Halfway between Professor Wayland's hut and the barn, you will notice a much smaller, light grey, and white barn. This is the Infant Magical Creatures Nursery. The nursery is where many infant creatures are taken care of when their parents can't take care of them. Many of these infant creatures are orphans, and Professor Wayland needs all the help he can get. If you look just inside the door you'll find shelves stocked with dragon hide gloves, goggles, brushes, clean rags, and anything else you could ever need to care for these adorable infant creatures.
Just outside the back door there are multiple pens, and stables that house the larger animals, like Abraxans, and a closed off pasture that you can let the infant creatures play or roam around in. Make sure when you put the baby creature away that all the doors are securely closed when you are finished caring for the baby creatures. We wouldn't want them to get out and get hurt!
Please come in and let the babies get to know you! Watch them grow and learn! If there is ever any issue, please contact Professor Wayland immediately.

Derf could not WAIT to get down to the nursery today. Not that this was anything unusual really seeing as he was always keen to be here. He had woken up early (like WAY before breakfast early) to scour the grounds for the best selection of fresh wood lice for a certain little leafy lady and was carrying them all in a small box to share with her.

all of whom were on a first name basis with the third year - he finally found himself at the tree where Picketta was already climbing along the nearest branch to greet him. Grinning, Derf immediately began clicking and chirping at her while she leaped from the branch to his shoulder.

The infant creature barn was the BEST place at Hogwarts without a doubt. The only bad thing about the place was that the babies couldn't really leave it, so Emmeline couldn't show them the grounds or anything. 'Cept her own baby cruppy, Sirius, was finallllllly old enough to go in the big creature barn TOO; Emmeline was super excited about that. After constantly being around Sirius and even letting him sleep on her bed with her all summer, this "him being in the barn and her being in Gryffindor Tower" thing was already wearing on her. Plus, lessons had already started intruding into her time with her cruppy too.
Today, though, the second year had crawled out of bed ridiculously early so that she would have LOADS of time here before lessons started. But...she'd somehow forgotten that her cruppy didn't like getting up in the mornings any better than she did. After several failed attempts to get him to come out of his comfy kennel, Emmeline decided to play with one of the OTHER baby creatures until her cruppy felt like stirring. She gave Sirius some yummy cruppy food and water before she closed his kennel door again, and let her eyes wander over the other various enclosures. Unsurprisingly, she was almost instantly drawn to the nifflers' area and felt her face light up as she spied a baby niffler already awake and running around.
Emmeline let herself into the niffler area, already pulling out a toy she used to play with the adult nifflers: a super shiny knut with a string looped and tied through the small hole on the coin. The twelve-year-old grinned as she saw the little girl's eyes follow the coin in her hand; about half a second later, the baby niffler had scrambled over to Emmeline and was trying to climb desperately towards the shiny knut. She dropped to her knees on the ground and scooped up the baby niffler easily, handing her the toy and giving the baby a HUUUGE grin as she said, "Hiiii Sapphire!" She could read name signs, mhm.

Maddie was still in the whole first year exploring stage and was finally making her way outside the castle. The grounds were huge! Maddie kind of got the feeling you could lose an entire erumpent on them if you weren't careful. This excited her, and she was just in the mood to find something brand new as she picked up her pace. She might have even skipped a time or two as she passed by a few of the areas that had actually become familiar to her. Naturally, she found herself venturing over toward the creatures area, because why not?! It made her miss all the pets she'd had to leave at home, but at least Pepper was able to come to school with her.
She passed up the hut and looked up ahead of her, stopping right in her tracks when she noticed a little barn that she was pretty sure wasn't the main barn. This one was smaller and suddenly had all of Maddie's attention. Once she saw a Hufflepuff boy venture inside, she didn't think twice about doing that very same thing herself. She gave the doors of the barn a gentle push and made her way inside.
*GASSSSSSSPPPPPP*
It was...it was...a little NURSERY?! FOR BABY ANIMALS!!! Maddie dashed to the left of her and peered into the little kneazle area. Would they mind if she scooped them all up at once and rocked them in a basket?! She smiled at them...all of them...then turned on her heels. "Nifflers!" she said, her voice in a half-whisper. Yes...she'd seen them before, but these were babies! And she could take care of them! She went from area to area, checking out everything from crups to puffskein. Once she reached the back of the nursery, she came upon the Hufflepuff boy from earlier, clicking and chirping at a bowtruckle like he did this sort of thing all the time.
What was his name again? She didn't think she'd formally met him. "HEY!" she said, coming up to a stop beside him. "This is only the coolest thing ever! EVERRR." She shifted her weight from one foot to the other in excitement. "Do you have a pet bowtruckle? What's its name? Are you talking to him with all those clicks and chirps? Does it understand what you're saying?!" Maddie launched into her usual stream of questions, firing them off one right after the other as they came to her.
Sapphire had the shiny knut clasped tightly in her little paws, and prooobably would have put it in her belly pouch by now, 'cept that Emmeline had the other end of the string tied tightly around her own hand. So that Sapphire could hold and play with the knut without keeping it, you know? Emmeline was definitely going to give it to the baby niffler whenever she had to leave the nursery, but for now it kept the baby all happy and busy with something shiny. She watched as Sapphire turned the knut allll around and sniffed it with her nose and made cute little snuffling noises. The Gryffindor was totally determined to keep taking care of this baby alllll term, even if it wasn't an assignment or required, and then maybe--

