Merlin's beard it was entirely too early for History of Magic. Jessa could still feel the breakfast in her stomach on the way up the stairs and even more, she could still feel the drowsiness that came with a full stomach. Add to that the mind numbing subject that History of Magic was and you had a Ravenclaw dragging her feet as she entered the classroom.

It was hard to get enthused about theoretical lessons. Usually the concepts went in through one ear and came out through the next. Sitting in the same spot for an hour and listening to a wall of information being stuffed into her brain wasn't exactly her idea of learning. To really get things, she needed to get her hands into it, play the part, watch it in action and deconstruct it. That was seldom the case with these lessons, leaving her with a lot of notes she always needed to catch up on.

Good thing her friends were so brilliant at explaining and that they sometimes humoured her with actions while they were at it.

"Morning Professor." Jessa greeted with a small yawn. Oh snacks. From her seat, she levitated a couple things over to her desk, already knowing that between the warmth, the extra food and the no doubt long and convoluted discussion that was sure to begin, she stood very little chance of staying awake.

She would try her best though.

Today was turning out to be a good day so far for the first year, but the monotony of History of Magic was sure to change that. Emmeline trudged up the stairs after breakfast slowly. She had been super tempted to ask Abey how he managed to skip lessons today, because Sirius had been so hyper before breakfast that she really wanted to be outside chasing him around the pasture behind the nursery. At least the history professor was always nice, though that didn't change the fact that her lessons often involved reading and writing and boring stuff like that. Though to be fair, Emmeline doubted that any lessons would seem exciting to her today -- not when she really wanted to be playing with her cruppy, anyway. Still, the Gryffindor gave the History of Magic professor a cheery smile as she entered the classroom: "Morning, Professor!" It wasn't the professor's fault that Sirius was actually playful in the mornings for once, or that Emmeline didn't like theory lessons. That was just part of school sometimes.

She was really, super grateful that Professor Newton had decided to hold this lesson inside the castle, and even more grateful for the heating spells that she'd obviously cast around her classroom. Way too many professors had decided to hold their lessons outside lately for the first year's taste. Emmeline snagged a hot chocolate as she made her way to her seat; she didn't intend to drink it, because Derf's warnings still rang in her head every time a professor gave them food, but the cup would be really useful to keep her hands warm. She slid into her usual seat and smiled over at Jessa: "Hi Jessa! How're you?"

History of Magic.... This was getting tricky.

Because Olivia understood that this class was....a certain person's favorite, she was tentative in just showing up willy nilly. It wasn't her intention to make anyone uncomfortable, but also....she couldn't afford to miss out on any important lessons. Her grades were pretty fantastic at the current moment and she simply refused to waste all her hard work due to dumb feelings. In fact, Liv was too stubborn for that. Who wasn't aware? This Gryffindor lady wouldn't be broken.

Though, she had been busting her bum in the library lately; pouring over spellboooks and rewriting her notes for the more practical subjects. Liv was so determined to pass the Transfiguration OWL, it was ridiculous. Well, she was determined to pass ALL her OWLs, of course, but that one more than the rest. Personal reasons...

Gosh, the room was warm. Having worked up a lot body heat from the walk over, the blonde paused in the doorway, shedding her outer school robe. Strange, maybe, but the chill hadn't been bothering her so much lately. It was more bracing than troublesome. Woke her up, and yes, there were those aforementioned warming charms but they could only cut so much of the harsh January cold. January....

It reminded her.... Uh, of something that could wait until later, actually. After class...

Grabbing a hot drink, because her lessons always featured snacks, Olivia sat near both Jessa and Emmeline. "Ladies." She was all smiles and charm, though it was mostly forced for appearances sake. Was there really any reason to be sour in her lessons? That was asking for questions. Those weren't being accepted at the moment. "How is everyone this morning?"

Also, she saw you, Professor Newton. "Professor, having a good morning?"

The only issue Stasya had with the early time for the lesson was that it meant she hadn’t been able to go out to the barn between breakfast and the lesson. Instead, she planned on trying to run out there afterward, before her next lesson of the day, but it still made her feel guilty. Like Dobby and Albus were going to think they’d been forgotten just because she wasn’t there when she’d normally been. But breakfast was important too, especially since she still fully wanted to follow Derf’s advice and stay away from snacks provided during lessons. The last one of those she’d eaten was the popcorn ball from the disastrous Charms lesson, and she’d only eaten that because she’d needed something to do while she’d been waiting for Emmeline and the others to be checked out by Healer Reed. Ever since then, she’d tried to avoid lesson snacks.

