Default DADA Lesson Two - Shapeshifting Vampiric Fireballs

On the afternoon of the 15th of March, you find yourself walking towards the first floor for another Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson. The classroom, as always, is devoid of anything you'd find in a normal classroom. In fact, the classroom itself doesn't look like a classroom at all, but a circular cave-like room.

Confused? You might be.

Torches in brackets flicker along the circular room, both providing some sense of light but also illuminates the huge shadows that are cast around the room. Looking around, you notice that the room definitely doesn't look like it's part of the castle, even the stone looks different to the walls you're used to walking past. Cushions can be seen dotted here and there and are probably the few sights that give you a sign that you're in the right place.

If you're observant enough, you might notice that the walls of the circular room and the ceiling don't meet. In fact, there's a gap between the dark ceiling, as per the aesthetic, and the walls of the room, giving you a sign that there might be something beyond the room itself. But, try as you might, you won't be able to see above the walls of the room.

Something else you might notice? Aside from the door behind you, there are three very dark corridors leading off from the main room. Curious? You might be. Leaning against the wall between two of the corridors is Professor Hirsch himself, looking as casual as though this was an everyday occurrence. There's an odd dimpled-smile on his face and a slight glint in those green eyes.

So come in, make yourselves comfortable and try not to wander off into one of the corridors.

class progression:
- What is a Soucouyant?
- How do you get rid of the Soucouyant?
- ACTIVITIES: Choose a corridor to go through and defeat the obstacles

_____- Narrator post

- That's all, folks!

OOC: Please make sure you're familiar with Hirsch's rules as well as the SS site rules before posting. Class will continue tomorrow (eveningtime GMT) Class has already started but you're more than welcome to jump in, if you haven't done so already! Simply pretend as though your charrie has been there the entire time. Hope you have fun! ^^

Batcave?

Hirsch had turned his classroom into the Batcave. Of course that was the closest cave reference for a cave and the first. Though it was just a little more than just the batcave. She seen the difference and noticed a few flaws in the architectural structure like the walls of the cave and the ceilings didn’t come together. There were corridors going off to somewhere else maybe.

Though the whole aesthetic of the cave room screamed some kind of Indiana Jones and the lost temple vibe, which the lit touches added. She walked into the room, was she really the first one to class? It finally happened. She was proud of herself. Passing her Head of House leaning against the wall like the cool dude he was. ”Hello Professor. I feel like I just talked into the lost temple.” She said with a mischievous grin. Before taking a cushion.

A low whistle might have escaped Sam as she entered the classroom. Because...it was nothing like a classroom, not alone the usual one. The walls were covered in a stone unlike anything in the rest of the castle, and the whole room was...well, cavernous.

It just went up...and up...and up.

Or at least, gave the impression it did. The top was too dark to see.

"Hi Professor Hirsch!" she greeted her head of house with a grin, running her fingers lightly over the stone as she entered deeper into the room. "Awesome setting." This looked exciting, and she was relieved by his presence to know it was intentional she'd ended up here. She was still confused how she'd found herself on the moving staircases in the middle of the night last week.

The other doors caught her eye, but more than anything, Sam wanted to try climbing. Finding new places to climb was kinda her...thing. She tried her hands and a foot on the stone to get a feel for the grip, and knew she could easily get to where the ceiling should be. But really she was curious about whether magic really had stretched the room as high as it appeared, or whether it was all just a clever illusion.

"Hey, Professor...d'ya think I could climb on this later?"

She looked hopefully between Hirsch and the wall, before finding a cushion to sit down on.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

Well this was...interesting....

Jessa slowed her pace as she entered the Defense Classroom...or what used to be the Defense Classroom but had clearly taken on a whole different look again. It wasn't so much that the class looked different, as she was used to changes in scenery when it came to Professor Hirsch, rather...it was the setting itself.

A dark cave like space with little dark corners where anything could happen and dark narrow passageways where an equal amount of misfortune could take place. While it was yet another opportunity to learn, all Jessa could see was disaster around each corner, uncurling very long and slender fingers, waiting for the moment to start picking them off. Everything bad would happen as far as she was concerned and the thought was enough to have the young girl lose the colour in her face.

