Junia took a few minutes to write down what Healer Reed had shared about the potion before thinking about her answer. Ideas having to do with this potion being restorative seemed the most likely and the brunette was inclined to agree, though she wanted to offer up something different...but what?

...

Oh, the boy from the herb garden was talking about the antimony. The fifth year perked up a bit, noting what he said about it being dangerous. That much was true, but that meant.."If this is meant to be a healing potion and Antimony can be toxic, surely something else within the potion has to make it less so. Maybe counteract the negative effects of it."

Hunter's eyed got widened the more he looked around himself. Older peoples, many of them, he wanted to ask for help but no voice came out of throat when he tried to speak. Everyone in the place doing their work intimidated the little boy and he hated the feeling of it. He wanted to join in but the more he looked around himself, the more he started at the board trying to read what he was supposed to do again, the more overwhelmed he started to feel.

He wanted to go to his brother, but that weird ghost thing was around him. Was it hurting his bro? Hunter narrowed his eyes wondering how he would be able to protect his brother from a creepy ghost. He couldnt do anything to a ghost, right? Cause anything he would try would pass right into him to the other side, right? So he wouldnt have been able to protect his brother. Another reason to add to his overwhelmed status.

The boy's eyes got wide as the tears he was holding back started to appear in them.

No no no.

He couldnt cry like a kitten who left his mom early.

Noooo...

He would be humiliated in the middle of all the older students. His brother would be ashamed of him. The professor would think he wasnt fit to take this class and even throw him out.

Also the place was weird. Why a dungeon?

No, he had to focus on what the healer / professor was saying so he wouldnt cry. He had to do something so he would be a big boy who participated in the class. What was the question again? Oh yea what kind of potion. HE DIDN'T KNOW. Even though he tried to hold it quite hard, a single tear escaped his right eye.

She raised an eyebrow when he paused for suspense after he said he disagreed. Oh maybe... maybe she totally read it all wrong. She started to panic internally for a brief hot sec until he said that he thought they made a GREAT team. Cue Vi's cheeks turning pinker than before as well as the butterflies that flapped their wings in her stomach. She blamed him for making her all blushy and all of that. He got her so well.... A bright smile lit up her face and she shared it with him and him alone.

Then Professor Reed was speaking about the task at hand. A mystery potion, hey? They'd get to guess it? This sounded fun. Time to put on that inspector's cap. Merlin. Now she wished she could have phoned in a friend or two and gotten her brother and his best friend to help deduce the potion. But instead, it'd be up to her. She wrote down the ingredients in her notebook and then glanced at the words. Alright. Well she knew Dittany was used in to heal... It could make new skin cover a wound. It could heal a scar.... Stargrass.. She was going to take a random guess... Healing properties too? Fire seeds... warming...? Wiggenbark also had healing properties... Antimony was dangerous and toxic.

She was about to offer a comment about the potion being like the Wiggenweld potion (it had many similar ingredients) but she soon became distracted by what Junia had spoken pertaining to the Antimony. Vi raised her hand, intrigued by this present discussion immensely. "Perhaps the fire seeds would be used to reduce the toxicity of the antimony. Maybe adding heat is a way to make it less toxic?" she supposed. "Though heating the antimony could make it a toxic vapor...." So yes, how was the antimony and fire seeds supposed to play a role? And would these two interact? Hmm..

"Hold on to that information, Ms Kemp."
It was hard to come down from the excitement Maddie had experienced with the scavenger hunt, but she somehow did it. She was back in her chair and fighting the urge to twirl around and around in it. There was nothing she could do about her tapping feet, though. "Oh, I did! Katy is an amazing partner, and super, duper smart with potions!" she exclaimed. As far as partners go, Katy was top notch, she was. "Sure will, Professor Healer Reed!"

Maddie's excitement seemed to die down as the lesson took on a serious tone. Well, maybe not so serious, but that list up there was deep stuff for a first year. She had no idea what kind of potion they were making. She didn't even know what half of those ingredients were used for.

She was also just a LIIIIIIIITTLE distracted by the random woman in the back of the room unrolling parchment and jotting down notes. Who was she anyway? Maybe it was Professor Healer Reed's wife. That was probably it! Maddie accepted that answer as the correct one then turned her attention back to the list.

Maddie raised her hand. "Is it something to help wake us up in the mornings and feel fresh and revived?" she asked. It suddenly occurred to her that there were a few choice questions she should pay attention to. One being whether or not the antimony was poisonous, and the other being--who was manning the Hospital Wing? Having so many things to think about at once was keeping Maddie still, and for the time-being, she'd stopped fidgeting and tapping her foot.

That's what partners did??

NOT that his partner was excellent, but he was beTTER THAN SOME -- that some being the ones who took so LONG to get what they needed, wow oH WOWWWWW.

