Image by: Pixie The Greenhouses are all kept neat and tidy by Professor Myers. Each one is evenly spaced out in their residing spot outside of the castle. There are five greenhouses, all of them done up to Professor Myer's idea of organization, which carefully follows past organization of the greenhouses with just a few changes. The air is a little crisper out here, students.
Greenhouses one through three are open to student aid and experimentation. If you're careful and confident, you can feel free to tend to the Venemous Tentaculas in Greenhouse Three or engage in a playful tug-of-war with the Devil's Snare in the Greenhouse Two. If you traipse through each greenhouse, you will identify almost every sort of magical plant that has ever been taught at Hogwarts. Bubotubers, puffapods, fanged geraniums, biting toadstools, flesh-eating shrubs, and so on..... and that's not even mentioning the assortment of Muggle flowers in Greenhouse One!
Each greenhouse has little shelves for cute or ordinary pots, as well as racks of tools and any other necessities you may need in the large corner cabinets. There's plenty of lab tables for setting up your own tinkering station, and sinks to clean up in too. Don't forget to add to the compost pile behind the greenhouses when you're done with your trimming!

It hadn't taken Daxton long to realise that there was something very useful to him down in these greenhouses. He'd read through his textbooks already, multiple times, ever since he'd first got them. He knew what kind of plants were likely housed here (if they were listed on the curriculum, logic dictated he would find them in the school greenhouses), and he knew, in theory, how the plants were handled and cared for. And since Daxton had arrived at Hogwarts, his thoughts had zoned in on the topic of Mandrakes.
Or rather, not on the Mandrakes themselves, but the equipment required to handle them. Earmuffs. You needed earmuffs to remove a Mandrake from its pot or you would die (it was fascinating, really, wonderfully morbid), and yet earmuffs were not on the supply list. Ergo, they would probably be supplied by the school. Ergo, Daxton was likely to find them in the greenhouses, and one greenhouse in particular.
He slipped inside Greenhouse Three now, having been keeping an eye on the area for a while from afar and not seeing the Herbology professor as yet. Ideally, he had wanted to be sure the man was elsewhere about the school, but it wasn't as though the Greenhouses were a suspicious place to be. Daxton had grown bored of waiting around, and so here he was.
The plants in the Greenhouse Three had an instantaneous effect on Daxton's allergies, and he felt a small twinge of pain flair in his sinuses at once. His eyes began to sting and sneezing was surely imminent, so Daxton didn't pause even for a beat as he crossed to the supply cupboard and began sorting through it, blinking hard all the while.
Earmuffs... earmuffs... where are the- aha. Gotcha.
They were all completely ridiculous designs, none of which appealed to Daxton. He picked out a blue pair, with a 'Huh?' design on either side, and quickly shoved them to the bottom of his schoolbag. The deed was done, and it was easy. Now he could be on his way.
Daxton turned on his heel and headed for the door again. But his allergies got the best of him, and not a second later he stopped and broke into a chain of three successive sneezes. Quiet 'kitten' sneezes, but loud enough to make him unhappy with this sudden development. It was almost as bad as talking.
Stupid allergies. Stupid stupid.

Paul was making his usual rounds on all of his Greenhouses. He had to make sure everything was running smoothly, plants were being watered...all that fun stuff. Since it was still so early in the term, he knew there'd be few students wandering around out here.
He had juuuuust gone through the first Greenhouse and was on his way to the second one...when he heard what sounded like a...
A TRAPPED KITTEN IN GREENHOUSE THREE?
Paul had no doubt in his mind that THAT was what it was! He raaaaaced to the Greenhouse and FLUNG the door open, only to run into.................this child. This child whom Paul had no name for. He grabbed the boy's shoulders, frantically. "Did you hear a KITTEN in here!? I thought he was trapped! I heard the mews! Have you SEEN it?!"

If the door being suddenly flung open had startled Daxton (and it absolutely had), that was nothing compared the the actions of the man that had burst through it. Already having stopped dead in his tracks, Daxton stared at the crazy man who flailed his way inside. A crazy man he recognised as the Herbology teacher.
Aside from the fact that this was a frankly alarming situation, Daxton probably could have let it go (he was starting to get used to the concept that everyone in the magical community was completely and utterly bonkers). Could have, might have, if not for the fact that...
.......... the man had him by the shoulders.
Neither knowing now caring what said man was going on about (kittens? literally who cared about kittens?), Daxton tensed right up, feeling almost as though a jolt had gone through him at the point of contact. A second later he was shoving the teacher-man-professor-idiot away from him out of pure reflex, an alarmed expression gracing his features. Anxiety levels were high.
Personal space. Had nobody in this world heard of it?
Daxton quickly took a step back, eyeing the man, quite prepared to grab the nearest potted plant and use it to fend him off. He signed instinctively at the man, 'Don't touch me or-' but was broken off by the distraction of another sneeze... and then another.

