When she had decided to sign up for dueling club, it had mostly been to hopefully make her papa proud. And her mama, who hadn’t been too difficult to get to send her permission slip, but Stasya had definitely not expected that the very first duel she was going to be expected to participate in would be against one of her best friends. It was only making her that much more nervous, even though she had been secretly practicing any spell she could find in her textbooks. The hard part was that she felt like she wasn’t going to be expected to just do things like make flowers appear. It was a duel, but she really didn’t want to hurt Emmeline. Combined with her excitement at first over getting to practice spells, it was making her feel really weird and confused as to what she was supposed to do.

First, though, she knew she was supposed to bow to her opponent. To Emmeline, which was just weird and she wondered if Professor Hirsch actually expected her to hurt her roommate and friend. That was just mean, but it also didn’t mean she had to. There had to be a way around it. She just had to think of it.

First off, or maybe second seeing as the bow had technically been first, she’d aimed her wand at the ground below Emmeline. “Spongify,” she cast, sending most of her focus toward making sure if she accidentally did hurt the other girl, at least if she fell she wasn’t going to do more damage. But she figured an actual spell ought to follow, which needed thought. It needed her to think about the spells she’d read about, the spells she’d practiced in her dorm and out in the barn sometimes but not anywhere near the creatures.

In the end, she’d pointed her wand sort of in Emmeline’s direction but really more to her left as she’d cast Purple Firecrackers. Nobody said she couldn’t cast sparkly spells, but she still really didn’t want to hurt her friend.

Dueling club had seemed like such an exciting prospect at first. Not that Emmeline was keen on hurting people, but she thought it was important to learn how to defend herself, which was what she'd told Nanny in her letters. Nanny had had to help convince Mum to sign the permission slip, which had finally worked. Dad, though, had written to tell her that if she didn't win, there would be no more dueling next term. Nanny had said he was just kidding in her latest owl, but Emmeline wasn't sure that was true. Still... She was supposed to duel Stasya. This was one duel that the first year did NOT want to win. Stasya was one of her very best friends, and she couldn't live with herself if she somehow hurt the other girl. Plus, she wanted Stasya to win her first duel, because Emmeline had a feeling that her roommate had been practicing super hard. Emmeline had practiced too, of course, but the one jinx she knew was NOT even an option anymore. Nope. This whole thing was horrible and confusing, because she DID want to keep dueling next term, and it wasn't fair to Stasya to totally not try at all, because what if she got hurt in her next duel then? Maybe Professor Hirsch didn't really want first years to duel, so he put friends together on purpose. It sounded like the weird kind of thing that a grown up at Hogwarts would do; they were a whole new kind of weird here.

Emmeline returned Stasya's bow, which was also SUPER WEIRD, and reluctantly aimed her wand somewhere off to Stasya's right. The Gryffindor thought that casting the cushioning charm was a great idea, and she was totally about to copy her friend when the purple firecrackers went off. She took the hit, which just felt kind of warm because they mostly missed her. Well, they didn't hurt or anything when they hit anyway.

Right, it was her turn now. Without wasting any more time, Emmeline re-aimed her wand at the floor at Stasya's feet and muttered, "Spongify!" She felt confident that that spell would work, because she'd practiced it a million times in their dorm room. So now if something bad happened by accident, Stasya wouldn't get hurt on the hard floor.

She had a plan for what spell to cast next. Emmeline wasn't sure when she'd come up with it, or how she'd decided but it was the perfect plan. Aiming her wand at Stasya's arm (the one NOT holding her wand), the first year cast: "Bulla!" She watched as bubbles shot out of her wand; even if they hit, bubbles couldn't possibly hurt! See, it was the perfect plan!

As her firecrackers had grazed Emmeline’s arm, Stasya had gotten a bit worried that she’d actually managed to hurt her friend. They might’ve been dueling, but she hadn’t actually wanted to do any damage. That was what the Spongify charm had been for. So Emmeline wouldn’t get hurt if she actually managed to do anything and she fell down. But, her roommate hadn’t fallen down or actually done anything to look like she was hurt, so the blonde had relaxed a little again. Just a little, in time to hear Emmeline cast Spongify on the ground by her, and she sent her a grin. “Thanks!,” she called out, bouncing a little just to see what the ground felt like. Actually, it was kind of fun. Like standing on a trampoline or a big cushion or something. Maybe a mat if it was really thick.

