Default Office of Professor Noble

As you enter Professor Noble’s office, the first thing you’ll notice is that it’s utilitarian rather than decorative. Three walls are covered in shelves, two almost groaning at the weight of books on them, and the other housing a number of obscure potions ingredients and equipment. The fourth wall only lacks shelves due to the fireplace. The mantle is sparse, save for a gold wind up clock covered with a glass dome in the centre. A bright fire burns within the grate, a small copper cauldron suspended over it with a spatula self-stirring a mysterious liquid merrily bubbling away.

Of the other furniture, the large wooden desk dominates the room, for the most part covered in various academic books and papers interspersed with a few lesson plans and piles of student work for marking. The only corner not to be covered in paperwork holds a coffee pot and two photo frames, the only evidence of Ignatius’ family. The first contains a torn and tatty picture of a young girl, Professor Noble’s step-daughter, proudly knelt down in her cricket kit, still wearing her pads, and holding her bat. The second photo is clearly much more recent, where Abigail has flourished into a beautiful young lady. A pride comes into Professor Noble’s eyes when he looks at it. It was on her suggestion that he applied for the job at Hogwarts.

While most of the furniture appears mainly functional, the chairs are the exception. Upholstered in an elaborate orange-gold fabric, with detailed carved dark wooden legs, both his own chair and the two for his guests are exquisite pieces in their own right. If Professor Noble has offered you one, do make yourself comfortable - they’re charmed to be just the right amount of cushioned.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Dinner had barely concluded when the Ravenclaw rose from the Slytherin table where she’d had dinner with her friends while restlessly waiting for the meal to be over. It wasn’t that the food had been bad—tonight the elves had made a favourite of hers—but she wanted her book. Somehow she’d managed to wait the entire day and had gratefully fallen onto other materials for reading and advancing the experiment but it didn’t mean she’d abandon this one tothe man.

Jessa gave a few firm knocks at the door, enough to alert him to her presence and the urgency therein within it being an outright assault on the wooden structure.

A part of her considered the likelihood the man may still have been up in the Great Hall finishing up his meal with his fellow staffer members but the man didn’t strike her as the social type giving her no reason to believe he would linger behind to participate in what was likely idle chatter. Jessa was a firm believer in the ability of adults to prattle on about nothing in particular, even more so than children.

The Prefect took a measured step back from the door just to ensure that should he open it himself rather than by means of magic, she wouldn’t suddenly be standing too close to him.

No, but really, where WAS he?

Unfortunately for the Ravenclaw, Professor Noble had decided to be on the more social side this evening. Plus dessert had been quite exquisite, so he had lingered a while longer to enjoy seconds and share a couple more stories with his colleagues. So her knock did nothing to alert him to her presence, because behind that door he was not.

He wasn't too far behind though.

"Ah, Prefect Jessica," he said, spotting her ahead of him as he sauntered along the corridor. "Come to re-claim your book?" He pulled a bundle of keys from his pocket and unlocked the door to his office, giving it a bit of a shove with his shoulder to open it. His overly large and grumpy cat scowled at the disturbance from her spot by the hearth. "Yes, yes, Annie. Hello to you too."

After a quick glance at the cauldron suspended in the fireplace, Noble moved to take his seat behind the desk. He opened a couple of drawers to file some papers, but didn't retrieve her book just yet. "Is there anything else you'd like to talk about first?"

Prefect...Jessica.

Merlin this man was determined to never call her by any of the names her parents had given her, wasn't he? Jessa turned at the sound of his voice, stepping further away from the door so he could get it open. She didn't bother to correct him, as she wasn't of the opinion it would make a difference the next time they ended up in the same place. Just....why bother? It wasn't crucial to getting her book back, in fact a wrong name did very little in the grander scheme of things.

She watched him enter the office, remaining where she stood just outside the door, leaning against its frame. "I am, yeah." Here for her book that is.

Blue eyes wandered briefly over to the grumpy looking cat, oddly not surprised about its temperament when you considered that of its owner. Handpicked from the menagerie if she had to guess. She wouldn't be surprised to find he'd gotten himself onto a waiting list til they found one grouchy enough.

His question pulled her from her visual sweep of the room, back to him where he sat at his table. Not an ounce of urgency in trying to give her her book back. Wow. Brilliant.

