Default the Office of Professor Flamsteed

Perhaps the first thing you notice as you enter Professor Flamsteed's office is that it is...clean. Ridiculously clean. While he is not exactly obsessive compulsive about cleanliness, Professor Flamsteed highly values organization and keeps everything in a specific location. Needless to say, if one of his quills is at an odd angle ... he will notice. The wood cabinets above his desk are filled with all sorts of reference books on all branches astronomy on the left side while the right side is filled with works of muggle science fiction ranging from Douglas Adams to H.G. Wells to Robert Heinlein and everyone in between. His desk is mostly empty except for some black accents and a comfortable looking pink pillow where the professor's pet rock, Pebbles, is currently resting.

On the walls are a few framed pieces of abstract line and paint splatter artwork that Professor Flamsteed has collected over the years along with a drawing given to him by a student in a black frame. There is a black sofa up against one of the walls with a pet house on the floor beside it where Pebbles sleeps when not on the pink pillow on the desk. To the right of the black sofa and is a wooden closet where Professor Flamsteed keeps a few freshly pressed suits from his extensive collection, just in case, and to the left of this is a rather impressive looking tie display case. Located opposite of Professor Flamsteed's desk is yet another display case, but this one is filled with all sorts of muggle science fiction models that he has built and painted himself - a hobby of his when he is not busy teaching, grading, or researching. To the left of this case is what appears to be a muggle telephone booth, but upon further inspection of it you will find Herschel scurrying about within.

OOC: please do not post here without having been invited in by Professor Flamsteed from the waiting area or else risk your post being unceremoniously deleted.

Since that is what they had done the last time she had stopped by. "You can meet Hershel."

He then gave his wand a flick towards the door to unlock his office and have the door swing open towards them.

"After you."

OOC: you can go ahead and post inside the office now. Welcome <3
Adelaide beamed at his reaction. It made her happy that someone enjoyed her baking so much. Well, a lot of people seemed to nowadays. "That sounds lovely." She arched an eyebrow at his last comment. "Hershel?" Who the heck was Hershel?

She got up from her chair and entered the office. She took a seat across from his desk taking in the office. Everything was the same since last term...aside from the telephone booth. Adelaide turned to her bag and pulled out a container filled with brownies.

Closing the door behind them - for brownie noming privacy - the astronomer gestured towards the muggle telephone booth. "That is Hershel," he explained. "Just got him over the summer. With Pebbles disappearing last term, I figured I really should expand my pet selection to something a little more...practical." And, you know, living.

He quickly slipped into his seat and summoned two cups of tea, levitating one in front of Miss Adams, and one for himself. His blue eyes hastily fell on the tin she removed from her bag. Ooooooooooh there they were. Hello beautiful things. "So, Miss Adams, have a good summer?" He glanced at the container again. "And congratulations on surviving your OWLs."

Adelaide's eyes followed where he was pointing, and they went wide with shock momentarily when she saw it was the telephone booth. Okay. A telephone booth named Hershel. That was weird. Even for Flamsteed. More practical? Living? "Er - I'm glad you found something professor." Had he really lost his marbles for good?

She set the tin of brownies down on the desk as the cups of tea levitated over to them. Addi smiled, as she grabbed her cup of tea. "I did. I interned at Ollivander's actually." That was definitely fun. Lot of grunt work, but still fun. Even with Grumpy. She let out a little chuckle. "Thanks. I'm glad I made it."

Ah yes, there were always a few students who elected to do such a thing. Introductions and the sort. He could appreciate the gesture - just as long as fancy gifts were not included. They made him feel uncomfortable.

"Well, Miss Evans, why don't you come on inside and we can have a spot of tea while discussing your textbook questions," he offered as he stepped to the side and gestured inside his office.

OOC: you can go ahead and post inside the office now. Welcome <3

Slowly and without any sort of sudden movement, Airey removed his wand from his suit jacket's pocket in anticipation for what might be ahead. While he knew although would deny if asked that he was no match for Medea in a duel and her reflexes were like the cats she adored so much, he wasn't going to let her get to him THAT easily.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

Alright. So she could take him down that easily. Literally.

