Potions Lesson 2: Sweet like chocolate Having lost his morning break to disciplinary matters, Professor Noble had brought a large cup of coffee with him into the classroom. He needed caffeine most mornings, but something told him that he’d require it even more today. Hopefully he wouldn’t regret opting for a more, er, relaxed style of class. He sipped the black nectar as he waited for the students, occasionally glancing over at the large cauldron steaming on the burner at the front of class - the burner where he'd usually be demonstrating alongside them. Those close enough to peep inside would see the potion was a bright shimmering red; those further back might have instead noticed that the side benches were unusually full today. Where they usually hosted extra equipment or ingredients, today they were laden with several large catering-style trays covered in a cloth. Picking up a piece of chalk, Noble headed to the blackboard and started to write the overarching theme for their next few lessons, Bewitching the senses, underlining it with a flourish. Do come in students, and get settled quickly. Who knows what temperament the less-than-ideally caffeinated Potions Professor might have? Lesson Progression Greetings and first question Answers and second question Experiment time! - Try a miracle berry and taste what happens... Now on to the magical version - the taste-perception altering potion Finishing up |
Rubbing his eyes in a failed attempt at waking himself up, Daehyun dragged one foot in front of the other on the long way that was in between his dormitory and the Potions classroom. With one hand holding the strap of his bag from falling off his shoulder, and the other stuck in the pocket of his robe, he sleepily made his way into the classroom, and nodded at professor Noble in a half-hearted greeting. "Good morning, professor," he said, before dropping his bag next to the nearest table. While the back of the classroom might get him unnoticed if he fell asleep, he didn't want the temptation - he needed to stay awake, unless he wanted to get in trouble with the scary man. Instead he glanced around as he pulled his textbook and notes out, his eyes falling on a bright red potion. ... and then on the blackboard. Bewitching the senses?! ... they weren't going to be brewing Amortentia, were they? |
Emmalyn slipped as quietly as possible into class and made her way towards the middle of the room. Close enough to see what was going on, but far enough back to hopefully stay out of direct site of Professor Noble. She was absolutely positive he hated her. Each and every potions class left her feeling terrified and she had spent a good hour before class talking herself into attending. Once she sat her specified supplies down, she glanced around at the various new additions to the room. There appeared to be some sort of trays covered with fabric. She wondered what could be hiding underneath, waiting to make her day even worse. Then her eyes reached the black board. Bewitching the senses was written across and underlined. She had no desire for her senses to be bewitched. No desire at all. Out of her complete inability to be rude and against every cell in her body telling her to keep her head down and survive class, she gave Professor Noble a nod and said "Hello, sir. I hope you are well." Then she quickly looked down in hopes he wouldn't take too much notice of her and end up calling on her in class. |
Tenacius is making an effort today. He's making an effort to keep a straight face. So much so that when he walked into the Potions Classroom he nodded his head at the Potions Master all w'zup gangsta mode, keeping that infectiously bright smile and easy laugh all buttoned up. Not that he was laughing his head off inside, he still found the Noble's name to be a hoot. Them Mama and Papa Noble must be brilliant comedians. But oh attention is taken by the bright red solution bubbling away, all the better because if he opened his mouth now the entire gangsta facade will collapse. And then as he made his way towards his workstation he saw the catering trays-- oh now he's really paying attention. Are they cooking something really edible this time? Did that red potion have anything to do with it? Are these trays just being used as storage for something else? Can he take a peeeeeeek? |
Daisy entered the classroom and greeted the Potions teacher with a "Hello, Professor Noble." She sat down next to Emmalyn and got herself ready for the lesson. |
Rylee had her usual bright sunny smile on her face as she entered the Potions room. "Good morning, Professor Noble!" she chirped merrily bouncing along to find an empty seat. She waved at her fellow firsties and a slightly older girl before finding the perfect spot. "Mister Lion Ace," she grinned with a giggle plopping her bottom down onto a chair near him. She pulled out a sheet of parchment and her quill and ink before taking to the benches pilled high with covered items. The words on the board also caught her eye. Bewitching the senses. What was that supposed to mean? "What do you think that means?" she whispered to Ace since he was closest to her. |