"No, Professor." Nothing else to discuss. Her answer was short, but polite enough. "I've got a potion to check on, test subjects to feed and don't reckon you're too keen to have me sticking around your office anyway." No need to beat around the bush; neither of them wanted her there, and she was perfectly fine with that.

When she didn't come in, Noble followed her gaze to his familiar. Funnily enough, Noble hadn't chosen his cat. It had somehow found its way into his possession after his actual familiar, an energetic and bright-eyed crup, had taken a strong liking to his ex-wife, and therefore had gone with her in the divorce. A sore spot to be sure. "She doesn't bite," he grunted. "Much too lazy to even come get petting." In case she wasn't a fan of cats. Or was it because of him she wouldn't come closer?

Regardless, she'd have to come in eventually if she wanted her book. Noble wasn't going to get up to pass it to her, although he could throw it, he supposed. He didn't have a bad arm; he occasionally bowled at his daughter to help her cricket practice. Probably wouldn't do much for the book though. "Funny, I don't remember seeing anything brewing in the lab on my last pass through," he said pointedly.

She didn't bite? ".....Okay." She wasn't entirely sure why the man would offer up that bit of information, leaving her unsure how to really respond. There wasn't any relief, as she hadn't been apprehensive about the feline in the first place.....but she felt she needed to say something so the man wouldn't accuse her of being rude.

Any reason to keep her from having her book, eh?

"Good to know?" Yes? Was that the appropriate response? Regardless, the Ravenclaw remained firmly planted at the door, having formed this habit from her very first year. She never entered the offices of Professors--save her Head of House's whose she'd had to visit so many times and had long since become desensitized to. It was much like any other classroom now....just...smaller. Enclosed spaces were not her friends. Best remain at the door where her anxiety could be kept in check.

As for no potions brewing in the lab...."I don't suspect you would've unless someone else decided to do some extra brewing." Which...how many really did? "All my extra brewing gets done up in my own lab where I'm less likely to be disturbed and won't have to share the space with anyone potentially clumsy or distracting." He'd seen Zoryn and Derf earlier in the day, that statement needed no further explanation.

"I left it simmering before dinner. It'll need stirring in a bit so I'm in something of a time crunch, if you don't mind."

Was it good to know? He gave a small shrug as he stood and turned to pull a book from his bookshelf. Not hers. Just one he needed for preparing tomorrow's lesson. He flicked through it idly, still waiting for her to actually enter.

"Well apparently you're doing some extra brewing...just my fully stocked laboratory, set up to my own specification, isn't good enough for you." His gazed fixed on her now over the book, his brow furrowing. Because, no, he didn't buy into her reasoning of not sharing the space. There were ways round that that didn't mean avoiding the watchful gaze of the potion master. It was suspicious. Highly suspicious.

"Why do you get your own personal, private laboratory? What makes you so special?" Because going on what she handed in today, she wasn't as good as she thought she was.

And no, he didn't care in the slightest that she was in a time crunch. Because it wasn't his lab that would get ruined. Funny that.

There was nothing she could do about the twitch when she realized the man would, indeed, drag this out for as long as he wanted. How hard was it to hand over her book? A brief look down at her watch told her she had 7 minutes to get back to her lab on the sixth floor; doable if she ran like hell and the didn't have too much interference from the staircases.

Oh. Six now. Dammit.

If she was beginning to look restless, it was the fault of that second glance toward her watch. Oh Merlin. It'd been two weeks in the making and had some time ahead of it yet. Oh Merlin. "It's not." There was no use beating around the bush when it came to her preference in labs, but it might not have been for reasons he was thinking. Yours is up to your specifications. Mine is built to mine." As it so happened, the two were vastly different. "I've got a certain....setup going on in mine and countless documents I can pull for and cross reference on hand as needed. Plus it allows me to keep an eye on my test subjects while I brew."

No point taking them all down to the dungeons with her to brew, then having to haul them all back up to her lab when she was done. Not to mention access whenever she wanted and no prying eyes. Professor Hirsch was well brief on all her experiments, she didn't need another Professor offering up unsolicited condemnation. Professor Wayland and Mr. Kennedy had been proof enough that her experiments weren't likely to be received well, so she would continue to keep them to herself.

