Default Professor Tristan Wayland's Hut

Not too far from the barn, a uniquely shaped hut is just at the edge of the Forbidden Forrest. This is not only Professor Wayland's living quarters, but it is also his office. Outside you will notice tons of wood logs and a fire pit. On the porch there are two lawn chairs. After you knock on the door you may sit and wait there until the professor is ready to see you.

When you enter the hut, you will immediately notice that the downstairs area is the Professor's office. On the walls there are many pictures of Professor Wayland with interesting creatures and different people, including his family members, friends, and mentors from school and previous occupations. There are also diagrams depicting different creatures, pointing out body parts and what they do, as well as information about what they may eat.

There isn't really room for a huge desk, but there is a roll top desk in the back right corner of the room and two comfortable chairs sit next to it. On the left side of the room is a cozy fireplace with a small black leather couch. There is also a 4 foot perch for Professor Wayland's Phoenix, Ash, to sit on; though, sometimes you might find the beautiful bird flying around outside of the Hut or perched on the roof. There are many shelves of different books. Most of the books are about creatures. The rest are a mixture of fiction, Sci-fi, graphic novels, and there might be a romance novel...or two.

Please, knock on the door first! Professor Wayland will be with you as soon as possible!

OOC: There is no waiting area thread, so please just RP your character knocking on the door and wait for Professor Wayland to answer. Also, please don't RP for Ash. You may RP that you SEE him flying around or on the roof, etc., but Ash is a Phoenix and only comes to his master unless, someone shows great loyalty to Professor Wayland.

Right. The other professor Oliver had some questions for. He knew it was early to be thinking about these things but he was never one to have idle hands. The fifth year knocked on the door and sat on one of the seats provided.

He'd look at the sky while waiting.. Clouds could make the most interesting shapes sometimes.

Tristan had just stepped out of the bathroom when he heard a knock at the door. It must have been a student because he wasn't expecting any of the other Professors to drop by. He quickly ran down the short stair case that led from his bedroom to the office area. It wasn't a huge place, but he liked it.

Tristan headed to the door, noticing a young man sitting in one of the lawn chairs on the little porch. He pushed the door open and stepped outside, "Hello, there. How can I help you?" He gave the young man a smile encouraging smile, rubbing his hands together nervously, hoping he could help in anyway.

Oliver put on a friendly smile for Professor Wayland and stood. "Hello, i actually had some questions about Bowtruckles." Because he hadn't learned much about them at all.. Other than the fact that they normally lived in trees that are perfect for wandmaking and that they didn't like people touching their trees..

"You see i'm getting into Wandmaking and i know they're a creature that one needs to learn to deal with.. Among others for the harvesting of cores." After all his research into the White River Monster he knew there would be more creatures he'd have to study after leaving Hogwarts but the Bowtruckle wasn't one of them.

Tristan listen to the young man. Bowtruckles were really fun creatures and had unique personalities. Seeing the young man stand, he gestured for him to have a seat again. It was too nice of a day to sit inside, which was the main reason he had chairs on the porch. He moved to sit in the other chair, angling it to get a better look at the young man. "Alright, what exactly would you like to know?"

He listened as the boy explained his career path. Though, he didn't like the phrase DEAL WITH, but he understood what the young man was getting at. Gently he said, "Firstly, we don't deal with animals, we work with them. To deal with has a negative connotation, and as a Magizoologist and an activist for the proper treatment of animals, that phrase doesn't rest well with me." He gave the boy a small wink and smile. He didn't want him to think he was in trouble, he just wanted him to understand that animal life was just as important as human life. "Secondly, if you come across a Bowtruckle in the wild whilst trying to get wood for wands...it will be a tedious task indeed. Mostly because they are so hard to see." Just as he was about to continue with more information, Dahlia one of the school Bowtruckles swooped down from a tree and onto Tristan's shoulder.