Ohhh joy, time to be awake. Kye was already ready for summer... specifically, sleeping in without an alarm or anything to wake her up. Ohhhh heaven. Then of course, she would have to give up her eating habits so... she made sacrifices either way. Those counted right?! At least her stomach was full though, otherwise she would NOT be having it. Mornings were supposed to be for relaaaxing. She entered the classroom, taken slightly aback by the color of the potion brewing up in the front. It was a beautifully bright red, but she had to wonder what it was for. "Good morning, Professor Noble," she greeted, looking at the man before finding a seat. |
Professor Noble was SCARY and if he knew he could get away with it, Max would skip this lesson for the rest of the term. That wasn't exactly realistic though, and so the fourth year entered the dungeon classroom nervously. "Hello Professor," he muttered as he walked past the teacher and moved to find a desk toward the back of the room as he always did. He busied himself for a moment, taking out parchment and self-inking quills and then he looked up at the board. Bewitching the senses...? What in Merlin's name did that mean? |
Potionnnnsss. Sigh. Potions. Natalie wasn't good at potions. She didn't have a good enough attention span for it, nor did she find it very interesting. So, needless to say, Natalie didn't come into class with a very good attitude. She was polite, however, so she did send a nod towards Professor Noble. "Hi, professor," she greeted before plopping down at a desk near the back. Then she got out her notebook and her textbook, hoping that she could find some potions inspiration before class begun. |
After the whole drama in Hogsmeade that involved a certain Potions professor, Cassie had seriously debated dropping the subject. It wasn’t like she was planning to major in anything potions related and the thought of facing the man had set her on edge. She would have had to think of a much better reason to explain her decision of course, which would have taken some thinking. But in the end, her Ravenclaw side decided to persue the academic and continue on rather than use her smarts to explain away her absence. For the latest lesson, Cass slipped into the classroom, her bag of supplies slung over her shoulder and taking in her environment as she tried to settle among it. A brewing potion up front…covered cloth trays along the side…and one master potioner writing something on the board. Bewitching the senses. The seventh year unconsciously shivered before catching herself. “Good day, Professor,” she greeted simply and she sought to move futher into the classroom and find a seat at a free workstation. |
The only reason Stasya hadn’t figured out a way to drop Potions after her absolute surety that the professor disliked her was that now she had a reason for at least trying to deal with the subject. Her secret, maybe not-so-secret, mission to become an Animagus meant she had to at least apply herself to one potion. She couldn’t let her fellow researchers down, especially not Emmeline. Therefore, she’d just have to deal with Professor Noble and quietly hope that they weren’t going to be dealing with animal parts in yet another lesson. “Good morning, Professor Noble,” she said as she entered the classroom, sparing one glance for the words written on the board and another for the covered trays on the benches lining the walls. Had he asked the elves to make all of that just for the lesson? The question kept going through her mind as she made her way to her usual seat and settled in. So they were going to be dealing with the senses. That could mean all sorts of things, and if he really had food hidden under all that cloth it only intrigued her more…Maybe they were going to be getting prof of Derf’s theory about teacher-provided food. |
Alastair wandering into the dungeon for the Potions class. He was interested in what this class would be about. Senses? He thought, Something like invisibility or something cool like that? "Hello Professor" Alastair said as he took a seat. He pulled out his textbook and set out some general ingredients so he could be prepared. |
Abra wasn't entirely certain he had the constitution for this class. It made him a nervous wreck, and that included the hours leading UP to the lesson, as well as the time spent actually inside the dungeon classroom actually, and then that in turn made him mess up probably literally everything. Because he could be smart sometimes, Abra often chose a space as far towards the BACK of the room as he could possibly get, whilst making sure he had a quick route to the exit if necessary. It probably wasn't such a great idea, seeing as he messed up the instructions even when he was near the front of the room and close to Noble and the blackboard, but being further back meant feeling hidden and therefore safer. After entering the classroom, head down, and mumbling an incredibly quiet greeting to Noble without making eye contact, Abra headed right to his usual place, set down his things, and took his seat, before anxiously tap-tap-tapping his fingers on the desk. Okay. This was okay. He was inside the classroom now, all that was left was to count down the minutes until the lesson ended. This was fine. It was fine. Tap tap tap... tap-tap-tap tap tap... tap-tap-tap tap tap... tap-tap-tap... |
