Welcome to your first duel.

This is the first step of determining your standing in the HexTournament, and more importantly, discovering who you are as a dueler.

Each dueler is expected to adhere to all DADA Classroom rules, Dueling Club Rules and SS site rules.

Spells may be used from the following List. Any spells on this list are not permitted unless approval has been granted.

Physical actions and their costs can be found below:

NOTE: Fatigue points ONLY need to be used when you are physically attacking someone, or avoiding a spell. All other maneuverings around the hall do not need to be accounted for.

Text Cut: Cost of Physical Actions
  • Roll: 5 pts
  • Sidestep: 5 pts
  • Duck: 5 pts
  • Jump: 5 pts
  • Dive: 5 pts
  • Climb: 10 pts
  • Punch/Kick/Physical Attack OR Defense against physical attack: All points remaining are lost
  • Physical Inanimate Object Damage: 10 pts

A referee (Professor Flamsteed or Dakest) will be assigned to your duel and present. They will only interfere if there is need, including foul play, serious injury or unacceptable or illogical use of spells.

OOC: Each duel must be completed by no later than October 24, midnight GMT-6 (OOC). Remember that a duel ends when one dueler has lost ALL magic or ALL health points. Please make duels a minimum of 3 posts each.

These first duels will be a trail run of sorts. The point system for the spells and physical actions was done by thought and hasn't been tested. You all are the guinea pigs. Let me know how it goes If you find that there are be difficulties in the weight of points, please let me know. If there are spells missing you think should be included, please let me know.

If you have questions, please ask. Also, if for some reason you cannot complete or start your duel, please let both me and your partner know. We will work something out.

Remember: duelers MUST keep track of their own points as they go. At the top of their post (in the tag line) they must include their current standing of points, as they are at the BEGINNING of that post. At the bottom of their post, they must include a 'spoiler' tag, including the spells which they've cast (and the directionallity of the spell, so the opponent can easily reference the potential damage to themselves), the spell(s) that have affected them (if any) and their own final Point Standing for that post.

And so it was tournament time.

Zeke was dressed in his dueling robe attire, suitably padded and protected in places that needed protecting. Furthermore, his wand was clean and polished for the special occasion. On the one hand he was a little nervous about facing an older opponent, Kyroh would be a force to be reckoned with... he would have smarts for sure. That being said, Zeke didn't think he was out of the running completely, especially if he played to his strength with charms, and remained nimble. Being caught flat-footed and unprepared was not on his list of things to-do today.

Upon being called up for his match, Zeke took his position and faced off against the fifth year. The numbers did not work in his favour, but he was still hopeful. As far as tactics went, he was aiming for consistency and intensity, with emphasis on consistency. There was no point in going hard from the start, that would only burn him out.

Standing to accord, Zeke showed his respect for his peer by bending at the waist and bowing, all the while his eyes were still locked on his opponent. "Don't hold back," he insisted, a faint smile notable beneath his determined expression. He respected Kyroh enough to not look away, he was one that needed watching, because he would be good. Right?

But it was game on.

The second the duel began, Zeke shot off his first spell, pointing his wand toward Kyroh he called out "Obscuro!" before quickly following it up with a Jelly-Fingers Curse.

Duelling time.

DUELLING TIME!!!!

Kyroh was all set, padded robes on, and wand out at the ready even before their names were announced. ZEKE! He was going to be facing the Gryffindor. And Gryffindors were crazy! Weren't they like natural born duellers because they didn't really care much about what happened to them? Wild right? It was Kyroh's assumption and he didn't really know if it was a good one. Zeke didn't seem that wild. Scrambling to his feet the moment they were called he took his position.

Technically because he was a year ahead he had a better chance than the other boy but....still. "Don't worry. I won't." He grinned back as he bowed, eyes locked on Zeke's.

He already had a plan.

Nice. Easy. Simple. He gripped his wand tight and waited.

The second the duel began Kyroh raised his wand, but Zeke had already opened his mouth.

