Welcome to your third and final duel!

This is a key stepping stone into determining your placement in the Jinx Tournament so please take this seriously. A list of spells to use can be found HERE while the cost of physical actions can be found below.

Please note that these actions take away from the Fatigue Points section. Also note that these are only taken into account if you're attacking or avoiding a spell. If you're simply moving around the hall, these points don't need to be considered.

A referee (either Professor Airey or Professor Hirsch) will be present to oversee the duels and will only interfere if the duel ends or any foul play or unsportsmanship-like behaviour is displayed.

Please remember to adhere to the Dueling Club rules, the DADA rules as well as the SS Site rules.

OOC: This duel must be completed by the 26th of March by 11:59pm GMT. You're required to make a minimum of 3 posts each in that time.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate in contacting me about them or posting them in the Dueling Club Rules thread. If you don't think you can post during that time or you don't think you can start/finish your duel, please let me know as soon as possible and we'll try and work something out.

Remember to keep a track of your points both in the title of your post (before any spells have been cast) and at the end of the post (after your charrie has cast a spell). Please refer to this post if you're confused as to how this works or, simply, come to me. Include as much information as you can about the spell in the spoiler section at the bottom of your post, including the directionality of the spell.

Also remember to be as realistic as possible with your charrie's age and ability.

First person mentioned in the thread title is the first person to start off the duel.

You'd THINK that after Charlotte Kettleburn nearly KILLED him the first time they dueled there'd be measures put in place to ensure they never faced off again but no. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Don't ask him what he'd ever done to Hirsch but the man was clearly out to get him and was set on embarrassing him while he was at it. Only facing girls this entire tournament. Setting him up with one that was likely to K.O him in one shot. If this wasn't a set up, the poor boy didn't know what was.

Blaise glanced around the arena, trying to catch the Professor's eyes in the hopes of last minute pleading but his attention soon returned to his friend who was no doubt just thinking about how much they'd practiced and how prepared he should be at the very least.

Well, that didn't matter. None of it did. He didn't like dueling, he didn't like having to cast spells unless they were within a specific context. Being 'prepared'--if you could even call it that--wouldn't make him any more enthused about this than a flobberworm given the job of guarding the city.

Reluctantly, the boy bowed then turned and counted out his ten steps. Most would be wracking their brains for the first spell they'd cast but he was busy wondering if he'd duck, dodge, run, jump, FLY?

At the end of the ten steps there was a bit of internal cringing at the knowledge he would have to turn, face her and cast. Here went nothing. "Mucus ad Nauseam!"

OH THIS WAS EXCITING! DUELING BLAISE AGAIN! Char had won against him the previous term, but that didn’t mean much now did it? Not when she herself had been helping him practice and work on things. It was sort of like, if he won, she could almost take credit for it probably! That would be a good way of comforting herself if that happened.

BUT IT WOULDN’T! She was AMPED. SHE WAS PUMPED. SHE WAS READY!

She flitted through the appropriate paces and bowing and saluting and then turned, with her wand up.

Of course she started with casting featherlight on herself, knowing it was a tried and true approach that worked for her and made the use of her innate speed…

and he was casting at her! SHE WAS SO PROUD! SO VERY PROUD! SO VERY --"Protego!"-- proud of Blaise Bellaire! Char reflected the spell back and hopped from foot to foot.

"Yeah Blaise! You tell that wand who's boss!"

Tell his wand who's the boss? At a time like this?? So she can contradict him for the heck of it??? No thanks. Blaise would cut his losses and do what he did best in these situations--he would throw himself onto the mat in an attempt to dodge his own spell being deflected back at him. Figures the time he actually casts a spell it comes right back to try biting him in the butt. It seemed like he'd have been better off not casting at all just to save himself the trouble. Only problem was that Char would never let him hear the end of it and she probably wouldn't back his story when summer came then his mum would never believe him.

The universe hated him. No question about it. That was why he was stuck in this situation right now with his overly enthused friend who was CLEARLY unable to sense his reluctance and non-existent zeal.

Sometimes that girl was just too happy for anyone's good.

He should get off the ground. He should take up a fighter's stance and show Charlotte that he wasn't ungrateful and DID appreciate that she'd been helping him so far....but his will was weak and the longer he lay there was the less he wanted to be present so he simply remained there on the floor, watching his bouncing friend.

If he aimed just right--and his wand cooperated--he might actually hit what he was aiming for, her ears to be precise. Just needed the right angle and....the right timing for him to cast an ears to kumquats jinx. What were the odds he could just...you know....crawl out of the arena from here? Surely if everyone was busy watching Char, no one would notice him leave.

What was he DOING? What was he DOING ON THE FLOOR? This wasn't going to be another repeat over last time with Chloe was it? Charlotte looked around and just so happened to turn her head so that her ear was facing her friend.

And that ear just so happened to get the full brunt of the spell he'd sent at her.

Just that one.

ONE kumquat ear.

GAAASP.

"I AM DEAF I CAN'T HEAR ANYTHING." At least not on that side. She squinted at him as if that would help the hearing issue. "Staaaand up okay? If you're my FRIEND THEN you will at least TRY okay?" Because how much would it suck to just win (again) because your opponent was giving up so early on?

"Erecto!" Char cast at him. STAND UP BLAISE!

He was her friend...they WERE friends but that had nothing had nothing to do with his refusal to cas--

"WHOA!!!!!!!"

Let him back on the ground! Put him back!! WHY IN MERLIN'S BEARD WAS HE SUDDENLY STANDING ON HIS OWN TWO FEET????????? No no no nooooooooooo! Charlotte Kettleburn was that completely necessary?????? Blaise huffed, openly displeased with the fact he was no longer flat against the ground pretending there was an actual chance of escape. Upright, he was forced to face reality and the reality was that Char wanted to duel.....no matter how much he didn't want to.