Potions. Skylar was indifferent over the subject; she usually faired well with it given her ability to follow instructions and pay attention. Yet, she also wasn't sure she was ever going to need it. But then again, knowing how to brew a potion could prove advantageous, maybe. Or not. Honestly, the Slytherin Captain had zero idea. Although she supposed it would be good for continuing to hone her concentration skills, which were skills that could be valuable in whatever field she winded up choosing. Of the ever growing list. And Professor Noble? He would help get her to where she needed to be, of that much she was certain after working with him months now. "Morning Professor," she greeted, sliding into an open seat near the front near Kye. Smiles for you, dormie. Huh, red potion? Bewitching the senses? If the Professor's tired appearance was anything to go by, a red potion might be indication for either a girding potion or Dresden's draught, the latter of which Skylar recognized the name as a Potions Master who taught her parents, which was a potion to keep one awake and aid in concentration, the sixth year knew. There was also a love potion possibility, but surely Noble wasn't one to teach a bunch of teenagers to brew a love potion. While pondering the possibilities, she started a fresh page of notes for today, Text Cut: notes |
Scarlett always found the Potions master to be super grumpy. It didn't matter to her, though, because most of potions involved NOT interacting with the professor and actually brewing the potion, so she could ignore his foul mood most days. Still, she was a firm believing on "Good morning professor!" she told him happily as she took her seat. |
SPOILER!!: Replies! A quick glance at the clock confirmed it was a couple of minutes past the hour, and Noble swooped down from the dais on which the blackboard was located, and along the side of the classroom. Kicking out the stop, he let the door swing closed with a loud BANG, which should help gain the attention of those who had either decided now was a good time to share the latest gossip, or who hadn’t gotten enough sleep last night. Anyone that came now was officially late. He straightened his robes as he returned to the front, letting his voice fill the room. “Over the next few lessons, we’ll be talking about how we can bewitch the senses…” He paused there a moment, letting the thought hang in the air, wondering what ideas it conjured up for each of them. “That is…sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch.” So no, no amortentia was going to be brewed. As if he’d be that stupid. “Today we’ll be starting with taste. So first…what can you tell me about how we perceive taste?” ooc note: Hai everyone, thanks for coming to play with Noble and I! Class has now officially started. If you haven't yet posted, please feel free to jump on in and pretend you’ve been there the whole time - if you post yourself as late, expect IC repercussions. I'll be moving on in 24 hours or so. This is an open-ended question, but please try to keep your answers to only one or two points so that others have a chance to say things too :3 |

Regardless, at the back of the classroom is where Natalie sat and vaaaaguely began to pay attention to the lesson. They would be... bewitching the senses? That sounded dangerous, honestly. Like, it sounded like the imperius curse or something. But what did she know? Not much. As for taste... and how they perceived it... Well. "Well, uh... our taste buds?" Our taste buds are what... "perceived" taste... right? Maybe she should have stayed silent. |
Okay, so maybe bewitching the senses had absolutely nothing to do with Noble's less than awake self. And maybe it was literally just that. Skylar wrote the five senses down on her parchment, though it wasn't something that was unknown to her. Which brought her to the answer of how they perceive taste, it was more than just a single sensation and just the differing taste buds in ones mouth, on one's tongue. "Taste, in our brains, is actually a food's flavors, smells, and touch rolled into one, so it can't be limited to just ... one sense." But yes, it used taste buds, along with the feel of the food and the odors. If something smelled sour, it was going to taste as such. |
The bang from the door slamming shut nearly shot her out of her seat. Once her heart rate slowed to a more resonable pace, Emmalyn did her best to focus on Professor Noble. She didn't want to miss any of what he was saying. Senses, yes, she had those. She remembered the song they used to sing at day camp about the senses and almost let out a giggle. She knew that song was going to be stuck in her head for the rest of the week. After thinking a few more moments and waiting her turn to answer, she raised her hand. "Sir, we have different regions on our tongues that taste different things. One part for sweet, one for salty, bitter, and sour." She paused a moment. "I also agree with Skylar. The way we taste comes from more than one sense. My dad, he's a pastry chef, he says people taste with their eyes." That always sounded funny to her when she was little. She would picture people putting their eyes on the food to see if it tasted good before eating it. How would they be bewitching their senses? And, what was in that pot up front? She hoped they wouldn't be made to test out what ever that potion was on themselves. |
