A NEW opponent! Another new opponent even, given she'd dueled Henry for the first time so far in this competition. It was exciting to be facing different people, since she felt like she had already proven herself against other people in the past. She'd watched his first duel too, and been thoroughly impressed.
"Hi Owen!" Charlotte greeted the Hufflepuff boy cheerfully, bounced up and down and stretched a few times, and then, was READY. Was he? She went through the usual traditional bows and salutes and paces and then turned around and took up a stance to begin.
And begin she did, trying again with a combination that was still new to her and hadn't quite come together in her last duel, this time she switched the order up though.
"Fulgari!" She cast the binding spell at her friend, following it up immediately with purple firecrackers, and then casting the featherlight charm on herself. It was kind of interesting how so many other people had started using her go-to strategy too, really.

To be honest, when Owen learned that his next duel was going to be against Charlotte Kettleburn, he had a moment of weakness not wanting to show up. But then he remembered how he worked hard to practice on his dueling and knew that he just had to put personal feelings aside.
So he was here now, giving the blonde Gryffindor his usual side grin as he returned her greeting. "Hey Char." He watched her for a moment as he rolled his shoulders before doing the customary bows and whatnot too.
Then it was on!
And he was already on a bind! Damn, Charlotte moved fast. He just had to be faster. Quickly muttering finite while he wiggled, Owen dove to avoid his friend's onslaught of firecrackers. Henry told him about how relentless she was with her spell casting. Not one to waste time during a duel too even though he was still on the floor, the Hufflepuff promptly pointed his wand at his opponent and cast the homing spell (yes, thank you Mason), following it up with "Melofors!"

Wow! Impressive! Defending against the homing spell when it was coupled with something else wasn't easy, but Charlotte went for an outside the box approach, abandoning attempts at shielding and instead providing an intermediary to take the impact.
"Serpensortia!" The snake, conjured from her wand, met the onslaught head on, and instantly the snake's head was encased in a small, snake-head sized pumpkin. The snake seemed perplexed by this, to say the least, lifting its head up and swaying around on the ground between them. Charlotte ignored the snake and threw out another bombardment of purple firecrackers while Owen was still on the ground, followed by Jelly Fingers in an attempt to catch him whenever he got to his feet again. He was so powerful with his spells, but Char was fast and determined and she wasn't gonna stop moving!
And the snake? Still totally perplexed by its pumpkin encasement.

Still on the floor, Owen watched on as Charlotte managed to block two of his spells by conjuring a snake....now with a pumpkin head. As expected for someone as smart as her; she was a fast thinker. Owen even thought for a millisecond that maybe he should go back to crushing on her but quickly dismissed the idea 'coz of Henry reasons and they were in the middle of a duel, for Merlin's sake!
Not paying the pumpkin-headed snake any heed as he didn't think it would be able to do any damage to him with its current state, the Hufflepuff refocused and began to pull himself off the floor as his friend yet again fired her now trademark firecrackers at him. "Protego!" Owen countered, now kneeling and face scrunched up due to the firecrackers' bright and bang. The shielding charm was followed by another, as he attempted to deflect her Jelly Fingers curse back to her.
And no, he wasn't done. Standing back up, Owen cast one of his favorites. "Ventus Duo!" Sorry, Char, but the plan is to send you sailing against the wall at the very least.

The Jelly Fingers rebounded and got her with a funny stinging floppy feeling and Charlotte switched hands rather than try and finite it just yet. She was ambidextrous which was totally useful in times like this, even if she did have a preference for her left hand. She would deal with it soon, but for now, with her hair wooshing back, she ignored the funny feeling in that hand and defended, her teeth gritting at the impact of the ventus duo spell on her shield, and then the extra heft it took to send it flying back to her much bigger yearmate.
This she followed up with a curse that she had newly mastered, changing things up again so that she wasn't just following a regular pattern or strategy: the Babbling Curse. This was tough stuff!
And the snake? She ignored the poor little thing in its pumpkin head for now too.