OH OH OH. Beau wanted to have a GUESS. His hand SHOT UP right into the air and it WAVED AND WAVED AND WAVED until he was called on. HELLO PROFESSOR HEALER MAN. All these other kids had suggestions like healing and blah blah blah but that was SO obvious because the Professor was the HEALER of the school -- actually, who was his deputy if something happened to him or he was teaching??? The thought ended up being his answer, because he'd forgotten exactly what he had wanted to say.

"HEY. Who helps people get BETTER if you're HERE. Teaching ME?!" Yeah. WHO?! Who was it??? HMMMM??? Surely not ALL of their Professors knew EVERYTHING about magic othERWISE they could ALL teach ALL of the subjects and thAT WOULD BE BORING.

Maybe that was why the LIBRARIAN was teaching them about the STARS.

He'd OBVIOUSLY read a book.

............ Did that mean Beau didn't need to go to classes??????????!

Urgh. He hated that he got that wrong. How stupid could he be? HONESTLY, it was so obvious now that Healer Reed had meant per person, which made it even more annoying to the Hufflepuff. It wasn’t exactly as if they could split 5 seeds in half. Annoyed at himself, although happy to see that Beau didn’t seem too worried, Remy sat and waited until everyone else came back. Urgh. Oh well, moving on - he’d just have to make the perfect potion with the younger boy.

Oh, perfect. Look at that, the ingredients. Opening his notepad to today’s labelled lesson, the Seventh year looked over the ingredients after he had writen them done.. He nodded along with some of the other suggestions they had given - especially giving Ace a grin at his answer, how cool would that be? - and then nodded a little more as toxicity was mentioned. Very nice, very nice. Noting allll of this down.

Looking at Beau, he shot him a grin when he asked what happened if he got ill while the Healer was teaching - he’d assume they would simply interrupt the class if it was an emergency… but he was curious about the answer nonetheless. Oh… Actually… “Do the toxin’s in the potion help to combat toxic poisons that are attacking your body? Perhaps through penetrative wounds like Ace mentioned?”

Honestly, he had no idea past restorative potions of some form - and he should probably know this by now. Which was annoying… but he didn’t seem to be having the best day today.. Which was sad, since it had started off with a fantastic run around the grounds as the sun had risen. Oh well, it would get better again. He knew it would.

Default Addy Hutchinson

Well THIS was interesting. Addy listened to some of the questions the kids had and frowned a bit. One girl in particular seemed to be having a MOMENT. The Bellaire kid, that was. Tut, tut. Not tutting at the child, that is, the Healer got the mental tutting. Listening more intently she focused her eyes on the parchment, ears open for what was going on around the room. The Ravenclaw in her wanted to participate in this lesson as well, but the teacher and mother in her wanted to teach people the proper way to do things.

But.

For now she had a different task at hand. More evaluating.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS OBSERVATION
Observer: Who is observing the lesson?
Jacklyn "Addy" Hutchinson
Professor: Who is teaching the lesson?
Healer River Reed
Subject: What subject does this lesson fall under?
Potions
Topic: What is the concept students will learn about over the course of this lesson?

How to brew a potion of (as of yet) undetermined origin.
Objective: What are the 1 or 2 student learning objectives/goals that will be measured in this lesson?

Launch: How does the professor get the lesson started? What technique(s) did he/she use to engage students?
I understand that the Healer wanted to do something "fun" to start the lesson... but I found it a bit careless. He set up a scavenger hunt for them all to find fireseeds, stargrass, and Betony leaves. While I think it is a neat idea, I think that the likelihood of injury or contamination was too great. I have yet to see one student wash their hands since they came in. They have all gone to their workstations and thus contaminated all of their equipment.

Waiting to see if the Healer has them wash up since he had them do it before they left the room.

Instruction: How do diverse students engage with ideas/texts to develop their own understanding; what guiding questions does the professor ask; how is the professor promoting question generation/discussion; what activities are the students performing? In short, outline the lesson as you observe it.
-Starts lesson by directing them to leave the room to discover missing ingredients
-Has asked them all what kind of potion they think they might be brewing today after giving them a list of ingredients.
-Seems to be encouraging free thinking.
- The students are expressing that the directions for gathering ingredients were unclear. Healer Reed seems to think they were clear, but mentioned a "contingency plan". Why was that needed if he was clear? Will see how this unfolds.
Closure: How does the professor bring closure to the lesson?

Glows: What are 1-3 areas that the professor did well as observed in this lesson?

Grows: What are 1-3 areas that the professor can improve on in the future?

Phew…they were back into potions classroom with their gathered potions supplies just just before Healer Reed was ready to move them on to the actual brewing. Cassie settled back at her workstation once more, depositing her pail and bag within reach so they were ready when needed. As for the list of ingredients that appeared on the board, the Ravenclaw copied them down onto a clear sheet of parchment to begin her work notes, looking them over as her fellow students began guessing on the potential potion they were going to be working on. The consensus seemed to be healing potion and she had to agree.

Two of the three ingredients they had retrieved had been found within the healing garden after all.

