Default Ravenclaw Table

For those who belong in Ravenclaw House, in the middle of the Great Hall is where your table awaits. Blue banners containing an embroidered bronze eagle float above the polished table in honour of the wise Rowena Ravenclaw. Already placed on the tables are silver plates with accompanying cutlery and goblets. All that is missing right now are the mountains of food and pitchers containing your favourite beverages.

Though your stomach might be growing as you take a seat on one of the long benches next to the table, it is important to not get hangry -- gnawing your arm away or jabbing your fork repeatedly on the surface of the table will do no good whatsoever. Give everyone some time to get settled in and wait for Headmistress Hawthorne to deliver her speech. Keep yourself preoccupied by catching up with your fellow housemates or those who are visiting from the other tables until it is time to sink your teeth into the hearty and delicious meal prepared by the house-elves.

Was it time to eat yet? Kirk had his ears turned off temporarily with the conversation going, but some distraction would be nice now.
Tonight was the night. The first of many lasts, and quite frankly, Jace didn't know how to feel about it. He'd been told many years ago by his family that his Hogwarts journey could be a perilous one, and yet there he was, in his complete Ravenclaw uniform standing proud, accomplished, dead tired from the past week's exams and NOT DEAD. As his usual, Jace entered the premises in silence, daring not to attract any attention from anybody. He thought he'd enjoy his last feast in comfortable silence, however, given the crowd in Hogwarts, that was quite impossible.

With his head slightly hung, he occupied his usual seat at the back, only to notice that he wasn't alone, either in occupying the backbenches or in quiet contemplation. He grinned at their Quidditch Captain, giving him a small wave of his hand, and busied himself by looking at the other tables, taking in the hodgepodge of emotions. Most were excited to leave school, the others looked distant, and a small number were in a melancholic mood-- graduates, most likely. His eyes then wandered up at the Dais, relieved to see the professors who were involved in the Dufftown incident in one piece. His eyes lingered on two certain adults, his memory subconsciously doing a playback of a very memorable Hospital Wing incident. While his mind was busy with the memory, Jace reached into his pockets, feeling the two parting gifts he made for them.

Mel had been speaking with Matt and Vi for a while when her attention slipped back to Kirk…this was probably harder for him seeing as he was coming back here after everything. Taking a few steps over toward the quiet side of the Ravenclaw table…she was still curious really to see if the dorm had been just as majestic as her sisters had said it had been. Still, being in Gryffindor had been the right move.

It would have been harder if she’d been a Ravenclaw too…that would have made the dorm feel emptier than it needed to be. Quietly she placed the tin on the table in front of Jace and Kirk. ”they’re cookies…as a congratulations for making it here thing?...and they’re more on the filling side incase people y’know messed with the food.”

Was she paranoid? Maybe…but that was what Hogwarts did. ”Oh…um, Kirk? I was wondering if you’d want to take Darcy next term…?” she asked with a small smile even though she was fighting the urge to just give him a big wet tear-filled-hug.

As the ceiling gradually lost Kirk's attention, the growing crowd in the Great Hall took over his thoughts. It didn't get past Kirk when he felt a presence sitting by him and being acknowledged. The Captain returned the grin with a sup nod, "Hey Jace." He was cool, "What a way to end the year." Seriously, from his memories in Dufftown one moment he was taking in the view and the next.. well, should he really be surprised given their school's history? "So.. how's next year looking for you?"

The next moment was the light clank noise in front of him from Mel. Kirk hadn't been sure on how to take today, he knew it was coming. They knew it was coming. His usual relief from the sight of her began to morph into a sense of.. something. A slight gnawing feeling in the pits as the remaining time at Hogwarts this year was approaching its end. "Thanks," His face may have been blank, but that was normal with Kirk. He somehow managed to keep a straight face throughout many things. Some of his own thoughts that he wanted to do shifted into him opening up the tin to try a cookie. "..These are good." He took his time chewing, especially after hearing the next thing. Darcy.. their not-so-little Jarvey -anymore."Of course." They'll be in good hands.

Darcy.. their not-so-little Jarvey -anymore."Of course." They'll be in good hands.

