Default Astronomy Lesson 1 :: The Moon {formation theory & tides}

The first thing you may notice as you step into the Astronomy classroom on this especially sunny afternoon is that Professor Flamsteed is no where to be seen. Is this another test your constant vigilance or is the man uncharacteristically running late? Which ever the reason, you best find a seat among the large semicircle of desks and follow the instructions on the blackboard that read:

Quote:
Take out a quill and write your FULL name and year on the piece of parchment provided.

Once you have done so, give it a tap with your wand.
The parchment, enchanted by the professor himself, will turn into a sturdy wood name plaque when you do so.

Did you remember to use the lint roller on the small table outside of the classroom? It was there next to the sign that reads, "Not to be used as a brush for your hair" and has the signature of a former student in the bottom right corner.

So come on in and have a seat. Class will begin....well...as soon as the professor graces you all with his presence.

Lesson Progression
question 1 :: KABOOM! What was all THAT about?
question 2 :: Why is the Moon important? Do you think the Earth be fine without its existence?
question 3 :: What do you know about tides?
mini activity :: BE THE MOON! Sort of. In an abstract sense.
main activity :: MOVING OUT!
main activity :: house vs house sandcastle battle instructions
OOC: This is IC your character's FIRST Astronomy lesson of the term.

Please be sure you are familiar with Professor Flamsteed's rules BEFORE you post in this lesson. We will know if you haven't read them! All SnitchSeeker site rules apply.

Class will officially begin in approximately 14 hours from the time of this post.

This lesson has officially started! Please do not announce your character arriving late and just pretend like they have been in class all along. You are free to jump in any time and should use the lesson progression links to keep up.

Marsha's eyes went wide and she threw her head forward, covering her head with her arms crossing her head. As she closed her eyes and cringed, she waited for the impact. OH MY GOD!!!! HIDE!

....

But apart from something soft bouncing off her arms nothing else happened. Slowly straightening up right, Marsha raised a hand to rub at her forehead where she had banged it off her desk plague. Ouch. Frowning slightly, the red head tried to focus on something that wasn't moving so that she could stop feeling dizzy. Dizzy and moving planets or asteroids or aliens or worlds or WHATEVER that was, wasn't helpful.

When she got over the dizziness, she looked behind her at her very own Head of House! Wasn't he SO cool? "IS it demonstrating the left over effects of your actions?" The Welsh first year asked looking back at the things in the ... air. "'Cause it looks like they are still angry." Well.... it was worth a guess.

Duck and HUUUUUUUH?

Just as Zander turned back to face the door he took notice of flying space bits coming towards his desk. BLEGH. Merlin. At least it was squishier than it looked? It could've at least hurt, but Professor Flamsteed was careful enough even with his dramatics. Anyways... First question already?

Eh. Zander would sit out on this one. There were tons of eager firsties, maybe it'd be good to let them have a shot, y'know? Get all there eagerness out. Zander's guess would've had something to do with meteors maybe. 'Cause meteors always sounded relevant.

A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.

If it wasn't obviously enough, Natalia loved astronomy. Both of her parents were astronomers of some type: one astrophysicist and one astrobiologist. Of course, Natalia was just as interested in the wizards' view of space. It was going to be FUUUN! FUN FUN FUN!

Natalia was sitting eagerly at her desk in the front corner of the room when the professor arrived with all his props.

WHOA HUGE PLANETS WHEEEE.

WHOA HUGE PLANETS COLLIDE WHEEEE.

Natalia's hand shot up in the air immediately. Then, realizing that she was the in the center of attention in the classroom, Natalia started to shift slightly in her seat.

"Was that a demonstration of how the asteroid belt was formed, professor?" Natalia saw some basis of evidence. "The large sphere was Jupiter with a large gravitational field, pulling the smaller 'planet' to its orbit. The smaller one eventually collides with the bigger." The Lion might sound like she knew what she was talking about, but Nat wasn't certain if that was what the professor intended to demonstrate. "The collision broke the smaller planet into different pieces, which started orbiting around Jupiter." Nat thought she should conclude her answer. "Then tada! Asteroid belt." *BEAMS* Should she dance?

Lux giggled at Eden. "But I liiiiiiiiike hugs." Especially boyfriend ones. They were her favourite! Friends hugs were amazing too.

