Arithmancy Lesson 2: Good Karma, Bad Karma

OOC: For the sake of timeline ease, let's say this lesson is occurring BEFORE all the acromantulas attacking the castle.

Spring had finally arrived in Scotland, and with it came warmer weather. Though it was currently raining outside, it was a warm rain, and if you looked carefully you could probably spot some denizens of Hogwarts out for a stroll in the light shower. Other than the extra lights Professor Tanner employed to combat the gloomy weather, there isn't much different about the room that would give a hint as to the day's activities. The abundance of cobwebs seen around the castle, however, is not as bad in this room, as Tiara arrived early to clean up as much as possible.

Professor Tanner, dressed in summery mustard-yellow robes, stands at the front of the room ready to greet her eager Arithmancers as they enter.

Too bad the place wasn't cold with the rain that was falling. Adi did like the cold but no worries. He would survive. Hehe. The Puffer, grin in place, bounded into the classroom. Oh goody! Not much cobwebs! He had arrived we- free and intended to keep it that way. But he still pointed his wand here and there, Scourgifying the room a bit. Tanner would appreciate it, he was sure. Speaking of the woman...

"Hello, Professor! Channeling your inner Hufflepuff?" The robes, after all were yellow. Chuckling to himself, Adi made his way to a seat somewhere in the middle of the class. And yes, he did make sure even that seat was Scourgified.

Felixir 07-20-2015 04:08 PM

Not gonna lie, Toby had become a little distracted in the few minutes before the Arithmancy lesson had been due to start. Through his common room windows he had noticed the rain, and for some reason thought it sounded like a WONDERFUL idea to make a detour out through the front doors and stand out in it, twiiiiiirling around in the raindrops because even though it was that light sort of rain that managed to get you soaked through, it wasn't even cold.

It was a little while before Toby suddenly remembered he DID have a class to go do, at which point the Hufflepuff bolted back inside and up to the second floor. He all but burst into the classroom, wet through and about to apologise for being late when...

"Oh." Blinkblinkblink. Not as late as he'd thought then. Well, that was lucky. Toby broke into a broad grin and waved at the professor. "Hi Professor Tanner," he said, before pushing his wet hair back and heading across to take his usual seat by one of the windows. "Lovely day!" Not a hint of sarcasm.

MudInMyBlood 07-20-2015 04:30 PM

Oh man. She was early, AGAIN. This made for like the second time this year. Things were looking up. Not really. People still shouldn't expect this sort of behavior from her. Really you should just expect the unexpected with her. Sometimes she even surprised herself.

As she walked into the classroom, she spotted the professor. "Hello professor." She looked like a ball of sunshine. It was really doing wonders for her mood. Not that she was in a bad one to start with or anything.

"Hey Adi and Toby." Both boys seemed to be in a good of a mood as she was.

Even though Hady woke that morning to rain it was okay. The weather was finally warming up and it was one of those nice calming types of rain where you just wanted to go outside and take a stroll in it. Maybe after her lessons there'd be some time to do that.

Entering the Arithmancy room the young teen was happy to see there was a lack of cobwebs in this room. Yay! She was so getting sick of those! "Hello Professor", Hady greeted with a small smile. Oh and some of her friends were already here as well today. Raising a hand she waved at AJ and Adi before heading for her usual seat.

What would they be working on today?

Unsurprisingly, Aditya Rehman was the first in the room. And he appeared to be in his usual jovial mood, which also failed to surprise. Tiara was, however, momentarily stumped by his question until she recalled her robes. A grin spread across her face at the joke. "And simultaneously willing the sun to return to us!" There, that had bolstered her good mood.

She had been thinking that at the sight of Tobias she would be willing herself not to break down in tears. This was, after all, one of the last lessons he would have with her. But that wasn't what happened at all. Instead, the boy trooped in sopping wet, and despite the warm weather, she didn't want him catching cold or dripping all over her classroom.

