First duel of the year! Kitty was equally excited as she was nervous. On the one hand, she had come to enjoy dueling and was happy for the chance to get back in after being too busy to join last year. On the other hand, it had been more than a full year since she'd dueled and she was pretty certain she was going to lose this one.
Today she was wearing plastic spiders in her hair and extremely pale makeup to complete the Gothic look. Spiders were not her usual style, but it was for effect.
"Good morning Charlotte," Kitty greeted her opponent with a small smile. "I promise to not cast anything painful." Haha. With another smile, she bowed and said, "Well good luck!" Then she strided to the other end of the arena and held out her wand.
"Silencio!"

Oh it felt GOOD to be back in the dueling arena! Even if she had spent a whole lot of her summer dueling with the British Youth Dueling Association, and being challenged and developing herself and really having to stretch herself, there was something about dueling here at Hogwarts that Charlotte just loved.
"Hi Kitty!" She greeted cheerfully. "I like the spiders."
This Gryffindor wasn't going to make any promises about what she would or wouldn't cast - you never really knew what a duel would bring, or how things would go.
As soon as they had started, after paces, bowing, and saluting, Char cast her now signature spell on herself. Featherlight. She was limber enough to begin with, but speed and dexterity and quickness on her feet had always been her strong point, so she would obviously continue playing to her strengths. And then Kitty was on the attack!
Char conjured a shield, protego, to defend against the attack, but rather than try send it back, she flicked it away and cast an attack of her own, a one-two of Bluebell flames and Purple Firecrackers. A colourful beginning right?!

"Thank you!" said Kitty cheerfully as Charlotte complimented her spiders. They didn't have time to continue the conversation, as the match was just starting, but if they had continued Kitty would have complimented Charlotte's hair in return.
And spells were flying! She watched as Charlotte cast the featherlight charm on herself, from other matches Kitty could tell that this seemed to be her favorite spell. Then she watched as she blocked her silencio and sent it flying harmlessly in another direction, right before casting...
"Oh, Merlin's beard no - PROTEGO!!!" her block came up just barely in time, causing the flames to burn harmlessly into a wall. Kitty couldn't believe how close that had been, but before she could even plan her counter attack, she was hit full on by an onslaught of purple firecrackers. "GAAAA!!!" she screamed, and she threw up her arms to cover her face. Two of the spiders fell out of her hair and clattered to the ground.
Kitty stood to her full height when the spell wore off, and forced a smile. "Nice spell there. LANGLOCK!" Then she followed it up with the spell she'd just learned: Orbis.

It had been lucky that her firecrackers spell had got her, really, but Charlotte wasn't about to get cocky about it, that was when mistakes were made. Char noticed the plastic spiders fall to the ground, but she wasn't going to let them distract her, not against an opponent like Kitty!
Instead she cast an anti-jinx on herself, and kept bouncing from foot to foot as the spells -strong spells! Gosh, Kitty! - were sent at her and deflected by the anti-jinx. She had some new stuff too, but Char wasn't ready to unleash all that yet, instead she went with a quick pow-pow-one-and-two of Cantis and a trip jinx.
She could tell already this duel was going to be fun, because a challenge! That was the BEST kind of fun. Charlotte had a lot of energy right now, and she was ready for more.

Chalotte was a pretty good dueler, Kitty thought admiringly as she watched her avoid both her spells. After this match was over, she was going to ask her for advice on dueling.
"CANTIS?!" She sidestepped out of the way just in the nick of time. Cantis was HER favorite spell, in fact that's the one she'd been planning to use next. Every duel that she could remember participating in involved her firing Cantis at someone at least once. One time she'd even tried to jinx Charlotte with that spell.
"Nice try -" she began, just before being tripped by the trip jinx. "Oof!"
Quickly springing up before she could be hit with anything else, she shouted, "Cantis!" followed by the leg clocker curse.

