The Royal Observatory, Greenwich played a major role in the history of astronomy and navigation, and is best known as the location of the prime meridian. The observatory is situated on a hill in Greenwich Park, overlooking the River Thames.
The group lands in an area hidden from all muggle gazes in thanks to several large bushes. Hopefully no one has become too queasy from the trip, but if you have those bushes are right there to...you know...help you out. After handing the portkeys back to Professor Flamsteed, he instructs you to keep your bum bags with your special entry tickets and muggle money on your person. REMEMBER! Under NO circumstances are you to break the The International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy. After making your way up the hill as a group, you approach the main gate and are greeted by a sharply dressed docent in dark purple who waves as you pass with a cheerful, "Welcome to the Royal Observatory, Greenwich!"
Now through the main entrance, you find yourselves to the left of the Meridian Courtyard, as Professor Flamsteed reminds you by pointing to the guide maps you picked up while still in the Astronomy classroom at Hogwarts. After instructing you all to get them out and briefly going over the various activities he hopes you will be sure to take a look at before needing to catch the portkeys. "Don't forget, meet back at our meeting location no later than 3:15," he sternly reminds the group. "Now get a move on and enjoy your day of scientific inquiry and discovery!"
ACTIVITIES OOC: you do NOT need to do every single one of these activities for full participation credit for this lesson. I would like you to pick AT LEAST 2, ideally 3, and RP accordingly. There is no real post minimum for each activity as long as the content is there. Just have fun with things and, remember, your character is in MUGGLEDOM.

Combining real images from spacecraft and telescopes with advanced CGI, all projected onto a fully immersive dome, the Planetarium can fly you into the heart of the Sun, transport you to distant galaxies, show you the birth of a star or land you on Mars.
The Peter Harrison Planetarium at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich is now London’s only planetarium, and features state-of-the-art HD projection technology, visualisations based on real scientific data and real astronomers and seats 120.
Reflecting ourselves and the universe around us, mirrors can take many forms and they are vital components in many of the telescopes which astronomers have used to explore and understand the Universe. Artist Matthew Luck Galpin used his blacksmithing skills to rework meteorites by heating, hammering, grinding and polishing them into mirrors called ‘Anvilled Stars’.
This process echoes the formation of the planets, pulled together and shaped by gravity, heat and rotation. The meteorites themselves formed when the Solar System was young; they are the left-over remnants of the material from which the planets were made, the building blocks of the Earth and everything on it.
Now you can create one too! Simply present the special ticket to one of the three blacksmiths and they will help you through the process so you can take home a truly one of a kind souvenir.

See how the universe expanded from the smallest and how our solar system was formed. The Astronomy Inspires gallery showcases an orrery from the 19th century which demonstrates the motion of the planets. Alongside is a state-of-the-art projection wall showing the how the Universe formed: from the Big Bang to now in 4 minutes! With many interactive displays, there is much you can discover about how the scientists mapped the seas and the stars!
Just past the entrance to this part of the Royal Observatory you will have the opportunity of touching a 4.500,000,000 year old meteorite! During the early life of the solar system the meteorites were part of the asteroid belt and thought to have reached earth between 6000-4000 years ago, falling in Campo De Ciela (Field of Heaven) in the Argentine desert after a journey of millions of years.
The 28-inch Greenwich refracting telescope is the largest of its kind in the UK and the seventh largest in the world. Completed in 1893 as a replacement for the 12¾-inch Merz that originally occupied its position, it was commissioned in 1885 by William Christie, Astronomer Royal between 1881 and 1911. It was designed to keep the Royal Observatory at the forefront of contemporary astronomy and more active in the growing disciplines of astrophysics and photography. The job of constructing the telescope was given to Howard Grubb, an Irish optical manufacturer who was then the world leader in the field.
Although the telescope was removed from Greenwich to Herstmonceaux in 1957, it was used for research into double star systems throughout its working life until its retirement in the late 1960s. It was returned to Greenwich in 1971, and has become a central part of educational programmes at the Royal Observatory. With the recent addition of a computer-aided guidance system and CCD camera, it continues to work as an excellent visual aid to observing the night sky.
While nighttime provides a more optimum environment, if you wait in the queue long enough you can take a peek through this telescope. We are sure you will still be able to see something - most likely a planet.
Flamsteed House is the original Observatory building at Greenwich, designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1675 on the instructions of King Charles II. The Observatory was built on the site of Greenwich Castle, which originally belonged to Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester (brother of Henry V) and was often used as a guest house and hunting lodge by Henry VIII. Be sure to check out the two time galleries while you explore around here!
But that is not all Professor Flamsteed hopes you will see. Circled on all of your guidemaps is the Octagon Room. The room was designed to observe celestial events including eclipses, comets and planetary movements. However, the positioning of Flamsteed House meant that the original purpose of the Observatory could not be fulfilled from the Octagon Room. With big windows, the room was perfect for watching the sky, but not ideal for positional observations, because none of the walls were aligned with a meridian. Most important positional observations were actually made in a small 'shed' in the Observatory gardens, though King Charles II remained blissfully unaware of this. The telescopes are fully operational and ready for you to take a look through!
The bright red Time Ball on top of Flamsteed House is one of the world's earliest public time signals, distributing time to ships on the Thames and many Londoners. It was first used in 1833 and still operates today. To view the Time Ball you will need to exit the house and watch from the Meridian Courtyard. Each day, at 12.55, the time ball rises halfway up its mast. At 12.58 it rises all the way to the top. At 13.00 exactly, the ball falls, and so provides a signal to anyone who happens to be looking. Of course, if you were looking the wrong way, you had to wait until the next day before it happened again.

