Welcome to your second duel!

This is a key stepping stone into determining your placement in the Jinx Tournament so please take this seriously. A list of spells to use can be found HERE while the cost of physical actions can be found below.

Please note that these actions take away from the Fatigue Points section. Also note that these are only taken into account if you're attacking or avoiding a spell. If you're simply moving around the hall, these points don't need to be considered.

OOC: This duel must be completed by the 15th of March by 11:59pm GMT. You're required to make a minimum of 3 posts each in that time.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate in contacting me about them or posting them in the Dueling Club Rules thread. If you don't think you can post during that time or you don't think you can start/finish your duel, please let me know as soon as possible and we'll try and work something out.

Remember to keep a track of your points both in the title of your post (before any spells have been cast) and at the end of the post (after your charrie has cast a spell). Please refer to this post if you're confused as to how this works or, simply, come to me. Include as much information as you can about the spell in the spoiler section at the bottom of your post, including the directionality of the spell.

Also remember to be as realistic as possible with your charrie's age and ability.

First person mentioned in the thread title is the first person to start off the duel.

DEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRFFFFFFFFF!

Even with all of EVERYTHING that was going on, even with Abey's own personal issues with classes and then the whole big school PANIC thingy, even with all of that, Abey was still SO excited to duel. In fact actually it all made him even more motivated, rather than put him off, because 1. duelling was NOT a theory lesson or even a lesson at all, so he wasn't nervous about it in the slightest, and 2. it seemed actually like IMPROVING his duelling skills was exactly what he needed to do really actually. Just in case.

And best of all? He got to duel DERF! His VILLAIN! Dreams did come true.

When it was time to duel, Abey bounded forwards into the duelling area, giving Derf the biggest grin of his life. Then, just like last time, he did a BIG DRAMATIC BOW literally actually just because he liked the idea of bowing before a duel - apparently it was something to do with 'shivery' which was actually also a Gryffindor trait (but did NOT mean he belonged there, just by the way). THEN, without skipping a beat, he raised his wand and cast the quickest Bluebell Flames spell in his LIFE.

Except that there was a veeeeeeery slight chance, though, that because he had been trying to launch himself into action so quickly (because Abey), that his flames - while, yes, did appear - weren't as RAH and WOO as he would have liked. Probably because it was conjuration and Abey KNEW that conjuring things was supposed to be difficult anyway, and also EXTRA difficult in duels. But it was still just a little bit disappointing for his first spell in this duel to be so weak.

SO - and here he was drawing on experience with his last duel and how much of a pain in the neck it had been to be under the effects of THIS spell - Abey used up a few valuable seconds to put all his focus into a Jelly-Fingers Curse, and sent it hopefully in Derf's exact literal actual direction.

And then he bounced on the spot in his excitement, apparently forgetting how tired duelling made him last time and that he should probably conserve his energy.

ABEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY!

Derf could hardly contain his excitement as he skipped and stumbled and sprinted from his common room to the dueling arena with his wand ALREADY clenched in his hand. Thoughts of winning and losing were no where near the Hufflepuff's mind, he was just excited and eager to be dueling with one of his BEST friends because it was going to be SO much fun! It was ALMOST a dream come true. It would be MORE of a dream come true if they were in the SAME house.

But they weren't. And the curfew and other icky and stressful things that were happening at Hogwarts made that fact really REALLY sad. But it was okay because he had a PLAN that he would share with Abey after their duel. As long as they were in the same room they were in a common room after all soooooooo really it was the perfect plan. Just needed to lug their mattresses out of their rooms and to an empty classroom.

Hopping up on the platform, Derf returned the bow with just as much enthusiasm and had only JUST gotten into position when Abey's first spell came his way.

"WOOOOOOOOOW! You can do conjura----" HOLY FLAMING SALAMANDERS! ONLY NO...NOT SALAMANDERS! HIS TROUSERS! HIS TROUSERS WERE ON FIRE! AND HE WASN'T EVEN A LIAR! It took Derf a few moments of hopping up and down along with some arm flailing before he remembered the simple matter of stop-drop-and-roll to put out his uniform trousers...and thank MERLIN he had because any further up and, well, there may have been more than just his fwooper boxers showing.

But but...Derf had just been in the middle of PRAISING Abey for performing some conjuration because that was REALLY neat.

Thankfully, although unintentionally, Derf's rolling to put out the flames had caused him to dodge Abey's second spell.