It was rotten luck really, falling behind when she knew she had Potions next. The Ravenclaw bolted down the corridor, dismayed at the fact that she didn't see anyone else walking to the Potions lab by the time she hit the dungeon corridor. Merlin's beard someone tell her she wasn't late. See, late was reason enough to run back up to bed--the faster the better to work up a 'fever'--then swallow something to make sure she was sick. On its own, being sick wasn't the hugest deal, but this was Professor Noble and just about everything she did turned out to be wrong for him so to actually do something wrong....yeah...she'd go ahead and pass on that one thanks. Jessa skidded to a stop at the door, slipping in just as the man appeared there to slam it shut. Phew, talk about a close call! The Ravenclaw mumbled a greeting to the man before taking a seat at the very back. Now that she wasn't in danger of the man's ire, she could focus on the danger of having her lungs shut down from the sudden sprint. Jessa reached into her pocket, pulling for her inhaler and taking a few puffs while the man began the lesson. She didn't have time to look about and let her curiosity wander, that was reserved for being a few minutes early to class and being afforded all the time in the world. For her, it was already time to settle down. "Your taste'll be pretty skewed when you've got a stuffy nose for the reason Skylar touched on. One of its links is to smell." Breeeeeathe. |
Daehyun visibly flinched at the loud BANG when professor Noble had swung the door shut, with an unnecessary amount of force, though effective - he was very much awake, though he still had difficulty in keeping his eyes open. He made a mental note to stop spending nights reading, but there was something so comforting about reading while everyone else was asleep and he was surrounded by deadly silence. So they'd be bewitching the senses... starting with taste. While he felt more awake, his reflexes had yet to return, so he'd fallen behind as answers flew here and there, his brain taking too long to function. Instead, he'd decided to jot down everything that the others had answered, and remained silent. He supposed perceiving taste differed from one person to another - maybe one thing that he found tasty, another person would not - but he wasn't sure how it all worked. His thoughts were a jumbled up mess, so for the moment, he'd settled on paying attention. |
Kye returned the smile to Sky, giving her a wave. As if she didn't see her all the time, right? The door shut with a loud bang and Kye rolled her eyes. What was it with the professors and their apparent need to slam doors?? She was awake enough... they were just being rude. As for the question posed to them, Kye sat quietly in thought. Yes, taste buds were the obvious answer.. but Kye nodded when Skylar spoke. Jessa as well. "Yea, our senses of sight and smell work together to tell us what kind of food we are eating," she agreed. "I would say that's why we often here phrases like 'That looks tasty' or 'That smells delicious.'" Because if you thought about it, those wouldn't make sense on their own. "Although they can trick you... If a meal looks good but tastes rotten, that's a terrible time," she added, recalling a regrettable dinner she had once been presented. Ugh... disgusting. |
If he had been two seconds slower, the door would have slammed shut right in front of his face but lucky for him the door closed just as he entered the room and he let out a sigh of relief. No time to catch his breath though so with a quick nod of the head as a greeting to the professor, the Ravenclaw sat down at a station. While the first question came, Dorian silently placed his stuff on the desk while he thought of an answer to give. After he was done placing his textbook on the desk he raised his hand in the air. "We taste by putting food in our mouth" he said and thought that technically he wasn't wrong. Perhaps not the kind of answer the professor was looking for... |
Harriet smiled as she listened to the Professor. The sound of the next few lessons sounded really interesting to be honest, and she was quite excited. She made a note on a spare piece of a parchment, so that she could research the topic a little, and know some things when they did the lessons. She hoped that would help her be in the know, and be able to do well with the lesson. She wanted to do well, but she was glad that the lessons seemed to be interesting, because that was always good. and they were starting with taste first. Hattie liked taste, mostly because she liked to eat and drink yummy things. But first, she needed to answer the question. she wrote some notes down, of what her fellow students were saying before she put her hand into the air, and spoke when it was her turn. "Well, we taste by putting food into our mouth, and the foods touch our taste buds. But like a few of my fellow peers have said, the sense of taste is closely linked to smell, and I'm pretty sure that if an individual can't smell, they then struggle to taste as well" |
Hmmm. Scarlett truly had no idea what type of potion they'd be brewing today - obviously it had to do with taste, but she wondered if it was a spell to enhance flavor, or make it seem like you had no sense of taste at all. Either way...what was the point? Not that it really mattered to her. She was just here to practice for NEWTs at this point, lets be real. She raised her hand. "I believe this is another sort of taste bud that has been studied more recently, that gives us that...savory sort of flavor? In addition to the other ones already brought up," she added, since she didn't think anyone had touched on that while she had been scribbling down notes. |