"H-Hello Professor." She barely managed to get out, her eyes constantly darting from one space to the next. Constant vigilance was a real thing.

Emma Dakest was READY for this lesson. She had done all the studying she could stand (it was almost HOURS of wand practice and book tower making), and gotten in some practice with all the older students she liked (mostly her favorites) AND she had even written her papa for extra help. R E A D Y. That was practically her new middle name.

Except she wasn't ready for a cave. Their classroom looked like a cave THAT WAS THE COOLEST THING EVER. The one thing she remembered from all her parent's letters was to keep her wand out at all times - even if she thought it didn't work right most times - in case she would need to use it. This was one of those times, right? Em thought so.

She bound into the class, waving said wand at the professor gleefully. "Hi, Hirsch!" He got a bright smile as she found herself a seat that looked the most comfortable and had spots around her so friiiiiends could join her!

As much as Abey hated to admit it, Defence Against the Dark Arts was always a difficult lesson to deal with, and he had so many conflicting feelings about it. Obviously, he wanted to be GOOD at it, partly because he wanted to be mega brilliant at duelling but ALSO because he really really wanted and needed to know how to protect and handle himself if dangerous things happened again, which they almost certainly would. AND ALSO, Hirsch was really mega nice too actually, and really understanding. Abey wanted so badly to love and enjoy and succeed in this subject, he really did.

Buuuuuut it was also one of those lessons that made his heart race and his breathing go really fast and his hands sweat and his whole body shake with anxiety because it could be frightening and full of unexpected things, because that was sort of the whole point of it and also what they were learning to defend themselves against. But Abey knew, he really, really did, that to learn how to protect himself against frightening things, he had to leave his comfort zone.

Like... today.

Abey always always always made sure to prepare himself before entering any classroom, just in case, so the setting of today's lesson didn't really shock him, but it did have him hesitating at the door for just a moment before taking a deep breath and continuing inside. He gripped tightly at the strap of his school bag with both hands and tried so very hard to keep his expression neutral while he mentally yelled at his stinging eyes to don't-you-dare-drop-a-single-tear-I-mean-it. He wouldn't panic, he wouldn't cry, he wouldn't be a problem. He wouldn't.

"Good afternoon, Professor," Abey greeted Hirsch politely and automatically but ever so quietly as he moved immediately towards the first familiar (and older) friendly face he could see, which happened to belong to Jessa. Already he was feeling the familiar pangs of anxiety in his chest, the heavy nausea in his throat and stomach, and was trying to hard to desperately wish it away, and sticking by someone he knew and felt safe with seemed like the best possible way to keep the panic at bay.

Zoryn was not feelin all that great about their chances at a dragon lesson today... Not until she walked into the CLASSCAVE AND JUST KNEW!!!!

OMG!!!!!!

The Gryffindor BOUNCED in excitement as she bounded towards Professor Hirsch. "Y'know, I was starting to lose hope, Professor," she nodded. "I can't believe we're FINALLY having a lesson on DRAGONS TODAY!!!!!!!!"

She had been waiting for this moment since their very FIRST day of class.

YAAAAAAAAAAAS !!!!!!!!!!!

Well this was not like this last time Théo was here. It was less like a class and more like a cave the gryffindor would never go in. Not because he was afraid of caves or anything just that he would have no reason to. It was beginning to look less like a cave but still not a normal school classroom. Théo was still looking around as he walked in and didnt stop until he kicked a cushion on the floor.

So no seats either. Well at least that was somewhat normal.

Better than mats.

He still felt like he was missing something or just that he wasnt very observant or cared.

Oh there was the Professor doing the cool leaning against a wall thing.

It always worked.

"Hey Professor. Where are we?, well besides in the castle still but you know what i mean"

Wait, had he finally reached the point where his lack of sleep was causing him to have hallucinations? Because he could swear that he'd just been in the castle. But now he'd stepped into some kind of weird cave whose ceiling didn't quite meet the walls.

