| | |  Barn and Pastures
 As you walk past Professor Wayland's hut, you will notice that there is a huge barn not too far away, with the Nursery between them. The barn is a home to many magical beasts, including some hippogriffs, winged horses, and other large and small creatures. In the middle of the barn there is plenty of open space which is perfect for taking some of the smaller creatures out of their pens to play. There are also pastures outside around the barn with fences surrounding it. You can take the larger animals out there and play with them or ride them. There is also a magical barrier that will not allow the creatures to go outside of the fence, for your protection and theirs. Professor Wayland has provided buckets, gloves, boots, helmets, brushes, etc. for you to use. The students and other staff members are permitted to come in and interact with the creatures. Anyone that enters the Barn area signed a permission slip before entering.

First thing, right after lessons, Rylee waited outside of the Hufflepuff common room for Reese. There was LOADS of things to do! All last term she had told him about everything there was to do here at Hogwarts and now that he was finally here with her there was no sense in wasting any time in getting started. She was going to show him all the best places... starting with the barn and pastures.
The very second her brother stepped foot outside of his common room into the corridor his hand would've been grabbed by hers and off they would've went no doubt dashing through towards the grounds as quickly as she dared giggling the entire time.
"Ready to meet all the creatures?" Rylee asked skidding to a stop just outside the large barn doors her bright blue eyes shinning.

It was ALWAYS the best part of the day and certainly the ONLY thing he had to look forward to so far at school.. The time when lessons were over and he would meet His best friend and sister just outside his common room and they could be off on their adventures.
" Mhm.. I sure am!.. How was your classes? ", Reese said as he happily took hold of her hand and tore through the castle and out onto the grounds. " Wanna meet all the neat creatures that I can!", he added. And every bit of that statement was true.. Animals and creatures of all kinds were his passion.. He felt at ease in their company.. Just as he did in Rylee's.

The hippogriffs. Even from this distance the were awe-inspiring. Most of them were partnered up in pairs, and had another hippogriff to keep them company, but there were three that were alone. It was these three that held Quinn's attention currently. Were they lonely in there by themselves? Were they sad? Or where they kept alone, because like Quinn, they preferred it often to being with their own kind.
It was hard to read a hippogriff's expressions to determine which was the case. Finally, Quinn selected one that seemed more lethargic at present than the other two. It could have been he was just tired, or it could be depression. She decided her intentions worked either way. If sleepy, he would get a nice bedtime story. If depressed, he would get some time and attention.
She took exactly two steps closer to his stable, and curtsied deep and respectfully. They were after all proud and regal creatures. That she knew from reading. Quinn waited, patient and anxious.
The hippogriff studied her intensely, giving nothing away, and for a brief moment Quinn wondered if this is what it felt like for others when she studied them. At last, though, came the return bow.
Quinn stepped up to stable door, careful not to move too fast, or seem threatening in anyway. There was a placard on the stable door. Grey Feathers? The name certainly seemed to fit. "How do you do, Grey Feathers?" she asked with another small curtsy. "I don't think I'm quite allowed to touch you without permission," she said, regretfully. Wasn't that part of the greeting ritual? You bow, and if you get a bow back, physical touch is the next part?
"I'm sorry. How about I read to you instead?" Quinn held up the ever present, nondescript book in her hand, slowly, and let Grey Feathers look it over a moment. She took a seat on a bale of hay near the stable. "This book is about a unicorn. I'm sorry I couldn't find one about a hippogriff. There don't seem to be that many I've found. And the ones I've come across have seemed rather insulting to me." The fiction books at least. "I hope this is alright?" She opened the book and began to read. "The Last Unicorn, by Peter S. Beagle." She smiled at that. "I named my beagle Peter S. after him." She let out a small, uncharacteristic giggle at that, and flipped the page. Quinn began to read, "Chapter one. 'The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived alone...'"

"That isn't much help you know," she replied with a laugh as she made her way over to the first stable which only contained Flobberworms. Not much of a thrill factor really but she had promised to show him everything in the barn. "We'll work our way through then. That way you can see everything and you'll know where everything is." Not to mention if another needed to be taken care of maybe they could help with that.
Rylee nodded. "That's normal in every lesson, Reese. It's just something you have to learn to deal with." There wasn't anything that could be done about it unless the professor kicked that student out.
As they moved from one stable to the next getting to the more active and playful creature Rylee became aware of someone else inside the barn. Whether the person was already there or had come in after them and she had just been so focused on the creatures and hadn't realized it until now she didn't know. She was vaguely aware of a voice though and what appeared to be someone reading out loud?

