*Nadia sees the professor walk to the door and open it while walking her way to the classroom. She steps in just behind the teacher,

"Hello, professor," she says. "Time we don't see. What have you got stored for us today?"

Nadia gives a polite nod and smiles while walking to a chair.

Raven walks into the classroom and smiles at the professor. She gives a polite wave and takes her seat near Nadia. As she takes her seat she pulls out all her other Vocabulary words and then studys them while waits for teh professor to begin her class.

"Hey Nadia," She says in a slight whisper.

*becca slowy walks in and smiles at the professor and takes a seat in the back and waits for class to begin*

Professor Rae smiles at the girls as they enter. She points to the lesson title posted on the board at Nadia's question, and the girl reads "Giants."

"I was thinking we'd wait just a bit longer and then jump right in. Thank you for your patience."

Raven looks at the bored and smiles at the words giant. Raven turns her book towards Giants and look up interesting facts about Giants

Professor Rae claps her hands together. "Alright, I'm tired of waiting. Let's just go ahead and get started. As you can plainly see, today's lesson is about giants. We are not going to debate whether or not giants fall into the 'Dark creature' classification, because we're covered this issue rather extensively already. What I will say, however, is that a giant is dangerous regardless of your beliefs, and so we will study how to remain safe in such an encounter."

"Now, how would you classify a giant, according to what we know about the MoM classification system?"

*raise hand*

Well, I'd appoint them XXXXX (4), the most dangerous. There's two reasons for this that I'm telling: one because they are as dangeous, or even more, than trolls, which are classified as XXXX (4), because of their strength - double it and you have a giant. Plus, gigants are beings (in the Division of Beings, not in the Division of Spirits or Beasts I mean), not *creatures* solely, so they should be treated with great respect; the same with merpeople & centaurs.

... Though, from this point of view we might classify them as XXXX (4), as merpeople, centaurs and, well, unicorns are.

Professor Rae nodded. "Yes, Nadia, you hit on what I was looking for - five points for Slytherin. A giant does not get the 'creature classification' because he or she is not a creature. He or she is a being. Let's review that for a second. What does being a being entail?"

Well, er, there was quite a mess in the wizarding organization before we decided on our most recent definition. There were various attempts to classify beings, Spirits and Beasts. One was by saying a Being was whatever could walk in two legs, or look like a human (humanoid), other was that it was whatever could 'speak' - but of course by 'speaking' we meant or own language -, and, finally, it's whoever can have the intelligence to understand our rules and be able to share the responsibility of, err, it," Nadia finishes quite lamely. "Sorry, don't know how to translate it into the right words."

*Lotus looks around and pulls out a small tubby little man from her bag and sits him on the desk*
"Do you mind if my Gnome Clive takes notes for me? I hurt my hand playing wizard chess."

*Clive picks up a pen and and begins running back and forth on the page copying things down*

"Yes, that's a very good description, Nadia. Take another 5 points for your house. A being is considered to be one who can understand laws and help in the creation and following of them. Now, a giant is considered to be a being, while other 'being-like' creatures are not. For example, the merpeople are not held to be beings. Why is this?"

"Because they live in their own world with their own beliefs."

"Okay, Skiving, but WHY? I"ll give you three points for being on the right track, but... why would both groups decline being status? Why would they voluntarily choose to remain 'animals' in the eyes of the Wizarding world?"

"I realize we are a bit off-topic, but this is an issue I care about passionately."

Do they follow our laws?

"they probably don't like our beliefs and choose not to partake in them, and with all the dark arts going around it really has a point to it."

Giants believe that you should always take natures way. It is showed that they like to make fire out of wood and nature products to make things. They don't have to use magic and man made things to please them. The little things is what counts

Well yea that is true. But working with magic when it came to their needs. They were amused with how magic was used but never wanted to be bothered with it when it came to leaving. Soem thought magic was bad and was only for hurting people.

"I agree, I think they like recieving gifts of magic... but maybe I am mis-recalling this..." she takes out quill and paper and writes down somethings other students have said

"Zellana, one of the perks of not being considered a being is that they can exist outside of normal Wizarding laws. Of course, if they present a significant threat to Wizards and Witches, their status won't help much."

"I think you have the general idea, but basically, the MoM classification system is just a means of organizing all living things into a system that makes sense to Wizards. It takes a very limited look at other 'beings' before generally lumping them into the idea of intelligent, but still below Wizards and Witches. Some beings decided that they weren't willing to live by these standards set forth by us, so they decided to ignore it or exist outside of it. Unfortunately, the slightly-short-sighted system classifies them as creatures now."

"But giants are definitely beings. They are intelligent, although they prefer simplicity. And they are extremely volatile. Where do the majority of the giants currently reside?"

"In the mountains away from people"
