It was a very cold night at the end of January, but Tristan had taken every precaution to make sure his students stayed warm. Around the immediate area where they would be working he used multiple warming spells to make sure that no one was cold. Working outside in these conditions would be a little difficult, but this lesson was going to be totally worth it. He also put out the hay bales for students to sit on in a semi circle and put individual Bluebell flames in jars at each bale, in case the students wanted to warm their hands when they sat down.
It was close to midnight, when the full moon was almost at it's peak. Tristan had forgone his normal hay bale masterpiece and just sat in a camp chair waiting for the students to arrive. He also had a table full of cups and two cauldrons; one full of hot chocolate and the other full of warm apple cider. Professor Wayland leaned back in his chair, hot chocolate in hand, and patiently waited for his students to arrive.

She was tired and too cold for her liking, but Junia was curious. The timing of the lesson was unusual and she knew that to be outside at this time of year, at this time of night, there would have to be a way for the class to keep safe and warm. She wasn't wrong, either. Bundled up and walking quickly, the fifth year felt the heat wash over her as she stepped closer to the hay bales. "Evening Professor." She curtsied as she was known to do and moved towards the beverages.
After helping herself to some warm apple cider, the Slytherin claimed a seat and took a long sip. Mm, that was good.

She didn't know about anyone else, but Jessa liked these night classes that were happening on the odd occasion. If she was gonna be up around midnight anyway, then she might as well be doing something constructive. Besides that, the topics that got taught at night were usually so much more interesting.
Think about it, there were only so many creatures that could only be studied at night so the Ravenclaw was awake and ready.
Her own warming charms seemed to be complemented by ones set in place once she approached the area the class would be taking place in. "Hey Professor." She chirped, oddly awake for this atrocious hour. "Hey Junia."
Oh and hot chocolate. Don't mind if she did.

It was freezing and late and Katy wasn't amused. Obviously there was something vital about this lesson that required them to be out and about at night, but after the destruction of everything she owned, including her favorite warm socks and mittens, she wasn't feeling particularly generous.
"Hullo, Professor. Nice... night for class, hm?" Or not really, but no reason to be rude about it.

It was a cold walk down to class, but Natalie sighed and shivered when she entered the charmed, WARM area where class was being held. What was with classes being so late at night?! Astronomy made sense, but she sure was curious about what night creatures they would be learning about today. Err, tonight.
"Oh, yes!" Natalie exclaimed softly when she spotted the steaming cauldrons. She could smell the hot cocoa already and she hurried up to the tables to pour herself a cup. "Hello, professor. Thanks for the cocoa." She gave him a smile and then went back and plopped her bum onto a hay. Blowing on her cocoa to cool it off, Natalie glanced back occasionally at incoming students to see if Derf or Liam were close behind.

Oliver was a bit sleepy, considering the late hour. But during the walk down to the grounds the cold air on his face had woken him up. He was getting a bit chilly and was happy to walk into the area protected by warming spells. The hot beverages were also a plus. He went over to the cauldron of hot chocolate and helped himself to a glass. He took a sip and went to sit on a bale of hay next to one of the jars of bluebell flame. Now that he was feeling warm and comfy he was getting tired again. He blinked, trying not to doze off before the lesson started. He wanted to be alert so he could actually pay attention.
Midnight CoMC lessons were surprisingly the best ever, 'cause they gave Emmeline the chance to stay out all night at the baby creature barn until it was time to leave for class. Sirius usually got kinda sleepy a couple hours before midnight, but there was always some sort of baby creature wide awake and willing to say hi. Plus, since she'd already been outside for ages, Emmeline was already dressed to combat the cold weather.
Still, she shivered a little as she made the short trip from the creature barns over to Professor Wayland's hut. The second year promptly settled onto a hay bale super close to the fire and wrapped her hands around the bluebell flames jar. She was kinda surprised that the professor wasn't on his usual hay-throne tonight, but she supposed camp chairs were okay too. Emmeline shot Professor Wayland a cheery smile, and called out from her hay bale: "Hiiiii, Professor Wayland!!" Everyone that she knew in the class got waves and "hiii"s too, mhm. She honestly couldn't wait to get started, 'cause they had to be studying a super, EXTRA interesting creature if they had to come out at night and stuff.