Reese nodded as she said it was the usual to have others be annoying in class.. " Yeah.. No different from primary school.. It just ruins it for those of us who are really ready to learn this stuff, ya know? " he replied to her statement.
Just then his ears perked up as he too heard a female voice inside the barn.. And he was pretty sure he knew who that voice belonged to as well... " Is that you, Schmebster?! ", he called out to the disembodied voice.

There were other voices in the barn now too, but that wasn't unexpected, thus they were largely ignored by Quinn as she continued to read to Grey Feathers. She turned the page. "Chapter Four..."
"Is that you, Schmebster?!"
Quinn bit her lip to hide the grin that was attempting to form.
"Careful," she warned. "I'd hate to have to follow through with my threats." She looked up, eyes scanning the barn around her. There was no sign of the Boy. "Where are you?"

Rylee giggled. "And we will, Reese." She knew very well that he wanted to see every single creature there was that she could show him. They would get to them all in good time. "Flobberworms eat vegetation mainly cabbage and lettuce." Really they weren't very much to look at but they were there in the barn so she was going to show them to him before they moved on to the next stable. "Want to move on to the next stable or do you have any more questions?" Whatever he wanted to do, they would do.
"If it's always the same ones ruining the lessons try staying on the other side of the room if possible." Makes it easier to focus the further away from a person you are. Sometimes anyhow.
Rylee wasn't at all surprised that her brother heard the other person in the barn as well. What she hadn't expected was for him to call out to the person... or for said person to respond. Schmebster. GROAN. The girl from the train. There went their fun afternoon in the barns.

" Well what are they for?.. What do they do?..Ohh!!! Do they fart flames?!", he asked excitedly. That would be pretty wicked if the did.. He kind of giggled a bit at the visual in his head of flames shooting out the Flobberworms' bums now.. Tiny lighters.. Hehe.
" I stay away from 'em but ya know how it bugs me.. All the interruptions and breaks in concentration.. They're a bloody menace.. ", he added as he watched the wriggling worms..
He beamed hearing his new friend Quinn call back to him.. The truth was he thought she was pretty neat and he definitely liked her spunk.. The fact she wasn't going to be walked all over was an appealing quality to the first year badger. " Come off it, Mate.. Ya know you're not gonna do a flippin' thing to me.. Besides.. I think it suits ya! ", he teased right back.. " We're at the Flobberworms!.. Who are ya talkin' to over there? "
He took ahold of Rylee's hand and started to walk toward the sound of her voice.. He was determined to get his sister to like his new friend even though they had gotten off to a rocky start on the train.

Not even biting her lip was stopping the grin anymore. "I might," she countered, "just to prove you wrong." She didn't say anything about his claims that the name suited her. Why would she? What had started as Beth and her messing with him had become something more; something that seemed to unite them in some way. It was all really quite irksome, and Quinn did NOT like it at all. Ignore the smile she was failing to suppress, if you would. Thank you.
She closed her book and turned to Grey Feathers. "I think this is where we should leave it for today, don't you? I promise I'll be by tomorrow after lessons to read some more." Quinn stood up and curtsied once more to the hippogriff before turning and following Reese's voice to the Flobberworms.
"Why are you hanging around those things when there hippogr...." She turned the corner and spotted Reese and his sister. "Oh, you're here too?" Ignoring the sister for now, or maybe even, forever... Quinn turned back to the Boy. "I was reading to Grey Feathers the Hippogriff." She held up her nondescript, leather bound book as evidence. It had no title or any distinguishing feature to identify what the book was.

She ignored the calling of her bluff for now. She'll show him what could do when the time was right. For now..."Do you know how to approach them, because they're very proud creatu..." He just snatched the book out of her hand? Quinn tilted her head slightly and narrowed her eyes. Her wand was out in a flash and tapped the top of the book quickly but firmly as he was opening it. She said nothing though. Not even a hint of a sound, because that's all it took. Saying nothing.
As Reese began to flip through the book, the very last of the print inside was already fading away to nothingness, leaving only a completely blank book.
Quinn watched him and waited, expectantly.

Reese didn't mind at all that when he glanced at the pages of her book the lettering was fading away.. He didn't even want to read the book.. He was more just being a punk and playing around.. " Relax, Schmeb.. I didn't really wanna read yur diary.. But yeah... I've read lots about Hippogriffs... Easily offended, but loyal once a bond's been made.."
He handed her back her book once he had finished talking.. " I like the binding on that.. Are ya gonna introduce me to him or what?"

