Default The Quill: Term 41

Do you attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? Do you find yourself thirsting for the latest happenings and news around this school? Do you often wish you had a reliable source (AHEM, eyes on you, Aparecium) to deliver these things? If you answered 'Yes' to any of these questions, LOOK NO FURTHER.

Returning for its second year in a row, the famed "The Quill" student publication of old is continuing strong! "The Quill" is both an IC and OOC student-run newspaper. It differs from Aparecium because it's not strictly gossip, and differs from the Yearbook because it publishes more regularly and has different types of articles. A good way to describe "The Quill" would be to picture the Daily Prophet just for the happenings at Hogwarts.

Below is a listing of the Staff and students currently involved in the publication.

The Quill Staff
Staff Advisers
Leobald Kitridge (Nordic Witch)
Paul Myers (kayquilz)

Editor
Sophie Brown (feeheeheeny)

Writers
Charlotte "Char" Kettleburn (Tegz)
Phillip Romalotti (hermionesclone)
Marsha Hanover (Stormdancer)
Rowan "Rusty" Fields (JustAlice)
Magdalena "Maggie" Traulton (Lislchen)
Noel Wallace (Samia)
Zander Adair (ArianaBlack)
Reagan Penrose (Govoni)

OOC: This is COMPLETELY IC (In Character). Since this is the case, anything submitted via our questionnaire needs to have happened IN THE SCHOOL RP on Snitchseeker. At this time, we aren't including Twitter RPs/Twitter characters to be mentioned in the publication. This is to help keep everything canon and relevant to IC student life.

With that said, we do have Tumblr and Twitter accounts, where content will be uploaded and referenced. Everyone is encouraged to follow these accounts. As for content/material posted ON Snitchseeker, reference this thread. Only "The Quill" Staff Advisers or the Editor are allowed to post here.

We also have old Quill issues, so if you're curious about Hogwarts' oldest and only OFFICIAL student newspaper, be sure to check out the Quill Issue Archives, the Quill Article Archives, and our Quill reboot from Term 40! Happy reading!

Hogwarts’ Revitalised Heart
by Marsha Hanover

There was something rather weird and disheartening about returning to Hogwarts this year, due to missing so many of our beloved staff members that, it almost seems like an uphill battle, especially without Headmistress Truebridge at the helm. However, I have something important to tell you; a glorious and magnificent creature to share with you that will fill you with understanding, courage, and hope for Hogwarts' future. Professor Dumbledore even had one of these fantastic birds as a companion while he was the reigning Headmaster between 1956 and his death in 1997.

A gorgeous mix of deep clarets, flaming crimsons, and blooming golds, the Phoenix is one of the most overwhelming magical creatures that we could ever hope to meet. With a lifespan of at least five hundred years, the Phoenix holds the inescapable ability to renew itself through reincarnation. At the end of its life, when it is old and frail, the Phoenix will burst into flames, leaving in its wake a pile of ashes amongst which a brand new chick and heir will appear. It is this ability that I hope you will ultimately take note of, as it proves that out of darkness can come something brand new and amazing. I, for one, am certain that Headmaster Botros will carve his own story, as has been happening since the Founders created our glorious school.

Although given a Ministry Creature rating of XXXX, the Phoenix is one of the most gentle creatures that has ever been rated due to its lack of domestication. It can carry extremely heavy loads to safety, its tears can heal even the most infected wounds and much like the diricawl, a Phoenix can disappear and reappear at will. Additionally, the Phoenix’s song can escalate the bravery and courage in the hearts of the pure, let yourself hear her song on the wind and believe that we will get through this. Her tears will aid us in patching over our fears of what lies in the shadows and we will unite, developed and flourishing in the face of adversity.

The Phoenix has long been associated with the passing of time and eternal love, so in this time, my fellow Hogwartians, I ask you to remember that we will evolve and we will develop into the strong and powerful bird that is the middle stage of a Phoenixes life. We will be rebuilt from the ashes and rubble of losing so many staff members at once, and we will emerge solid, stable and better for it.

Top Ten Ways to Survive OWLs
A Guide to Fifth Year

by Noel Wallace

Precious Fifth Years! It is finally THAT time in your life. OWLs are upon you and mistake not, they will mess you up and there is absolutely no running away. By the end of the year, you will have either survived them or have been kidnapped by spiders, saved, and then still be told that OWLs are happening. So without further ado, I am going to let you in on ten tips to help you survive your Fifth Year (a.k.a the OWLs year).

These also apply to Seventh Year students who are sitting their NEWTs...but I assume they already have a system going on - I mean, there must be a reason they are now in Seventh Year, right?

1: Calm the hippogriff down!

You can do this! Or, well, you have to do this no matter what, so why panic? Cool it, breathe, and we will get through this.

2: Make a plan

Fifth Year is hard and you won’t get any special treatment. You will get homework and you will have to attend classes, but it is your responsibility to figure out how you will make time to study for OWLs, as well. Divide your time between subjects appropriately. Give more time to subjects you are weak at. Figure out how much time you need to study each day and stick to it.

3: Figure out your study method

Do you like to pace while you memorize stuff? Then walk! Does your brain work more efficiently in the morning? Wake up at the crack of dawn! Do you like explaining stuff to yourself out loud? Talk away! Yes, the other students will get annoyed but who cares? They don't have to appear for OWLs, do they? Find your comfort zone and submerge yourself in.

4: Find your space

Is it the corners of the library? Set up camp there; Mr. Kitridge is a nice fella, he won't mind. Is it the confines of your dorm? Stay in bed...but please do venture out to bathe. The Quill is not responsible if your dorm mates toss you out for stinking up the place. The gist is...YOU need a space that has ALL your stuff organized and proper for all the studying you have to do.

5: Attach yourself to a Ravenclaw friend

I know that some of you might like to do all your studying alone but trust me, you can really benefit from studying with a friend, especially a Ravenclaw. You can challenge and keep each other on top of things. And there is absolutely no shame in asking for help. So, please!

6: Make notes!

Write everything down. Do not think that you will remember it just because you heard it or read it once. Trust me, you won’t. Besides, the notes will be easier to read through when you are revising.

7: Take a break

Every so often, give yourself a break. If you have been following a plan, and not avoiding the inevitable – you deserve a break. Go swimming in the lake or hang out with friends. It is healthy for your brain and for your sanity.

8: Snackin’ & Stressing

Okay, let’s face it. You are going to have panic attacks and there will be moments when you will think your brain has crashed. My recommendation? Make a Puff friend and get them to supply you with endless food. Eating helps! Do you know why Hufflepuffs are so happy all the time? Yep, it is because of that kitchen right next to their common room. Keep in mind, eating and staying hydrated is a very important. It is a stressful time and you might often forget to eat or drink...and that is a no no.

9: Don’t cram

You had the whole year to study, buddy. The last night is NOT the night that is going to save you. So, let go and go to sleep.

10: STAY SAFE!!!!!!

