Default DADA Lesson One - Do It For The Vine

On a bright but cool morning of the first of October, you might find yourself walking towards the first floor for yet another Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson. Anyone who is used to Hirsch's style might know what to expect and what not to expect: no chairs, no desks and certainly nothing that looks like it belongs to a normal classroom.

The classroom itself is bright, well-lit and looking a little larger than normal. But there's also a nature theme emerging in the room: instead of stepping on a stone floor like the corridor outside, you find yourself stepping on a grassy area. In fact, every inch of the floor seems to be covered in grass with only a bunch of large cushions standing out.

What's even more curious is the collection of rocks that has made a return from a lesson on trolls the previous year. These rocks, lined up against one side of the room, seem to vary in box size and texture, with some covered in greenery and others looking as smooth as the pebbles you find at the beach. The only other object that stands out against the grass is a large wooden box, sitting near the front of the room. Every now and then, the box would wriggle, as if the thing(s) inside are trying to get out.

Curious? You might be.

Standing next to the box and leaning against the wall is none other than Professor Hirsch himself. Cool, collected and casual, the Defence Professor has his arms crossed against his chest and his legs crossed at the ankles and definitely ignoring the wriggling the box is making.

So come in, make yourselves comfortable and try not to find out what's inside the box while you wait for the lesson to start.

class progression:
- In what kind of situation would it be considered wrong to start attacking creatures?
- Why is the Ensnarement Charm more acceptable than Incarcerous?
- MINI ACTIVITY: Use the Ensnarement Charm to make vines grow from the grass and/or the rocks
- MAIN ACTIVITY: Use the Ensnarement Charm to keep the gnomes rooted

- That's all, folks!

OOC: Please make sure you're familiar with Hirsch's rules as well as the SS site rules before posting. Class will continue tomorrow (eveningtime GMT+1) Hope you have fun! Class has already started but you're more than welcome to jump in, if you haven't done so already! Simply pretend as though your charrie has been there the entire time ^^

Now this was one of those classes where he didn't care what time of the day it started. It was just plain cool. Until homework happened. Then not so cool. Even so, he wasn't going to be the FIRST one to class, so hold your hippogriffs Hunter. He was there, finally. The grass, though, was unexpected. Had him pausing for a moment. As did the rocks.

Not exactly the picture of a defense against the dark arts classroom he had in mind, even if it was better on the feet. Where were the scary monsters? Why was it so bright in here? Were they setting stuff on fire because of the nature theme?

Hearing his brother, Ryder grinned. "Yea! So it can eat you!" he said, starting towards his side. "Sup, professor."

Defense Against the Dark Arts was by far the subject that Isa struggled with the most. She didn't enjoy shooting spells at things and blowing stuff up the way her classmates seemed to. The evil nature of most things they learned about in this class was disturbing. It was horrible to think that such darkness actually existed in the world. Even with the simple defensive spells Isa didn't want to intentionally harm anyone. That was why she was against participating in duels. She just couldn't see why people would want to cast potentially harmful spells at each other. However, Isa was trying to improve her performance in this class, so here she was trying her best to be open to learning and participating in class today. No guarantees that she wouldn't become upset if they were discussing anything horrible or gory today. The gory discussions were always a stomach churner.

Isa smiled as she entered the room, mentally telling herself that she could do it, could make it through one defense against the dark arts lesson without any problems. "Hello, professor Hirsch." Isa gazed into the professor's eyes, trying to tell what he was thinking about her in his lessons. She had discussed things with Professor Hirsch to make a plan for improving her performance in this class, and she was working on her willingness to learn the subject. After greeting the professor, Isa went over to sit with her friend Jessa, who was currently investigating one of the rocks. "Hi Jessa!" The fourth year Hufflepuff looked at the rock. "What do you think it is?" Jessa was really good with that kind of stuff. Right now Isa was just hoping it wasn't something that ate people or would hurt her. Being comfortable with Defense Against the Dark Arts was a process, not something that happened overnight.

There were a couple of reasons why Stasya was in somewhat of a better mood than she’d been way back at the start of term. Okay, maybe more than a couple, because she had to include extracurriculars that really did work as distractions from her thinking about things. Because as far as she was concerned, learning Mermish and Gobbledegook and even Latin were important. But mainly there were two reasons she was happier as she’d gotten to the DADA classroom for the next lesson. First, it meant another lesson with, maybe not her surrogate papa even if deep down she had to admit she wouldn’t have minded that except she figured it wasn’t possible, but kind of like her awesome surrogate uncle. Just not actually related, of course. And then also, it was only nine days until her birthday! So that definitely meant a happy Stasya.

As she’d walked inside the classroom, her grey-green eyes had widened perceptibly at the wriggling box, even as she’d also noticed the grass and the return of the rocks from last term. Wr5iggling boxes were more interesting, because it made her try and remember every possible creature that might be hidden inside. She was pretty sure it wasn’t dragons, even if she figured Zoryn would be right eventually.

“Good morning Professor Hirsch!,” she called out, giving him a smile as she made her way to a cushion sort of near Noelle. Snagging one for her bestie too, whenever Emmeline made it to class. Because it didn’t hurt to make sure she got a good seat too.

