomed change having her anxiety levels go back down. She couldn't remember what that was like at this point.

The Ravenclaw stood silently by her desk waiting to be told she could sit. At that point she did, scowling to herself at the professors need to put down the former professor in order to exalt himself. It was distasteful, and without any prior knowledge of him, it was premature. Who was to say he really was or wasn't better than Mr. Kennedy? What if he was worse? It would be a terrible trade off.

Jessa spared the smallest glances at Professor Marchand. It was interesting the way the man...for the most part....held it together in the face of all these changes. Her money would've been on him falling from the ranks sometime back in November but the man had stuck it out.

"An orbit decides the length of a planet's year. A shorter distance would obviously mean a shorter year, as in the case of Mercury with 88 Earth days and Venus with 200.....224 or 5 Earth days I think, versus planets such as Neptune 164 Earth years or Uranus with about 84 of those."

The look on Skyler and Daisy's faces made Gaston's heart shatter. He wished they understood... When he gave them reprimanding looks for smiling, he really wasn't trying to be nasty. Had they been in his own classroom, it would've been a very different story! He would've returned their smiles and said hello, but unfortunately they were on Le Roux's turf and had to play by his rules. He had a strong suspicion that the man would pounce at any opportunity for punishment, even if he had to make up a reason. He just didn't want to see the girls hurt or humiliated by whatever Le Roux might dish out... but now he had a feeling that by trying to protect them, he'd made things worse!

Were they hurt? Angry at him? Gaston's mind flashed back to his childhood, to the strict private school his father sent him to, and all the old fear and shame from those days came rushing back, just as fresh as if it had just happened.
Did he just make Daisy and Skyler feel as small and powerless as he once did? Had he become the thing he hated most? Even when I try to protect them, it blows up in my face, he thought sadly. Conflict and self doubt ripped him apart, and he stared at the floor to hide the guilt written all over his face. All he could do now was get through this lesson and try to apologize to the girls later...

Gaston was so consumed by his rising emotions that he cimpletely lost track of the time until the door closed loudly,
making him jump slightly. With a silent sigh, he moved away from the door and stood at the front of the room several feet away from Le Roux, making sure the man wasn't on his blind side just in case he tried anything funny. And speaking of funny, he did not like the way Le Roux's eyes lingered on Maxton, but he was going to let it slide for now.

Gaston had to fight the urge to roll his eyes at Le Roux's comments. He inwardly groaned. If Le Roux were really the better teacher, he wouldn't need to insult his predecessor to show it! He allowed the other man's voice to go in one ear and out the other until... wait, what? Blue eyes blinked in confusion. What the actual heck? Did he just hear what he thought he heard? How were the students supposed to learn anything if Le Roux wouldn't explain anything or even let them know if their answers were correct? And he had the nerve to call Kalen a bad teacher?!

Gaston pinched at the bridge of his nose. Must Le Roux bark at the students like that? It was giving him a headache! He listened carefully to the students' answers, nodding in turn to Maxton, Hannah, Skyler, and Jessa as they spoke. Not so much a "You're correct" nod as an "I appreciate you having the courage to speak up". It couldn't be easy for them, given the present company! He remained silent long afterthe answers stopped, waiting for Le Roux to offer additional information on orbits. No? Okay then...

He had to bite his tongue to keep from launching into a lecture himself, but astronomy wasn't his area. If he stepped on Le Roux's toes, he could go complaining to Scrimgeour anout it... which would be about as good as signing his dismissal. Instead, he turned to the class and said, "Thank you, everyone who answered the last question. Now, who has an idea how we could simulate an orbit using magic? All answers are welcome." Unlike some people in the room, he would be all-inclusive.

Vaguely, she was aware of their words but most of her attention was on assessing the unspoken interaction between the pair. It didn't take a rocket scientist to know they didn't get on well but she knew hoping something would happen was a lost cause. This was still Professor Marchand. As strongly as he felt, he wouldn't do anything about it.

It wasn't condemnation by any means. She was the same, passive to a fault. Her observation was merely that; an observation.

The girl considered remaining silent at the next question but as it didn't require much thought, she raised her hand.

"An animation charm." Not a surprise to many. It was just about her favourite charm because of the wide array of things she could get done with it and how far along it'd taken her experiments. "You can animate anything you'd like to begin orbiting and it'll keep doing it until you end the charm or the magic runs out if not reinforced."

But she dared not hope that was the spell of the lesson. No, it would be something she'd never use again.