Hugs for everyone!!

Figuring that Flammy was going to arrive, Lux thought it was best to get her notebook out. That was when the THING arrived. And then another came right after. Whooooooa. That was so COOL. The redhead wanted to applaud because magic was so freaking amazing that she couldn't even handle it.

"That was stellar, Professor!" she called out after the BIG BANG. The reason why Astronomy was one of her favourite classes was because he always made the lessons so much fun. Thinking about the question for a moment, she raised her hand. "Was that to show how asteroids were formed?" She didn't really know much about asteroids, but it was a good guess in her opinion!

Lance was actually oblivious to everything going on at first. He was too busy inspecting the newly made and awesome plaque HE created only moments before, right up until some whizzing noise caught his attention-

Oh. My. Merlin. WHAT...were those...rocks...

The Gryffindor jumped in his seat when someone shouted, his arms coming up to cover his head instinctively from the given order. The crash! Goodness to Merlin, the crash. Flinching, he curled his feet under his chair, only peaking up from his arms when he heard the professor speaking again. What was that all about? What was THAT all ABOUT? He...actually would've liked to have known that too. It was cool display for sure, though caught him off guard. The adrenaline coursing through him made him twitchy.

Having no answer for the Professor, he poked and fiddled at his plaque instead, making sure it was perfectly center on his desk and visible for all to see.

be curious, not judgmental

...Nothing happened when she did the spell. Which was GOOD, but... y'know. A little disappointing, because she'd WANTED to show off on her CONSTANT VIGILANCE to Bunz. At any rate, it was okay, and Soph relaxed visibly as she sat down where she always sat - right near where Tobes always sat, duh - and did the whole name plate thing as the board told them to and tapped it with her wand. Alllllllll set.

Lots of shiny, happy faces entered after her and acknowledged her in one way or another - Echo, Janelle, Norah, Eden, Dot, Cinna, Benzi, Stella - and Sophie grinned and greeted them all right back. Zander didn't acknowledge her, so she made a mental note to throw something at him when Flammy wasn't looking. It was only right, really.

Sophie was getting her class materials organized upon her desk and tucked her galoshes under the seat when THINGS HAPPENED. What... even...???? Duck and cover? DIDN'T NEED TO TELL HER TWICE. The Ravenclaw heeded the warning and dove under her desk, peeking through her arms to watch debris fly everywhere. A mad man, Flammy was, and when the coast was clear, Soph slipped back into her seat, stifling giggles.

It was fun, okay?

Rather than answering the question, Sophie collected a handful of the debris and poked at it curiously on her desktop, taking notice of how squishy it was and not hard like a rock, the way she'd anticipated it would be. What kind of crazy cool magic was this anyway? How did he make all of that happen? Could he teach HER?

As always, when she was too distracted to be engaged in the discussion, her answer was, Whatever Tobes said. He was always right anyway.

Rule number one, always be vigilant in Airey’s class. All them first years and transfers should take down notes. The moment the sphere rocky thing appeared before them, Ethan had gathered his things and readied himself to bolt out of the door. However, Flamsteed’s unmistakable voice echoed from the hallway, and Ethan simply did what they were told. Come on. Big rocky sphere, and whizzing sounds? Of course it spelled out danger somehow. The crash and boom sounds were heard, and some of the debris ended up in Ethan’s hair. Let’s just say that even if he took cover, he just can’t fit underneath his table. He’s officially not a kid anymore. Yep.

Brushing off the soft chunks of ‘rock’ from his head, Ethan got his things and nameplate and transferred seats beside Josie. Of course he didn’t miss her entrance. Hi, Josie! Placing his nameplate upside down on his desk, Ethan raised his hand to answer. “Probably one of the many theories on how Saturn got its ring?” Well, stating the obvious...obviously.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

Yoongi had been admiring the large sphere while waiting for the Professor (who was LATE by the way, they wouldn’t have accepted this at Charms School!). The sudden shout coming from the doorway to duck and cover startled him so much that he hadn’t jumped out of his chair to take cover on his own. He had literally fallen off it in shock just in time as another CRASHED in to the first one. He held his arms over his head to protect his hair…his face was important too but his hair was top priority at the moment… And felt the bits of rocks falling on his arms but he was surprised that it hadn’t hurt.