The bouncing had distracted her enough that she hadn’t realized Emmeline had sent another spell at her, and the bubbles collided with her free arm and burst apart, eliciting a giggle from her since it had felt really weird. Like a snowball fight but with bubbles instead of snowballs. It was way less cold, and she bounced back pretty easily. Kind of literally as she had still been sort of mid-bounce on the soft floor when the bubbles had hit. Either way, she was able to get her wand ready again pretty quickly.

She didn’t actually have a plan for what she wanted to cast, but a spell had come to her mind and without her really realizing it, she had cast at Emmeline again. “Tarantallegra!” Dancing wouldn’t hurt. She didn’t think it would. At least, there was still the spongify floor in play?

Emmeline grinned back at Stasya as her friend called out a thanks. The floor was way softer and she found it fairly bouncy as she sidestepped Stasya's next spell. The dancing legs jinx did not sound like fun, and she figured the floor being unstable and bouncy would actually make it worse. She was soo lucky 'cause she'd barely managed to step out of the way of Stasya's spell; her friend is super good at spells!

Now the big question was: what spell should she cast next? Emmeline racked her brains for a spell that she was good at, but would not hurt Stasya AT ALL. That was still her plan, yup. She even mentally discarded the sneezing jinx as she went through her list of spells in her head; sneezing didn't hurt, but it wasn't exactly fun either. Finally, a spell came to mind but she'd have to be super careful about how she cast it.

This jinx wasn't any worse than the purple firecrackers one, though, and that hadn't hurt at all. So hopefully this spell wouldn't hurt Stasya if it hit her, either. Emmeline took careful aim, except that she was really aiming more next to Stasya than at her. She didn't want the other Gryffindor's skin coming into contact with any sparks, after all. Emmeline muttered, "Periculum!" and a small shower of red sparks burst out of her wand tip. She kept her eyes glued to Stasya's face, hoping that none of the sparks really hit her friend and that they didn't hurt her if they did land.

In the back of her mind, Stasya really didn’t want to completely fail at this. She wasn’t entirely sure if she ought to be good at dueling because of her parents, but something told her that it would make sense. Maybe she’d ask Professor Hirsch later if Durmstrang made people good at dueling, but even if she wasn’t there, she still felt like she wanted to be good at this. She also didn’t want to hurt Emmeline, but that was just making it more interesting since she was having to think of the spells she knew that wouldn’t actually do damage. Because she’d worked on others too while she’d been studying for this, but she didn’t want to try them if she’d end up hurting her friend.

In that way, she was sort of happy that her jinx hadn’t hit, even though she also was sort of disappointed because she’d wanted to see what it looked like. She’d been afraid to actually try it before now since she hadn’t wanted to accidentally make one of her housemates dance uncontrollably without their permission. But also, the miss meant she had to do some quick thinking again. Plus, Emmeline had cast a spark spell and she’d sort of sidestepped to the left and back a little to avoid the red sparks from her friend’s wand. Actually, it had more been a side-bounce, really. The spongy floor was still awfully fun, and it helped her bounce back to be ready once she’d thought of another spell.

Another spell that really shouldn’t hurt anyone, but might pause things for a second? She didn’t want anything too difficult to retrieve. Aiming her wand sort of at her friend’s wand hand, or more accurately her wand, she did a swish and flick. “Wingardium Leviosa!

Dueling was not shaping up to be how she'd thought it would be, but that was probably only because she was dueling one of her best friends. Emmeline still felt extremely conflicted by this point, even though they'd been dueling for a while now already. She didn't really care too much if she lost this one, because that would mean that Stasya would win. At the same time, she knew that she wouldn't get any better -- and neither would Stasya, really -- if she just gave up or stopped putting any effort in. She also thought that maybe, hopefully, they were both learning something by choosing spells that wouldn't hurt the other person while still trying to find a way to win. Emmeline had practiced a few basic jinxes that she wasn't willing to use against Stasya, like the Leg Locker Curse, for example. So there was a lot more strategy involved here than throwing jinxes at her opponent and trying to win a slug fest.

The first year's gaze had been studying her friend's eyes, facial expressions, and wand hand intently -- she figured that glancing between them might give her an edge. She saw the disappointment flash across Stasya's face when she'd gotten around the Tarantellgra jinx, and chalked it up to curiosity on her friend's part. Emmeline was curious what that looked like too, and to be honest, a small part of her had briefly thought about maybe taking the hit just to see. Most of her had been a little freaked out by the idea, though; not that she thought out-of-control legs would hurt exactly, but the idea of not being able to stand while someone else -- even someone she trusted -- had a wand on her was kind of a little scary.

