Default Library Bookshelves

The library is full of floor-to-ceiling bookcases. The deeper you journey, the more maze-like the library seems to become. If you find yourself lost, just pick up a nearby book and learn a new topic.

If you'd prefer not to be lost, however, the library bookshelves feature the occasional informational sign offering helpful directions to back to the front of the library as well as to guide you to popular topics further along.

There are small step stools and sliding ladders located throughout the shelves to help you retrieve books near the top of the bookcases. Feel free to use these. You may also use summoning spells to retrieve your books. Parked at the end of each aisle are small metal carts with a sign that says 'Place Books Here to be Reshelved.' Once a book is placed in the cart, it will find its way back to its homes on the shelves.

Above the carts are mirrors. These mirrors take advantage of an old lighting technique and you may notice that the library is brighter than it has ever been before. These mirrors serve a dual purpose for the librarian who uses them to take advantage of an old spying technique.

As always, please remember to be respectful to those around you, this is a library after all. Please also remember to respect school property at all times. The librarian may not be forgiving to anyone who threatens the serenity of her the library.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

This place was his personal heaven.

Mason had heard about the massive library at Hogwarts but now that he was actually here he could not help but smile in content. The library at Durmstrang had been big as well and he had spend most of his time there but it didn't compare to this.

Touching the spines of the books as he walked past the reference section, the Ravenclaw stopped as he saw a book about counter-curses that seemed to interest him and pulled it out. The book was big but not heavy so instead of walking to a table, the fifth year leaned with his back against the bookcase and flipped the book open on a random page.

Eheheheheh!

Two of the more adventurous (or perhaps dimwitted) or the pixies left the group and flew onto the fourth floor. They kicked at each other as they entered the quiet sanctuary (one smacking the other right in the face), knowing that they had found the perfect place for a bit of fun.

And finding their first victim was too easy. After quietly mumbling pixie gibberish to each other and pointing, they flew above the boy leaning against the shelf. Together they grabbed one of the books by its spine and watched as it fell, hopefully right on their victim's head.

"EHEHEHEHEHEHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

Unaware of the misschievious creatures that had just flown in to the library, Mason continued to read as he leaned against the bookshelf. He shifted his stance to be more comfortable as he flipped a page.

The book was interesting and after reading the first couple of pages, the fifth year decided to lend it. He closed it and turned around to find another book. Touching the spines of the books as he searched for one more, he suddenly heard a high pitched laugh from above him and as he looked up.

...........He saw a book falling down.

Right on his face. Not just the top of his head, but right on his face. His nose to be exact. "OWW!" The shout came out before he could stop himself and his eyes teared up as he grabbed his nose. "Who did th---" pixies.....

wait.....library...pixies....not good...

The two pixies roared with laughter when the book landed right on the boy's face. Encouraged by his reaction, they flew few feet away from each other and started pulling books off of the shelves, a few thrown at the boy's direction, and ripping out pages.

One of the pixies took one of the pages and pretended he was surfing. The other wadded up one of the pages it had ripped out and threw it at the surfing pixie, causing it to lose its balance and nearly fall onto the floor. It shot straight up into the air just before the collision with an annoyed look on its face.

Words were exchanged, and then large grins appeared on their faces. They dashed toward the sliding ladder. Together, they wobbled the ladder until it came off the rod and gravity did the rest of the work for them, causing it to fall in the direction where the boy was standing. Tiiiiiiiiiiimberrrrr!

Eheheheheh! This was so much fun!

The books....THE PRECIOUS BOOKS!

Mason's eyes went wide with shock as the realisation of what the pixies were doing with the BOOKS! hit him. Literally. He used his arms to protect himself when some of the books were thrown his way and when they stopped the Ravenclaw dared to look up.

One of the pixies floated in the air on a ripped off piece of paper and seeing that, the fifth year nearly had a panic attack. He could take a lot except for clowns and....destroyed books! "Nononono! Not the books! St--" he ducked as another book flew his way. "Stop it! Not the books, anything but the b----NOT THE LADDER EITHER!!!"

Thinking quick as the ladder was falling down in his direction right this moment, Mason took out his wand and shouted "Arresto Momemtum!" just in time.

Stepping aside quickly, he pointed his wand at the pixies next. But didn't do anything in fear of damaging the library even more.

Cynthia heard a commotion in the quiet sanctuary of her the library and came running toward the source of the noise.

"What in the world?" Books! Pages! What was this madness?!

Not immediately noticing the pixies, she went to go pick up one of the carelessly strewn about books and held it to her chest. You poor innocent book. Mama librarian was here. No need to fear.

A shocked human voice could be heard from the other side of the bookshelf Mason was standing. His eyes still on the pixies above him and his wand still pointed at them, the Ravenclaw dared to look away to try and see if he knew who it was.

