Default the Office of Professor Flamsteed

Perhaps the first thing you notice as you enter Professor Flamsteed's office is that it is...clean. Ridiculously clean. While he is not exactly obsessive compulsive about cleanliness, Professor Flamsteed highly values organization and keeps everything in a specific location. Needless to say, if one of his quills is at an odd angle ... he will notice. The wood cabinets above his desk are filled with all sorts of reference books on all branches astronomy on the left side while the right side is filled with works of muggle science fiction ranging from Douglas Adams to H.G. Wells to Robert Heinlein and everyone in between. His desk is mostly empty except for some black accents and a comfortable looking pink pillow where the professor's pet rock, Pebbles, is currently resting. Beside this is a plant in a unique looking planter.

On the walls are a few framed pieces of abstract line and paint splatter artwork that Professor Flamsteed has collected over the years along with a drawing given to him by a former student in a black frame just to the left of another large gifted piece of artwork also in a black frame above the sofa. Beside it is yet another drawing, this one signed, in another black frame. There is a black sofa up against one of the walls with a pet house on the floor beside it where Pebbles sleeps when not on the pink pillow on the desk. To the right of the black sofa and is a wooden closet where Professor Flamsteed keeps a few freshly pressed suits from his extensive collection, just in case, and to the left of this is a rather impressive looking tie display case. Located opposite of Professor Flamsteed's desk is yet another display case, but this one is filled with all sorts of muggle science fiction models - one of which is sporting something on its head - that he has built and painted himself - a hobby of his when he is not busy teaching, grading, or researching. To the left of this case is what appears to be a muggle telephone booth, but upon further inspection of it you will find Herschel scurrying about within.

OOC: please do not post here without having been invited in by Professor Flamsteed from the waiting area or else risk your post being unceremoniously deleted.

He had a delicate operation ahead of him, repairing some of the paint that had been chipped off his latest find in the muggle flea markets. Poor sap had no clue he was selling a one of a kind and out of production collectible for so cheap. He had almost felt obligated to inform the bloke, but had refrained.

Picking up the brush with the smallest point and unscrewing the grey paint, he nearly jumped out of his skin when the knock came on his door. "Come on in, Miss Brown," he called back, giving his wand a flick towards the door to unlock it. "But do so quietly and sloooooowly."

No loud sudden movements as he tried to fix this one spot...

OOC: you may post in the office now :3 welcome!

Oh, goooood, she didn't have to wait long at all! And... he didn't actually seem disappointed to hear it was her, though it was strange that he didn't greet her properly and the door unlocked on its own - did he not actually want to see her? Or did he have a sixth sense and know she was coming and have her death planned for the moment she stepped inside his office? It was all a trap, wasn't it?!

Sophie Brown may have wanted to be sorted into Ravenclaw, but she had enough Gryffindor in her that she couldn't run. No, she was tough as nails and could handle any punishment that was coming to her, so without much further hesitation, Sophie followed orders and veeeeeeerrrrryyyyyy gently and slowly opened the office door, bracing herself slightly to die to see...

...him being a total nerd. Merlin, she shouldn't even have been surprised, but she WAS a little bit because she wasn't meeting her doom at all. Unless he was planning on launching that thing at her head once he restored it to its proper state - seemed polite of him to do so, actually, which was very much like him, so she decided maybe she shouldn't let her guard down at all.

He was concentrating hard, she could tell, so she continued to slooooooooooowly creep into the room, taking soft, silent footsteps until she reached the chair opposite his desk and very quietly sat down.

And, both highly intrigued and amused, she waited for him to give her permission to breathe.

Kace made his way into the office and thought it looked really nice. He was impressed with how it look. As promised he saw the extra hot chocolate mug and he grinned. He was gonna enjoy it, he hoped it was extra chocolaty. He got his mug and whistled and filled it up. It was nice to have something in his hands. It wade off the nerves. He had no idea what to expect with this conversation but he might as well cut to the chase.

He took a deep breath and began, "First of all Professor I would like to thank you for the reward certificate I got. My parents were thrilled." He grinned and he was referring to the Astronomical Academic Achievement Award. He was surprised he got it but then again he wasn't because Astronomy was his favorite subject. "Second thing is I was wondering what careers I could get outside the Magical World dealing with Astronomy?" There he asked it. Now he waited patiently for the Professor's answers.

"Oh yes i so want a career in alien language" he said , obviously sarcastically, as he entered the office. He looked around for a few moments to see if his hat was in sight so he could stun the Professor, take it and run but not finding it. He sighed and moved to the sofa and jumped on it, lying down instead. His feet dangling off the edge which was something his mother had kicked in to him to do so. Pure habit thing. "You know, i take that back, learning an alien language would actually be really cool" And no that didn't mean he was a nerd. "Like Mermish or something" he added.

Sitting up a bit and shifting around so that he was now looking at the Head of House, Kevin took a deep breath. "Okay, so , three things." he held one finger up indicating one. "I'm ready to say ...that...word so give me my hat back. Two.." he raised another finger. "As you might know, i saved the student's lives not once but TWICE now, i earned a prize...money is good NOT the hat and three" another finger "You deliberately made Zander a Prefect didn't you ? Because you know he's my best friend. I don't like Prefects" except for Zander and Adi but that was besides the point," everyone knows that, so you did that on purpose right?"

Also... "My hands are cold, where is my hot chocolate?"

Tongue sticking out of the side of his mouth in extreme concentration - although perhaps from a distance it looked as though he wore an expression of pure discomfort - Airey ever so slowly brought the brush towards the tiny spot of discoloration and ever so delicately tapped just the tip of the brush on the spot. A bead of sweat ran down his brow, catching on his headpiece, and the man exhaled only when he pulled the brush away.