Protect yourself at all costs. Hogwarts likes to have a laugh by throwing life threatening situations at you, so stay alert! Don’t get kidnapped by spiders or catch the flu if an endless winter starts OR pick up any books that might turn you into a pirate.

Student Spotlight: Cinnamon Bayless
by Zander Adair

You know her, you love her, and now The Quill has taken notice. Cinnamon Bayless is one fierce lion who’s a force to be reckoned with. Though she excels in all areas academically, Bayless is also very creatively inclined and takes true pride in the arts. We decided to sit down and learn more about her passion for design and her plans for the future as she experiences her final year at Hogwarts.

So, Seventh Year, huh? How the heck did that happen?! I feel like there’s SO much to do and so little time to do it all. Is there anything about this year that you’re particularly looking forward to?

It's finally here. Where did the time go, though? I started Hogwarts in my third year, but honestly it feels like I've been here the entirety of my education. Alas, Seventh Year makes me really happy and sad all at once. I'm not ready to go out into the real world yet, but at the same time, I want to go to Uni and start a career, and do the whole Adulting thing. This term is already flying by. June will be here before we know it.

Also, I'm really looking forward to dueling club making a come back this term. I think that will be a lot of fun. And Gobstones, too! I've really enjoyed participating in the matches over the years. Personally, I wish that there were more extracurricular activities and clubs here since I'm pretty sure I'd join every single one of them. Mainly, I'm looking forward to spending time with my friends as much as I can, between studying for NEWTs, which, by the way, is something I'm not looking forward to.

We hear you’re a fantastic artist and you’re also a total style icon. What gives you inspiration? Is there anyone you look up to?

D'aww, that's so sweet. With my art, my inspiration usually depends on my mood or location. I love drawing scenery and landscapes, but at the same time I like painting distorted lines, faces, and abstract objects that people can look at and see totally different things in my art. I love that. That's what truly inspires my art.

As far as fashion goes, there are so many people I look up to in the fashion world! There are so many truly incredible people that inspire me in my own style from day to day. I've interned with Ariana Gunter and Gavin Remmington; both of which are amazing designers. Pensacola Morgan-Bott is definitely my main fashion icon. however. I want to start my own label one day, just like she did. Also, when it comes to my personal style, I just do what feels good and comfy in-the-moment, but not hanging-out-in-my-PJs-like-a-couch-potato comfy. I use fashion to express who I am, the same way I look at my art.

Speaking of which, I’m sure there are tons of younger students who look up to YOU. What’s your best piece of advice for other aspiring artists and fashion designers?

Always be yourself. That's something that no one else can change. Do what you want. If you want to wear a leather skirt, wear it. If you want to wear a snapback with a dress and sneakers, do it. All of us are different. We like different things and have little quirks that make each of us special. Take that and use it to show who you are. With fashion, there's no limit on what you can do. Styles change so fast, and they fade, and then they come back. Though, really, there are some trends that shouldn't.

How did you get your start into the fashion world?

I've been drawing since I can remember. One day, I saw a contest for young designers in a magazine. I got to thinking, I'm pretty good at sketching out things, transfiguring, and sewing (which I learned from my Nana). I thought that I would give it a try. I got second-runner up; not bad for someone who hadn't even thought about it as a career. That was probably the last thing I'd consider as a career, actually. But I enjoyed myself and continued working on it; making my own clothes and accessorizing my outfits. It became second nature in a way.

Do you think this is where you see your career heading?

Yes, I hope so. In fact, I always wanted to teach primary grades. It was something that I always saw myself doing. That was, of course, until I was bitten by the fashion bug. I do plan on going to uni after Hogwarts; learning more about the designing side, as well as the business side.

Oooh if fashion doesn’t work out, I think you’d make a fantastic teacher! Are there any Professors here at Hogwarts who have helped make an impact on who you are today? Or even just a moment in the castle?

Well, to be honest, last term had a huge impact on me. I know that I come off as this mean, tough girl but really, the acromantula attack opened up my eyes. I feel like dealing with that has made me calmer, and more aware of my attitude. I also think it made me realize that although I'm tough, it's okay not to be all of the time.

As for professors who've had an impact on my life, there's not a single professor here today or one that I've had since that's not had some sort of impact. They're all wonderful and great educators. I could probably sit here all day and gush about each of them.

Okay, get ready. This is probably the most important question of all. Do you ever plan on sharing the recipe for your famous cinnamon rolls? I’m only asking for a friend… A friend that really, REALLY likes your cinnamon rolls.

Oh, well...if anyone ever did want the recipe for my cinnamon rolls, I'm sure all they would have to do is ask. In fact, I might even make a batch with this person, so they can also experience what they are making.

On behalf of The Quill staff, I’d like to thank Cinna for taking time out of her incredibly busy schedule to open up to us. We can’t wait to see her in action this year!

Professor Spotlight: Paul Myers
by Marsha Hanover

Today, I would like to introduce our brand new Herbology Professor and The Quill’s co-Advisor, Professor Paul Myers. A previous Ravenclaw student and Herbology major who studied in Dublin, he has an appreciation for everything plant-related and for experimenting in his own greenhouses. The English-born Professor loves curling up in front of a fire with a good book, playing the banjo with his band, and living in Italy while he isn’t here at Hogwarts teaching us. I was lucky enough to catch some of his time earlier this week to get to know him a little bit better.

First, hi! I'm super excited to have you here. Why did you want to come teach us?

I came here to pass on my knowledge of botany and herbology onto you kids. So you can hopefully, one day, make the amazing discoveries my peers and I won’t get around to doing! The youth are the future, after all!

What made you love your subject? What other experience do you have that will help with teaching your subject?

I have a very deep connection with meditation and also...I horseback ride! It’s helpful to know the physical limits of the body so that we can move beyond it with our spirit. This is helpful in teaching Herbology because plants...don’t speak like us, nor do they work like us. We need to connect with them on a level that is not human.

What type of teaching style do you think you have?

A very laid-back, relaxed style that also requires some hands-on experience. I don’t think learning is about facts and figures; learning is about experiencing new material and understanding what you’re doing.

Do you have a favourite house?

Well, I was a Ravenclaw...so….You know. I might be just a wee bit biased!

What personal interests do you have, that could help the school and the students in the future?

RECYCLING! We are not a very green campus at all! Merlin’s PANTS, the amount of money we could save if we just reused parchment and quill feathers!

What hobby of yours is the least related to Herbology and why do you love it?

I play Banjo! I’m in a BAND. It’s fun and I’ve been banjo-ing for awhile now. It settles my mind and keeps me grounded; keeps me focused. It helps me relax, and I like getting a little lost while I play for a few hours at our venues.

What is your favourite plant? Why pick it and what can it be used for?

I really adore alihotsy. It’s a funny little guy...that makes you laugh! I like laughter, and I think it’s a useful plant for potion-making, as well. I just really like it!

What is your favourite thing to indulge on?

I adore PUMPKIN SPICE FLAVORED LATTE’S! AAAHHHHHHHHH!