Another protego allowed Owen to defend against his own spell that Charlotte deflected back. PHEW. This girl wasn't going down without a good fight! Well, Owen, was up for that challenge. Just as soon as he got the Babbling curse out of the way with another shield charm (this spell is quickly turning into his best friend in this duel). Remember that time he, Remy and Henry thought it was a fantastic idea to drink the night away with babbling beverages? Yeah, it didn't end that well, so this Hufflepuff wasn't going to let himself babble away again.
But WAIT...the badger had an idea. Maybe, just maybe, babbling away intentionally can be used to his own advantage. He hoped it was enough to keep Char distracted.
So he called out to his opponent. "Charlotte!" ... "I have something to confess!" ....."It's something I've kept secret for so long.".... "I know that you like Henry, but..."..... "Incarcerous!"

It wasn't so much Owen's chatter that slowed Char down and distracted her as much as it was general disappointment that one of her newest spells hadn't hit the mark, and had been so easily blocked. But that was how it was and that was why Char found she wasn't quite able to get out of the way of the ropes coming at her, in the end they ended up around one of her legs and she cast a quick diffindo on the ropes to free herself and then flicked her wand at Owen in a quick one two of rictusempra and the cornflake skin spell. He would probably be ready for it but she was changing thing up again, going with her strength, which was speed for sure.
"you were saying? Char yelled cheerfully after all that, once again hopping from foot to foot.

Did his talking distract her even in the slightest then? Owen watched as the blonde cut up the ropes with a spell and once again admired her for her fast thinking. It wasn't hard to easily defend himself against Char's tickling charm with yet another protego though. But Owen got mildly surprised that she was able to follow it up with the cornflake skin spell, which as the spell suggested, did cover his skin with cornflakes.
IT. DID. NOT. FEEL. NICE.
But they were still in the middle of their duel and Owen didn't mind walking around as a cornflake monster. It did hinder his movement a bit, but aside from that, he was good to go. And that's why he still continued on with his current strategy, stepping towards the Gryffindor. "Look, I know you like my buddy, but I just want you to know that..." Wait for it... "I like you, Charlotte Kettleburn." Merlin, Henry was going to hate him.
And as an afterthought, he flicked his wand directly at her.
"Colloshoo!"

Dancing aside from the first spell as she processed Owen's words, Charlotte yelled "Protego!" and blocked the second attack.
She could ask and find out for sure later, but for NOW Char decided that it HAD to be a RUSE. She could RUSE back though right?
"Too bad you didn't tell me earlier, I might've snogged you, you know!" She hollered flippantly. Which may have been true once upon a time actually, but there were already too many boys to deal with. This one wouldn't distract her! She wasn't some little kid to be distracted by such things anymore, and this was a DUEL!
Wanting to be unpredictable and catch Owen off guard, Char made use of the snake that she had conjured earlier that was still slithering around with a pumpkin on its head. "Diffindo!" She cast at the pumpkin first, slashing it so that it fell away from the snake, and then she followed that up with green sparks behind the snake, so that it would go the other way, towards Owen. DUN DUN DUN. SNAKE IS MAD YO.
... it probably wasn't poisonous or anything right?

WHAT. WHAAAAT. O___o She would've snogged him? Was that for real? Or was she adapting his own strategy now?
Do not fall for it, Montezor. It is all just a ploy. Charlotte Kettleburn actually considering snogging him? Not possible. Yes. That HAD to be it. Just a ploy and Owen wasn't going to let himself get distracted. He was even going to play along. That was his original idea, anyway. "Does it really matter? Snogging can still happen either way, don't you think?!" Owen yelled back.
And then gritted his teeth as he saw what she did with the snake. As it began to slither towards him, Owen ransacked his brain for any spells that could help him as he ran away from it. Think, think, think. There it was. One of the spells he'd been practicing last summer. Skidding to a halt, the badger pivoted on his feet and aimed his wand at the snake as he casted, "Depulso!"Effectively banishing the snake to probably somewhere in the tournament stands. He hoped it wouldn't bite anyone!
Not wasting any time whatsoever, he quickly turned his wand on his opponent, following up with another spell. "Expelliarmus!"