Nathan stepped into the classroom, unimpressed as always. His blue eyes bored over to the DADA professor. Was he obliged to greet the professor? Not really. Did he want to? No. So he simply nodded at the professor before making his way past him. He wondered what were the rocks for? They seemed familiar. Eh...not that he cares anyway. Nathan sat down on the grass and leaned back to watch whatever was in that wriggling box. Things hardly surprise him, nowadays. He yawned.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Dorian literally ran through the open classroom door, afraid that he was too late. He had been leaving the Great Hall and took a right turn instead of a left and it took him some time to realise that he was going to wrong way and by the time he realised this he had not much time left. That's why, covered in sweat and breathing heavily but also with a proud grin on his face he had ran inside the classroom.

As he took a moment to catch his breath, he gripped his side as it started to HURT and then he looked around. For a moment he panicked seeing the grass and rock formations thinking he was at the wrong place again but when his blue eyes found the professor he calmed down. "Hiya Professor!" he greeted with a enthusiastic wave of his hand and then moved towards a cushion next to an older girl with blonde hair (Dora)and sat down. "Hey, is there a spell that vanishes sweat?" he asked with no shame.

DADA was one of those classes that he always had one-hundred and ten percent confidence in and it showed in the way he walked into the room. Of course, Ronan should feel confident considering that this was one of his best subjects, if not the best.

The rooms appearance hardly fazed him, since rooms changing on a whim was old hat to older students like him, but the box did pique his curiosity. What could be causing it to move like that? Though, he didn't go and investigate. Instead, he picked a cushion towards the front of class and plopped down with a "Hello, Professor Hirsch."

Now, what's in the box?

Teddy entered the Defence against the Dark Arts classroom, and noticed all the changes. The floor changing from stone to grass. He didn't much like grass, it made him itch, but he supposed the grass that was in the classroom wouldn't be too much of a problem.

"Hello Professor Hirsch," Teddy greeted the man as he walked past. He saw his classmates sitting on cushions, and was very thankful to see them. Even if the grass here didn't give him an itch, he didn't want to attempt sitting on it. So he went towards some of Ava's friends and sat down, NOT looking at the box. Okay, he was totally looking at it. Every time it moved, he felt a drop of sweat roll down his spine, making him shiver. He wasn't sure he wanted to find out what it was.

SUMMER FOREVER

Etta made her way to her next lesson, a little excited. Professor Hirsch always made each lesson very interesting and the spells were exciting to learn too. She entered the classroom, a a tad bit late but class hadn't yet begun.. and she wasn't surprised at what met her eyes. She saw rocks, a wooden box that seemed to twitch a little.. and professor Hirsch. Hm. She wondered what they were going to be learning today. Something fun, hopefully.

"Hello, professor." She greeted the professor with a cheerful smile before taking a seat somewhere near the front of the classroom. The girl pulled out a parchment and quill, ready for class to begin.

Ava would never skipped Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson. Never ever.

But today she was almost late, thank you for insomnia that making her awake until 3 AM due to pre-NEWT stress. Merlin, being a seventh year was rough. Quickly the Gryffindor ran to the first floor where the classroom located and... Thankfully the lesson hadn't started yet. Woah, she was lucky. "Hello, Professor Hirsch." She greeted the man while managing her breath. Usually Ava always took a seat next to her bestie, but since she was late and there were people sittinh with her already so at this time she would rather sit next to... the twin brother. "Heyyyyy Teddy!"

Her brown eyes couldn't help but looked at the wiggly box. Oh, was there something interesting inside?

The grass was a fun touch. Charlotte knew better than to take her shoes off and go barefoot in Defense class, but the urge still crossed her mind anyway. The tall blonde looked around eagerly, eyes picking out the various items in the room, the layout, Hirsch himself, and then, more importantly, friends.

WHERE WOULD SHE SIT TODAY? WHO WOULD SHE WORK WITH? This was the most important decision in any lesson, everyone knew that.

"Hi professor!" She added, not wanting him to feel ignored.

TEDDY! AVA! She chose a cushion next to her yearmates and stretched out, seemingly unconcerned about the moving box.

It wasn't that she WASN'T curious mind you, it was just that it would only be moments before she'd get to see anyway, that was how Hirsch worked, and for now she could look around and take in the rest of the set up. For instance, the presence of the grass.

Had anyone brought snacks?

First Divination, then Defense? It wasn't that she minded mornings; NO. Skylar actually PREFERRED morning classes, in most situations. But lately she hadn't felt like going to class, thank you to the false rumors. Yet also thank you must go out to Olivia Holden, as she'd made the decision to ignore said rumors. Why had she underestimated that girl again? Oh, because dangerous situations always seemed to happen whenever she was around.

Finger wiggle at Vivian and Junia, the fifth year took a seat on the grass (uh, grass?) somewhat close to Hirsch. Because this was defense and it wasn't exactly one of her strongest subjects. She enjoyed it, yes, but she wanted to be one of the best at defense and was failing miserably. So she was determined to pay EXTRA attention; to not let the talks about her distract her. To do well.

And yes, she was curious about the moving boxes, the rocks, why they were outside but inside, but she was a fifth year. Which meant she knew far better than to investigate before the right time.

Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh.

How about...no? No.

Derf HAD been looking forward to class today and had ALMOST decided to put his grudge against the professor aside (ish), but all that went right out the window when he saw all that GRASS. You know what grass and tall grass should have reminded him of?
Runespoors. But noooooooo...now the Hufflepuff was having visions and flashes of the grass coming to life, wrapping around him, and strangling him.

Evil grass. Evil flesh eating grass.

He had not slept well the night before so his imagination was running a bit rampant and in the WORST way.