For a moment, Skylar had to double-check her schedule, because Care of Magical Creatures was NEVER this late, especially on a cold January evening. And to walk on the grounds in January; had Wayland lost his mind?! At least Astronomy classes were late, but they didn't have to leave the castle. Fortunately, he had at least mentioned they could dress comfortably for today's lesson, to which meant her morning jogging clothes, with her sweatshirt zipped up to her neck due to the chill outside.
"Evening Professor," She greeted, as she found a seat on a hay bale next to Oliver. Heyyyy Oliver, you don't mind us joining you, right?? Cause that would mean more heat the closer everyone sat to each other.

Zoryn was here despite the grudge she was still holding, the awful weather, and the fact that she would much rather be in bed right now. Fortunately Professor Wayland had sOME decency and made the place warmish. But that's all she had to say about him 'cause Zoryn was gonna do her absolute best to ignore him (sort of).
With that in mind, she walked right past her Professor, made direct eye contact, and didn't say a word.
Instead, she went over and plopped on hay bale right next to another girl (Natalie) and gave her a toothy smile. Yo.

A class at midnight? Now this was certainly going to be interesting. Vi had brought a fresh thermos of Irish breakfast tea with a dash of milk to the class. It was necessary so that she could have something hot to keep her warm on this very, very cold evening. She had started drinking the tea as soon as she had left the castle. So by the time she got down to the lesson's location, she had already drunk all of her tea.
Fortunately when she arrived at the lesson, she saw that the Professor had two cauldrons heating. Hmm... She wondered what they could be. "Hello Professor," she said, greeting the Professor, as she made her way over to take a gander at whatever was in the cauldrons. Ooh... Apple cider and hot chocolate? She filled up her thermos with some hot chocolate. "Thanks Professor!" With that, she took a seat on a hay bale near Skylar and Oliver. She smiled at the two Slytherins."Hey Sky. Hey Oliver!"

Dead of the night, end of January, suffice it to say Tenacius dressed for the occasion. Not that he begrudged being here, quite the opposite actually. It was unusual and its a Creatures class and therefore quite exciting in his book.
He swooped down towards the Professor's abode as he finished off his midnight snack. Tucking his hoverboard into his coat he walked the rest of the way, the aroma of something absolutely delectable leading him by the nose. He arrived with the steaming cauldrons taking his full attention, that snack seeming like a distant memory. Yes indeed he would help himself with some of that hot apple cider thankyouverymuch.
Oh and dont forget the man who prepped all that "Goodmorning Professor Wayland!" he beamed brightly. It is technically the day after last night right? He spotted Vi and plopped himself next to her, spying her drink.

Daisy zipped up her jacket as she made her way to the lesson. She smiled at Professor Wayland and said brightly, "Hello Professor." She could smell the delicious aromas of the two inviting and warm beverages. She poured herself some apple cider and sat down in one of the camp chairs, smiling at the students that were already there.
Daisy took a small sip of cider, the liquid warming her insides.

Another late class? Shay yawned as she arrived for Care of Magical Creatures. Fortunately this was one of her favorite classes, so she doubted she'd have trouble staying awake. But why was it so late? The Gryffindor could not imagine what they would be working on today.......at the midnight hour.
"Hello Professor", Shay said as she made her way to an empty hay bale. First though, she noticed the hot beverages and made a beeline for them. After getting a cup of hot cider, Shay took her seat. She took a sip of her drink and felt the warmth flow into her body. Nothing better on a cold night......except maybe some caffeine. Taking a brief break from drinking, she readied herself for class. Then it was back to sipping, waiting and wondering........what would be the creature of the day.

Having a CoMC lesson this late at night had definitely piqued Stasya’s curiosity. Staying awake was hardly a problem, considering it was creatures. She’d stay awake for creatures every time, and the theory that the timing of the lesson was specific to whatever they were studying today only ramped up her excitement that much more. It was nearly as exciting as getting to meet her baby brother had been, really. She just hoped that she wasn’t going to get back to her dorm after the lesson to find it had been destroyed like others had been, because she’d heard about that. Plus, she’d seen the weird message Kitty had painted in the entrance hall. But weirdness wasn’t going to stop her, and she’d been nibbling on a cookie as she’d walked out to the barn, well-bundled up against the January cold.
As she’d gotten closer to the circle of hay bales, she hadn’t been surprised to see Emmeline already there. Obviously she knew her bestie’s habits, and after stopping to get a cup of cocoa, she’d immediately gone over to sit next to her on her hay bale. Hiiii bestie! And she also waved at Zoryn, Olivia, Skylar, Jessa and Ace because yay.
She’d turned her attention to the professor before he could think she hadn’t noticed him, though. “Hi Professor Wayland! Thank you for the cocoa!,” she said to him brightly, giving him a grin. Derf’s theories and everything considered, she trusted the CoMC professor not to try and dose them with anything. Not when there were creatures to look forward to, which brought her back to wondering what they were studying. Probably not salamanders again. Maybe mooncalves? She didn’t see any, but she felt like she was getting good at guessing the topics of his lessons. Maybe.