He had been keeping the sweet girl at his hut because she had hurt one of her little legs and couldn't get around very well at the moment. Grinning at the little one, he picked her up from his shoulder. "This is Dahlia. She has a bum leg at the moment which is why she is here instead of in the barn. Anyway! So I take it your question would be how to get wood from a tree with a Bowtruckle guarding it?" As he said this Dahlia nuzzled up to Tristan's cheek and winked at him. He grinned and awaited the young man's answer, hoping he hadn't divulged too much information...it happened sometimes.

Right... Oliver wasn't big on creatures.. He knew things about some but he had no idea the correct wording to use. "Right i meant no offense." He sat back down and listened. "I guess i'm curious what the best way to work with one is. I know they're territorial of their trees and I wouldn't want to disrespect them or their homes."

Just then there was a Bowtruckle. It was like she knew she was what they were talking about. "She's lovely.. What happened to her leg?" Because Oliver was nothing if not curious."Yes, i've read Bowtruckles trees are usually he best for Wandmaking.. But i would want the safety of a creature to be paramount." He'd never been the type to want to harm anything or anyone without reason.

"Also i was wondering if you had any tips or suggestions with OWLs coming up this term for doing well in your class?"

Tristan smiled and nodded, "Not to worry, I didn't take as an offense. It is always good to learn correct wording." He said with a wink. They would definitely learn how to do that with him. "Well, Bowtruckles are territorial when they have a tree of their own, but for the most part they are very gentle creatures, and can easily become loyal to anyone that feeds it." He said with a grin.

Tristan put little Dahlia on his knee so Oliver could get a good look at her. She had taken quiet a liking to him ever since he found her hurt in the barn. "Well, this little one, which...she is the smallest of the bunch...decided she was going to fight her big brother over the last fairy egg...and well, she didn't win." He frowned at her, and she sighed exasperatedly, folding her twiggy arms across her chest and rolling her beady black eyes. Tristan snorted at her expression. "Her brother basically booted her out of their makeshift tree in the barn and she landed oddly and hurt her leg. She is not happy about losing as you can see." He chuckled. Right back to the subject at hand. "Anyway, the best way to lure a Bowtruckle from their tree is to feed it with wood lice or fairy eggs. That is what their diet consists of. So, you should always, always, have those two things on you if you are hunting for wand wood. Bowtruckles may be small, but those fingers can gouge out your eye very easily." He said with a grim expression. He had been poked too many times.

Ah, yes that. "Well, other than study as much as possible, you could come and actually work with the animals in the barn every once in a while. Gaining experience with animals always helps, that way when you do your practical you know what you are doing because you have already done it." He said with a wink and a smile.

Oliver was happy he didn't offend Professor Wayland. Working with creatures would be new to him really. "Thank you, Professor." Most the pets they had at home weren't magical creatures. "So food is the way to their hearts." Not much different than some people, really.

The Slytherin studied Dahlia as she was moved and watched her as her story was told. "But she's a brave one." He smiled and thought of his sister, Alice. Spirited as this Bowtruckle seemed to be. "Wood Lice and Fairy Eggs.." He pulled out a small black notebook and wrote that down. "Fascinating." A smile offered in the direction of the Creatures Professor and his Bowtruckle.

"Briliant.. I'll be sure to devote some of my free time in the barn then." Because he intended on doing brilliantly on his OWLs. "I'd like to learn to work well with creatures. You see i'd like to make unique and amazing wands one day and i think that requires a clear understanding of all the aspects of wandmaking."

"You're welcome." Tristan said with a smile and a nod. He always enjoyed helping people learn new things, even if it was how to phrase things. With a chuckle he replied, "Exactly. Bowtruckles, and most animals, if you know what they like, respond well to food." He smiled, he knew it was true for himself as well. He loved to try new and different foods.

Tristan smiled down at the little creature, "All Bowtruckles are pretty brave, but she is exceptionally so. You should see how big her brother is." He raised his eyebrows in a surprised expression, and then relaxed into a grin as Dahlia climbed up him to his shoulder and nuzzled his cheek again. It was always fun to have a Bowtruckle have a crush on you. "They especially like fairy eggs I have noticed, because they are a bit harder to get than wood lice." He put his hand out and Dahlia stepped on it. He put her in front of his face and winked at her, and she swooned, laying down in his hand. He gave a good chuckle and put her back on his shoulder.