No, it must be real, because he heard various questions from his classmates with subjects ranging from climbing to the ubiquitous dragons suggestion from Zoryn.

"Hello, professor," Ronan greeted, taking a seat on one of the cushions, the now common for the fifth year cup of coffee in his hand. "Nice cave. But what's wrong with the ceiling?" Or was it just a trick of the light that made it look like it was detached from the rest of the cave?

Things hadn’t exactly gotten better, but Stasya had gotten resoled to the fact that nothing normal ever happened at Hogwarts. Maybe even just that nothing normal ever happened to her in general, but she’d been actively trying not to think that something was out to get her. Besides, everyone’s dorms had gotten ransacked. It hadn’t just been her things that had gotten destroyed and needed repairing. It wasn’t just her who had been sleeping in the common room for a while now just because the dorms still felt weird. She’d had thoughts about trying to smuggle either Dobby or Albus into the tower just for more company, too, but so far her companions had stayed out in the barns. And anyway, she trusted Professor Hirsch not to let anything really hurt her.

She’d met the sight of the classroom with curiosity more than anything else, letting her grey-green eyes flicker around the cave and however much the torches lit up. She’d noticed the oddness near the ceiling, too, but there had to be a reason. Just like there had to be a reason for those three corridors over there by where the professor was leaning. “Hi Professor Hirsch!,” she called out to him, giving him as bright of a smile as she thought she could manage given everything. She knew he knew a lot of what was bothering her, if not everything, anyway, and she wanted to show him she was trying to be strong.

And she was pretty sure dragons weren’t going to come out of those corridors, but maybe Zoryn’d be right eventually.

Oh, how we drift away from our friends. And the ones back home play remember when

Daisy entered the classroom with her mouth agape. "Hello, Professor Hirsch," she greeted, curious as to what the lesson was going to entail. Daisy quickly sat down on a cushion. She was feeling very nervous about the lesson. Normally, Daisy wasn't very good with this subject. Considering how she felt, her confidence was even lower.

At least there wasn't any grass.

Derf still hesitated in the entrance for a moment, allowing a few of his classmates to pass by him before entering himself. His bright blues instantly fell on Abey, so naturally the Hufflepuff made his way over to his Gryffindor. For reasons. A LOT of reasons. "Hey," he whispered, giving the other boy a small nudge with his shoulder once he was close enough...and offered his hand. You know, in case Abey wanted to hold it. Jessa got a small wave herself before his attention moved to the professor himself. "Hey, professor," he greeted as a bit of an afterthought. Emma and Stasya also got small little waves, although his gaze DID linger on Stasya for a bit longer. Again...for reasons.

Professor Hirsch seemed to have this stone and rock aesthetic going on, yeah? Sorta.

She could do this... okay, so she wasn't any sort of Dueling expert and Charms and Transfiguration spells were definitely more appealing and useful. But learning to defend yourself against the dark arts? Surely that had some merit, even if she was awful at being able to predict what was coming. Unless it was a bludger. Or a quaffle.

And Hirsch was a good teacher; at least he was consistent and honest and fair, unlike some of the other teachers who taught on the first floor. Not Newton Marchand, as that woman was okay, but the other one was the one who was disconcerting.

The classroom though, was void of any indication and was kind of set up eery... wasn't Halloween like months ago? Did Hirsch forget? Or were they celebrating Halloween in March now? Also to note, where were her fellow Slytherins? A quick glance around the room told her she was the FIRST snake to arrive and the fifth year had to wonder if somehow she missed a memo that this was a Gryffindor and Ravenclaw only lesson? Oh, but there was Daisy and Derf, so just a no Slytherins allowed? No, Hogwarts wasn't exclusive like that with their lessons anymore.

"Hello Professor Hirsch," she greeted upon seeing the man, looking both casual and also a glint of up-to-no-good? Now, where to sit... a random cushion near the front might be good, as the most important exams of her life were right around the corner. Focus was of essence here.