If you could pick one pranking toy from Zonko's or Weasley's, what would it be?

I just...really find muggle cards fascinating! I have no idea how any of the games work! My partner and I always try to learn a game called “Go-Fish” but...it’s just so weird! There’re pairs..and….Merlin, no fish involved, what so ever!

Is your door always open? Can students come to you for advice or help if they need to?

Always ALWAYS open! I love talking, I love listening; I can do whatever you all need me to do. I am here to further and enrich YOU, not me. I am not the important component in this equation at all! I love all of you!

Divining with the Mystic Ro
January Horoscopes

by Rowan Fields

Are you interested in what's in store for you this month? The sky has the answers! Hidden away inside those twinkling constellations is the key to unlocking your future: Whenever you feel like you are unsure of what lies ahead, the heavenly bodies will provide you with the information that you need. So here it is...the ultimate low down on how the planets are going to influence you for the next lunar cycle. Just find your star sign and away you go!

Aries
Oh, Aries, something’s really bothering you isn’t it? It can be difficult when you’re the only one who sees a problem with something, but if you persevere in finding a solution, people will eventually realise you’re serious, and come around to your way of thinking. Try a different approach and stay away from the number 12 this month.

Taurus
Now then, Taurus. As a stubborn sign, it’s often that you will find yourself digging your heels in over the tiniest detail. Sometimes, it’s good to stick so closely to your original plan, but this month it will be worth trying to see things from someone else’s eyes. Ask for a little help from someone and you’ll master that charm or potion that has been bugging you!

Gemini
It can be easy to lose faith when nobody seems to want to listen to you, but maybe you should try a new communication tactic? Sometimes when people hear the same thing over and over again, they tune it out. So, find new ways to talk to people and you’ll find yourself rising out of this rut! Yellow is lucky for you this month. So, way to go, Hufflepuffs!

Cancer
So, you’ve had a little trouble seeing eye to eye with someone lately, and it’s starting to wear you down. Why not have a few days away from this person to cool off? Then, when you spend some time with them again, try to remember why you’re friends in the first place. No need for any magical interference, just the magic of friendship!

Leo
This month is looking golden for you, Leo! Don’t be afraid to glam up a bit, cause gold and yellow are fantastic colours for you at the moment. You’ll find your potion-making may be a little wobbly, but your charms are going to be especially strong right now so be careful; if you’re too excitable with them, you could end up getting yourself in a pickle!

Virgo
Be careful, Virgo. Something that looks perfect now may not be as good as it seems. Remember to check details this month or you could end up doing something you’ll really wish you had decided against. A little divination to aid your decision-making could stop you from finding yourself in a tricky situation.

Libra
Something amazing is coming, Libra. There’s a glimmer on the horizon and it’s going to be brilliant. Remember to keep your eyes on the prize this month, because if you get too distracted that little glimmer could go out, and you’ll never know what a wonderful thing it could have been. Also, the number 9 is lucky for you right now.

Scorpio
I hate to break this to you, Scorpio, but you just can’t go on like this. Those little niggling annoyances that are ruining your days are really not worth the attention. If you don’t try to see the positives you could end up losing friends. Luckily, there is a little boost of goodness coming your way - focus on that!

Sagittarius
January is a good month, isn't it Sagittarius? It was just your birthday (and if it wasn't, then you just had a lovely celebration). Expect the lovely moments to continue among friends, and if you were planning something for your significant other, now would be the time to do it!

Capricorn
Good times are on their way! It's your birthday and you're planning some fantastic times with your friends, and on top of that: the winter holidays are here! Whichever festival you celebrate, you're guaranteed a little boost to your magic around this time. So, try that difficult spell you've been dying to give a go. Trust me.

Aquarius
It's been a year of ups and downs, hasn't it? But it's going to end on a high note. There's a wonderful surprise coming your way, so keep an eye out for the little hints. Remember everyone who's helped you out this year, even in the smallest of ways; it's the perfect time to thank them and start the new year in a positive way!

Pisces
As a water sign, you may be beginning to feel a little caught up as winter draws in, freezing your motivation a little. But don't worry! The thaw is on its way. Though the weather may be cool, the warmth and joy of this time of year will quickly set you back on track and help you throw this rut.

Professor Spotlight: Abraham Botros
by Sophie Brown

For this month's Professor of the Month, The Quill has chosen to highlight the one, the only: Headmaster Abraham Botros!

We students should feel awfully lucky to be under such dynamite leadership with this inspirational man in charge. As you might not know, Headmaster Botros has a degree in Primary and Secondary Wizarding Education, Pre-Healer Studies, and Rune Study... making him a very diverse, skilled gentleman indeed! Does anyone else feel a lot safer knowing the head of our school knows a bit about Healing, and that he is a Hufflepuff alumnus? We have already gotten to see his stereotypical "Hufflepuff" influence within this new role with the many new rules that have been enacted, from his good-natured rule about switching your shoes at his office door, to the rule about humming the Hogwarts school song upon entering the Great Hall on Saturdays; in addition to all the events the staff have held to build camaraderie among our student body. There is no doubt that Headmaster Botros has organized these activities to engage students, attempt to undo some of the chaos that has reigned over past terms, and to give Hogwarts new life. This brilliant vision for a safer, happier Hogwarts could not have come at a better time, and Headmaster Botros' influence has already brightened the attitudes of students and professors alike!

As anyone who has ever held a conversation with him knows, Botros is more than just a sweet face: he is kind, compassionate, wise, sincere, and more than anything, it is very clear that he cares very deeply about each and every one of his students, wanting the best for them. He pushes our youthful population to their limits; inspiring them to strive to be the best they can be. His positive, fun changes to the daily routine of the school proves that he seeks to provide an optimal educational experience here at Hogwarts for every student who passes through the doors!

In the classroom, Headmaster Botros has a unique way of enchanting his students and making the study of runes enticing, interesting, and enjoyable, too! And if you are resourceful enough to take advantage of the Headmaster's office hours and pay him a visit - which we highly recommend - you will meet his friendly crup, Feo, and find many, many photographs of his beautiful family around his office. A true family man, Headmaster Botros loves all children, especially his two sons, two daughters, and his many grandchildren, but please mind your manners, kids! He will not tolerate impoliteness or disrespect! He is stern, but gentle, and any returning students can attest to his skills as a good listener, a warm encourager, and the wisest mentor anyone could hope for!

We know that Headmaster Botros is a very busy man now that he is no longer just teaching Ancient Runes, but we here at The Quill are certain that he would absolutely love to get to know each and every one of you personally, and help you in any way he can. He may be a big important man now, but he is still the same sweet professor we all know and love and he still cares deeply about us! So, do not be afraid to reach out and get to know him - you absolutely will not regret it!

War of the Planets
by Phillip Romalotti

For years, we’ve understood that our solar system contains eight/nine planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune...and Pluto (if you personally believe it's a planet). But what if I told you that there was once ANOTHER planet in our solar system? Would you think I’m cuckoo?

Probably.