Tristan nodded listening to Oliver. He gave a smile and was glad to see a young man so driven. "I don't doubt you will do brilliantly on your OWLs. With the drive you have, I think you will do great things, Oliver." This young man reminded him of himself at that age. He had such a drive and passion for creatures, it became his life; which proved to be a negative for his love life, but the right person would understand.

Well that made things considerably easier. He assumed getting your eyes plucked out to be the biggest danger in Wandmaking and if it could be solved with a little food then maybe it wasn't a big deal at all. Not that the idea of danger would make him change his mind about wandmaking. "She seems like a fiery one for sure." Not that he knew a ton of Bowtruckles.

"How difficult are Fairy eggs to acquire?" Were they expensive or just hard to find? He couldn't imagine so.. He knew the Fair was maybe a 2-X creature. It had been something people had been saying about him lately.. that he was driven. Honestly Oliver had never thought about it, he had always just gone after whatever he wanted in life. Did others not do the same? "Thank you, Professor. I want to work smart and not hard." There was nothing wrong with hard work, but with no goal or no direction what was the point of working so hard for something? Working smart was the better way. Do what you can do get what you want.

Tristan smiled. Dahlia was fiery indeed, but for the most part, she was very sweet and loyal. "That she is, that she is. But she has a heart of gold and is very kind to everyone she meets." Though, cross her and she would poke you pretty hard. "Would you like to hold her?" He asked before actually pulling her off his shoulder, because he didn't want to remove her if Oliver didn't want to hold her. The less Dahlia moved the better; her little leg needed to heal.

That was a very good question. "Well, the problem with Fairy eggs is that they hatch into larvae very quickly and between 6 and 10 days after hatching, they spin themselves into a cocoon and after about a month like that, they hatch as full sized fairies. So if you are going to go hunting wood...," he paused to think, rubbing his chin with his rough, callused fingers, "...you would definitely need to get them the day they are laid. Fairies lay about fifty eggs at a time on the underside of leaves. They are very small. So, just for time sake, it would be easier to have wood lice. Fairy eggs are difficult to find, especially on the day they are laid." If he was a wandmaker he would definitely go the easiest route. The only reason the Bowtruckles got Fairy eggs here was because they had Fairies near by that had just laid eggs. Tristan smiled and nodded, "You are very welcome. Though, to work smart is to work hard." He gave the boy a wink and a grin.

"That's usually how the fiery ones are." He grinned to himself because once again the Bowtruckle sounded like his sister, Alice. He hadn't really noticed how nice it was to have a sibling there until she wasn't at Hogwarts anymore. He sat forward a little bit. "I'd love to." The boy extended his hand, wanting to be extra careful of Dahlia's leg.

So fairy eggs were something more to be found and less to just have.. Not really something to be bought as they hatch really fast. "So What about wood lice? Are they more commonly found?" He had a lot of questions and he hoped his string of questions wasn't annoying or something that the Professor intended to go over in a future class. if so Oliver would be content to wait until then.

Tristan smiled and nodded, "That they are." He knew many fiery creatures, but fiery people were harder to come by. When Oliver said he would like to hold her, Tristan put his hand up to Dahlia and she walked her little limpy walk onto his hand. He then rest his hand next to Oliver's, allowing Dahlia to step over to the boy's hand. "There you are. Bowtruckles are very intelligent creatures..if you talk to her she will understand you." He said with a smile.

"Oh, yes. You can go to any tree and find Wood Lice all in them. They are those tiny little brown critters that are no bigger than a grain of rice. They are very easily found, and you can freeze them and save them for a long time. Bowtruckles will eat them anyway you have them, though they do prefer fresh." Which was obvious, but you know...the more you know. Tristan enjoyed having educational talks with his students. It was refreshing to share his knowledge of all things creatures. Some people thought he was strange for liking animals so much, but he didn't care. Sometimes he preferred creatures to humans, but most of the time he enjoyed interacting with people, especially in moments like these.