Zoryn settled back in her place at her work station, giving Théo a thumbs up. They did SUCH a great job. Who knew that the kitchen had SO many potions ingredients!!!

And they may not have won exactly ('cause it actually looked like everyone else had arrived before them), BUT what mattered is that they were super efficient and they made it back SO technically they lowkey won. Anyways, she pulled the ingredients out of her bag and set them on the counter as Professor Healer Reed began addressing the class. What exactly was going on? They were answering questions now?

"Sounds like we're making a salad," 'cause you've got your leaves and your berry juice and rock salt. So everyone who guessed healing potions were probably wrong 'cause if anything salad made Zoryn sick. Ew. Green food in general was g r o s s. Gross.

"Thank you, sir," Katy flashed a grateful glance at the professor before she carefully folded the excess stargrass into parchment paper. She needed to do some reading up on it... and don't think she didn't notice that the professor had to consider giving her the mundane plant. Like she was a newb at potioning or something.

The ingredients list went up on the board, and Katy nodded along with the suggestions that it was a healing potion. Seemed likely, with the inclusion of several specific medicinal plants, plus that Wiggenweld bark. A restorative? The antimony was puzzling, true, but there were often toxic ingredients in potions that were made less dangerous by virtue of inclusion with the right other ingredients. That was the magic of Potions

And this was why Ronan was pretty much a middle-of-the-road potions student. Because he had zero clue as to the effects and interactions these ingredients had. Though, he did know that rock salt was used by muggles to de-ice highways and such. And given that they were also using fireseeds it did make him wonder.....

But, others were mentioning healing properties and he was lost again. So he leafed through the textbook again, looking for a clue. No help there.

So, yeah, he was pretty much clueless here.

The ingredients hunt had definitely done its job of waking Vivian up. In fact, it actually pumped her up for the lesson. Here’s to hoping this bolt of energy was going to suffice in the long run today.

Arriving at their classroom, Vivian looked back at Miss Etta with a wide grin. "We made a great team today, Miss Etta!" The blond felt she needed to let her know. But really, she couldn’t deny they did well together. "Thanks for partnering up with me." And it hopefully wouldn’t be the last time they would, as they were bound to work together again for prefect duties or maybe in some other class. But now, it was time for the actual lesson to happen so Vivian made her way to her work station, and placed her ingredients carefully on top. She was ready for actual brewing to happen now, yes!

And good thing they arrived just in time to catch the Healer's question. Watching the list of ingredients, Vivian made a list of possibilities in her mind. She wasn't sure, to be honest, but she wanted to give it a try. "A healing potion, sir?" A vague answer, she knew, but was going to put it at that.

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta had really enjoyed this activity and the fact that she got to do it with a friend was even more exciting and fun. "You're the best, Vivi. Thanks for partnering up with me too!" She grinned at the other girl, hoping that this wouldn't be the last time. She headed over to her work station, eyeing the ingredients on the board. Hmm. The girl pondered over the question, absently playing with the ends of her hair.

"I feel like it's a Healing potion, professor. Dittany is a restorative, isn't it? And wiggentree bark is supposedly used in healing potions." Etta answered, raising a hand before carefully noting down the ingredients on her parchment. She set her quill down, very curious to know what they'd be learning today.

Settling back into her seat, Skylar was feeling rather appreciative at the moment. All lessons should start with a small amount of exercise; it got the blood flowing to the brain and everything. She offered a small smile of appreciation toward Cassandra too, for the encouragement back in the library, in regards to, harvesting fireseeds. She would need to practice again before June, because last thing she needed was freezing up in the middle of her practical. But for now, she was going to be okay.

Only, that list of ingredients? She had literally NO idea about; her classmates started talking about waking up and restorative properties, which did make some sense to the fifth year. Would it be useful in restoring energy when she felt nauseous every month? Tenacious also mentioned something to do with bleeding and sectumsempra? Actually, that sounded legit...Why was she having this mental block towards thinking of something to contribute to the conversation? She NEVER had this problem before.

Um... um... think, Skylar, think. Rubbing her temple with the end of her quill, she sighed and raised her hand. "Stargrass has mood calming effects, so perhaps it's restorative potion, in that it works similar to a calming draught, but is more ... refreshing."

Sydney returned to the classroom with the missing ingredients. She was definitely awake now - she had to run around a bit to find her way around the castle. Maybe she should have partnered up with a younger kid who knew the way around. Anyways, she was back before the end of the thirty minutes they had been given. Whew!

After dropping her ingredients down on her workstation and washing her hands (did you see that, Board of Governors lady??), the Seventh Year sat back down and listened to Healer Reed. She had no difficulty in focusing now that she was wide awake. In no time, she had noted down the information on the blackboard.

