Default IMPS Challenge #1 :: Aurora Chae

You find yourself standing at the edge of a dark forest with nothing but your wand to aide you. Tall, gnarled trees tower overhead, bunching close together as if to block out the sky. A thick fog covers the forest in an eerie haze that adds to the sense of overwhelming dread. Those who dare venture farther will quickly notice the temperature steadily dropping and darkness increasing with each step.

What dangers lie ahead in this place? Dare you even go inside?

OOC: Post in this thread for your challenge to begin. You will have until May 31st @ 11:59 PM GMT to complete this challenge. Good luck!

Aurora's heart was pounding in her ears as she walked slowly into her first challenge. Immediately, her analytical Horned Serpent brain began to take in her surroundings.

Ok, so she was in a forest, with some scary looking trees curling around above her, blocking the sky from her view. Her hair was pulled back in a braid to keep it from getting in her face and blocking her view, and even though she was sure she was going to be facing the hardest challenge of her life (thus far) she had still done her makeup to a T that morning. She was going to kick BUTT in this challenge, and there was no reason she couldn't look amazing while doing it!

She took a breath and let it back out, the cold air chilling her breath and causing it to fog in front of her face. This was all meant to frighten her, she was sure of it. Probably to psych her out. Once she got going, she was sure that whatever it was she faced, she could handle. She could do this...she could DO this.

Well, there was only one way to go - forward. It was getting colder with each step that she took, but thankfully Aurora was wearing a long sleeve tee as part of her battle gear. She knew it wouldn't do her much good as she got further - it was probably only going to get colder - but it was SOMETHING at least. "Lumos," she muttered under her breath as she pulled her wand from her holster.

It was hard to see through the mist, but hopefully the spell would be enough to stop her from walking into a tree, or whatever it was this challenge was going to throw her way.

follow me; everything is all right.

The light, otherwise a source of comfort, was anything but comforting in your current predicament. While it might be guiding your way forward, there was something about the long shadows that it cast that made it seem even more terrifying. It was as if there was something there... as if something was waiting, watching, just beyond your line of vision...

Apart from the sound of twigs crunching beneath your feet and the steady rhythmatic beating of your heart, everything was silent in this forest. Was the silence getting to you? Do you need a sound to break through the creepiness that is your surroundings?

Just when the silence seems almost too much to bear, you hear something that makes you wish it was silent again.
"AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!"
One scream, two screams... a multitude of screams can be heard through the forest. What's happening? Who's screaming? Where is it coming from? The answers to your questions aren't going to be answered by standing in one spot.

Keep your wits about you. It doesn't get easier from here.

Aurora let out a little yelp of her own when a loud scream pierced trough the silence and made her practically jump out of her skin. Once it passed, she took another deep breath to calm her nerves. That wasn't just one - that was MULTIPLE screams. Her heart started to race as she recalled past tournaments held at this castle - didn't she learn about one that involved capturing loved ones and holding them hostage? Something like that. Her heart began to race, wondering if somehow her siblings had gotten wrapped up in this and were being used as bait.

No, that was silly. And a LOT of work, bringing the whole Chae clan over to England just for one little challenge...

Despite getting startled, Aurora could feel herself feeling more in control once again and she pushed forward. She tried not to think about the cold air biting at her face, or the possibility that someone she KNEW was the source of the screams.

"HELLO? Who's out there??" she called in to the darkness as she walked. Bold strategy, she knew...but the sooner she found out the source of the disturbance, the sooner she could figure out what exactly this forest had in store for her.

Bold was one word for your move. Dangerous happened to be another.

Your strategy is futile but there's some solace in knowing that nothing had pounced on you the minute you called out. Instead, the screaming seemed to have changed.
"HEEEEELP! MAKE IT STOOOOP!"
The voice resumed its screaming again. The screaming was starting to get louder and louder, where not even the sound of breaking twigs could mask its sound. Your breath fogged up in front of you, mixing in with the fog of your surroundings and reminding you just how cold it was in this forest. The cold worsened, making you wonder: were you getting close to your destination?