Since the late 19th century, the Prime Meridian at Greenwich has served as the reference line for Greenwich Mean Time. It can now claim to be the centre of world time, and was the official starting point for the new Millennium. 22 October 2009 marked the 125th anniversary of the Greenwich Meridian as the Prime Meridian of the World.
The meridian line in Greenwich represents the Prime Meridian of the world, Longitude Zero (0° 0' 0"). Every place on the Earth is measured in terms of its angle east or west from this line. To stand astride the line is to have one foot in the eastern and one foot in the western hemisphere of the earth – just as the Equator divides the northern and southern hemispheres.
The Prime Meridian at Greenwich passes through a massive special telescope called a transit circle. The transit circle was built by Sir George Airy, the seventh Astronomer Royal, in 1850. The cross-hairs seen in the eyepiece of this transit circle define Longitude 0° for the world.
The 'universal day' is measured from the Prime Meridian. It is the average of a year's worth of 'natural' days and is a scientific time scale used irrespective of time zones.
Coolest thing to do here? Walk and/or straddle the Meridian Line, which represents the Prime Meridian of the World – Longitude 0º!
Although the name Astronomers’ Garden is recent, this is the oldest of the gardens at the Observatory, the land having been enclosed when the Observatory was built in the 1670's. Now trapezoid in shape, it has had various names, including: ‘The Lawn’, ‘The Terrace Lawn’, ‘The Terrace Garden’, ‘The Upper Garden’ and more recently, ‘The Home of Time Garden’ (1998–2008). The present name, ‘The Astronomers’ Garden’ is a contrivance dating from 2009.
Unique to this year, the garden plays host to a special exhibit called Longitude Punk’d to celebrate the 260th anniversary of the Longitude Act being repealed. A show where Astronomer Royal John Flamsteed appears in thanks to his time machine is both educational and entertaining. Best of all? After the show is finished you can go up and explore the time machine and other steampunk elements including photoshoot opportunities in costume and wigs with your choice of steampunk prop (including a vehicle and telescope!)

While you won’t find astronaut ice cream here, there is still plenty to spend your muggle money on! Next door to the gift shop is a humble little cafe that offers choices such as sandwiches, gratins and other classics - including stellar parfaits.
Checking his sundial watch, the professor gleefully announces that everyone is free to go about as you please...KEEPING CERTAIN THINGS IN MIND! And mentions something about living long and prospering before running off himself to bask in the glory of the day.