"One spot down," he said mostly to himself in a relaxed tone. "Merlin knows how many more to go." Setting all his equipment down - although he did forget his magnifying gear was still on his head, thus giving his eyes the appearance that they belonged to a tarsier (a creature he only knew the name of because of Medea). "Thank you, Miss Brown. Red alert down. At ease."

He gingerly moved the figure and paint off to the side. "To what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?"

Shutting the door behind them, more out of habit than anything else, Airey took long strides over towards his desk and opened one of the drawers for another bag of gourmet marshmallows. This time in raspberry flavor. His smile wavered every so slightly, but not enough to notice, as he popped two into his hot chocolate mug.

"I am pleased to hear that," he beamed, leaning against his desk as he spoke. "You worked hard and it was justly rewarded. I hope you use those galleons wisely." Because it was a mighty fine load of galleons to have been rewarded, especially at such a young age. "I was not aware you had an interest in a career in astronomy," he exclaimed, hand moving over his heart. It did the man so much good to hear that from students. A rare occurrence, so he had been informed, for a wizarding school like Hogwarts. Although a wise decision to ask about muggle options seeing as Mr. Lecium had not taken the Astronomy OWL. "That will depend on what sort of field of astronomy you are most interested in. There is everything from observatory based careers to working in outer space, all of which will require additional schooling after Hogwarts."

Also... "My hands are cold, where is my hot chocolate?"

Mr. Hirase was clearly unaware at all the opportunities there were in these "alien languages." He had a colleague from university that had gone on to linguist studies and actually produced a brand new language for a science fiction series. One that had guidebooks on how to study, written by the man himself naturally, and was quite well off financially now.

Although Mr. Hirase comparing that to Mermish was...amusing.

"Don't let them hear you call their language that," he chuckled. "They may find the term insulting and drown you." Just some food for thought. "But you can make a mighty fine career in linguists if you so choose to."

Settling back down into his seat behind his desk, Airey folded his hands one over the other as Kevin spoke. An amused smirk tugged at the corners of his lips and remained there during the duration of what the Gryffindor had to say. Pausing for a moment before speaking, he gave his office a glance over and then rested his eyes on the boy. Did he not see that his hat was in plain sight? He would let that be left unsaid for the time being.

"Before I address your other...shall we call them demands, Mr. Hirase," he said, summoning a mug of hot chocolate lazily for the boy. "Are you implying that you are not happy for the opportunities for personal growth and development that have been given to your friend? Not to mention what prestige having been awarded that role will have for Mr. Adair as he applies for university, jobs, and internships for his post-Hogwarts life? Perhaps even for opportunities come next summer?" He paused there, eyes locked on hard to Mr. Hirase's. "Surely, as his friend, you would wish to congratulate him on his achievements. Just as I am sure he would do for you."

"Thank you, Miss Brown. Red alert down. At ease."

He gingerly moved the figure and paint off to the side. "To what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?"

For being the smartest person Sophie Brown had ever known, she was surprised at how child-like Flamsteed was sometimes - in a good way, of course. The passion with which he carried out tasks was very similar to that of a curiously elated child, and it was actually a little adorable, if... a grown man could be adorable.

When he was finished with his painting, Soph tilted her head and her eyebrows raised slightly. Was... he really not going to take that headset off? Did he really want to have the conversation just like this?

Welp.

In an attempt to defuse some of the tension she was feeling over the situation, Sophie very gingerly crossed one leg over the other and laced her fingers neatly in her lap as she responded, "I wanted to say hello, actually. And..." err... "well, a few things, actually. First and foremost, I wanted to tell you that... well, everyone knows I'm gonna be a Wandmaker someday and a potioneer, too, and m'super good at those subjects, but..." She took a moment to collect her thoughts, her gaze on her fidgeting fingers, then cleared her throat and went on, "I like Astronomy a lot, too, y'know? And the Wandmaker at Ollivander's, Ira Banner - he told me, back in my first year when I told him I wanted to be a Wandmaker, he TOLD me that I needed to be good at Potions, Herbology, Astronomy, Runes, and Arithmancy to be a good Wandmaker. Like... I need an Outstanding in all of those, basically, and that's no big deal. I've got 'em down." Shrug. She knew it. Well... Runes was questionable, but the other four were solid, so she had a WHOLE TERM to feel just as confident about Runes, too. Easy peasy.

"So that was originally why I started getting into Astronomy even more, 'cause I needed to, but like... I love it. A lot." There was a distressed sigh as Sophie pulled her hair over one shoulder to brush her fingers through it anxiously. "How do I DECIDE what I want to DO with my life when there are SO MANY INTERESTING THINGS? I want to study it all - Astronomy, Potions, Wandlore - and I want to be like... the master of all these fun things. They're ALL fun, professor, and all intellectually stimulating and enjoyable and make me happy. I wanna be a potioneer and a wandmaker and an astronomer." Her gaze drifted up to meet his and she gave him a hard, calculating look. "I want your honesty - you've known me for four years, professor. You've seen me grow from a lil ambitious first year to an even more ambitious fifth year," she grinned, "and I trust you to hit me with reality - CAN I do it all? Are my dreams unrealistic?"

C'mon, Flamsteed. She was a big girl. She could take it.

“Yeah well” Kevin said as he sat normally now , kicked his shoes off and placed his feet on the sofa , as if he was at home now. “Not if I drown them first” was that even possible? Mweh. Drown them in air? “And I always thought that Mermish WAS the language ..what is it then?” And as for the career in linguists advice , Kevin shook his head. “Nope , I already have my heart out to become the greatest Potioneer ever” Noticed how he said heart and not mind? THAT was how passionate he was with this.