Plus, it was hard to be too disappointed when the lesson wasn’t outside like so many of the others had been lately. Even without the heating charms that she knew the professors cast on the classrooms, it was warmer inside than it was outside, and since she hadn’t been able to go out to the barn she was closer. She’d walked in not far behind Liv, going over to sit by her, Jessa and Emmeline without even pausing to think, or to even really consider the snack table. She normally sat with them, so she wasn’t going to change now. Plus, she could try to leave spots for Derf and Abey if they came to the lesson.

“Good morning Professor Newton,” she greeted the professor with a smile, before she’d turned to the other girls. “Hi!” She could still be excited for the lesson, even if she felt guilty over not visiting her creatures first. Besides, it was Emmeline, Jessa and Liv. That meant extra excitement, or at least it meant things would be interesting.

Liv thought it was a chilly day but loved that Professor Newton had cast Heating Charms all over the classroom. She felt nice and warm. She was awake and comfortable; she was a morning person after all.

Liv watched the teacher as she drank her coffee and waited for the lesson to start. She was excited about the cookies on the table and the sweet cocoa. She went and grabbed what she want and sat down.

TIRED? Who was tired? Certainly not Cameron!

He was a morning person after all. So here he was! 100% ready for this lesson! Even though it wasn't his FAVORITE class or anything but it was alright. He'd already learned quite a bit in History of Magic so he had high hopes for this lesson as well. Okay, maybe not HIGH. Like, average. Not low though.

"Good morning, professor!" Cameron greeted the woman with a smile upon entering the classroom. Oooh. Look. Cookies! Simply assuming they'd been set out for them, he helped himself to a few and also took a cup of hot chocolate. It most definitely wouldn't be as good as his mum's but it would have to do. He hadn't brought his little thermo of his own today.

Sliding into the seat next to Jessa, he smiled at his friend too and offered her some of the cookies he'd taken. "Morning." Hi. He was here.

Having had an early prefect shift, Kitty was not at all tired for today's first class. The fact that it was history of Magic made her even less tired. You never knew what could happen in this subject.

"Good morning professor," she said as she entered and immediately sat near the back of the class, instead of up front like she used to.

Her pose was slightly defensive, but you'd only notice it if you really were paying attention. Otherwise she looked calm.

Levi was having one of those another perfectly good mornings, cold or not, so the boy pretty much bounded into the History of Magic classroom. He had a smile for Professor Newton, which only widened at the sight of hot chocolate. The sixth year helped himself with some before heading over to take a seat near the middle of the room.

.........Why was he always leaving the greeting part for the end?

"Good morning, Professor."

Bounding into the classroom, Derf didn't even give the usual table set up with treats and drinks so much as a glance today. Nope. Just a whooooooooole lot of NOPE! History of Magic was not exactly his best subject, but it wasn't his worst either. Depending on the topic he could find it quite interesting. Although the previous lesson had merely been himself indulging in his obsession with his hero for life. No real complaints THERE. "Hi profes-s-ssor!" he greeted with a small wave, noting a few of his friends present but making a veeeeeery direct beeline towards someone else.

The rim of the cup was nearly to his lips when Derfael Ashburry-Hawthorne arrived. Levi offered the younger boy a perfectly polite smile that upon his words, very quickly attempted to dissolve into laughter. But he was the polite boy his mother had raised him to be, so he settled for a grin wide enough to show dimples.

He quirked up one of his eyebrows, and he whispered back just for his ears, "I'll take my chances. Living on the edge and whatnot--it's all part of the Gryffindor experience, I think." He paused, and pretended to consider his words. "We can always just ask her, too. She won't expect it which means she won't have time to come up with a believable lie if she is a... hag." Please.

Newton was basically an angel. She looked like one, too, so that was fitting. Which was an unexpected thought to have about the History of Magic professor but there it was now, out in the open planes of his own brain. And there was little he could do to stop it.

How unfortunate.

Etta slowly made her way to her next class, feeling less enthusiastic than usual. She enjoyed History of Magic, she really did, but the fact that it was an early morning class was.. yeah. Just, no. She felt tired and way too sleepy but tried to maintain a pleasant smile on her face as she entered class, giving the professor a nod. "Hello, professor." She greeted before making her way to an empty seat somewhere near the middle of the classroom.