She'd waited a few hours after the lesson before coming to the Hut, both because she'd had other classes and because she wanted to give the Professor some time to unwind after his lesson. It hadn't been one of the more hectic lessons, thankfully, which meant he wouldn't need TOO MUCH unwinding.

Feeling in a better head space now than she had been on the way to History of Magic, Jessa found herself relaxing just a bit as she made her way over.

There on the roof was Ash, the bird of several temptations. The young girl averted her gaze, choosing instead to focus on the wooden frame of the door as she gave it a few knocks. Even as she made her presence known, the girl half wondered if coming here would make a difference.

Tristan had not been back at his hut long, when he heard a knock at the door. He had just finished starting a fire in the fire place.
Though the days weather was beautiful, at night it did get a bit on the chilly side.

He quickly put the poker in it's stand next to the fire place, and headed for the door. Soon he saw the wonderfully curious Jessa Cambridge. He smiled, and pushed the door open and walked outside.

"Good afternoon, Jessa! It's good to see you so soon after our lesson. I think you told me you would be coming by." He couldn't quiet remember but he was pretty sure she told him she would be. "What can I help you with?" He asked, gesturing to the lawn chairs on his little porch. It wasn't dark yet, so he didn't need to turn on the outside lights. He quickly took the opposite seat and turned it so he could look at her, waiting for her response.

See, this was exactly why she had opted to write down everything she would need to discuss with him when she got here. On an average day, the girl's mind went at something over a million miles an hour. Always working out one thing or another, always deconstructing when she could or pulling things from memory for whatever reason.

As it happened, the moment the Professor asked what he could help with, those very things simply floated out of her mind and up into the clouds.

Funny how that worked. Inconvenient really as it left the girl staring blankly at him for a moment before recounting her memo card and fishing it from her pocket. Right. Ahem. Here it was. "I did say that, yes." Eyes going over the card as she took the seat opposite his. So nice he'd remembered. Merlin knew he could have been on the other side of the grounds by now if he didn't remember he'd be having a visitor then she'd have to revisit this another day.

"Right...there's three things actually and I've colour coordinated them based on level of...um..." How did she explain it...? It all made sense in her head but sometimes words were hard. "Basically there's green, yellow and red, indicating the level of...of..." What was the term...? He saw where she was going with this, right? Like red would obviously be the most...uh...Circe what WAS IT??? "Like muggle traffic signs!" She tried again, but not for her own life could she get it so it might have been best to simply move on. "Would you like the red, the yellow or the green point first?"

Did this kid have her questions..........color coded?

O_________________________o

Well, this was going to be interesting that was for sure! "So red would be the hardest, yellow medium and green easy?" Is that what she was getting at? He did like a challenge...so, "Let's go with red first." He liked going from hardest task to easiest, though most, (he assumed), tended to go the opposite way because that seemed more logical. Getting the quick and easy done first. But he liked to do the hardest task first that way it was done and over with.

Did that make sense? Well...it made sense to him at least.

In truth, she was hoping he'd have picked the green one first. It was so easy to start with and to be completely honest.............the red one might negatively affect the green and the yellow. Maybe...maybe she shouldn't have given him the option to choose because now she was sincerely regretting it.

Jessa bit her lower lip, wondering if it was too late to take this option back and start with the EASIEST thing on the agenda.

....Her talk with Hirsch hadn't prepared her to bring up the red one first, what honestly had she been thinking??

"Uh..........................actually......" She eventually said. "If we go with the red......can it ......not affect the green and the yellow......?" Had to be sure, otherwise they were cutting the red completely. It was a long year full of other experiments. She could afford to keep the red question off for now.

The look on the young girls face quickly told him he should have gone the opposite way. It made him chuckle a little.