Watching the man sit behind his desk and doing that thing with his hands again, Kevin felt slightly uncomfortable because that was a typical authority type of sitting and it annoyed him to no end. Demands? Oh no those weren’t demands he asked for or…well, no wait it were and he wanted them all before he left this office! Although at this moment, when his Head of House looked at him hard he wished he hadn’t even mentioned the thing about Zander.

He let out a frustrated groan while he leaned closer to the edge of the seat and after he looked at the ceiling for a second he locked his eyes with him as well and stared back. “You.Don’t.Get.It, do you?” he said, each word had been said slower to make it clear. “That is EXACTLY why I don’t like it that he is a Prefect!” the boy let out another frustrated huff. “I mean, what would people think of him when they ever found out that his best friend is someone like me? Huh?” THAT was what was bothering him about Zander being a Prefect. Not because he was one but if anyone ever found out that he was best friends with a bully and major egoist, they would think down on him as well!

"You know what Profesor I didn't know that either till recently. Once I got to thinking what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, I have always been fascinated by the stars." As cheesy as it sounds it was the truth. He saw him move his hand over his heart and it made him blush a bit.

Kace knew he didn't take is Astronomy OWL. He just didn't want to face the rejection of seeing his dream being crumpled if he failed. He just couldn't bear it. "Aahh well the type I wanna do is like study the stars and constellations.." he smiled. Oh? Additional schooling? Well he figured that. "Would that mean I would have to go to Wizarding University Professor?" he was curious.

No, seriously. His nose was a hair away from the soft, and expensive, fabric of his ties.

"If only I had found my Carolina blue silk tie," he muttered to himself while making a mental note to put up the missing poster once again. He was just about to select a red tie, Alizarin crimson to be precise, and held it in his hand when he heard the feeble knocking upon his door. Nervous little first year? He ought to go greet the poor thing properly...but...tie...

Removing his wand from its holster, he gave it a flick to open up the door. "Come on it, but leave your shoes at the door," he said, not even bothering to look up to see which nervous first year it was.

You know, for all the visits over to Professor Flamsteed.... Zander had never actually been inside the office... Had he? The card delivery had been in the waiting area... The pep talk... Cleaning.... A lot had happened outside hadn't it? So when the Professor called out to him to walk in, Zander couldn't helped but be a little surprised. Woah. Was this like a Fifth Year privilege or something? Must've been, really. He wasn't even going to question the shoes thing because maybe this was just another one of those strange processes the man insisted upon. Like the lint rollers. Actually, he was quite surprised that there wasn't a sign to do that before entering. Anyways. Taking off his shoes rather lazily, he put them to the side of the door way before walking in.

...... What?

Ties. That was new.

Though Zander honestly preferred regular carpeting, if this is how the man worked best then let him be, right? "Hi, Professor?" he said eyeing the ties instead of looking at Airey. Whoops. Then furrowing his brows in a confused manner, he shrugged before deciding to just sit down on the floor in a small spot not-occupied by ties. He didn't want to be on his feet, okay? And the floor just looked really inviting despite the tie-display. Trailing his finger over the tie nearest him, he looked up curiously, "What are you doing with all of these ties, Professor?.... And uh, do you need any help?" The last part was said with the slight hesitancy.

SPOILER!!: Sophie!

Knowing all to well that that 'first and foremost' would be followed by a plethora of other topics - especially in the case of Miss Brown - Airey gave the Ravenclaw his undivided attention. Which was quite easy to do considering the subject matter. It was one thing to teach students in the classroom and see them evolve as individuals right before his eyes within the compounds of the castle, but discussing what came next - what path their lives may take once they left the security of Hogwarts - was almost a more fascinating phenomena.

"Those are all stellar fields of study, Miss Brown," he grinned. Although he had an obvious favorite among them. "But I must admit that I do not know too much, nothing beyond the basics that is, of the connection between astronomy and wandlore. But, if I may be so bold to say so, based on what you have said just now - and this is meant as no disrespect for the other careers you mentioned - it seems your true passion is in the dream of becoming a wandmaker." Just an observation. He could tell by the way her eyes lit up when she spoke about it. "But just because you have one true passion does not mean that you must give up the others. Anyone can be an astronomer, Miss Brown. It is a trait that we, as humans, are all born with being decedents of astronomers. I just realized, in my youth, that I wanted to take this further than any other past time I had."

Assuming she recalled the lesson in which he spoke in detail on the subject.

"I do not see why you can't be all three of those things, especially if they are all your passion, but as a career...sees like wandmaking is the best of all those worlds. Combining all your interests into one profession. He paused for a moment, tapping his chin thoughtfully while smiling at the Ravenclaw. "Not to mention, as is in your generous nature, providing the wizarding world with something that will forever be an extension of themselves."
SPOILER!!: Kevin!

Drown....a mermaid.

...

Airey might be rubbish at Creatures, but not even he was that daft. And Merlin did he need to figure out a tactic to teach Mr. Hirase to not be defiant just for defiance's sake. "It is, but referring it to as an alien language may be a bit offensive."

Potions, huh? Culloden certainly had his hands full then.

Airey was not entirely pleased with the manner in which Mr. Hirase was sitting, but at least he HAD taken his shoes of this time. So score one for the Astronomy professor! Listening to what the young man had to say, however, was....perplexing. And his initial reaction was to call it selfish as well, but he refrained.

"So, you are saying that Mr. Adair should be punished by association?" he asked, eyebrow raised. "Well, in that case, why don't we just lock all students sorted into Slytherin away in Azkaban for being sorted into the same house as the Dark Lord. All Gryffindors not to be trusted because one of the greatest betrayals in our history was caused because of a one Peter Pettigrew." He threw his arms up dramatically into the air. Yes, punish the world by association. Brilliant concept, Mr. Hirase. "It is no secret, Mr. Hirase, that you and Mr. Adair are friends. Best friends, as you put it. And as I have told the both of you on various occasions, I am pleased that you are. You are good for each other."