Yup. Cantis. Char knew that was a favourite of the Ravenclaw girl's, it had been used on purpose for that reason, an attempt to throw her, which apparently had been successful with the second part of that duo of spells!
Her wand was up with a protego shield to block and bounce back the Cantis spell that Kitty sent at her, but as fast as Char was on her feet though, Kitty sure managed to figure out exactly where Charlotte would be, and the leglocker hit her. Charlotte fell back, landing on her behind but keeping a hold of her wand. She cast Ventus, quickly at Kitty from the ground, and then Finite on the leglocker. Charlotte bounced back up and flicked a quick little ears-to-kumquats spell at Kitty too.

Since last time Char had deflected a spell in another direction, she'd assumed she'd do the same this time - and when she realized differently it was already too late. Cantis hit her full on the face! "Na na na na na na na!" So THIS was what Cantis felt like in a duel! Kitty felt like singing - and anything would do. But she knew she was in a duel, so she forced her muse to shut up before she started singing an epic love song to Tenacius. Instead she just sang the words, "Na na na na na na!" in a slightly shrill tone, sidestepping out of the way of Ventus and that weird spell that would transform her ears. "La la la!" she sang for a little diversity, before pointing her wand at her throat and shouting in a sing-song voice, "Na na na - FINITE!"
Blushing from sheer embarrassment and panting from exhaustion, Kitty pointed her wobbly wand at Char and sent a trip jinx at her and with the last burst of her energy, a Tarantalegra.
"Take that!"

There wasn't even a second to breathe and relax or anything and Char liked it that way. She was almost euphoric about it. This was what she lived for! This was what she loved so much about dueling! The trip jinx hit Char - but she still had the anti-jinx in place, which stopped it even if it also fizzled out and no longer remained to protect her from jinxes. This was exhausting. She'd been hit by so many spells already. More than once was already one too many, but Kitty was a tough opponent.
Char bounded forward, grunting slightly with the effort as her wand swooping into a shield spell, the Tarantallegra bouncing back towards Kitty. Char followed up with a Rictusempra.
"You take that!"

This duel was the most intense duel she'd ever been in, and that included the time her knee twisted when fighting Olivia! Spells were flying left and right, and though she was sure she was losing (and was still kind of embarrassed by her singing), she couldn't deny that this was fun. :O
"Protego!" she shouted, sending her own spell which Char had already protegoed right back at her. By now she wondering if the spell was so weakened that it wouldn't have much of an affect by the time it actually hit. Then she was hit by Rictusempra. "GAA!" She doubled over laughing as invisible hands (or feathers) tickled her all over. She clutched her stomach in a futile attempt to block the tickling, tears running from her eyes in laughter as she doubled over on the floor.
"And no it's YOUR turn again!" she shouted, aiming her wand at Char. "Rictusempra!"

Even as Kitty was doubled over being tickled, Char's legs were dancing like crazy as the double-returned tarantallegra hit her. But it started to peter out only moments later, the spell clearly weakened from all the rebounding, enough that she could keep fighting. Char threw up a shield, not to rebound but to simply block, and then, spying the plastic spiders on the ground from earlier, "Wingardium Leviosa!" She levitated first one, and then the second one, sending them as projectiles at Kitty.
Plastic spider attack!

What was Kitty wearing? Was that....... spiders? For fashion or duelling purposes?
Hirsch had questions.
He voiced none of them, however, and simply brushed it off as the Ravenclaw's style. It didn't seem like Charlotte would be put off by them, especially given her response. Besides, he had more important things to concentrate on: this duel. Spells were being thrown back and forth and, to no one's surprise, Charlotte had cast her signature spell. At this point, the man would've considered there to be something wrong with the girl if she didn't cast that spell before a duel.
What he liked was that Kitty seemed to be putting the Gryffindor through her paces in this duel. There was no easy road being taken here, not with the pace of the spells being thrown. Should he pair the two up more often, then? If they both provided a nice challenge against each other, then surely, it wouldn't be bad to-
Right. Duel.
He glanced down at his watch every now and then before striking up the shield. Duel time was over, ladies. Sorry. "Excellent! Both of you!" Yes, he was here. "I think the two of you gave each other an interesting challenge so I hope it has proved to be beneficial to both of you." Because that was important too. "Congratulations, Charlotte, for winning this duel. And a very well done for putting up an excellent fight, Kitty."
If they didn't have anything else to say, they were free to go and relax.