He didn't mind if they started with the easiest and worked their way to the hardest, especially if that made her more comfortable. "Start with green and work your way up." He said with a wink and a smile.

She obviously had come here very prepared with how she wanted to talk to him about things and he didn't want to mess that up for her. Though it did make him wonder if the red one had something to do with the incident in the boys bathroom. But he would only talk about it if she brought it up. He kinda felt bad about the whole thing...

Oh thank MERLIN!

Jessa gave a deep sigh of relief, allowing her posture to relax a little more into her seat at his counter offer of allowing her to start with the green. Good. Good good. So it wasn't as terrifying and she could slowly work her way up. This was more along the lines of what she had been prepared for and what she'd practiced several times in the mirror when she'd written these down.

The Ravenclaw took a moment to settle herself, glancing down at her card to ensure she phrased it right.

Green. That would be...."I'd like an opportunity to earn the points I lost back."

Of course she would elaborate, 'cause see she'd practiced THAT BIT too. In the then quiet dormitory, Jessa had gone through all the possible responses and came up with responses for those too.

"I'm not asking for the ones you took for being in the boy's bathroom. I shouldn't have been there even if Einstein was on the loose and there was probably a better way of handling it." Maybe ask some older boys to catch him for her. If only she'd seen some that day, this could have gone differently. "I'm not saying you should just give 'em back. Professor Hirsch said you really care about the creatures and probably got super worried when you saw Einstein like that--and that you did what you thought was best. I'm asking to be able to earn them back." Because she wasn't an animal torturer and didn't wanna be thought of as one and it .....was upsetting to know it was the source of her point loss.

"I'm willing to help with the barn cleaning or anything else you might have in mind."

Tristan listened to her intently. Hirsch was a good man and a great head of house. It was good to know that the other Professor knew him so well already. He definitely could have handled that situation better, and Professor Hirsch was able to explain Tristan's reasoning better than he was.

He listened to her request and thought it was a great idea. "Professor Hirsch was right. I am a very avid animal rights activist, and seeing things as I saw them that day really upset me," he paused for a moment, sighing, "But I did let my anger get the best of me that day, and I do apologize for that. I do appreciate you wanting to earn the points back. I accept your offer." He rubbed his chin for a moment, "I can always use help with the horse stalls. All you would have to do is make sure their hay is clean and see if they need more. If it isn't clean a quick scorgify will do. I don't expect you to scoop poop. You can always give them carrots and apples and a good rub if you want as well. The love attention." He said with a grin and a wink. "If you do that for...five days I will give you ten points, two points per day. Is that a deal?" He asked putting his hand out for her to shake.

A thought occurred to him, "What exactly where you doing with that lizard? And...what is your yellow question?" He said with a grin.

A thought occurred to him, "What exactly where you doing with that lizard? And...what is your yellow question?" He said with a grin.
Her heart had been absolutely pounding in her chest while she waited. Despite her best arguments, there was still a chance he'd say no--and she'd have to accept it and move on to another of her three point question--but it would be disappointing all the same. Just the idea of the no and the lecture that might have come after were enough to send her into a mini panic attack.

Wait what?? It was a deal?? For real???

Hardly able to believe her ears, Jessa reached forward giving a firm shake of the Professor's hand. There was something of a grin there too, one that spoke to her obvious disbelief. "Yes! Definitely! I can do that." This...was starting out far better than she'd imagined. "I'll be there after lunch tomorrow!"

His question took her off guard but she quickly recovered. "Oh. That. Well you know how reptiles have the ability to keep growing until they die? Specifically snakes and some species of lizards? Well garden lizards are predisposed to smaller sizes and relatively smaller growth. I wanted to see the potential for growth otherwise, to see if it'd stick there--kinda like those people who put charms on certain magical creatures to keep them from growing too big and exposing the wizarding world--which I also wanna know about."