Five and a half minutes.

Could she conjure a broom? FLY to her lab? At this rate, it was her only hope. She hadn't anticipated this taking quite as long as it was. This was a simple book pick up, not necromancy for Circe sake!

Jessa blinked at his question, positive it was meant to be a slight in relation to her skill level. What...made her special..........? "Nothing." She replied simply, not at all appreciative of his tone. "And I didn't get a lab. It wasn't handed to me for good behaviour or anything of the sort. I needed a space to get things done. I found an old, disused classroom and I took the initiative. Over time, it took on a life of its own." And an impressive life at that. Her own little solitude to learn without judgement.

He snapped the book in his arms shut, placing it on the desk and running his fingers along the spines on his shelf as he looked for the next. He didn't see her glance at her watch, but it wouldn't have surprised him at all to find out she was getting angsty at the time.

A certain setup? Noble's cheek twitched. Whilst he couldn't fault that everyone had their own preferred working space, he didn't like the way she said it. One might think that having a certified master potioneer nearby, one with countless years research experience, one that could be called upon for useful discussions when things went wrong, would be much more useful than a stack of documents. Not that books were inherently bad, he had several walls full of them, after all. Just the fact that she hadn't bothered to come to him irked Noble no end, and he couldn't help thinking that was a bad sign indeed. Especially with the mention of test subjects.

"Whilst I laud your ambition in setting up your own space, I'm disappointed that you refuse to use the best resources available to you."
Of that he was certain, even without knowing what her so-called experiments were on. "And that makes me question certain things." Like whether he should even be considering giving this book back to her.

Three minutes, twenty seconds.

Jessa jutted her jaw a bit, watching the man move with no particular urgency, already knowing her potion was lost. At least a million colourful words flooded her mind at the realization, the most frustrating thought being that there was no longer anything she could do about it. The smarter thing to do would have been to head back to her lab, wait out the time then make the trip back down but she'd already been so close to the dungeons, she didn't think anything of it.

Her mistake, honestly, and a costly one at that. Would she be getting her book back at all??? His questioning of other things hinted otherwise and she didn't like it one bit.

"With all due respect Professor." She started, trying to push the image of the soon to be discoloured solution bubbling upstairs from her mind. "I do have the best, courtesy of my father, if equipment's what's got you so sketched on the idea." Jessa took her experiments seriously, even if most didn't. She'd been managing just FINE. The Professor being hired didn't suddenly make her think she needed any more help from him than she did her other three or four Potions Professors.

"I collect the dead as fresh as I can get 'em and search hard to find ones in varying stages of decay." Not that...that...really mattered anymore. "My rats are fresh from the dungeons and know the area well. The plants are handled with care for as much as I can help it and when I need ingredients, I check the storage cupboard in the main potions lab and log everything I've taken." In the event she considered that need to know, she had them owled in by her father. The years of being left alone had given her a certain independence when it came to what she learned. Outside of checking in with Professor Hirsch occasionally, Jessa had become conditioned to leaving others out.

With all due respect? See, starting with that never gave the impression of actual respect, did it? Noble turned and frowned at her obliviousness, and, honestly, her naivity. "I did not mean your equipment, no." Much could be done with the most basic of tools, as long as one knew how to improvise and account for their limitations. So, no, he was not talking about equipment.

The girl definitely had an attitude problem when it came to her potions work, and clearly needed to learn the art of collaboration. She'd get nowhere in the field without it. Getting funding for projects relied on it.

"I believe you just admitted to stealing from my store cupboard, Prefect," Noble replied, his face sour. Signing the log book did not constitute permission in Noble's view, especially if the ingredients weren't being used in his lab or for school work. He had a limited budget to be used for all of the pupils in his classroom, after all. It wasn't fair on them. And don't get him started on the rats...or whatever else her 'test subjects' were. Hopefully not students, although at least they could consent. The alternative was probably worse. Any sort of animal testing was a highly regulated area, and certainly not appropriate for a student to be undertaking alone. He should know, he'd had to fill out the Ministry paperwork more than once, and host all the subsequent inspections. There was no way a makeshift lab was suitable.