She sat down, dropped her bag to the floor.. not really in the mood for snacks or beverages. Pulling out her parchment and quill, she started to doodle absently as she waited for class to begin.

The food set out by Professor Newton looked far too sugary for Nicky's palette, but he did help himself to some tea. No one could go wrong with tea, right? Or so he hoped, because he was convinced it would be rude to ignore the fixings she had so graciously set out for them.

And he was English, after all.

"Good day, Professor. Thank you for the drink." Sipping his tea (it was fine, thank Merlin), he set his things down at a desk far away from everyone else currently in the room.

That was the best (and only) way to enjoy one's tea.

Thank Merlin. Finally, an indoor class. As Shay entered the History of Magic classroom, she was pleased to see that the room was actually toasty. "Good Morning Professor", she said cheerfully. Nothing like being nice and warm to get the brain working.

Shay stopped at the snack table for some hot chocolate and a couple of cookies. Then she found a seat. Pushing her goodies to the side, she got out her parchment, quill and textbook. Now she could enjoy her treats while waiting for class to begin.

Finally, a class that wasn’t outside in the cold, even if the stone castle of Hogwarts wasn’t completely immune from the chill of its muggle counterparts. At least the walls offered SOME relief in the grand scheme of things. Though as Cassie approached the History of Magic classroom, she could already feel that the walls weren’t going to be the only protection from freezing. The presence of warming charms was evident as she entered the room of which the Ravenclaw was glad. She might have gotten used to even liked the cold, but she loved the warmth as well.

“Good Morning, Professor,” she greeted Professor Newton as she moved past the woman and her desk, pouring herself a mug of hot chocolate in the process. “Hey,” she greeted Levi as she took a spot nearby, her eyebrow raising slightly as she caught the tail-end of what he had said. Just what were the Gryffindor and younger Hufflepuff talking about?

Running off a few hours of sleep, Althea made it a point to try and be on time for class. She couldn't help but yawn as she made her into the History of Magic classroom. It was warm, and she was grateful for that. Still, she wondered if the warmth would make her feel even more sleepier than she already did. Whatever. If she fell asleep, it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Grabbing a hot chocolate, Althea made her way further in. "Good Morning, Professor," she said with a smile, albeit rather sleepily, before turning and shuffling through the rows of seats over to where Levi was seated. "Hi, can you help me with Potions in your free time, please?" She didn't bother to wait for his answer. With her free hand, Althea playfully tapped the top of Levi's head, a sisterly greeting of sorts, before raising an eyebrow at the Enigma of Hufflepuff. He was very, very amusing. "Hello, Derf." She smiled at him as well - positive vibes everywhere, okay - and then took a seat in the back. That way, if she fell asleep she could do it without attracting attention.

History of magic was always an interesting class. If by interesting, one enjoyed the comedic debates that always seemed to evolve in this class. Made Skylar feel bad for Professor Newton because the woman was quite lovely and she was dating Sky's favorite professor which automatically gave the woman bonus points.

Smiling upon seeing the spread of refreshments include coffee this time, the fourth year grinned at the woman. "Hello Professor," though she didn't want coffee today. She just thought some students might want it as an option. Though when she did drink it, it was usually mixed with hot cocoa.

Also those chocolate marshmallow cookies looked so tempting but then she realized she better not because tryouts for the under 17 team were approaching and last thing she needed was for her endurance to not be up to par. So instead she passed by all the refreshments and took a seat in the middle, because prime location for any entertainment happenings

Rosalyn sent a smile to Jessa, but noticed that she seemed to be feeling rather tired this morning; not entirely surprising. She herself was feeling rather sleepy. Of course the coffee helped, and starting the lesson would as well. "Good morning, Miss Cambridge." Watching the girl levitating snacks towards her seat caused Rosalyn to smile. Hopefully there wouldn't be any accidents!

It wasn't a big surprise that Stasya didn't grab a snack; it seemed that more and more students were becoming wary of the things offered during lessons. Rosalyn wasn't offended by this because at least the students were being vigilant, but she would NEVER tamper with anything given to them. Of course she had heard stories of things that had been slipped into lesson snacks and if she was in their shoes she very well might have acted the same way.