The Gryffindor looked up from his hiding place and saw that the debris was circling around the larger sphere and he found himself staring at the beauty of it again. Finding out that the voice who had shouted was the Professor himself, Yoongi straightened his tie and sat back down. What was that all about. “Well, to give me a mild heart failure but that’s probably not the answer you’re looking for....Professor” He did not like unexpected things to happen that were loud. A few years ago he would have cried under the desk but he was older now so it was just shaking hands. “Maybe you wanted to show what happens when two planets collide?"

Please don't get frustrated with him for being a fifth year. He never had astronomy in Charms school...

Zhenya had been watching the sphere, floating up above. But it didn't do anything, so for a few moments, Zhenya continued doing what she had been doing before; looking around the room. But… she heard a whizzing, and looked up again, slightly alarmed. What would happen when the two spheres collided? She was just watching, thinking surely no explosions or anything, when Professor Flamsteed shouted from the doorway. Duck and cover. So she ducked under her table for cover, though she wanted to see what would happen. Safety first, though. It didn't matter that she didn't see, because from under her desk she felt a slight heaviness on her back, and saw some fragments float down to the ground.

Zhenya popped back up from behind her desk as she heard Professor Flamsteed speak. The large sphere was still there… She smiled a slight giggle at his announcing statement, noticing, like always, the impeccably dressed Professor.

The seventh year was rubbish at Astronomy, though she did try to improve. So, not really understanding what had happened, she raised her hand anyway. After all, what was the harm in a wrong answer? "Professor, my mind says it's obviously some kind of demonstration of two space objects colliding. It could be the collision of a star between… a comet or something." It was hard for her not to answer that question with a question, but doing that would only be second guessing herself. Which she was doing but… a guess was just as good an answer as a paragraph straight from the textbook. Or so she believed.

Penelope looked up at the rocky sphere that had appeared. Was that supposed to the moon, or perhaps a planet or an astroid. She did not have any more time to think about why it was there and what it was however, because her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of Professor Flamsteed shouting duck and cover. Not questioning the order to duck and cover, Penelope immediately ducked down under the desk and curled up on the floor, covering the back of her head with her hands. She didn't look up until she heard Professor Flamsteed speak again. Reluctantly, she crawled out from under the desk and sat in her seat again. It still seemed like it would be safer under the desk. What exactly had that been? Penelope hadn't been able to see everything that happened when she was hiding under the desk, but she had a general idea of what had happened. "Did that represent an asteroid colliding with a planet?" If that demonstration was any indication of what the class activity would be like, she was in for a very dangerous lesson, possibly the kind where she would get hurt. Why was it always her in Flamsteed's class?

In spite of the order to duck and cover, Dot wasn't interested in getting out of the line of fire. She wanted to be able to see everything, after all, and her decision paid off. EXPLOSIONS. PELTING STONE THINGS. It was all so so so exciting, and she got a first hand, front seat look.

Did she know what StarMan was trying to show them? Nope. Not in the least. Did she care?

Not at ALL. It was still exciting. "Maybe you're making us a moon, sir. I mean... eventually. They have to come from somewhere."

Oppsie. She totally did tap her wand on the parchment and it turned into a pretty name plate. Shiny. And was this a sign that class was starting now? A spherical thingy. She eyed it from above her head. What the....? A hissing sound and a small round thing showed up. Then there was Airey shouting DUCK and COVER.

And that was exactly what she did. She ducked her head and threw her arms over her head.

*Bang*

Starting off with Big Bang that a understatement.

She sat back up at the desk and listened to the professor. "Ummmm testing our reflexes?" Really, though. Duck and cover? "The universe, and how it was created?" Aka the big bang.

A little more heads up next time, eh?

What did that represent? Reasons not to get on the Professor's bad side obviously. What kind of teacher HURTLES giant dangerous rocks at each other with barely any warning?

Ughhh there was stuff in her hair!!!! After all the craziness Echo found out that the Professor was now here, and he brought along a very loud bang and crash with him.. Getting up from her chair she adjusted her name plate and looked around to see some people giggling at the action that was happening.

Echo brushed her sleeve off and held up her hand "Professor was that to show us of like gravitational pull... and if a planet or moon gets pulled into another planet's gravitational pull it can crash?" she hoped that she didn't sound to silly and she really hoped that the Professor knew what she meant, because she wasn't fully sure she understood herself.