She thought she knew what the answer to his question would be... Essence of Dittany, Wiggentree Bark and Betony Leaves were commonly used in healing potions, so she would guess that they were going to be brewing one such potion! Quite fitting really, considering that their teacher was a Healer. "I agree with them, sir." Sydney said, gesturing at a younger student (Kyle), the Slytherin prefect (Vivian) and Etta, the Hufflepuff prefect. "Healing potion. A lot of the ingredients have healing properties." Okay, so maybe she was not very original, but it seemed like a logical answer to her.

Scavenger hunt was fun, but unfortunately Ava couldn't find all the ingredients that being hidden but at least she got some on her hands now and back on time to the dungeons.

Going back to her seat, the Gryffindor watched Healer Reed wrote all those ingredients and asked them if they knew what they were going to brew. Merlin, her brain somehow couldn't recall anything. Cue mental banging head on the desk right now. But hmmm...... Let's just guessing, right? "I think... we're going to brew some kind of healing potion to cure some certain pain?" Ava spoke up as she raised her hand.

But they're definitely going to brew a healing potion because their potion master was also a healer.

Henry wasn't completely sure they'd be back on time - how much time did they have again? - but they seemed to make it back before Healer Reed started class again, which was a good sign. He arranged his own set of ingredients in a somewhat organized manner once he took his seat next to Remy again and looked up as their teacher began to speak.

Ugh. No. He hated when Professors asked them to deduce from their clues what they'd be doing. Especially in Potions, but maybe that would help him really think like a NEWT student. He could appreciate the reasoning, after all. It did make students really have to think about things and probably made them better in the subject.

And sure, Henry had some ideas about some of the ingredients, but things had been said and he wasn't about repeating answers. Probably had something to do with healing though, but he'd wait to be sure before asking the question forming in his head. And he'd also wait to take notes until these answers were more than just speculation.

"We got a bit extra, Healer Reed, in case anyone needs any or had any mishaps along the way." Or you know, in case they had any mishaps themselves, which they hadn't, but still! Someone might have use for them, right?

And... err... were they late? OH HE WAS TALKING. He wouldn't be maaaaad right?

She put her hand up.

"I have some questions? If that's okay? We weren't sure what pieces meant in regard to the fireseeds? So we got whole fireseeds? But.... was it supposed to be pieces of seeds?"
DID THEY DO IT WRONG? It wasn't clear!
"Same with the Betony leaves, we got whole ones." AND LOL NOPE SHE HAD NO IDEA WHAT THE POTION WAS. Except...... some of those ingredients... Her hand stayed up, wavering slightly before she hesitantly attempted an answer. "Is it a healing potion? Betony is a healing herb... and so is Dittany and Boom Berry is a restorative...? So some kind of restorative potion?"

River opened and closed his mouth, and gestured Char to take her seat the moment she arrived. No harm done, and she wasn't exactly disrupting class. "Thank you, Ms Kettleburn." How thoughtful of her. And then there was that question. "Whole fireseeds, Charlotte. 5 of them." Sometimes...being too clear wouldn't do him any good, apparently.

Moving on, the Healer nodded at Charlotte's answer, "It is a Healing potion, yes. But specifically...what type?" he asked again, moving to the next student.

....that is until he asked that question.

Hmm. Reading over the ingredients, Cameron took a moment to write them down. He was pretty sure he'd never heard of the potion before so he flipped through his textbook in search for it. Or for anything that would give him SOME indication as to what it was. "Wiggentree bark is also used to revive someone. Or wake them up." He finally offered after raising his hand, adding to what Charlotte had said.
"Yes, good good." At least they are familiar with these ingredients.

So he just nodded along to what she asked and pondered over Professor Healer Man's question. Of which, er, he had absolutely no idea whatsoever thus his textbook flipping open and him idly turning pages looking for something - anything - that may help him. He was going to latch on to what Cameron was saying though with Wiggenweld and go from there, mostly because the Slytherin had JUST spoken and thus the Hufflepuff's attention that way. But other did and maaaaaaaybe he could piggy back off some of it? Consensus seemed to be thus far that they were brewing some sort of healing potion though. Restorative and all. "Boom Berry is a fruit!" he offered after a moment with his hand raised. "I think...it pairs with Wiggenweld? Also restorative soooooo...I reckon we're brewing something that...fixes stuff...or maybe wakes us up because morning classes are HARD so...waking up potion..."

.....yes.

Oh some of them really could use a waking up potion. But with the harvesting done, perhaps they wouldn't need it after all. "It does fix stuff, Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne. You're close."

"Is it fine that we brew together then?" She asked, not at all keen on all this leg work. Bless those who woke at odd hours to go jogging around the grounds, she was not one of them.

With the full list of ingredients revealed, Jessa found herself with the same question the Healer Professor had asked. What potion?

Before she could crack open her textbook, answers began pouring out all around her. Things like healing and restoration sticking out. What really got her however was the mention of revival which had the girl now practically bouncing on the seat she'd just taken.

