Default IMPS Challenge #1 :: Louise Hamilton

You find yourself standing at the edge of a dark forest with nothing but your wand to aide you. Tall, gnarled trees tower overhead, bunching close together as if to block out the sky. A thick fog covers the forest in an eerie haze that adds to the sense of overwhelming dread. Those who dare venture farther will quickly notice the temperature steadily dropping and darkness increasing with each step.

What dangers lie ahead in this place? Dare you even go inside?

OOC: Post in this thread for your challenge to begin. You will have until May 31st @ 11:59 PM GMT to complete this challenge. Good luck!

Since the moment her name had been announced as a champion, Louise had been filled with mixed emotions. The idea of a full scholarship to a university of her choice was appealing, because she could finally study more in-depth on the ancient histories. And yet, the seventeen year old was completely nervous which was an understatement.

Finally standing at the edge of the dark forest, Louise drew a deep breath. She lived for adventures and opportunities; these were just among those things she loved, weren't they? Not to mention the professors wouldn't put underage witches and wizards - although she wasn't underage - at risk, would they? She was one of the oldest competitors in this challenge, which meant, if she couldn't manage to complete it successfully, how could she possibly graduate at the end of this year? And university, free ride or not, well, she might as well just forget it.

"Lumos," she whispered, to give herself some light as she began her journey. There wasn't much choice; it was either into the forest or resign and she wasn't about to quit before she even began.

follow me; everything is all right.

The light emitting from your wand falls upon the ground and bounces off the dark towering trees, creating long shadows from your surroundings. But wait... What is that? A shadow from a creature shrinking away from the light? The fog around you still lingers and prohibits you from seeing too far ahead as you make your way forward.

Suddenly, a loud, ear-deafening scream cuts through the silence. It’s one of those screams that sends shivers down your spine because you know the truth; a scream like that can only derive from a source of real terror.

Another scream is heard. Is it coming from further into the forest?

Now is the time to act!

Dare you move towards the sound?

The light emitted from her wand didn't do much in terms of making things less creepy. Louise's dark eyes followed the path ahead, except saw not much to go by. She had to resort to more than just her vision, it seemed, as she felt slight shivers down her spine. There was also movement ahead, which shrunk away from the light her wand emitted. Trudging forward, although reluctantly, because ... was that a lethifold? Dementors were one thing, but lethifolds, were deadly. Cringing as she tried to collect her thoughts, she was about to use a patronus for more protection and light when suddenly, her thoughts were interrupted.

Screams. Loud screams, that made the seventh year automatically fling her hands to cover her ears. Focus, Natalia Louise Hamilton, you can't win this championship with your hands over your ears. Happy memories, like the time she found out she was going to be a big sister. No, no. When she got her acceptance to Ilvermorny. When she heard her name selected as a champion for Thunderbird.

"Expecto Patronum!"

As had when she practiced last year, a transparent, smoke-like, bird emerged from her wand, forming the much needed barrier between herself and the screaming sounds. Enough for her to keep trudging forward into the depths of the forest. What was it she was even supposed to be looking for? Or rescuing? Louise didn't know, but all she knew was that she was not alone. There were dangerous creatures amongst her and even though she liked adventure, when it involved something that could kill her with one swoop, well, that was not an adventure.

follow me; everything is all right.

With your patronus by your side, you follow the sound of the screams getting louder. You are indeed getting closer.

As you close in on the sound, a sense of hopelessness grows within you. A confirmation perhaps that your companion will have to help you through whatever happens next.

You finally stumble upon two figures. An older woman, lying down on the ground and one cloaked, hooded figure hovering above her. The cold, the feeling of despair and the strong smell of decay washes over you, causing your patronus to weaken and falter.

The cloaked figure, still hovering above the old woman, takes no notice of you. It slowly reaches out a rotten and bony hand towards the woman.

It looks like it's... Feasting on her...