The third year couldn't even get excited over the prospect of a creature being in that wiggling box. He was stuck being petrified at the doorway.

So much grass....

Hunter was eyeing the box when he heard his brother's voice.

Whaaaaaa....

He turned to the Slytherin and frowned folding his arms. So the dragon can eat him? Ha! "Pffft..." this was an exclamation for the other boy to show he didnt agree and Hunter always thought it was effective enough. "Pfffts...that is not gonna happen and you know it." Yup. Dragons were awesome creatures. They didn't eat little boys or did they? It didn't matter, no dragon was going to eat Hunter Carter. The boy smirked though. "But if you behave i won't let it eat you cause you are my bro."

Morning classes were the worst ever, even when Emmeline liked the subject normally. DADA was in her top three favorite subjects, so while she was excited about the class and stuff, the fact that it was held in the morning meant that the second year was tired and struggling to concentrate. On anything, really..

Which is how she wound up bumping into Derf. She just hadn't noticed that he was stopping in the doorway and stuff. Emmeline went a bit red 'cause it was silly that she was still doing that to people and quickly turned to her friend: "I'm so sorry, Derf! I was---hang on. What's wrong?" 'Cause she had ALSO been slow to notice that he kind of looked frozen. Frowning slightly, Emmeline edged around the Hufflepuff boy to see what was inside the classroom; Professor Hirsch had turned it into loads of grass and rocks, and there was a biiiiig crate that was wriggling. She hoped it was a cool creature or something. But she didn't see any big plants or anything else that would explain Derf's nerves.

Soo she kept scanning the classroom to try to find whatever was upsetting Derf, and as she did so, she noticed Stasya had totally saved her a seat. Which was awesome; Stasya was the best ever, really. She waved and grinned at Stasya from the doorway; she didn't really want to walk over there until Derf was feeling better, though. Not if she could maybe help or something.

It wasn't long before the first set of students started to pour in, something he was all too glad about. Standing there with a box full of pesky creatures was a little boring, truth be told, even if he was trying his hardest to ignore it. A smile flitted across the man's face as he noticed exactly who the first student was. "Hello, Kyle! Doing well, I hope?"

And he noticed the look towards the box but wasn't going to say anything about it just yet. It would only ruin the element of surprise.

It might still be too early to say anything but it was nice to see that the students were curious about the contents of the box while exercising that curiosity with a bit of caution. This was Defence Against the Dark Arts, after all. Constant vigilance needed to be practiced at all times.

"Good morning, Mr Kovalainen," he said, giving the boy a smile. And he was sitting near the front? Good good.

Of course.

Heading in, she stopped short when she saw grass on the ground inside the classroom. She should not have been surprised with Hirsch. But yet, she was. She examined the classroom more and noticed the rocks from last year were back. And there was a box that twitched. Hmm... interesting.

Oh and there was Hirsch.

Noelle grinned widely at the man. "Hey professor!" She said and waved at him before going to sit on one of the cushions. She missed the man. But they kept in touch due to some exercises that he'd sent for her to do. He'd be seeing her in the training room of course.

Now, back to that box. What were they going to be doing today?

It wasn't surprising to see Noelle here so early and he had a feeling that the weird setup of the room might not have been a surprise to her either. Regardless, that look on her face and the way she was looking around the room amused the man. "Hey, Noelle! Been training hard?" A stupid question, really, because he didn't expect anything else from her.

And yes, he did need to ask her about the internship she'd been on.

If they were sorta kinda somewhat outside ish to an extent, didn't that mean that the lesson would be about dragons? It only made sense. Plus, if Zoryn asked every single day, he was bound to say yes at some point. It was pure science. Zoryn knew how statistics worked.

The Gryffindor WAS SO READY FOR DRAGONS!!!!!!!!!!!

Never mind the fact that the box was way too small to hold enough dragons for the entire class. Maybe they were just really small dragons. Mhm.

sounds legit.

And now she was gonna go sit next to Noelle!!

If there was ever a day in which Zoryn Spinnet didn't excitedly ask whether they were learning about dragons, Hirsch would give up coffee.

Really.

The man chuckled at the question and shook his head. "Sorry to disappoint you, Zoryn, but not today. One day, maybe." He'd have to have a word with Tristan the next time he saw him and maybe suggest this lesson idea. "I like your level of enthusiasm for them, though. Keep it up!" And hopefully, she would be just as enthusiastic about the actual lesson plan as she was about dragons.

Well, this was an interesting question, wasn't it? He hardly expected anyone to be asking about the schematics behind the room but here she was, asking him exactly how he'd gone about magicking it to make it look the way it did. It was a pleasant surprise, if anything.

"Morning, Miss Bellaire," he said, shooting her a smile, "Transfiguration to make the floor more grass-like, with a few charms added in for good measure." Just to make sure it lasted as long as it did. "Nice question, by the way."

"Uh, good...morning Professor Hirsch" She said, clearing her throat and finally giving him a smile.

Something else that had taken him by surprise? That small slip. Hirsch opened his mouth and had even leaned away from the wall, on his way to see if she was okay, when she seemed to be gathering herself? Er? Should he ask.....?

He was going to ask.

"Good morning, Miss Baeva. Are you okay?"

The Professor was standing next to a wooden box. Maisie's keen mind couldn't help wondering what he had planned for the lesson. The box was definitely moving. Maisie smiled politely at the teacher and stepped carefully past it.