"ARE WE BREWING A POTION THAT RESTORES DEAD ORGANISMS AND RETURNS THEIR DECAYED FORM BACK TO SOMETHING MORE WHOLE AND NORMAL AND NEW??????" It was only after the outburst that the young girl caught herself, hands now firmly clamped over her mouth but blue eyes sparkling like she'd gotten an early glimpse of Christmas.

"I don't mind if they're only sorta restored, just something for dead things?? To make them not look so dead anymore??" There was still the matter of getting the circulatory system going again first but she now had options for that and this class was sounding infinitely more useful to her necromancy study.

Please let it be the answer, please please please.
"Not to worry, Ms Cambridge. Just like what I told Mr Edwards earlier, I do have a contingency plan. For now, let's move on with the lesson." And move on they did...only to have the girl bouncing on her seat next and shouting her answer. Rabid Ravenclaw. It had been years since the last time he saw one of them. "Indoor voice please, Ms Cambridge, thank you." he said reaching out for his right ear. What was up with this...student? River took a moment to digest and analyse the question being thrown at him. "I'm afraid it's not possible to bring back a DEAD organism to its normal or new state with a potion." River paused wondering why she seemed to be so interested with that topic. "Potions can only revive an organism if it still has life." Not even magic can bring the dead back to life like it didn't die at all. Reanimation is another thing...but it's not technically not the same thing.

SPOILER!!: Healer Reed
A couple of minutes later, when all of the students have returned, River went back to the front of the classroom and signaled them that they are ready to continue.

"Now that you have the missing ingredients with you," he said, tapping the blackboard behind him and revealed the complete recipe of today's brew,"What kind of potion do you think we will be brewing in class today?" he continued as he looked at the class. "Your textbooks should give you a clue if you know where to look..." And if they have a strong command in Herbology. "Anyone?"

OOC: We're now moving on to the first question! Catch-up posts ARE ALLOWED / can still be done for the Mini-Activity. If you really can't finish it, it's fine to jump into this portion of the class and play like they already have the missing ingredients with them. We will continue in 24 hours after this post. ^^

Kyle timidly raised his hand. "Stargrass is good for relaxing organs, and boom berry is restorative... Dittany helps heal wounds... Wiggantree bark is used in healing potions... And betony is often used on wounds and sores to help them heal. So, I'm guessing a general health or healing potion."

He was grateful for his dad teaching him about herbology all of a sudden. It gave him a little bit of insight. At least, he hoped he remembered stargrass clearly. He also didn't remember his father using fireseeds in any potions, just that he did have a bush and often harvested them for various other reasons.
Did he just wash his hands without being told to do so? This young man earned himself brownie points!

"Good, very good, Mr Erikson."

Rhea put down her quill and raised her hand. "I also think it probably has healing or restorative purposes." She didn't know enough potions to narrow it down more than that but oh well. She'd know what it was soon enough.

SPOILER!!: Rhea's notes
5 pieces betony leaves / 32g stargrass / 5 pieces fireseeds

➸ Ingredients
50ml Water (distilled)
14ml Antimony (liquefied)
32g Stargrass
302ml Boom Berry Juice
23 drops Essence of Dittany
5 p. Fireseeds
15 p. Pure Rock Salt
5 strips Wiggentree Bark
5 p. Betony leaves (fresh)
"If you look at it closely, it is a healing potion and has restorative effects. If you combine those two aspects, what would it be?" Ms Durant was a Ravenclaw, surely she'll get the answer specifically.

River let out a chuckle and nodded. Some of his patients did feel refreshed after taking it. "You can say that it does, Ms Kemp." Not that he belittled the first year, but it was expected that she will not get the answer correct entirely.

How to brew a potion of undetermined origin.

Closure: How does the professor bring closure to the lesson?

The consensus seemed to be healing potion and she had to agree.

Two of the three ingredients they had retrieved had been found within the healing garden after all.

Some may not know the answer, perhaps some are just too angsty to offer an answer, or some were just bored by all of this. Hopefully, they were still paying attention because this potion is quite interesting. Perhaps, it's a topic that most of them will not be able to tackle unless they decide to pursue the art of Healing in University.

He also took note of the BoGer at the back, taking notes as the lesson went on. River decided to pointedly ignore her presence, having been told not to make a huge deal out of it. Although his appointment as Potions Master was because of the BoG, surprisingly, he wasn't too worried about impressing one of them. He may not do well in teaching, but that wasn't really his problem. He was a Healer after all, not a professor.

Things were getting along well, but then again, he expected something like this. Who even said teaching was easy? River spun around to give Beau a smirk, then walked over to where he sat. "I do have volunteers to do the minuscule legwork at this moment, and I have the portrait of Healers watching these volunteers should they need medical advice. I will be alerted too by the same when there is an emergency." He did not teach the staff basic First Aid for nothing Mr Montague, nor did he ask the Caretaker to move the portraits to the Hospital Wing where they will be beneficial.

Quite a clever move, actually.