The patronus it seemed, was a good choice to accompany her into the depths of the forest. It provided her with the comfort Louise needed, letting her know that she wasn't alone. Except, as she approached closer to the screams, there was simultaneously the feeling of dread.

Which only grew when she spotted the older woman, lying on the ground, and a cloaked figure, a dementor, she was sure, judging from the way she felt. It felt almost worse than death and the seventh year willed herself to keep her happy thoughts, to not let the decay smells wash over her. Which, it turned out, was easier said than done. "No," she whispered, urging herself to keep going. The cloaked figure wasn't interested in her, which was good, but that doesn't mean she couldn't help the older woman, who reminded her so much of her grandmother.

Regardless, the older woman was helpless and needed her and she needed to help. And her patronus was weakening to the point where it faltered.

"Expecto Patronum!" Louise cast again, this time, the corporeal patronus with a more definite purpose than to just guide her and provide comfort. This time, the brightness to hopefully draw the cloaked figure away. That was what she was meant to do, right? Save the older woman? Was that the screaming? Or was it something worse, like a banshee? Only time would tell.

This time, your patronus shines bright and cuts through the darkness around you. The creature hovering above the older woman reacts by turning towards you. You got it to abandon the older woman but the happy memory that allows you to conjure the patronus is making the cloaked figure turn towards you instead.

As it moves away from the older woman, it reaches out a rotting hand towards you. As it gets closer, your patronus charges forward, flapping its wings to protect you from the complete darkness that you know the creature brings.

For a moment, you're unsure whether your patronus will be enough but the dark creature suddenly retracts. It's obviously unwilling to leave you or the older woman behind but is eventually forced back. It retreats back into the shadows, chased away by a bright, shining bird of a patronus.

The older woman on the ground whimpers, covering her face with her hands. "Help..." She whimpers, rocking back and forth. "Leave me alone..."

Was she talking to you? The hooded figure? ... Something else?

Unsure whether the second time would be strong enough, Louise held onto her happy thoughts as much as possible. But when the cloaked creature turned towards her, the seventh year was about to despair. Happy thoughts, happy thoughts, you can do it

Holding her wand steady in front of her, the dark-eyed girl tried her best to keep her breathing as even as possible. A feat proving more difficult. "Go," she willed the hooded creature, trying to be strong, yet fear was slowly creeping into her voice. Especially as the rotted hand extended toward her.

Just when it seemed she might have to summon another patronus and protection, the bird flapped towards the creature and it was forced back into the shadows.

Her attention now on the older woman, Louise frowned, confused. Help? Leave me alone? Was the second part intended for the creature? Was this a ploy? Keeping her distance from the older woman, her wand at the ready in front of her, Louise spoke. "You're safe now. Do you need help getting out of here?"

She wasn't sure she felt comfortable carrying the woman on her back, because distance and vigilance were everything. But there were other ways, while keeping her distance. Just in case it was another trap.

An uplifting feeling fills you as you are saved by your patronus. Light finally conquers darkness, happiness eliminating the sinking feeling of despair. The same can not be said about the older woman still on the ground.

"What is happening...?" The older woman lowers her hands from her face only to wrap her arms around herself. "What was that thing? How did you do that?" Her gaze is mixed with fear and confusion as she looks up at you.

If you wanted to turn and leave the area to avoid another attack; think again. It does not look like the older woman is able to stand on her own two feet any time soon.

You just saved her and your own life from a creature you knew exactly how to fight. There's not much else you can do to help her... Is there?

Now that the dark creature was around, Louise's attention was on getting out of here,
but also on the older woman in front of her. Her confusion was evident, but Louise had to wonder if maybe this woman was a no-maj. Obliviating the woman though was out of the question, because while she was sure could perform the charm, it just didn't seem right.

"It was just a dangerous creature," Louise explained briefly, figuring it best to not go into too much depth. In case this woman was a no-maj. Even the woman seemed harmless, there was something creepy about the forest that made her not want to touch the woman and keep her distance.