There were a lot of rocks in the room, lined up against one wall. Maisie kept her eyes on those instead. The box was making her nervous.

Shy was the first word to come to mind. Shy and polite. It wasn't a bad combination but it did make the man curious as to what her magical capabilities might be. She was one of his students, after all. "Hello, Miss Dimple," he said, returning the smile with one of his own and giving her a nod of his head.

And was he going to say anything about her reaction to the box? Nope. It probably wasn't as bad as it looked.

Who said Hogwarts was boring?! NOT BEAU. Definitely not BEAU-EY.

"HELLLLLLLLLO SIRRRRRRRRR"

From the shy to the loud.

Hirsch was completely taken aback by the loudness of the next student to enter the room but there was something else that surprised him even more. Dragons? He looked between Mr Montague and Zoryn, silently wondering whether dragons were that popular amongst the student body. They weren't going to start protesting against attending lessons until they got a dragon-based lesson, were they?

Regardless, there was a slightly amused smile on his face as he said, "Hello, Mr Montague. No dragons today, sorry."

"Hey Professor Hirsch!" the Curly Top called out gleefully as he passed the Defense Instructor, making a minor mental note on the wriggling box. Curious little thing, but it doesnt have quite a strong of a draw as the green green grass of home. For now anyway. So down he goes... rollin' rollin.

Students were amusing. Fact.

Hirsch tilted his head slightly, watching the all too gleeful Gryffindor Prefect look as though he was a toddler who'd just been let out in a large, welcoming field. In fact, he could almost see a small curly-haired Tenacius rolling around on the grass, not caring about the grass stains he was accumulating.

It was nice.

"Hey, Tenacius! Glad you're enjoying all the grass."

Meaning every morning lesson was greeted with Dahlia dragging her feet over the threshold of the classrooms.

And today she was beginning to think her lack of sleep the night before was messing with her mind. Because she swore there wasn't grass last time. Stopping upon entry, Dahlia looked down at her feet and shuffled them across the grass. Huh. Looking up again she spotted the rocks and the cushions and the......moving box. There was a moving box. In a DADA class that wasn't going to end well, was it?

"Morning, Professor Hirsch." She didn't once take her eyes off the box as she wandered over towards the already assembled students. Please don't kill me. My hexes aren't up to par yet.

Unfortunately, Hirsch didn't have enough power to rectify the timings of the lessons or the school timetable altogether. If he did, he might have suggested classes starting a little later so that the students could get some sleep in. But, alas.

The observation of the grass and, in turn, the room in general was slightly amusing but he didn't say anything about it. Not yet, anyways. "Morning, Miss Marin," he said, shooting her a smile and a nod of his head. And he wouldn't hold it against her if her hexes weren't up to par yet. She was only a first year, after all.

Nevertheless, she found it useful and interesting. One day - hopefully sooner rather than later, considering OWLs were this year - she'd get the hang of the whole magic thing.

When she entered the classroom, she immediately noticed the grassy floor and stopped in her tracks. She then noticed the box at the front of the classroom, which appeared to be.... shaking? O....kay then. Shrugging her confusion off, she made a beeline for Luci and nabbed the cushion next to hers, actively ignoring the obnoxiously loud first, second and third years. Gosh, did they ever shut up? Rhea glanced across at her dormmate and gave her a look. "It's gonna be one of those lessons, isn't it?" Even though that wasn't necessarily a bad thing, she made sure to say it quietly enough so Professor Hirsch wouldn't hear. Then, louder and with a half-smile, she greeted the Professor. "Good morning, Professor."

It was always amusing to see how students reacted to the different setups of his classroom. He, of course, knew why it looked the way it did and why it was so important for the lesson but the students didn't. It was only natural that they were curious - and he was curious to know what assumptions they came up with.

And luckily for the Ravenclaw, he had no idea what it is that she said. None whatsoever.

"Good morning, Miss Durant." Smile.

"Hello Professor." Jessa greeted, curious beyond belief about the rattling and rumbling on the inside. Was the box magically extended on the inside? Maybe there were dragons in there after all. The Ravenclaw tugged lightly at a few locks of Julie's hair as she moved passed her and her grass inspection to come to a stop by one of the stones. What was in here?

Without giving it much thought, the young girl was on her knees, ears to the rock. Could whatever was inside talk? Could it communicate some other way?

What was Jessa doing?!

At this point, Hirsch was used to the girl's curious nature. She was in his house, after all, and he had worked with her for her extra studies but this..... this was something else. Head tilted and eyebrows furrowed, he watched as the girl approached one of the rocks and pressed her ear to it? Was she trying to hear something....?

So the fifth year had been going to all the lessons and continuing to put her best foot forward and as she made her way to the latest class, she was just as prepared. And the grass the classroom didn’t surprise her much if at all. Constant vigilance. Not to mention her very OWL had had nature where cold stone had been. Expect the unexpected was the name of the game at Hogwarts and the wizarding world as a whole.

“Good morning, Professor,” she greeted with a smile as she crossed the grass and took in the rest of the classroom’s features. The rocks looked familiar for sure. And then there was the large wooden…wiggling box that resided at the front of the room. Experience taught that it was wise not to move closer and try to find out just what it was about. Cass wasn’t a cat or a Gryffindor lion, she’d wait the curiosity out as she settled into a spot on the ground to await the start of the lesson.