Another glance at her watch showed Rosalyn that it was getting closer to the time where she would need to start the lesson. Still people had enough time to arrive, and as she looked up again she saw Derf make his way inside the classroom.

"Morning, Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne." No surprise that he bypassed the snacks. He was one of the students who practiced constant vigilance as far as they were concerned.

Smiling upon seeing the spread of refreshments include coffee this time, the fourth year grinned at the woman. "Hello Professor," though she didn't want coffee today. She just thought some students might want it as an option. Though when she did drink it, it was usually mixed with hot cocoa.

Also those chocolate marshmallow cookies looked so tempting but then she realized she better not because tryouts for the under 17 team were approaching and last thing she needed was for her endurance to not be up to par. So instead she passed by all the refreshments and took a seat in the middle, because prime location for any entertainment happenings

"Morning, Miss Diggory!" Rosalyn smiled as the girl entered the classroom right after Althea. It was slightly surprising to see her pass up a drink, but of course there was nothing wrong with that. Maybe the heating spells had done more than enough when it came to warming up.

Right.

It was time for the lesson to begin.

Getting up from her seat, she headed to the doorway and scanned the hallway just to make sure that there were no stragglers. Not seeing any, she shut the door. Anyone coming in after this point would just have to deal with losing a couple points. Hopefully that didn't happen, but there was nothing to be done about it. Everyone had to wake up early at times even if they didn't want to.

Smiling, she made her way to the front of the classroom so that she could dive right into the lesson. First she would gage just how much her students knew about the topic at hand, which was her preferred way of doing things. "Morning, everyone. Since we have guests from Ilvermorny visiting us, I thought that it would be a good idea to focus today's lesson on something more American." Something that her students from North America would probably be pretty happy about. "To start off, I would like for you to tell me anything that you know about MACUSA." Even if it was just a small fact, she wanted to have an idea of what her students were aware of when it came to MACUSA.

OOC: Hey, everyone! I'll be moving things along in approximately 24 hours.

The way everyone else seemed so chipper today told her she may very well have been the only one who thought it was entirely too early for this lesson. Circe, maybe she should have levitated herself some of the coffee...except, Jessa didn't fancy the taste of coffee very much and could do without an actual stimulant in this less than stimulating environment. History of Magic was the last place she would want to be hyper. That would only lead to a whole lot of pent up energy she didn't know what to do with and fidgeting.

"I'm exhausted." She replied to Emmeline's query on how she was doing, just seconds before Olivia also greeted them. "Hiiii." Even a wiggly fingered wave for the older girl as she returned her greeting.

Stasya got a smile as she took the spot next to them--oh Cameron! Despite the tiredness, Jessa managed a grin for him, accepting on of the cookies he'd offered. "If I start falling asleep, you guys have to wake me up." She whispered, being perfectly legit about it. The fatigue was real and this lesson would not help. History of Magic was just NOT her thing at all.

Vaguely she was aware of the conversation with Derf and Levi but if she had to tell Derf one more time that the food turned up nothing, she didn't know what she'd do. She didn't even know WHERE he got that idea in the first place.

Head back on her desk, Jessa nibbled at her cookie while she listened to the Professor begin the lesson. There was no helping the way her nose wrinkled at the mention of learning something American because of their guests. They had long since lost their novelty in the young girls eyes and took their lessons separately with their own Professors that had come over with them, so why did they have to sit and listen through American history?

Also, what was MACUSA? She turned her head in the direction of her friends, giving a puzzled look. Did any of them know? She'd never heard about it before.

Vivian had been here ALL the time. She was totally seated beside Skylar, as usual because who else would she have sat with? And she was totally listening to Professor Newton. See? She was all ears for today's lesson!

Hmmm, this would be interesting. Vivian loved learning about other countries. She hadn't even talked much with any of the Ilvermorny students, with the exemption of Evan... but he sort of pushed her away because he wanted to do his homework alone. There were so many things she wanted to know about America, like... whyyyy do they adore those long red sausages so much? She was naturally curious, and so Vivian was definitely hanging on to every word the Professor said.

MACUSA? Oooooh, wasn't that the American version of their Ministry of Magic? That was kinda obvious, though. And probably just one of the few facts she knew about the Magical Congress, anyway. Hmm. Not wanting for anyone else to snag her fact, Vivian raised her hand. "Professor, the MACUSA was very much particular, and probably stricter, about the interaction and relationships between the wizards and the muggles..." Eh, wrong term. The Americans didn't refer to normal humans as such. "No-Majs, I mean. That's their term for non-magical folk." The blonde smiled after she had finished sharing her answer.