What was that? Hayden's conversation with Norah stopped abruptly as she turned her attention fully to the mysterious object in the sky. What was it? Was it dangerous? Hayden regarded it warily, ready to move if it every showed malicious intent. Was it making a hissing noise? Nope, that was another mysterious orb.

Hayden did just as Flamsteed said without even pausing to wonder where he had come from. She was beneath her desk in seconds. Just seconds later, the two orbs crashed into each other and debris went flying. None of it hit her, thank merlin. But Hayden looked around to see if anyone had gotten hit. Wasn't that dangerous? Why was Flamsteed allowed to do that to children? Hayden hard Margo's yells but it turned out that she wasn't actually hurt. They must have been magically made out of some material that couldn't actually hurt anybody. Oh good.

Oh no, Hayden was not coming out from underneath her desk. What if another one of those things came back? And was actually dangerous this time? She could attend class perfectly well from under the safety of her desk thank you very much. It did post a problem with raising her hand, however. She waited for a pause in the answers where she could make her own input.

"Is it like two planets from space who slam into each other because one got in the way?" Was that a thing that happened? Hayden didn't really care. That's what it looked like had just happened so that's the answer she was sticking with.

In just enough time for you to get under your desk, the smaller sphere CRASHES into the first, sending bits of rocky - but surprisingly soft and squish to those who actually get hit with some of it - in various directions. The debris that does not propel itself towards desks results in a disk of orbiting material around the large sphere while the smaller sphere has seemingly, well, gone completely KABOOM.

And is it just you...or has the spinning of the large sphere....slowed down a little? Perhaps it is just the shock of a collision playing tricks on you.

Looking quite pleased with himself despite the obvious dark circles under his eyes from lack of sleep, the Astronomy professor picked walked by the table holding the lint roller - failing to notice the change on the sign for now - and shut the door behind him. "Nothing like starting the term off with a BANG, I always say," he chuckled as he strolled to the front of the room and stood beside the blackboard.

"Hello everyone and welcome to Astronomy. For those of you who are new among us, I am Professor Flamsteed - although you may call me Professor Airey if you prefer. If you all could please take your seats and cease all side conversations so that we may begin properly that would be absolutely stellar." Yes? Thank you.

"Now," he said, clasping his hands together rather dramatically while he bounced giddily in place. "Just what was all THAT about, do you think?" he asked, gesturing towards the above sphere and all the floating debris around it. "Oh yes, name plates where I can see them."

So he could actually call upon new students by their names rather then "you" or "that Ravenclaw" or what have you.

OOC: Class has officially begun! Please do not post your character arriving after this point unless you are willing to accept any IC consequences that may occur

You do not need to wait for Professor Flamsteed to call on your student to answer, just go ahead and have your character raise their hand and assume that he has done do. Remember, wrong answers count just as much as correct ones, so do not feel like you HAVE to be right. Let your character speak for themselves and get creative!

Got a question? Please do not hesitate to VM or PM me. Or if it is IC go right ahead and ask it of Professor Flamsteed.

Class will resume as soon as I get the chance to reply to everyone - most likely in 24 ish hours.

"It always feels good and.........natural to use magic." She replied to Henric with an even bigger smile. Natural, yes that was the word she was searching for. She wondered what that was like at home for him and was beginning to ask, when she saw the floating objects begin to appear.

The entirety of their presence was intriguing as was the ensuing explosion, albiet a bit loud , it was rather theatric as the chunks flew. She shielded her face with her left arm and some little bouncy , possibly rubbery bits bounced off. Now that......was an entrance. A loud, ostentatious entrance....he certainly had their attention!. What was it about? She had a few theories, and listened to other students making guesses. In her opinion, because while she wasn't bad at astronomy it also wasn't her most brilliant class, perhaps he wanted to get a reaction and have some fun? Watching your students halt and jump awake was probably entertaining she could imagine ,on top of probably having something to do with one of the students theories. Her hand raised politely, but her mouth ran the show on this one. "Professor, Is that how baby pet rocks are made?" Ilia asked with a sweet, genuine looking smile. Yup, she enjoyed that answer, yes she did. Hopefully, he did too. Everyone else had a scientific theory or was complaining about a heart attack or some rot, her answer was every bit as legit.