To a silly miscommunication??? Her stomach was in knots, didn't they know failing wasn't an option? Julie wanted nothing more than to crawl into a ditch and remain their for the rest of term. Okay, maybe not a ditch- Moaning Myrtle's bathroom, perhaps.

She opened her mouth again, hoping that the argument she'd been mentally preparing in her head would surface but nothing- absolutely nothing. Julie was, for once, speechless. Unceremoniously, she fell into the seat by Jessa and laid her face on the table. Not even the mystery lady with her clipboard could rouse Julie from her angst.
These behaviors, seriously. If he didn't have the heart of a Healer, River would've simply moved along. Pursing his lips, he walked over to where the young lady sat and leaned on to their workstation. "Are you well enough to continue Potions, Ms Bellaire?" he wouldn't take offense if she said no.

Out of the corner of his eye, River saw a young Gryffindor trying to hold himself together. Now...now what did he do this time? Why was he even crying? Did he not enjoy the hunt? Was he hurt? River gave him a quick look over, quite positive that he wasn't hurt. He took a few steps towards the boy and gave his arm a comforting squeeze. "Is everything alright, Mr Carter? Do you need a minute?" he asked almost in a whisper to save Hunter the embarrassment. Again, he wouldn't take offense if the kid needed to get out of the classroom to breathe. Potions wasn't exactly a fun subject...he was trying to make it 'fun' however.

This. This was the reason why it was wise to keep a contingency plan. River had heard of such stories and antics from former professors...even from his former professors regarding such scenarios. The Healer had to keep from face-palming, instead, he took a mental note to talk to Paul about this...and perhaps to keep an eye out for these two. For the sake of moving on with the class, River chose to ignore the issue for now.

Alright now that they were back, the Gryffindor Ace decided to really prep himself properly for the task ahead. Handwashing, reset the headscarf in his hair and make sure his labcoat wasnt tracking any contaminant from when they were going about the castle. Plus scourgify that self stirring pot.

It was then that the Potions Master revealed the rest of the ingredients on the board-- and sprang them their first brain teaser. What is it that they would be cooking making given those ingredients?

Gosh what a time to hit the books. He flipped through his Potions and Herbology textbooks and started to realize something "Professor, over half of these ingredients are meant to treat penetrating trauma-- like lacerations, internal bleeding, that sort of thing. Then there are some key ingredients usually used for Wiggenweld potion too. Are we creating a kind of potion-equivalent to Vulnera Sanentur, which is a spell used to mend laceration victims of Sectumsempra?"
Ah, now they were on to something! Good. Very good, indeed! "Penetrating trauma are the keywords, Prefect Salander." he said pointing to the Gryffindor boy, rather impressed. "The samples you have stated can be healed by both healing magic and potion...and this brew that we are about to make can be simplified by what we call an Antidote." he said turning back to the notes on the blackboard.

But that wasn't going to happen. He needed to focus in order to do his best at the lesson. Giving up won't help him.

He placed the ingredients he collected on the table. He placed the charmed bucket, with the fireseeds, at the corner of his statiom - he didn't want to set class on fire. He crossed his arms and leaned them on the table - he certainly lacked motivation. He sat, sulkily, listening to the Professor.

The Ravenclaw opened his textbook at a random page, and 'looked' to see if there were, as the Professor said, clues. After carelessly turning two pages of the book, he came to the conclusion that his actions weren't benefiting anyone. He gently closed his textbook, and took out of his bag his shared "History of Magic" and "Potions" notebook (he simply writes so little in those to lessons). He began writing down the ingredients on the blackboard.

He observed the list of ingredients that he had written. It caused him to cross his eyebrows, something was peculiar. He was familiar with most of the ingredients, from his mother's store.

Hmm... Liquidated Antimony was the ingredient he was thinking about. He sat up straight in his chair, his eyebrows still crossed, and surprisingly raised his arm. "Ermm.. Sir, whilst some of the ingredients have some sort of ehhh..." he thought for a brief moment,"healing properties. Isn't antimony, er..." he tried to be as secure as possible, but his voice pitched, "dangerous? I think I heard t'is poisonous." It didn't add up in his head, since the potion they will be making will most likely be a healing potion. Maybe this lesson would be, at the very least, interesting after all.

Fireseeds
A very good question! River did a single nod, and tucked his hands behind him. "Antimony itself is toxic even in small amounts, thus, it shouldn't be used alone. You can say that it is a wildcard ingredient, meaning it could make the potion potent as an antidote or otherwise." River took another pause before continuing, "But as you have already eliminated, the rest of the ingredients are restorative in nature, thus it should make the whole brew a very potent antidote-- collectively fighting off toxins within the host." Take notes, kid. He wouldn't be repeating this again.