...and that was without considering the views of the other students. Some of them had already made it known in lessons how against the use of animals in brewing they were.

Thinking about that was what made his decision.

"This stops, and it stops NOW." There was a clear finality to his tone. "I expect your laboratory to be dismantled by the weekend. I've been looking for a space for the Latin club to call their own, so consider your previously 'disused' classroom now definitively used for school purposes, and appropriated." And he would find it, even if he wasn't certain where her lab was right now. He hadn't ventured much into the upper floors since his return as staff, but he'd been quite the explorer in his student days. It shouldn't be too difficult to find, with a spell or two if necessary. "Should you wish to continue your experiments, you can do so in my laboratory in direct consultation in with me, if and ONLY if I consider them appropriate to do on school grounds."

He looked at her, still standing in the doorway, too rude to come in, his gaze steely. "Have I made myself clear?"

Jessa wrinkled her nose at the idea of stealing, because she wasn't a thief and she'd never been one. "It's standard practice." She countered. "That's how it's always been." Why were there suddenly so many more rules now that he was professor? Why was he so hell bent on changing everything?

But she didn't dwell on it. No. Her brain seemed to tune it out just as quickly as it had first interpreted it. In its place, a hollow ringing in her ears as everything else seemed to grow quiet. For a long time, it didn't feel like her mouth would open to reply. Try as she might, no words would come out and despite several attempts, her parted lips simply closed again. Her lab, three years in the making, fully supported and endorsed by her Head of House and he thought....he wanted to....he figured.....

...

......

"No." Her tone was deceptively calm when she finally did manage the words. Jessa Cambridge was not, nor had she ever typically been a willful girl, usually able to swallow whatever was dished out to her and not make a fuss....but this was her lab. It was her baby. She'd risen undead birds in there. She brewed poisons in there. All the files she'd ever created now resided in there. All her diagrams, her charts, her test subjects.....

She'd fought too hard. Just no.

"I don't have to run experiments by you. I have the approval of my Head of House who's well briefed and has already given me consent. I don't need to brew in your lab and I don't need anything I'm doing vetted by you." An uncomfortable fire had been lit under her, leaving her more incensed than most had ever seen her. Her lab was about the only thing she cared for in this entire castle.

"I won't dismantle it just because you decided the Latin club needs somewhere to meet, in fact you can and should take this up with Professor Hirsch so he can fill you in and get you up to speed. I have permission and it's not the sort you can revoke. You can't do that." Jessa took a deep breath, willing herself to be remain calm. "I'd like my book, please." She'd been here long enough and by now could do very little about the way she shook. She did NOT take kindly to having her experiments stop or people telling her when and what she could study.

"It is standard for those working in the potions laboratory...which you are clearly not. Currently you're taking resources from my students who are working within the rules, and I don't accept that." It wasn't his fault if the previous professors ran a slack ship and let her get away with it. This was his domain now, and, despite popular opinion, he wanted to support his students that chose to use the potions lab, whether for remedial brewing or expanding their horizons. It was her choice not to be a part of that, not to get him on board before this point. "And if we kept things the way they'd always been, things would never progress." Which really begged the question...why did she do so many experiments if she wanted things to stay the same?

For now he just watched her. Waiting to see how she would respond. Any sensible child would have bartered right about now, asking if they could have had some space of their own in his lab. Recognised his tutelage might not be so much of a hindrance, that his was a reference letter worth having for the future, that he had contacts in university labs. He might have even compromised, and granted protected space, shelves for books. But, of course, none of those things came out of her lips, and Noble felt his blood pressure rising.

No?

........no?

Oh, she was so very, very wrong.

"I can do that, and I just did." His tone was as curt and stern as it had ever been. He meant business. "I am the Potions Master in this school, not Professor Hirsch. I will not be going to find him on your behalf, but I will be going to the Headmistress about your tiresome insolence." She was a Prefect after all, and certain standards were expected of them. With that he took her book from where it laid under some paperwork on his desk from reading it earlier, and locked it safely away in his desk drawer. "You'll get this back when I think you deserve it."

"...In the meantime, I suggest you consider your next actions very carefully, very carefully indeed."

A plan for her detention was already forming in his mind if she didn't.