Let’s go back to a simpler time. While scientists thought that there were four giant gas planets to begin with, it didn’t explain some of the things that our current solar system has. So, they came up with a theory that there were five gas planets to begin with: Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, Uranus and the other planet, which we’re going to call Planet X. Planet X must have gotten very close to Jupiter and, I guess, Jupiter couldn’t handle that. Lack of personal space, you know? Because of this, Planet X then moved so quickly and at such a rate, that it broke free from the gravitational pull of the Sun, meaning that it was now gone from the solar system.

Not all giant planets can handle such large ejections. To be able to make this happen, some planets would have had to sacrifice something: whether it be a moon or its orbit. Before looking at the moons, scientists initially pointed their fingers at both Jupiter and Saturn, calling THEM the culprits of this war. But if Saturn was the culprit, it would have found it hard to bounce off Planet X and would have probably lost its moon, Iapetus. Jupiter is bigger, stronger, and much more capable of rebounding a giant planet while still keeping its moon, Callisto. What a greedy planet.

So here’s a note to the other planets: don’t get on Jupiter’s bad side if you want to stay in the solar system. Just don't.

Dear Agony Aunt, I've known what I want to do when I graduated from Hogwarts since I was about 5-years-old, and it doesn't really require OWLs or NEWTs to be successful. I'm starting to think I should focus on my future and not worry about my grades, but my friends disagree. What do you think?

Love,
Actually Artsy
Uh, how the heck did you know that early? All I knew when I was 5-years-old was how to throw a fit. But uh, I think I’m supposed to be the one giving advice here so y’know, just scratch out that first line… Will ya?

I think that it’s cool that you know what you wanna do, ‘cause some of us still don’t have a clue. But I also think that your friends have got a point… Are they Ravenclaws? It’s always good to have options and honestly, even though OWLs and NEWTs were probably made by a bunch of old people who are out to ruin our lives, I think they open up a lot of possibilities, too. It’s always good to have a backup plan, ‘cause maybe down the road you’ll need to switch things up.

As much as it pains me to say so, I think you should take them.

Hope that helps?

Gryffindor Prince

I totally hear where you're coming from. I'm a firm believer that you should do what you want and follow your heart, but hey, it doesn't hurt to be good at loads of things, does it? You're going to be required to take your OWLs and NEWTs one way or another, so why not blow them out of the water just to say you did it? It never hurts to have things to fall back on, so I'd say keep your options open and don't close doors before they have the opportunity to open up to you. Plus, consider this a test of your character. Do you really want to kick back and dismiss your grades as unimportant, or do you want to fight for the best grades you know you can get and prove that you've got brains to go with that talent of yours? Don't settle for less than you can be. Push yourself and persevere. We believe in you.

Ravenclaw Princess

Dear mister and missus aunt, I don't know if it's true that you are good at advice, but I'm going to ask you stuff anyway because I'm nice like that and you probably need my questions. What feels different when you LIKE like someone instead of just like them? Also how can you tell if someone LIKE likes you? Also why does it feel like having dragon pox and like you can't remember how to breathe sometimes and you see spots? Also is it contagious? And will dragon pox potions make you act normal again? (Where can I get a dragon pox potion?)

Signed,
Infected, probably
Firstly if you actually do have dragon pox, PLEASE do everyone a favor (including yourself) and see the healer because we do not need another Hogwarts plague the Hogwarts spirits are letting us have one good year finally, we need to preserve this rare moment.

But anyways LIKING someone is hard to define. But it feels like your whole stomach is doing flips and you can’t remember how to talk and— Basically when you know… You kinda just know. That’s sorta baloney advice, but you just have to listen to your own feelings ‘cause you’re the only one who can tell you how you feel.

And you can’t really know if the other person feels the same way unless you tell them. You’ll feel loads better too. And the good news is that the awkward stage only lasts for a few years afterwards and then things will go back to normal in no time!

Hope that helps?

Gryffindor Prince

Good questions. First and foremost, if you suspect you've got a dragon pox problem, I'd also recommend you go straight to the Healer or Professor Culloden and they can help you out. Doesn't hurt to get a professional opinion, right? But personally, I think like liking someone is scarier than having dragon pox. I've never had it myself, but I'd rather have it over like liking someone any day.

Just kidding. Mostly.

But really, LIKE liking someone feels a bit like... a tickle in your tummy, like a warm, fuzzy feeling every time you're around that person. A lot of the time you can't stop thinking about them or you can't stop smiling when they're around. They make you FEEL good, more than your normal friends, and you probably LIKE like someone if you want to spend time with them more than your other friends, too. I mean, think about all the things you'd want in someone you'd WANT to LIKE like - what's their personality like? And does the person you suspect you might LIKE like fit those things you'd like in a significant other? I think there's a whole spectrum of how we feel about people and it's not always a concrete thing of liking or disliking since there're loads of things you might like about someone and not like them. But I also agree with the above - if you really do LIKE like someone, you'll know.

As for them LIKE liking you, there's no way of knowing unless they outright tell you, unfortunately. It's best to not speculate about that kind of stuff because you might think someone who's being extra friendly to you likes you when they're really just being friendly and people are all different and have different ways of showing affection, so if you 're really suspicious and want to know, I'd say just ask them. They might deny it even if it's true, but at least it gives them the opportunity to open up to you and admit it, yeah? Best to just get that stuff right out in the open. There's plenty to gain by admitting feelings and hardly anything to lose.

Ravenclaw Princess

All, and I mean ALLL of my plants die in Herbology. What am I doing wrong?

miss NO!green thumb
Uh, maybe you’re just bad at herbology?

But uh, practice helps sometimes. I used to blow up a bunch of cauldrons, but look at me now! I get them right most of the time and Culloden doesn’t hate my guts anymore I think. So yeah, y’know… Practice. And you've got to be determined about it too 'cause plants don't grow overnight. Hogwarts wasn't built in a day, y'know? Or maybe it was... I might've skipped that chapter in the history textbook.

Hope that helps?

Gryffindor Prince

For starters, Professor Myers won't bite, so I suggest you have a chat with him and he can get you sorted out. But one thing to know about plants is that each and every one you'll deal with is different, which means they'll require different amounts of water and lighting as well as different amounts of soil and nutrients. Crack open your textbook and read up on each plant as you work with them and see what it says about each plant. You've got this.

Student Spotlight: Henric Nicolei
by Zander Adair

In the midst of all the panic surrounding the end of another term, Henric Nicolei is one badger who continuously strives to create a positive atmosphere for his peers. The Fifth Year’s spirit is much like a ray of sunshine, and his smile always remains bright and infectious. The Quill was lucky enough to sit down and speak to the easy-going Hufflepuff in order to understand his perspective on all sorts of aspects of Hogwarts.

I think I'm required to ask you stuff about school first 'cause I don't get to make the rules. So tell us, what is your favorite subject and what do you like about it?