It happend so quick that Kyroh couldn't really wrap his head around it. Without thinking he skirted to the right, narrowly avoiding the spell. ""Protego!" He yelled loudly deflecting the boys own Curse back at him.

Dear Zeke: Wobbly fingers return to sender!

He curse was barely blocked before he flourished his wand again. "Locomotor Mortis!"

If there was one thing he learned in all his time around law enforcement types, was that one should never remain stagnant in a conflict, or more to the point, in a duel... or when someone was out to kill you. Kyroh was not out to kill him, but losing was as good as death in his eyes. So when his curse returned to him (and such a nice curse it would have been, HILARIOUS right?), it didn't take much effort to dodge it. Zeke managed to side-step it - in a lively manner. Game on, Scabior. He was ready for you.

It would have been foolish to think the Ravenclaw would leave him enough time to get in another shot, so when the leg-locker curse was announced, he reacted in the best way he knew how. "Protego!" he cast, the shield charm absorbing the hit, he really hadn't had the intent or momentum to deflect the curse... talk about wasted opportunity.

At this point, he was already lost. Strategy has officially left the building, and so while he was experiencing this inconvenient brainfart, he opted to try to bide himself some time. As such with immediacy, Zeke cast "Steleus!" in the Ravenclaw's direction, the green rings of the hex inspiring some confidence in him as he flitted to the side. Always on the move.

Sorry these things weren't outlined clearly before....
  • 1) If you are using non-verbal spells, be be advised that they cost an additional -25 magic points on TOP of the cost of using that spell. Please clarify whether a spell is non-verbal or not.

  • 2) If you cast a spell, or try, and it fails for your character (as in YOU RP it not working) point loss still occurs for the attempt to cast (think of the energy a wizard/witch has to expend trying to do magic)

  • 3)Also, don't worry about putting a point tracker at the top of your post. Please just (in the title of your post, put Health, Magic, and Fatigue points at the START of that post (so whatever they were ending at the last post and BEFORE any spells hit or other spells are cast)....

    i.e. Post A ends with 20 Health, 5 Magic and 0 Fatigue --> please title post B with the same. (Just makes for easier point tracking :3)

  • 4) Fatigue points are ONLY depleted if you are doing a physical attack or maneuver to defend against an attack. Duelers can move about freely, jump on the spot and so forth, so long as they aren't actively defending against an attack or doing an offensive attack

Kyroh bounced on his feet, ready for whatever came his way. It wasn't just about who was better at spells and charms. But who was quicker, who could best analyze his opponent. Could he analyze Zeke? A blindfold to make him unable to aim....tickling to make him unable to aim......so his whole thing was-Kyroh raised his arm about to attack once he realized but maybe the whole, analyzing Zeke thing had distracted him because before he could get anything out a spell hit him square in the chest.

"Aa-aaaaaa-aaaaaaaaaaahhhh-CHOO!!"


Annnd of course sneezing to make him unable to aim.

"AHHHHCCCCHOO!!" Violently sneezing, Kyroh racked his brain. Didn't he have a plan before? He did! It had been so clear something with simple. He could do something simple! He just had to stop sneezing. OROR TIME THE SNEEZES OR just-

"AHH-ahh-aahh-" Kyroh sneezed again and thrust his wand at the floor right at Zeke's feet, finding just enough of a break to utter a Smashing Spell. "-CHOOO"

As his nose wrinkled up again he flicked his wand quickly "Stupefy-AHHHCHOOOOO" He would like to stop sneezing VERY much, right now. His nostrils felt like they were on fire.

Watching as Kyroh was struck with his hex, Zeke couldn't help but grin. SUCCESS! He COULD do this. And Merlin was it funny. He took a brief moment to admire his handy work, appreciating the humour in the Ravenclaw's incessant sneezing. It would be awful for sure, so he was glad it wasn't him. But he was foolish to think he had won just yet. The duel was far from over, and in the time he had wasted idling around basking in the entertainment he had created... his world was rocked. Quite literally.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
The explosion at his feet sent him flying backward, landing hard on his side, "Ooooooomph!". While the impact hurt like a troll, he didn't think anything was broken, but there was certainly a graze on his cheek. Sheesh. WHAT WAS THAT FOR?! Did Kyroh really just try to blow him up?! He was almost sure that it was the sneezing that had put him off his aim, because that was too close for comfort. TOO CLOSE AND NOT COMFORTABLE, KYROH!