Naww bye bye snake! Charlotte almost waved at the poor thing. Imagine such a day as it had had: firstly it had suddenly and rudely begun its existence in the middle of a duel only to be hit with a spell that encased its head with a pumpkin, and then it had been freed by the pumpkin only to be frightened by sparks and then banished through the air!
Char was going to use this moment to see to her jelly fingered other hand. She cast finite even as she heard the first part of the incantation of the disarming charm, the long incantation that it was, and now, unjellified, Char tossed her wand up even as the expelliarmus hit her, and snatched it with her original hand. The spell stung a bit when it hit her, but given she'd not been holding her wand at the time, there hadn't been a wand to disarm from her. It was useful to be fast like she was but the sacrifice of getting impacted by a spell that hurt was an unpleasant price to pay for getting use of her fingers back. Phew!
And as for kissing talk, well, Owen was too late now, he was, because she had a choice to make between two very, very nice boys, who she liked very much, but she probably really WOULDN'T have minded before. BUT it wasn't like he was serious was it? Besides, Henry was like his bestie right? This was just DUELING and he was trying to be distracting and she was playing along and trying to distract him right BACK!
"Come snog me right now then!" She said, following her words up right away with an attack: a stinging hex, she darted sideways as she cast, bouncing from foot to foot to stay a moving target.
"Incarcerous!" She yelled. Just in case he thought she was done. No way!

Owen watched in disappointment as the disarming spell hit Char but didn't disarm her at all. Damn it. He should think up of a spell to counter her featherlight because her speed was her number one edge. Which terribly showed as Owen didn't have any time to save himself from her stinging hex and just took it on with his non-dominant cornflake-crusted arm. It stung, as the spell implied, and he knew it probably turned red too, but Owen didn't have the luxury to turn an eye on his arm just yet. Instead, he cast the cushioning charm on himself in order to defend against her incarcerous.
And the snogging? "You know what, maybe I will!"Henry probably wanted to fry him right now. Not even halfway through what he said, Owen was already on a zigzag run....towards Charlotte, and firing two consecutive spells. The ears to kumquats one and a skurge that was pointed at her feet.

Since he was rushing at her, or uh... zig-zagging at her, Char aimed low with a trip jinx, which was useful being able to get that one going off at him, but also meant that she had to turn her head to take the impact of the ears to kumquats spell, one of her ears immediately transforming and her hearing dropping out on that side, though the other remained unaffected.
She would have almost thought she'd heard wrong if he'd not started yelling and running at her before the ears to kumquats (or kumquat, singular) had hit her. Would a kiss count as a physical attack? It probably would in Hirsch's books! Though Owen was obbbbviously just trying to psyche her out! WELL it wouldn't work. She was almost Gryffindor enough to stand her ground except that this was a duel and she had to keep moving!
Charlotte dropped to her knees to better bring her wand to bear, yelling out "Protego!" And taking the impact of the spell Owen had sent her way before it could hit the ground near her feet. And now it was heading right back to him, some potential slipping even if he did manage to avoid her trip jinx from just before.
She jumped back to her feet and darted away again, keeping her good ear turned towards Owen.

What did Charlotte think? That he wasn't going to keep himself defended as he hurtled towards her? Then she didn't know enough. Because Owen was all too ready to counter her jinx with his own shield charm.
What he wasn't ready for was her deflecting his skurge back at him, causing him to sway on his feet, lose his balance and subsequently fall on his bum. And because he was running when the spell hit back, the result was that he had no control as his cornflaked state slid in force towards Charlotte, just as he did with Jace Reed. Still into the duel though, Owen aimed his wand at Charlotte, muttering the diminuendo spell under his breath before the impact.

Okay. Good. No dislocated hip. PHEW. So the badger quickly got up to his feet, swished his wand at her and cast, "Anteoculatia!"