Dramatics aside, the astronomer leaned over his desk just a little to make sure that he was making eye contact with the Gryffindor. "Now, I am sorry that your world is apparently shattering now that your friend and someone who you respect is now in an authority position and thus ruining this image you have created of authority figures in which they are all evil. But the world is not black and white, Mr. Hirase. And it it about time you ceased assuming the worst about yourself. Especially with others, Mr. Adair and myself included, are trying to help you see the good."

Entirely missing the point behind the boy's words? Certainly. But he was no mind reader. ‎Legilimency had never been a subject he had excelled in.
SPOILER!!: Kace!

As cheesy as it sounds it was the truth.

Huh, interesting. Of course also pleasing to the man's ears to help another astronomy hopeful. But seeing as this was only a recent life revelation, Airey could tell that it would take some time fishing around to figure out where the Hufflepuff's true passion in the subject was. Not an open and shut case as it had been with Miss Wisteria.

"Ah, so more observational astronomy then, I take it?" he asked as a means of further clarification as he rummaged around with some folders in one of his desk drawers. "No, not necessarily. Muggle university will do just fine, especially since you do not have an OWL in Astronomy you can use on your application. Your marks in the subject and the right recommendations from professors here at Hogwarts will do just fine." He pulled out a few folders from his desk and set them on top. "However, it will require additional study on your behalf as Hogwarts does not cover the same subjects that muggle schools do. I have made arrangements previously for home school courses that can be done via owl, if you are sure that is the way you want to go."
SPOILER!!: Zander

Tie in hand, Airey pushed himself up on to his knees as the prefect entered. "Ah, Mr. Adair," he said, his voice full of surprise. "I was not expecting you." Obviously.

"Oh, all this? I'm just doing my monthly cleaning inspection of my tie inventory," he said with an eager salute. It was like Christmas morning to the man. Lots of things were...when he got to thinking about it. "Have you ever tried your hand at muggle ironing before, Mr. Adair?"

This was QUITE the statement, mind you. The astronomer did not even trust the house elves to take care of his suits.

"But surely you did not come here to help me with my cleaning, although appreciated. What can I do for you?"

The Gryffindor raised a single brow at the clearly, surprised Professor... Why was he so surprised? Kinda threw Zander off to be completely honest. As if maybe he had done something wrong by showing up? No, it couldn't be. "Well, I figured since we didn't really have the chance to talk at the Gryffindor Welcome Event...," suddenly losing his train of thought, he looked back down to the ties, as if maybe a stroke of inspiration would just spring up from them. But, no such luck. "Just... It was about time to make a visit." Or something like that. That's where he was going with it wasn't he?

As for the 'monthly cleaning inspection of his tie inventory', Merlin. "You do this every month?" Was that really a thing that people did? Zander owned maybe a total of three ties... And those were for the special occasions, but he'd never imagine doing a monthly cleaning inspection.... Monthly. "Uh, once or twice, Professor. My mother mostly does the ironing." She was like a pro at it too. But that was besides the point. He technically knew how to use an iron. Technically.

But the Astronomy Professor was right. Zander wasn't here to help with cleaning, he was here for other reasons. Actually, he was technically here for a lot of reasons. Maybe even one too many reasons.

"WHAT?!" The shout came out after he had taken a sip of the hot chocolate and he had listened only to the first few word of him thinking that Zander should be punished about being a Prefect. He placed the mug on the ground before he would knock it over. "I never said that! you didn't listen at all!" and the whole talk about Gryffindors being betrayers and the Slytherin's having to be thrown in to azkaban because the Dark Lord had been in that same house was also VERY CONFUSING to him.

He needed a drink , so he reached for the hot chocolate and took another sip while thinking about what to say. "And i never said i hated ALL authority. Just in general. I could never hate Zander unless he did something that caused me to hate him , and Adi is a good kid and leader as well, Merlin's beard! even YOU'RE okay because if i truly hated authority i wouldn't have been here discussing my problems!" Why did no one get that?! Letting out a frustrated groan in which the Gryffindor scratched his head, he looked at the Professor. "Can we talk about my prize rewards now?"

Kace nodded and was glad Professor Airey was getting the gist. "Yeah I would like to observe you know like work with telescopes and the stars. I mean the trip to the astronomy museum made me open my eyes about what I really want to do." He loved doing the moon walk bouncer and just exploring the different aspects of space. "I actually look with my telescope at home and see if I can find constellations for fun." He grinned sheepishly hopefully he wasn't too nerdy.

Kace heard that he could excel in a muggle university just fine. That would make his father happy that is for sure. Well, that had been another shining example of the astronomer's not-so-stellar bedside manner. Filter, Flamsteed. Filter your thoughts so as not to make the prefect quiver like an unbalanced chemical compound. "Well, always a pleasure," he said after clearing his throat of any and all awkward.

Inspecting another tie, and noting the way that the fabric was a little too crinkly for his liking, he lifted it up and turned towards the young man again. "Hmmm, perhaps I should handle the ironing then. You can check for ties that look like they could use a bit of ironing. No crinkle too small, Mr. Adair."

Oh but you did, Mr. Hirase. Heavily implied it at least. But the astronomer continued to remain calmly seated - save for the moment he reached up to scratch his nose - and waited for the young man to finish whatever it was he had as a rebuttal.

"Be careful of who you accuse of not listening to you, Mr. Hirase. Your general attitude and temper have not earned you many fans and it would be wise to keep the ones you have," he warned. He understood that this one had a particularly hard time channeling his Gryffindor level emotions, but it was about time he learned how to. He was not a first year anymore and sweet solstice those raging teenage hormones were only going to make it worse.

Airey shuddered at the thought.