But he knew who Flammy was. So. Obviously he had gone here and Eden was just SUPER NOT OBSERVANT of the other houses O_o

She shrugged in his direction. "It's always a hoot, though, whatever he does have planned," she said, and she held out her hand. "I'm Eden, by the way--" nice of her to introduce herself, really.

OH OH HUGS from Lux--OKAYOKAY--Eden patted Lux's back and just snorted. "Lux...Lux...we can hug after class...silly puffer thing." She teased, smirking over at the redhead in a cheerful way. SEEEEE? Classes were making her feel a lot more NORMAL and BETTER about all the things. She didn't even care that Gabe was here. IN FACT--WHOOH, Gabe was here. That meant RAVENCLAW power.

See?

Eden could play nicely.

And Benzi. Benzi was here. Benzi, whom she didn't know how she felt about, Benzi. Benzi, Cutty's friend---ahahahshqwiudhiuqhdih. Eden just waved back at Benzi with her eyebrow cocked before---

SHE ALMOST FELL OUT OF HER CHAIR.

WHAT EVEN, FLAMMY.

The Irish girl probably mumbled something....under her breath, but when she realized it was just Professor Flamsteed employing his usual shenanigans, she took a deep breath. Okay.

And no, Eden had no idea what it was. But she raised her hand anyways. "Things going...BOOM." Yep. Eden McGee was brilliant. This was a brilliant answer.

The Ravenclaw actually literally and completely HATED that Astronomy didn't come naturally to her... >.>

Well that was certainly true, Flamsteed was well known for his theatrics. Michael grinned at the Ravenclaw. "It most certainly is." He said as he leaned over and took her hand and gave it a small shake. "McGee right? Eden McGee" He remembered. "Michael Toussaint."

Before he could say anymore to her, the theatrics began. Of course he didn't need to jump under his desk and place his hands over his head, he still had his protective shield around him.

Once the show was over and the question was asked, Michael raised his hand. "Could be two stars colliding or perhaps an asteroid crashing."

Sarah thinks I'm cute | Shan's safe space.

Another name plate shoved to the front of his desk.

Another name plate that he doubted was readable. And another weird start to the first lesson. Dalton cowered slightly as the banging thing happened, brushing warm debris from the sleeves of his robes, and looking around anxiously to see if it was bloody well safe enough for him to emerge from under his desk.

Was the Professor trying to kill someone? Or just scare them enough that they would NOT be returning to the lessons?

Effort, Dalton.

Rolling his shoulders slightly, and twisting his pencil in his hand as he sat back down, the twelve year old just shrugged in answer to the first question. He didn't know what that was about, how could he? Wasn't that why he was here, to be TOLD stuff? To LEARN?

Default the grey text is happening over the course of Professor Flamsteed speaking <3
astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf

As you sit waiting patiently - or not so patiently - for your turn to speak, the debris over head continues to float around and seemingly orbit the large sphere. However, if you pauy attention carefully - which is understood may be difficult considering you are trying to multitask by paying attention to your classmates and the professor - you will notice that some of the debris begins to move closer to one another and….hmmmmmm...begins to coalesce?

Have no fear if these changes would have changed your answer just now. The movement is subtle enough not to notice right away and having to pay attention to so many things at once, well, you were bound to accidentally over look something.

Not correct, but not entirely wrong either. Although quite far from the answer he was looking for. "An excellent train of thought, Mr. Zeke. But what you just witnessed was a small scale model of an astronomical phenomena with 100 million times the amount of energy than the event believed to have wiped out the dinosaurs."

Just some food for thought.

It was no mere asteroid!

Surveying the semi circle of desks, his blue eyes fell on the Ravenclaw and....he just sort of nodded.

"FUN FACT!" he said, pointing at Miss McGee right between the eyes. "In order for there to be a proper BOOM, meaning sound, there must be molecules to vibrate. HOWEVER, in the large empty areas between stars and planets, there are no molecules to vibrate and thus no sound."

Which probably had very little to do with what she had actually said, but he just had to share.

"Also, Miss McGee, stellar article in the Quill. Pebbles, Boulder, and myself thoroughly enjoyed it."