Pushing himself off from the ground, Zeke managed to roll out of the direct line of fire from a haphazard stunning spell and onto his back, just in the nick of time. Wand trained on Kyroh, Zeke sent a Trip Jinx at his target. The floor was nice, Kyroh should join him.. only, Zeke had zero intention of laying around like a sitting duck, so quickly he used his arms and legs to propel himself upward and he skipped to the side. Erratic movements helped, no?... just maybe not his head, which was throbbing a bit.

The sneezing had let up, and Kyroh's nose no longer burned like someone had sprinkled an entire pepper shaker into his nose. Thank Merlin, Morgana and their secret baby.

The best thing about being upright while Zeke was having a lovely time on the ground, was that he for a small time, had the upper hand. Literally. "Protego!" Kyroh said loudly, deflecting the jinx right back. Zeke was already used to the floor, so, why not? Plus maybe going back down would help him remember how to walk like normal and not like a crab.

Kyroh skirted around, mimicking Zeke's crab moves while at the same time staying on the defence. "I think we're doing really good." The fifth year laughed gleefully. "I also think-Slugulus Eructo!"

Honestly, Zeke was getting a little frustrated with the deflections... but it couldn't be helped, he would just have to adapt and deal with it. At least he wasn't caught off-guard, so he was quick to defend himself with a, "Protego!" His shield charm absorbed the impact, and he was moving again.

They were skirting... circling... it was weird. Like they were both prey and predators, and he just had to hope he wouldn't end up being the prey. Losing, wasn't an option.

He cocked his head to the side as Kyroh spoke out. They were doing a great job? Maybe. But he didn't much feel like conversing right now, duels were not for casual chats...but then he was distracted again. Also think wha--? Oh.

BAM!

He was hit.

And for the briefest of seconds, he thought he would be okay... until....

HUUUURGGEHH

Standing with his wand held out in front of him, he was confronted with the pain of expelling slugs from his mouth. Only, it wasn't just his mouth, they were in his throat, and it made his stomach squeamish. Slimy, thick and writhing... they continued to flow, he was a human fountain of slugs and slime... and it was DISGUSTING. There were actual tears in his eyes as they continued. He hunched over slightly, but tried his best to keep his wand up and his eyes open. His best might not be enough.

"Bleeeuuurrrggghh!" ....... "Bleeuuurrgghh!" ... "BLEERRRGGGHHH"

This was not going to plan. Not. At. All.

Zeke tried to keep moving, the odd slug falling from his mouth as he did so, and the wrenching in his stomach intensifying every so often as he moved. Head held high - or at least as high as he could given the situation - he hoped that perhaps he might projectile a slug in Kyroh's direction. Dude deserved it.

BULLSEYE!!!

BULLSEYE! The moment spell took off and Kyroh felt GOOD about it. Really good. Not so good when Zeke's cheeks blew up and a giant slimy gross slug erupted out of his mouth.

.....huh...that's what throwing up slugs looked like. Squishy. Squish.

He sort of wanted to poke one.

But NOOOW was not the time.

Now was the time for bad stuff, like Zeke's face as he threw up.

And what was even WORSE than the slugs or his face, was the sounds he was making. Wrinkling his nose he focused back on the DUEL. More importantly Zeke's wand.

It was held high, or at least somewhat, but it didn't look like he was gripping it too tightly, which was understandable considering the fact that he was throwing up slugs. The fifth years face blanked for a second, suddenly a combination popped into his head. Without any warning Kyroh jumped over to his right, and then his left before opening his mouth"Relashio! Tarantallegra!" The spells left his mouth in quick succession, no time to think for YOU Zeke. It was eassssssy a flick to Zeke's wand and then to his legs, Kyroh could NOT be more pleased with himself.