Maisie let the wind flow through her loose hair. She was delighted that Care of Magical Creatures was outside at night this time! Maisie's favourite subject was Astronomy, and her passion, the night sky. Another subject offering midnight lessons? It couldn't get better! She wondered what they would be studying. Maisie wasn't as into creatures as she was stars and planets. What kind of creatures came out at night? She hoped it was Mooncalves or centaurs. Things that made her think of the night sky.
She was wearing a long navy dress, with stars embroidered around the hem. The sleeves were long and loose and she could bunch the fabric in her fists. Over her dress she wore a winter cloak. Her dragonhide gloves were tucked into her bag. For now, she was wearing fluffier ones.
Maisie approached the drinks table happily. She chose hot chocolate, said a cheery, "Hello, sir!" to the Professor, and sat down on a hay bale, admiring the pretty blue flames.
A midnight creatures lesson? Interesting. Etta was exhausted and it was WAY too cold but she slowly made her way down to the grounds, constantly shivering but she reached her destination soon enough.. thankfully. She quickly sat down on a hay bale, immediately wrapping her hands around the bluebell jar. Oh, the relief. She enjoyed the warmth for a little before greeting the professor with a small smile.
“Hello, professor.” .. her teeth weren’t chattering anymore. Great. The prefect had a sip of her hot chocolate before greeting a few of her classmates as well. She finally pulled out a parchment and quill, ready for class to begin.

A night out in January…
That wasn’t something Cassie was expecting for a lesson since it proved to be extra cold as the hour got later. Even bundled up in her warm cloak and Ravenclaw scarf and gloves as she made her way down to the barnyard there was still a chill that went through her. Thankfully as she approached the area, it was clear the professor had taken all the necessary precautions to keep them all from getting hypothermia. Including some warm treats.
Awesome.
“Good evening, Professor,” she greeted the man as she set her bookbag down on one of the free bales to claim it. The sixth year careful of the jar containing the bluebell flame. Then she moved to the caldrons and poured herself a mug of hot cider before returning to actually take a seat. There…the warmth helped keep her hands even more toasty. Then she’d be better for the lesson, the girl cautiously sipping on the beverage.

Was Zoryn actually not talking to him? Thank Merlin! He was still upset with her for the stunt she pulled with his Kneazles. He didn't trust that girl at all. He stared right back at her, with a grin on his face.
If she thought she was intimidating him she had another thing coming.

"Hello, Vi! You are very welcome." He said with a wink and grin. He was glad everyone was enjoying the warm drinks. They had a lot to talk about before they got to their activity and he wanted to make sure they were warm.

Tristan quietly stood up, and moved closer to the students. He was feeling nice and warm, so he took his jacket off and tossed it towards his chair, where it landed perfectly in the seat. He grinned at the perfect landing and turned towards the class. "Good evening everyone! And welcome to a very late Care of Magical Creatures lesson." He paused with a grin, "This lesson shouldn't take us too long if we time it right and you will be back in the castle in your warm beds soon enough!" He checked his watch. They had a good 20 minutes before...well they would find out soon enough.
"Before I tell you what animal we will be observing today, I have a couple questions for you!" He paused, pacing back and forth in front of the class to get his wording right. "There are several creatures, magical and non-magical that are nocturnal, which means that they only come out at night. What creatures, magical or not only come out at night? There are also creatures that only come out during a full moon. What creatures only come out with the full moon? And I don't mean Werewolves; though they are creatures in that form, they are still human." He paused, "You may answer either one or both, but please only give one creature to each question to allow everyone to get a chance to answer." He stopped pacing right in front of the class, and crossed his arms waiting for their answers to come pouring in.

The response her cheerful greeting had gotten was only returned by a bright smile. Of course she was excited over the cocoa. It was chocolate, after all, and it was also highly possible Stasya was entirely running on sugar at the moment. Cookies and cocoa, although she’d barely taken a few sips of the latter as the lesson had started. The lesson had started, and it had only made her believe even more that her guess had been right.
And her hand had shot up nearly as soon as he had finished speaking. “Mooncalves! Mooncalves only come out during a full moon.” And she kind of really thought it would be cool to get to see some. Well, and there was the whole matter of the other question too, but that wasn’t quite as exciting. “Oh, and bats are nocturnal usually,” she added at the last second, before returning her hand to its place curled around her cup of cocoa with the other. Just in case her outburst was a bit too awkward, but she couldn’t help it.

