Default Office of Professor Abraham Botros

After being allowed to walk through the two polished doors, you're most likely to be welcomed by professor Botros' Crup, Feo. The office is relatively larger than expected, with bookshelves lining the walls, along with artifacts, figures of runes of all alphabets (duh), and several copies of The Pocket-hanky Ultimate Board. To the right and right after you see a basket with a bunch of walking canes inside, there is a small coffee table with a bunch of rolls and parchment on top, a vase of red roses is always perched up too and professor Botros sometimes is seen watering or wiping their leaves gently with his hands. Next to that coffee table is a higher stool with nothing hovering over it anymore.

There are two elegant chairs facing each other and placed right in front of the main desk in the room where you're supposed to sit once Ab ushers you to do so. His desk is as tidy as it is crowded with parchments, books, his spare glasses, and colorful pieces of clothes that you soon will discover it's an unfolded pocket-hanky. To the far end of the desk, safely away from the guests, sit several family muggle pictures of a young man with glasses, and a young woman leaning against that young man. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that this is professor Botros fifty years ago, and then him with his beautiful wife.

On the back of the big door, there is a new parchment with a cute doodle on it. It's the first student souvenir Ab brought from one of his 'kids', to the side of that paper hanging a small piece of wood, and then a pendant shaped as a box with some dust inside. Recently, there's a letter in runic alphabet stuck on the door as well.

OOC: please do not post in here until after posting in the seating area thread and being invited in by the professor himself. Posting in here without an invitation will result in deleting your post, and you getting a frowny face from me.

If he noticed the range of expressions on Cutty's face at all, he did and said nothing to show it. Instead, he offered the younger boy a wide smile and a cheerful wave.

"Hi Cutty!" the Hufflepuff responded, with that kind of chirpiness that some would kind annoying and others, refreshing. He kept looking at Cutty and just opened his mouth again, perhaps to ask about that concert his mother(???) had mentioned when he, Cutty and Forrest had seen each other at Diagon Alley, or perhaps not. He wasn't ever sure of what he would say until he actually said it.

But before he could say anything, the telltale sound of Botros' cane!shuffle reached his ears, and Tobias looked back up again.

"Hi Professor Botros!" Toby greeted the man as he got back up to his feet. He nodded at the elderly man's words, and then paused as he himself glanced over at Cutty and back to Botros again, before smiling. "We didn't come together, no. But I don't mind talking to you with Cutty in the room. We're friends." He didn't consider that maybe Cutty had wanted to talk to Botros alone.

'Together?'

'Together?'

'Together?'

The word echoed in Cutty's warped little mind and he almost had forgotten to make his disgusted face. Almost. Though it was a bit delayed in showing itself. It was as though he was deeply against doing anything together with Tobias, but the boy was trying too hard in my opinion. Cutty gave serious thought to using one of his fictitious names when he realized the Professor didn't know him. A good thing. But for some reason, he just wasn't feeling like Elliot Summerfield that day, so he decided to do something he rare did and speak the truth, "It's Mr. Mordaunt, Sir. Cutty Mordaunt."

And he was doing that thing again...with his smile and his HAIR! Cutty found it almost too unbearable and what he wanted to shout was, 'Like Hell we are!', but he thought better of it in front of a professor. And it seemed that Toby's personality wouldn't suit any manner of lie Cutty could construct about trying to cut the queue. The Hufflepuff boy was ever-likely to allow him to go first so any act of aggression before figures of authority was probably unnecessary and ineffective. Besides, wasn't Tobias dead useful enough to have warranted staying on his good side...Did Tobias have a bad side?

That was when he realized that what he knew, I mean actually KNEW, of the boy he could fit into a thimble and it bothered him severely. But now seemed a perfectly reasonable time to rectify that.

"Yeah! That's right, Professor. We're friends. I don't mind going in with Tobias, so long as he goes first. He was afterall, here before I was." What was he going to speak to the Professor about? If nothing else, the class itself which was the reason why Cutty was there anyway. No information is EVER bad information. Ever.
Aww, wasn't that just heartfelt friendship between the two? The Slytherin one had a weird way of showing his enthusiasm, though. The contractions in his face needed working. Botros pondered whether or not he might be faking anything, but he didn't have any reason to accuse the little boy. "Mordaunt." He repeated after the boy with a nod, his wand touched the door knob and the door swung open.

