Default Patio Hangout

Though no longer outside, the outdoors have been brought inside thanks to a number of charms and enchantments. After stepping into the trunk of the Beetle, one will find themselves walking on a stretch of green lawn with various trees and hedges scattered about. The lawn is perfect for various activities, anything from morning yoga to an afternoon game of Quodpot or just casually laying about to work on your tan. While it may be raining or snowing on the grounds of Hogwarts, in here the weather is always pleasant: sunny and warm by day, starry and cool by night.

Beyond the lawn sits a patio at the entrance of a sleek white building. Here a number of wicker sofas and chairs have been placed with accompanying side-tables. All of the sofas and chairs face the fire pit that is stationed in the centre of the patio. It is not uncommon to find others sitting here, either with a book in their hands, socializing with friends, or watching a boy or girl (a crush of theirs, most likely) doing their own thing out on the lawn.

The back of the patio is connected to a white wall containing a set of double glass doors that will take you into a maze of hallways.

Default Anyone, yes?

A book accompanied Melanie on her journey into the faux outdoors. It was much needed relaxation time after touring the castle earlier; the school was enormous, and the draft was ridiculous. She was glad the beetle was insulated; the winter would be so harsh to her. At least Ilvermorny was located somewhere with snow. Otherwise, she would have been doubly shocked once the winter months smacked them in the face with their blistery winds and bitter coldness. Like my heart, she thought playfully. It made her chuckle.

But then she opened her book and began to read. If a student disturbed her, she was peaceful enough to not snap at them. So be it. It reminded her of being home over summertime, of sitting out on her front porch of her mama's house when she was younger. Always reading, always thirsting for more. She was missing Duncan's whistling. Where was he, anyway? Annoying some female or another?

Speaking of annoying some female...Melanie needed to have a talk with one certain Kaysha Stewart. The time would come. Perhaps Duncan would be better for it, but it was so hard for Melanie to put control of a situation so serious with her brother. Things to think about, things to think about.

For now, peace.

Hogwarts was absolutely, positively unimpressive, but Jesús was strangely drawn to it. He still thought it was ridiculous that not only did they have to arrive in the most dramatic, embarrassing form of transportation, they also had to live in it for the duration of their stay there. Not that he was complaining too much (this was far, far, far more lavish than what he was used to,) but still, it was the principle of the matter!

He'd declined any and all invitations to "socialize" because had work to do. The patio seemed the least inhabited (a surprise, as he fully expected to see it full of the loudmouths of Ilvermorny,) so he headed there, with his bag. In it he had a journal (full of notes, plans, potential speeches, newspaper clippings, and the like,) some pens (because using quills just felt incredibly inauthentic and he refused to conform to the magical practices of the authoritative wizarding world,) a bottle of water, and some other things to keep him preoccupied for the day.

As he walked, he read from a paperback book (on historical protests and activism around the world,) and only looked up once he'd reached his destination. "Oh." His tone was less than polite, so he decided to fix it. "Professor Williams," he said, a smile forming on his lips, "didn't think you'd be out here." Better. See? Polite. He took a seat on one of the chairs, was mildly impressed by how comfortable it was, also thought about how he could possibly pilfer a few of these chairs to bring home, and glanced over at one of his major adversaries in school. "I trust you'll keep up your end of our truce?"

The 'oh' was what impeded on her peaceful reading. A disgusted sounding 'oh,' too. Melanie looked up from her book to find exactly who she thought had said the 'oh.' Jesús had sought some quiet time as well, then, and Melanie thought it quite foolish of him to think he'd be alone in the only quiet spot for the Americans to relax in.

"Don't sound so disappointed, Jesús, I won't be bothering you. I can assure you of that," she quirked an eyebrow at him before licking her thumb and using it to the turn the page in her fascinating book. He was speaking like such an adult that it made her smirk. "If you keep it, I'll keep it," she replied. "Relax. I'm reading my book. And you'd have to be pretty creative to ruin my mood currently." And no, Jesús, that was not an invitation, though Melanie was almost positive he would take it as such. Probably shouldn't have said that final tidbit aloud.

Also, she added, "Congratulations on being chosen as champion. You will do well, I'm sure." There was no doubt in her mind. "That being said, anything you need in order to better prepare for Challenge One that is legal and allowed, let me know." That went for any of her champions. She should probably relay that to them all. "What are you reading on this dreary English day?"

Another lick of her thumb, another turn of the page. Melanie Williams was brilliant at multitasking.

Almost like divine intervention, the shrill, nagging voice of his delicate and sweet abuela hung around the back of his head, prodding him to act right. If she were there with him, she would've flashed Professor Williams a toothy grin, apologized in English as best as she could, and then would've fixed Jesús with a steely stare. In order to rectify this (because he was fairly certain his abuela probably had a dream about him misbehaving and would most likely send a letter soon,) Jesús cleared his throat gently and adopted a friendly sort of demeanor.