It was all she could do not to roll her eyes. Taking from those who decided to brew in the lab? How many students actually put in the extra potions work and when had it become a rule it needed to be done in the lab? Weren't the ingredients for all the students? Sounded like a convenient little clause if you asked her. One he was using to justify his otherwise senseless ire.

"My experiments span, far beyond potions." His reminder he was "Potions Master" at the school did very little to make her budge. Her experiments were heavily charms dependent and supplemented by potions to give them distinction. He wasn't at the top of her list of people she needed approval for, in fact she could still do most all her experiments without potions and it wouldn't be too much skin off her back, so no, she didn't accept it.

The only trouble came in a few potions she'd been brewing that she'd NEEDED at this point, but he didn't get to have a say in her brewing them either.

The mention of the Headmistress only served to cause a spike in her level of agitation. Unnecessary agitation. She'd only come for her book.....her book that she was now being told she wouldn't be getting until he felt...she...deserved it....? So...basically...that book would never be returned to her possession and she would have to ask her father to owl her a new one copy. Noted.

Blue eyes glossed over the desk before rising to him again. There was firm resolve in them but she went silent. His mind seemed perfectly made up, but now so was hers.

She was keeping her lab.

Yay, Hamlet! • Cathopper • Disney Fanatic • I was normal once...

Flynn Kowalski had been minding his own business as he made his way through the dungeons and to the staircase so that he could go get himself a snack from the kitchens before his next class started. It was safe to say he had been minding his own business until he heard the faint voice of Jessa Cambridge coming from around the corner up ahead, and was that Professor Noble's voice? He was curious....

.... very curious. Was she in trouble?

He stood close to the corner, out of their view, and listened in an attempt to catch parts of the conversation. The only parts he had heard were about not getting something back and.... and.... something about her experiments? THAT didn't sound good.

The Slytherin had to sit there to decide just how much he liked Jessa, knowing darn well they've had their ups and downs over the years, but he also knew she liked her experiments. In her defense, she had helped him during a rough time last year.... but she had also threatened him a few days ago.

HM.

HMMMM.

Okay, Cambridge, we got you.

He came up with an idea on the spot and cleared his mind. After a moment or two, a panicked look spread across his face, and he came running around the corner. HEAVY BREATH, KOWALSKI. HEAVY BREATH. He kneeled over, pretending to catch his breath, before saying, "The potion.... the p-potion lab.... a c-caldron blew u-up....." CATCHING HIS BREATH! ".... a f-first year is h-hurt."

Acting was what he did best, yeah?

Was that meant to be a threat? "Then Hirsch is more of a moron than I thought," Noble muttered under his breath and shaking his head. He'd taken the liberty of flicking through her book before dinner, and its unusual topic matter, at least for her age group, had given him some insight into her interests. It wasn't a surprise she was doing more than potions, but it did help confirm some of his suspicions.

The lab was going; he'd make sure of it.

He saw her gaze move over to the desk, and his lip curled into a half-smirk. If she continued the way she was going, there was no chance the book would be back in her possession by the end of the academic year, not alone Christmas. Nope, it'd be staying right there in his locked drawer, protected by both magic and key.

He was about to tell her about his detention plans, when Flynn rounded the corner and heavy breathing drew his attention. He grunted at the Prefect's message, before turning to fix his gaze once more on Jessa. "It will be gone by the weekend," he repeated. His tone heavily suggested that if she didn't do it, he would. Although, luckily for her, it seemed any thoughts of detention had been swept aside, his mind now on more pressing matters. She could consider herself dismissed.

Noble tugged the door to his office closed as he stepped out into the corridor and made a move towards the laboratory. "Did you see which potion they made such a doxy's ear of, by chance?" Merlin knew how they'd managed to blow up a cauldron so quickly...he'd given the lab a glance over on his way to dinner, and there hadn't been a brew in sight.

He liked doing that didn't he? Speaking with a tone of finality, thinking it meant she would fall in line and comply. Normally this would be the case, but if she fought for nothing else, she would fight for this.

The most incredulous part of it all might have been that he'd never told her WHY she would suddenly have to put an end to years of hard work. Quite out of the blue he simply said it needed to stop then proceeded to take on the role of dictator for a country she didn't remember obtaining citizenship. Naturally this would have to be a no.