The second year whirled around just in time to see a blonde girl running all around the barn; she grinned and held Sapphire close to her shoulder, making sure she had a SUPER good grip on the baby niffler, before she moved to open the enclosure with one hand and slip out.
Sapphire was TINY, so this really wasn't that hard. Plus, the baby was still all interested in the knut, so she didn't protest as Emmeline gently carried her after the other girl -- just in time to see the girl run into Derf and Picketta! A huuuuge smile split Emmeline's face as she approached them and said: "Hiii Derf! Hi Picketta!" The baby bowtruckle perched on Derf's shoulder was soo cute! She'd seen Picketta before, but never on her friend's shoulder. She shot Derf another smile 'cause he'd obviously successfully become Picketta's home tree, before she turned to the Hufflepuff girl standing nearby too and went on, "Hiii! What's your name? I'm Emmeline, and this is Sapphire." Just so she (and Derf) knew the baby's name too.

Derf was too focused on trying to communicate with Picketta to really notice that they had been joined by anyone else...but the bowtruckle certainly took note. Her cute little leafy pigtails twitched and her adorable little chatterings of her teeth grew more rabid and menacing. At first Derf was clueless to her changes, wondering if perhaps he had said something wrong in his bowtruckle when he heard the words of one of his NEW housemates - Maddie Kemp if he remembered her Sorting correctly WHICH he was fairly certain he did.
"Picketta...stop that," he fussed at the bowtruckle as her long twigy fingers began to twitch and make movements towards the first year. Which only made the creature's clicks and chirps more vicious sounding. "Now that's just rude!" Sighing, Derf turned to look at Maddie properly. "Sorry about her...she is just...super protective of me. I'll try to make sure she doesn't lash out and attack you...but it would help if you took a step back..."
There was no real time to answer the Hufflepuff's questions as Emmeline appeared, bringing another bright smile to Derf's face. "Hey Emmeline. Hiya Sapphire," he greeted with a little finger wiggling at the creature. "Oh, this is Maddie," he nodded sagely.
And once again Picketta looked less than pleased at the appearance of yet another girl in close proximity to her Home Tree.

Picketta's protectiveness was super, super cute, but Emmeline was eyeing her sharp-ish fingers a bit wearily, and ended up taking a step back. She maybe wouldn't have if she'd been by herself, but she was still carrying Sapphire and didn't want to risk the baby getting attacked. She grinned as the baby niffler in question looked curiously at the two Hufflepuffs and made some of her snuffling noises. Maybe she was saying hi?
She gave Maddie another smile, which just grew and grew the more the other girl talked. Another person that liked creatures, yesss! Or at least, she seemed to like baby ones. The Gryffindor shook her head as Maddie started talking about Sapphire, though, and said: "Nooo, Sapphire isn't mine. I'm just playing with her today. I'm gonna maybe ask Professor Wayland if I can adopt her, though." She paused to take a breath and went on, "My baby creature is a male crup named Sirius, and his kennel is over there" -- she pointed towards the cruppy kennels -- "But he's all sleepy this early in the morning, mhm. And there are looooads of babies that don't have anyone. You just go to their areas and check their name tags. What's your faaaavorite kind of creature, Maddie?" She pointed out a sign posted near the bowtruckles' tree that listed all of the bowtruckles' names and had some student names under the ones that were adopted. Emmeline had a GOOD feeling about Maddie so far, mhm. And and, the second year was so excited that she was kind of saying all of this maybe too fast. But there was a first year who liked creatures! It was awesome!!