"We should get out of here," Louise said, although it became apparent that the woman was not going to be leaving on her own two feet. Transfiguring a nearby twig into a stretcher for the woman, she sighed, figuring it best to do it quick. If the woman was a no-maj, she'd already done magic in front of her, so what's a little more? Obliviation can happen at the end, if necessary.

"I'm going to levitate you onto this stretcher. Don't be alarmed," she said, figuring it best to be upfront. "Wingardium Leviosa." And assuming it worked and the woman was safely on the stretcher, they could leave now? Back out the way they came in or ... ?

Your transfiguration clearly alarms the woman. She lets out a little yelp and raises her arms in front of her face, as to defend herself from you.

"Levitate..." But before she has time to finish her sentence, you flick your wand and cast the spell.

Leaving this horrible place is a good idea, if the person you try to save is cooperating. As it happens...

"What in the WORLD do you think you're doing?!" The older woman, surprisingly quick on her feet, now stands, glaring at you. "What kind of creature are you?!" Her voice, somewhat shaky from old age but also confusion and fear.

Wouldn't leaving be just grand? But you won't get far if you don't calm her down first. She's obviously shocked from her meeting with the dementor.

Somehow you must get her to cooperate. But what can help her calm down?

Okay, so this transfiguration and levitation? Not such a good idea, it seemed. What Louise really wished she had was chocolate, because the substance was sweet and velvety and supposedly calming after a dementor meeting. Judging from her hostility though and the fact that she called Louise a creature, well, Louise was nearly positive now more than ever that the woman was a no-maj.

A calming draught. That was what she needed right about now. Except that while she could conjure water, she had no fluxweed oil or bloodroot stems, which meant she was vastly unprepared. Who knew she was supposed to carry a potion supply cabinet with her on this challenge? She thought just her wand would be enough. She had a rune set too, but she wasn't exactly the strongest when it came to runes and galdr incantations. Although if she didn't do something, then she might have to leave the hostile no-maj here and then likely would fail at this competition. A calming draught was not really an option and she couldn't think of any calming charms, except the cheering charm, which wasn't exactly the emotions she was trying to invoke.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you," Louise mumbled finally, wishing she had some Runes with her. Runes wasn't her strong point, but they could at least maybe help the temperament of the situation. Except Runes weren't an option. Think, Louise, think.

Sleep. Put the woman into a deep sleep, then she could levitate her onto the stretcher and get out of here. With a plan in place, the seventh year muttered the incantation to hopefully allow the older woman to fall into the deep sleep.

follow me; everything is all right.

The woman's sudden outburst of anger faded and when you apologized for startling her, she sunk down on the ground again. "It was so cold..." She mumbles to herself as you debate on what to do next. "So dark and so cold..."

Putting the woman to sleep will allow you to leave the forest before another dementor attacks, and prevent a possible smack on the head by that handbag of hers. And once you've left the arena, she'll be somebody else's problem. Maybe the adults could step in for a change?

... Or is the woman's fate completely in your hands?

"I wish this never happened..." The woman sobs quietly, her face hidden by her hands. "I just want to forget it ever did..."

Your spell to put her to sleep hits its target and the older woman let out a deep sigh. "So... Tired..." And yet she doesn't fall asleep.

It is an advanced spell after all. Will you try the same spell again to get her out of the forest? Or will you try another?

So many options...

Louise just stood there, staring at the sudden outbursts and mumblings about it being so cold. It was still rather dark, except then just before she cast her sleep charm, the woman said something that triggered some other spell. Memory charm. Only she wasn't sure she was all too comfortable with performing them; wasn't that why they paid obliviators for this nonsense? But the woman did want to forget about the situation.

There had to be another option. Considering her deep sleep plan just made the woman very tired, but that was all.