Jace quietly fished his hand out again and began to toy around with his cutlery when Kirk acknowledged his presence. "Hey," he started off and gave their Quidditch captain a slight bow of his head. The seventh-year simply shrugged and crossing his arms over his chest and propped his elbows on the table. "You're right. But I guess the recent event should answer certain questions...but, it does raise another question if you know what I mean." It was a never-ending cycle, really...or was it simply a Ravenclaw brain's way of processing things? The ever curious creatures they were. "I'm going back to Japan. I've decided to continue my education there...so I could also be with my family." His father, who is a British citizen, decided to move there two years ago before taking up his current position as the British Ambassador to Japan. "I suppose you'll still be the Captain next term? Possibly the Head Boy too?" Of course, he'd root for Kirk simply because he's in the same house as him. He may be a graduate now, but once a Ravenclaw, always a Ravenclaw. "Have you got any summer plans this time of the year?"

The distraction of food also tore his attention from everything else. From the tin of cookies, he diverted his sight to the bearer of said snack and gave her a polite grin. "Thank you, Mel. And congratulations to you too." Alive, unscathed, but he could sense her morose vibe; and an indication that she's one of those who will be leaving the Great Hall for good, just like him. He'd let the two talk, while he got himself a cookie. He really wasn't hungry since he was busy fighting off the sullen mood that naturally cocooned seventh-years, but to show politeness, as is his far eastern custom, he indulged himself with a piece and took his time to consume it since Jace wasn't sure if his presence was welcome.

The table was starting to fill up, and not just with Ravenclaws. One Snake talking with Juni and a fellow Gryffindor 7th year, Melbourne, was talking with Kirk. Wait…when had the captain gotten there? She must have gotten distracted with memories and emotions again. “Hey Captain," Cassie greeted him with a friendly smile. “Congrats on a great year!” Ravenclaw had pushed out a 2nd place after all was said and done which wasn’t bad for the sport’s return to Hogwarts after so many years of absence and the team mostly first timers at the game.

SPLAT!

Ugg…Cass felt that on the shoulder of her robes. “PEEVES!” she yelled, taking her wand out almost threateningly. The poltergeist was one thing the seventh year was CERTAIN she wouldn’t miss. She almost spelled him but caught sight of the headmistress moving to speak so settled for cleaning herself up instead as she glared at the ghost before turning her full attention to the head table. She didn’t want to miss anything, on this her last feast speech.

Slytherin won…clap, clap, clap.

That had been clear by the mentioned banners. But then the topic was changed to graduates and Cassie felt the weight of everything. She moved and got up to her feet as instructed, letting all eyes in the Great Hall fall on her as well as her fellow graduates as the Headmistress continued and lead them in more clapping. Finally they were free to sit down and Cass debated whether or not she should go give her presents just yet.

As soon as he started eating his cookie, Jace's ears automatically screened the noise of the almost filled Great Hall as future plans unfolded in his mind. While his mind distracted him of his surroundings, for some reason, he couldn't ignore the weird feelings in his chest. As the evening pressed on, he felt like a fish out of water slowly getting suffocated. He quickly consumed his cookie and drowned his mouth and his feelings with a goblet full of water. Jace was mildly disappointed in himself, thinking that he wasn't this sentimental when he left Mahoutokoro to pursue a European-structured secondary education.

The half-Japanese was quick to snap out of it, all thanks to Peeves. Whatever it was that the poltergeist planned, Jace was more than ready for it. Glitter, glue, ketchup, eggs? Yes, the pranks got old rather quickly and he wasn't getting any of it. Did he forget to mention that he got admitted to the Hospital Wing because of his candle wax prank? Not funny. He almost lost his head during his fourth year because of it, figuratively and literally. Jace sat, and in a split second, his wand was out, casting an invisible umbrella shield over himself to rebound whatever Peeves decided to pelt them with.

Within a few minutes, the Headmistress rose from her seat, went to the Dais and delivered her speech. He clapped along with the rest, congratulating Slytherin on their victory. However, he wasn't ready when the Headmistress called all the graduating students to stand up to be acknowledged. With a bit of confusion, he followed the rest of the seventh years and listened to what the Headmistress had to say. Once again, his eyes lingered on two of his professors who made him feel comfortable and welcomed all throughout his Hogwarts career. He wasn't the best of the best, but he was confident that he was definitely a better version of himself because of them.