Oh-so-casually reached for his drink and taking a long sip from it, he tried hard not to choke as he swallowed. The poor kid had a very skewed perception of reality. "Mr. Hirase," he began, setting his cup down on the table and then drumming his fingers against the top of the table. "That is the most absurd thing I have ever heard you say and trust me, that IS saying something. Mr. Adair's triumphants and failures will be his own, just as yours will. So I suggest you stop worrying about this and focus on other more urgent matters." Like keeping up his own grades and worrying about how his own future would look.

He leaned back in his chair, fingers drumming against the sides of his seat. "And what, exactly have you done to have earned a prize? How is it that you saved the school, twice?"

Flipping through some more files, mhm-ing to himself now and again as he did, it was becoming apparent that Mr. Lecium needed more exposure to the subject before making his decision on what path to take. And that was okay. They had time for that, but it would require exposure beyond what he could give him in the classrooms here at Hogwarts.

Pulling out an application form, he passed it to Mr. Lecium. "I think your first step is to consider apply to Astronomy Camp. Here is a flyer about it as well. There is an satellite camp located in England, but I would suggest going to the one all the way in America if you and your family can afford it."

Doing so would give him extra exposure and the extra push academically he needed to really throw himself into the field.

"I'll owl my colleague about setting you up with some muggle course studies, mathematics and physics especially, being sent to you, so be sure you discuss this with your parents before we more forward because it will be a bit of an additional cost. No where near what is required for Hogwarts, of course."

SPOILER!!: Our Stellar Head of House

Inspecting another tie, and noting the way that the fabric was a little too crinkly for his liking, he lifted it up and turned towards the young man again. "Hmmm, perhaps I should handle the ironing then. You can check for ties that look like they could use a bit of ironing. No crinkle too small, Mr. Adair."

Honestly, Zander knew as little about ties as he knew about Ancient Runes. So, it was probably a good thing that he wasn't going to be the one handling the ironing. Yes, very good thing. "Of course, Professor," and normally he wouldn't be all for volunteering to help inspect ties. Not really a great use of time, you know? Especially when he could be using that time to go play with his cruppy and stuff... But, he was probably going to be here for a bit and there was something appealing about focusing his mind on examining the thin pieces of fabric. It was like a nice break from all the wandering his mind had been doing lately. Especially since he felt so overworked with OWLs already.

He picked up a tie and examined it closely as his Head of House got up to grab the ironing board. Noticing a couple of folds in the fabric, he gently set it down to the side, somewhere that would be easily distinguishable from the rest of the collection. Then he reached for another one and began inspecting it in the same process as he had the other. "Do you normally do this all on your own, sir?" He knew he wasn't supposed to call Professor Flamsteed 'sir', but it was kind of a habit now. But anyways, there were a lot of ties. And if his Head of House did this every single month... Well, that's even more tiring than Arithmancy Homework. Well okay, maybe not as tiring as that. But pretty near close.

Though he wasn't really here to inquire about the tie inspecting techniques... No, there were other reasons. Lots of reasons. But one main one. Giving the tie in hand one lass thorough look, he set it down in a new pile on the other side of his legs. This one didn't have any crinkles. He triple checked. "I know I didn't really get the chance to say this before, Professor... But I just wanted to say thank you, for this," he glanced down at the Prefect badge stuck on his chest and then back up at his Head of House, before picking up another tie. "Thanks for believing in me, even though I bet Kevin hasn't been all too happy with you 'cause of it." Yeah, that's right. He had seen the look on the fourth year's face in the luggage compartment. And though he did try to act otherwise, the disappointment was there. And it had bothered Zander. A lot, actually. Though talking to Lottie helped ease that a bit.

Kace took the flyer about the Astronomy Camp the Professor suggested. He began looking at it and it looked bloody cool! He was impressed with how much he could do. He even saw the large telescope he could use and his inner dorkness was showing. He was grinning like a little kid at a candy store. "This is amazing Professor and I think the one in America would be better for me." He saw it is was in Arizona so it wasn't too bad. He could just take a little plane there and his parents would have to come and see it.

Aahhh the parents. "Actually professor could I give you my address and you can OWL my parents the information about the costs and such." I mean it seemed logical right? He was getting excited about this. He would tell Flamsteed after this summer about his experience. He was curious about this too.."Is there any Astrological profession to do in the Wizarding world?"

It seems your true passion is in the dream of becoming a wandmaker.

...Huh. That comment resonated deeply with her, and she tried her best to hold her tongue and stay quiet and focused as he continued to talk. Was he right, though? Was... wandlore really her passion, then, if she had taken a secondary interest in the other subjects to be a successful wandmaker in the first place, and then her love for the other subjects made sense and was perfectly okay? And... and maybe it could be okay as a wandmaker, then, because she would get to combine all of her favorite subjects into one grand profession.

At his last statement, Sophie returned the smile and instinctively moved to curl up in the chair she was sitting in as she opened her mouth to respond, but she first had enough awareness of where she was and who she was with to slip her wand from its holster and casually cast a quick, "Scourgify," on the bottoms of her shoes as she lifted them before letting them come in contact with the chair. Respect for his belongings and all, while still doing what she wanted. He could still reprimand her if he wanted, but now in a more comfortable sitting position, she pressed on with her reply.

"Thank you for your assessment, professor. I see what you mean. Wands... they're the coolest, aren't they? It takes a wicked sharp mind to create one without disastrous results, and there are so many different wand properties and combinations and they're so unique and have minds of their own," she explained with a smile, stroking the twisting carvings of the vine wand still in her hands. "Being able to create something so vital and powerful and important to each and every magical person in the wizarding world and making a difference like that. It's a cool thought, isn't it?"