Paul let go of the boy when he shoved him away--he was much too concerned with this apparently trapped KITTEN in here. But then...
The boy sneezed.
And Paul knew. It was no kitten! It was the BOY. Paul's instincts went into overdrive, and he peered at him curiously...and concernedly. "Are you okay? You seem sick....have you taken potions? Do you need any? I have plenty extra--oh dear--" he pulled out a little package of tissues still wrapped in the plastic. Paul had a fondness for Tweety Bird...what a cute muggle show...from a long, long time ago. "Here. You need more than I do....I'm Professor Myers, by the way--" he smiled broadly and waited. "I'm glad to see some students taking an interest in the Greenery."

The day of the boats, Daxton had taken a long time to recover from being manhandled by the idiot groundskeeper, because it had been a stressful day, and then proceeded to be a stressful night. In contrast, he was much calmer today, in a much better position to keep his cool, like usual. It helped that the teacher had immediately let go of his shoulders, but all the same... Daxton had decided he did not much like him.
Especially when he kept peering at him, making Daxton take another half-step backwards, feeling massively uncomfortable. Why was he looking at him like that? And when was he going to stop? Daxton did not so much as look at the man's face, but took the rest of him in all the same, shrugging his shoulders in an attempt to shake off the lingering feeling of being grabbed like that. It was not working so well.
Wasn't this the one he had seen wearing a poncho at the feast?
It was impossible to non-verbally answer the copious questions rattled off without giving himself neck strain with all the shaking and nodding, so Daxton didn't even try. He just stared at a point somewhere off over the man's shoulder, waited for him to stop talking, and did his best to hold back more sneezes that were threatening to make themselves known. His eyes continued to sting and water, thanks to his remanining exposed to the plants and pollen in the greenhouse.
... What... the heck... was that? Daxton eyed the packet of what was presumably tissues, blinking at the juvenile design. Did the man think him a five year old? Did the man think himself a five year old? He made a face and waved them off; Daxton could look after himself. He didn't need anything. So shut up. He sneezed again.
The last statement, in Daxton's mind, didn't require an answer. He didn't realise he was expected to respond with his own name, and he certainly was not about to correct Professor Myers (Professor, really... all these teachers seemed a little full of themselves to use such a title) on why he was here, so instead he just continued staring at the man. And his smile.
Why was he smiling like that? What was so funny? Why was he laughing at him?

The boy was very quiet. Stark white...and his eyes were hiding something....he couldn't place what. Hmm. He nodded as the boy waved off the tissues, and shoved them back in his pocket.
"Well...you seem to be....nervous now that I've shown up. I'll leave you to it--or were you leaving? I hope you feel better, m'boy--" he said with a smile, again, and looked on into Greenhouse Three. "What's your name? Just so I can start remembering? It's hard being new, you know--you must know--" he said softly, because he could TELL this kid was a first year. He'd also seen the lot of them come in from the boats...taken note of a few of the faces.

Oh? Oh really? Did he seem nervous? After being grabbed and manhandled for the second time by a teacher at this school, this time by one ranting and raving like a crazy man about endangered kittens?
Shocker.
While the Herbology teacher rambled away at him, Daxton focused his attention on straightening out his a-little-too-well-worn uniform that had somehow managed to get all untidy in the grabbing debacle and his own haste to get away. Another sneeze escaped, and Daxton was about five seconds away from giving a growl of frustration. He used his sleeves to wipe at his stinging eyes and looked back at the Herbology man... professor... teacher. Herbologiser? Herbologist? Was there an appropriate term for him other than 'absolute dingbat'?
Right. His name. Daxton could provide that. He opened up his school bag again - being careful to mostly conceal the contents and hide the stolen earmuffs - and extracted his notebook. Opening it up to the first page, he held it up so the man could read the name written there: Daxton Prince.

The first thing when the boy pulled out a notepad...to tell his name, was that...well did the boy have any hear problems? Or speaking problems? But Paul was never one to make huge assumptions like that. Assumptions made fools. So he didn't say anything, but merely nodded, as if this were a normal occurrence.
"Ah. Daxton Prince...well..it is so lovely to meet you, Mr. Prince." He smiled and resisted the urge to ruffle the boy's hair...since he seemed sort of...inward and introverted. Paul was picking up on some VIBES from this one..."I should..let you be going, then. I hope the rest of your day is better--and that your sneezes go away! Wouldn't want to get sick so early in the year!"
He was already concerned for this child. >.<

Daxton kept his notebook out; more to avoid opening his bag up and risk revealing the ill-gotten gains that were in there than because he intended on furthering the conversation with this man.
Lovely... to meet him? Daxton doubted that, judging by the other reviews he'd received about the non-pleasure of his company. But he didn't argue - of course he didn't - just gave the teacher-man an uncertain nod, unsure of his motives for lying.
And then he sneezed again. Twi- no, three times.
This was getting ridiculous.
After recovering from that bout, Daxton nodded at Myers again (because he did remember his name, and should probably start to use it), and moved around the teacher. Well out of arm's reach. Once he had half-circled him, so that now he was between Myers and the door, Daxton turned and took his leave without so much as a wave of goodbye.
Crazy plant man. Daxton could only imagine what Herbology was going to be like.
And... perhaps he ought to find some allergy relief before then.