"I wasn't trying to suggest you would," he said, building up his politician's apology, "I was just mildly surprised to see you. Here." He hoped that it came across as pleasant and unassuming. He refused to lose face so easily, especially not to her. Very carefully, Jesús eyed her book, and in order to keep up the guise of a sociable, easy-going student, he decided to partake in casual conversation. Piece of cake. "I really don't want to get on your bad side," especially because they'd only just arrived at Hogwarts, "and between you and the other Professor Williams, I have a feeling you two will be..." Tyrannical? Dastardly? Malicious in their punishments? "A force to reckon with. And I don't want to serve any kind of detention here." The shame would never leave him.

His face relaxed even more, and he rubbed the back of his neck, trying not to look so smug about being chosen. "I'll do more than that." He would definitely win. Already he'd considered what sort of alternative outcome that would satisfy him should he actually not come out as the winner; he supposed Valerie winning would give him satisfaction. Briefly, he wondered exactly why that was, but decided against poking around and dissecting it. There was no need, none whatsoever. "Good to know you're still looking out for the people," he said sharply, then, fixed his tone, "I mean to say that I'll be happy for any help you provide." He paused, wondering if he should actually tell her and what would happen as a result of that, and then proceeded to tell her anyway. "Oh, nothing too serious, some light reading on historical protests and the activism that accompanied them."

Jesús wasn’t good at being friendly. Melanie was amused at how awful he was at it, actually. She had taught Jesús since he was a first year. All of the current students she had taught since first years; she’d been there eight years now. “Jesús,” she began, almost the minute he’d started talking. ”You are not on my bad side. Not yet. Calm down,” she said the words in a smooth, even tone. “I have no desire to give you detention today, or ever, but sometimes it’s necessary.” But to her, this seemed extremely paranoid. Had he already done some rule-breaking? Or was he just covering his bases, so to speak? This whole discussion was doing nothing to lessen yourself as someone to watch in her eye, Rodriguez.

She was officially not multitasking. Not paying attention to her book. Distracted. Jesús was an enigma. He had potential, to her, at least, and she would need to speak to Duncan about Jesús. Eventually, he might be useful to them. For now, though, he was her student, and she did care for her students. Even Kathleen Yang, who was appalling 95% of the time. All of her time and energy was wasted on useless crud. Wasted.

“Enticing,” she said in response to his reading. “Something I would have read at your age,” she commented casually. Her brain was whirling, and suddenly, she found herself snapping her book shut in one hand while also standing to stride past where he was sitting. She tucked the book under her arm and pointed her wand at a plant, watering it. Just a gentle stream. Plants were not big Melanie Williams fans; they all died on her at some point. “Jesús...what do you want to do after you graduate?”

Jesús did not believe Williams one bit. He'd tried, several times in the past, but always came to the same conclusion: she was not to be trusted. Like most of the staff, her untrustworthiness was only amplified by the frequency in detentions that they handed out to the sixth year. While some (most of them) of the punishment was merited, the other detentions were not. Still, he relaxed his face, and eased back into the chair. See? Friendly. "That doesn't make sense. At all." How could she not want to give him detention but felt that it was necessary sometimes? "Don't give me detention at all, if you truly feel that way."

If she wanted to believe they shared common interests, then Jesús would let her. Who was he to stop someone (however deluded) from their daydreams and wishes? "Surprising," he said quickly, "but also very expected. You do teach History of Magic, so I'm not surprised you would delve into activism as well." Not that he believed her. As nice as she looked Jesús knew the truth (or, he would come to know it, anyway, once he gathered more information.) He watched, with mild interest, as she walked over and watered a plant. So normal, so kind, so incredibly fake. He would steel himself against her kindness (she was good, very, very good,) and would remember that in the end he could only really trust himself. And Valerie.

"Impact the world and shatter its foundations."

Melanie didn’t answer right away. She finished watering the plant, dusting her fingers over the edge of some of the leaves. “Perhaps I’ll stop,” her voice drawled, particularly on the second syllable of ‘perhaps.’ Her light twang was all that revealed her roots. Years of university and living in the Boston area could do wonders to one’s dialect. “You’re proven interesting to me, Jesus.” She could go on, but decided to leave it at that.

“Did you know I worked for an organization...a no-maj run non profit. Once we get back to America, I recommend you look it up. I’ll give you the name. You’ll see what I’m all about.” Again, Melanie was stingy on the details. “Our no-maj counterparts are ahead of the times in some ways. In others, not so much.” Testing the waters with Jesus. Testing the waters. “What do you do over your summers?” she asked curiously.

Impact the world. Shatter the foundations.

It brought a smile to her face. “I think you’ll very much succeed. I have no doubts about that.”

Jesus was perfect.

Default For Ern/Silly Willy!