Her smile had grown, and though she didn't expect him to share her enthusiasm, she did think he understood how important their wandmakers were, and thus was reading every crevice of his face to gauge his thoughts on the matter. "It's such a hard field. Crazy difficult. But..." She gazed down at her wand momentarily, pressing her lips together firmly as she chose her next words carefully, "I can do it. I may not one of the most brilliant minds you've ever encountered in your lifetime nor your brightest student, but I've got the ambition and the wits and the passion to be one of the best wandmakers in the whole world, I do know that. I'd do whatever it takes, just like I've done over the past four years to master the most important subjects for it." So... if she was so certain about that... perhaps it was the best way to go?

But astronomy.

"Y'know what you should do? You should hold a... thing, an event over the summers. Like, for alumni. I know - even though you'll never admit it aloud and you'll probably deny it profusely - that Lex and Lotus were your favorites, and m'sure plenty others over the years. Wouldn't it be cool to hold an annual event and get everyone to gather together? Geek out over astronomy? Watch Star Trek? A professional event, of course, no breaching your well-held views on keeping up your professionalism - but it'd be a cool way to keep people excited about astronomy even after they graduate and go off into the real world to pursue other interests. I mean, astronomy is super important to us all of our lives, it doesn't just stop being important after we graduate -" she stopped for a proper breath, then gave a shrug accompanied by exasperatedly flailing arms and added, "and that'd be a fun way to do it. That way, in the future, y'won't have to be completely devastated when your favorites leave, like you're gonna be when me and Tobes leave, 'cause you'd know we could always show up at your annual astronomy-is-fun-even-into-adulthood club." HEHEHE. She was teasing now, see?

"...M'just kidding. Well, mostly." But not really.

Raising an eyebrow and clearing his throat at the use of 'sir' - no need to correct the boy. Seemed nervous enough as it was, no need to make things worse. "During the term, yes," he nodded. "Although when time permits I sometimes return to London to visit this fantastic establishment called a dry cleaners. Have you ever been? For a people that have no magical blood, muggles certainly can work wonders with stains and wrinkles."

But that was beside the point...and incredibly off topic. Sort of. Certainly not what Mr. Adair had come to discuss.

"While your thanks is appreciated, it is also unnecessary," he chuckled. "You earned it, Mr. Adair. The entire staff at Hogwarts believes in you...so no pressure." He meant that to be more as a joke, a feeble attempt to lighten the mood...but it most likely just did the opposite. Mention of Mr. Hirase caused him to rub his temples. "And I understand that your new responsibilities as a prefect may bring about some complications with your friendship, just remember Neville Longbottom and the courage it takes to stand up to your friends."

No, he was not implying that the prefect should keep a close watch on his friend or that he should come down harder on the boy. Mostly, because Mr. Hirase could be overly ambitious and create double doors when he saw a window, that Mr. Adair not let his friend take advantage of his generous nature. The astronomer had already seen it done once.

Professor Botros would have his information on file, so he would need to stop by the old man's office later to get that.

"Well, you're looking at one profession in the wizarding world," he chuckled. "But there is also with at the Ministry, specifically in the departments of Mysteries and Environmental Protection. You'll find that a majority of wizarding astronomers seek to integrate their profession into the muggle world where scientific study is a focal point. Our society, and justly so, is focused on magic and not so much the science. However, a few of my colleagues from university are in the midst of establishing a wizarding organization - one that is attempting to expand on the magical aspect of the field."

HEHEHE. She was teasing now, see?

"...M'just kidding. Well, mostly." But not really.

He may not have shared her fascination with wands and wandlore, but he was grinning from ear to ear nonetheless - which probably gave off the impression that he really was fascinated by the field. Truth of the matter was that he was just giddy over seeing a student, no matter what age, showing their passion for something. Astronomy or not. Literally seeing their eyes light up and thus illuminating the future ahead of them was perhaps the biggest payoff as a professor. Scratch that, not just as an educator...but as a human being.

Was this....what being a parent felt like?

Woah there. Scratch that thought too. Parenting. Sweet solstice let's not get sidetracked, Flamsteed.

"Truly, Miss Brown, I believe you have found your calling and I have no doubt that you will succeed," he winked at the Ravenclaw. Perhaps if his own wand were to meet some sort of unfortunate accident - never on purpose, of course - he would be purchasing a wand from her one day. "I do not know how I can be of assistance with this dream, but if additional course work in the field of astronomy would be beneficial I can certainly arrange that." Plenty of independent study books on his shelf, for example.

She was right about that, he would never admit to such things out loud or really allow his mind to wander to such an assumption either. He liked to think he was impartial, but when students showed a vested interested in his subject - like Miss Brown was doing right now - it was hard for the scales not to be tipped a little.

"You know, that idea is rather appealing," he nodded, tapping his chin thoughtfully as he ventured a glance towards his bookshelf of science fiction novels. "Should my summer schedule allow for it, I may need to think up something." She also reminded him that he needed to get in contact with a few of his graduates about part-time job offer during the summer as a camp counselor at the National Space Centre. It was on his seemingly never ending to-do list.

Oh...wait...what? She was joking?

"Way to get my hopes up, Miss Brown," he said, laying on the sad kicked cruppy face rather thick and looking at his cup as he drummed against its sides.

Kace was relieved that the Professor was going to send his parents the information. I mean not that they would believe him but they needed to see it from the man himself, Professor Airey. He wondered if he needed to give the information but he didn't ask so he assumed he had it.

He heard Airey explaining about the Wizards use their scientific studies in the Wizarding World. "Now THAT sounds cool. I didn't know Department of Mysteries and Environmental Protection like involved Astronomy of some sorts." Maybe he would think of looking there. Once he heard his colleagues were gonna establish a wizarding organization for the field, Kace smiled and thought that was great to hear. "I would be happy to hear about that if all goes well." he grinned widely. "I think it would be better to work in the Muggle world when I get out of Hogwarts." It would be easier for his family and himself in the long run.