"It wo--"

Huh? Jessa turned at the sound of thundering feet heading in her direction, ridiculously surprised to find Flynn there panting as if he'd just seen a ghost. Only thing was...........Flynn didn't run.....especially not because someone else's lab was blown up and some First Year was involved--come to think of it....why did Flynn care? This was the same guy she'd threatened days earlier, yeah? The one who admitted to only thinking of his self....? Same Flynn? Flynn Kowalski?

The Ravenclaw's eyebrows arched with both curiosity and disbelief. There was no way. She wouldn't believe it for a second. Flynn shoved First Years into walls to move them out of his way. He didn't see them make a mess and try to help them. For her part, Jessa remained silent while her co-Prefect was questioned. She would wait patiently to begin her own interrogation.

HEAVY BREATHING.

HEAVVYYYY BREATHINGGGG.

.....

Flynn pretended to have caught his breath but continued to stay bent over for a few more following seconds. He watched Professor Noble close the door, but it did not seem he locked it though. Straightening his position, he glanced quickly over to Jessa before looking back at the Professor, who was making his way to the non-existent accident. He already knew he was going to be in so much trouble, but he owed Jessa an apology and a thank you from last term. Then he could possibly go back to the disliking her part of this tolerate/dislike relationship they had going on now.

He shook his head in response to that question but also added a vocal response, "I did not, sir." Because he could not think of a potion off the top of his head right now that only a first year would know how to make. "I'll go get the Healer though in case they need medical assistance...." He was NOT about to follow the man to an accident that never even happened. NOPE. NO WAY.

His eyes drifted over to Jessa, but he was not saying anything yet since Professor Noble was still in view.

Of course he hadn't noticed what the potion was, nor had the sense to at least describe it. Noble grunted again. "I'll message Healer Macmillan if I need her. Go back to whatever you were doing." Presumably patrolling, since he didn't believe the Slytherin Prefect would willingly go brew in the lab of his own accord so soon after dinner. It was a shame, Flynn could probably be a decent potioneer if he spent as much time studying as he did being impertinent and cocky in class. And if Jessa had any sense, she'd scarper and be on the opposite side of the castle before he returned.

What was it with the Prefects this year? He'd had to discipline the Head Boy in class today too. Strewth.

Noble's focus for now though was the first year with the potions accident. There was a deep frown on his face as he hurried down the corridor, his wand already in hand and robes flowing behind him.

Jessa stood, arms folded behind her back in casual fashion while the man headed further and further down the corridor. For now, she had nothing to say, biding her time with her Co-Prefect until the point she could no longer see Professor Noble.

Then, very patiently, she turned to look at Flynn. A second passed with her just giving him a once over before, "What do you think you're doing??????" She demanded in a frantic half whisper, keeping her voice low in case the man had no indeed gone far but was instead waiting in the next corridor for them to slip up.

She lifted a brow at him, allowing herself to be openly skeptical.

The story didn't add up. The man was gone and Flynn was still standing here. Sure the Professor had said he would fetch the Healer if needed and suggested they go back to what they were doing but if Flynn was as concerned as he wanted the running to imply he was then...why hadn't he insisted on following the man back to the lab?

Go back to whatever you were doing.

As IF he had been doing anything, except slacking off, Cranky Man.

Flynn watched Professor Noble disappear down the corridor, and the smirk he had managed to hold back formed upon his lips..... but then Jessa had to go and ruin everything with her questioning. Your Ravenclaw was showing, Cambridge. "Helping? I heard the tail-end of your conversation, and it sounded like he took something of yours." He paused, knowing she was going to ask a certain question, so he went ahead and added, "I'm playing my nice card since you helped me last year." So don't expect him to be nice to her again after today - or after the next 10 minutes, even.

His eyes kept glancing down the corridor where the man had disappeared."I'm guessing we have about five minutes before he comes back, and he won't be happy when he comes back." As if the man was EVER happy, so there was a correction that needed to be made: "More unhappy than he usually is."

.... so like.... was his acting wasted or what?

HELPING???