Boy was getting sick. Paul should have recommended he see the Healer--Merlin, he was going to get everyone sick! Worried worried WORRIED, he was.
As Mr. Prince fled the Greenhouse, Paul didn't think to take inventory of his earmuffs--the thought hadn't crossed his mind, and nor did he think anyone so sneaky as to steal anything from the Greenhouses, that he simply...was oblivious to the fact that his student, Daxton Prince, has just left with some very nice earmuffs.
Hmph.

Sophie waltzed into Greenhouse #1, the same place in which her Herbology class took place recently. Time for some homework! She loved the greenhouse and the plants and herbology! She looked around the room, looking for the pre-made composts. She was supposed to try and decipher WHAT the pre-made compost was composed of. Hmm.
Randomly grabbing one, she took it and sat down on the floor with it. Summoning a spade, she pulled on her gloves and started digging around. Who knew what she would find? Could it be carbon, or nitrogen that it was primarily composed of? Maybe it was even one like she created herself! This was going to be fun! Though, she did wish she had a friend to chat with in here.

Hady slipped into Greenhouse #1 quietly prepared to get a start on the lessons homework. It really shouldn't be to hard after what they had just accomplished in the lesson. All she really needed to do was figure out what was inside the already made compost. Simple enough.
Locating the crates of pre-made compost she selected one for herself along with a blank card. She'd need that to write her findings on. Grabbing herself a spade as well Hady went to an empty area on the floor and sat down dropping her bag beside her. Setting the crate at her feet she then removed her gloves from her bag and tugged them on firmly before carefully using the spade to push around through the compost.
It wasn't to hard to do seeing as nothing had decomposed yet. From what she could tell there was some grass, slightly brown but still mostly green. A little more digging brought up an apple core as well. Not to bad so far. Using her gloved hand she pushed some of the compost to the side of the crate so she could dig down deeper trying hard not to inhale to deeply as she moved around the manure that was on top. What type it was she wasn't entirely sure of yet.

Good morning!
It's a good day to wake up and enjoy the fresh morning air. Ava wrapped herself into her coat and then walked to the greenhouse. She remembered that Professor Myers had posted about the homework that they had to dig a compost that they had made. Okay, it's gonna be gross but she didn't mind with dirty stuffs thankfully.
Entering the greenhouse #1, The young lioness looked around and it seemed like she was all by herself here. Whuuuuuut???? But hey, this greenhouse would be hers at least until.... someone's here. Humming a cheerful tone, she picked a random crate. She put on her gloves and grabbed a spade then started digging on the compost! Lucky that it's not really decomposed for now so she could recognize some material there. Maybe she should start writing on the card now.

Time to get started on that Herbology homework! Adi arrived at Greenhouse one in his usual cheerful mood but his nose all wrinkly at the fresh smell of manure. "Best get used to it, Adi,'' he told himself as he pulled his gloves on. "You're going to be working with creatures for the rest of your life, aren't you?'' Mhmmm.
He immediately spotted the crates him and the other students were supposed to be working with and randomly went to stand in front of one, the fresh manure odor high as ever. He eyed the card next to it. Right. Writing! Adi had momentarily forgotten they were supposed to do that but he HAD brought a quill with him since he had actually remembered before he came here to the Greenhouse. Gloves went off As he labelled the card with the starting off information:
Awesome!
Now Adi could actually get started on this. The gloves were pulled on again. Yep, he had opted to use his hands.

Sophie waved a glove hand at the other students who had filed in shortly after herself. Most likely doing the same as she, Herbology homework. Why else would they be rummaging around in compost? Must be hungry heeheehee.
Swinging her attention back to her compost, she poked around at the manure and against her wishes, took a deep breath to try and figure out the type of manure used. Cow, definitely cow..ugh! she noted that for she would have to write it down on her card later. Next she picked her spade back up and went to poking back around, when she unearthed a layer of moldy bread. Ugh!!

Taking off his scarf as he entered the Greenhouse, Yoongi folded it up and put it in his school bag as he walked towards a working station. Although he had not really enjoyed the class, too dirty for his liking, he still wanted to keep up with earning Gryffindor some points so here he was~ Before he started his work, he grabbed a crate of compost and took out his pink flamingo quill to write down his name, year and house on the label in front of the crate.
Placing the quill in his bag, he placed it next to him on the ground after grabbing his gloves. So how was he supposed to do this? First he needed a small spade though, so he waved his wand and non-verbally summoned it towards him. He had gotten pretty good over the past few months. But only with charms, he was still horrible using non-verbal spells at classes like transfiguration. Catching the small spade with his gloved hand, he dug in to the compost.