Jumping with surprise, and cursing himself for not using Homenum Revelio, Airey stumbled backwards and landed with his back against his door, left arm raised above his head, and his wand arm cross in front of him with his palm over his heart - wand pressed against him.

"P-Positive," he replied once he caught his breath. She HAD asked him a question and there was no mistaking her voice.

Hope beamed as she made her way into the office. Success! Her eyes scanned the room and her first impression was that it was far too clean. Yes, she believed in clean, but this was almost obsessive compulsive in a way. She notice the fish bowl sitting on the desk, and a small smile kept on her face. Must pet fish! As she looked around further she noticed the combination of magical and muggle. Interesting. She also notice a rock on a pillow, odd, and another creature of pet form. Adorable. Yes, the assessment of his office was complete and she had concluded it was all very interesting.

Now she had to find a way to position herself closer to the bowl, but she knew if she tried to go in for the petting too fast, then she may get kicked out. That would be detrimental to her plans. No, best to start out with some light conversation about the classes text.

"So about the text. I was rather confused...may be I won't be the best at Astronomy." In fact, she did struggle just a bit. "I don't know what confuses me the most. Really, the whole chapter confused me and that was just the basics." Yes, because first chapters were always supposed to be the easiest chapters, and yet, it was tough. "Could you lend me a bit of insight?"

Airey grinned and decided to take his new pet out of his cage. He seemed friendly enough. What was the worst that could happen? "Didn't find him all by my lonesome," he said with just the slightest hint of pride in his voice. "Professor Romanos is the real expert with these sorts of things. Helped me pick Hershel out." Along with his very special first necktie. It had really been a magical moment.

"Did you really?! Congratulations!" he cheered as he fumbled around with the lock on the telephone booth cage. "You thinking about perhaps studying wandlore after Hogwarts?" He only knew the basics himself, but it seemed like a fascinating field.

Gesturing towards the empty seat opposite his at his desk, Airey walked around and sat down himself. "Fancy a cup of tea?" he asked as he summoned two tea cups. "Or is hot chocolate more to your liking?" This could tell him oh so very much about this particular student. Mhmm.

He chuckled softly while shaking his head. "Now now, if you go into a particular subject with a negative thought process already established in your mind, then you are setting yourself up to fail. Butterbeer is half full," he said before giving her a quick salute, summoning the Astronomy textbook with his wand with the other hand. Flipping through the table of contents and preface, he arrived at the first chapter and turned it around for her to take a peak at more easily. "Why study Astronomy?" he read, his eyes lighting up a bit because, well, for him this was one of the more fascinating aspects of the subject. His personal favorite fact. "Let's not worry about the text for now. I want you to think from your gut and your assumptions. What you understand as of right now." Even if she knew very little about the subject - they were all at school for a reason after all. To learn. "Why do you want to study Astronomy? Besides it being a required course, of course."

Hope took the seat and gave him a polite smile. "Tea please and thank you. Two sugars. No cream." Hot chocolate was for little kids and cold winters. Definitely not a meet and greet kind of drink. She stared at the fishbowl out of the corner of her eye. How she longed to run a single finger of the slimy scaly surface of that fish. All in good time.

She shrugged somewhat apologetically. "It's not really intended to be a negative thought process. I'm just not really grasping the basics which frightens me. If I can't handle the basics, how can I manage to advance?" It was a positive thought with negative sprinkles. She wanted to succeed, but struggled with learning basics, therefore cannot achieve her goal of succeeding. She stared down at the book and looked at the first page of the first chapter. Why would someone study Astronomy? Hmmm.. "Well, I suppose that the positioning of planets and stars could have some effect upon the magical abilities of a witch or wizard. That could be a reason someone would take up studying Astronomy. Or maybe someone just enjoys watching the planets shift and align and stars shine and fade out."

She pushed the book aside for the moment. Why did she want to study Astronomy? "I want to know what's beyond the simple view of the human eye." Did that make sense? Maybe she should clarify. "If I looked up into the night sky tonight and observed it without a telescope, just me and my human eyes, I would see a star or two. Maybe more. However, I know that out there in that great big sky there are a million more stars and I want to see, if not all of them, most of them." Yes, that seemed like a better explanation. Still maybe a little confusing, but better. "I want to discover what is beyond. There are eight main planets but what about the dwarf planets and the stars? That's why I want to study Astronomy. To discover the unknown." Well, the unknown to her at least. She was certain someone, somewhere, probably knew something about everything out there in the universe.