Something he liked seeing? Constant vigilance! And the fact that the girl was not at all surprised about the layout of the room. Was it any wonder that she'd gotten an Outstanding for her Defence OWL?

Which, yes, was something he was very proud about.

A wide, dimpled smile spread across the man's face before he said, "Good morning, Cassie!" Curiosity did kill the cat, didn't it?

And here was another case of constant vigilance!

Hirsch was starting to feel very, very proud right about now.

The wide, dimpled smile stayed on his face as he watched the Slytherin. The scanning of the grass, the look she had given the box...... it was all noted. "Good morning, Junia," he said, returning the curtsey with a small bow of his head. It was only polite, see.

And it showed in the way he walked through the classroom door, taking the grass in stride as he shot his favourite non-Uncle an easy smile and wave from the back of the classroom.

Looking over the room, Remy noted the grass and the rocks and of course the wiggling box that was resting by Roderick Professor Hirsch’s feet. Hmmm/ Taking a step to the side, he looked the box over once more, trying to figure out what could fit inside it. It couldn’t be a water creature since cardboard - although, there could have been a tank inside the box… But there didn’t seem to be any sloshing, so that didn’t seem likely.

Apparently, a few of his classmates were hoping for dragons - but that didn’t seem too likely either as the cardboard box was likely to have gone up in flames from fire by now. Hmmmm. Perhaps a Vampire Bat? That would be fun.

With another grin in Hirsch’s direction, Remy moved over to lounge near the front but off to the side so that the shorter students could see once the class started. With one hand resting backwards on the grass, he waited for the class to start. Though he kept looking at the wiggling box. What. Was. In. There??

It was always interesting to see what the students made of the mystery box. Sure, he didn't think any of them could correctly guess what was inside, but the curiosity was nice to see. Nothing like a bit of curiosity to get those brains working, was there?

A small smirk spread across his face before he said, "Hey Remy." Observe away, he was curious to see what the students made of the box, even if all will be revealed soon.

That was better, she'd have to reapply it or stand near someone who was just always warm.

Everything was going as planned until Vi took one step forward towards the classroom door and found her foot landing on something softer than stone. Squishy too. She glanced down at her feet and saw there were tuffs of grass there. She stepped further into the room to find herself not in the usual classroom but instead in a grassy area- a plain or something? There were familiar rocks in the center but the object that stood out the most was a wooden box. The first time it wriggled nearly caused Vi to jump. Oh for Merlin's sake! She hadn't been expecting it to move like that.

Catching her breath, she took a step into the grassy classroom and walked over to Professor Hirsch who always seemed unfazed by everything. She'd guessed that was what you would have to do when you were the Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor. "Hello Professor! How are you?" she asked, always making sure to ask about how he was faring. Professors were people to, y'know. With a quick side glance to the box, she pursed her lips for a second and then smirked, remembering one of the lessons from last year where they dealt with inferi, mummies, and zombies. "No inferi today, right?" she asked, pretending to frown a little bit. Oh man. How she had been looking forward to that. She shivered a little and remembered that it was still slightly chilly. She'd have to cast another heating charm.

Making her way over to the group of students, she spotted Ace and started walking in his direction. "Sup Solo!" she called out to the boy that had just done a 360 degree turn or something. Huh. How interesting. Soon enough she was by Ace. "Hey! What do you think is in that box?"

Was the Gryffindor scared of a little wriggling box? Or was she just taken aback by the way it moved? Hirsch glanced from the girl, to the box, and then back again. He had to admit: the reactions he was getting to something like a wriggling box was highly amusing. Maybe he should have more mysterious objects in his lessons, more for his benefit than anything else.

"Hello, Miss Holden! I'm doing very well, thank you. How are you?" Inferi? He glanced again at the box and, chuckling, shook his head. "No Inferi, I promise." He didn't think he could get one boxed up but that wasn't something he was about to mention.

This was amazing. The entire class being on grass while the whole castle was stone. If there had to be stone, there already were some anyway. The young Gryffindor started at the rocks curiously, wondering why they were there before his dark brown eyes moved on the professor "Good morning, sir" and then...to the box.

IT WAS MOVING!!!!

Mouth open, Hunter started with amazement and curiosity. What was it in the box? Oooh since there was a lot of grass, it could be a hungry cow that wanted to get out of the box so she could eat.

But why would the DADA teacher would put a cow in a box?

And where was Ryder? Lazy Ryder wasn't in the class yet.

Then he heard someone say DRAGONS....

Unable to hold his excitement, the Gryffindor boy spoke loudly with excitement hoping the person who mentioned dragons would hear him.

"WHERE ARE THE DRAGONS????!!!!!"

Cause dragons were awesome.

This was a nice reaction, wasn't it? The look of wonder and amazement that came with seeing a surprise. A nice surprise, he hoped. "Good morning, Mr Carter," he said, giving the boy a smile and a nod of his head. He watched the boy, noting how curious he seemed to be about the box near Hirsch and silently wondering what kind of conclusion he was drawing from-

..........

Oh Merlin.

Green eyes flew over towards Zoryn and Mr Montague and then back at Mr Carter. What was it with Gryffindors and their obsession with dragons? It was nice, sure, but he was starting to wonder whether he should be worried that they were going to petition for a dragon-based lesson anytime soon.

But now, he had to worry about something else: possibly breaking the first year's heart. This was not how this lesson was supposed to go. "There..... are no dragons, sorry. It will be a fun lesson, though."