Sean made himself at home in a wicker chair on the patio.
He had the rare talent of almost never feeling out of place or uncomfortable so he usually found himself at home wherever he was. The letter in his hands was from his mother, though his father's name was written on the bottom he knew the old man's signature wasn't nearly this neat. He'd seen his father sign a million things:Birthday cards, Christmas presents, Receipts, Checks, orders for the pub his family owned and it had never looked this neat.

It was a letter for he and his siblings so he'd pass it along to Will and let him do the rest of the legwork. Where was silly Willy anyway?

Will had his broom in one hand and self-refilling water bottle in the other, and he was in a hurry. To be fair, he was almost always in a hurry, careening around corners and bumping his elbow into people's faces. It was one of his charms.

He stopped at the sight of his brother lounging on the patio, and then Will was trying to fit himself and his broom into the chair with Sean. "Hey, bro. Hey. Share the chair, bro. Why aren't you willing to share? I'm your flesh and blood."

Where was Silly Willy off to anyway? Flying? Was he learning quidditch or something. "Hey who was that chick you were with at the challenge?"

He hated being called Willy, and Sean knew it. Will growled at his brother and bumped him in the head with his broom again. Deserved it. Idiot. "Owl! Did mom send cookies?" Because Sean would hog them unless pressed. There was no cooking in the world better than their mother's.

Will snatched the letter and scanned it quickly, then started over to read it more slowly. "Dad sends his love. Sure." He shoved the letter in his pocket to hand off to Maisie later. "Aslan. She's... I have no idea. The most confusing girl in the world."

Sean grinned at irritating his brother if it was an olympic sport he'd have won the gold for years. But then he was bumped in the head by that stupid broom. "Merlin, watch that thing..and no, no cookies." He rubbed the spot on his head where it hit, hoping there wasn't some sort of lump.. There were cookies but Sean are most of them. Maisie would get one.

Testy as always, Willy. "Snatching is rude." He did his best impersonation of their mother who said this very very often. "He always does, doesn't he?" He added sarcastically, their father wasn't one for letters. Or Owls.. That last bit made Sean laugh. "All girls are confusing, Little brother. What's so confusing about her?" It seemed Hogwarts girls were very interesting.

"No... no, cookies?" That hit Will right in the heart. And in the stomach. He barely held it together between letters from home, and this time... no cookies. Will gave his brother a doubtful look and shook the letter again just in case something fell out. Nothing. "I'm going to ask her. You better not be hoarding them for yourself. There's four of us got to share those packages."

And it was stupid unfair that his mother sent anything to Sean in the first place.

He pocketed the letter to take to Maisie. "This one is extra confusing. Like she holds it against you that you don't understand her but then doesn't really want to be understood. She's a mystery but resents it being pointed out. I think maybe she just doesn't trust anyone. I'll just find someone a little simpler to understand."

"No cookies." Cause once the lie started he had to stick with it. Momma didn't raise a quitter. "Go ahead and ask her, If she sent cookies i didn't get them.. Maybe dad ate them." Because that made sense... Not. But whatever. "Besides it's not my fault things come to me first."

What a weird sounding girl? "So what does she want you to do then? Be confused but not act confused? That's stupid.. I mean.. how can you even understand her? You just met her!" He put Aslan down as a girl he didn't need to get to know. Who needed life to be more complicated? He was already living out of a red VW Beetle.

Jesus was perfect.
Williams was being her weird, shifty self as usual, but it seemed like there was something else there. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, though. Jesús perked up when she mentioned that he was interesting, even though her tone indicated that he should be anything but excited about that. "Interesting? Does this mean I get exempt from all exams this term?" Which, and he would continue to argue this, as an Ilvermorny competitor he shouldn't even have to do school work. He doubted Williams would even go for that, but it never hurt to try.

The sixth year found himself perking up again at her words (he really needed to stop that, she might think he was eager to be in her presence, or something.) It was her tone, though, that forced him to reevaluate his excitement. Dark brows sloping downward, Jesús leaned back into the chair, reviewing what Williams had just said. "I shouldn't be surprised, you do seem like the type." It was neither a compliment nor an insult; Jesús was simply stating a fact. "What's the organization called? What do they do?" A no-maj nonprofit seemed harmless enough. Was he simply fishing for reasons to not trust her? His eyes drifted over to her once more and he got the answer he wanted.

She was suspicious, alright. Very, very suspicious.

"I usually work and then volunteer in my free time," he replied, picking up his book and thumbing through the pages. "Outside of that, I'm either reading and learning something new, or casually taking part in local rallies and protests. Typical teenage stuff." Jesús shrugged languidly, dragging his eyes upward to the History of Magic professor's face. Fraternizing with the enemy was proving more difficult than he originally thought. "Thank you," he said slowly and with caution. Something about the way she said that was off-putting, to say the least, but a part of him (a childish, foolish part) wanted to believe that she'd meant it in earnest. He was extremely conflicted. "Oh," an afterthought, "I'm including the wizarding world in this too."