Unlocking the cage, Airey swung the door open and stuck his arm inside to allow Hershel to crawl onto it once he had crawled out of his swing. Only the ferret had other intentions and LEAPED out of the cage and began to scurry around all over the floor in true wiggle worm ferret fashion. Right, well then, he was just going to sit down at his desk until Hershel calmed down. "Don't mind him, he just gets overly excited when he is let out," he said as he sat down, giving Pebbles a reassuring pat on her rocky head.

Summoning the tea, he couldn't help but raise a brow at the young lady when she explained how she doctored hers up. He had always been more of a straight tea drinker - nothing added to taint the flavor. He did, on occasion, add honey to his cup, but he was now slightly put off by honey. For, you know, whatever reason. "Certainly," he said as he searched his tea cabinet for the individually wrapped sugar cubes, plopping two into the cup and then leaning back in his seat with his own.

Ah, fear of the unknown. Clearly not a Gryffindor. Clearly a Ravenclaw, however.

He nodded a bit to her first response. Unfortunately, it was a field of study that he personally was very skeptical about. "There are some wizarding astronomers that theorize about the connection between magic and movement of certain celestial objects. I actually had students partake in a study during one of my lessons last term. Solar eclipses and their pull on magic. I cannot honestly say that the results were conclusive, but we did have a few first years blowing up entire stands of clowns when they were meant to simply knock one over." But he wasn't too sure that that was really her speaking just now. Seemed more of the sort of answer a young witch or wizard would answer in hopes of appealing to their professor.

What she said next, however, this was what he was looking for and brought a very big grin to his face. "To boldly go where no man has gone before," he said while looking please with himself. Any time he got to quote Star Trek brought on such a reaction. "You speak with the same integrity and curiosity that Plato himself wrote in The Republic. Astronomy compels the soul to look upward, and leads us from this world to another," he continued, his right hand slowly tracing through the air as he looked off in the distance. "Very good, Miss Evans. Your curiosity will get you very far in my subject. Now, if you will indulge me for just a moment, I would like to tell you why I elected to pursue Astronomy as a permanent career." He paused to take a sip from his cup and then set it down on the desk. "It is quite simple really. The universe is in us. The atoms that make up my body and your body and every human body all are traceable to those very stars you look up and see every night - and during the day in the case of the Sun. So, when I look up at the sky, I feel something. There is a level of connectivity that is unlike anything else I have experienced. I know that I am an active participant in the goings on of activities and events around me simply by living."

And now he was done, or so he thought, and picked up his cup to take a nice long sip from it. Oh yes, that felt very good on the throat. Too bad he was put off on honey for the time being.

Hope nodded as she watched the furry creature move around on the floor. "I see." She didn't though. Her first pet was the purple pygmy puff name Poppy and it had never been caged before AND all it seemed to want to do was squeak loudly and slightly obnoxiously at her, other people, and other puffs. Actually, he squeaked at EVERYTHING! It was one of the reasons she had chosen not to bring him. The ferret, however, was adorable and silent. Maybe she would get one. She watched his rather...eccentric behavior and a question about the rock he pet boiled to her lips....maybe another time.

"Thank you," she said taking the cup and giving it a little swirl to stir the sugar just a bit. Wouldn't want to be drinking that stuff in the end. It would lead to one hyper Hope and a few agitated Ravenclaws.

"Interesting. However, that could have had something more to do with their year rather than the alignment of the planets. You should really get a control group and experiment again." There she went, rattling of her favorite form of anything. Planning. She was also feeling rather old beyond her years questioning the students age. She was nothing more than a first year herself, which also meant that she knew exactly how...untrained her own magic was. "Just a suggestion. Not intending to mean that personally towards you or your teaching ability."