My favourite subject is definitely Care of Magical Creatures. Mate, I can’t live without my dragons. They’re the best! I love it because I’ve always wanted to become a dragon trainer or possibly a Dragonologist one day. I also wouldn’t mind traveling around the world in search of them! Who knows, there might possibly be a new breed of Dragons that exist somewhere!?! I think it would be super fun and adventurous, don’t you? I’d really like to study more about them, in general, and all the other magical creatures found in the wizarding world today. I think most of them are brilliant! Well all of them except for the acromantulas. After last year’s attack… I’m not a big fan.

So you're a big fan of creatures, who would've thought!? Is there anything about them that you're especially passionate about?

Yeah, of course! I’m a super HUGE fan of them. I’m incredibly passionate about their care and wellbeing, too. I think we all need to spread awareness because not all creatures are being treated fairly. Say “NO!” to creature cruelty, guys! Treat them how we want to be treated! Respect their homes OR even, give them a home - unless of course they want to kill you, then by all means... do whatever - but of course only for self-defense!

You're a Fifth Year, right? How do you personally plan to survive OWLs this year?

Yes I am! Well, now that I’m studying for OWLs, I ‘occasionally’ follow a routine schedule set for myself everyday. I try my best not to procrastinate as much, but I can get really distracted playing muggle video games during my free time. It’s important to have a balanced diet, exercise, take an ample amount of power-naps, rest, listen to music, and find study buddies, mate. Special shoutout to my best friend, llia, and Hufflepuff prefect, Adi. They are my source of motivation to survive anything. Trust me. All those things can be achievable if you have a positive mindset. Who am I kidding?! Honestly, I still get anxious when I hear the word examination!

Is there anyone at Hogwarts that you’ve come to look up to or know to go to for advice?

Yes, there are plenty! First of all, I would like to show my appreciation for all my friends who have been with me throughout my current journey in Hogwarts, you know who you are. And, oh, that includes you, Zander. I think everyone looks up to you not just because you’re Head Boy, but because you are an amazing friend! Secondly, to all Hogwarts staff, Professor Airey and Professor Cassie especially, thank you for shaping me into the person I am today. Oh and pet rocks are brilliant! Please adopt one today if you haven’t, guys!

Okay, so moving on to some fun questions - Uh, I mean, questions not directly about schoolwork - In your opinion, what’s the best thing about being a Hufflepuff?

Best thing about being a Hufflepuff? Not having to climb up several sets of moving staircases everyday! Going to class is one thing, but I’d rather stick to the ground floor right after classes are over. Oh! And obviously, being near the kitchens! FOOD. Unlimited pumpkin pies all day, man!... And those unimportant things like having the best and nicest housemates in the entire school. That too.

Is it true that you badgers get to go to the kitchens to sneak food out whenever you want? I’m asking for a friend.

No, of course not! We don’t sneak. We share. There is a difference, my friend. Besides, if I tell you... I'll have to kill you... Or probably just tie you up and bribe you with cookies?

I'd be lying if I didn't admit to being a bit jealous. And now I'm getting hungry, so to wrap this all up, what’s your secret to being so positive all the time? I promise not to tell anyone, swear.

I’ve got pumpkin pies, we can eat that together later! Heheh! Aww, Mate, thanks. Well... I don’t think it’s a secret at all. Everyone has their up and downs. I believe that we are all strong enough to pull through it in our own way. Despite my appearance, I’ve been through stuff too... So I guess to me, keeping a positive outlook helps ease some of the burdens away. We’re not alone and it’s very easy to give up on yourself, but that’s okay...We’re not perfect beings. If you fall, get back up again. Like the saying goes, ”what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger,” right?

Professor Spotlight: Astrid Baxter
by Marsha Hanover

It is my honour to interview our lovely Charms Professor, Astrid Baxter, for you all today. Born and raised in Spain, Professor Baxter is an academic at heart, studying in Madrid after she graduated from Hogwarts. While she was a student here, she was a Gryffindor and managed to have lots of fun getting into trouble, even going so far as hanging off of the moving staircases! Though, she would like to point out that she doesn’t condone anyone else repeating her actions. She loves to let creativity flow, especially if she can use it in our ability to learn and master Charms. After my talk with her, I would suggest finding time to do the same, as she is utterly fascinating and has a love for knowledge and learning.

Hi! I'm so happy to have you here! What made you decide to come and teach us even though Hogwarts has quite a dangerous reputation?

Why, thank you! I am glad to be here. That is a question I am often asked, but it is simple, really. My passion is in education, and what is better than teaching in the same place I grew up in? It is both an extraordinary way to give back and to be in what used to be a second home for me. It also gives me an opportunity to help keep it safe.

Tell me about your past! What made you want to teach Charms? Have you ever taught it before?

My heart is in the education for young wizards and witches. Even as a child, I would set up my dolls and toys in a classroom setting and 'teach' them. Although, at first, I did not plan to teach Charms. I just knew I wanted to teach! I explored different university courses until I landed an internship in Charms. From then on I knew I wanted to teach the subject, and taught at two schools before coming to Hogwarts.

Is there anything we should know about your classes? Anything you do or don’t like your students doing?

Expect to be challenged and expect to work your creative muscles. One of my favorite things about teaching is how creative minds can be. And I do believe every single student is creative in their own way. It is a spectacular experience to witness such creativity.

What house do you support in the race for the House cup? Did you study at Hogwarts, and will that influence your support?

As a former Gryffindor, I'd be expected to root on my house, but I love a great race, in general, the way you cannot ever be sure who will take it home. It's great fun and my support out stretches to all four houses.

In terms of helping the school, do you having any personal interests that could come in handy?
In term of helping Hogwarts, I would like, along with my colleagues, to make it a place of fun learning. I know I cannot wipe out the recent unfortunate events, but I can help make Hogwarts feel like a safe place; a home away from home.

If a student needs your help outside of class time, are you available to help? Is that limited to only charms related matters or can we bring personal issues to you for advice?

Of course! The door to my office is always open for students. Whatever the issue is, I will do my best to help or help find support.

Charms are exciting and fun and great to learn in class… but what is your favourite Charm and why?

I would have to say it is the Patronus Charm. It is a challenging one to conquer, and I sure do enjoy challenges. Its best trait, though, would have to be the amount of positive energy it requires for casting.

If you could be a magical creature, which would you want to be and why?

An Abraxan. Can you imagine being a beautiful winged horse? I would soar the skies, especially at sunset.

When you need to relax, what do you like to do??

Rock-climbing is my go-to relaxing activity. Also hikes or a long nature walk. It's great for clearing the mind and getting a breath of fresh air, as well.

Last question! How do you go about grading classes and the homework we submit?

There are a lot of factors that play into grading classes and homework. I will say, though, as I mentioned before...I look for creativity rather than textbook answers.

Dear Quill Help Advice People, My boyfriend and I have been dating for 6 months now. The problem is he is a full year older than me and can do stronger magic. Whenever we get into an argument he uses this against me, making my homework disappear or casting a burning charm on my freckles. How can I get him to stop and yet still see that I care about him? I don't want to tell him or anyone. What if they think I'm weak?