Stella shifted abit in a uncomfortable manner, she hated these type of lessons, she didn't like being ordered around like a dog! She was tired of these stupid rules, but for the sake of not losing points she kept her cool. Stella knew the last question but she remained quiet, maybe she was a trouble maker, she did say hi to the Headmaster for not following his stupid not taking rule which was stupid. Honestly all these rules were stupid in her opinion, not just that one it was all of them that she hated.

Stella had a feeling that this lesson was going to be a interesting one indeed and she didn't like it. Professor Le Roux was already barking orders, she felt like rolling her eyes but remained silent. Taking her seat she looked at Professor Marchand sadly for second before listening to the lesson with interest. Hm... Stella bit her lip for a second thinking of an answer.

Raising her hand shyly she looked at Professor Marchand. W...What about the daydream charm? Wouldn't it allow you to see the planets and stars orbiting if you wanted it to in a daydream like state?" Stella asked not really sure. Blushing she felt a bit embarrassed that she raised her hand she felt like sinking into her desk. She could only imagine what Professor Le Roux was going to say she was shaking slightly at the thought of it. Looking down at her notebook she remained quiet taking notes.

Max wasn't feeling as confident when it came to Professor Marchand's question. It wasn't like he went around simulating orbits every day and he couldn't recall reading a charm that could do that either.

After listening to the answers from his classmates, Max tentatively raised his arm in the air. Professor Marchand said all answers welcome, so here goes.

"What about ummm... well, there's the atmospheric charm, right? I know you can use it to modify the weather... maybe it can be used to modify or mimic a gravitational pull too?" Or something like that anyways.

Was Archer even batting an eye at Professor Le Roux's brashness? Nope. Was she smirking at the meaning of his last name? Quite possibly. But, to preserve what was left of Professor Marchand's nerves (which he seemingly had very few of these days), she wouldn't say anything about it. For now. Though, she hadn't answered the other professor's question either, since she really didn't know anything more about orbits than what had already been said.

Unfortunately, she was fresh out of ideas here, too. And she wasn't about to agree with the Head Girl either. Soooo, "I agree with Maxton. There has to be a way to modify the atmospheric charm to work for that purpose." Though, why you'd even want to was a mystery to her. Seemed like a massive waste of time, unless you were teaching Astronomy or something. And no offense, but she just didn't see that in her future.

Stasya knew quite well that she was nowhere near incompetent as a student, no matter how often the new professors tried to convince them they were. In fact, she was fairly certain it was more just a matter of the headmaster’s minions feeling they were so-much-better than those they replaced, yet the difference was that Professor Kennedy had the students’ trust. Fear could be a motivator, but it also could create a situation that was nowhere near what she figured the headmaster wanted. He wasn’t making Hogwarts great again, he was making it a terrifying place in which everyone was unable to trust anyone else. He was creating a rebellion, and she knew that there was just as much of a chance that she’d be considered part of that rebellion as she’d be considered outside of it.

Highly aware that her absence of an answer to the first question was possibly questionable, she’d raised her hand when it came to Professor Marchand’s question. If asked, she’d have explained that she hadn’t had any answer to the orbits question that hadn’t already been said anyhow. “Could a movement charm be used to simulate an orbit, like Locomotor or Mobilicorpus?” It made sense, since they were used to move things and also they were charms.

Well, this answer was unexpected, but it wasn't wrong! “Yes, if the caster's concentration is strong enough, the daydream charm could create an illusion of an orbit,” he said. “Good guess, Miss Starson.”

Max wasn't feeling as confident when it came to Professor Marchand's question. It wasn't like he went around simulating orbits every day and he couldn't recall reading a charm that could do that either.

After listening to the answers from his classmates, Max tentatively raised his arm in the air. Professor Marchand said all answers welcome, so here goes.

"What about ummm... well, there's the atmospheric charm, right? I know you can use it to modify the weather... maybe it can be used to modify or mimic a gravitational pull too?" Or something like that anyways.

Maxton's hand was the next one Gaston saw. Now this was an answer that piqued his curiosity! He thought for a moment, his mind already formulating possible modifications to the atmospheric charm. Filing his own theories away in the back of his mind, he gave the Slytherin prefect an approving nod. “That's an interesting guess, Mr. Carden!” he exclaimed. “Although I've never heard of such a modification existing, I don't see why that wouldn't be possible. Maybe we can come back to that later and try some experiments, see if we can make that happen.” Perhaps he could incorporate that into a future lesson, but if not, the students were welcome to experiment on their own time in his office or the charms practice room.