After what seems like forever, you find yourself on the edge of a clearing. The fog dissipated some, leaving behind a horrific scene. The source of the screaming came from a very young girl who was curled up on the twig-strewn floor. The second figure, a hooded one, hovered above her, its black cloak billowing around it. It's hard not to notice the stench of decay that came with this scene. The figure drew in a deep, rattling breath, as if the figure was trying to suck on something that lingered in the air. As if on cue, you feel a cold air brush over you as a strange feeling starts to sink in. A feeling of despair and hopelessness...

Aurora was getting MUCH colder, which she assumed meant she was getting closer to...whatever the real challenge was. Either that or this was a super elaborate plan to freeze her to death. The screaming was back, although this time she could make out words. Someone was in trouble!

Her pace quickened, not so much because she was concerned about the well being of this person - but when she found the person, she would find the challenge. Then it would be GO TIME. Heart racing, she reached what looked like a small clearing - it was less foggy than the rest of the place, at least - and felt her heart drop.

GREAT. A dementor! That was NOT an easy obstacle...but at the same time, it was exciting! A REAL challenge to prove her worth. Her heart raced even faster. She glanced down at the girl in front of her - she had no idea who that was, but it was obvious what she had to do. Save the girl! Defense was one of her favorite subjects and she felt confident in her ability to draw up a Patronus. Despite the fact that she was so cold, she felt like a block of ice, and her brain was starting to doubt her skills. The dementor was starting to creep its way in to her head, and she had a sudden urge to curl up in to a ball and just let the fog consume her...

I can't do this...

Yes you can! That's the dementor talking!!

No, it's useless. You should just give up. You won't win. You're not the best. You never will be. You're the laughing stock of the whole school, you're going to lose, probably to VALERIE no less....

She shook her head, loose hairs falling from her braid and over her forehead. She narrowed her brown eyes and took a deep breath. That was all a trick, she could do this, she KNEW she could.

Concentrating all of her energy on her Patronus, she thought back to some of her favorite happy memories. Getting sorted in to Horned Serpent. Laying on the beach with her friends back home. Exploring Hogwarts with Irene. Her parents surprising her with a Yorkie puppy on her birthday this year...

"EXPECTO PATRONUM!" she cried, pointing her wand at the ghastly figure, using the joy from her memories to draw forth her peacock patronus. She hoped it worked...for her sake, and the young girl's.

Your presence has not gone unnoticed.

The figure stopped in its tracks and turned to face you, its nose guiding it. The sense of happiness was getting stronger, which meant that there was more for it to consume. Maybe a soul could be taken today. It disbanded its previous victim and started gliding towards you, instead. It drew in a few more deep, rattling breaths, its skeletal arms outstretched. It was going to feast today...

But then, a blinding flash of white light burst forth and took the form of a peacock patronus. Wings outstretched, the patronus charged down the figure, looking elegant and slightly scary at the same time. You feel a rush of warmth rush over you from the energy of the patronus as familiar feelings of hope and happiness started to return. The figure, defeated, glided away into the darkness of the forest.

It was right then, just as victory seemed to be in your grasp, that you hear a small, terrified voice. "Wh-what did you do? What was that white thing? Why... why are you holding a st-stick?"

Aurora couldn't help it - she shut her eyes tight as the blinding light of her patronus engulfed her. She knew that it had worked, miraculously, because she immediately felt the crushing cloud of despair lifting from around her. She felt like she was standing in a ray of sunshine, despite the fact that she was actually still in a dark, cold forest. She opened her eyes and grinned as the dementor flew off, leaving her and the young girl alone. Her peacock patronus flew off and slowly dissipated as well, disappearing into the darkness.

The comfort of the patronus was starting to fade, and Aurora was reminded again that she was in the middle of a foggy forest, and she began to feel the chill return to the air. Still, it was MUCH better compared to the cold that had surrounded her when the dementor had been here. She kept her wand up, just in case - there might be more dementors around. It would explain the fog, that was for sure. She took a deep breath and tried to remember all of her go-to happy thoughts, so she was ready in case she had to try and summon her patronus again.

Aurora turned to the young girl, who seemed unharmed, but obviously very scared. She didn't blame her. She raised a dark eyebrow when she asked why she was carrying a stick - this girl was old enough, if she was a witch, to know what a wand was. So that had to mean she was a No-Maj.