Fire out, but still SUPER proud of his friend, Derf hopped to his feet and flourished his wand to start off his own casting with his own personal favorite and go-to at the beginning of duels...Slug-Vomiting Charm!

OH OH OH AND ONE MORE BECAUSE ABEY HAD SO MUCH ENERGY!

Okay.

Look.

Listen.

Look.

It wasn't that Abey was laughing at Derf's trousers being set on fire necessarily, it was more that he was laughing at Derf's reaction. And it wasn't really a LAUGH either, but more of a good-natured giggle. AND it was more because of the excited and nervous ENERGY that he was feeling, and not meanness. After all, Derf was his friend, see? AND by the time said friend was ready to continue, Abey had moved onto to just grinning at him. WITH him.

Duelling was FUN, wasn't it?

Except... oh. Um. Uh-oh. It wouldn't be fun if he was upchucking slugs everywhere, would it? No no nooooooooo, Abey was SURE to duck out of the way of THAT spell (ew) (slugs in his mouth) (no), but then sprang back up again with a BOUNCE.

..... Only to then end up getting hit with the second spell. Whoops.

It went without saying that Abey's legs started to dance and twitch uncontrollably. Went without saying because it was QUITE OBVIOUS ACTUALLY to anyone watching.

"VILLAAAAAIIIIIIIIN!"

That wasn't a spell. No, that was a message especially for Derf (he'd know what it meant), because for a moment it was all Abey COULD do. He certainly couldn't focus on a spell while he was getting used to his FLAILING LEGS, but yelling at Derf was fun and familiar, so he went with that.

Oh, Merlin. And the worst part? Abey still hadn't mastered undoing this sort of spell (HE had focused more on the OFFENSIVE SPELLS, which... well, which was starting to prove slightly foolish), and didn't want to waste his time attempting a spell that likely wouldn't even work, so he'd probably be stuck doing this weird (and tiring) JIG until the end of the duel. THIS was valuable time he could spend getting back at Derf, after all. And Abey just HAPPENED to be feeling extra devious now. Hehehehe.

Raising his wand, and sort of struggling for half a second (NO TIME TO WASTE) to make sure his aim was right, what with being jolted every which way, Abey cast a quick and easy Trip Jinx in Derf's direction, and then quickly followed it up with a- "Periculum!" Have some RED SPARKS, TOO. Ahem. "Sorry, Derf!"

Sorry because the main idea was for the sparks to make Derf stumble back into the trip jinx and then DOUBLE FALL, which was kiiiiiind of mean but also perfectly within the rules of a duel. Also, a long shot; Abey was perfectly fine with ANY spell working at this point, given his - ahhh... - predicament.

Now, with Derf (THE VILLAIN) hopefully preoccupied for a moment, Abey tried to make at least a little bit of sense out of what on earth his legs were trying to do. He even actually tried to force them to stop dancing, but they weren't kidding when they defined that spell. His feet really WERE out of control. Merlin.

OKAY...but like...like....NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

WHY was his bread and peanut butter spell for dueling NEVER hitting?! Did he need NOT to start off with it? Throw it into the mix later? He just really wanted to see some one throw up slugs and who better to be his first than Abey?!

The Hufflepuff's disappointment did not last TOO long as the Gryffindor soon lost control of his legs - and was surprisingly limber! He was pretty focused on Abey's legs - they were just moving SO much, you know? - and a thought crossed his young eager mind. WHAT would it look like if Tarantallegra got crossed with a Jelly-Legs Curse? He was just going to HAVE to find out!

Which meant that he was skipping an all important step in this duel. You know, the part where he was meant to defend himself against any incoming spells cast by his opponent.

Oops.

First to strike was Trip Jinx, causing Derf a whole lot more than a stutter step. Cross eyed and disoriented, the Hufflepuff walked right into Abey's follow up spell. Red sparks licked at his robes, singeing them causing bits of fabric here and there to smoke. "Sorry my right foot!" he laughed. It was silly to apologize for something you were doing on purpose, yeah?

But hold on here. First his trousers and then his robes! If Derf were not so keen on turning the Gryffindor's legs to jelly...he would think that Abey was opposed to clothes.

"Locomotor Wibbly!" he shouted, flourishing his wand a little TOO eagerly at Abey's dancing legs while quickly followed this up with Purple Firecrackers. Two could play the sparkly game!

Okay, but no, ABEY REALLY WAS ACTUALLY SORRY THOUGH. Sorry to Derf AND to his his right foot and even to his LEFT foot actually. Kind of, anyway. Because DUELLING. Duelling made it slightly more better to be a little devious and drop the Gryffindor shivery for juuuust a few minutes.