Seconds later, Gaston saw Archer's hand and called on her. For one wild moment, he half expected she might mouth off, and he couldn't help but breathe a silent sigh of relief when that didn't happen. He really didn't want to hand out punishments today, but if anything did happen, he knew he would have to nip it in the bud before Le Roux did. They would be safer with him handling things! He nodded in reply as he listened to the girl's answer. So it seemed she agreed with Maxton. “Sound reasoning, Miss Calrissian,” he said. Just because no one had found a way to modify the atmospheric charm yet didn't mean there wasn't one!

Gaston called on Stasya as soon as he saw her hand in the air. Here was another guess that was very close to the spell they were doing! The answer earned Stasya an approving nod from the professor. “Not necessarily the case with Mobilicorpus, but Locomotor could certainly be used to simulate an orbit. Very good guess, Miss Dalgaard-Volkova,” he said.


Gaston remained silent for a few more moments, his blue eyes scanning the room for more hands in the air. When he was sure no more answers were coming, he addressed the class, "Thank you for your answers!" He couldn't help but feel a bit smug that several students who kept quiet during the first question answered this one. Take that, Le Roux! "All of your ideas were theoretically correct, but Miss Cambridge and Miss Dalgaard-Volkova's guesses were closest to the spell we'll be learning: the Circling Charm."

He paused to give time for his words to sink in bedore going on, "The charm does exactly as the name implies, causes one onject to circle around another... in a way, similar to an orbit. This spell is a form of movement charm and is somewhat similar to an animation charm in that it causes an inanimate object to move on its own, but the movment it creates is more specialized than its counterparts."

Gaston's eyes flicked toward Le Roux for a fraction of a second. "Professor Le Roux, may I please borrow your desk for a moment?" he asked as quietly and politely as possible. He and Le Roux may not see eye to eye, but that was no excuse for unkindness! The thought had crossed his mind to ask the man himself to help with the demonstration,, but he didn't particularly want to stand in close enough proximity to him to cast the spell!

Once he had permission, he continued, "The wand movement for this charm is a little involved. First, move your wand in a circle above the object that will remain stationary, like so..." He traced a circle above Le Roux's desk. "Clockwise or counterclockwise, doesn't matter. The moving object will take whichever path you choose. Then,
tap the object that will circle around the other..." He pulled a pen out of his inside pocket and tapped it. "Put the two parts of the wand movement together and say the incantation Circulus."

He demonstrated the wand movement once more as he repeated rhe incantation. The pen flew out of his hand and began floating in circles around Le Roux's desk. "The spell will eventually wear off itself, but if you want it to stop it, tap the moving object again," he said. He tapped the pen after a few rotations, and it fell to the floor with a soft clatter. With another wave of his wand, he summoned it back to his hand and replaced it in his pocket.

Then he addressed the class again, "Take a few minutes to practice the wand movment and incantation befote we move on. Don't get discouraged if it takes several tries to get the timing right; that's normal." Usually this would be his cue to smile encouragingly at the srudents, but that wasn't happening in his current mood. A look and a nod would have to do. "You may start... NOW!"

OOC: Sorry for the late post... RL happened. It's mini activity time! As Gaston said, you mist practice the wand movment and incantarion of the Circling Charm. Work alone or in groups, but each person must attempt both parts of the wandwork and the incantation for full credit. You do not have to put the two together/actually cast the spell yet. If you need help or have questions, please indicate in the title of your post, and Le Roux or I will reply asap. You have until 3 AM EST NOV. 7 (about 70 hours) to do the mini activity.

Le Roux was watching the students answer, and he was also watching his fellow Professors attempt to teach, he had known Gaston back at Beauxbatons and quite frankly he was shocked he hasn’t had a mental breakdown yet. The man was so nervous and so.. emotional. He had never seen another being on earth as emotional and dramatic as the Charms Professor, and he was honestly shocked he was still here.

Scrimgeour should have fired him. Or sent him to a home, either way.

He watched with mild interest as Marchand made something orbit around his desk, and wondered why the man hadn’t tried to orbit something around his own person.

Ahh well. He kept his relaxed pose on the desk, smirking a bit as he thought of what he had in store.

He looked over at the students and raised an eyebrow as no one moved.

“Up! Practice! Now!” He barked at them.

OOC: You all have 50 Hours left in this mini activity.

Daisy paid close attention as Professor Marchand demonstrated the Circling Charm. She grabbed her notebook and quill and wrote down some notes. After she was done writing her notes, Daisy grabbed her wand and practised the complicated wand movement. First, she moved her wand in a clockwise circular motion and then she lightly tapped her wand tip. After she practised the wand movement a few more times, Daisy put her wand down and went over the incantation in her mind.

"Circulus. Circulus. Circulus."

The Hufflepuff decided to again practice the wand movement repeatedly due to how complicated it was. She didn't say the incantation due to being comfortable with the pronunciation.