Noelle had just made it in before class started. She didn't say any hellos because as soon as she sat down next to Althea, class was starting. She gave her friend a smile hello before getting her things ready for class.

She'd still had her hair up from training and was probably looking a hot mess because she'd hurriedly cleaned up and put on her school uniform before scurrying to class. She'd been surprised she even made it on time, to be honest. Knowing her scar was probably showing and very self-conscious of that, she pulled her hair free from her ponytail and over her shoulders.

History of Magic was no where near her favorite class, but sometimes it was more fun than she thought it would be. Hopefully this would be one of those times. MACUSA? Hmm... What did she know?

She was appalled at Vivi's answer. Was that true??? Being from a half-blood family, she was glad that that rule wasn't enforced around here. She might not have ever been born.

"I heard my mom talking about it starting due to the Salem Witch Trails." Noelle offered. But she really didn't know much about MACUSA. Merlin, she still needed to know a lot more about her own government.

Etta decided to grab a cup of coffee because she was literally falling asleep as time passed. She had no idea why she was so tired, though. It made no sense. With coffee in hand, she sat down at her seat just as the professor started with the lesson. MACUSA.. uh. She'd read a few things about it. She took a small sip of her hot beverage before raising a hand to answer the question.

"It was established in the year 1693, when the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy was introduced... they created rules and regulations to protect the American wizards." She took another sip of her coffee, quietly listening to the others give answers.

They had to answer questions about MACUSA? Kane grinned to himself and sat up a bit straighter. This lesson should be a breeze for him! Granted, he didn't know a WHOLE lot about the government, but he knew enough that he should be able to answer all the basic questions here.

He raised his hand. "They had a President, rather than a Minister. Same thing pretty much, just a different title," he explained.

Giving on Derf's conspiracies for the moment, Levi began sipping on his hot chocolate. He tried very hard not to consider mulling over the discovery of Professor Newton's good looks so he focused on his surroundings instead. Jessa Cambridge looked tired and she received a small smile; he'd completely missed her when he first arrived. Cassie got a wider smile because friends were always nice to see. Then Althea showed up and she also looked tired, which he supposed was a result of OWLs. He nodded along to her request, though did wonder if his detailed (yet completely messy) Potions notes from the previous term had been of any help at all.

Probably not.

Ilvermorny continued to be the main topic of conversation of the whole school year, it seemed, and Levi continued to drink his hot chocolate. He set down the half empty cup and looked for his journal, in which he quickly began taking some notes. Presidents. Or a president. The Americans' answer to the United Kingdom's Minister for Magic.

"President." Hm. "It seems to me that the American government, just like ours, takes some cues from our muggle counterparts." He tried not to grin at the irony of it all. "Which is funny when you consider the way wizardkind spent centuries looking down on muggles--or no-majs in this case." And he supposed that plenty of wizards still did. Ridiculous. He was largely uninterested in what the muggle world had to offer--there was just too much to get his hands to in his own world of magic--but to underestimate muggles had always struck the boy as foolish. They'd managed thus far without magic just fine so much that they didn't need it at all. Muggles were a forced to be reckoned with and Levi felt sorry for anyone who thought otherwise."We're always borrowing from their culture, are we not?" Trains, cars, pants. Name it and wizards had adapted it for their own. "It's interesting. But, anyway, MACUSA--" To get back to the topic at hand, "--the headquarters are in New York."

The fifth year felt a little bad that she was asking her brother for help. He already had the competition to worry about, plus his own studies, and he had given her his notes already. But, Potions was not her forte and she wanted to make sure that she was actually retaining the information.

Althea had begun the process of getting out her things for class when the professor started talking. She took a few sips of her hot chocolate and carefully placed the drink down far enough from her notes (so she wouldn't spill any on them) and close enough for her to reach. There. After mulling over the professor's question (and also taking her classmates' answers into consideration,) Althea raised her hand. "If I'm remembering correctly," and she hoped she was "they used the Wizards' Council of Great Britain as a model for MACUSA." Which was smart, in her opinion. Though she couldn't remember if they functioned exactly as the Ministry of Magic did, or if there were great differences between the two.