The Lion might sound like she knew what she was talking about, but Nat wasn't certain if that was what the professor intended to demonstrate. "The collision broke the smaller planet into different pieces, which started orbiting around Jupiter." Nat thought she should conclude her answer. "Then tada! Asteroid belt." *BEAMS* Should she dance?
Airey was quite impressed and even paused for a moment to give the young woman a polite golf clap. "That is a very well thought out theory, Miss Woolf. HOWEVER, that is not how the asteroid belt was formed according to astronomers. While Jupiter DID play a role, its role was not one in which it caused one planet to collide with another, but that it's gravitational force prevented all the bits of dust and rock from coalescing into another planet. A planet that, had it been able to form, would have been possibly been able to form a planet nearly four times the size of the Earth."

Oooooooooh so close. But not entirely incorrect either. "A very good educated guess, Mr. Mordaunt," he applauded the Slytherin. Who, by the way, it was nice to see back. "While very true that Saturn's rings were formed from comets, asteroids, moons, and other space debris breaking up and colliding with one another due to the planet's very strong gravity...that is not the answer I am looking for."

Partly why he enjoyed such open ended questions and vague demonstrations. Students really got to LOOK at how similar and connected so many aspects of our universe were.

Including the very fact, his favorite about the universe, that each and every one of them was made from star stuff.

Revolution? VIVA LA PLUTO. "Like maybe they knock them off course, which changes, uh... stuff." Airey's favourite word, right? "Or maybe slows them down because of momentum reasons. Or totally changes the angle of the axis, like with Uranus." He pointed at the big... thing. The one that still existed and span above them. "'Cause that one's moving slower now." Yeah, that's what it looked like, and Toby trusted his senses right now just as he trusted everybody and everything.

Finally shutting up, Toby went back to fiddling with the weird squishy soft rock that had whapped him in the head earlier. So squish.
Still highly excitable from the previous answers, it didn't take very much time for the professor to leap from the Ravenclaw's desk over to the one belonging to Mr. Tem....Mr. Toby.

Save for the word 'stuff', it as a very thoughtful response.

"You must be referring to the manner in which the large sphere seemed to slow its rotation after the initial impact of the smaller sphere, yes?" he rhetorically asked. "A very GOOD observation, inDEED! It is hypothesized that the Earth's day had been just two to three hours long at the time of Theia's impact. This high rotational speed would have been necessary for enough material to be thrown off our forming Earth into space to form the Moon. The impact therefore not only created our Moon, but also eventually produced the 24-hour day that we know and live."

FASCINATING STUFF, YEAH?!

Seeing no other raised hands, he decided to continue.

"This theory, which is the most widely accepted theory, of how the Moon was formed is called the the Giant Impactor Theory or the Giant Impact Hypothesis," he began. There were really several other names, but these were the two he would prefer students remember. "And to summarize without going into too many details, is a theory in which a Mars-sized planet, given the name Theia, collided with the Earth approximately 4.5 billion years ago and the debris from that impact is what formed our Moon. There is a lot of evidence supporting this theory, which was pulled to the forefront of astronomical research after humanity first landed on the Moon and was able to study it up close, but the theory is not without its holes. However, among the other standing theories it is the most plausible."

He really was trying not to lecture TOO much, but he was incredibly excited about this. Astronomy was, after all, his passion.

"Now, just to touch base on some of the other theories out there...another is the Capture Theory where the Earth, similar to how Mars captured its two moons - Phobos and Deimos - but it does not explain how our Moon is spherical and therefore highly unlikely. Another is one called the Fission Theory in which a piece of the Earth simply fell off turning its period of rapid spinning - supporters of this theory believe that to be the Pacific Ocean basin. But there is much evidence against this theory as well."

And there were others, but he would not to overload them with information at the moment. They still had a lot of ground to cover.

"It just goes to show you that some of the universe's greatest mysteries are not that far away at all," he manly giggled as he looked up at the now complete replica of the Earth and its moon floating above the class. "One of your assignments for homework will be to read more on these and other formation theories, so let's move on in our discussion for now. Unless there are any questions?"

Which they were free to ask at any time.

"Now, the Moon may be something that we here on Earth take for granted. We look up, it's visible. Sometimes its not when its a New Moon. It's romanticized and the source of much mythology...but just WHY is the Moon important? Furthermore, do you think the Earth would be fine without its existence?"