Burning Freckles
Uh… no offense, Burning Freckles, but I think you’ve gotta dump the guy. That sounds kinda cruel. Like, who takes the time to learn a spell to make freckles burn? This guy sounds like a nightmare. Your boyfriend is mental. Just saying. But um… you can still care about him without needing to date him.

Hope that helps?

Gryffindor Prince

Merlin, what kind of boyfriend is that? A boyfriend should be someone who loves you and cares about you and who makes you feel safe and secure; not one who hurts you. What do you see in this guy? I mean, honey, I don't care if he's got all the galleons in the world or if he's the most handsome guy alive. Get out of this relationship as soon as possible, and if you're worried about his response and that he'll lash out on you even more, tell someone about this - preferably a professor - and they'll make sure he won't bother you again, all right? You're not the weak one - he is for being a jerk who can't handle his feelings in a mature way.

And Burning Freckles' boyfriend, if you read this, man up and take responsibility for your actions. Treat the people you love with respect and maybe you'll stay out of Azkaban.

My best mate's oldest brother works at the office for Experimental Prototype Magic (EPM) in London and in a recent conversation my best mate mentioned that there were ways around getting high marks in the O.W.Ls. I'm tempted to take up his offer, but I'm afraid of the consequences. Not of getting caught, but of losing the opportunity to actually learn something. And also I'm afraid my best mate will use these magics to help himself do well and also lose that opportunity for himself. How should I approach him? Should I even?

lover-of-knowledge
Okay, you used a lot of big words, but I’m pretty sure you’re talking about cheating, right? Don’t do it. Do you really wanna be known as the kid who CHEATED on OWLs? That’s a horrible legacy. Plus, once you get the scores back, you’ll know that you didn’t do them on your own and that takes all the pride out of it. Better to know that you tried your best and failed, instead of looking at some great score that wasn’t your own effort.

I’d tell that to your best mate, too. Of course, in the end, your mate’s got to make the decision for himself. Don’t cheat, kid. Just don’t do it.

Hope that helps?

Gryffindor Prince

The fact that you're worried about losing the opportunity to learn gives me hope for you, kid. More than anything, I'd hold onto that nugget of wisdom and use that to fuel you to make the right decision. What good is getting high marks on your OWLs when you didn't really earn it? And how are you going to explain to someone how you got a passing grade in a subject when you can't back up your grade with real knowledge? People will find out. I guarantee it. You won't be fooling anyone. So take it from me: put in the time and effort to pass your OWLs like the rest of us, and that'll the smartest thing you could ever do for yourself. I'm sure the temptation to make it easy for yourself is great, but we're not really in school to get good grades - we're here to learn and soak up as much knowledge as we can to be well-rounded, successful people.

As for your friend, he's going to have to make his own decision one way or another, but if you really care about him, you'll tell him just what we've told you. You don't gain anything by cheating besides some letters on a parchment. It's just not worth it.

Ps. No, no… I have not seen your turtle. Check the Chamber of Secrets? Lots of weird things hidden there.

Hope that helps?

Please help me. At what age is it appropriate to question your friendships with people as if they could be something more? And, on that subject, what about when that person is spoken for? I don’t really want to ask her to be my anything, but doesn’t being taken nullify the fact she thinks I have a nice face?

Yours,
Nothing to Declare
Love knows no age... Er, or something like that. I can relate to the second bit, though. It really stinks when the person you like is with someone else. But if they're happy, then you kinda just have to be happy for them... Y'know, as much as it'll hurt. But don't give up! You never know...

And I say, if she thinks you've got a pretty face, then take the compliment. She might even like you back a little bit.

Hope that helps?

Gryffindor Prince

Long story short, love is complicated. I don't think there's any right age that's appropriate to start thinking about this kind of stuff because everyone's different, and some people take longer to mature than others. I think if you feel like its time, then it is, so just follow your heart. If the person is already in a relationship, I don't think that necessarily means you should give up all hope. We're young, people change, people fall out of relationships. That being said, I don't think it's smart to try to make anything of it now. If you really might like someone as more than a friend, give them the time and space to work things out in their relationship. And if things fall apart, then that's a different story, but for now, I'd just lay low and not think about it too much. There's more to life than love and relationships, so let yourself live a little.

Also, if she says you have a nice face, it might not mean anything more, for the record. It's probably just the truth.

xoxo,
Ravenclaw Princess

Quote:
Dear Helping People,

I have a gold fish problem. I mean, when I see a goldfish game at a fair or at a pet store, I really have to have him.

As you can imagine...being away from my parents now at boarding school the problem has gotten out of hand. Every weekend I find myself in Hogsmeade and in need of a fish. I've been using disillusionment charms and undetectable extension charms as well as temperature controlling spells to help keep my filthy habit concealed. It's becoming unsafe as well. Once my dorm mate knocked over Herbiscus's disillusioned bowl and quite by accident, soaked his pajamas.

I need to stop collecting fish. But I just can't kick the habit. Any advice?
Uh. Y’know, when they told me I got this job, they never said I’d have to give any real advice. I’m not a professional or anything, but I think you need to get that checked out. Or might I suggest finding a normal hobby? Like knitting! Or you could always read a book. I heard our library is full of 'em. So there's bound to be something out there you’d like.

Maybe if you find something else to take up all your time, you can kick the fish habit? It’s worth a shot. And if not, we've got a healer here at Hogwarts... Just sayin'.

Hope that helps?

Gryffindor Prince

Erm. Yeah. What he said.

Student Spotlight: Damien Anderson-Belfort
by Zander Adair

Ladies and Gentlemen, it's with great pleasure that I take this opportunity to praise my good friend, Damien Anderson-Belfort. He's been a great dorm-mate this past year, but more than that, his genuine personality and compassion for his friends distinguishes this Gryffindor from the rest. Damien transferred to Hogwarts back in his Fifth Year, but even in this short amount of time he has managed to make an impact on the school and all those around him. I got the opportunity to interview him for The Quill and write down some of his final thoughts as he turns to a new chapter in his life and prepares for his days after Hogwarts.

Firstly, thanks for letting me interview you, Damien! I’m gonna miss you once we leave this place… So many great adventures we’re leaving behind, y’know? Speaking of which, what has been your most memorable Hogwarts adventure?

Hey, no worries, this'll be fun, yeah? Oh man, we've gotten up to a lot of crazy things. I think the most memorable, and most traumatic, was getting into the chamber last year with Evie. That was... not something I'd repeat again. And it definitely wasn't fun, but when I think of adventures, I think of that.

It’s three in the afternoon and you haven’t got class for another few hours. What can you be found doing and where?

Well, if I'm hungry (and I usually am), I'm in the kitchens cooking up something for myself. I love food, and I love cooking, and the kitchens are always so busy and it's... weirdly calming, in a way? Honestly, it's one of my favorite places in the castle.