Just when he thought he couldn’t take the spinning any longer, he felt that it started to slow down and let go of the portkey in time when the area came in view. He had travelled by portkey a couple of times before so he managed to stay upright in the air and gracefully glide down to the ground where he softly landed on both of his feet. He wondered how the others would land… should be funny to watch heh.
He checked his bum bag for his entry ticket and muggle money before walking up the hill with the rest of the group until he saw a sharply dressed man who obviously was a muggle whom greeted them . Yoongi didn’t say anything and when the man was done he entered the property after his Head of House had explained the portkey time back.
Checking his guide map, Yoongi was slightly interested in the Flamsteed house. As it had the same last name as their Professor and because he had been very secretive towards Norah earlier during class. Maybe he could find out more there seeing as he was very curious now. As he walked in to the building, he was a little disappointed when there was no giant painting of the Professor himself. One thing that caught his attention immediately was the ..very strange garment. He walked towards trying his very best not to laugh. Had someone actually WORN that kind of dress before? He hoped not...

Ohhhhhh. Just when Janelle thought that nothing could be worse than human bowling, the portkey happened. She was feeling more than a tad quesy after her maiden portkey journey, but she refused to let a little portkey sickness ruin her field trip experience. Determined to shake it off, Janelle took a couple of deep breaths and tried to get her mind right. There had to be a potion or a spell or something magical that could stop one from getting motion sick. She made a mental note to look into that.
After she had gotten herself together, Janelle followed the class to the main entrance. Taking out her map, she reviewed the information. She knew exactly where she wanted to go first and when the professor turned them loose, she was on her way. Janelle had lots of things she wanted to see at the observatory, but first and foremost, she wanted to visit the Meridian Courtyard. Not taking any time to find a buddy or a group to hang out with, Janelle went straight to the courtyard.
When she arrived, Janelle stopped for a moment and took in the sight. She wanted to be at Longitude 0 0 0. Approaching the all important Meridian Line, she stepped onto it and began to walk along as if it were a balance beam. With sudden inspiration, Janelle did a carwheel, trying to stay perfectly on the line. When she reached what she thought was a good spot, Janelle sat down. Then she proceeded to lay flat on her back with her body straddling the the Meridian line. How cool was that? She was in the eastern and western hemispheres at the same time! Without magic. Janelle laid there for a while looking at the sky. She didn't really care that she probably looked ridiculous. This was totally awesome and she was going to enjoy every minute of her field trip........her way.

Stumbling just ever so slightly upon landing Hady took a second to contain her laughter and catch her breath. There was a tad bit of dizziness but nothing like she had experienced with her last travels. "Laughing does work, thanks Professor." She sent a small grin his way before glancing at the rest of her group. She would have to remember that every time she traveled by portkey. Was everyone else alright though? Not sick, were they?
Hady turned her hazel eyes onto everything around them slowly taking things in. Where to start? Should she wait and see if any of the group wanted to check any places out with her before she just wandered off? Shuffling her feet slightly against the ground she peeked over at Zeke and then Dot as well as Dakest and Daxton. Was anyone sticking together or no?

Norah's feet hit the floor with a loud thud, wobbling as one of her knees buckled and her hand flew out to grab somebody before she fell all the way to the floor. Ahem. Hiya Yoongi. She straightened up and gave the Gryffindor an apologetic smile. "Er, sorry 'bout that." This was the part where she took her hand off. Right. She stared, suddenly stuck in the position, at her hand on his arm for a split second longer before jerking it back and putting both in the pockets of her trousers. Nothing to see here. What the heck was that all about?
She gave her head a little shake--maybe she wasn't getting enough oxygen or something because her heart seemed to be beating awfully fast for no apparent reason--then leaned over to look at the map Yoongi had held out. Hold the phone. FLAMSTEED house? It really WAS like she'd said in class! They HAD to go there and figure out the mystery. It was a given. Did Yoongi know how to play be a good detective? She'd wait for Hayden to arrive so they could show him how real mystery solving was done, but the Yoongi was already walking towards the Flamsteed House and she was overcome by the sudden urge to run after him. With a quick glance in Sophie's direction, Norah half-walked half-skipped until she caught up with the older boy. Soph would be fine. She was always fine, right? Plus she'd probably be busy with Zander, anyways.
"OH MAN!" The words came out much louder than she'd meant them too, and she immediately slapped a hand over her mouth. Whoops. Museum voice, riiiiiiight. "Look at that thing! It's awesome." That was the understatement of the CENTURY but who cared. The dress was incredible. Beyond incredible. STELLAR. Almost as good as the giant painting of Professor Flamsteed that she'd hoped to see upon entering the building. "D'ya think somebody actually wore that?"