... You know, there was a great big whole actual reason that Abey called Derf his villain, and it mostly was to do with all the villainous things Derf did. For instance, the snowball fight they had had in class, or NOW, with his DANCING LEGS.

Soon to be DANCING JELLY LEGS.

There was no way he had the agility required to dodge anymore actually, and he was FAR too tired already to try and force himself to move WITH the spell either. Silently he cursed the fact that he did not yet know how to undo duelling spells spells - or, better yet, block them - and just braced himself to be hit by Derf's spell.

DID NOT LIKE. NOPE. NOT ONE BIT.

It turned out that jelly legs AND the dancing spell thingy was HORRIBLE. A HORRIBLE COMBINATION. A COMPLETE BETRAYAL.

With that spell in effect, Abey's legs could no longer support him, and immediately collapsed under his weight. BUT they still danced, or rather... well, Abey supposed it was more like flailing. He looked like some sort of enthusiastic octopus except not at all because he only had two legs. BUT THEY WERE FLAILING LIKE TENTACLES IN WATER. Or like he thought tentacles might flail. In fact, it was so mesmerising and also really weird and actually he could still FEEL his legs while they moved like that and it was weird. SO WEIRD. He... wasn't very sure he liked it actually, seeing his legs like that, it was like they-

"AHHHHHH!"

LUCKILY (or... maybe unluckily given the whole DUEL thing) Abey couldn't dwell on that for too much longer, because DERF had STRUCK AGAIN. The purple firecrackers were nothing short of alarming, especially when Abey hadn't been expecting them, and he felt his heart go SO SO SO SO SO SO SO FAST IN HIS SURPRISE. He tried to hit and punch them away, like they were quaffles, but they had already got him good. Was his hair okay? WAS HIS FACE OKAY? "How could youuuuuuuuu??!?!?!?!!?" he wailed, quite dramatically too, reeeeeeally playing it up. Did Derf feel bad yet? DID HE?

On the floor, legs flailing, chest heaving his fast breathing as he tried to collect himself, Abey blinked hard and tried to quickly assess the situation. Clearly, he was on the back foot here, at a huuuuuuuuge disadvantage actually, so he had to be QUICK QUICK QUICK and also kind of clever if he wanted to get Derf back.

And he did. Because it was fUN.

Just a shame Abey wasn't all that clever.

Raising his wand, he sent back the first spell that came to mind. "Micans!" Just a simple Sparking Spell, which was all he could think of for the moment, what with all the FLASHES AND BANGS they were sending at each other. Abey used THAT spell as a distraction (his favourite duelling method already) and to buy him some time to think and to steady himself what with his flailing jelly legs quickly wearing him out, and then threw in his payback spell.

"Locomotor Mortis!"

Legs for legs? Yesssssss.

..............

... There... would be hugs later, after this duel, right? Right. Because friends.

OH NO! OH NO OH NO OH NOOOOOO!

GRYFFINDOR DOWN! And as much as he was pleased his spell had hit and he as able to see the results of his previous wonderings...he did not really like seeing his friend flopping around like a fish on the deck of a ship. WHAT IF HE FLIPPED AND FLOPPED IN A WAY AND BROKE SOMETHING?! Flourishing his wand instantly, Derf stammered through casting Spongify on the floor under and around Abey. THERE! Now he could flaily about and it would be like bouncing on jelly!

AND YES HE DID FEEL BAD, OKAY?!

"FORGIVE MEEEEE?!" he pleaded...just as Abey's first spell struck and the Hufflepuff completely defenseless against it. Legs tangling up in his robes a bit as he stumbled about trying to avoid some of the sparks as best he could, some of the tiny little flames licked at his exposed legs because SOMEONE'S bluebell flames had BURNED his trousers off.

Since his wand was at the ready and he was actually actively LOOKING in the direction of Abey, Derf was able to see the Gryffindor's next movements and threw up a Shield Charm just in time. He had been WORKING on that one especially after his duel with Kane and how embarrassing and disheartening it had been in Defense Against the Dark Arts not to be able to perform it even ONCE to be able to play it what had looked like a really neat game. THERE HAD BEEN MANY A SLEEPLESS NIGHT BECAUSE OF HIS HUFFLEPUFF BROKEN HEART OVER IT, OKAY?!

Seeing the spell bounce off his charm and back at Abey - SORRY! But hey, if it hit then his legs would stop flailing about so that was actually something NICE he had just done, you know? - the first year sent some Green Sparks in his friend's direction for some added fun. Since, you know, they both seemed to be on a kick of flashy things like that. It felt wrong breaking the tradition now.