Oh no, that didn't look good. Not that she didn't trust Hirsch for this, but anything inanimate that happened to be moving wasn't usually a good sign.

But first, her DADA song! "But I keep cruising, can't stop, won't stop moving..." Vivian swayed her head side to side as she sang, and went to go sit beside Junia. She got finger wiggles from the blond. "It's like I got this music in my mind, saying it's gonna be alright!" Honestly, she didn't know why that song fell into her head, but it was probably because the creatures, possibly, inside the box were shaking it off. Get it?

Was it surprising that Vivian Fairfield was early for a lesson? Not at all. Just like it wasn't surprising to see her skipping and grinning as she did so. There was nothing quite like a Defence lesson in the morning to wake you up, was there? His classes were, after all, action-packed, something he always made sure of. But the way Mr Botros was entering the room, looking as though he'd hardly slept, made the man worried. A sleepy brain wasn't good for constant vigilance and self-defence and, more importantly, learning. Did he need to go back and take a nap, instead?

Isa was someone who, he knew, struggled with his lessons.

Something he noticed the minute Stasya walked in? How much happier she was looking. Considering how she was when she came to see him the day after the feast, this was a huge relief to see. Whatever it was she was doing seemed to be working and for that, Hirsch couldn't be happier.

"Good morning, Stasya. How're you feeling?" A general, innocent question but one that she might understand why he was asking in the first place.

Nathan sat down on the grass and leaned back to watch whatever was in that wriggling box. Things hardly surprise him, nowadays. He yawned.

'Too cool for school' was the first thing to come to his mind when he saw this next student to enter the room. Hirsch pushed his glasses further up his nose as he observed the boy, noting how bored he looked and the way he didn't seem to have any care. Did he say anything? No, but the man couldn't help but be slightly worried as to what this could mean about the boy's willingness to be here.

Hmm.

The next student to enter the room earned himself a slightly amused smile. It was nice, really, to know that the students cared so much about the lesson that they wanted to be here on time. Or was it simply because he was scary enough to induce the need to be here on time?

Though, on second thought, he wasn't exactly scary enough, was he?

The grin stayed on his face at the greeting and, especially, at the enthusiastic way he was waving. "Hey, Mr Katharos. Had a nice run?" He certainly hoped so.

Though, he didn't go and investigate. Instead, he picked a cushion towards the front of class and plopped down with a "Hello, Professor Hirsch."

Now, what's in the box?

Did he notice the look of curiosity on the boy's face? He did. Was he going to say anything about it? Not at all. After all, where was the fun in just telling them what was in there? Drag it out, let them be curious for a while. It might be good for them.

Anyways. Greeting. "Hey, Mr Carter."

...... Another Carter? Should he be worried?

"Hello Professor Hirsch," Teddy greeted the man as he walked past. He saw his classmates sitting on cushions, and was very thankful to see them. Even if the grass here didn't give him an itch, he didn't want to attempt sitting on it. So he went towards some of Ava's friends and sat down, NOT looking at the box. Okay, he was totally looking at it. Every time it moved, he felt a drop of sweat roll down his spine, making him shiver. He wasn't sure he wanted to find out what it was.

Was it just him or did Mr Burton look slightly more nervous than normal?

Eyebrows furrowed, he watched the Ravenclaw, trying to see if he could notice any other signs to tell him if it was one or the other. Was it the lesson? The setup? The box? Hm. Hopefully, it wasn't something to worry about otherwise he would have to keep the boy behind and ask.

"Hello, Mr Burton," he said, giving him a reassuring smile as he did so. There was nothing to worry about, okay?

"Hello, professor." She greeted the professor with a cheerful smile before taking a seat somewhere near the front of the classroom. The girl pulled out a parchment and quill, ready for class to begin.

The Hufflepuff Prefect looked cheerful, didn't she? Was she enthusiastic about the lesson? He certainly hoped so. It did make teaching a little bit easier and more enjoyable if the students themselves were enthusiastic about learning in the first place.

"Hello, Miss Kramer," he said, returning the smile with one of his own. And she was getting ready for some note taking? Someone had come prepared, hadn't they?

Good! Very good.

She greeted the man while managing her breath.

It wasn't like Ava to be almost late for his lesson but, considering the year she was in and what was coming up, this wasn't exactly a surprise. Seventh year was no joke and it showed. It was probably because of this reason that he gave her a sympathetic smile as she entered. "Hey, Ava!"

And he still needed to ask her about that internship of hers.

Charlotte's enthusiasm hadn't gone unnoticed and whether it was because of the layout of the room or the class, he was just glad that it was there in the first place. It made a difference, especially from a teaching perspective.

"Hey, Charlotte!" he said, giving her a smile. Not phased by the box? Was she too used to his lesson style? Maybe he needed to add more surprises to his lessons.

The quietness of a student wasn't something that usually worried Hirsch. After all, some students just didn't want to talk, did they? But there was something about the quietness of Miss Diggory's entrance and the lack of a greeting that made him slightly worried. OWLs weren't getting the better of her already, were they?

He didn't say anything, though, but he did give her a nod and a smile. Hello!

So much grass....

........... Er.

Hirsch blinked. Out of all the reactions he thought he'd receive for the setup of the room, he didn't expect this to be one of them. Apart from the wriggling of the box, he didn't see what was so scary or worrying about the room itself. The box itself wasn't something to worry about so he didn't understand what was causing this reaction from the Hufflepuff.