Flynn Kowalski? Helping HER? Were it not for the fact she'd just seen it with her own eyes, Jessa may have laughed in his face but his sentence had just proven it. He'd just told a bold faced lie to Professor Noble and when the man got down to that lab and realized nothing was amiss, he would come back here with blood in his eyes. Did Flynn realize that? Had he thought so far into his plan? Because in the second since he'd explained it, it was ALL she could think about.

He was in trouble. If she walked away right now, she would be in no such trouble and right now she had a lab to think about so she didn't fancy getting drawn in to one of his scatter brained schemes that were sure to end terribly.

He was on his OWN.

...Except. He'd stuck his neck out for her. Was he trying to make amends for being a royal jerk? He did say it was thanks for the previous year (good to know he still remembered that) but Circe this had to be the DUMBEST THING EVER. "When we leave here, we're going to the sorting hat. It made a mistake, you bloody Gryffindor." This was the HEIGHT of stupidity, and if he thought about it long enough he'd realize it too.

"Five minutes might be enough." She allowed. He was in a world of trouble because of her. The least she could do was not throw it back in his face, because you know what? This had to be the ONLY act of solidarity she'd ever seen from this Slytherin and it made this situation feel like one of those where it might have been more worth it to stick together. Reaching out, she tried the door, surprised when it actually budged. So then...not locked with magic as he stepped away. Merlin. "We'll make this quick." Even if deep down she KNEW this was wrong.

Flynn had already messed up. It had already gone bad. If they could get something out of this and not make it a total waste then why not? A nudge told her it wouldn't be moving much further without effort. Of course. Nothing was ever easy with this man. Jessa huffed, drawing her wand and forcing it properly open by animating it to do just that. There.

Oh, if Jessa Cambridge only knew.

Flynn Kowalski remembered back when he was a little child, walking into the Great Hall for the first time. He remembered having the hat placed upon his head, but most importantly, he remembered arguing with that rusty piece of headwear about what house he belonged in. The hat had seem bravery in him, but there was also self-preservation and determination. He would of done well in both houses, but ultimately, he won the argument.

"If you hurry," he informed her. He had not even though enough ahead to have a plan in case they get caught.... even better, he didn't have a plan on where to run to once Jessa retrieved what was taken from her. To be honest, he had half-expected Professor Noble to force him to go to the non-existent accident with him, so he did not even expect to get this far.

But AYE, pat on the back for him.

He watched as his co-prefect pushed the door open, and he said, "I'll stand guard." It was the perfect job for him.

Right. He'd stand guard. Well she supposed it was for the best. If the door had been that difficult, she could only imagine how much more difficult the drawer would've been. Leave him to deal with it and they'd be caught for sure. "Just...cough if you see him coming, got it?"

Jessa took a deep breath, realizing she didn't have time to waste. For the moment, she would have to put aside her discomfort understatement at entering such a closed space. The door...would remain open. She would just have to convince herself that everything was fine and nothing tragic would happen. The Ravenclaw looked straight at the desk, not allowing her gaze to waiver to either side.

Consciously she made every effort to forget the setting and ignored the way the walls seemed to be closing in around her with that ONE exit back the way she came. Keep calm Jessa.

At the drawer, she gave it a hard tug, but it wouldn't move. Why did nothing move with this man???????? "Locked!" She huffed, getting down on her knees to get a better look. She didn't know what charm he may or may not have put on the lock so tampering with it seemed the less wise option......which....meant......

Again, Jessa drew her wand. This time, she began working on essentially drilling out an opening on the inside wall of the drawer that rested below the desk's surface. Focus on the task. Don't think about the space. Focus on the wall, don't think about the space. Almost there....and........."I got it open!"

It hadn't taken too long to realise he'd been conned. There wasn't a single person in the lab, not alone a first year in need of any medical help. He'd swooped around the lab just to check that they hadn't done a runner, checking for a still warm cauldron or burner.

Nope, nothing.

A skim through the logbook confirmed it. No one had signed in since lunchtime.

A scowl already on his face, and nostrils flaring, Noble stomped out of the lab, letting the door slam shut behind him. Flynn Kowalski had for some reason tried to get the better of him. It was a risky business messing with Noble at the best of times, but it was particularly poor timing after the meeting he'd just had with the Ravenclaw Prefect.

Just what was the Slytherin up to that needed him away from his office? He certainly planned to find out, and fast.