She did know. All to well. Being a high energy child, Rylee had trouble blocking things out so it made focusing on the Professors lessons difficult sometimes to begin with. Toss in a couple of troublemakers and all chance of her being able to truly focus on what was going was lost. This was why she tried to sit right at the front of the room. If she couldn't see what was going on around her it helped. "I know, Reese. Believe me, I know." Not really sure what more to offer but when she does think of something he'll be the first to know.
"The mucus they create is used in Wiggenweld potion. It's a very important ingredient for it." So yeah they were kinda boring and not all that cute looking but they were useful in their own way. Then Reese being Reese went and said that. Just like that Rylee busted up laughing. "N-no... but th-that would b-be the most wi-wicked thing ever!" she gasped out between bursts of giggles before she got herself under control again.
Barely had she stopped laughing and she was being brought towards the other girl. Rylee didn't resist nor did she complain. Oh, you're here too? What was this girls problem? If she wanted to play, Rylee would play. "It's nice to see you again too, Quinn," the ginger gave her the most sickeningly sweet smile she could mange to muster up. She wasn't going to be rude. Oh, no. She was WAY above that.
Apparently they were skipping over all the other creatures and moving straight on to the Hippogriffs. Which was fine really. Not exactly how they had agree on it but nothing was set in stone. Only wait... what now? Rylee cast a quick sideways glance at Reese, he was asking Quinn to introduce him to the Hippogriffs? Wasn't this their thing?

Quinn glanced over at Rylee at the pleasant greeting. That's how you want to play it, then? "Sure," she replied, turning back to Reese. The Sister could play all she wanted, but Quinn wasn't going to.
"It's not a diary." She took the book back and held it lovingly, not protectively, to her chest. "It's any book I wish it to be. Provided I've had the occasion to copy an existing text into it. I'm currently working my way through Hogwarts' library. Right then," she spun abruptly on her heels and started off in the direction she came. "This way."
As she approached the Hippogriff stables again, Quinn slowed. Then stopped all together a decent distant from the stables. "Wait here." She curtsied to Grey Feathers, who bowed his head more readily in reply this time. Formalities aside, Quinn approached the stables delicately and then gestured to Reese, and quite obviously only to Reese. "This is Reese," she said. "...and his Sister. Reese, Grey Feathers. This is where you bow and wait for him to return the bow before approaching."

Oh! How many nifty little things he learnt from his sister! He shrugged off the whole disruptions in classes being his main source of aggravation so far. The fact was, that was going to be an endless tribulation while at school. " How do ya get 'em to mucus so ya can get it?" , he asked excitedly..
And as he waited for her response Quinn came into view and the smiles came out and he could see their hakles raised... What was with these two?.. They didn't even hardly know one another and I can feel the chill in the air between 'em, he thought. But he shoved the thought from his mind and carried on with their conversation.
" I didn't really think it was yur diary..", he said without care.. Truth was he didn't even look at the pages.. He was just trying to get a rise out of her.. But he got more than that... She had an enchanted book!! His eyes getting all be and that dorky look of wonder overcame the Ginger-Puff. " Seriously?!.. That's wicked!.. Show me how it works?...", Reese practically begged her as he walked alongside her.
He didn't even realize she had led them all to the Hippogriff stalls and he stopped short at he direction and watched the whole introduction process. Without hesitation he stepped up and bowed low.. " Pleasure, Grey Feathers..", he said and then he shot Quinn a sideways look. " I know how to approach 'em, Scmeb.. I do read, ya know? "
Turning to Rylee who was there at his side he asked her, " Ya comin?..". He was hopeful she'd stay and hang out with them. He came down here with her and he still wanted her to stick around.. He always would.

Quinn grinned at how wide-eyed and full of wonder he got at the mention of her book. "My own design, actually. I mean, I had help with figuring out the spells and incantations to put on it, and someone had to cast them for me," as she didn't have her wand yet then, "but the idea and a majority of how to execute it were mine." There was a slight beam of pride to her. "I got the idea when..." she stopped as if realizing what she was going to say, and her eyes locked more on Rylee. She turned back to Reese. "Let's just say, I spent some time somewhere where the only access to books were what certain people brought me, and I'd finish them quickly and be stuck with nothing to read for a while, until new books were brought."
Quinn held up her wand, "Watch." She tapped the wand firmly on the binding and held the book close to her lips. "Wizard of Oz. See?" Passing the book over to Reese to examine, Quinn turned back to Grey Feathers. It was just them, right? So it'd be okay. "Can I touch you?" she asked, reaching out slowly, into the stables and waited.
A moment passed. Then another. And finally, Grey Feathers pressed his head into her hand. Quinn grinned wide, fully revealing her dimples. "Wow." Then the moment was passed, and Grey Feathers turned away. She lowered her hand and looked back at Reese. "To copy, all you have to do is tap the existing copy of the book, then my book, and say, 'Effingo Librum.' The original enchantments were more complicated, though."