Just like the previous term, Camilla had made it a habit to get herself down to the infant barns everyday. With her own crup, Cypress that she had adopted from Tristan last term out there it was enough reason to make the trip. It was also where Emmeline's crup Sirius was. So not only did she check on her own fur baby but the pre-teens too, though she knew the girl did a good job in handling that on her own. She also liked spending a few minutes with the other creatures there as well when she had the time to do so.
Entering the barn, Cami greeted some of the babies on her way over to Cypress' kennel. Unlocking the door and stepping inside she was instantly greeted with happy yipping and tail-wagging from the crup in mention. Laughing she knelt down scooping him up into her arms giving him a good cuddle and petting. "Well good morning to you too," she smiled getting herself licked right in the face.
Seeing that her crup wasn't about to settle down the women found herself sitting down right there in the center of the kennel allowing him to get in his morning kisses and petting. She didn't mind it one bit as she was laughing and smiling the entire time.

Tristan had just finished up mucking the winged horses stalls, and decided to check on the babies. At least with magic the job was quick and clean. He was happy to say that there weren't as many abandoned or orphaned babies this term, which was why he wasn't doing that extra credit assignment this year. He was also happy to report that all the students that had adopted were all making sure their pets were taken care of.
Next year they would all be at maturity and he would have to make space at the big barn. Or...they would be able to keep them at home if they wanted. He just wanted to make sure they were well taken care of the first couple years of their lives. Though his students were very capable, they were also very busy and forgot to check on their pets sometimes.
Tristan was just about to check on the Kneazles when he heard a voice coming from further down the way. He walked towards the sounds of Cruppies barking, and found Cami. Smiling, he replied, "Fancy meeting you here! I see that Cypress missed you dearly!" It was always nice to see his co-workers outside of the castle. They needed breaks with their pets too.

Derf was mostly trying to handle Picketta while Emmeline and Maddie talked, offering the bowtruckle a few of his own exasperating clicks of the tongue and teeth to try and converse with her in her own language to get the point across. Thank Merlin she had finally grown accustomed to Natalie at least. Everyone else seemed to be a bit of a work in progress, even Emmeline and Stasya who were naturals with handling creatures. Sigh.
"I reckon if you ask Professor Wayland about taking care of one creature in particular he could arrange something for you," he suggested to the first year. "How Emmeline and myself started out with Sirius and Picketta. It was a project last term and stuff. Just because it's not an official option this term doesn't mean you can't arrange it for yourself." Kinda like how he and Bel were maybe kinda sorta going to try and make a biking circle of sorts. He still needed to find her and arrange for her to teach him HOW to ride a bike...but one step at a time.
Turning towards Maddie properly, Derf gave her a looooooong look up and down as if trying to size her up...but mostly he was just trying to assess based on his initial impressions of her just WHICH creature would be best suited for her bubbly personality. Which of course lead to the obvious conclusion of a cruppy, but there were LOADS more creatures in the nursery too.
"I think you and Bubbles could get along super," he nodded while nodding his head towards the puffskein. "They are super easy to care for and love being cuddled and tossed about...AND you can use their hair in potions too...so grooming them would really be two fwoopers with one stone, you know? And besides...you're bubbly like her name!" It was meant to be!

Only when Tristan was right outside Cypress'kennel did she realize she wasn't entirely alone. Oops. "Well how could I deny him?" He pulled open the door to the kennel and stepped inside, closing the door behind him, and kneeling down to pet the sweet crup. Cypress quickly jumped up in his arms. "Hello, friend. You seem very happy this morning, sir." He said giving the crup a good rub down as Cypress licked his face. He chuckled, and watched as the crup hopped down from his lap and back to Cami's.
"How are you doing? Lesson's going smoothly?" His were doing pretty well so for this term. He hoped everyone else's were too.

What with all her joking about the cruppie kisses she was receiving she actually enjoyed them. Getting kisses from Cypress let her know that he was happy and that was the goal here. That and keeping him healthy which he most certainly was. "You can have some! Cy is nothing short of affectionate as I'm sure you know." She laughed.
Camilla laughed as she was momentarily ignored by her own crup so that Tristan could receive all the licks to his face. "He's always this excited when I come see him... but is he like this when you come visit him?" In other words was it just her or everyone that got this level of energy from her fur baby. She smiled giving Cypress a good rubbing and laughed when he went about licking her hands.
"I'm doing alright, how are you?" she asked rubbing her crups ears just like he liked her to. "Good. I have a few fun things planned that I hope the students enjoy. How are your lessons going?"

Between classes, OWL preparation and her extra curricular activities, Felicity felt like she was practically neglecting her baby Floyd. Instead of seeing her every day - and sometimes twice a day, like she had last year - she was making an average of every two days.
Which wasn't good enough. And that was why Liss had came prepared with a shiny new brush, and some apples and sugar cubes, and was ready to spend the day spoiling her Aethonan, who'd grown so much over the last year that it made her emotional just to think about it.