Okay this kumquat ear was ANNOYING. She could barely hear what was going on! Also annoying for the record, was when your spell rebounded and hit you and tickled you and you ended up GIGGLING uncontrollably to the point where you couldn't avoid your hair suddenly shooting up and forming into antlers. But Char could at least appreciate the ridiculousness of it sooooo even when the tickling charm stopped making her laugh, she continued giggling.
She probably looked TEEEEEEEEEEERRIBLE. Even Henry wouldn't want to kiss her like this!
"There's no way ANYONE wants to snog me now!" Charlotte pointed out, hopping from foot to foot and looking like some kind of deranged faerie tale creature.
And you know what? Owen should be giggling too, it was FUNNY. She decided to help him along even as he got to his feet, casting rictusempra at him again and you know what wouldn't hurt himmmmm? Kumquat ears too! He already had cornflakes, that would basically make him a well rounded breakfast! Teeheeee!

Owen had barely pulled himself up when he heard Charlotte giggling somewhat hysterically. Guess her own spell rebounded as planned? Straightening, he was about to cast another spell but stopped momentarily when he saw her with antlers. Owen couldn't help his grin as he shook his head. They were looking quite the pair now, weren't they? Him with his cornflake skin and her with her antlers.
To be honest, she looked ridiculous. At her snogging comment, he responded with another shake of his head and a light chuckle. "I still might." Maybe he was joking. Maybe he wasn't.
Maybe he also momentarily forgot that they were still in a duel due because of her distracting she looked that he wasn't able to do anything to defend himself as she cast the tickling charm and ears to kumquat spell at him. "Whaa--" Too late. He was now laughing uncontrollably and IT WAS SO WEIRD because he couldn't even hear himself. HA. HA. HA.
Clutching his stomach as the tickles subsided, he proceeded to cast the babbling curse on Char.

The sheer joy of it, and this particular duel being such a challenge for her andddd....

Having noooo clue what Owen just cast at her, not being able to properly hear the incantation, Charlotte just banked on defending herself and deflecting whatever it was back. Hopefully! Her wand whipped out and she almost overbalanced thanks to crazy antler hair.
"Protego!" She yelled, putting all she had into it.
And maybe she'd get a second to fix her haaaair.

Charlotte was casting a spell at him and Owen couldn't tell what it was because he COULDN'T FREAKING HEAR. Apparently his magic has been sapped too so all the badger could really do at this point was brace himself for whatever the Gryffindor was sending his away.
He attempted to cover himself but the spell still hit and the next thing he knew, as he looked back at Char, he had the TERRIBLE WANT and NEED to talk and talk...about nothing in particular. Bloody hell. Did his own babbling curse bite him back? "Nononono, theskytowersofarupthatmimblewimblesowneroftheshrie kingshackandreyoufreakinkidme...." Did he sound excited?! He DID!! Hirsch had been standing out of the way, just watching the duel take place and judging it accordingly. He was here to grade the duel and see how far the two have come in terms of magical abilities.
Mr Montezor, however, had other plans.
The man paused and looked between the two duellers, a thoroughly confused look on his face. He wasn't stomping down on romance - really, he wasn't - but surely, surely, there was a more romantic setting for this talk than a duel? A duel where there were people in the stands and your own professor was watching? Maybe Mr Montezor needed some guidance on the romance department because if this was a contest on how to woo a girl, he was doing badly.
And it was none of Hirsch's business but.......... you know.
The duel continued and, for the first time ever, he wanted it to end. Not only for his sake - it was awkward to stand there listening to your students talk about snogging - but for the Hufflepuff's sake as well. The word cringe-worthy came to mind and, as soon as there was random babbling where the word snogging came up yet again and........
............ Hirsch was stepping in. Now.
Moving straight towards Mr Montezor, he lifted the curse of the babbling. You're welcome, Montezor. And any other spells in effect were lifted as well, which even included the kumquat ears. "Well, uh, that was an interesting duel." Interesting being the key word here. "I think it's safe to say that you, Miss Kettleburn, have won the duel today. Well done on putting up an excellent fight, Mr Montezor."
And try not to let your hormones get the better of you, okay?