Moving forwards slightly, he bent down slightly and whispered, "Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne, are you okay? Is something wrong?"

It wasn't long before another student entered the room, bumping into the Hufflepuff as she did so. He shot her a smile as she stood there but didn't say anything just yet, not when Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne seemed to be rooted to the spot. "C'mon, there's nothing to worry about in here." And he might like the lesson itself, who knows.

When it looked as though no one else was coming, Hirsch took out his wand and flicked it at the door, making it close with a sharp SNAP! If that didn't get people's attention, he didn't know what would.

"Good morning and welcome to another Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson!" he called, moving to the front of the room, an excited smile on his face, "Today, I want to cover a topic that you might not consider too much when you're in danger and introduce a new spell to you." So no, there were no dragons here today. Sorry, Gryffindors.

"In these lessons, you're always taught about dark creatures, beings or spells and how to defend yourselves against them. But the problem is, there is never always a clear distinction between what's dark or not. Take people, for example. Not everyone is clearly good or bad; people are grey and their intentions are what makes their actions, ultimately, good or dark. The same goes for spellwork, with the Unforgivables being an exception." Were they following? He hoped so.

"In this sense, not every creature you face is going to be out to attack you, even if they've been classified as a dark creature. Some, like dementors for example, you should always attack because they won't lose an opportunity to attack you." And no one wanted to lose their soul, did they? "But there are some others that you shouldn't attack unless they are particularly ruthless because their main objective isn't to attack you. As surprising as it's going to sound, there are cases in which you should just leave the creature alone and they'll leave you alone."

Breathe.

"So my first question is: can anyone give me a situation or a circumstance in which you should NOT attack a creature in your path? Why might it be wrong to pull out your wand and start throwing random spells here and there?" Let's get those brains thinking, shall we?

OOC: Ohmygooooosh look at this turnout ;____; *fangirls* Class has officially started so please keep chatter to a minimum! If you haven't posted already and want to, feel free to jump in! Just pretend as though your charrie has been there the entire time ^^

The question is a simple one: why might it be wrong to attack a creature you're faced with? What kind of situation covers this? There is no right or wrong answer to this, so feel free to think outside of the box. We want to see how your charrie thinks! Also, please be considerate of other people's answers and not repeat any!

If the question/wording is confusing/doesn't make sense, please do give me a nudge and I'll be happy to clarify it for you <3

I'll continue this lesson tomorrow at roughly 8pm GMT+1.

Thanks, lovelies!

No Inferi? Seriously Hirsch? She pouted slightly. She had been hoping for a challenge, y'know? However, the lesson began before she could say anything else and they were talking about how sometimes its important to leave a creature alone and not attack it because they would leave you alone too.

Huh interesting topic. She wondered how her classmates would react to such a question. But the whole idea of people and creatures not being clearly good or bad and the various shades of grey involved intrigued the Gryffindor to no end.

Well as much as Olivia loved pulling out her wand and attacking a creature straightaway (#Gryffindoring), she knew that would just end miserably and horribly. It seemed silly to just go up and attack said creature. "Well a reason not to attack a creature is because you could come across a creature that could easily overpower you, Professor. If you went up against and started flinging spells at a strong creature, such as a basilisk, then that would be..." Stupid, in her opinion. Don't pull a Harry Potter kids. It probably doesn't work out that way for the rest of them. Vi rephrased the word she was going to use, "That wouldn't be the smartest. Doing something like that could get yourself killed." Or worse expelled. Sometimes creatures were more focused on protecting their young than fighting off a young, brazen wizard who was just eager to prove themselves to their friends. As for a situation where you shouldn't attack a creature...."For instance, a creature could be focused on protecting its young and view you as a threat. Instead of attacking it, you should give the creature its space and be on your way."

That box was still moving, and Dahlia still had her eyes fixed on it. Her ears, however, they were trained on the professor. Obviously. She was incredibly interested in what they were going to be doing, and curious as to whether any of them would get out alive, or at best need a trip to the hospital wing.

And then the question came, and she finally - for a few seconds at least - looked away and gave the man her full attention. Which was just as well she did, because it wasn't the easiest thing to answer. Biting her lip, she frowned and squinted and thought of a scenario that would fit, but she wasn't really getting anything that he might be happy with. Or that she was happy with.

"Uhh, maybe, I don't know, Sir.....maybe if it's a crowded area? If there's loads of people around, then shooting hexes at something might annoy it and cause it to lash out at those people. Whereas if you left it, then it might go away without doing that?"

That made sense, right? Well, it was an answer anyway, and the best she was going to come up with. That box had made her brain nervous.

He's been so sleepy since he rolled himself out of bed and slid into the class, and now is no different. Up until the professor begins to speak, the chatter around Kei lulls him into a light doze, kept in tune with the rattling of the box.

Then the door closes - the sharp noise is, truthfully, exactly what he needs to wake, and he shakes his head to clear it a bit.

Grey areas are his favorite things to discuss - he relates to them, he thinks - not one thing, not the other. Muddled. Confusing, maybe even confused as well. So at the question, his hand raises tentatively, thinking so as not to copy another's already-spoken answer.

"A creature may not even realize you're there, due to low lighting or poor senses. Or maybe it's just woken up," he offers, leaning forward in his seat. "It may be more scared of us than we are of them!"