Patrick walked into the room and stopped a bit short. It was extremely dark in the room compared to what it normally looked like. Thankfully there were a few torches around the dark room made it a bit more bearable and not as creepy. He wasn't sure what they were going to do when he noticed the three tunnels. This looked like a bad movie about to begin and he just wasn't sure how well that was going to go over. "Hello Professor." he said trying to find a place under a torch so that the darkness wouldn't surround him.

Was the ALMOST GRADUATE surprised to see the DADA classroom was... not like a classroom? No. Not even a little bit. It rarely did, did it? Giving the man a nod (yeah they were back to not getting along in case he didn't know) she made her way into the room and picked a cushion well away from everyone else... especially Jessa Cambridge. UGH. She was a horrible person. So says Dora.

But her eyes did find her "cousin" Emma! She got a wave! Dora adored that child, really... and seeing her reminded her she needed to write Sabel and Arya... he might have something to say about her gap year. SIGHS. But whatever. It was learning time. GET ON WITH IT HIRSCH!

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta came to an abrupt stop as she entered the classroom, raising her eyebrows in surprise. The classroom.. didn’t look like a classroom at all. In fact, it looked more like a cave. Interesting. She noted the three corridors that seemed to lead off from the room too. Now, what was that all about? She curiously observed her surroundings for a moment or two before greeting the professor with a small smile.

“Hello, professor.” She took a seat on a comfortable looking cushion, pulling out her parchment, quill and textbook before arranging them neatly in front of her. Hopefully, class would begin soon.

Kitty couldn't honestly say she was very surprised by the change of classroom appearance. It was a little surprising when she first walked in and saw everything circular and looking different, but similar things had happened throughout her seven terms at Hogwarts, so she quickly replaced her surprise with curiosity. What was down those three corridors, she wondered? "Good morning Professor Hirsch," she said, smiling pleasantly at him and at nearby students. "I can't wait to see what mischief you have for us down those corridors."

Kimothée Chalamet • The UWU Agenda • Once Baby, Now Trouble • All Growed Up

It was only just the afternoon for today, and Vivian was already tired. Juggling between prefect duty, OWLs prep, and a social life was taking a toll on her, and it was kinda obvious with her messy ponytail up today. The blond stopped immediately when she reached the classroom. Wait, was this even her classroom? It was unrecognisable, like Professor Hirsch had given it a complete makeover. At least he had left them some cushions. Despite the darkness and the Merlin-knows-where-those-lead-to corridors, the prefect honestly thought it was cool.

But she didn't forget her song. The setting had definitely influenced the song of the day. "It's getting dark and it's all too quiet, and I can't trust anything now. And it's coming over you like it's all a big mistake," the prefect sang, keeping her voice a little lower than usual in fear of her echo awakening any creature that was possibly hidden. "Good afternoon, Professor." She hadn't failed in this year's Defense Against the Dark Arts playlist yet, right? Except maybe a few times when she would nearly arrive late from almost oversleeping, because you know... the prefect life was hard.

Vivian then flopped on the cushion beside Sky. Her eyesight hadn't totally given up on her yet, thankfully.

Walking into the Defense Against the Dark Arts was always confusing, and today was no different. It was some sort of cave, even though it was located in the middle of the castle. "Hello professor," he greeted as he entered. He decided not to take a seat, because he didn't really want to sit on the floor of a cave, even if there were cushions. He glanced around for his person but Noelle wasn't there yet so he would just wait for her and try not to be too creeped out by the atmosphere of this room.

Junia's wand was in hand as she entered the unfamiliar looking space, curious gaze flickering here and there before resting on the professor. The brunette bowed her head and smiled faintly. "Hello Professor." No curtsy today. She wasn't feeling quite herself lately and the movement felt unfamiliar and forced.

Abey was spotted and the fifth year moved to stand nearby just in case he needed her. It looked like he was well surrounded by friend support at the moment, though. She was thankful for that. Would they be starting soon? She hoped so.

Cavern-like room…now that was peculiar.