Ohhh, so that wasn't the girl's pet, but she was going to ask to keep it? That meant Maddie might be able to take on caring for a creature, too, and maybe at some point, she could adopt it! "That sounds awesome! I'd love to care for a baby creature and maybe adopt it one day, too," she said. She was only a first year and hadn't even spent a whole school year here, but she was loving all the opportunities she was coming across! "Well, good luck in getting to adopt him!" She looked in the direction the girl was showing her. This place was SO COOL! She tried to scout out some name tags to see if any of the creatures didn't have anyone taking care of them, but that would require her leaving Derf and Emmeline and walking around.
"I like cute and cuddly creatures," she said. "The ones that'll let me hold them." She nodded at Derf when he spoke up. So taking on a creature to care for seemed pretty simple. "Thanks! I'll go talk to him soon," she said. She looked toward the Puffskein. "You're right, but they're super close to Pygmy Puffs, and I already have one of those. I kind of want to try something new." She just wasn't sure what, but she didn't miss the fact that he'd said she was bubbly. It was a compliment, she knew.
It was super awesome how Derf could totally effectively speak Bowtruckle language with Picketta now. Emmeline sort of wished that she could speak cruppy language with Sirius too, but his barks and yips and stuff still made noooo sense most of the time. Still, she was super happy for Derf and how he'd totally become Picketta's home tree over last term, mhm.
Yay, Maddie wanted a baby creature to take care of and adopt and stuff too! Emmeline wanted to be SUPER encouraging and stuff, so she didn't correct the first year when she called Sapphire a boy; she just shifted the baby niffler in her arms a bit 'cause she'd been holding Sapphire for a while now and grinned at the slightly younger girl as she said, "Thanks! I bet Professor Wayland will TOTALLY let you take care of a baby too!" 'Cause didn't most professors like it when kids showed an interest in their subject and stuff?
Emmeline was a bit surprised when Derf suggested that Maddie look after a puffskein, though the name did fit her perfectly. Puffskeins definitely were easy creatures to take care of, but Maddie had sooo much energy that Emmeline had different ideas about what kind of creature the Hufflepuff girl could look after. Especially after Maddie said she wanted a cuddly creature and stuff. Beaming at the other girl, Emmeline put in, "What about a cruppy or a realllly energetic kneazle? They can play for hours and hours AND they're pretty cuddly too!" At least cruppies were generally cuddly and liked humans as, like, a RULE. But she was willing to bet that there were some kneazles who liked to cuddle too, and Emmeline thought that kneazles who were cuddled as babies would probably like being cuddled for life.
And then, Sapphire seemingly randomly started to wiggle and struggle and try suuuper hard to get out of Emmeline's arms. Frowning down at the baby niffler, the second year scanned the infant creature barn for anything shiny, 'cause surely that's what the baby wanted? She spotted Miss Felicity walking towards the winged horses and stuff, and sent the older girl a wave, a biiig smile and a "Hiiii Miss Felicity!" as she passed their area. Turning to Sapphire, Emmeline muttered softly, "It's okay, girl, I've got something shiny for you riiiight here. You totally don't need whatever Miss Felicity has." The Gryffindor held Sapphire close against her shoulder and briefly dipped her hand into her pocket; she made doubly sure that she had Sapphire's attention before she slooowly revealed one of those Muggle bouncy balls that looked like it was covered in glitter. 'Cept it wasn't glitter, it just looked all shiny and sparkly and stuff like that. "Here you go!", she told the niffler brightly as Sapphire immediately turned her attention to the closer shiny object and started sniffing it and grabbing for it with her paws. Hopefully Miss Felicity had noticed the baby niffler was out and had hidden whatever shiny thing she had with her by now, right?

"I've been trying to keep him from licking peoples faces like that but he doesn't seem to care that they might not enjoy it." Personally she didn't mind in the least but not everyone felt the same way she did.

This was...true. Camilla laughed softly in agreement with Tristan. "I've been doing my best. He was getting really good with it over the summer but I suppose that's because I was with him all day everyday and there wasn't as many people around for him to get excited about." She knew how difficult training could be and really it was very much worth all the time and effort put into it to have a respectful pet that could be handled easily.
"Thank you, Tristan," she smiled continuing her petting of said cruppie's ears. "Ah, I'm sure most of the students are busy with lessons of they would be down here much more often." Though she knew for a fact that there were several students that came down to the barns at least once or twice daily to spend time with the creatures.
Camilla smile when Cypress finally laid down with his head on her lap just so she continued to pet him. "Well Emmeline really loves creatures so I'm sure that no matter what you're teaching them about if a creature is here to be worked with you have her full attention." As was the way with any student. If they were interested then that was all that mattered. "As I'm sure you know Emme loves all creatures. Especially Nifflers and she's been asking about having one of her own. What do you think about something like this? What would owning one entail?" Anything and everything she could find out now about this would be very helpful.