If you haven't, and are considering them, these are the new rules for Expelliarmus and Stupefy. See the Q & A thread for more details

SPOILER!!: Expelliarmus
  • Expelliarmus: Disarms the target (of whatever they are holding) and can be used to knock-back a target if cast forcefully enough
    • Caster Points:
      • H: 0

      • M: -15 (ONLY if spell disarms caster of wand)

After Blaise Bellaire was knocked-out with a stupefy spell, it has been banned from the club. Reason for this is that the Tournament Duels are supposed to help students practice dueling, and having a K/O isn't the best way to do this. Therefore, Stupefy will be a spell permitted only in practice sessions and Challenges, as per the new point system:

The slugs were still coming, but they were smaller now and becoming less frequent... though it didn't stop him from continuing to belch them up, one by one. "BERUGGGHHHH"...

It had been difficult to keep himself upright, and while he had managed to keep his wand at least somewhat trained on Kyroh, there was little he could do to defend or attack with slugs filling his mouth. Words would not be forming. Not coherent ones at least, and he wasn't about to risk a spell backfiring on him at the minute.

... "Blerrruugghhh..."

Slime was slick against his lips, but wiping it away was the furthest thing from his mind right now. No amount of rubbing could take his discomfort away, and it wouldn't make much difference until stopped anyway.

Kyroh was going to make the most of this opportunity, he knew that much, he had known that much from the second the spell had hit him successfully, so now he had to be creative.

Without words, his magical ability was hindered, so when he heard Kyroh begin to utter an incantation (what it was for he didn't think was relevant) he did the only thing he could do. He dived out of the way. It wasn't just one spell though, so even as his body hit the floor, he swiftly rolled away from where the spells would impact. Distance was desirable.

Stopping on his knees, Zeke was quick to push himself upright, spitting out a mankey looking slug in the process. "Blleeeeehhh," he cringed, spitting on the floor around him a few more times. Somehow he'd managed to bite down on that one... and it was NOT pleasant.

But forget that, it was time to turn up the heat. This wasn't over. Kyroh managed to get a couple of good shots in, but it was high time he hit back. Cheeks puffed out as if he had another slug to expel, Zeke swiftly cast "Incendio," at the space in front of Kyroh's feet. It would make for a good distraction if nothing else.

There were two things that Kyroh could say for sure, for SURE about Zeke.

One; he was really good at throwing up slugs. Almost a pro really. He would have thought of it as a fantastic feat...if he wasn't the one who casted the spell and if Zeke didn't look so....gross while doing it.

And two, the boy was quick. The Gryffindor had been ready for the spells, diving and then rolling out of the way of both of the potential things that could cause him a bit of harm. He was so quick in fact that it was like he had an extra set of eyes. Four eyes? Perhaps? Kyroh jumped around again, ready to attack when a ball of flame came hurling out of nowhere towards his FEET!!!!.

WHAT THE HECK ZEKE?

FIRE!!!

Jumping backwards just in time, the fifth year could only stare, hard at the spot of the room that was now on FIRE and THEN at the other boy and THEN back at the fire, as if he were distracted. But Kyroh was very much aware, this was a duel okay? Fire happened, he wasn't that shocked. Wand raised and ready, he didn't say a word as suddenly a Confundus Charm went ricocheting right at the others boys chest.

On the one hand, he felt like he was fighting a losing battle. But on the other hand, he also knew that he wouldn't be pitted again Kyroh in this tournament if there wasn't a possibility for him to win. Somehow Kyroh had managed to miss most of his attempts so far, but the Ravenclaw had to run out of luck eventually, he refused to be the only one chucking up slugs or being knocked to the ground. He had hope, determination and plans that he thought were grand... it was time this got real.

