Ravenclaw The Ravenclaw Nest

Once you've solved the bronze knocker's riddle, you enter a circular, comfortable looking common room. The common room always has a well-lit and airy look about it, mostly due to the fact that the arched windows that are covering a large section of the walls, stretch from the floor and all the way up to the domed ceiling. The ceiling reflects the midnight blue carpet that's dotted with stars and spreads across the common room. Look closely and you might notice one or two of these stars twinkling at you, especially during the darker hours.

Everything from the walnut furniture to the blue and bronze silks that drape over the windows seem to scream Ravenclaw. Take a look outside of the window and you'll find yourself facing the most magnificent view that Hogwarts has to offer: the grounds stretch out as far as the eye can see, with the lake, Herbology greenhouses and Quidditch pitch meeting your eye. Meeting the lake is the Forbidden Forest itself and beyond the forest lies an excellent view of the surrounding mountains. Near the windows are blue window seats, large enough for two or three people to sit on.

Dotted around the common room are various objects you'd often find in your everyday common room. Soft chairs, armchairs and sofas are dotted here and there, some accompanied by a table or two. The softest of these pieces of seating furniture can be found near the fireplace on one side of the common room. The most notable and unique object that stands here is the statue of Rowena Ravenclaw who's standing between the two staircases leading up to the dormitories.

So come in and make yourselves comfortable while you're at it. This is your home, after all.

Jasper had tuned out at some point, walking around the castle. Studying probably would've been a good idea, but he hadn't exactly... wanted to. Not right now at least. Maybe in fifth year before OWLs?

NEWTs was early enough wasn't it?

Clearly, he was not meant to be a Ravenclaw, Jasper decided. Though the sorting hat had put him here and now he was here. Besides, he actually preferred this house, he thought as he looked around the common room. The blue was quite nice to look at, he'd imagine red and yellow would get frustrating after some time.

Sitting himself down on one of the blue sofas in the room, he pulled a sketch book out of his bag, a pencil finding its way to the paper seeming to have a life of it's own.

After answering the riddle in a lazy fashion, Jace emerged from the entrance into the Common Room with his head down, and slumped shoulders. He'd been practising Kendo everyday, and it became evident that he's overworked by it. Sighing, he trudged the length of the common room, passed by a few blue chairs...and was about to enter the dormitories when...

"Homework?!" Jace's eyes grew big as saucers as he hastily made his way towards Jasper. "Did I miss anything from my list?" Panic slowly graced his young face as he stared at the boy's sketchbook. Did any of the subjects required them to draw something? Had he spaced out during one of the lessons and forgot to jot down homework notes?

Jace looked at the sketchpad, to Jasper...and then back at the sketchpad again. Merlin. Had he focused too much on Kendo this time around? His mama wouldn't be so happy about that.

Somehow he had gotten so absorbed in his sketching even though he wasn't aware of what he was drawing that he hadn't even noticed that someone else had entered the common room. The green eyes only jolted away from the sketchbook when he heard someone frantically asking him a question, eyes flicking up towards Jace.

Well at least he knew the person who had interrupted his drawing.

Had he forgotten something on the list? Jasper was confused for a second, tilting his head to the side before he realised exactly what was happening. Grinning at the other boy he shook his head, before looking back down at his sketch.

A pair of eyes stared up at him, and he knew exactly who they belonged to, even if these were in black and white rather than the actual purple colour that so distinctly belonged to their owner.

"I'm just relaxing a bit," Jazz explained, before his eyes travelled back up to the Japanese boy in front of him. "You alright Jace? You look knackered..." he paused for a moment, unsure if that was also a part of British slang. Just in case... "Uh... tired."

He was…relaxing? Jace somehow didn’t buy the information seeing that he’s talking to a fellow Ravenclaw. Who knows? Maybe doing homework was a form of relaxation, right? It took Jace a few moments to register that what Jasper was doing is not school related. This half-Japanese kid ought to chill.

“Oh…okay. G-gommenasai, Jasper-san.” He said bowing politely to the other boy sat on the chair. “S-sorry.” He said in English this time, giving him a sheepish smile and a good ruffling of his own hair.

And…knackered what?