Jace slowly sat back down, and momentarily stared at the spread in front of him. It really did feel it was the last night, and at that moment, he knew he had to power through despite the melancholic mood.

"It really does.." Kirk would have to survive one more year of the unpredictableness. Sometimes he did question how his parents allowed him to attend here, only sometimes though since it did have it perks. Anyway, "Japan wow.. That's cool, what will you be studying over there?" Captain Kirk of course couldn't help smirking over Jace thinking of his next year's status, "Heh, Head Boy. That would be neat." He wasn't getting his hopes up much on that, but would entertain the idea. "Next year's Cup will be ours long as I'm Captain." They never ceased to put up a fight in the matches this year. His summer plans? "I'll probably forgo traveling this summer, gonna stick close to home and work, either interning or babysitting again."

"Hey Cassie, thanks." It was interesting at the very least. "You played amazing." Seriously, their chasers were on fire. Even in the matches they lost they always managed to outscore the opposing side. "You all set for the next year?" Yeah, she was graduating too. Whether she continued schooling or.. other things. He'd like to know.

As Kirk was seemingly lost for words with Mel, he wondered if perhaps she'll sit with him or head back to spread her goodbyes with her housemates. He would prefer the former but understand the latter, there was the train ride home where they could spend more time at. Before he could extend the invitation verbally, Peeves just had to rain on their parade with eggs. He silently cursed before attempting to cast a shield over him and Mel. Now there were eggs on the floor and table. Gross.

Speech happened at last after Peeves went off. Slytherin won both cups, his father and Uncles would be pleased. And acknowledging the graduates, it never felt more real. Kirk clapped with the others before the food replaced the broken egg shells. Hmm.. this really was something.

To be honest, Gaston was sort of dreading the Ravenclaw table... almost as much as the Gryffindor one. Not because he didn't like the Eagles; quite the contrary! He knew these goodbyes were going to be some of the most emotional of the night, and it would be a miracle if he could maintain even some semblance of composure after this. Deciding he couldn't put it off any longer, he took a deep breath and approached the table.

"Hello! How is everyone tonight?" He managed a forced smile for the students (Dorian, Jessa, Cassie, Juni, Cameron, Slate, Kirk, Jace, & Mel), but he couldn't hide the sadness in his eyes. Giving everyone polite nods of acknowledgement as he passed, he moved down the table until he came to Cassie. Ah, Cassie... such a bright, hardworking student; teaching her had been a joy!

"Hi," he said, smiling as he set another box containing a black quill and a card on the table in front of her. "This is for you, Cassie. I hope you know what a pleasure having you in my classes has been. Good-" Oh, dear Merlin, no! He couldn't say that word! Instead he said, "Good luck."

Gaston's expression turned wistful as he turned to the other Ravenclaw graduate (Jace). This made two members of the Reed family he'd had to say goodbye to in roughly a year's time. His thoughts wandered back to his first term teaching at Hogwarts, how Jace had been the one to comfort him in the hospital wing after the waxed staircase incident and again later on after he'd had his heart broken at that disaster of a wedding for the poltergeists (not that the boy had any idea why he was so sad at the time). "Jace..." he began, but his voice trailed off. He handed him a box containing a quill and card, just like all the others. Hopefully the gift would buy him some time to swallow the lump rising in his throat. "It's been an honor teaching you..." He hoped Jace would forgive his brevity; he didn't trust his voice not to break if he said much more.

As he looked down the table, another seventh year (Mel) caught his attention. "I haven't forgotten about you, Mel," he said. How could that even be possible? "Come find me at the Gryffindor table later, and I'll give you your gift there." He wanted to say goodbye to his graduating Lions all at once, and he was saving them for last because he knew he'd be too emotional to function after visiting that particular table.

The night drew on, and so did the conversations around him. Jace was quiet, eating his last Hogwarts food, busy memorizing the taste and texture of it. He did crave for Japanese food, but tonight, he'd decided to just live in the moment. It was his last chance, anyway. "Curse-breaking, in Osaka. If I qualify, I might do a double major and take up Auror Training too," he said, as he drank from his goblet. The smirk on Kirk's face didn't go unnoticed. Jace too smirked at the idea and gently elbowed the Quidditch Captain, "I'm sure you can do both, Kirk. And yes, you better stay as Captain if you guys want that Cup." Because seriously, Slytherin can't possibly hog all the awards in two consecutive terms, right? "You don't look like the type who'd babysit," Jace grinned at the picture of Kirk holding a baby, "I'm mighty terrified of young kids...but if it meant extra galleons, I'd probably give it a go too..."