Landing was as smooth as it could be on unknown terrain, but thankfully it wasn't as much of a jolt to his system as some others had been. He remained calm and collection, even poised as he parted from his group slightly. Was everyone okay?
The trek up to the observatory museumy thing was a quiet one for him, he was simply content with being. Hands in his pockets, he walked casually along with his peers.
Flamsteed's last minute pep talk about meeting places and times and whatnot went unheard, he was too distracted by... things. He figured it wouldn't be a drama anyway, between the there Professor's he was sure one of them would find him, if they knew what was good for them, and besides... he wasn't stupid. He didn't fancy spending time here by himself, so he was perfectly fine with following the crowd.
But... now that they were here, what to do?
He didn't have nearly as much interest in any of this than he had with the last field trip for Astronomy.

"Yeah, food sounds good." Food and then activities. Definitely a plan. One that was quickly put into motion as she watched Zeke pull his money from his bum bag which was tucked under his arm? Really? Surely it wasn't the MOST fashionable thing in the world but it was easier just wearing the thing. Hers was currently covered by her jacket though which was nice.
Hady easily fell into step beside him as she headed for the cafe. It wasn't all that far from where they currently were and the silence between them during the short walk wasn't at all a bad thing. Reaching the door to the cafe she pulled it open letting the lion go through first before getting into line, her eyes slowly traveling to the items of food. "Any idea what is worthy of trying?" she cast a sideways glance at Zeke. Suggestions would be helpful here. There was to much to choose from.

Finally Janelle decided that it was time to get up. That was a shame because she was really enjoying her bi-hemisphere moment. She stood up, did one more cartwheel on the line and pulled out her map. Janelle was on a mission. She wanted to visit as many of the exhibits as possible. She figured that she would hit the ones that she most wanted to see first. Then, maybe she would try to hook up with some of her classmates. Maybe.
Ready to move on, Janelle found the Planetarium on the map. That would be her next stop. Leaving the courtyard, she made her way to her next destination. Arriving at the Planetarium, Janelle joined the line to wait for the next show. She always enjoyed planetariums and the cool things that you could see there. As the doors opened and everyone was allowed to enter, Janelle went inside. She found an empty seat in a good location and made herself comfortable. Checking her watch, she realized that it shouldn't be long before the show started.
As the lights dimmed, Janelle slid down and leaned back so that her head was resting on the back of the chair. Now she was good to go. Let the show begin. As the images appeared before her, Janelle resisted the urge to go Oooooh Ahhhhh. Everything looked so cool. The only problem was, the narrator's voice was a little too soothing, in a sleep inducing kind of way. That was not good.......'cause it was dark. Janelle kind of needed her learning the Airey way. One could not fall asleep when one's desk might be jumped on at any moment.
As the show progressed, Janelle felt like she was learning a lot. She was particularly impressed with images of the sun. It looked like a fiery ball of lava. Cool. All was well until the narrator mentioned that in about a billion years, the sun would run out of juice and die.......sucking all of the planets with it. Sleepy voice narrator say whaaaat? Well that was definitely a buzz kill.
Pondering that fact, Janelle kind of checked out of the movie. The narrator's voice became even more soothing to her............Zzzzzzzzzz. The next thing Janelle knew, she was startled awake by bright lights. Her eyes snapped open and she bolted upright. The show was over and she had missed the big finish. Trying to look as if she had been awake the whole time, Janelle probably overcompensated by making her eyes look a tad too wide. Yep. I'm awake. Saw the whole thing. Janelle stood up, discreetly stretched and followed the crowd out of the Planetarium. It was time to check the map and decide on the next step.

Portkey complete...the group deposited in the hidden location. Benny staggered as they landed but outstretched arms and a few random steps allowed him to keep his feet while he gathered himself from the traveling. Certainly not his preferred mode of transportation...no sir. Soon enough they were hiking up to the observatory as a large group before freed to begin exploring the place on their own with whomever they wanted.
The Gryffindor already knew at least one of his group members, now to see where they went or who else came with them. As the telescope dome was suggested, Benny nodded. "Good place to start," he agreed, watching to see if Paulina or the professor decided to join them along the way.