-5 pieces Fire Seeds
-15 pieces Pure Rock Salt
-5 strips Wiggentree Bark
-5 pieces Fresh Betony Leaves

Notes:
"If that was the case then it would be better to eliminate Antimony, yes?" River's eyes twinkled as he saw the gears of Junia's brain get to work. She was one of his apprentices in the Hospital Wing, and the Healer was delighted to see her justify things. "But in the recipe, it is included. Remember, it is a wildcard ingredient Ms Botros. Never eliminate it as just toxic. It has its benefits too." River was quite sure that she will have more of these lectures once she makes it into medical school in University.

Hmm..

The Healer nodded, and did consider Olivia's answer...impressed by how she put effort on her thinking. "Ah but then again, Antimony being toxic, we shouldn't see it as a stand alone ingredient. Fireseeds too, shouldn't be viewed as an independent ingredient. Each ingredient has its positive and negative effects, thus it is important to note their positives and how it will combine with the others. One of the examples would be the heat from the Fireseeds; if combined solely with antimony then it will produce a toxic vapor-- a logical effect that any muggle chemist would agree on. However-- the heat doesn't only react to antimony," At this point, River was sure he was blabbing. He was on full Healer mode talking about ingredients and chemicals. "All of the ingredients will react to the heat, because in this particular potion, Fireseeds are added for their alchemical properties. Fireseeds, based on your Herbology class is a product of fire, it thrives on that element alone, and fire is the element of life." It's way more than just heat, really.

"Indeed, it can Mr Edwards." He said beaming this time towards his other apprentice. "Most toxins can be cured by a simple common antidote, however, there are some toxins that are hard to get rid off simply because it has fooled the immune system of the host." Or victim, in this case. "Thus, introducing a carefully balanced antidote with a toxic element, to the system is required to counter such effects. Fooling the fool, if I may add."

Time to move forwards, yes?

"For today, we will be brewing an Antidote to Uncommon Poisons. Now this, I know, is very different from the ones written on your textbooks. That's because this formula is used in infirmaries like the Hospital Wing or St Mungo's." he said turning his back against the class, tapping the board once more to reveal more information. "Before we begin to brew this potion, what do you think is or are the benefits of poisons? And...what makes an uncommon poison, uncommon?"

Quote:

OOC: Thanks for waiting, guys! I'm having internet connection issues thus my very late reply. You can answer one or both questions before we move along to the main activity. You have another 24 hours to answer River's questions. Thank you!

Kyle was confused. Very confused. The benefits of poisons? What could a benefit of a poison be? He thought about it, then thought some more, and finally decided to raise his hand. "Something that dehydrates you can also lower your blood pressure." He'd heard of pills that did just that. Well, maybe didn't totally dehydrate you, but it did a little bit. Right? "I mean, just a little. But that's why when you're dehydrated you get dizzy. It's because your blood pressure goes down. So if you needed to drop your blood pressure because it's really high, something that dehydrates you would work, wouldn't it?" He wasn't all too sure on that. But there had been times he got dizzy and his father had him drink a lot of water and it helped. He'd said it was low blood pressure, and Kyle trusted his father was right. But he also didn't want to sound stupid in front of the class.

Now, what would be an uncommon poison? And why would it be uncommon? Well, obviously... "An uncommon poison would be uncommon because people are less likely to use it, I think. Like..." Think, Kyle, think! "Um... Essential oils. Like, eucalyptus is known to be poisonous to humans, and the oil is sold as a health thing to add to your bath or use in a diffuser and stuff. But even though it's easy to get a hold of, no one poisons anyone with it."

Vi nodded, listening to Healer Reed as he continued her train of thought. They shouldn't see each ingredient as a stand alone ingredient. But... Oh. It clicked. They all influence each other, huh? She nodded, taking note of this, and scribbled down a couple of thoughts on this matter. She'd come find him later to dive more into this.

What were the benefits of poison? Vi tapped the quill to the bottom of her chin as she thought through. Well... Poisons could combat bacteria and cells... Hadn't she seen an exhibition on poisons this past summer or was it the summer before? Olivia couldn't remember exactly. Hmm....

She raised her hand, taking a jab at his first question. "Professor. A pro of poisons is that they can suppress bodily functions that cause pain." Pain receptors right? That's what they were called... Something like that. Anyway.... "Some plants have toxic defenses which protects them from predators... Muggle scientists have extracted the toxins in order to use them in medicines. For instance, poppy has been used to relieve pain."

Wildcard. Interesting. In the Ravenclaw's young mind what he understood from the Professor was, Antimony is probably a versatile ingredient. Hmmm...

Aymeric had always been intrigued by the idea of 'versatility'. The ability to change or adapt with ease was always curious in his opinion. But now was not the time to daydream about his philosophy. He was in the middle of a a... ugh... dare he remind himself, Potions lesson. Why couldn't he be outside right now? So depressing. But the Professor didn't seem to notice.

Aymeric scribbled down a few messy notes here and there in his shared notebook. He was glad that the topic of the lesson was antidotes since it was a subject he was familiar with. Since both of his parents were travelers, they would brew themselves a few antidotes for their expeditions. There were several times when he was younger that he 'helped' (pass unharmful ingredients) them brew potions.