His father may be British, but he isn’t accustomed to British English short language yet. “Knackered…” he repeated Jasper’s word and turned scarlet red when the other boy supplied its meaning for him. “Tired…yes! Tired.” He said nodding and sat on the floor, stretching his legs out and gave a long sigh. “I just got back from the Room of Requirements. I was practicing for my Kendo promotion.” It’s a long way to go, but Jace was determined to perfect his moves until next summer.

“What are you drawing?” he said curiously.

Why was he apologising? Jasper was a little confused especially because of the use of Japanese, tilting his head to the side as he looked at the other Ravenclaw. Still he gave Jace a smile, nodding slightly in response "No worries."

He didn't know why Jace had bowed, but he figured that was a cultural thing. Maybe the apology was also more cultural? Who knew?

Jasper flushed red as well, seeing how the other boy didn't understand him. One of his hands went to run through the slightly curly brown hair, offering a sheepish smile to the Japanese boy in front of him. "Sorry..." he really needed to pick up British slang, though Jasper did have an excuse. He'd spent his last year back in Australia, meaning he was certain both his accent and slang use had picked up again.

"Kendo?" Jasper blankly looked at Jace, wracking his brain. It sounded familiar. "That's the thing with the long wooden sticks, yeah?

He cringed. That sounded very... well... dumb. Hopefully Jace would understand.

When Jace redirected the attention to Jasper's sketchbook, the boy fought a blush that threatened to rise on his cheeks. "Uh... it's just... I don't know yet..." it was a lame attempt at a lie, his right hand moving to scratch the back of his head yet.

He handed the sketchbook over, figuring that the eyes wouldn't give themselves away yet.

Jasper was grateful that he hadn't gotten further in the sketch yet though, otherwise there were no doubts that Jace would've recognised the figure that was the subject of the sketch.

Jace let out a short chuckle realizing that somehow, him and Jasper are alike. The unnecessary apologising was a given and instantly, Jace felt at home around him. “It’s funny how we both came from different countries, and here we are...confusing each other with our own dialect. We’d probably apologise to each other the whole day.” He said leaning back on the floor with his hands and wiggled his bare toes.

At the mention of the word Kendo, Jace perked up as he picked up his equipment bag and showed two kinds of wooden swords to Jasper. “Yes it is. We use the ‘bokken’ to practice our forms...” he trailed off showing his solid wooden sword, “And the ‘shinai’ when we spar. It’s made of bamboo slats tied together.” He said rather proudly. “Here take a good look at it.” He added offering the shinai to him.

While Jasper was busy looking at his equipment, Jace picked up the sketchbook and wondered who he was trying to draw. “A portrait? Of whom...if I may ask?” The drawing was still a tad elusive to pinpoint who it was...but the shape seemed oddly familiar to him. Realizing who it could be, Jace steered the conversation away from the potential topic. “So...what do you do for fun in Australia? Do you...have colourful festivals too?”

Jasper gave an amused smile at Jace's comment, nodding in agreement. "I think you're doing better than me, I come from an English-speaking country and still end up confusing everyone," he commented lightly, besides which English was also the only language he spoke. "I think Azura so far is the only one who has understood... or at least managed to guess everything I've meant."

Which was kinda depressing in a weird way.

There was one person in this castle that didn't really always understand what it was he was saying.

Jasper leaned forward, looking at the... he wasn't even going to try to remember actually. Instead he just listened to the explanation that Jace was giving him. And thankfully it was the one with sticks swords. Carefully he'd reached out and grabbed the one for sparring, running the green eyes over it and examining it. "So the more solid one is to practice without hurting anyone? Is that also because it'd be heavier? Or is this one heavier?"

This was a whole new world.

"I don't know," he responded quickly. Mentally he face palmed, knowing that he had responded much too quickly for that to be believable. But, he immediately switched to the new conversation topic the other Ravenclaw was offering.

Festivals in Australia?

Did Mardi gras count?

"Well... we've got New Years Eve... the fireworks are usually big enough to bring heaps of tourists to Australia..." he thought for a moment, before thinking about the times he'd been in some of the Asian communities. "Chinese New Year is pretty big too, and then you've got Vivid but that's less a festival and more just... a light show... he finished lamely.