"Not so fast, Tobias!" she said, attempting to halt him before he made it to his seat. Directing her gaze at the small puddles forming everywhere he went, she whipped out her wand. "Drought charm, then hot air charm, I'd say, wouldn't you?" Her wand moved through the necessary movements and in her head, she thought of the required incantations.

Well, that was quite perky! "Hello yourself, Miss Valentine. Ready for examination season?" She should have asked about summer holidays, but really, students shouldn't zone out before they had passed the last hurdle.

Another cheerful student! "Glad to see the rain is not dampening your mood!" she said, chuckling at her own admittedly lame joke. "Welcome to class, Miss Lynch."

Daydreamer11 07-20-2015 08:31 PM

Janelle arrived for Arithmancy class with her mind prepared to take on some numbers. She hoped that she could do a good job today. She really didn't want to let Professor Tanner down. Entering the room, Janelle saw that only a few students had arrived so far.

Janelle was slightly taken aback when she spotted the Professor wearing bright yellow. "Hello Professor Tanner. I like your robes." It brought some sunshine to an otherwise dreary day. Acknowledgeing her classmates, she gave a cheerful "Hello" to everyone. Spotting the perfect seat, Janelle sat down. Then she took out her textbook, pretty certain that she would need to use it. After retrieving her other supplies, Janelle was ready to go.

Weasley174 07-20-2015 08:51 PM

Angel walked into the Arithmancy lesson. "Hello Professor, How are you today?" Angel hoped that the Professor was alright.

Angel noticed her sister was there with Adi, she gave them a small smile, she then noticed Janelle and she also got a small smile. Then she went and found herself a seat and waited to see what they would be learning, truth be told this wasn't one of her favourite lessons.

Felixir 07-20-2015 08:59 PM

"Oh, hey-... uh..." Wait, he knew this. Toby knew this. If he found it hard to remember names, then it was even more difficult to try and differentiate between triplets and then remember the right name for whoever he was talking to. BUT, this was easy, really, because there was one Valentine triplet he had spoken to most. Process of elimination. "AJ! Hi AJ!" Oh, and Adi was here too, Toby noticed. His prefect got a smile and wave too.

Huh, what, who, where, why, huh? Toby stopped dead in his tracks at Professor Tanner's words, right before he went to pull the chair out from under the desk so he could take a seat. He blinked, then followed the professors gaze and... ohhhhhhhhh. Oops. Oh dear. "Oh, I'm sorry, Professor." Toby kinda... felt bad about that now, but... oh, OH RIGHT. Magic was a thiNG. Before Toby knew it, he was getting all dried up and warmed up and it was aaaall good. The Hufflepuff beamed and gave the professor a DOUBLE thumbs up. Yeah. Double.

"Thanks!" ........................... "It okay if I sit down now?"

Deezerz 07-20-2015 11:33 PM

Arithmancy time.

Beverly rubbed her eyes before entering the classroom. This subject will forever be her worst subject. It was written somewhere in the stars, she was sure of it. But she was willing to get better at it. That's mainly the reason why she chose the class despite her lack of enthusiasm for the subject. A perfectionist's curse.

Entering the class she nodded politely at the woman in charge, "Good day, Professor Tanner." Then promptly took a seat.

Jessiqua 07-20-2015 11:38 PM

Oh, the rain. Zhenya wished she could have taken a walk through Hogwarts in the warm rain once more before leaving. Hopefully after the lesson it would still be raining, and Zhenya could go and see the lush greenery of the Hogwarts Grounds.

For now, it was Arithmancy. Zhenya walked through the door, smiling at the choice of robes Professor Tanner was wearing. Anything other than Black got thumbs up from the snake. "Hello Professor. Lovely robes," she said, walking in. She saw some people already there, and waved at them, before sitting down.