But the next question, which was presented before the class in his opinion was a bit distasteful. Benefits?! Of Poisons?! Aymeric crossed his arms and returned to his sulky mood. "Poisons don't have any benefits," the third year mumbled to himself. Poisons can kill! Any benefit they have is negative or lethal... he sighed.

Once again the urge to leave arose inside of him. Aymeric grabbed his quill, and began to do what he loved most, drawing. To be accurate he was sketching with leftover ink on his quill. He scribbled under his messy notes a few sketches of stargrass. He was waiting for the brewing to begin. The part he enjoyed least.

Having got back just in time, rearranged the ingredients on the desk, and puzzled over the answer to the first question, Dahlia was busy writing all the information down when the professor asked his next one. Or two. The first of them she had absolutely no clue. How could a poison be of any benefit to anyone? Surely the whole point of a poison was to kill? You don't cure people with them anyways. Not that she knew of.

But the second one she could have more of a stab at. She might be wrong, of course. She had been about a lot of things since the beginning of term. But this wasn't directly magical, right? This was kind of general. So Dahlia placed her quill down and stuck her hand in the air. "Is an uncommon one something that isn't used very often? Or not come across as much as more well known poisons? Sir." She added that quickly, just in case he thought her rude for blurting out an answer without addressing him first.

Junia's gears were turning and she had lots of questions about the things Reed was saying, though she'd be writing them down and saving them so she could research them on her own. This way she could impress him next time she spoke to him, yeah? It was a brilliant plan.

The potion they'd be brewing was interesting in that it was used for uncommon poisons, meaning not the run-of-the-mill kind you might read about. "Perhaps what uncommon means in this sense is not simply poisons brewed and given, but poisons coming directly from, say, creature bites or stings. Ones you wouldn't necessarily think of when listing poisons because exposure is rare, but that still fall under the same category." Then there was the whole benefits of poison question. Her mind went to royals and the way poisons were use to get rid of enemies one might have. That certainly benefited the person using the poison. She kept that one to herself, though. "It's like what Olivia said about suppressing the functions that cause pain. If you understand how a poison affects the body, you can figure out how to use it in small doses to help instead of hurt. You can figure out what it changes in the body, and then how that could be helpful to cure something that someone is dealing with."

Errr... so the intentionally leaving the answer as vague as possible didn't work. It did during Astronomy last year with Professor Berkovich (who was no longer a professor anymore after just one term, making Vivian wonder if the Astronomy position was cursed). It was worth the shot, she thought. But hearing the answers of her other class, the prefect had already picked a few things up. "Has something to do with antimony, sir," she replied with a tiny smile. Still vague, but definitely more detailed than the first answer.

But now moving on to the next question. This time, Vivian actually gave it more thought, considering how she knew her parents definitely stocked a few antidotes to uncommon poisons at home. It hadn't really crossed her mind earlier, as she never really took much notice at them brewing it. But yes, she was sure they had essence of dittany and even a betony plant at home. Healer parents, of course. It had its perks in this lesson, but it made her a little conscious to not make a fool of herself. Healer Reed probably knew her parents! When she had an answer organised in mind, the prefect raised her hand. "Some poisons can be used to strengthen and improve antidotes, sir, the same way our liquefied antimony will be used today. Some of them may have life-saving potential," she shared. "Also to check how much of the poison a human's body can take." Mhm, there's that.

And for the other question. Hopefully she wasn't speaking too much again. "I'd say a poison is uncommon if it came from something you least expected." Like in occasions wherein you go 'dear Merlin, where did THAT come from?' Yeah, it's probably happened loads of times. Not everyone was that observant. Once finished, she nodded and smiled at Healer Reed.

She didn't mean it the way the Healer did, afterall, she was aware you couldn't really bring life back once it was gone but it was fine. He'd just confirmed it wasn't the potion they were gonna be using anyway, leaving very little reason for her to bother explaining. The Ravenclaw offered a quick apology for her outburst but would otherwise let the matter go to rest.

Uncommon poisons. Suffice to say that in all her time here, she never thought a Professor would ask for benefits of poisons. Didn't matter that they wouldn't be brewing these poisons, the question was enough to keep her interested.

Not wanting to be a complete repeat, Jessa opted to ignore the question on what made poisons uncommon, moving instead to the question of what benefits they held. "They're good for if you aren't physically capable of taking on the bullies in your life. Easy to administer, easy to remedy once they agree to leave you alone, and they provide good incentive to cease undesired behaviour."

She would also be taking down the ingredients; these weren't the ones she had stored away for her antidotes.

Scribbling down her notes, Emma looked up again as the professor spoke and asked a few questions. This was EXACTLY the type of potions she was interested in. Ones she'd need to know how to brew as a healer one day. Chewing on her lip as she thought on the first question she raised her hand "It could possibly be used to counteract another poison or rid a person of an illness?"