Cassie took in her surroundings as she entered the DADA classroom for the latest lesson, taking note of anything that might play a role in the subject matter or that she felt she needed to be aware of. Torches…cushions…plenty of shadows. All laying within the circular space that looked mildly out of place within the familiar walls of Hogwarts, not to mention the three corridors that stemmed away from where they currently resided and whatever mysteries currently lay on the other ends awaiting them later on in the class.

Professor Hirsch definitely had something up his sleeve.

“Good afternoon, Professor,” she greeted her head of house with a smile. Cassie was ready. This could be fun!

Hirsch had already been happy in this instance, especially seeing as he was teaching about an exciting new topic, but then the words being said by the Ravenclaw caused his face to light up.

Did she just make an Indiana Jones reference?!

"The Lost Temple, eh?" There was an oddly proud look on his face. Maybe he should’ve dressed up as Indiana Jones, just to see how many people would understand the reference. "In that case, I promise you won’t have to try and harness the power of the Crystal Skull in today’s lesson." Cue a cheeky smile.

This…….. was interesting.

Hirsch was used to hearing a lot about the different levels of creativity within his students but this was completely new. A small smile flitted across his face but he didn’t dare disturb the Ravenclaw’s clever observations of the wall itself.

And then she spoke.

"Hello, Sam." Unusual request? It was. Was he used to it? Probably. "Yeah, I don’t see why not," he said, giving her a half-shrug of his shoulders, "Just be careful, okay?" Which, all things considering, she probably didn’t need telling but still.

This was another interesting response but for entirely different reasons.

Eyebrows furrowed, he watched the girl enter the room. Having worked with her throughout the year, this wasn’t something he was used to seeing from her. Usually, he assumed she was enthusiastic about the class, or just the aspect of learning something new, but this didn’t scream ‘enthusiastic’ to him. This…… said something different.

Unless he was just being overprotective.

"Hey, Jessa. You okay?" A harmless question, really.

The enthusiasm appeared from a young Gryffindor and if he was completely honest with himself, he wasn’t entirely surprised. She seemed like the type to have a ton of energy about her, if you take the bounding and the greeting into consideration. Pity puberty had to be a thing.

Anyways.

"Hello, Emma. Glad that you’ve come so well prepared." He noticed the wand. He did.

Ah.

Ah.

While Hirsch didn’t know the entirety of Abey’s struggle or what he was feeling at this precise moment, the boy was on a radar. Nothing bad, mind you. But considering the type of subjects that his lessons dealt with, the boy needed to be kept an eye on, whether he knew it or not. Just in case.

"Hello, Abey. How are the Shield Charms coming along?"

She had been waiting for this moment since their very FIRST day of class.

YAAAAAAAAAAAS !!!!!!!!!!!

…………. Uh oh.

It was nice to see Zoryn so enthusiastic about a topic, really, but the fact that she was assuming that they were learning about dragons left an uncomfortable feeling in his stomach. He wouldn’t mind, really, but considering the topic of today’s lesson wasn’t dragons, it meant that he was going to have to break her heart.

Again.

"Not exactly," he started slowly, giving her an apologetic look, "But it’s quite close in that there’s fire involved." Was that giving away too much? He hoped not.

"Hey, Mr Montmorency," he started, pushing his glasses a little further up his nose. The question earned the Gryffindor a small chuckle from the man, mostly because it was unexpected.

"I haven’t transported you anywhere, if you’re worried about that. This is just a bit of heavy-duty charms work to make the classroom setting look more interesting than a normal desk-and-chairs room." It was his personal belief that you couldn’t learn properly in that kind of environment, where your energy and motivation was drained the moment you stepped foot into the room. "What do you think of it?"

The fact that the Gryffindor has brought a cup of coffee with him amused the man slightly. It highlighted the fact that he was a fifth year and there was probably more coffee in his bloodstream than actual blood. As a coffee addict, this was exactly how he got through his exams as well.

"Hello, Mr Carter. Is the coffee helping?" He was too curious to just let it go. "Make sure to leave it at the side when the activity starts, yeah?" It wasn’t against his rules but it was a hazard, at the end of the day.

