Default History of Magic Gallery

Across the corridor from the History of Magic classroom is located a room full of historic and current memorabilia. After all, the present is simply history in the making. Many of the objects found in this room are there for students to view, touch, or even interact with. Anything not permitted to be handled without permission will be found under glass.

A small couch and several comfortable chairs are found in a circular arrangement near the window overlooking the grounds. A short, yet very full, bookshelf is situated next to the seating arrangement to provide a reading and study area.

Magical portraits are hung on the walls throughout the room. Some are notable people throughout history, some are more recent, including a few that Professor Finch has painted himself. Try engaging one in conversation. One never knows what historical secrets the subject of a portrait might have, especially if they were witness to certain events.

Several Egyptian amulets are found in a display case, as well as a few old maps, a self-stirring cauldron, and an ornate box that mysteriously doesn't seem to open. On a table at the other end of the room, one might find a full set of chocolate frog cards, a wizard's chess set, and a pair of extendable ears. Take a look around and see what other treasures you can find to learn about History of Magic up close.

Julien wasn't really one to walk around the school, but it had been awhile since he had been to Hogwarts and after the chaos he had witnessed and the rumors he had heard for the last few years he couldn't help but to check it out. Making his way to the first floor he noticed a room that said History gallery. He liked galleries, so of course he headed in.

It was fascinating right from the start. There was so much to look at. His amazement and curiosity kept him moving further and further in. Finding Egyptian amulets Julien stopped and stared at the pieces.

Ansley had visited the library earlier in the day to help prepare himself for some of his lessons later in the year. He had developed many lesson plans already for the major things he wanted students to know, but he felt there were a few gaps to be filled and he thought the library could provide a little inspiration.

His left arm carrying a small stack of books, he took his time as he walked through the castle. It had been years since he had a proper walk-through and he wouldn't mind getting re-acquainted with Hogwarts and all of its nooks and crannies. But there would still be time for that. He did start out at the opposite end of the first floor, just so he could get a good look at it. It was nice to see the Weasley Swamp hadn't changed from what he remembered.

As he headed towards his office, Ansley thought he heard footsteps from the gallery. Of course it was open for anyone who wanted to have a look and most of the objects that were out were permissible to touch so he wasn't worried about anyone who might be there as long as they weren't causing trouble. But he poked his head in just to take a look before he went to his office.

"Julien, hello!" Ansley gave the Charms professor a smile as he walked in. He was slightly surprised to see an adult rather than a student, but maybe he shouldn't be. History and its artifacts could be interesting to anyone no matter the age. "Could I help you with anything or were you just here to have a look around?" Either was fine with him.

He had been looking at the artifacts inside the room and not paying attention to anything around him. Once another voice came he jumped a bit before turning his eyes on the owner. "Ansley, hello. I hope you don't mind me being in here." He figured it was open for all, but in case he needed to have asked he would apologize. Julien wasn't one to step over rules or directions. That wasn't the way he worked at all. He lived for order, rules, and respect for others things.

"I was just looking around actually. You have some great things in here. Have you collected all of these personally?" He didn't know much about the History professor, but figured he might be someone who traveled and looked for artifacts and such. "We didn't get much time at the feast, I hope you hadn't gotten too wet after that chaos." He still couldn't believe that was what the start was like. Thankfully it hadn't been as adventurous since.

Oh, had he startled him? That hadn't been Ansley's intention, but the other man seemed to take it in stride. "Not at all," he said, his eyes falling on the amulets that Julien had been looking at. "It's open for anyone who wants to come in and learn or just look." And it seemed like Julien found some things interesting here.

"I haven't, not everything at least." He walked past him, catching one of the portraits in his sight. "I collected a few of the artifacts and painted some of the portraits, but some of the things were already here." He wasn't sure who had left them here or how long they had been here, but he arranged things to his liking and assumed they were for the current history teacher to use.

As ridiculous as the feast had gotten, Ansley was able to laugh about it now. "It almost makes me wonder if it was planned, like a welcome to Hogwarts sort of hazing." He hadn't pledged a fraternity when he was at Uni, but he had heard about those sorts of things happening. "But no, I had enough drama to leave before I got too wet."