Lislchen 07-21-2015 06:03 AM

Why Maggie was taking this class, she didn't quite know either. She wasn't very good at it. And she HATED not being good at things. But also it was one of those classes where only the professor knew that she wasn't that good at it. So it wasn't that bad. It would be a lot worse if she was bad at like Charms or something. Other people would SEE that she sucked at it.

So. Yeah.

"Hello, Professor Tanner." Maggie greeted her, even putting on a smile that if you didn't know her appeared to be genuine. Truth was, she wasn't in a good mood today. It was RAINING. Which meant she couldn't go outside. Obviously. Her hair would get all frizzy if she did. So once she'd taken a seat, Maggie proceeded to glare at the rain outside.

Maybe she could glare it away.

Ah, an eagle! Excellent. That gave them every house now. "Hello, Miss Guidry! Thank you, dear. I thought they would help to brighten up the place a bit." And so far she had already gotten a few comments.

"Not a problem, Tobias," she said, finishing up her magic. She gave him a thumbs up back, happy to see him so happy. "No!" she said, holding out a hand to stop him, but then she laughed, unable to hold a straight face. "Of course, go ahead."

Another almost-graduate! Tiara wasn't sure she could take this much longer. "Hello, Miss Burton," came the reply, a slight sniff following. "Thank you, dear, thank you."

"Hello there, Miss Traulton," she replied automatically, foisting a cheerful countenance onto her face. She must not think of the graduates, or she'd be a puddle the whole lesson.

Tiara pulled herself together, willing her mood to brighten. This happened every year towards the end when she started thinking about the students she may never see again. "Okay, settle in, everyone. Hello hello!" There, that was better. "We're going to get right down to it. Tell me what you know about karma, whether in the Arithmancy sense or the Muggle sense."

OOC: The lesson has officially begun. Please don't announce your late arrival.

FearlessLeader19 07-21-2015 05:30 PM

Adi laughed. He LOVED Professor Tanner's response. "The rain is muuuuch better though,'' he said cheerfully. He could go dance in the rain right about now. But then he would catch a cold most likely... but then again, there was the Pepperup Potion for that.
...................

The sixth year flicked his wand at a bit of cobweb lurking at the corner of his desk. Bleh. Thank the Hippogriffs he had noticed it before his hand had brushed it. Oh, looky! Toby! "Hiya, Toby!'' Why was his head all soaked? Maybe he had forgotten to dry it. Adi knew that unfortunately, Toby's memory wasn't the best.

Next up, came the girlfriend. Rain and AJ coming to classes earlier? The day just kept getting better. "Who are you and what have you done with AJ Valentine?" Hehe. He just HAD to tease her.

More arrivals! Waves for Hades, Janelle, Bevvy and Zhenya.
.....................

No more spider webs around, no? Well, yeah there were but Adi was more concerned about any that may be lurking around him. Luckily, Tanner decided it was time to start the lesson. Goody! This would distract the Hufflepuff from all the icky webs. Hopefully.

Book and quill ready to for him to make notes? CHECK! But first, the question must be answered. Adi's hand shot up right away. He was leaning towards the muggle side for his response because this topic had been brought up before in his family, given his mom's background and what her own side of the family believed. ''Karma is believed, in the muggle sense, to be that whatever you do has an effect on your future. It's sort of like that saying 'What goes around comes around'. So, if you do bad stuff, you'll get bad stuff in return.'' Adi was not sure how he felt about that. Good and bad things happened to persons regardless of what they did.

Felixir 07-21-2015 05:31 PM

!!!!!!????????????????????!?!?!!???? NO????? :whaa:

... Oh. Right. It was a joke. Toby totally knew that, suuuuure. He grinned and laughed along with the professor, then saluted her and finally took his seat. Because he was allowed to now. Yup.

Right down to it then, and if Toby noticed that Tanner was all choked up or anything, he pretended not to, because he always liked it when people didn't notice when he was upset. So, y'know, just returning the favour.

So KARMA. That one was easy. Toby raised his hand.