Y'know, Zoryn Spinnet was really starting to regret skipping over the warm hot chocolate just about now. If she had some, then she'd be giving in to Professor Wayland. But now she was CRAAAAAVING it. 'Specially since everyone else was sipping on theirs. Man, the things you gotta do to prove a point, huh? Life was rough.
Anyways.
This question was way too easy. Bats, owls, etc. The list went on and on and Zoryn didn't really care to state the obvious. She was a THIRD year now and had to step up her game. The Gryffindor raised her hand and waited until her turn to state her answer, "Fifth years, Professor," studying for their OWLs really messed up their sleeping schedule. Zor had noticed MHM.
Actually, did it count if they never slept? Because Zoryn was pretty sure she hadn't seen any of 'em get a wink of sleep.
Man, she did NOT envy those poor guys.

Jessa received a smile in greeting, as did the other familiar faces as they entered the heated space and got settled. She was thankful the class was filing in because the sooner the lesson got going, the sooner she could be back in bed and catching up on some much needed Zzzzzzzs.
Nocturnal animals. Bats were the first to come to mind, though those had been mentioned already. Fifth years, though? Junia stifled a laugh, amused. Thanks small Gryffindor person, she'd needed that.
"Badgers, professor. Badgers are nocturnal." The Slytherin nodded her head and then took a sip of her cider.

Oh and it didn't take long before Olivia was on her other side; see, closer they sat to each other the warmer it would be. Smile at Olivia and Tenacius too, who was at her side. And no, Professor, not too cold in workout clothes. They were her winter workout clothes, which were admittedly warmer when she was jogging, but you know, can't have everything. She was good though with being surrounded by her peers and these bluebell flames.
And good, class was starting, which meant she could get back to her dorm soon enough. Or if it lasted too long, skip sleep all together to just go for that jog earlier than normal. Whatever worked, and they were talking about nocturnal creatures, to which she had to stifle a giggle at Zoryn Spinnet. The girl might not have been the sharpest crayon in the box, but that answer though. Almost distracted her from her focus. Touché, Zoryn, touché. Fifth years were nocturnal, among a whole host of other things that she would not be getting into during this lesson. Or well, probably ever with the third year.
"Certain types of snakes can be nocturnal too." You know, to go along with the badgers that Junia mentioned.

Derf had been quiet since arriving, mostly because he HAD been napping prior to class and only woken up about ten minutes later than he had intended to and thus had SPRINTED down to the grounds and was too exhausted - for a multitude of reasons - to greet the professor appropriate.
That...and he was ALSO eyeing the moon LOADS because it was FULL and it was NIGHT...
...and then the professor was asking them about nocturnal creatures.
Of course, he WAS inclined to agree with Stasya's answer because that DID seem the more appropriate form of education for a group of students given CIRCUMSTANCES at Hogwarts. Which DID raise some concern. WHY were they allowed OUTSIDE on the grounds THIS late at night with STUFF happening like it was? What if someone - or SOMETHING - were to try and snatch them while they were out here? It WAS dark...
But before he could get himself completely off track and spiraling, he supposed he ought to answer the man's question. Which of course meant that he was going to ask another one. "There are....we---gytrash, professor," he said in a stage whisper, changing his mind mid-thought because, well, HE did not personally like thinking about werewolves as beast and creatures. They were people first and foremost. That...and the professor had already told them not to mention them. Just a little slip of the tongue by the Hufflepuff. No big deal. "Will Professor Marchand be joining us? The original Professor Marchand?"
There were too many professors at this school with the same name now. It was confusing.

Ahhh so thats why they're out here at this time. Tenacius' blue-green eyes drifts across the cold stillness of the grounds then up at the sky, the moon full and bright. Of course the first thing on a Wizard's mind on a night like this are werewolves, but as he is in agreement with the Professor, they are still people, no matter how far gone they are.
So what's the next thing that pops in his head that he knows ONLY comes out at night? Up goes the hand "Cockroaches Professor! They also have this bad habit of flying around just when you're about to have your dinner or about to go to bed with your hot cocoa." Speaking from experience apparently.