When Stasya started the swish-and-flick movement, Emmeline's eyes were fastened on her friend's wand arm so she was expecting the spell. She didn't have time to dodge it or deflect it (was it possible to deflect spells?), but she did recognize the wand movement right away, so she was ready. Her wand began levitating out of her hand, following the commands of Stasya's spell, but Emmeline followed it up quickly. She stretched allll the way out to her very tippy-toes, and managed to snatch her wand back out of the air before it levitated completely out of her reach. This happened in a matter of seconds in real time, probably, but to Emmeline it felt like forever. Being without a wand was worse than being on the floor, for sure. She hadn't realized how much she'd come to depend on her wand in the past few weeks at Hogwarts when she'd obviously never had one before that, but now the thought of losing it in a dueling situation was as bad as being hit with a curse in her opinion.

The first year bounced back down to her feet -- literally bounced, because of the Spongify'd floor -- so she was a little off-balance when she touched back down with her wand clenched tightly in her hand. She wasn't thinking when she cast a new spell; she would never have cast this one if she was thinking. Instead she'd been worried about losing suddenly: losing her wand, the duel, her parents' respect, when bluebell flames shot out of the end of her wand in Stasya's general direction. Emmeline couldn't remember saying the incantation, but she must have unconsciously because she certainly couldn't do nonverbal magic. Panic made her mind blank for a second before she remembered that her bluebell flames never burned. They were just warm and kind of ticklish; the bluebell flames charm was one of her best spells and she'd practiced them so often all over the place that she must have cast them on instinct. But she knew they never hurt or burned, because she'd accidentally cast them ON her hand instead of above it several times while she'd worked on the spell. So Stasya wouldn't be hurt by the flames even if she didn't manage to get out of their way.

She knew Emmeline was focused on her. Honestly, Stasya was doing the exact same thing, keeping her eyes mostly just focused on every movement her friend was making opposite her, and because of that, she thought she could tell that her friend was just as curious about the dancing jinx. Not that she thought Emmeline would cast the same thing just to see, and she was just as determined not to have it cast on her. She wasn’t that curious. Not right now, anyway. Not when she was determined to last as long as she possibly could in this duel. Not when she felt like she had to prove something, even if she also kind of wanted to prove that it was possible to duel someone without actually hurting them.

Because she knew the levitation charm wouldn’t hurt. She couldn’t levitate Emmeline with it, or at least she didn’t think she could, and she really hadn’t even meant for her friend’s wand to float quite as high as it actually had. Even if Emmeline still managed to retrieve it. She knew she would have floated it back down to her if she hadn’t. It wasn’t a fair fight if she didn’t offer the chance to retaliate.

Except…she had definitely not expected that spell in retaliation. Her grey-green eyes had widened as she saw the bluebell flames coming out of Emmeline’s wand, her surprise not really giving her the chance to dodge out of the way and therefore meaning the flames had brushed up against her shoulder and nearly caught the ends of her hair before sort of just hanging there. Not really burning her, thankfully, and she’d flicked her wand up again without really letting it bother her. She kind of couldn’t do anything about it either, not spell-related anyway and it wasn’t really hurting. Her hair was intact, as far as she could tell. Just her shoulder was kind of warm.

Instead of focusing on that, she racked her brain for another spell she could use, and finally quietly cast a sparking spell in Emmeline’s direction, or more accurate a spot just to her left. “Micans

If they thought that he was going to let either one of them get badly hurt, then they had another thing coming.

Though, it looked as though he didn't have to worry about that because the spells used were probably the least harmful spells you could use. On second thought, it was probably something he should've expected the minute he decided to pair these two up against one another. It was something that often happened between two friends who had to face each other during a duel and it amused Hirsch slightly. Even through the competitive nature of this club, they were still being nice.

It wasn't long before the spells were getting slightly more intense - fire, you know - and the time remaining for the duel was coming to a close. So, the minute the time was up, the shield went up between the two Gryffindors, making the Sparking Spell fizzle in the air and disappear. Cool? He thought so.

"Well done!" he called, emerging from his spot and making his way to the two, "That was an exceptional effort from both of you. Really. I can't be more proud." The smile on his face certainly showed it. "There can only be one winner and you, Miss Dalgaard-Volkova, have taken the lead. Congratulations! And well done on putting up a great fight, Miss Sparkes."

Stats:
Anastasiya Dalgaard-Volkova: 52.78%
Emmeline Sparkes: 49.44%