" Seroiusly?!.. ", he said with a fair bit of surprise.. He knew she was smart, but this?... THIS was the neatest thing he'd ever laid his eyes on. " How long did it take ya figure out the wording and all? ", he asked as he took the book after she tapped it and spoke the simple incantation.. And he wasted no time in opening the book to the first page and beamed at the bold print before him. " Holy merlin's ghost!!.. You're gonna hafta teach me how to do this.. It would come in handy for my research..", Reese said as he closed the book.
The first year hufflepuff listened and caught the mannerisms and realized she was sharing a tidbit about herself.. It took him a bit by surprise.. This was a new point in their friendship and he couldn't help the grin that spread across his face at the thought that he'd actually made a real live friend at school!.. It was a miracle!! And he'd connected with what seemed to be a like minded person. He'd have to be sure and get the rest of the story about how the book came to be needed later when they were alone.
He waited for her to finished addressing and bonding with the big feathered creature before he made to hand her the book back.. " Can I try?", the ginger asked. He wanted so badly, since he could remember, to touch a hippogriff.

She shrugged; a tiny, minuscule gesture that still managed to convey itself. A slight rosey tint touched her cheeks. "I had plenty of downtime. Reading. Violin. Working that out. I had help though. Beth's mum. She helped figure it all out and cast it for me." But now Quinn had her own wand, and was practicing magic properly. "Sure. I'll have Imogen send the incantations over and we can cast them together."
He wasn't prying. She found herself smiling despite herself again. It was another thing that impressed her about him. He knew when not to ask questions and leave a thing alone for now.
"Don't ask me. Ask Grey Feathers. Just ask him, and hold out a hand, slowly, and let him come to you. Proud creatures, remember?" She looked back at Grey Feathers in admiration. "Proud and beautiful."

Rylee would have gladly answered any and all of Reese's questions but what really was the point in that now? They had already moved on from the Flobberworms. She could fill him in on all he wanted to know about them later on.
What was being said between the two didn't go unheard. Everything about the not diary was noted as was the incantation. It was all being filed away for possible use later on. Oh, and don't worry. When Quinn locked eyes with her, she held the younger girls gaze until Quinn looked away first. There would be no backing down from her.
The introduction to Grey Feathers was unnecessary. She was here last term and came into the barn and pastures on a rather regular basis. Not to mention she was part of the Creature Companions club. Rylee watched her brother greet the large beautiful with a small smile, remaining back several feet so as not to overcrowd him. She did however wait her turn before she bowed to Grey Feathers, "It's nice seeing you again, Grey Feathers, I take it you're well?" she spoke soft and calm with there was a hint of a smile to her voice as she got that bow from the Hippogriff she expected to get.

Reese knew Rylee could tell him pretty much anything he'd have to ask.. But she was the one being all quiet and subdued... So very unlike her usually bubbly happy and extremely friendly self.. He'd make a point to find out what was up with that later when they were alone.. He wasn't going to put her on the spot in front of his friend.. Especially, when he could see from the sickeningly nice way Ry was talking to and looking at Quinn.. Ugh! Girls! I'll never understand 'em
Oooh! was that another pink hued smile?.. And she explained she had a lot of down time and a lot of help to get the wording right for that groovy book in her possession. He thought she was kinda cute when she got all pinkie and shy like that.. And then she said she'd send a house elf over with the incantation and EVERYTHING!!! He was sooooo stoked now!.. He was beaming and he had to stop himself from hugging her because it was so awesome that he was going to be able to have a book like hers that he could copy all the books he wanted into it!!
" That would be brilliant!", he said with the dorky grin plastered across his face.
" I know I can.. I just didn't know if ya were done yet, Quinn.. Do ya think we could get him to let us ride him? ", Reese asked as he turned to try and get Grey Feathers to let him touch his head the way Schmebulock had.

Quinn watched the sister greet Grey Feathers easily with an unmistakable look of annoyance about her. She turned back to Reese. "Great. I'll get Imogen on the mirror tonight and ask her to send them. You find a blank book to use and we can try casting them together on it."
And then, ride them? "Probably. But that'll be just you. I like you and everytihng, but I don't fancy being stuck in detention with you. So while you do that, I'm going to meet the winged horses." She gave Reese a grin, ignored Rylee, and bowed to Grey Feathers before turning and heading away to another part of the stables. Last thing she wanted to do was pretend to listen to an irate professor chew her out for flying off on a hippogriff without permission. It wasn't the trouble she'd get in that bothered her as much as being forced to pretend to listen to a long endless lecture before the punishment.

With her full attention fixed solely on Grey Feathers whatever looks Quinn was giving her went unnoticed. Which was just as well too as Rylee wasn't missing much of anything anyhow.
In her own little already considering the different activities she was going to continue this term she nearly missed the talk of riding Grey Feathers. Huh? Rylee didn't need to say a word, not that she planned to when Quinn walked away. Good. "Are we finished here or?" she briefly glanced from her Reese to the Hippogriff standing in the stable.
Did he want to continue looking at the other creatures?