Caleb landed sort of gracefully, stumbling only a little bit as he got to his feet. As the rest of the class arrived, Caleb looked around at all the different things they could do - and he was supposed to CHOOSE something? Ugh. There were too many things to do! And not enough time! Caleb actually really liked museums, he was a really visual learner and all the thingamabobs you could play with at museums were definitely more than enough to hold his interest.
He decided to go toooooooo...the planetarium. Yes, he'd read about these and never had a chance to actually go to one! He wondered if you actually DID feel like you were in space when looking up at that sky. And did it have one of those two orbed projection thingies in the middle? He couldn't wait to find out!
Headed into to the planetarium, he grinned when he saw he was JUST in time to catch the next showing. Score!

Soooo... they had to join a line to get to see through the telescope. No worries. He could wait. He would just distract himself by looking around the dome as he bounced on his feet. "Hope this line moves faster,'' he said . "I can't wait to look through that telescope!'' But what would he see? to no one in particular. Adi did figure it would be more than clouds and the sky at general.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Plus she'd probably be busy with Zander, anyways.
"OH MAN!" The words came out much louder than she'd meant them too, and she immediately slapped a hand over her mouth. Whoops. Museum voice, riiiiiiight. "Look at that thing! It's awesome." That was the understatement of the CENTURY but who cared. The dress was incredible. Beyond incredible. STELLAR. Almost as good as the giant painting of Professor Flamsteed that she'd hoped to see upon entering the building. "D'ya think somebody actually wore that?"
Of course he had noticed that Norah had grabbed his arm earlier but he honestly had not minded. She had nearly fallen down and he understood that she simply needed something or someone to hold on to. Which had been his arm this time.
He didn’t say anything back when she apologized but did send a small smile her way before he had walked off to the Flamsteed House. He hadn’t exactly planned to go with someone or a group. And as the group of students went their own way he was oblivious to Norah following him.
Until he heard a shout behind him inside of the Flamsteed House and he turned around with his eyebrows raised. “Try to keep your voice down, I’m not sure that purple suited muggle would like it” he wasn’t warning her, just advising because he didn’t want her to get in to trouble.
Turning back to the weird and ugly garment, Yoongi looked at Norah in shock when she said that thing was awesome. Was she joking or…? “Well, it belonged to Margaret Maskelyne and it was used in a wedding….” Seriously? That hideous thing was worn at a wedding? Looking around, Yoongi spotted some old school telescopes. “You think those work?” he asked the Hufflepuff Prefect and pointed towards them.

Angel didn't know if the Professor would let her team up with him like last time because he hadn't said anything and now she was looking around once she had gotten to the place for someone to go and spend time with because it would be boring on her own and she had a feeling she wouldn't like it.
"Anyone want to partner up with me?" Angel asked she hoped that she could find someone, she wondered where both her sisters were because she would have asked them if they wanted to spend some time with her.

Actually, Rooney was going to be having words with Professor Flamsteed about how awful that was even though he'd done it multiple times before. Tummy turning. Heady hurting. Armsies aching... Tummy tummy turn turn. Uh oh. Discreetly, Rooney emptied his bag contents into his pockets and used the space in the bag for the burn that rose through his throat and spewed out of his mouth as sick.
Maybe not so discreetly...
... There had been a little bit of noise.
The Ravenclaw closed his bag and looked around him desperately for another one, choosing the closest person to him and unclipping theirs before putting it on himself.
As soon as his bare feet slammed into the ground, Daxton let go of the weird stuffed toy and stumbled backwards from the group to get his personal space back, but managed to stay upright. His stomach felt weird after all that, and if he had eaten any breakfast, he might have been worried he would soon be seeing it again. As it was, he was fine, just put instantly into a foul mood. That had been horrendous. Why did people choose to travel like that?
He was not ready to follow the group towards the main entrance, but after a moment of scowling and collecting himself, Daxton followed along too. Even after Airey Flamsteed had let them go, Daxton stayed where he was, alternating between frowning at his guide map and watching the other students leave, trying to decide where would be the least busy destination.
For the second time today already, he was torn by indecision over where he wanted to go. The telescope dome seemed like it would be most interesting, but surely everyone else would have the same idea and it would be so busy. Maybe he would just... wander?
He still did not move however, but continued to study his map. Daxton must have looked quite the sight, with his shoes and socks still tucked under his arm, weird bum bag strapped across his chest, and rocking backwards and forwards gently on his bare feet, all the while occasionally surveying his surroundings, very much on edge.