Confundus Charm, might confuse her enough to get the woman and herself out of the forest. She was confident in that spell casting at least. There was also another that she recently learned and mastered, as it was a seventh year spell. And that one might cover her bases so once she got the woman out of here, memory charm was not needed. It would give her thirty minutes, which was more than enough time, because she didn't even think she had thirty minutes left in the challenge.

Deep breath.

And with another quick movement, the seventh year cast the patented daydream charm, hoping it would be enough to allow her to maneuver the woman, before the dementor came back, or something worse.

The daydream charm; A nifty charm to know. Useful in long boring classes and as it happens, useful now. The woman's eyes turn hazy and she lowers her hands to look up at the sky, gaze unfocused. What she is thinking of remains unclear as she says nothing, merely places her chin in one hand and stares off into the distance.

The charm only lasts for 30 minutes, you may want to take this opportunity to get you both to safety.

Tick-tock...

Waiting to see if she might have to try the confundus charm as well, it seemed the daydream charm worked as it was meant to, judging the way the woman's posture took an unfocused gaze.

She only had thirty minutes though, which meant she had to move quickly, although she didn't think she even had that much time left in the challenge. "Wingardium Leviosa," Louise muttered again, as she hadn't been prepared to do so before startling the woman.

But now that the woman was in a daydream, she could maneuver her onto her transfigured stretcher from before and get them both out of here. Hopefully.

The old woman lets out a little surprised ‘Oh’ when you levitate her up on the stretcher. This time around, she stays on there. Her dreamy, dazed expression is still firmly in place. ”Hmm… And a teaspoon of sugar...” She mumbles, petting the stretcher and slowly lies back down on it.

Now… Which way did you come from?

Louise smiled a little when there was no complaints this time from the woman.
The daydream was working just like she intended, which it seemed was about cooking. Or perhaps that muggle show Mary Poppins, what was it she sang about? Oh right, that was just a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down.

Now time to get out of here, only one thing was missing. She needed some light so she could see ahead of her, while simultaneously being able to use her wand to levitate the woman carefully through the forest. Conjuring some bluebell flames for light, Louise then headed back in the direction she thought she had come from, with the older woman on the stretcher floating a couple feet in front of her.

At least it seemed she was backtracking.... She didn't recall too many turns.

follow me; everything is all right.

The bluebell flames light your way as you start to trace your footsteps back to where you came from. To keep you company is the humming tones of the older woman, reciting some old cooking recipe.

After a while, you notice the fog starts to clear and the trees stand further apart. You step around some bushes and suddenly...

You're out.

Wait.. Where did the old woman's humming go? You look over at your levitating stretcher; on top of it lies a dummy, wearing a white frilly blouse and a pink skirt. The exact same clothes the old woman was wearing earlier.

Then, a tall, lanky man reveals himself as he removes a disillusionment charm. Squinting your eyes you can make out the Ministry of Magic badge on his long, dark robes. He'd been following your every move, ready to act if needed. Seeing as this is the first time you see him, you made it without anyone else's help.

He nods in greeting. "Miss. Hamilton. Congratulations, you've successfully made it through this challenge." He hands you an old frying pan. "This portkey will take you back to the stands. Well done." As soon as your fingers wraps around the handle of the pan, you're whisked away from the man, the forest and everything you've faced and overcome inside it.

OOC: Well done indeed! You are now allowed to post in the viewing area as well as viewing the other competitors' threads. You made it!

One moment Louise had found herself humming along with the old woman who she rescued and the next, she was humming by herself. Well, that was awkward. Ceasing her own humming, she blinked a moment as she recollected her bearings on the surroundings. Wait, wait, that wasn't a no-maj? It was just a dummy charmed to come to life? Of all the things she'd seen in the hour, the seventh year couldn't deny that this little nugget of magic was definitely quite impressive.

Holstering her wand, she had been watching the dummy when she realized she was being watched. Which meant, he was with her the whole time, wasn't he? Ministry of Magic? That was the British version of MACUSA, she was fairly sure.

"Thank you sir," she nodded back, stepping away from the stretcher at last.