He couldn't. To many books were in the way. The only thing he had to go on was a voice he did recognise but could not place. "Hello?! whoever is there!" he said loudly. "There are cornish pixies in the library. I'm trying to think of a way to get rid of them without damaging the books further..." cause that would be aweful even if they could magically repair them again.

One did not just hurt a book unless a book tried to hurt you.

Which was possible in this school...

The library was easily the place that Daxton spent the majority of his time, bar the Room of Requirement. The Room could provide Daxton with whatever books he needed, and that, coupled with the fact that it made a suitable hideout and place to sleep (he had not slept a night in the dormitories in his entire time at Hogwarts), meant that, at first, he had barely left it. But there was something about that place; the more time Daxton spent there, the more restless he would become. Even if he conjured up a completely new interior, he would always know that it was the same place, and it quickly became unpleasant.

During those times, Daxton usually found himself in the library. The smart thing would be to go where nobody else was likely to be, but nowhere else was he likely to find such an assortment of books. It hardly mattered that he had already sought out, read, and re-read every book in the library that he considered worth his attention, Daxton always had something he needed to work on, and that meant he always had a reason to be there.

He sat down at the end of one dimly lit aisle, a space as far away from other people as he could find. On his lap lay a book he had swiped from a seventh year; a seventh year he had watched obtain said book from the restricted section. The subject matter was interesting and disturbing enough that Daxton had been sat reading in the same place for hours, only moving to turning the pages of the book, occasionally flipping back to re-read some particularly interesting passages, all the while diverted some of his own disturbing trains of thought.

Sort of.

Not really.

Even though Henry had been fairly used to getting up early for some time now, it sometimes left him kind of tired after classes, especially if he didn't find something for himself to do and had gotten to bed late the night before. And though it often passed when he did feel that way as he'd get a second wind after a little rest in the common room, he couldn't quite shake that feeling today as he found himself walking through the library.

He had put off his History of Magic homework as long as possible until he had no choice but to finish it today. It only made it worse that he was already tired because History usually put him to sleep, or at the very least it wasn't a subject that kept his attention very long. But the library was probably the perfect place to go to finish it as it not only had the resources he needed but also was likely to be the least distracting place he could go to get the work done.

He was wandering through the aisles a bit, his mind on other things, as he searched for the book he needed. His tired state left him a bit unfocused though and his search became a little more aimless than anything else. Covering a yawn with his hand, he ventured down yet another aisle, his eyes searching the shelves as he kept in mind the name of the wizard whom he had selected for his essay. He hadn't even realized the figure seated at the end of the aisle until he had stepped within inches of him.

"Oh!" Startled slightly as the boy reached his peripheral vision, Henry quickly turned his head to see who was there and took a step back away from him at the same time. "Daxton..." he started, upon recognition, slightly curious about what the Ravenclaw was doing sitting in that particular spot. "Sorry, I didn't see you there. I guess I'm a little out of it today." And it wouldn't be like he'd be getting to bed early tonight either, not with this essay needing done.

One of the benefits of sitting on his own, in a secluded and quiet place, was that Daxton was very easily able to tell when someone was getting closer to him. As such, he had heard Henry Whittebrook's footfalls long before he had appeared in the aisle between the bookshelves, and simply as he moved closer and closer.

He had to wonder just when Henry would notice him, and found himself thinking that he had better notice sooner rather than later, because Daxton did not feel like intentionally calling attention to himself. It was... difficult... when you were not really the type of individual who made a great deal of noise.

Aside from anything else, Daxton could not help but privately note to himself how very easy it would be to attack the Whittebrook boy in that moment. Not that Daxton had any real reason to, or any real desire to; but Henry left himself very much undefended, and it would not be difficult to practice some sort of non-verbal offensive spell. Henry would be caught unawares and then the only difficulty would be to leave the scene unnoticed by anyone else. Daxton had no plans to try such a thing out - though the other boy was one of those that was a definite threat when it came to stealing certain people from him - but that did not stop him from vividly imagining the scenario, even as Henry moved closer and, ultimately, paid enough attention to see him sitting right there.

Paying no mind to his exclamations or apologies, Daxton eyed the other boy for a moment, probably looking more menacing than even he intended, given the low lighting and the bookshelves half hiding him in shadow. Eventually, Daxton shrugged, and took the turn of events as a cue for him to get to his feet again. He did so, and stretched out his back a little given how stiff it had gotten over the past few hours, before eyeing Henry once more. Seeing no books in his hands, he instead looked at the shelves as though to deduce exactly what the other boy was doing in here.

Unless... he had come here to look for Daxton all along. 'Didn't see you there'... 'A little out of it today'... Just how likely was that? Daxton shot a suspicious look his way.

Henry did not know Daxton all that well, most of that knowledge consisted of things told to him by friends or his own observations in class, but he didn't really expect him to speak back to him once he had acknowledged his presence. He never did know if there was a physical reason for that or otherwise, but it was also not something he had given much thought to, just accepting it for fact. And he was not at all surprised when the boy didn't do much more than shrug in response.