That...was a bit more terrifying than the dementor, to be honest. She hoped part of this challenge didn't involve having to obliviate her, because she had NO idea how to do that.

Even Aurora wasn't so cold-hearted as to leave a poor young girl in the middle of the forest all by herself. She bent down and reached out her hand for the girl to take. "It's ok, it saved us. And this, erm...stick will protect us. I promise," she assured her.

"Are you hurt? And did you see any more of those...hooded things around here?" she asked. She hoped that there was just the one...but this was a competition after all, so it wasn't likely. She had to remain on her guard.

And she didn't happen to have any chocolate on her, did she...?

Whether out of fear or upbringing, the young girl seemed a bit hesitant to take your hand. She looked at it closely and then up at you, as if deciding whether it was a safe move or not. Just when she looks as though she's going to refuse, her small hands clasp in on yours.

However, she doesn't look as though she's comforted by your words. Her eyes stay on your wand and she looks to be throwing it a few scared looks. "You pinky promise?" The voice was quiet but sounded more hopeful than it did before.

A look of confusion passes her face. "I f-fell," she said, plainly and simply, "Hooded things? I... I didn't see any hooded things. Th-there aren't any. It j-just felt cold... really cold and I heard... things..." The wobbling of her chin had punctuated her speech, making her break off completely so as to start crying. The tears came thick and fast but so did her next set of words.

"Was... was it you?! Did y-you m-make it cold a-and...?"

Oh no! How could she have been so stupid?! Aurora had completely forgotten that No-Maj's couldn't actually SEE dementors. And now she was crying. Aurora did NOT deal with crying kids! There was a REASON she had never babysat before. Mentally kicking herself, and hoping she didn't lose points for her mistake, she bit her lip. She had to think fast. She shook her head and knelt down so she was facing the young girl at eye level.

"No, no, I was mistaken. I didn't make it cold. There are these things...these creatures...you can't see them because they're invisible. If you're...older, like me, and have this stick, you can see them, and they have hoods and cloaks," she added, hoping that was enough of an explanation for her and would make up for her blunder. "They make you feel all sad and lonely...but that white thing you saw? That was a light. A light to drive away the bad, dark creature. It did the same thing to me that it did to you," she assured the girl, hoping that would make her trust her. Aurora didn't have any younger siblings and had never had to really appeal to a young kid before. She hoped what she was doing was working. Please stop crying, kid!

"I can bring that light back with this stick," she explained, gesturing to her wand. "If it comes back, I promise I'll bring it back to get rid of the creature. Pinky promise," she added, grinning at the girl and letting go of her hand, so she could offer her a perfectly manicured pinky to show she was serious.

"Now, how did you get here? Do you know a way out of this forest?" she asked. She wanted the young girl to trust her, but she also couldn't sit here for HOURS, they had to keep moving...

Your words seemed to be working. The tears started to subside the minute you start talking and reassuring the young girl. There's a look of wild curiosity that tells you that she's hanging onto your every word. "Th-then they're very bad. Bad bad bad." After you finish talking, there's a long silence where the girl looks between you and your pinky, as if evaluating the decision, before her small, pink finger wraps around yours.

The question was much harder to answer for the girl. There was a pause in which the girl seemed to be thinking about her response before she shook her head, her hair flying around her shoulders. "I-I don't remember. I can't remember. I j-just found myself here and I tried to find my way out but..." She broke off, her chin wobbling so hard that she looked to be dangerously close to tears again.

"C-can we get out of here? It's r-really cold and I don't... I don't like it."

Aurora let out a sigh and smiled in relief. Thank goodness she'd managed to jump over that small hurdle (that she had created herself, whoops). She grinned at the girl as she put her pinky around hers, having finally earned her trust. Now, she just had to keep it. And, of course, protect her. She was positive that was the true challenge here - keep the girl safe and get her out of here.

This challenge was a LOT harder than she had anticipated. Why couldn't it just be taking on a swarm of dementors? At this point, that might be easier, because kids and Aurora didn't mix. At all. She was honestly surprising herself with her ability to calm the girl down. Maybe she was just a natural at this?? After all, it's not like she had actually TRIED to interact with kids before...