Junia was feeling the pressure whether it was stated or not, Professor H. After her chat with Healer Reed about focusing on healing and the marks she'd need to pursue it, her mind was focused on certain subjects, Defense being one of them. She'd be paying particular attention in this class, she would.

Vivian's arrival earned a smile and the fifth year nudged her friend gently when she sat beside her. She'd caught Sky's greeting as well, and returned the finger wiggle with one of her own. They'd all be comparing notes later, yes? It was reassuring knowing that if she missed something, one of them were bound to get it down. It gave her a little room to breathe. A little.

And then there was an Abey. Junia moved her arm around him and gave him a bit of a squeeze in greeting. Was he alright? He'd better be getting enough sleep or she'd be speaking to the boys he shared a dorm with, she would. He shouldn't be up all night jumping on beds or gossiping or snacking or whatever Gryffindor boys did at that age. Noting Professor Hirsch's look, the fifth year nodded her head. She had this. "Abey, it's time to pay attention, okay? If you're not feeling well, I could always ask to escort you to the healer or something." But if it was just the being sleepy thing, it was time to shake it off.

Sitting up a bit straighter, she considered Hirsch's question, gaze shifting to the box briefly before returning to him. "If the creatures you're mentioning don't see us as prey, that means they're focused on other things. It also means they'll most likely only harm us if they see us as a threat. If you're out walking in the woods or wherever and come across a creature minding it's own business, the best thing to do is go back the way you came. Shooting spells at it will only kick it into survival mode and then you're really in trouble. It's like picking a fight. Why do it if you can avoid it and keep the creature and yourself safe?"

Kitty watched the box curiously, wondering what form of creature or animated object was struggling to get out. They'd find out soon enough, first it was question time - usually her favorite part of any lesson.

The first question was interesting. It was sort of philosophical as well as tactical, in her opinion. She raised her hand when it was her turn to speak. "If the creature doesn't seem like it's going to harm me or anyone else, then I wouldn't attack it. Attacking a creature that's minding its own business would only increase the chances of someone getting hurt, and for what? For example, trolls are dangerous. But if I was walking through a forest and I stumbled upon a troll taking a nap, I'd just tip toe around it and be on my way."

Sooooo.......was there a creature in the box?

Anyway, the concept that Professor Hirsch was getting at wasn't something that was particularly new to Ronan. It was pretty much an accepted concept by now. Also, there were certain creatures where 'don't attack first' was pretty much a life rule. Like momma bears, for example. Or...

"It's pretty much a rule of thumb not to 'attack' or swat at a bee, lest it sting you, cause they'll usually just buzz" pun maybe intended "right by you unless they feel like they, their hive or their queen is under attack." Then they sting and right after they sting, they die. Though, Ronan wasn't really sure about that last bit. But, seeing as one usually couldn't find the bee after being stung, maybe? Either way, it was usually a good idea not to mess with bees.

Okay, there was one thing for sure. Maddie was NOT going to be able to keep calm in this class. For one, the entire place looked nothing like a regular classroom. Then there were the rocks and that large box that looked like it might open itself any second now. Maddie's eyes widened as she watched it, her imagination running wild with what might be inside. She fidgeted a bit in an effort to get out some of the energy she was trying to hold in. It was impossible, though.

THIS WAS TOO EXCITING.

Then the door shut, and the lesson was beginning. People were gray? Huh? What did that mean? Maddie decided not to ask and instead just listened quietly for once. OHHHHHHHH. They were going to be talking about creatures?! BEST. CLASS. EVERRRR. It was hard for her to think about creatures attacking her. She always thought of creatures as cute and cuddly, but deep down inside, she knew that wasn't always the case. She raised her hand as a thought came to mind. "There's ERUMPENTS, Professor. I don't think they attack unless they're provoked," she pointed out. "So it kind of seems like somebody would just be out to pick a fight if they attacked one."

Nathan thought for a moment when Hirsh asked them a question. It was common sense not to provoke the creatures fury. The more it felt threatened, the higher chance it will attack and pummels you to death. But what if the creature got injured and in need of medical care? Or simply because they wanted to protect their young? That's especially true with female grizzly bears with cubs, they were dangerous...aren't they? You don't want to be anywhere near them. Sometimes observing how the creatures react if they sensed certain dangers could be a vital sign to avoid unnecessary incidents. That was his answer in his head, all the time staying quiet.

So... all that hype led Katy to wonder what exactly was IN that box? Was it really a creature? Because Hirsch was being so nonchalant about standing with his shoulder literally inches away from great teeth or claws or something. That's how handsome men lose arms.

But it was an interesting question, and Katy jotted a few notes based on her classmates' answers. She also raised her hand and tried not to make faces at the Head Girl... Katherine Toussaint was SO mature. "Professor, we don't just attack people because they're present and intimidating. We wait for tangible evidence that we're in danger, or we leave if the situation warrants. I'd think it's the same for animals, even dangerous ones. A lot of them are live and let live types, unless they feel threatened. There's no need to provoke a creature."

Why might it be wrong to start attacking creatures? That was a silly question! Scarlett's hand immediately went in the air.

"Well obviously, if a creature isn't paying you any mind, if you provoke it, then it will DEFINITELY feel threatened and will likely attack you. You have to remember that they are more scared of you than you are of them, and they are likely trying to just lay low and not draw attention to themselves either,"
she explained. Sure, some of them were really nasty, but if you didn't bother them, they usually didn't bother you.

It was like bees. If you didn't bother them, you probably weren't going to get stung!