Instead of keeping quiet all throughout the night, Jace found himself socializing with his fellow Ravenclaws, that he completely missed Professor Marchand descend from the Dais. The Ravenclaw took a double take, and almost choked on the mashed potato that was inside his mouth. He'd been stalling all along, obviously as he'd never had any reason before to come up to the Staff Table to have a chat with the professors, except for tonight...for obvious reasons. He'd been working on his courage all night, subconsciously even, but now, one of the two professors he'd been eyeing earlier was by their table giving out...graduation presents. Jace felt his stomach turn again because a part of him didn't want to deal with this weird, melancholic emotion that came with being a graduating student. But then, he needed to power through it.

As soon as his name was called, Jace excused himself from Kirk and Mel, rose from his seat and stood before Professor Marchand, graciously accepting the box that was handed to him with a slight bow of his head. "Thank you, Professor..." The Ravenclaw trailed off as his eyes lingered on the box before putting it down beside his plate. In return, Jace fished out a handsome, medium-sized wooden box that smelled like cedar and gave it to the man before him with two hands. "And this one is for you," he said, again, with a slight bow of his head.

Dear Professor Marchand,

I know you are not a fan of goodbyes, so I would like to start this letter off by saying that my last night in Hogwarts will not be a benchmark to end things; rather, it is a celebration of new beginnings for us graduates, and a job was well-done to those who we will leave behind, including you, our professors. I think I can speak for the rest of us when I say that the last seven years have been no walk in the park, and yet, here we are in our respective uniforms; standing proud like never before. We wouldn’t be here, ready to face the world if it weren’t for teachers like you Professor, and for that I thank you with all my heart.

As a token of appreciation, enclosed is a small wax figure of a samurai. A reminder of the time I first met the real Gaston Marchand; he was not just a mentor, but a person who made me feel I mattered. I was never just a face, or a random kid in a Ravenclaw uniform who has parents who could send their son to a prestigious school to get their money’s worth in the end. To you, I have a name. To you, I was a student who has potential. I never quite understood why you had to go over and beyond your duties as a professor, but the warmth of your friendship, and the assurance that I was worthy, made my stay here in Hogwarts a memorable one.

I will be leaving for Japan in a couple of days, and while that will keep me from seeing you in the future, I am leaving this mini-samurai under your care. May it be a reminder that you once taught and inspired a doubtful and timid student, and that now, he’s more than ready to see the world, honouring his Hogwarts education while he's out there busy, making a name for himself.

It has been a privilege to be your student, Professor Marchand. I wish you nothing but the best, of the best.

Your friend,

Jace Reed

It wasn't long after he'd finished his main course that Hirsch left Laurel at the staff table - sorry, Laurel - and descended down to his house's table. Gaston was already there so the Defence professor stood off to one side as a way of giving him some privacy and waited for him to finish. He tucked his hands into the pockets of his jacket, where one hand brushed over the letter he'd received moments earlier.

When it looked like he wasn't interrupting, the man went and sat down in an empty spot between two Ravenclaws. "Congrats on second place, Kirk. You've done a great job with the team." Smile. And another smile was sent over to Jessa over there, who looked much happier. That was a good sign, wasn't it?

Anyways. Now, he turned to two of the people who were the main reason as to why he came down here in the first place. He kept the smile on his face but something tugged at his chest as he looked between Cassie and Jace. It was weird to see them as, well, graduates when he very clearly remembered them as first years who had first started the same year he did. And now.......

Breathe.

"Congratulations on getting through seven years and graduating Hogwarts," he said, his eyes on both of the seventh years, "Are you excited about the adult world?" He was intrigued.