As for the ceiling, the man paused to glance upwards, as though he was contemplating it. "Good question. It’s mostly like that for the main activity, as a precaution." In case something went wrong. That was all he was going to say about that.

Here was another student who he kept an eye on, while still trying not to come across as being overbearing or too overprotective. He had a feeling that students wouldn’t really like that in the first place. He wasn’t their parent, after all, even if the protective feeling was still there.

"Hello, Stasya! How are you?" Again, an innocent question.

The reactions from students about his classroom setup was always nice to see. It was nice to see that they’re being kept on their toes, rather than getting used to a single setup that they might get bored of a little too quickly. This was, without a doubt, part of the reason why he did this in the first place.

Sorta.

The stone and rock aesthetic was a nice one, wasn’t it? Very Indiana Jones.

Hirsch tilted his head slightly at the Hufflepuff’s entrance. He couldn’t help but think back to a previous lesson, one where Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne refused point blank to enter the room for reasons beyond Hirsch. But there was an improvement today, which was nice to see. No look that suggested that he had just walked into his worst nightmare.

"Hello, Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne," he said, giving him a smile and a nod of his head. He almost opened his mouth to ask how he was feeling but decided against it.

Finally, a Slytherin.

Hirsch was starting to wonder what had happened to the people of the house of the snakes. Running late was one thing but an entire house not turning up? That was weird, even by Hogwarts’ standards.

"Hello, Miss Diggory. Nice of you to make it." Really. He was beginning to wonder.

Again, reactions to his classroom setup were interesting. Some people were always used to the way things never looked like a normal classroom and only looked on at the setup with mild interest. While others were completely taken aback and didn’t know what to think or do.

Again, interesting.

This one fitted into the latter category from what Hirsch could tell, which wasn’t very much. "Hello, Mr Dooley," he said, giving the boy a smile and a nod of his head. He would find out soon.

If Hirsch was completely honest with himself, he never knew where he stood with the Gryffindor. One minute she seemed to be crying on him and the next, she hated his guts and made it apparent that she did so. He didn’t care, really, but it would be nice to know for certain and not have to deal with so many mixed emotions. He was growing tired of it and frankly, it was getting hard to keep up.

Again, an interesting reaction. Maybe it would be even more interesting to see what they make of the topic of today’s lesson itself, especially considering that it wasn’t exactly the norm for dark creatures.

Mischief?!

Hirsch let out a small chuckle at the use of that very word. It was one he’d been called a number of times as far back as he could remember. The only boy in the family had to hold another title for himself and mischievous was the one, especially given all the mollycoddling he got for it as well.

Ah, here she was!

Hirsch did think the Slytherin Prefect would turn up earlier, especially seeing as she was so punctual to his lessons, but the sight of her seemed to explain why she was only just strolling in. OWLs were tough, it was granted, and he could see the toll it was taking amongst the fifth years already. It was sad that so much importance lay in a single exam, one that tested your memory more than your understanding, but who was he to go against the Ministry of Magic?

The song choice brightened him up and, when she was done, he gave her a short round of applause as well as a bow of his head. "Good choice! Very fitting, I must say. I can see why you've gone for that particular song." Though, was the not trusting anything part a sign of constant vigilance? He wasn't sure? "Afternoon, Vivian. Hirsch always had something up his sleeve. Where was the fun otherwise?

The man paused to glance down at his watch and, deciding that it was almost time, looked up just in time to see one last person enter. "Afternoon, Cassie," he said, returning her smile with one of his own, "Close shave." Not in any kind of trouble, though.

Tick..... tock...... tick....... tock........

Another glance was made at his watch and he mentally counted down the last few seconds before deciding that it was time to start. A little later than he normally would've liked but a start was a start. Raising his wand, he flicked it in the direction of the door, which shut with a loud SNAP!

Did that get everyone's attention? Good.