"You're not deaf, honest. It's just a kumquat. I'd remove it...but...you probably don't want me trying a reversal spell on you." He'd only ever gotten that one right....wait....never, he'd never gotten that one right--mostly from a lack of trying after the first few failed attempts. With his most sullen expression, the Gryffindor raised his wand in a half-hearted gesture and cast a cornflake skin spell.

He couldn't remember if it worked the last he'd used it. Had Davie blocked it that time?

Merlin he couldn't even remember.

That was BETTER! At least he was on his feet! Char was even willing to tire herself out to make sure he was taking this seriously!

Oh! And he was right about her not being deaf... the second she wasn't yelling she could hear from the one ear that hadn't been transfigured. She tilted that ear a bit more in his direction and put on her I-AM-FOCUSING-ON-A-DUEL face.

She shot a little hot-air charm at him to wake him up, and then slammed her shield up, rebounding the cornflake spell back at him. MORE MORE MORE.

"C'monnnnnnn you can cast stronger than that!" He could! She danced around from foot to foot and threw a stinging hex his way. HUZZAH!

The sudden warmth didn't take much explanation. Char had probably cast that hot air charm and he was probably meant to deflect, dodge or Merlin knew what but all he could do was stand there wondering how it was possibly for her to keep so upbeat and bouncing in the face of these circumstances. It was all he could do to not throw his wand across the room and walk out. Sure, she could still cast at him and it would be the same chances as if he had his wand, but no wand meant he was disarmed and incapable of continuing the duel.

Only problem was that it was probably against the dueling club rules he'd never bothered to read and the boy didn't fancy getting some points lost or something because of his lack of enthusiasm.

There was an internal sort of groan when Char deflected his spell back at him. It was no longer her problem but HIS. Now HE had to figure out what to do about it and all he wanted to do was run--which is exactly what he did. Just a few paces, just enough to keep him from that one spell tha--

ZZzzZZAAAAAaaaAAaaPPPPpppPP!

"Ow!!!!!!!!!" Blaise dropped his wand immediately in favour of flashing about the hand that now smarted something fierce. "Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow!!!!!!!!" HIS HAND MUST HAVE BEEN ON FIRE! IT WAS THE ONLY EXPLANATION! When she wasn't knocking him unconscious she was trying to make him lose his body parts. It was time to re-evaluate the terms of their friendship. He couldn't...just no.

Blaise continued flashing at his hand until the majority of the pain subsided but he would be damned if he picked up his wand again.

Where was that bloody white flag when you needed it?????????

The only problem that Char could see about dueling a friend was that she didn't ACTUALLY want to hurt them (even if she was super happy about the stinging hex hitting its mark! YEAH!), and that especially applied to Blaise.

Once he dropped his wand, Charlotte picked it up and went right on over to him and attacked him in a totally different way.

HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUG.

"Are you okay? I'm sorry I hurt you. Want to go to the hospital wing? Murtlap essence will fix that right up."

His hand hadn't been that colour or anywhere near as welted when he left his dorm earlier. This....this was the evils of dueling and no one was going to convince him otherwise. Just watch him go to Hirsch's office once this was taken care of. It was evident the two would be needing words. He would even get Bentley to take a picture so he could send it to his mum and have her finally reconsider her stance on him HAVING to participate in this club.

Blaise bit at his lip to prevent any unmanly sounds from escaping as he took in his injury. Seeing Charlotte grab his wand and making her way over, every muscle in his body set to BOLT. If she thought she'd convince him to keep dueling she was mistaken. If she wanted to continue attacking, she could have a stand in but he didn't want to do this anymore and was gonna make his stance super clear.

Except........she wasn't attacking him like he'd thought and a hug was nice when you were in pain.

Was she...saying what he thought she was saying? Blaise stood perfectly still a moment, not sure what to make of the offer. "We don't have to duel anymore? Honest?" The young Gryffindor nodding, already happier at the idea that it was over. "And we can get cookies after from the kitchen?"

"It's okay. 'Least I'm still conscious this time." And it wasn't anything to be taken lightly either. It was one thing to lose but a completely different thing to lose and have to be carried out because you weren't even present inside your mind.

He shook his head adamantly at her question. "Keep it, or leave it there, or......maybe I should...." He glanced down at it, sighing as he remembered what she'd said about being a wand and feeling bad if her owner didn't want her. "Fine. I should take her." Reluctantly he reached for his wand and stuck it back in it's holster.

There. Association. He owned up to her at least.

Blaise followed her gaze, looking to the Professor as well. Truth be told, whether the Professor would call the duel or not, he was pretty much ready to walk out.

................ So this was an interesting duel.

See, it'd started off with as much fight as integrity as he could've hoped for. At least, from Charlotte Kettleburn. Blaise Bellaire was another story entirely, and he half wondered where the boy's enthusiasm had gone. At the beginning of the year, in his very first class, the boy had been all too enthusiastic about fighting dummies using mortal combat but now? All of that seemed to have gone.

Oh Merlin, that was NOT meant to happen. The man didn't know what to think because it had been a simple spell but Blaise seemed to be in too much pain from the spells Charlotte had cast. At least the girl seemed to be nice enough to hug it out. Yeah, nice. Hirsch made his way over towards the two, his eyes on the boy only. "Are you okay? Does it hurt too much? Do you need the Hospital Wing?" Merlin, this was a disaster.

And there was no need to announce the winner, was there? Maybe not, especially for the boy's pride.