He meant that to be more as a joke, a feeble attempt to lighten the mood...but it most likely just did the opposite. Mention of Mr. Hirase caused him to rub his temples.

Setting another tie down in the 'wrinkle' pile, the Gryffindor looked up and gave his Head of House a goofy little smile. "I've been a few times, Professor," only with his mother though and not really by choice, either. "But I don't think I enjoy it as much as you, I don't have nearly enough ties for that," and with that he picked up another one for inspection. Could you believe that? He had so much studying, so much homework, so much STUFF he could have been doing but yet... He was sitting in the middle of Professor Flamsteed's office, on the floor, sorting ties. And you know what? He wouldn't just do it for anyone. But he was enjoying this moment, actually. Even though he was nervous about things. Even then.

The Gryffindor did widened his eyes at the 'entire staff' thing, though. Even dropped the tie down onto his knees before continuing with that. Gulp. "Uh, right... No Pressure," he forced a chuckle, though really, HOLY PRESSURE. Merlin. The Prefect tugged on his collar a little, though still forcing a small smile. Right. No pressure. Surely the man was trying to make things... lighter, but it definitely didn't work. Ha. Ha. Ha. No pressure. Ha. But the entire staff. Did that mean people like Culloden and Bellaire believed too? Because he doubted that. Bellaire probably didn't even believe in anything. Not even butter on toast. She was an odd one. And scary. And.... Yeah.

But Kevin though, that was something else. The Gryffindor shook his head to try and assure the Professor that things were alright on that front. Or at least they seemed alright. "Well at first I was afraid to tell him... So I didn't, not until he bumped into me on the train," So courageous. Oops. "And I don't think he took it too well at first, but then.. When I needed him most, something changed and well, I think we'll be alright, Professor." It was like Lotus said, the feasts would be the hard parts. And there wouldn't be too much time between rounds, but he'd have to make time because that's what friends did for each other. "Y'know, sometimes I think this might make us even closer. Like before, we could just hang out all the time! But now that I have to study-- I mean uh, study more," he corrected himself with a sheepish grin and a slight blush. "and do Prefect duties, it means we actually have to put an effort in.... Does that make any sense?"

But Neville Longbottom. Zander had a thing or two to say about that. "Speaking of Neville s--," almost adding a 'sir' in there but stopping himself, knowing what the clearing of the throat meant earlier. "I finished the book," he even smiled a little in pride at that. 'Cause it was a pretty big book and he had read it from cover to cover. THAT was a HUGE accomplishment!! And he didn't have to do it for a class or homework or anything. Just because he wanted to. And Professor Flamsteed wanted him to. "And well, I was just wondering... What happened that changed him? He used to be so quiet and kind of just... there. But something changed and I don't think that happens on it's own. So I was wondering if you knew, if you knew what made him become this great person?"

The professor's expressions while Sophie spoke made her very relieved, and she was proud both of herself and him - herself for working things out, and him for being so cool and understanding and not showing any disappointment that she wasn't going to actually directly choose a career path in astronomy. If she had this kind of conversation with Culloden, she knew he would have inevitably made her feel bad for choosing wandlore over potions. So... she was quite glad she had chosen to have this kind of talk with Flamsteed instead of the potions professor, yes. Very relieved indeed.

"I would love that, professor. I've gotten into the habit of buying a couple of subjects' books in the year ahead of mine since my second year, but I didn't do that for astronomy this year 'cause it's OWLs this year and I felt like I needed to pay special attention to subjects I'm not as..." Pause. Pause. Pause. Don't be cocky, Sophie Brown. "...I'm not as comfortable with." Safe assessment. "Y'know, work at getting ahead in those so I won't have anything to worry about come testing time. So though I feel like I've got yours under control and already know more than what's expected of me, I'd very much appreciate the additional course work. I could handle it. It'd be fun." Her gaze shifted up to the many books she knew he had in his cabinets and a smile crept onto her face. Would he let her BORROW those? Would he trust her that much?

Her face lit up further when he didn't completely shut down her idea about the summers, but then - noooooo, he didn't need to deflate like that! "Oh, sorry, professor, no - I didn't mean I was kidding about the summer thing - I was kidding about the part with me and Tobes, 'bout us being your favorites and you being heartbroken when we leave. I know you won't be. Much. Probably. Though we ARE kind of awesome. Just saying." Okay? Hehehehe.

Leaning back in his seat a bit, the Astronomy professor gave a low chuckle before speaking again. "There are plenty of job opportunities for those interested in astronomy," he nodded. But perhaps one thing at a time. First was getting the young man's extra lessons all set up. "The good news is that you still have time to think about all that. I'll see about getting you all the literature you need for some advanced studies and I'll owl your parents as soon as I can. You should have plenty to discuss with them over the holidays." Unless the Hufflepuff wasn't going home, in which case there wouldn't be a face-to-face discussion for a bit longer. "Assuming everyone is on board, we can begin in the new year." Happy 2086! Here are your new astronomy textbooks and science manuals!

Airey was baffled. BAFFLED! How could one not see the joy in witnessing the magic that was muggle dry cleaners?! It was almost a more fascinating study than going to Disneyland! Almost. The electronics and use of technology at these theme parks was breathtaking! And it was a real pity that a lot of the wizarding world were sitting on their high brooms with disinterest for such things. Airey was convinced that utilizing his knowledge of quantum physics would help him understand exactly how magic worked. Some of the studies his colleagues were doing on astronomical phenomena and their influence on magic was just a foot in the door to something bigger...

Realizing that he was zoning out, his eyes refocused and he nodded and grinned at Mr. Adair.

Nope. No pressure at all.

...

Mooooooving on...