Most people know you best for being a great friend and I can personally say that you’ve gotten me through a lot of rough patches and wake-up-calls. But how have your friends shaped your unique Hogwarts experience?

Literal wake-up calls, too. You've been there a lot for me too, man, and I don't say that enough. That's... a good question. I've made some of my best friends here. These are people I couldn't imagine my life without. I guess... I wouldn't have gotten into as much without them. I was waaaaaay more cautious when I first got here, but my friends always pushed me to test my limits. They've helped me broaden my mind, too; helped me find my inner lion. But y'know, it's funny because some of those people weren't Gryffindors. Like Evangeline Shacklebolt, who's the baddest witch of her age, and Cutty Mordaunt, who's... maybe gonna take over the world in the next five years... And Rorie Hazelwood. She was the biggest impact on my life, without a doubt; totally fearless and it rubbed off on me sometimes... if I was lucky.

Damien, did you know that you’re my favorite American? Boy, am I glad that you transferred here when you did. What would you say was the hardest thing to adjust to after transferring to Hogwarts in your Fifth Year?

You're flattering me too much, Zander! Sophie's gonna get jealous. Uh, hm. The food, for one. You guys have a lot of food us "yanks" would never think of cooking or trying. The obsession with Quidditch, too... We don't really care for it that much back in America, but you guys go all out, which is really admirable. I love diehard sports fans. I'm one myself when it comes to basketball and abraxan racing. Oh! And the slang; snogging, in particular, was hard to warm up to.

You’ve always been a real deep thinker, er, at least around me... Sometimes, I think you ought to have been a Ravenclaw, honestly. Where do you do your best thinking? Have you got a favorite spot on campus?

You really think I coulda’ been a Ravenclaw? I'm taking that as some serious praise. I do have a thinking spot. The Astronomy tower, specifically the observation room, is where I like to go when my head's feeling heavy. I like the quiet, the view, and Professor Airey is good about letting people just chill out there.

If I had a sickle for every time we’ve sat in the dorms complaining about NEWTs, I’d be rich. Is there one subject that you’re more worried about than the rest? Is there one that you probably won’t have to study as much for?

Maaaan, at this point? I'm worried about all of them! And I'm only half joking. But definitely Transfiguration and Arithmancy, those two kill me because there's so much theory and... I love theory, don't get me wrong, but sometimes my brain waddles through it. I'm pretty good with DADA. I'm... kinda confident about Potions now, too, but I've had a lot of help with that one.

So this last question is sort of an obligatory one because people are way too curious for their own good. Looking ahead, where do you hope to see yourself five years from now?

This one's the scariest one. I would feel more comfortable talking about my underwear, to be honest. Uh... I know where I'd like to work, and what I wanna do, but getting there is gonna be rough. I'm really fascinated by the outer branches of magic, stuff that isn't fully understood, and I'd really like to be working on that sort of stuff. Other than that... I dunno. Sometimes, I think I might end up moving back to Chicago or somewhere in America and just see where life takes me... Other times, I think about settling down somewhere in England, maybe having a steady job and a steady life, but I think I'd be bored. Really, when it comes down to it... I have no idea where the hell I'm headed, but as long as I still have the people I care most about in my life, I'll be happy.

Student Spotlight: Benjamin Atreyu
by Zander Adair

Earlier today, I got the chance to have a chat with my good friend and long-time roommate Benjamin Atreyu; more commonly known as 'Benny'. If you don't already know him, this Gryffindor is highly motivated and very hard-working. He puts his 110% into following his passions and if that's not something to covet, then I don't know what is! After rooming with him for my entire Hogwarts career, I can say with confidence that Benny is moving on to big things in this new chapter of his life. And luckily, he had some time to answer some questions for me so that all of you could hear about his future aspirations, too!

Benny, it’s been a real adventure rooming with you all these years and getting to know you as a friend. Can’t believe it’s almost over. I wish I could just relive all the old memories, y’know? Speaking of which, what has been your favorite Hogwarts memory?

Same here and I certainly know... There are quite a few exceptionally happy memories I wouldn't mind reliving. So hard to chose, but I suppose flying on the transfigured dragons for that joint lesson is certainly at the top of the list.

I guess since I’m already running with all this sentimental stuff, I might as well continue. What will you miss most about the castle?

The Gryffindor common room, and the cozy welcome feeling it always provided. That, as well as, the stables and barnyard where I felt most in my element around creatures.

After spending seven years here, you really get to hear from so many insightful people. What has been the best piece of advice you’ve gotten whilst at Hogwarts?

To go for internships over the summer, which was advice given to me at the beginning of Fifth Year by Professor Thompson. It was a great hands-on experience.

Shifting topics a bit here, classes at Hogwarts have got a knack for being really unique. Which has been your favorite lesson from all your years here? And Why?

It would have to be a Care of Magical Creatures one. Taking care of the little dragons on our own and training them. It helped solidify my plans after Hogwarts.

Your plans after Hogwarts, eh? Is there something in particular you hope to do with Creatures, then?

I'm planning to work with and care for dragons after uni. I'll be attending Wizarding University in Edinburgh to get my degree in Magizoology and we'll see where that takes me.

Even though we’re about to end our Hogwarts journeys, some others are just beginning theirs. What’s one piece of advice you’ve got for the underclassmen?

Do what you love and don't be afraid to follow you heart and dreams. It might sound sappy, but if there was anything that made me the most happy, and will continue to do so, it was working with what I enjoyed to the fullest. Whether it was studying creatures, or flying, or anything else... Do it... Rregardless of others or fear.

After seven years of classes, friends, mentors, and good food, it’s pretty clear that Hogwarts has made its lasting mark on us. But here’s your chance to say one last thing to the school. Have you got any last thoughts you’d like to share before we wrap this up and go grab lunch?

Just remember to live every minute. Seven years goes faster than you'll realize.

Student Spotlight: Evangeline Shacklebolt
by Sophie Brown

A shining star in the class of 2088, Ravenclaw Evangeline Shacklebolt has made her presence known during her time at Hogwarts as a wrecking ball of fire and brilliance. Her spirit, spunk, and ambition are incomparable, and if you're looking for a dynamite role model, you heard it here first: Evangeline is the best around! This angel so graciously blessed us with her time for a chat about her favorite things, her future beyond Hogwarts, and some inspiring wisdom she would like to pass on!

Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us, Eves. First and foremost, we'll start with the burning question on everyone's mind: d'you have any beauty secrets you can share with us? I mean, it's no secret that you are the self-proclaimed "Head Babe" of Hogwarts, and for good reason, if I may say so myself. D'you have any advice to offer to us little people in this area at which you excel beautifully?

Thanks for choosing me for the questions! Well, I take good care of my body, basically (besides eating, 'cause I love comfort food). Keeping your hair and skin moisturized is the most important and basic beauty tip for anyone, boy or girl. If you style your hair, finding high-quality products that don't damage your hair is important for keeping your hair healthy. As far as makeup goes, I like to keep it simple and keep my face looking natural. Sometimes a good bit of eyeliner doesn't hurt.