And hand raising starting.....NOW!
OOC: you all rock my socks! <3 Same as before, just assume that Professor Flamsteed has called on your student to speak. All answers, right or wrong, are accepted and appreciated

Class will resume in approximately 24 hours from the time of this post.

Any questions may be directed to myself OOC via VM or PM or IC to Professor Flamsteed.

Abby was a bit dissapointed that her answer wasnt right but listened to the next question and thought and thought of an answer and raised her hand and said "Our moon is important because it can be seen from earth at night but it is also important cause the moon circles the earth" Abby hoped that she was on the right track with this answer

She was DEFINITELY going to ask him about all that MAGIC but... he was already talking to other people. Crikey. This guy was nuts.

That was awesome.

......

She tried really hard to focus on this, cause once she realised they were talking about the moon she was really really interested. She LOVED the moon, it was beautiful. AND SHE KNEW ABOUT IT!!!

"Professor!" Her hand shot into the air. "The moon is a goddess, professor. She helps with medicine and long life and she makes divination clearer." Yep. "Well... not literally, but she represents a goddess." She corrected herself.

"Oh oh and she controls the tides. And cycles. Especially people cycles. We ebb.. and flooooow... as she changes." Was that it? "Oh, and she's especially strong with the feminine energy... and she helps things flooooow." She'd said flow twice, but it was relevant. She sort of waved her arms a little to get the point across...

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Uh oh. It seemed as though in the process of yanking Philipe down, the younger boy had banged his head. Way to go, Adi. Might as well have left him up because the stuff flying around was a whole lot safer than ducking for cover. Heh. "I'm sorry about that, Philipe,'' Adi said. He would offer a Froggy but Flamsteed was talking.
....................

Adi grinned at Professor Suits. "I guess you're right, Professor.'' Sometimes it was difficult to do that, you know? Like how he was not really noticing anything with the circular thingy and stuff floating around.

Ahhh! So the moon! That's what they would be focusing on today. Questions? Nope. Adi had none of those! LET'S JUST GET ON TALKING ABOUT THE AWESOME MOON! Hand up, the boy volunteered, "It affects the tides on earth. Uhhh... if the tides were always low, then the people who fish for a living will not be able to go out in their boats because the boats would be grounded in the sand and if the tides were too high they could cause flooding.'' Yeah! That answer was... alright, wasn't it?

"The climate, sir."...which was helped by that gravitational pull he'd mentioned before. There were other things he wanted to contribute to the previous question...Like how Venus didn't currently have any moons and had survived collisions just as Earth had...and about the theories of the planet absorbing the two that have been suggested...but they were moving on and Gabe wasn't interested in holding up the lesson. That wouldn't benefit anyone.

Right. Notes. He was starting his notes.

Getting his notebook, quill, and ink situated, the Ravenclaw elaborated. "The moon, essentially, slows down the planet's rotation...allowing the sun to substantially warm it."

Henric quickly muffled his impending laughter when llia asked the professor how baby rocks were made.Oh dear...he didn't want to get in trouble again from disrespecting pet rocks with their 'love' affair so he put his head down to hide his amused facial expression. He gave a thumbs up towards llia, to show that he certainly approved of her question.Alright..alrightt...be serious Henric.

Henric listened to the professor's explanation, trying to understand each bit...nope...still not getting it but he took down notes in case the professor's theoretical question appeared in the test. Right...next question.

He lifted his hand to answer, noticed what he did there..he needed to appear that he was participating in class too!

"It is because of the gravitational pull, professor, without the moon, we could all perished and die..."he answered, gulping.

Who Am I? Ern's 2460FUN

Flamstead was asking an EXISTENCE question.

Hugh very nearly wiggled in his seat when he heard. He knew this one. In fact, he was the authority in Hogwarts on existence and philosophy and other grander concepts most of these people couldn't comprehend. Poor things.

Shooting his hand up in the air, he said excitedly, "This question all depends on the assumption that we do exist. Science is one of the most conceivably concrete ideals in our modern world but we cannot know for certain anything. You run an experiment so many times and you get your best guess because so FAR all the answers come out one way. That's why science is always changing because every so often a result changes and we learn new things. ERGOOOOOOOO." was he following? "We cannot be sure of anything really because of instability and THEREFORE existence is merely a construct because you cannot be certain. So who knows? It doesn't matter. The moon."