He still felt a little queasy, though...
Olly had only traveled by portkey once before in his life. It had not been fun then, and it was not fun now. He was unable to keep his balance, and ended up landing on his bum, hard. He winced as he got to his feet, hoping it wouldn't bruise. That would make for a not very fun couple of days.
Deciding to ignore the fact that they would be traveling by portkey back to the classroom, Oliver focused on more positive things. They had arrived, and he could explore the planetarium. There were probably a lot of cool things to see! Remembering that there was a pamphlet in his bum bag, Oliver reached for it. But it wasn't there. His bum bag was gone.
WHERE HAD IT GONE? Had it fallen off? What even happened to something that had fallen off while being transported by a portkey? Where did it go? Would it be lying on the ground somewhere? Oliver looked around anxiously, but there did not appear to be any spare bags lying anywhere. Had someone STOLEN it? Had he really been disoriented enough that he wouldn't have noticed? Probably, but who would have stolen his bum bag. WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THAT?
"PROFESSOR! MY BUM BAG IS GONE!" He cried out, a stricken look on his face. He knew he'd had one.

Paulina somehow managed to land relatively smoothly despite the unfamiliar terrain. She'd take a slight stumble over a faceplant any day of the week.
And now she got to explore the observatory!
She was excited, because Astronomy actually interested her. Not as much as plants, but it was in second place. Space was just COOL, and she really enjoyed whacky Professor Flamsteed and his crazy lessons. Competitions were never her thing, but some of the activities he had them do were pretty fun. AND FIELD TRIP. He was awesome enough to take them on a trip.
She'd never been on a field trip before.
Adi and Benny were planning to head over to the telescope dome, and that sounded like a great idea to her. She was definitely going to take them up on the invitation. "I'm coming too!" It didn't even matter to her that they had to join a line. Looking back, she hoped that Professor Myers was going to come along as well.

"Everything?" he offered. He couldn't think of any food that WASN'T worthy of trying. Even if it was bad, or strange, everything deserved a chance, did it not? "I might just go a sandwich though..." seemed the easiest choice, and perhaps the most economically viable one too. Ham and cheese? Lettuce and egg? Or what looked like beef and tomato? Hmm...

Okay, traveling by portkey wasn't that fun as she'd thought. Ava felt a bit dizzy but it seemed like she's fine. No airsick thought. She waved to the Head Boy to notify him that she's perfectly okay. Not being lost from him. Well, in case if he's wondering where were his team member was.
But HEY, she's in Royal Observatory Greenwich now!! The young lioness picked up the brochure from her bum bag to see what she could do in this place. Hold on, Professor Flamsteed had a house here? Oh, it's no him actually. So.... first destination, the planetarium! This place seemed cool since she could watch the planets and stuffs.

Thankfully, he didn't face-plant into some mud again during his portkey journey over here. Luckily,he managed to establish some kind control and landed on his feet this time round. Henric declared it as one of his proudest moment. Oh yeah! Anyway,they were soon released to freely roam around the museum and his first destination was to visit the amazing planetarium. He noticed his friends Adi, Benny and Paulina were heading towards the direction of the telescope dome. Brilliant! Perhaps he would meet them later after he explored the planetarium first. Now he wondered who were heading towards the same direction as him, he didn't mind the company at all.

OH NO. The person KNEW. And it was someone that Rooney KNEW of. He felt sick once more just by that thought and instead checked his map to decide EXACTLY where he was going. Alone. Because he couldn't admit to anyone that he was the thief. Instead, he pulled his jumper up over his hair to hide who he was, dumped the bum bag full of his puke and the contents of the Slytherin's original bag onto the floor at the first years feet and wandered away. ToootaAAALLLLLY inconspicuous.
Someone probably saw him.
Someone probably had already told Professor Flamsteed that he had hurled and ran. Forget a hit and run. This Ravenclaw was a criminal. Hurled and ran. Hurled and ran.
Literal ran.

He was SO headed to the Planetarium. Away from the puke.