"It makes perfect sense," he nodded as he set aside a tie. The professor also imagined that it would allow the two boys to grow, both more independent and as people. Sweet solstice did Mr. Hirase need to grow and the astronomer lamented that he had failed the boy. At least Maddox, quite the man's opposite in methodology, was having a more dramatic and speedy impact. "I have noticed an increase in your marks already, Mr. Adair. Not just in Astronomy. Take pride in the fact that the extra efforts are paying off." So salutes to you!

Leaning his elbow on his ironing board, he listened to the prefect's concern and replied with a playful shrug of the shoulders. "I'm afraid that the only person who can offer you an honest answer to that would be Neville Longbottom himself," he nodded. Although he could reflect on his own personal experience - from Gryffindor delinquent to moderately refined and caring about more than just himself Gryffindor delinquent. "What is important to remember is that courage, the personal sort that you are asking about that came about his change, is unique to each person. I don't suppose you are familiar with Biswas-Diener, are you?"

Quite the Ravenclaw response and the astronomer couldn't help himself but laugh. "Just try not to become complacent, Miss Brown," he winked. Something that he had not really struggled with as a student seeing as he had never had a goal of being efficient in all the subjects at Hogwarts. Only three subjects, really, and solely because they matched up with his interests so studying for them was not a chore and actually the sort of mind stimulation that he thrived on.

Glancing over his shoulder at his personal library, he read over the titles of the astronomy texts to see if there was anything in particular that stood out. Something that could supplement the term's coursework, but nothing was jumping out at the moment. "I'll take a look at my collection this weekend, so don't be surprised if a book or two should drop unceremoniously on to your lap in the Great Hall or your common room some day." Assuming he didn't stop by to drop things off personally, that is.

Aaaaaaaaaaand not this part of the conversation was becoming a little uncomfortable - which meant it was time to loosen up the tie a little bit and squirm in his seat just a little. Wiggle wiggle wiggle.

...

Silence.

"Never, professor," Sophie smiled. "Remaining stagnant isn't my thing. M'always looking to get better and be better. I'll never be the best, but I know I can keep finding areas to improve upon. There's always something to work on, y'know? In all areas of life. I don't think there's such a thing as perfection or anything."

She was suddenly aware that she was doing it again - trying to prove herself to Flamsteed and make sure he didn't have a reason to think poorly of her. Annoying, it was, and she was grateful when the conversation continued moving along. She was beaming now, at the talk of books for her, and she nodded her approval a bit too eagerly. "Thank you, professor. I would love that." ALL THE BOOKS.

...And then she'd made him uncomfortable. Merlin. It wasn't a difficult thing to do, she knew, so she tried to just play it cool and ease his tension by chiming, "See, that's what I was kidding 'bout. Me and Tobes 'n stuff, 'cause I didn't want to make you feel all weird and obligated to say anything. Y'don't have to say anything at all. I'll go." She rose, then, and saluted him with a cheesy grin. "Thanks for everything, by the way. I know you're not obligated to give, like, pep talks or anything, but you're good at that kinda thing. Thanks for it."

She'd just see herself out, yeah?

"What is important to remember is that courage, the personal sort that you are asking about that came about his change, is unique to each person. I don't suppose you are familiar with Biswas-Diener, are you?"

Zander continued sifting through the ties, taking a couple of minutes to inspect one before carefully setting it in one of the piles and then moving on to grab another. It was nice actually, gave him something to do with his hands so he wasn't as restless. There was always something weird about going to talk to Professor's one on one. Even if it was just Professor Flamsteed, the extra task helped ease him up a bit. Gave him some mindless work to do.

The Gryffindor looked up again at what the Professor had to say next and... "You have?" Zander hadn't been paying all too much attention to his current marks actually... He was focusing on the bigger picture at the moment. As in exams. Those scary daunting exams that he would most likely fail. That would be bad. Very, very bad. "But I really have been trying to do some extra studying whenever I can," a lot of it too. More studying than he had ever done in his life. "Kevin said he'd help me with potions, and the new transfer- Damien and I are doing a trade off where I help him with Transfiguration and he helps me with Defense... And Lottie--" She had given him instructions to relay a message to this particular Professor, had she not? "She sent me a copy of her old notes." And though the man hadn't really asked for this incredibly long explanation of the Prefect's efforts... It helped saying all of this stuff out loud. Made him feel a little less nervous than before (though not much because still OWLs ).

"And uh, by the way sir... About Lotus, she told me to tell you that she really does miss your lessons... And you." She had given him instructions on that front. He must've reread that letter at least fifty million times. Cherished them, really.

Anyways, moving on from that. Not going to get all feelsy here in the office today. That sort of thing made Airey uncomfortable, yeah? Zander respected that. Made him kind of uncomfortable too. Same on that front, really. "Biswhat-who?" Uh. No couldn't say he had. "I-uh- I mean... I don't think I've gotten that far in my History of Magic book, yet Professor." That's who they were talking about right? Another one of Harry Potter's friends or something? Biswhatshisface. Maybe the name did sound a little familiar? Although, he couldn't really confirm that at all. HA. MAYBE HE WOULD FAIL HIS OWLS AFTER ALL. La la la. No hope.

OOC: you can post inside the office now :3 welcome!
Well, hoped. But that was information he didn't need to know, especially because he was friends with her uncle and could always tell on her. No. Let him just think she thought he wasn't there.

It was a rhetorical question anyway, right? If not, it was going to be now.

"Thanks." She said, entering his office and looking around because she's never been there. Hm. It all just proved how strange this professor was, which explained why he was the Gryffindor Head of House.

Agatha did a full spin to face professor Flamsteed again and stared at him. Was she willing to make him uncomfortable with all of the staring? Probably. Her main reason for that, though, was that she wanted to know why he wanted to see her and she wanted to know now.