"It's like a roundabout." ................ "What goes around comes around. Being kind to people, all that stuff." Even though that wasn't actually a reason to BE kind, or anything. Karma was just a thing that some people thought happened. Toby had never really thought about it.

Daydreamer11 07-21-2015 05:51 PM

Janelle saw her classmates as they arrived. Spotting the wave from Adi, she gave him one back along with a big smile. Then Professor Tanner was ready for class to begin. Janelle turned her attention to the woman in yellow and listened to what she had to say.

First question.......karma. Janelle raised her hand, ready to give her thoughts on the matter. "Karma is like the scale that balances things in the universe. You do something good and good things will come back to you. You do something mean or bad and sooner or later something equally as bad wil happen to you. It may not be right away, but it will happen."

MudInMyBlood 07-21-2015 06:20 PM

SPOILER!!: professor greeting
Well, that was quite perky! "Hello yourself, Miss Valentine. Ready for examination season?" She should have asked about summer holidays, but really, students shouldn't zone out before they had passed the last hurdle.

AJ wanted to clap for Toby when he remembered her name and which sister she was. It seemed like he was struggling at first, but he got it. Smiles for Toby. Oh, and Adi had jokes. What else was new? "I have taken over her body. I am the new AJ Valentine."

Then Tanner caught her off guard. Examination season? That was the worst kind of season. "Erm... No. Not really..." Not to mention that she was going to be a fifth year next term which meant the dreaded OWLS. Nope, best not to think about that right now.

Got any tacos, Tanner? That was a much better topic. Moxley wasn't here to steal them so this might be the best time to try it out. Yeah, she was pretty sure. Only the class was starting now. Darn the luck.

Her conversations ceased and all eyes were on the professor. Karma was an interesting subject to her. "If you're going to be a meany you can bet you will stub your toe or something." Instant karma was the best.

griffin 07-21-2015 06:48 PM

Karma. They had learned about karmic debts in the lesson that had been combined with muggle studies. Professor Tanner wanted to know what they knew about karma. In the muggle sense? "Karma is a sort of cause and effect. Bad actions will lead to bad things happening to you, and good actions will lead to good things happening to you." Sort of. She wasn't entirely sure about that. Jangle had done a pretty good job of explaining karma in the muggle sense. In the arithmancy sense? "In arithmancy there are karmic lessons and karmic debts. Karmic lessons are numbers missing from your name, and karmic debts are about things like abuse of power." That she knew more about. She also knew about how to calculate those numbers if she had remembered how to correctly, but Professor Tanner was probably going to talk about that in the lesson. Would they be learning more about karmic numbers today? Maybe karmic lessons? Or finding their karmic debts? Fascinating stuff. This should be an interesting lesson.

SPOILER!!: notes
Karma

Weasley174 07-21-2015 10:55 PM

Angel looked at the Professor "It's been a great day." Angel smiled then listened to the question and raised her hand. "Professor isn't Karma when you do something wrong you get punished for it." Angel thought about something. "I used to watch a programme called My name is Earl, he made a list after being hit by a car." Angel smiled, "It's a brilliant programme Professor."

Jessiqua 07-21-2015 11:59 PM

What was up with Professor Tanner? Didn't have anything to do with the end of year approaching did it? Zhenya knew she would be a wreck the week before she left Hogwarts. Although she wouldn't miss the cobwebs.

Now they were getting started, and firstly talking about Karmic/Karma. Zhenya raised her hand; "Professor a karmic number is the interpreted from ones name, and shows you what area you will," how did she explain it in words? "Um... struggle in." She supposed that would be clear? All this study and cramming was making her brain mushy.

feeheeheeny 07-22-2015 01:54 AM

Sophie had entered the room shortly after Tobes had dried himself, soon enough to catch Tanner teasing him about not being able to sit down, but then letting him. Soph had given him a what was that? amused kind of look as she sat beside him in their usual seats, but didn't ask anything about it. Nah, whatever had happened, she was certain that Tobes was just being a nerd as usual.