Quiet did not usually deter the fifteen year old, as he could often carry on a conversation himself with little contribution from another if need be. Though he did try to allow the other person to speak as it would be rude otherwise, he just had a lot to say and could fill in any silent gaps if they happened. "Are you doing some studying?" he asked, taking another step backwards out of his perceived personal space as Daxton rose to his feet. He glanced curiously at the book the other boy had, but he was unable to see the title. Maybe he was doing his History of Magic homework also.

He watched his year mate turn to look at the shelves and he turned his eyes that way also. “I’m trying to get my essay done for History of Magic,” he explained as his eyes searched the shelves for something relevant. “I decided to write it on Xavier Rastrick and theories on what happened to him.” Which at the time seemed somewhat interesting, but at this point it seemed like just a lot of work. Plus he had to write about his contributions to the wizarding world or some drivel like that, and that was kind of boring. Not to mention there didn’t seem like all that much information on the guy that really was interesting.

He glanced back at Daxton to see the other boy already looking at him. He wasn’t sure if he had said something wrong to make him look at him like that or if he was just seeing things. Maybe it was his fatigue or a trick of the dim lighting or maybe it was that nagging thought at the back of his mind, but he did his best to clear himself of it, preferring to give people the benefit of the doubt until they proved him otherwise. “Anyway,” he added, giving him a small, tentative smile. “You didn’t happen to notice a book or anything that might have information about him, did you?” Likely a slim chance, but he might as well ask since they were there.

Is there something wrong with me? That was the question Bella was asking herself as of lately. This was her third year and she still had little to no friends. Yes, it was very saddening and she couldn't bring herself to talk to anyone. From the first day, it seemed like everyone already had their group of friends picked out which left Bella trying to find a place to fit in. She wasn't exactly a shy person, but she wouldn't just walk up and randomly talk to anyone. I bet when Lian and Nic was in school they had lots of friends. Bella thought, thinking about her two older brothers who were well out of school.

Bella signed, looking quite sad as she headed over to the bookshelves to find a few books to study. She felt like she was falling behind in her studies and needed to correct that. There was no way she would be able to face her parents if she got anything below exceed expectations for any class. So, she started looking for books on subjects she needed the most improvements. She wanted to work on Muggle Studies, but another book on a completely different subject caught her eyes. When she reached up to grab it she was too short to get it.

Perhaps the best type of people for Daxton to interact with - or, well, 'best' was a little too strong of a word... 'most suitable' was more fitting, and slightly less flattering - was the type that could hold up a conversation with mostly on their own. Of course, there were also those that could communicate with him, and also those who would just sit in silence with him. Aslan Evans, essentially. Char could be all three.

He gave another shrug in response, followed by a nod, and for just a moment he held up the book he himself had been looking through. Yes, studying... of a sort. Nothing on the fourth year curriculum, though, that was for sure.

Oh... so Henry was doing actual homework. Like, for a class. That was... interesting... and... well, no. No, it was not. Not interesting in the slightest, but entirely predictable. Hufflepuffs.

Daxton continued to stare at Henry, looking him up and down when Henry turned to look back at him, not wanting to accidentally look him in the eye.

He thought that, out of the two potential person-stealers, Henry was perhaps the more preferable one. But only just, and a good part of it was possibly because Daxton found Henry to be the more attractive of the two, even if he was so young.

It did not mean he liked either of them.

It took Daxton a moment to drag his thoughts away from Char and her potential boy...whatevers, and back to the 'discussion' at hand. Xavier Rastrick? He had read about the man. An over the top, far too exuberant, dramatic, and flamboyant entertainer, who essentially vanished into thin air? Plenty of similarities between him and a certain Astronomer-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, Daxton thought.

The point was, he had read about him, here and there. Not even on a stupid little chocolate frog card, either, as Daxton stayed well clear of the things. And, it just so happened, he remembered everything he read, and exactly where he had read it. To Henry's question, he gave a nod, and finally looked away from him, back towards the bookshelves. After a moment of side-stepping down the aisle, and scanning the bookshelves up and down, he reached up for a thick and heavy book on a shelf just barely within his reach, but high up enough for him to have to go up onto his tiptoes. He could have levitated it down, but Daxton was still perfecting his non-verbal spellwork, and preferred to keep it firmly to himself. For now.

Turning back to Henry, he held the book out to him: 'Exit Stage Left: A Comprehensive History of Wizarding Entertainers and the Fates That Befell Them'. Perhaps not the kind of book one might expect Daxton to read, but he was sort of interested in entertainment - mostly music and the like - and had actually been initially drawn to the book because of the potential for reading about some interesting and/or gruesome deaths. He had not been disappointed.