Um, HUFFLEPUFF down, actually really. Meaning, not Derf, but Abey. WHO WAS A HUFFLEPUFF OKAY. Sort of.

Not that Abey was a Legilimens or anything, so actually he could read any thoughts and didn't know to be indignant about being considered a Gryffindor by his ONE AND ONLY VILLAIN. Not about that anyway.

BUT.

THERE WAS SOMETHING ELSE.

FIRST off, Derf's Shield Charm went up, and Abey could do nothing but GAWK. No blocking, no dodging; his legs were still flailing in ALL KINDS OF DIRECTIONS but actually he had noticed actually that since Derf's Spongify spell the only real pain he felt was through the over-use of his leg muscles, because the floor was now nice and spongy and not painful to collide with at all, and in fact actually Abey found himself bouncing lightly up and down with the momentum.

BUT.

BACK TO THE DUEL.

Abey did nothing as his own spell came right back his way, nothing but brace for it, because actually he had the same thought as Derf. Legs locked into place? PLEASE.

As soon as the spell made contact, Abey's legs snapped tightly together and stopped dancing so wildly. Curiously enough it still FELT like they were trying to dance, actually; it was strange, like there was so much ENERGY running through his LEGGIES and he couldn't move to expend it. Um. Um. Um. This wasn't a fun feeling.

BUT.

THERE WAS SOMETHING ELSE OF NOTE.

"What?!" Abey finally yelped in shock in Derf's direction, just in time to be assaulted by a bunch of green sparks. He squirmed and batted them away as they got all up in his face, then paused the actual duel to look at Derf, a mix of awe and something like disappointment on his face. "You can shield?" Unfaaaaiiiiiirrrrrrrr. Abey had been trying to master that siNCE HE WAS BORN. Or, like, for a few months, maybe. Weeks, perhaps. So, you know, there was only one thing for it now. "You have to teach me, and you're not allowed to say no! Cause we're friends!" Big GRIN. Also, very smoothly, as though it was a continuation of all of everything else that he was saying and in the same tone and everything, Abey added in the incantation and wand movement for Purple Firecrackers. Yes, it had been done already a MILLION times in this duel, BUT THEY WERE PRETTY AND ABEY LIKED HAVING THE EXCUSE TO LOOK AT THEM AND THEY WENT SO WELL WITH GREEN SPARKS, OKAY?

Also, they were perhaps the first thing that Abey could think of sending back at Derfael right as he remembered they were still mid-duel.

ALSO, he would definitely thank his villain for the whole spongy floor thing later, after this duel, because Abey appreciated it. Maybe they could both go to the kitchens after this and get some hot chocolate or something. He maybe fantasised about re-energising himself with hot chocolate and biscuits as he sorta half-heartedly bounced himself little where he sat on his soft area of floor, trying to expend alllllllll that weird-wrong-and-not-even-his energy that was building up. Being forced to stay sat on the floor was NOT helping. How could his legs be so awake but the rest of him be so tired?

The award for the most energetic, most dramatic and, no doubt, cutest duel went to this pair. Just seeing the two duelling brought a smile to the man's face. That level of enthusiasm was to be admired, really, and he hoped that it was something that the two boys would keep forever. Don't let puberty take it away, okay?

Right. Duel.

Which he couldn't concentrate on because it was at that moment that his ears picked up on something that only confused him. Villain?! Weren't these two meant to be friends? Or was he just not meant to question this?

Probably the latter.

The nicknames and any trash talk was quickly cast aside and he focused on the spells themselves. First year spells, more or less, but the way they were being used was interesting. Take Spongify, for example. Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne could've kept Mr Botros hopping mad - see what we did there? - but instead, he was making the Gryffindor's job easier. Nice, wasn't it? Very nice.

It was a shame that the duel had to come to a close all too soon. The man glanced down at his watch, just to make sure, before striking up a shield between the two boys. He stepped out from his hiding spot and gave his wand a flick. Immediately, all spells that had still been in effect were gone. You're welcome. "Excellent! Really excellent, both of you," Could they tell that he was pleased? Maybe the smile on his face would do the trick. "I'm very pleased with the level of energy present. That's only going to help you, believe me. As it stands, this has been a very close duel but you, Mr Ashburry-Hawthorne, have taken the lead. Congratulations! And well done, Mr Botros."

And yes, he fully supported the idea of peer-teaching.