"Exactly!" She was quite excited that he could see where she was coming from and as he disclosed her reasons for becoming a professional, she inched her cup a little closer to the fish bowl as if some how this would help her obtain her ultimate goal. She took another sip of the tea and nodded. "I understand and agree. It makes sense when you say it like that. However, how does this apply to the text and the class in general. We're study the stars not the connectivity that we feel to them..." Was she right? It sounded wrong to her ears to an extent, but that was the truth. "How does the amount of moons Uranus has correlate to the feeling we get when we study the moons?"

Airey smiled as Hershel scurried about the office while trying not to get up right that moment and start rolling one of his lint rollers all over the place. Miss Evans would not have his undivided attention were he do to that and, well, with the ferret out of its cage now it would be counter productive to lint roll now. Fur would just get all over the place again. Best to wait once the creature was caged again. Instead, to keep his hands occupied, he gave Pebbles another few pats on her rocky head and gave her a scratch under her floppy attached ears.

Airey laughed, and nearly choked on his tea. "I am afraid that you have mistaken me for one of those astronomers," he said while shaking his head. "Certainly not my study. I only included it in my lesson as a personal favor to a colleague. Just who had the more powerful magic was seemingly random regardless." And he gave the rest of that discussion a dismissive wave. Not his research to worry over. Although...his Summoning Charm did seem to power up just a bit thanks to the annular eclipse. Or perhaps it was just all a mind game. Eh.

"Well, one could say that when we study the nature of all things in the universe we are in fact studying ourselves," he mused. See, science could be philosophical if one were to look outside of the box. WAY outside of it. "But, for the most part, it doesn't correlate at all." And now he was chuckling. "I certainly don't feel anything in knowing that Uranus has 27 known natural satellites with the Earth has only one. That being said, Uranus' orbit around the sun effects solar variability and could, theoretically, cause the amount of solar radiation to fluctuate and this, again theoretically, influences just how much the Earth's surface warms and evaporates water and other things." He paused and took another long sip from his up. "It's as Newton said. Everything that happens causes an equal and opposite reaction and that reaction causes something else and so on and so on. By studying all the parts, no matter how small, we are able to see how all the pieces fit together and see just how connected things really are." He leaned back in his seat now to observe the girl a bit more. "You may not feel anything emotionally, no emotional attachment to what is going on or exists up there, but that does not mean that those very things are not influencing you in other ways. Ways you do not even notice."

Along with his very special first necktie. It had really been a magical moment.

"Did you really?! Congratulations!" he cheered as he fumbled around with the lock on the telephone booth cage. "You thinking about perhaps studying wandlore after Hogwarts?" He only knew the basics himself, but it seemed like a fascinating field.
Phew. It was an actual pet, not a telephone booth. Good. Flamsteed hadn't completely lost his marbles then. Addi smiled. "He's adorable. I've always thought ferrets were interesting creatures." She raised an eyebrow at the Romanos comment. "That's great. Gotta make sure you have the right fit when it comes to a pet." She definitely did with her fat lazy cat.

Adelaide continued to smile. "Thanks." She watched him mess with the lock and shrugged. "I dunno. I loved the seminar we had last term, but my interests are kind of dragging me every which way at some point." Part of the reason she was here. Maybe talking it out would help.

Airey leaned across the desk a bit to whisper to the Slytherin baker. "Don't let him hear you say that. Goes right to his head," he laughed under his breath. "Do you have any pets yourself, Miss Adams?" Because he might ask you a few questions to avoid having to go down to the see the new Creatures professor. Even if he did want to go borrow more top hats.

Still had the one from the opening feast here in his office, actually.

"Well, you are still young and have plenty of time to decide what you want to do," he nodded. He, on the other hand, had known since he was very small and had jumped off his first roof that he had wanted a career in Astronomy. He eyed the brownies for a fraction of a second before snatching one up and taking a nice big bite out of it. "Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, just as stellar as I remember them."

Hope nodded. "Well. Shall you ever feel like becoming one of those astronomers, as you put it, just keep in mind that a well established control group well help you out." It was all science in the end. Hope took another sip of her tea and scooted closer to the edge of her chair. Her eye we straining to not just stare at the fish swimming in its bowl.