He'd never really thought of Australia as boring before this, but thinking to 'Australia Day' and realising it was all about having a BBQ and swimming, which also happened on Christmas and Boxing day and New Years Eve basically everything when it was warmer than 25 degrees he realised that most of the culture really came from other immigrants.

"Japan has a few festivals though, don't they?" he was pretty sure he'd seen people celebrating random Japanese festivals in Australia before. Not that he knew anything about them.

Jace chuckled and ruffled his own head realizing how silly they actually were. “Well...I grew up learning two languages, although I’m more fluent in Japanese...I think?” the raven-haired boy shrugged, and grinned at the mention of Azura’s name. “She likes foreign languages. Did you know?” Remnants of their fourth floor balcony conversation came to mind. “I’m sure she enjoyed Australian short language too. It may well be a whole new language to us.” Right? The fact that they seem to talk in codes were downright entertaining and amusing.

Jace crossed his legs in front of him and nodded as Jasper made sound judgement with the use of the bokken and shinai. “That’s one of the reasons, yes. But we also use it to spar without armours. It’s to keep our focus on, and not blink an eye when we attack or get hit. Samurais were trained to be the bravest men to walk on Japanese soil.” Fascinating stuff, right? “Shinais are lighter, so we could do swifter attacks and to somehow mimic an actual katana...commonly known as the samurai sword.” Jace nodded enthusiastically and grinned at the other boy. “Do you play any sport? Quidditch?”

The somewhat snappy and quick reply from Jasper made Jace flinch a bit. Did he...say anything wrong? “Uhm...sorry. I shouldn’t have asked.” He said pushing the sketchbook back towards its owner.

The raven-haired boy nodded in understanding and realized that Australians don’t do festivals that much. Meanwhile in Japan, “We do have a lot of festivals. We call it ‘Matsuri’ in Japanese.” He said writing the Japanese characters in the air with his point finger. “Every city has their own unique festival, but we also celebrate big, nationwide ones like the Doll Festival, and the Hanami Matsuri. I’m sure you’ve heard of the Sakura? Cherry Blossom?” Jace was sure Jasper has heard of it...or at least has seen it in pictures. The Cherry Blossom Festival is famous all over the world! “I remember inviting Azura over to Japan at some point to view it. You should come with us! I’m sure my papa can arrange international side apparitions. He works for the International Cooperation back at the Ministry.” See? Jace and his dad have the right connections so it shouldn’t be that hard. Maybe their parents can go too? Jace’s parents would love to meet the adults as well.

"I'd love to be able to speak another language... but English confuses me enough," Jasper joked, an amused smile on his face. Considering it seemed he couldn't even speak English properly yet, maybe he'd work on that a bit first! "I remember that... I think when I met her the first thing she commented on was my accent..." he tilted his head to the side, trying to think of their first meeting.

The main thing he remembered was the clumsy girl knocking him over before he'd been amazed by the colour of her eyes. They were incredible.

Nodding, Jasper listened intently to Jace's explanation, managing to keep up with the explanation even if he wasn't going to remember the names of things. Then sport came up, particularly Quidditch. Jasper smiled sheepishly, "I don't like flying," in fact he was absolutely terrified of being on a broom. "I used to swim competitively though... and my sister and I both play cricket occasionally."

Cricket was a necessary part of Australian culture, whether you enjoyed it or not.

Guilt shot through him, noting how Jace had flinched. Between that and the further heat rushing to his cheeks at the subject of his drawing, he averted his eyes to the ground. Carefully accepting the sketchbook, he shook his head at Jace's apology. "No... no... sorry I just... yeah... I don't exactly know who it is yet and it's been bothering me, but I'll work it out when I get further into the drawing maybe. Probably. It's just I'm only at the eyes-" he finally shut his mouth noticing he was rambling out the lie too obviously. Jace was astute, he'd notice immediately.

"Yeah I know of the Cherry Blossom festival... I've seen a few photos of it as well," the others were unfamiliar to him. The idea of being able to go to Japan with Jace and Azura and see one of these festivals though, that sounded amazing. Grinning at the Japanese boy he nodded. "That'd be incredible!"

Though maybe he'd take a plane...

Planes were nice.