Of course, it would be asinine for her to actually wish for a swarm of dementors. She hoped this wasn't one of those simulations that could read her thoughts or something, because she might be eating her (unspoken) words in a few moments...

OH NO. Crying again. True, no tears had actually fallen just yet, but she could tell she was about to burst out in to tears soon. It was a look that she herself probably had upon her face many times as a kid. She took the young girl's hand in hers again and gave it a squeeze. "It's ok, we'll get out of here together. I've got the stick ready to go in case I need it," she added, showing her the wand again with a small smile to try and lighten the mood just a bit. "Let's see, I came from that way..." she turned and pointed to the area that she had come from. "So we should probably go the other way, because the way out is definitely NOT that way," she told her. Yup, going backwards was not going to be productive in the slightest.

Once again, the wobbling ceased the minute your hand makes contact with the young girl's and, despite the lack of words, she squeezed your hand in return. Her hand remained firmly gripped to yours and there was no sign that she was going to let go anytime soon. She looked up at you and gives you a nod of her head to indicate that she was willing to go along with your plan. In that short space of time, it seems as though you've gained her trust. Well done.

Clutching onto you for support, the girl manages to get herself up into a standing position. She looks to be cold and far more pale than she should be but there's solace in knowing that she was now using you as her guide and her saviour. "L-Let's go. I don't want the i-invisible things to come back."

Aurora nodded in agreement. "The more we keep moving, the harder it will be for them to find us," she told the girl. It was...sort of nice that she trusted her so much. This wasn't so bad. She would do the same thing if it was, say, Irene that she had stumbled upon in the woods. This was just like...a mini classmate. That she had to avoid using magical words around. Not too bad. For some reason, it made HER feel a bit better as well, having someone here. Granted, this girl would be absolutely no help if the dementors came back, but at least she wasn't alone anymore.

Aurora hated being alone. It was why she was so outgoing - so she could make friends wherever she went. So, in essence...she had been training for this her whole life!

She couldn't wait to get home and tell her parents that yes, talking WAS a useful skill that had actually come in handy in her life.

She noticed that the young girl looked...a bit paler than she should. Of course, Aurora didn't have any chocolate on her, which is what would be ideal to help the girl feel a bit better. Such a shame that the laws of transfiguration prevented her from being able to just whisk it here out of thin air. She made sure to keep an eye on the young girl as they continued forward, making sure she didn't look like she was going to faint or pass out any time soon. If she was...well, she was ready to catch her and carry her to the finish line, if she had to.

She really hoped she didn't, though. Aurora did arm day when she worked out, of course, but that would be exhausting, carrying a passed out child to the end of this challenge!

"What's your name? I'm Aurora," she introduced herself to her with a soft smile. She wanted to continue making this girl feel more comfortable (plus talking would stop her from like, passing out, hopefully) but it also broke the unbearable silence.

The girl nods in response to your request as the two of you walk forward. "I d-don't want to find them every again... th-the invisible things." Almost on cue, the girl shivered at the mere memory of what happened. "I c-can't wait to tell mom! I bet sh-she can do it too! Hey!" She turned to face you, her tear-stained face looking slightly more hopeful. "Y-you can tell her all about it! She'd believe you."

"Aurora? Like the princess?!" she gasped, her grip tightening on your hand, slightly, "My name's Kate. It's not a princess name." She continues to follow you through the forest which, if you're observant enough, starts to feel longer than the journey into the forest did. But you can take solace in the fact that nothing was jumping out of you from within the shadows. It's just you and a young girl who remembers everything...

As they walked along the seemingly never ending passage out of the forest (or so Aurora hoped) she couldn't help but notice that the girl was getting really chatty. Like, REALLY chatty. She bit her lip. Part of her wanted to keep going along with it - after all, this girl would have to be obliviated at some point, right? So would it really hurt to let her in more on their secrets? Probably. She really shouldn't. Yet she was now talking about getting her mom involved in this. Aurora wasn't even sure this girl HAD a mom, or if she was even real - was any of this real?? REALLY? Oh man. She did NOT want to fall down that rabbit hole.