Hope chewed on her lip as she thought his words over and there was a lot of words. Studying the stars is studying themselves. Newton's laws. It almost sounded like a basic rehash of a muggle science class she had taken. She took a glance at the fish bowl. "Okay. So, if the stars have influence upon us in ways that we don't notice and everything that happens causes an equal reaction. Then what reaction would I get if I were to, let's just say, pet your fish? What reaction would that cause, that is equal or opposite? How would the stars have influence on that?" Did that make sense? Maybe not. "Or, what about what you decide to eat or how you decide to spend your free time? Does the stars have influence upon that stuff. Those are things that I wouldn't notice that could be influenced, correct?" She tapped the cover of the text. "What influence you to chose this textbook for our learning purposes?" Was it all in the stars?

Addi leaned forward, eyebrow raised, as Flamsteed did. She giggled lightly. "I'll do my best. Don't need a ferret with a big ego." She loved joking around like this with Flamsteed. It made the lessons more enjoyable when the time came. She nodded. "I do. A very fat black and white cat named Oreo." Yes unoriginality.

"I feel like I have to decide now. Gotta know what I want to do after Hogwarts right?" If not that would ease her mind so much. Addi honestly didn't know what she wanted to do anymore. She laughed at his reaction to the brownies. "I'm glad. I've got a few new recipes I might need you to taste test." Because he seemed to enjoy her baking and he would tell her the truth.

If he ever felt like it. Yeaaaaah he would think on that thought for about a fraction of a second. Sure, the moon influenced the tides and the fields of meteorology and he was debating how best to present a lesson or two on atmospheric electricity, but there was no sound scientific evidence to back up some of his colleagues with their solar eclipse/magic theory. Still, he gave the Ravenclaw a nod of appreciation.

Airey tried not to wince a little at her next question. "You are still speaking of emotional attachments based on decisions, and such questions would be better directed towards your Divination professor, Professor Elwood," he nodded while trying not to look too annoyed with the subject. Just because Jupiter was passing through Orion, or whatever terminology they used, did not mean that he was going to have a good day. Or whatever his reading was for the day. He never bothered to check that part of the Prophet. He took a glance towards the textbook and laughed. "I picked this text, because I helped write it," he said as he flipped to the cover page and pointed to his name among the list of contributors.

But something else she had mentioned caught his attention. Something about petting his fish. "Do you want to pet my bass?"

A feline. She owned a feline. Had she used a lint roller recently by any chance? Maybe he should offer her one. Getting a ferret was a baby step towards general acceptance of creatures...but felines still made his skin crawl. Right off the bone. No matter what Medea said about them. And Miss Adams had a LARGE feline, which clearly put it even further into the beast category.

So, yeah, he kind of forgot to respond to her talking about her pet. Oops.

He took his time thinking about her next question. Giving advice about the future was difficult and Merlin help him if he messed up a student by giving them the wrong advice. "Well, yes and no," he nodded as he rubbed the back of his neck, still deep in thought. "The captain of their house team may have decided that they are going to play professional quidditch, but then on the eve of their graduation get an injury that prevents that dream, that decision, from happening. Still, another opportunity will arise. One that still utilizes their knowledge of the game and athleticism." Much easier telling that story without putting his personal self into things. "All I am saying, Miss Adams, is that instead of focusing on what to do with your life, focus on what you love. What your strengths are. Opportunities will present themselves to you. Your passion for baking, just as an example, could send you to culinary school after Hogwarts." And there she went proving his point some more. "Write a baking book, perhaps."

He paused and leaned forward on his elbows a bit. "You just name the place and I'll be there as your unofficial taste tester." Just as long as it wasn't in conjunction with a Potions assignment too.

She often got the blame when sweet things went 'missing' for whatever reasons. Reasons that typically the astronomer was the only one who knew the truth to.

"Then come on in," he gestured with his free hand. "Just finishing boiling some hot water."
Pleased that he had a sweet tooth like the Headmistress, Lux followed the Professor into his office and looked around. Everything was so neat and tidy, and she could see what appeared to be a big collection of books. Seemed that Professor Flamsteed liked order, so she would try not to make a mess in his office. "Who is Pebbles?" She assumed it was a pet, but she saw no animal in the room. "And thank you for the tea. Are you feeling okay now?" Hopefully his back wasn't hurting anymore.