Having created some time with the fire distraction, Zeke successfully wiped most of the sluggish remains from his mouth onto his shoulder, and took the opportunity to give himself a bit of an edge by casting the Feather-Light Charm on himself. Instantly he felt as though he'd shed half his bodyweight, and was able to move more freely - which he continued to do so by ducking and weaving and changing directions while Kyroh's wand was trained in his direction. Whooops, which direction? Hooooooop! Moving!

Though Kyroh's charm had been nonverbal, which had surprised him somewhat, he had also recognised that SOMETHING was coming for him when the wand had flicked in his direction, which gave him barely enough time - even as limber as he was - to defend himself. "PROTEGO!" His shield charm went up in the nick of time, and his intent to deflect Kyroh's attempt succeeded, sending whatever the spell/charm was, back to his opponent.

And while that was happening, Zeke shot another "Incendio!" to the space at Kyroh's side. He wasn't intending to hurt the Ravenclaw, but he certainly was aiming to distract him and give him the task of putting the fires out.

Light-weight as he was, He continued to bounce and skip from side to side, erratically so that he couldn't easily be targeted.

His eyes were burning. Really, really badly.

The fire from before was starting to make them water water. Squinting, Kyroh coughed into his sleeve, as the smoke rose high up into the air. He took a few steps back again and coughed more. It was almost impossible to keep his eyes on Zeke with the smoke and them burning. Sighing he pointed his wand at the fire, "Aguam-!" As something bounced back Kyroh cut himself off, dropped to the ground and rolled out of the way of the deflected spell.

It was easy, go down and roll right over to his right side. But he had NOT been paying attention to Zeke's second spell, and how it had been aimed right at the area that he had decided to roll-

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!"

The fifth year's screams bubbled up, and his eyes watered as a searing pain took over, the flames clinging to his robes on his right side. Writhing in pain, he gasped, trying to extinguish the fire that now CLUNG to him.

Fire was great, he knew it was great, and he knew it was effective. It was what his mum would use. BUT... what he hadn't considered, or at least - not really, were the possible ramifications of using fire. Such as: you're opponent actually CATCHING on fire.

Kyroh's scream affected him greatly.

It was... awful.

He hadn't intended for THAT to happen, and all he could think to do, was to help put it out.

Without hesitation, Zeke performed the Extinguishing Spell to quell the fire on his opponent, and followed it up with "Aguamenti," for good measure. No harm done, right? Swallowing hard, Zeke refrained from approaching the fifth year. This was still a duel, and until the end or a break was announced, he would continue to be on high alert.

But really... was the dude okay?

It had been a good duel thus far. A duel he didn't think he needed to have many concerns over. Even when fire was involved. It was a fair spell, as long as no one went and lost their hea-----

The noise that came from Scabior completely nullified that thought. His wand was in his hand, though the spell didn't come right away. Why? Not because he cared to watch any of his students burn, but because there was a disconnect from the noise with the immediate danger. The uniforms were relatively damage proof, though that's not to say fire wouldn't eventually make it's way through. Though, not all the fifth year was covered, and even the very idea of being on fire was mortifying. He knew.

All those thoughts took but a second to tumble through his head, and in the next second water was shooting from his wand ... to combine with water from Browne's wand. The fire already out in that first second.

His gaze slipped over to the fourth year. Definite props for the kid. Though, the look on the boy's face was almost as concerning as the fire had been. He'd have to talk to the kid later. For now, he turned his attention to Scabior, moving closer to the edge of the dueling arena in case injury had occurred. "Scabior?"

The boy's response would determine whether the duel was called right then and there.

No, nevermind that. The grandfather clock was tolling and by that indication the duel was done. By the indication of the expressions he was seeing, the duel was most definitely done. A slow breath left him. Would it do to cast a gold spark for the winner, after someone had been burned? Likely not.

Sabel let out another slow breath. "Congratulations Mr. Browne, you are the winner of this duel." Knocking out an opponent by fire was a sure way to go, though in the grand scheme of things, due to the kid's kind-hearted casting the two students were on nearly even grounds of points. Still, a call was a call.

"Mr. Scabior, how about we take a walk down to the infirmary." Zeke, of course, was welcome to come along.