Which brought her to the yellow card. "Professor Hirsch brought up a point I liked. See....I don't learn much through questions and books on their own." Kinesthetic learner and all. "And he suggested I ask if you'd allow me to continue some of my experiments under your supervision, in a controlled environment."

Tristan was happy to take the firm handshake. Everyone deserved second chances, especially when the person that was upset...probably took it a little to hard. "Sounds perfect. There will be a sheet for you to sign in and out on in the stables. Just write your name down and the time you get there and the time you leave." He grinned at how excited she was. He must have really gave her the wrong impression about him, which made him slightly more upset with himself.

He listened intently...but was still kind of confused about it. "So you engorged it to see if it would grow or stay at that size?" This was very compelling to say the least, but he was still a little leery of her doing this to an animal without supervision. "Yes, that is very interesting because you often have to re-do the spell to make sure they don't grow or the magic wears out. Kind of like with Fwoopers and how you have to re-do their silencing charm once a month." He really enjoyed seeing her curiosity on these subjects, despite her doing them without an adult present.

Tristan had to think long and hard about this. He would much rather have her doing the experiments with an adult present than for her to do them and, Merlin forbid, something went wrong. "I am a hands on leaner as well, so I understand how that is." He paused for a moment, rubbing his chin, and with a serious face gave her his proposition, "I will agree to this under one condition," he paused, "I want to see all of the experiments you have been working on and I decide which ones you can continue with and which ones I think may be to dangerous for the creatures until you have...a bit more experience." Yes, she was very talented and intelligent for a third year, but she was still a third year and there were somethings that could really go wrong if she was even the slightest bit off. "Do we have a deal? I get to chose and supervise your experiments?" He put his hand out for her to shake.

That sounded simple enough. Jessa nodded at his words. Sign in and out when she went to the stables. It made sense. How else would he know she had been there to visit? It wasn't asking for much and the young girl was honestly happier to have come to an agreement...though she couldn't have been too relieved. It was the green question, the easiest she'd come here to discuss. Only time would tell about the others.

"Right! Yes! To see if the larger size and the increased feedings would spur it's body into naturally continuing the pattern. Kinda like.....jump starting it and seeing if it'll keep at it." But the results were inconclusive. She hadn't had nearly enough time with Einstein before he was released back into the Greenhouse. She wondered how the little guy was doing now. She'd have to try finding him again to say hello. There was no mistaking the way her face lit up at the mention of fwoopers. Ever since she'd first seen one that day in Diagon Alley three years ago, they had become one of the girl's ultimate fascinations. "I'd like to have one of those one day." How amazing would...that...be....

er......

.....Creature loving Professor say what now?

Jessa blinked a few times, trying to process what the Professor's proposition was really saying. He'd like to know all her experiments? He wanted to choose which she continued? Huh. For several reasons the girl could only stare at the outstretched hand, not offering her own as she'd just done on the matter of points. The hesitation was almost palpable as Jessa tried to find the right words. "I'm not entirely sure that's a good idea Professor." She finally admitted. "I don't think I mind you supervising the creature related experiments but I don't suspect you'd be keen on most of the others. They span a wide variety of aspects of life." So no, she couldn't agree to him seeing and supervising them all. He would thank her if he understood.

Her familiar wasn't able to come to Hogwarts unless THIS GUY was deemed trustworthy. By her. And truth be told, Dora certainly hoped that the man won her trust because she really missed Cherry something awful. It was the worst feeling in the world to have to leave her tarantula every time she came back to school. She figured if ANYONE would understand it would be Professor McHotty.

And well... like she had already thought about this matter... if she deemed him trustworthy she would ask permission to house her baby in the barn at school. Only if she could provide all of the things she needed from home. Mhm.

Pulling her scarf a bit tighter around her neck and squinting up at the roof she paused to admire the Professor's bird. Such a beautiful and majestic thing it was. Ugh. She wished to one day gain the trust and respect of such an amazing creature. But for now... she had some work to do.

Stepping up to the door the Gryffindor knocked a few times and then stood back, smiling up. Maybe she would get lucky and he would sing for her!
