Default Laundry Room

Ever wonder where your dirty underpants wind up? Just down the corridor, not terribly far from the kitchen, the door to the laundry room can be found. What you will find in this room will, likely, not be a surprise. Within are no Muggle washing machines or dryers. Instead, front and centre, are large tubs with accompanying wash boards and sticks. A bizarre system of clothes lines fill the back of the room, beside which tables and large hampers await.

If you happen to wind up here on your House's laundry day, you will see your clothes -- hopefully labelled -- and the clothes of your fellow housemates being washed and dried by a team of house-elves. It is not uncommon to hear them bickering with each other or joining together in a motivational song to help make the job get completed quicker. First the clothes are scrubbed squeaky clean with soap and steaming hot water. They are next hung to dry and then neatly stacked on one of the large tables to be folded and placed back in the hamper to be returned to their owners.

Students are always welcome to be proactive and do their own laundry or at least lend the house-elves a hand. There sure is a lot of laundry to do!

The laundry room! That seemed like a perfectly logical place to make her soap. It wasn’t too far away from the potions laboratory, in case something disastrous happened, but far enough away that Professor Noble shouldn’t be poking around. She carried her supplies into the room, held in a large canvas tote. Her cauldron holding the liquid filled vials and other soap making supplies in case one were to spill on her journey. She glanced around the room and spotted an empty corner, hoping she wouldn’t be in the way. “Is this okay?” she asked the house elves, gesturing to her supplies “I need to make a quick batch of soap for my herbology assignment.” She smiled brightly at the house elves “I’ll clean up my mess and you won’t even know I was here.” Emmalyn assured them. It wasn’t their responsibility to clean up after her.

She reached into her canvas bag and pulled out her cauldron, placing it upon the ground, making sure it was level. She did not want to spill a drop. Next, she pulled out her instructions and read over them, three times, to make sure she knew what she was supposed to do before starting. She had read that said not to let the ingredients sit too long or it wouldn’t work. She set out all of her ingredients were lined up in order of addition and removed the stoppers and caps. “Here we go.”

After taking a deep breath to steady her nerves, making any sort of potion was always stressful for her, she poured in the lye and water mixture, followed by the coconut oil and lime essential oil. Before they had long to sit, she picked up her wand and commanded “Sape Jago!” while giving her wand a quick flick at the cauldron. Her eyes widened as she watched and waited for the spell to work. At first, she thought she had cast the spell incorrectly, but before she could start again, she noticed a change happening. “It’s working” she whispered as she watched the magic happen. Suddenly a crisp white bar of soap appeared in the bottom of her cauldron. The smell was lovely. Like a day at the beach. The coconut and lime combination were the perfect match.

Emmalyn carefully removed her bar of soap from the cauldron and wrapped it in waxed paper before placing it on the ground. She then recapped and stoppered all of her containers before packing them away in her bag. She was very through in making sure every last bit of her mess and any evidence of her being in the laundry room had been removed. Just before leaving, she turned back to the house elves, hard at work, and said “Thank you for allowing me to work in here. And, thank you for all you do for us.” She gave a little wave and headed out the door.