Still, she had to do SOMETHING. She smiled when the girl related her name to a princess. Aurora didn't know much about No-Maj culture, but she SURE knew about that princess. DUH. Of COURSE she knew about the princess with her name. She giggled. "Kate can be a princess name if you really want it to be," she assured her. "You could grow up to be a princess. You never know! In fact, can you keep a secret? I AM a princess. That's why I have this stick that can protect you," she explained. There. That should suffice and also explain why her mom wasn't wielding magic sticks too. Because obviously, this girl's mom was NOT a witch. She was still nervous that at some point, SHE was going to have to obliviate this girl. She knew the spell of course, but would she be able to pull it off? It was starting to make her nervous, and she liked this little girl - it would be a shame to have to totally wipe her memory.

Nothing was happening. Like, NOTHING. Were they going the right away? Surely they should have found an exit by now? Aurora stopped, looking down at the young girl. "I know you said you can't really remember how you got here...but are you SURE?" she asked. "Were you with your mom before you came here?" she asked as a follow up. Now that she was talking more, Aurora hoped she could get more information out of her. Maybe the more she kept the little girl talking, the more she would be able to jog her memory and figure out how to get out of here.

"I just want to be sure we're not going the wrong way. This seems to be taking a while," she explained, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze again. Come on, little No-Maj girl, you could do it! YOU COULD REMEMBER! She waited for her response, facing forward, ready to start moving again if she couldn't remember. If she couldn't...well, forward was the best guess she had. If not...where else were they supposed to go?

If only she knew which DIRECTION she was supposed to go! She could use her wand as a compass. Booo. That would do her pretty much no good, having no idea which direction she was supposed to be headed.

Getting frustrated by your long journey? It's a pity because the young girl hanging onto your every word won't be able to help you...

"I-I can? A r-real princess? With the stick?" Her round eyes that had looked hopeful just moments before were starting to droop. "But... but mommy says that magic doesn't exist. Th-that princesses are only in stories and fairytales."

At your question, the young girl took a moment to frown in thought before shaking her head, her hair bouncing along her shoulders. "N-no. I just found myself here... all by myself... I-I can't remember anything else from before..." She let out a small wibble before looking up at you again. "I d-don't want to remember anything f-from this horrible place. Apart from you."

Was that a sign?

She didn't want to remember. Well, that sign was as clear as day. Despite the fact that Aurora KNEW this girl wasn't real - she was some sort of trick, or just a random girl who was never in any actual danger - it still hurt her heart when it started to dawn on her what exactly she had to do. Great. She KNEW it would have to come down to this. She should have seen it coming. She was positive that this was the right move...but she wasn't sure if the challenge would just end, or if she would be charged with taking the girl out of the forest after this and getting her to safety.

There was only one way to find out.

"Don't worry, you won't have to remember any of this. I promise," she told her. She gave her hand a quick squeeze again before dropping it. Aurora paused and took a deep breath. She could do this. She could DO this. She bit her lip and focused her energy on the task at hand. She had to erase her memory of the dementor...and of course, of her. That kind of sucked. She had been so excited thinking she was actually a princess...

Her brain quickly thought up an explanation to feed her as soon as it was over. The girl would forget why she was here, and who she was. She'd have to get her to trust her all over again. Aurora formed the backstory that she would feed her as soon as she was certain the spell had worked. She'd tell her that she had stumbled upon her - she must have gotten lost from her mother - and she had been sent to find her and bring her to her. She knew her name, so she'd be able to use that to gain her trust again. Yes, that would work. Plan at the ready, now it was time to do what she had been dreading - erasing her memory.

She pointed at the girl with her wand, focusing all her efforts on erasing the memory of the past hour. She had to go that far back, to be sure she got all thoughts of the dementor out of her brain. "Obliviate," she said, strongly and clearly, wand pointed between her eyes. Poor girl, that must be a terrifying sight, but it would all be over in a minute...she hoped...

As tough as it might have been, you can take solace in the fact that your spell seemed to be working. Whereas before, the girl had looked both excited at the prospect of meeting a princess while also being on the verge of tears again, the minute your memory charm was cast, her expression became neutral, as if she was void of any emotion. Her eyes became cloudy and glazed over, as if she was in some sort of trance.