As if the Hogwarts student body couldn't be jealous enough, you've got impeccable brains and wit to blow us all out of the water. We've all seen you dominating in classes, but which of the many are your favorite classes and what makes them so special to you?

As some might guess, my favorite class is Defense Against the Dark Arts. As an aspiring Auror, I like learning more about defense tactics and how to make spells more powerful. So, Charms is another favorite, but I hate learning about theory. That part bores me.

Let's go a bit deeper. What makes you happiest? A broad question, but an important one.

Well, my answer's a bit cliche, but my family and my friends. The people who love me and support me no matter what. I don't know what I would do without that love.

Everyone has fears, even those who appear to have it all together. If you were facing a boggart, what do you think it would turn into?

My biggest fear is failure. I don't know how that would come as a boggart, but I'm terrified of not being good enough or not reaching my goals or disappointing someone I look up to.

Naturally, as your dormmate, I love the Sorting Hat for sorting you into Ravenclaw house, but do you think the hat got it right? Is there any other house you think would have equally felt like family to you?

I feel at home in Ravenclaw. I have friends in other houses, but I know I just wouldn't fit in quite as well anywhere else than Ravenclaw.

We'll dive into a few favorites now. Favorite spell? Favorite food? Favorite place in the whole world?

My favorite handy-spell is the hair drying spell! It makes mornings a breeze, especially when it's hard to make yourself get up and get ready. In dueling club, I'm particular to the duplication spell, making clones of myself. It's fun to throw your opponents off and really confuse them.

Graduation is looming. What do you think you'll miss most about Hogwarts?

I'll miss all the crazy adventures. There's never a dull moment at Hogwarts and it makes life quite interesting. I'll also miss the beautiful grounds. I've spent a lot of time outside, it's just so perfect and relaxing out there.

A young woman with spunk and passion like you must have quite a future ahead of you. What are your post-graduation plans, both short-term and long-term? Where can we expect to see you in five, ten years?

After graduation, I plan on attending the university in Edinburgh, studying Magical Law. In the Winter, I'll be joining the YATI program as well, so I'll be pretty busy from there on out. In five years, I see myself successfully training to become an Auror, if I'm not already one. I'll have my degree by then, as well. I'll be protecting the wizarding world.

Think back on all the memories here at school that you hold dear, from wacky classes to adventures with friends to simple chats with professors. Does one, in particular, stand out? Do you have a favorite memory you would like to share with us?

This is a hard one... I have a lot of good memories here, and a lot of them stand out. I'd have to say that they're all my favorite, even the bad ones. They've shaped me and helped me really grow up. I'm grateful for my friends and for everyone who stuck by me and loved me for who I am.

And lastly, what advice would you leave behind to those not graduating with us? What have you learned from your experiences that you think is an important life lesson to share?

The most important thing I've learned is that it's really up to yourself if you want to be happy. If you have dreams, go for them. No one has the right to tell you that you can't do something. If you want it, go get it. Do what makes you happy, it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks.

Professor Spotlight: Beatrice York
by Marsha Hanover

To finish off the term, I am proud to present our new Transfiguration Professor this year, Beatrice York. It was a privilege getting to talk to her and finding a little bit more about her; a Hufflepuff alumni who went on to study at the Wizarding University of Edinburgh. Having tutored for the last eight years, she is looking forward to the challenge of teaching us and spreading love and appreciation for transfiguration. Growing up with one sister, who was also a Hufflepuff in the same year, Professor York has a deep love for playing the cello, autumn, baking, and Quidditch. Do try not to shout in her classes though as she doesn’t like loud noises and people who are rude.

Hi! Welcome to Hogwarts! It’s so good to have you here especially because I get the opportunity to learn from you. Hogwarts is often known for being quite dangerous, so why decide to teach here?

Well, thank you, dear. It's so wonderful to be back! I would never have thought I would be able to see the beautiful castle again once I left, but here I am, and I'm very happy. That's lovely to hear, and I hope we can learn from each other. Well, I think everywhere one goes has the chance to be dangerous, and Hogwarts was my home for seven years. I feel safe here, despite everything that happens.

What can you tell me about your past experiences in teaching? What got you interested in Transfiguration?

Well, right from my very first lesson I fell in love with the practice. The ability to transform the properties of one thing into another was, to me, the very meaning of magic. I found it challenging, but I was good at it. I enjoyed it. I can't say much more, really. It was just something I was very interested in right from the very beginning. As for teaching, when I graduated from Hogwarts I went on to study Transfiguration and thought I'd like to try teaching. So, I went back to get a degree in education and from then until now, I spent my time tutoring people. Mostly younger children, aged 5-11, before Hogwarts, but I tutored a few Hogwarts students in Transfiguration during the breaks.

What is the best transfiguration spell that you know? Why do you like it, what does it do and how could we learn to use it in everyday life?

Incendio, which conjures fire. Conjugation is the branch of Transfiguration I enjoy most, and I think Incendio is a very useful spell. So long as we can conjure fire, we can keep warm and fed, which is the reason I believe it is a most important spell to learn.

Did you study at Hogwarts when you went through Magical school? What house were you in, and are you going to support your ex-house in the points race?

I did, I was there from the year 2067 to 2074, and the sorting hat placed me in Hufflepuff. I think I'll always have a soft spot for Hufflepuff but as a Professor I... I will support everyone, and every house, hopefully equally.

What personal interests do you have outside of transfiguration?

I play the Cello, and I love classical music, which I often play from my Gramophone. I also enjoy baking, so keep your noses working down the corridor! Besides that, I enjoy reading, travelling, being outdoors, practicing spells, animals and... plenty more of course.

Can students talk to you outside of class time even if they won’t want to talk about transfiguration?

Absolutely! I always look forward to getting to know all of my students, during and outside of the class. I can also add I have a constant supply of sweets.

Transfiguration has been hard for me to learn so far… How do you plan on helping us learn to love Transfiguration like you do?

I'm sure you'll be unsurprised to hear that many struggle with the practice. It's quite a challenging area of magic. But it's absolutely true that I love transfiguration. I plan to make it interesting, easy to follow, and FUN. It will be challenging, of course, but I want to minimise that. People don't love what they don't understand, what they can't comprehend.

Who are your favourite Quidditch team and have you ever managed to see them play live?

Pride of Portree are my favourite team. I've seen them play a few matches live, and they are just marvelous!

If you could only eat one flavour of ice cream for the rest of time, what would it be?

Could I create a flavour that changes depending on what the eater wants? No? Hmm, chocolate!

Will classwork continue to be a big part of your lessons past this point? Or will you lean more towards homework activities in the future?

Being Transfiguration, I'm afraid both, along with homework, will continue to weigh quite heavily. Students will need to learn the spells and theory in class, then practice and revise for homework. I would like to see classwork be the bigger part, as I can observe students, correct their wording or wand movements, give tips, and generally help. Homework is purely in the student's control, though, however, I will always be reachable for students if they need extra help or pointers outside of the classroom.