“You’re welcome…it was great,” Cassie remarked though shrugging her arms slightly at the compliment on her own contributions. “Just tried my best.” It was all she could do given she hadn’t had that much experience before being picked for the team. As for the next year, the shrug was almost repeated but instead the seventh year behaved and stayed still. “I think so,” she answered, “well as much as one could be prepared.” Who knows what all could happen in the future? Her seventh year certainly proved that with what had happened with the possessions.

With the feast in full swing after the headmistress’ speech, the Ravenclaw took some food herself to keep hunger from making the night more of a struggle. She had taken a few bites before noticing a certain Charms professor making his way down the Ravenclaw table.

Ugg…the feels had returned.

“Hi,” Cass echoed his greeting with her own smile and nodding at his words. “Thank you,” she remarked for the gift she was given.” I do, Professor,” she added, grabbing the gold bag and standing up to face him face to face. “And I very much enjoyed your classes and grateful for your help.” With that she offered the bag containing a small lion on a pedestal with a Gryffindor scarf that she had charmed with the various spells he had taught so it moved and occasionally disillusioned and reillusioned itself.

And now she could try to calm as he dealt with Jace, her fellow graduate.

Except right behind him was her head of house. A man whom had taught her defense for seven terms, helped her dueling and was all around supportive especially when he took over as Ravenclaw head. “Thank you, Professor,” Cassie said with a smile before weakly nodding. “Yes…more the most part.” Trying not to get emotional, she reached back beneath the table for the silver bag before straightening and offering it to Hirsch. Inside was the following gift. It had reminded her of almost dueling Ravenclaw dragons and thus the man. “It was an honor to have you as a professor and head of house.”

"Congratulations on getting through seven years and graduating Hogwarts," he said, his eyes on both of the seventh years, "Are you excited about the adult world?" He was intrigued.
If he had known better, he would've prepared himself more, because now, Professor Marchand wasn't the only one present at the table, but his Head of House too. The other professor he wanted to see before the school closes. Jace could feel his cheeks burn as random memories popped up like daisies in his mind. The annual welcome house gathering in Ravenclaw tower, his Defense lessons with his Head of House, that time in the Hospital Wing with Professor Marchand, and most recently...the prank he did on Professor Hirsch's door. Again for the record, it wasn't his idea, but nonetheless, he found it amusing to see his Housemaster walk around the corridors sparkling, literally.

While he let Professor Marchand read his long letter, Jace stepped aside to bow to Professor Hirsch, trying his best to calm himself in the process. "Thank you, professor. We wouldn't be here if it weren't for you," he said in his usual calm demeanor, fighting the underlying sadness that threatened to surface. He then reached under his seat and gave Professor Hirsch his gift. Inside the rectangular, chiyogami printed box was his old and trusty bokutō; or training wooden sword. He brought it with him during his first year in Hogwarts, and met Professor Hirsch along the way when he made use of his Defense training room instead of the Room of Requirement. It was of sentimental value, but it did not stop him from giving it to somebody whom he trusts whole-heartedly. To add a personal touch to it, Jace engraved it with Japanese characters that say: "Eternal Vigilance is not just the price of liberty, but of everything you hold dear." Should the wielder touch the bokken, it would translate into his or her native language. In Hirsch's case, it'll scroll out in German and English.

As he watched Hirsch with his gift, Jace shrugged at the question. Right now, he was feeling excited and sad. "I look forward to it, Professor. After seven years in Hogwarts, I feel like I can take on anything." Well, except perhaps the wrath of his lovely mother. Jace made it to the latest edition of the Daily Prophet, explicitly saying that he and Skylar made an attempt to go and capture Duncan Williams back in Dufftown. And while it might excite his brother Jakub, he wasn't quite sure if his mama will approve of it. He'd already heard the exasperated words of Uncle River earlier, and he didn't want any more of that. And speaking of his Uncle River, Jace hung his head and went red in the face. "Also...I'm sorry about your door professor. While uncle River isn't sorry about it...I am."

Gaston's initial smile started to wobble and falter as it hit him that this was probably the last time he'd see Cassie. "You're quite welcome, Cassie," he replied, and her next words got a slight smile from him. "Good; don't ever forget that!" He felt another sudden wave of emotion bubbling up inside, and he had to swallow hard before he could speak again. "Thank you... though really, no thanks are necessary. It is -" The word caught in his throat as he corrected himself. "-was my job to help you in any way possible."