"Welcome to another Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson!" he said, clapping his hands once and smiling around at them through the eerie lighting, "I understand that this setting might seem a little odd, and maybe scary to some, but there is a reason behind all of this." They would find out why soon enough and, frankly, those who knew Hirsch probably knew that this was very fitting to his style.

Anyways.

"If I asked you all to close your eyes and think of a dark creature, any dark creature whether they're real or not, most people would think about creatures that are cold, icy and probably part of the living dead. We've frown accustomed to associating dark creatures with these adjectives and have grown up hearing about creatures that fit into this category. In fact, this is probably why Necromancy is such a huge topic and you'll find that many creatures fit under that category." He was going somewhere with this.

"However," Dramatic pause, anyone? "Today, I want us to look at a creature that's the opposite. A creature that isn't icy, cold or even part of the living dead but one that harnesses one of the core elements that you can use against Necromancers. Something a little different but still just as deadly." Were they excited? He certainly was.

"But before I give anything away, I want to hear from all of you. What do you know about Soucouyants? Has anyone heard of it? And if you haven't, what do you think it is?" Come on, let's get those brains working.

OOC: EEEEEEEEE! Look at you guys! <3 I'm really sorry about keeping you guys waiting: I seem to have fallen ill and my brain went nope. So if any of this doesn't make sense, that's probably why.

Anyways, class has officially started so please keep chatter to a minimum! If you haven't posted already and want to, feel free to jump right in! Just pretend as though your charrie has been there the entire time.

The question is super simple: what is a Soucouyant? What do you know about it? What do you think it could be? We don't want any textbook answers so feel free to be as creative as you want! Also, please be considerate of other people's answers and try not to repeat any!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to give me a nudge <3

I'll continue this lesson tomorrow/later today at roughly 10pm GMT.

Thanks, lovelies!

Patrick thought about dark creatures and could only imagine spiders, the most disgusting create ever. It was the one thing that he just couldn't handle and refused to deal with. He would avoid anything with eight legs at all costs and would never in a million years let one live. He raised his hand ready to answer the question, although he was pretty sure that Professor Hirsch would not find his answer amusing. "I'm really hoping that a Soucouyant is not a relative of a spider." he shrugged his shoulders and shook as he thought about the ickiness of spiders.

A grin appeared on Sam's face as Hirsch confirmed she could go climbing after class. "Of course, Sir!" She'd put a cushioning charm on the ground just in case, to keep the man happy - he was her Head of House afterall - but she knew she wouldn't need it. The Ravenclaw was a seasoned climber; she'd been scaling the walls of around wizarding London since she'd been knee high to a billywig. The best climber she knew.

With that settled, she quietly scooted forward with her cushion to where her bestie was sat. "Hey," she whispered, just to let the Gryffindor she was there, and it was okay if she wasn't feeling talkative.

And then class started, and Sam hugged her knees to her chest as she listened. She couldn't say she was particularly scared by this environment, nor that creatures of the living dead variety would be the first come into her mind. But then she'd had an upbringing different to most. Her curiosity was piqued though, and she let gaze run over the doors she'd spotted earlier a little bit more carefully.

As luck would have it, Sam had heard of Soucouyants. She'd stumbled across them in a reference book whilst researching for one of her previous homeworks, and had struggled with how to pronounce it. She still wasn't convinced she had it right. Soo-coo-ants? Ahem. At least she didn't need to repeat it for her answer. "They're kinda like female vampires that can also transfigure themselves, Professor."

With NEWTS that would happened in less than three months, Ava had been working her bum off to study as hard as she could and also became a tutor for Phillip. (although in many times they both ended up not studying at all.) So skipping class was not an option, especially Defense Against the Dark Arts which was her favorite subject and also the one that she needed to ace on her NEWT in order to enter the YATI program.

Sitting next to Olly, the Gryffindor just listened to the Professor once the lesson had started. Soucouyant, huh? She did hear about that creature but not that much. "Professor.." She rose her hand and tried to answer the question. "Isn't that soucouyant a kind of blood-sucking dark creature from.... Okay, I forgot exactly but pretty sure it's not from Europe." Yes, she was sure of that.