Shutting the door behind them, Airey proceeded to walk towards his desk while paying no mind to Hershel in the phonebooth cage. The creature was fast asleep anyway. "This is Pebbles," he said as he gave the pet rock on his desk a pat on the head. "She was my only pet before Hershel. Captain doesn't really count as a pet since he is my best mate." The fish tank, however, was no where to be seen in the office at this moment.

Summoning two tea cups with his wand, he slowly opened up one of the overhead cabinets and pulled out a tin of tea with his slightly wrinkles hands. "I wouldn't say I am as fit as a pulsar, but I'm feeling a bit better," he nodded as he rubbed his chin with his other hand. Merlin, he needed to figure out how to shave and fast. "You just pick whatever suits your fancy from that tin of tea. And please, have a seat."

He was going to take his time sitting down.

Sander cradled the fruit of basket, plate of English scones and the container of fish food in his arms as he entered Professor Flamsteed office. He discreetly look around the Professor's office and liked what he saw.

"Um....Professor where do you want me to put these down?" he asked the Professor. He could totally put it down anywhere but he didn't want to assume.

Walking behind the young man, Airey couldn't help but wonder why he hadn't opted to levitate some of the items to make it easier on him. As long as everything got inside, right?

"Just over there on my desk will do," he said while pointing with his cane. Oh, look at that, still had some balance left. "Be careful not to knock over Pebbles though."

Hope wanted to shrug. What did she know about Divination anyway? As far as she was concerned it was a bunch of guess work. And Professor Elwood didn't have a fish for petting. No she did not. As for the text she looked down at his name and then back up at him. He helped write this torture device? It all made sense now. "Well, that just means I can come up here and ask you questions since you were so involved in helping create this book." And she would because she wasn't going to fail.

She jumped up. "Oh, yes! Please can I? Let me run one finger over that small scaly and slimy body! I've pet fish before. It's simply amazing how different it is from petting a cat or pygmy puff. A completely utterly different feeling indeed. Tell me, how many people go around and boat about petting a fish. Not many!" She was odd and in the course of her words she had found her hand hovering over the tank he fingers wiggling in anticipation.

Pleased that the Divination-esque questions were done, or seemed to be, for the time being, Airey relaxed a little into his seat and went to sip more on his tea when he found his cup empty. "More tea?" he asked, glancing up at her. He was going to make himself some more. "Certainly," he chuckled. "That is why I am here, whether or not I helped write your textbook or not."

He jumped a little when she shot out of her seat like a rocket. Woozers, she really was passionate about touching his bass. "On one condition," he said with a smirk while holding up his index finger for emphasis. "You must beat me at a staring contest and, I must warn you, only one has ever defeated me and that is Pebbles." He pulled the tank away from her, just out of reached, and looked back at the Ravenclaw expectantly. "So, what do you say? Challenge accepted?"

"Okay, the desk it is," Sander walked over and was about to place everything he was carrying on to it when he heard the Professor caution him to not knock Pebbles over. Pebbles? Who was Pebbles? Was it a kitten? A mouse? Sander looked all over the table for the creature but couldn't see it anywhere.

Then his eyes fell on a small rock. Pebbles? Rock?...was this small rock, Pebbles. 'Ooooakkkayyy....he gives names to his rocks. I guess to each his own,' Sander thought to himself. Taking great care that he was nowhere near the vicinity of Pebbles, Sander leaned over and laid the fruit basket, plate of scones and the container of fish food on the table.

When he straightened up, he felt a twinge of pain in his lower back. "Okay this back ache thing can't be infectious.' he thought to himself as he placed his hands behind his back and arched his back to relax the muscles there.

"Is there anything I can do for you before I leave, Professor?" Sander enquired. He knew that the Professor was busy and didn't want to take up too much of his time.

The professor's expression didn't go unnoticed by Adelaide. It was quite obvious he had an aversion to cats. She was kind of curious why. They were some of the most interesting animals she'd ever come across. All of them with different personalities. But best not to ask him why he was uncomfortable. Especially with what she wanted to talk to him about.

Addi sat, sipping her tea, listening to what Flamsteed had to say. Everything he said made absolute sense. It wasn't going to make the decision making process any easier when the time came though. "A few of my friends want to play quidditch and they have back-ups so I understand the importance of that." Was it kind of weird that quidditch was her back-up instead of the other way around?