And then the moment passed.

She stood there, looking up at you with a growing look of confusion and slight fear. "W-who are you? Wh-what's going on? Where's my... my mommy?" She looked around her, as if expecting her mommy to pop out amongst the shadows but when no one did, she looked back up at you, hopeful for some answers.

Aurora let out a sigh of relief as the young girl's eyes glazed over. That was a sure sign that her spell had been successful. That...had been a rush! She had no idea that she could actually obliviate someone! She knew the spell of course, but had never had any reason to do it. And on her first try, she'd been successful! Huh. Maybe that was a possible career. Obliviatior. Might be something to think about...

This was not the time, however.

She could tell that the young girl was starting to get upset again. Aurora slipped her wand in to her holster discretely, hoping she would avoid having to explain that. Prepared with what she was going to say, she bent down to the young girl's level and gave her a comforting smile. "Ssh, it's ok Kate. Your mom sent me in here to get you. I'm a friend of hers, she invited me to go hiking with you two, but when I finally caught up with you guys, she told me you had run off to follow a pack of deers you saw, and she asked me to help find you" she told her. She spoke soft and smooth, hoping that her calm demeanor would get the young girl to trust her, rather than to make her nervous about the fact that she had no memory of this story Aurora was making up. Each word rolled off her pink lips with ease, though, hopefully giving no indication that it wasn't true.

"You must have followed them here, but they seem to be gone now,"
she explained expertly, the lie rolling off her tongue so convincingly that even Aurora thought for a second it might have been true. She would likely never know how this girl ACTUALLY got here...but hopefully her story was convincing enough. She looked around, as if searching for a pack of deer to back up her story.

"My name is Aurora. Come on, we should go back," she told her, gesturing her for to follow her with a smile. She wanted to move a bit quicker this time around, and hopefully her explanation was enough to get her to trust her. She felt like she had been in this forest forever, and she was certain she didn't have a WHOLE lot of time to try and earn her trust all over again...

Clever competitor. The moment you utter the girl's name is the moment her expression changes. As you predicted, she seems to have placed quite a bit of trust in you because of this one, small addition. As a result, Kate doesn't seem to question your story entirely but does have one question on her mind: "Are the deer okay?"

At your suggestion, the young girl nods in response and quietly slips her hand into yours. "I wish I got a picture of the deer. Mommy would have liked that." She follows your path without question or doubt and, if you're observant enough, she doesn't need to question or doubt it. With every step you take, your surroundings start to change ever so slowly. The trees start to get thinner and thinner the further you venture ahead, the light from the sky starts to seep through between the branches and the cold is starting to vanish completely. In fact, before you know it, you're stepping out of the forest and into a wide expanse of grassy area.

Kate starts to change too. Her skin becomes more porcelain and plastic-like, her hair seems to be shrinking and shooting into her skull and her height grows until it's taller than yours. The girl you rescued in the forest has been transformed into a plastic dummy, similar to the kind you'd find in gyms.

If your eyesight is sharp enough, you might notice the vague outlines of a disillusioned figure stepping out from the forest. The figure waves a wand over her head, lifting the charm and revealing her identity. "Congratulations! You've completed the first challenge," the Ministry official says, holding out an old, used hairbrush that has most of its bristles missing, "This is your portkey. It will transport you to the stands. Be careful not to miss it."

Taking out her wand, she waves her wand in the direction of the dummy beside you, making it levitate up and away from you. Meanwhile, the hairbrush starts to glow a bright blue, ready to whisk you away...

OOC: You can now look at the viewing area and other competitors' threads.

Aurora grinned at the young girl. "Don't sorry, they're just fine. Just ran away is all," she explained. As they walked, she of course noticed that the scenery was changing and she grinned again. This was it! This had to be near the end!

And just like that, Kate was a dummy. That was a fancy trick. She couldn't help but so a little jump and clap of excitement as the Ministry worker told her she had just completed the challenge. "Thanks!" she exclaimed. She reached out and grabbed the brush eagerly, and with a whoosh, was gone.