Good, he was able to come in a look around. He had hoped as much at least. "I enjoy history. It helps us learn from mistakes and it helps us make sure we progress instead of fall backwards. Getting to examine things that were around when we were not has always fascinated me." His eyes back on some of the artifacts in front of him before moving towards the paintings.

Impressive, he was a painter, that was something Julien wasn't expecting. "How does a painter of such detailed portraits end up a History Teacher at Hogwarts?" It was all very fascinating really. How did he himself end up at the school. They each had their own stories in which they all ended up in the castle teaching.

His laugh made Julien eye him a bit. It had been some time, but he still didn't feel the chaos was a laughing matter. "I would truly hope not. It was the most ridiculous form of behavior I have ever watched." His head shaking in such disapproval. "Order is the key to any learning environment, without it we can't have a functioning school. I'm not sure how these professors have made decent wizards out of these children with such chaos going on." The way some of his fellow colleagues acted was something else that hadn't sat well with him.

The way some of his fellow colleagues acted was something else that hadn't sat well with him.
Ansley slowly walked through the room a bit, his eyes falling here and there on the different objects displayed. He was glad to know that others found history to be interesting, even if it was not everyone's cup of tea. "That it does," he nodded in agreement. "I also think it's interesting to see how far we've come when looking at the overall grand scheme of things, though there are always things that stay the same no matter how much things change." Maybe it was more a statement on human nature, but he enjoyed that part of history as well.

He picked up the scarab sitting on top of the display cabinet and ran his thumb over the top absent-mindedly before looking up as Julien asked about the portraits. "Painting is my passion," he said, his eyes shifting to the portrait in front of the other man. "It's something I've been doing a long time.. but it's a side job," he added, putting the scarab back where he had found it. "I went to school to teach and I've found quite a few parallels between art history and magical history. They are both full of fascinating stories." He glanced at Julien again, wondering if he had always been a charms teacher.

That look was a tad bit intimidating - the other man knew he was joking, right? "Well, hopefully that isn't a regular occurrence around here, or else I might be looking through the classifieds again." He chuckled a bit but he wasn't completely joking. He wasn't about to deal with that kind of drama and nonsense on a consistent basis. "I agree though, these kids need to have more structure than was evident during the feast." But he hadn't heard of anything else happening since then. And he wasn't about to put up with misbehavior during his own class.

Yes he did get the how far we have come thoughts. He thought that as well. " Sometimes I wonder if the changes we have made have been for the best." Maybe not with some type of things like what was found in here, but society as a whole. He was very much more of an old fashion type, but many people didn't see the world as he saw it anymore. "This room is very impressive, I do hope more students come to see it. It would do them good."

"It's always good when your passion can be placed into your career." It seemed he was getting to use his portraits for education. Juline understood this since his passion had always been charms. He loved everything there was to know about the subject and he loved to experiment with it. "History was always one of my better subjects, but I always wanted to know more. I enjoyed reading about what had happened, I found it all fascinating and not the least bit boring like most."

"I thought about handing in my letter that night. I couldn't believe I had turned down a head position at my prep school to join this mess." It had settled down since the feast and he was very happy about that, but he was still uncertain how long he would last here if respect and maturity was low all around. "Yes I agree and I will be making sure that manners and respect will be part of my lessons if these students need it."

"Would you like to put Madame Bulstrode away? I think you did a fine job on her essay." Ansley might have even detected a note of genuine admiration in it, even if she could be quite difficult.

"She is actually on loan from a painter friend of mine, but she can be hung up in the gallery next door, if you don't mind. And you can have five points for your helpfulness." Ansley headed for Artemesia's portrait as he'd take her to her spot in the gallery as well.
Would he? "I certainly would," David replied agreeably, his blue eyes growing just a bit bigger at having been assigned this special task. He moved to pick up the ornately framed painting, trying to be as careful as possible.

Oh, so he knew Benjamin Coombs, Madame Bulstrode's painter! Fascinating. "Do you paint too?" he asked the professor as he started to carry the painting, very slowly, toward the door. The gift of five points for his helpfulness nearly made him drop Ms. Bulstrode, but really only one of his hands slipped, as he turned to beam at the professor. And Davie used his leg to balance her portrait out anyway, so no harm was done. "Thanks, professor!" Well that just made his day.