What she loved. That's kind of where her problem came in. "That's one of the things I was considering...but I also love Charms. And recently I've found I love helping out the younger students and I've wanted to be a teacher for ages." She bit her lip. She wasn't trying to be difficult. It was just how her brain processed things.

Addi smiled. "Will do professor."

The fish tank, however, was no where to be seen in the office at this moment.

OHMYGOSH. He had a pet rock.

Lux found that so endearing for some reason. She went over to the deck and gave Pebbles a pat as well, since that was what was proper to do with pets. "Is Captain a fish?" She had seen that the Professor had fish, but she had not met any of them before. Fish were pretty and somehow looking at them swimming around in an aquarium made her feel happy and peaceful.

Aaah, tea time. Thanking him, she said as she went about selecting her tea and sitting down. "So do you usually have back problems? Or is it because you are being affected like a lot of the other people at Hogwarts?" She hoped he did not mind her asking him, because she was curious. "I don't understand why so many people here are looking OLDER now, and I'm the same as ever. All my friends are getting wrinkles and grey hair." Maybe Professor Flamsteed would know what was going on.

Hobbling towards his desk himself, Airey found himself winded and instead leaned against his telephone booth shaped cage. Sticking his finger inside to give Hershel one of the more pathetic sorts of pets on the head that he had ever given the ferret - he had issues with the fur still - he turned towards Mr. Strand when the boy spoke. "Nope. Not at this moment in time," he said while shaking his head. Unless he wanted to help him cross the street sometime. Wait. What? Never mind. Where had THAT thought come from?

Shaking his head at his own insanity, he pulled his finger out of the cage and leaned on his cane some more. "Unless you have anything to ask of me, I should allow you to get back to what I can only assume is a busy schedule." Teenage boys always did have busy lives, if he recalled correctly. He knew what he had been busy doing as a teenager. Heh.

Now that he thought about it, quidditch and becoming an astronomer were rather similar. So much hinged on not suffering an injury that would forever put you out of commission. "Having a back up plan is always a stellar idea," he nodded and essentially repeated himself. "I wish I had been wise enough to think about that. Then again, what is life without a little risk, yeah?" The latter part of his thought was said as more of an afterthought. A means to cover up the way his eyes had momentarily zoned out.

Ah, teaching. It was something that he personally had never imagined he would get into and yet here he was. Teaching at a school where on the day of his graduation he had never been so glad to leave so he could blast off into space. Life had a funny way of working out like that. "I've noticed your skill with Charms," he nodded eagerly. "You have a lot of options for you, Miss Adams. I will be excited to see where they take you."

"Stellar!" he grinned back as he glanced at his sundial watch briefly. Sweet solstice they had been speaking for a while. He grabbed another brownie and stuffed half of it into his mouth, chewed, and spoke again. "These really are delicious, but surely you have something better to do than sit here and watch me eat your delicious creations?"

Blowing on his cup, he took a sip and his face contorted as the delicious liquid burnt his tongue. Should have blown on it a bit more. "He is now, but wasn't always," he replied with his tongue slightly sticking out of his mouth. Which clearly answered her question.

Setting his tea down on his desk for the time being, he instinctively rubbed his back at her question. "I've had back problems for years and years now, but ever since I came to Hogwarts I had been doing some strengthening exercises that were helping quite a bit. Nothing more than a fluke." Although it did concern him that others were having the same problem. "Everyone should make sure to place the proper enchantments on their bags. Ought to help a bit if you don't feel like you are carrying around so much extra weight."

Because textbooks could be ridiculously heavy.

He rubbed the back of his neck as she continued. Grey hair...yeah...he was getting his fair share...wrinkles tool. Not to mention stubble which, if he didn't figure out this whole shaving thing, was going to turn into a beard soon. "Stress can cause all that," he nodded. He knew he was under a lot of extra stress these days. "Have you noticed them being more stressed than usual?" Perhaps drinking a Calming Drought every now and then will help with stress levels...he should go ask Cece for one maybe.

Or try brewing it himself...which could be amusing.