His bright blue eyes widened in shock as he was offered a gold bag. Now that was unexpected! He was supposed to give the students parting gifts, not the other way around. All he could do was stare at the little lion for several moments, at a complete loss for words. Suddenly it vanished, then reappeared again and pounced before finally returning to its place atop the pedestal. Despite his sadness, he couldn't help but laugh a little. "This is adorable -and what an amazing display of spellwork! I'll treasure it forever." He put the lion back in the bag and the bag in his inside jacket pocket (equipped with an undetectable extension charm) where it would be safe until he returned to his office.

Gaston could only bring himself to nod in reply to Jace's thanks. He was afraid he would start sobbing if he tried to talk now. Another gift? Merlin, these kids were going to spoil him! And there was a letter too! Oh dear... this was going to make him an emotional wreck (more so than he already was), wasn't it? The thought crossed his mind to tuck the letter into his pocket to read in his office later when there was no one around to see him fall apart, but somehow he had a feeling he was meant to read it now.

A tear splashed onto the page, and he had to turn away so as not to smear the writing. He never even dreamed he would have that much positive impact on his students! Once again, his thoughts went back to that day in the hospital wing and being comforted by a much younger Jacen Reed, and here he was again comforting him when he needed it most. He reminded him a lot of River in that way. No, it was more than that. Jace hadn't just comforted Gaston; he'd inspired him, much the same way he said the professor once had for him. There had been times when he felt so alone and disliked at Hogwarts that he questioned if it was all worthwhile, but this letter was proof that some good came out of it.

He gently ran a finger down the wax samurai figure and closed the box, putting it in his jacket pocket with Cassie's gift. "I-I will guard this with my life..." he said, wiping his eyes, and his voice dropped to a whisper as he added, "You said I inspired you, and now you -" He held up the letter. "-this - just did the same for me. Thank you."

He started to turn away, but there was one more thing. "You'll write to me every so often, won't you?" he asked Jace, then looked down the table at Cassie. "Both of you?"

Jace watched Professor Marchand from his peripheral, and for a second there, he thought it was a bad idea to give the man his gift and letter in person. If anything, Jace wanted the man to feel proud of his accomplishments. Right there at the Ravenclaw table, a bunch of seventh years wouldn't be celebrating tonight if it weren't for his hard work in teaching and mentoring their stubborn heads and hearts. Tonight, like any other End of Term Feast, them and the future graduates of Hogwarts will forever symbolize the teaching staff's pride and victory. Professor Marchand ought to get used to that.

While Professor Hirsch was busy with his own gift, Jace now focused his undivided attention on the Charms Professor as he turned and wiped away a tear. The Ravenclaw's breath was caught in his throat, then slowly exhaled when the man started to talk. "I only spoke the truth, professor. I've had countless teachers in my life and they were all inspirational in their own way. I wish for you to keep doing what you do best, and that is to inspire young students like me." Jace said, grinning weakly at his professor. Endings were really always bittersweet.

While it was almost forbidden to make contact with mentors, Jace made a quick-fire decision to take a step forward towards Professor Marchand, and gave the man a hug. "Thank you for everything professor," he said in a low tone before releasing the Gryffindor Head of House. "And yes, we will keep in touch. As expected from true blue Ravenclaws, Cassie and I still have a lot to learn in University, so do expect more mind-boggling questions your way. You can't really get rid of us that easily." he said in an attempt to put a smile on Professor Marchand's face. He didn't want teary send-offs to be honest.

“I won’t.” Cassie assured Marchand, just as she wouldn’t forget all that she had learned from him. Charms had turned to be one of her favorite and best subjects and not necessarily because it was her father’s specialty. The professor in front of her certainly had a hand in it.

It was clear the man wasn’t expecting her gift…either of their gifts as Jace followed hers with one of his own for the Charms professor. And while he didn’t say anything at first, the emotions were there all over Marchand’s face. And it was Cassie’s turn to feel sheepish and at a loss of words as her handiwork was complimented, the gift to be treasured.

As for the writing, the Ravenclaw girl was quick to nod as Jace beat her to the words. “Of course, Professor,” she agreed, echoing her fellow graduates answer. “Always learning means always needing someone to bug,” Cass teased the man with a chuckle.