HISTORY OF MAGIC WAS GREAT.

Moving into the gallery, Davie wondered why he hadn't been in this room before?? Truth be told, he supposed he hadn't been in this wing much at all since last year... and since talking to the Grey Lady. Hmm. After he carried in Madame Bulstrode's painting, Davie thought about uncovering her and asking her what she thought of his essay. But she had also seemed a bit tired at the end of the class, so instead he set her down carefully near some other portraits and then drifted over to look at some of the professor's stuff.

----waaaaaaaaait a second. Was that a COMPLETE Chocolate Frog Card collection?! The second year gasped audibly. Who had collected these? He'd heard of his dad once having a complete collection back when he had taught at Hogwarts, but surely these weren't the same cards? Nahhh, they were probably Finch's. BUT STILL, HOW COOL THAT PROFESSORS COLLECTED CARDS TOO?!??!

Interesting. Julien seemed like a rather philosophical man, at least as far as history was concerned. "Sometimes hindsight is 20/20, right?" It couldn't always be known if choices were the correct ones until afterwards once one had perspective. Though if he was talking about progress, Ansley supposed that he could agree that there were good and bad points about that. "I'm glad you're enjoying it. Feel free to stop by anytime." He hoped others would enjoy this room too, but they could stumble upon it themselves to see what it was all about.

Yes, he thought the same about history as well - enjoying it when he was younger, delving deeper into it when he got older. But as the other man finished his thought, Ansley raised an eyebrow. Most? "I'd certainly hope most didn't find history boring." Maybe some, and that could be true about any subject, but he didn't really think most people, or students, found it to be boring. Hopefully he wasn't kidding himself or he'd have his work cut out for him.

Julien had been offered a head position? "Why did you turn it down, if you don't mind me asking?" Perhaps there was something about this job that appealed to him more though. "Yes.. I was wondering if I had made a mistake.." he mused aloud. But hopefully it hadn't been a sign of things to come. He supposed he'd find out for himself soon enough. He nodded. "I plan on making sure respect is adhered to in my lessons as well." It seemed to be lacking from what he had seen at the beginning of the year, but that was not something he tolerated well at all.

Carefully carrying the portrait of Artemesia Timms, Ansley headed out into the corridor with David. "I do paint, actually. Artemesia was the first professional magical portrait I completed," he said, tilting his head in the direction of the painting he carried. And while she had some contribution to history that only some of the students began to touch upon, his fondness for his first painting swayed his decision to include her in today's lesson.

"No.. thank you." Ansley returned the young Ravenclaw's smile. "I appreciate the help, it saves me one extra trip." And perhaps the boy could have a chance to look around in the gallery while he was there. There were a few interesting things there, or at least Ansley thought so. The professor carefully hung Artemesia's portrait in her normal spot on the wall, then glanced over at David who was... not behind him anymore.

He turned fully around and noticed the boy had wandered to another area, seeming to be interested in the set of chocolate frogs. "Feel free to look around, if you want. Anything that is out on display is allowed to be touched." And sometimes hands-on learning was the best kind.

SPOILER!!: Ansley

He would be taking Ansley up on the offer to come back. He enjoyed looking at the historical items. It was kind of calming place. With all the crazy that students could bring it was nice to find a quiet spot to hide. "Thank you, I will probably come and enjoy the things in here again. You have set it up very nicely." He walked over to another set of treasures and looked at them for a moment.

He couldn't help but chuckle, always keen to hope it wasn't your subject that was the boring one. He got that because he felt the same way about his, but reality most of his classmates in back in the day hated history and wanted nothing to do with the books that went with it. "Yes, of course I would hope not. Plus it is weighed heavily on the professor and lessons that teach them about the history." So Ansley would do fine.

"Crazy aren't I?" He thought he was. Turning down the head position for a Charms position. Yes, he could see how it looked. "This school is one of the top and I like being at the top, so of course I was drawn to the position. Plus the private school didn't pay as well. Even the promotion would have been just under what I make here." That was always the difficult thing about teaching and private smaller schools. It was very good to know that Ansley wouldn't be letting students get away with things in his room either.