He didn’t know English could still be confusing to a native speaker! This made Jace sit straighter on the floor, showing much interest on the topic. “I don’t know if you know, but in Japan we have to learn our own language too. It would take me years to fully master it.” He said, trying to cheer up Jasper. He’s not alone with this stuff! “During the first grade, we learn to read and write the two 48-character Japanese Phonetic Letters in Hiragana and Katakana. We also learn how to read and write a few Chinese characters so we could use the Kanji writing system. After first grade, we expand our Chinese characters to 200...by the end of 9th Grade, we should have mastered all 2000 Chinese characters...and to be able to read and write in Katakana, Hiragana, and Kanji.” See? Japanese was harder. “That’s the requirement for us to attain basic literacy in Japan.” So technically, English isn’t so bad. “What foreign language would you like to master then?” Maybe...they can learn it together, yeah? Jace isn’t picky when it comes to learning new things.

The Ravenclaw simply watched the Australian boy and wondered if he ever thought of Azura as pretty? She is a very beautiful girl with a unique set of purple eyes. He did remember meeting her in Florian’s prior to their first year in Hogwarts. He met a very clumsy girl who fell on her face...and when he helped her get up, he was fixated with her eyes. He never thought he’d see a real version since he’d only seen a few in Japanese cartoons.

And then there was another boy who didn’t like flying! “I don’t do Quidditch. I used to hate flying, but my papa encouraged me to join a Quidditch Summer Camp three years ago...and...it isn’t so bad when you get to break the fear of it.” He’d flown and winged horse a couple of weeks ago during Professor Hernandez’s class and it was awesome! He’d choose flying horses over brooms though. “We’re expected to attend Flying Lessons in a few days. Will you be alright with it?” It was going to be their last year to take the basic lesson so he’s more than willing to finish it.

And...wait what? Cricket? They play with actual crickets?

Jace’s expression was a cross between shocked and curious. “How do you play with crickets? What’s the objective of the...game? Do you...hunt for bugs in rice fields?” Because they have a lot of those in Japan. Jasper is more than welcome to play there, just saying.

The Ravenclaw could sense the budding awkwardness in between them, and the raven-haired boy immediately assumed the seiza position and bowed his head towards Jasper. “Please don’t apologise! I was wrong for asking too many questions...I-I apologise for intruding your privacy.” Jace said, keeping his head down and forced himself not to listen to Jasper’s ramblings. He was wrong, and he ought not to know more.

He slowly looked up at the boy again when the Cherry Blossom Festival was mentioned. “Uhm...there will be a lot of food stalls too...and lots of people walking in their traditional clothing. It would be a treat for you guys.” He said relaxing in his sitting position and nodded at Jasper’s excitement. “I should owl my parents the soonest! They’d help us plan things out...and my dad would be the one to reach out to your parents formally. But...yeah, you should mention it first to them?”

Jacob looked around the common room he'd just entered. Eerily empty. Perhaps it was just as well. He wasn't really sure he was in the mood for conversation, anyway. He wasn't on top of his game, and it had taken him a good five minutes of standing in the hallway (or corridor, he supposed he should say now. When surrounded by Brits, do as the Brits do) like an idiot to figure out that darn riddle. That had only proved to worsen his already sour mood. He frowned to himself as he surveyed the room. The frown wasn't caused by the room; in fact, it was pretty nice in here. Good atmosphere. He knew studying would be easy in a place like this, and he could swear the stars on the carpet twinkled as soon as he looked away. No, the frown was birthed from the whole situation. Being forced to leave Ilvermorny and all his friends, abandoning everything he knew to move to a country that was across an entire ocean and where he didn't know anybody (and where ranch dressing was nowhere to be found), all because his father had gotten a new job? Really? He was at boarding school anyway. Why couldn't he have stayed and finished the year out, at least? What would the difference have been?

He weighed his options for a moment. He could go up to his dormitory -- he knew his things were already there -- but that would almost surely mean conversation with new roommates, and he wasn't quite ready for that. He could sit here alone, but then he would definitely look like a weirdo if anyone did happen to walk in -- a random stranger just sitting in the room. Maybe he should grab a book so it was less strange. Hmm. What to do...