Another day. Another walk. Another completely coincidental run in?
Only time would tell, but seeing as his pet rock had wanted to take their stroll into the greenhouses today...well...it was entirely possible. Giving Pebbles' pink leash a gentle tug to pull her over the threshold with a dull thunk, the Astronomy professor breathed in the greenhouse air for....huh...was this the first time he had been in here since taking up post as Astronomy professor?

Digging around in the crate with the small spade, Yoongi breathed through his mouth as he smelled the compost and tried to find out which kind it was. It kind of looked like the knarl one he had used in class. Yes he was going to go with knarl… ewww. He placed down his spade for a brief moment to write down his findings on the cart before he forgot.
After he had written that down, he grabbed his spade when in the corner of his eye he saw Professor Flamsteed entering the Greenhouse. Huh? Why was he here? Had Professor Myers asked him to watch them? And why couldn’t he come himself? Questions popped in his mind as he dug in the compost and found an orange peel. Oooh~ disgusting~ He would write down his findings when he found a few for now he would just dig and keep the Professor in his view.
It had been months since the floating lesson and Yoongi was slowly starting to trust the man again though, so he wasn't occasionally looking over because he was wary but just out of curiousity. Should he say a hello or not? His spade flipped over a couple of pine needles and he placed his spade down to write down his findings.

Spade in hand the fourth year continued to push the materials around as she was able to come across some teas bags. With some further expecting and deeper digging she found straw near the bottom and then the soil. That seemed to be it. Well alright then. Using the spade and her gloved hand she shifted the material around a little bit and then lightly patted them back down making a face as the smell of the manure hit her once more. Cow. It had to be cow. GROSS!
Sitting back on her heels she laid the spade down by her feet and with her hand she hadn't used to dig with pulled out her wand casting a very good 'scourgify' on her hands, gloves and the spade. Once things were clean she took out her quill so she could write down her findings on the card.

Merlin. "Hello Professor!" Sophie smiled happily, "are you enjoying a nice stroll today? Is this your pet?" She motioned towards the rock with the pink leash. Hogwarts Professor's were definitely an interesting bunch!
Digging back into her compost, she discovered some tea bags and pine needles as well as some apple cores. Almost down to the bottom she finally found some twigs as well. This compost was definitely unlike the one she created, that's for sure! Sophie still needed to write down her findings on her card, but she was nearly done!

Officially the digging had commenced!
Adi was wrinkling his nose even more now as the odor of the compost rose. Well, it was mainly due to the fresh manure. Speaking of the manure... He shifted a bit closer to the crate, studying the contents. Unless he was mistaken, this was surely cow manure. Yep! Indeed it was! He quickly slipped off his gloves, to add this information to his notes. Now that part of the identifying was done, it was off to take a look at the other materials. Dig, dig, dig!
Let's see...
Tea leaves... and newspaper! Woot! So far so, good! Adi just needed to update his notes now. | |

Sophie pulled out the card from earlier and began to write with her quill, Quote:

Yay! She was very nearly done. But first! Sophie waltzed up to where the ickle wormies were squirming around and she grabbed a few to add to the compost. Then, she went around and watered a few of the composts with a watering can. May as well, right? Sophie cleaned up the area in which she was working and sat and relaxed for just a bit.

With her card fully written out Hady once more checked it over just to ensure she hadn't missed anything. It was all there and done neatly. Perfect. Tucking her quill away back into her bag and returning her wand to the holster on her wrist she was nearly finished here.
Rising to her feet she left her bag on the floor for now and returned the spade she had used to where she had gotten it from. Returning to the compost she had been working with she picked up her gloved and pulled them back on then picked up the container carrying it across the room. Reaching into the container of wiggling squirmy worms she grabbed up a few and dropped them down into the compost. There.

It wasn't the most exciting homework in the world but Blaise wouldn't complain because it was yet another reprieve from magic. The boy could get behind this--unlike that stupid topiary race where everyone had to use wands and they didn't have snippers. The Professor was nice enough to provide little spades and a task that was easy peasy.
"Did'ja get any notes on Carbon and Nitrogen stuff?" He asked his cousin as the two entered the Greenhouse to get the task done.
See...he MEANT to take the notes but then he...got...um...so distracted by how...brilliant the Professor was that he just didn't have the time and it didn't get done--'least that's how his quill would be telling the story and it sounded like the sort that would keep him in the man's good books.
"I'll take this crate and you can have that one." Blaise grabbed the closer and less gross looking crate. Now where would they do this? The corner? Over there by those tables?