Just another day.

Karma, though? Sophie gave a mild sigh that they were digging deeper into this topic, but she went to raise her hand... and then put it back down as people gave the first answer she'd intended to give about karma in a general sense, then Penelope and Zhenya in particular went on to provide solid information on arithmancy-related karma, too, so... there wasn't really much that needed to be added to the discussion, was there?

Sophie didn't think so, so her hand stayed down and she simply picked up her quill and wrote down her own definition of karma in general, then arithmancy-related aspects of it. Still avidly paying attention, okay? Just nothing to add. Coasting. Taking everything in... and also resisting the urge to antagonize Tobes beside her. End-of-term feelings were getting to her, okay? She wanted to have all the fun with him as often as she could, even if it was in the middle of a class, which... had almost landed them in detention with Flammy, so she was TRYING REALLY HARD TO RESIST, OKAY?

Don't poke the Tobes, Sophie Brown. Don't.

Interesting that people seemed to be focusing on the 'bad side' of karma. "Might I suggest travel by broom, then, Miss Valentine?" she quipped. "Good example."

Good, someone did know a bit about the Arithmancy side of things. "Correct, the main two parts are karmic lessons and karmic debts. We won't have enough time to get into both of those today, though." She could spend an entire term on them, after all.

Sometimes Angel Valentine drew odd parallels that Tiara really did not understand at all. This was one of those times. "I cannot say that I know of the show, Miss Valentine, so I will just take your word for it relating to our topic of discussion." It was a head-scratcher, that answer.

Tiara nodded along as Zhenya responded. Janelle had alluded to this already, but now it was being elaborated. "Yes, it does come from the birth name. And also correct on the areas of struggle." Perhaps not the most eloquently worded, but who was to say she herself always had wonderful wording?

Don't.

And then there was Sophie Brown, who was staying uncharacteristically quiet. She almost always had something to add on the topic. Perhaps she was a bit emotional with the impending graduations as well?

"Well, you all did an excellent job of conveying the general idea of karma." Clearly they knew a lot about it, so she didn't need to bore them by going over it all again. She began to walk around the room, spreading her sunshine, as it were. "Let's see what else you all know.. If you had to guess, where do you think the idea of karma first came from? I welcome ridiculous guesses, as long as you have a solid reason!"

Kate had no idea where the idea of karma came from. She didn't even know where to start. Well, yeah, she did know where to start--it was called WILD GUESS. Accepting that fact, she raised her hand. "It's probably just common sense, because most people know you're going to get out of something what you put in to it," she said. "If you act lazy, you're going to get something lazy in return. If you treat someone rudely, they're going to stick you the first chance they get. People probably just knew they'd reap what they sowed, and so they invented a word for it."

Janelle was happy that her answer had made sense to the professor. Sometimes she tried to explain things, but they didn't quite come out of her mouth as clearly as they were in her head. Before she could dwell on it though, another question was asked.

After thinking about it for a moment, Janelle raised her hand. "I'm not sure who first thought up the idea of karma, but I'm going to guess that it came from someone in India. 'Cause karma just sounds like an Indian word" That probably didn't answer the question, but that was the best that Janelle could up with.....for now.

LOL, AJ. You were funny. Adi was used to the jokes but this new AJ could take some getting used to. He was used to the one who was late and hated early classes. But he could also see she was trying her best this term and he was proud of her. SUPER proud.
....................

Yep, pretty much everyone's description of Karma was the same. Onto the next question... which was pretty much one of the easiest Tanner could ever ask. Or so he thought, because he could be wrong about his answer. "What Janelle said, Professor. Ancient India, I think. Karma is a Sanskrit word and those words are pretty old, at least that's what my mother told me.'' The woman looooved those Sanskrit music... him, not so much. It bored him. Hand down, the Hufflepuff thought of his mom. He missed her though she was still bothering him about him being with AJ. Buuuut, he had a lesson to focus on and notes to make!