"That's brilliant then. You two can come in. I was about to get myself some warm tea." Yes, it wasn't cold outside, he knew. Botros moved inside the office, expecting the boys to follow him, and let his cane rest with the other canes in their basket. There was a small stand next to his chair and behind the big table with boxes of different tea types and a kettle. He went around the desk, seated himself in his chair and started working on his tea, "Take a seat, please." In case they haven't yet. "How was your summer? Adventurous and full of energy, I hope?" He could say it was for Toby, not sure about the other new kid though.

Well, Toby was totally find with that. He afforded Cutty a smile, a silent thanks for letting him go first, as though he didn't realise that by being effectively 'first in line' meant he sort of had the 'right' to go first anyway.

Once Professor Botros had entered the room, Tobias quickly followed, smiling at the warm familiarity of the room. It still reminded him of his time at the school before Hogwarts, and any kind of familiarity was comforting to Toby.

Without realising he was doing it, the Hufflepuff looked around at the door once Cutty was inside, hoping to see if his letter from last year was there. He'd looked too soon, however, as the door was still open, so instead busied himself with approaching the desk and seating himself in one of the chairs that always made him feel like some sort of prince.

"Oh," Toby soon found himself replying. "My summer was okay, sure. I made sure to have some adventures," he added with a grin. The thirteen year old was tapping his feet as he spoke, and the fingers on one hand were drumming rapidly against his knee, whilst he sort of reached up and fiddled absentmindedly with a lock of his brown hair with the other hand. "There's lots of woods and huge hills by where I live and my grandmother let me go explore them."

He paused for a moment, watching Professor Botros prepare his tea, and looking slightly thoughtful as he spoke again, almost as an afterthought. "I'm glad to be back, though. I had to leave here before last term officially ended, you see. Family stuff. So I've missed it here a whole lot. Especially all the people." He meant people like Botros and all the professors and his friends which included Cutty, so he grinned at them both to show this. Of course... no more Forrest here. That made his grin falter a bit. Ahem. "What about you, professor? Did you do anything awesome over the holidays?"

All the time he spoke, Toby's positive attitude and general happiness shone through. It may have been hard for anyone to believe that he could ever be unhappy about anything at all. Tobias certainly hoped that was the impression he gave, even if he didn't fully realise it.

Cutty, being the last one in, bothered to shut the door behind him. He remained standing by the door whilst it was open and noticed Tobias look his way. The reaction that caused was nothing short of panic. Was the Hufflepuff boy looking right through him? He held his breath, but didn't realize he was doing so until Toby turned his attention toward Botros addressing his summer. With Tempus's back now facing him, Cutty felt safe drawing closer and taking a seat himself after shutting the door. He then proceeded to try and look as friendly and as sweet as he thought might impress Botros, but in reality he really sort of resembled a wind-blown capuchin wearing a black tent next to the pretty Tempus boy.

"Yeah. Mine was okay too." The boy gave a short answer to the octogenarian's question, not wanting to say very much in Tobias's presence.

Poor, sweet, innocent Tobias. He had no idea of the wrong things floating about in Cutty's mind as he studied the older boy in attempt to overcome the strange power he had over him and Tempus seemed nervous. Taping his fingers and playing with his...

HAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIR!

Cutty's eyes widened as he caught the honeyed colour of it in the light of Botros's office and all expression save the widened eyes washed from the mercurial boys face. He looked away slowly until his eyes fell upon a series of neatly folded silky napkins that menfolk like to wear. Utopian Puffs. Yes. That was what Tobias was. A Utopian Puff. Cutty felt himself grow strikingly calm, despite all that had transpired. He felt sedated as he sat and took in the information.
~Toby was nervous
~And, apparently a wildman, who lived in the forest
~Also, he had to leave sometime during the school year last term due to family issues.
This last thing Cutty found a thing moste curious.

Botros used his wand to make the tea brew faster, then poured three cups for himself and for the little boys. The china cups floated towards them and followed by the sugar container. Botros held his own and turned to face them both with a relaxed smile, "Sugar?" He clarified in case they didn't know what that small pot was for. Mr. Tempus was too busy chatting like he always did, and Ab liked this about kids in general so long they weren't shouting or being disrespectful. "Aaah. A Hufflepuff who enjoys exploring, finding things even. Not a surprise." Siiiiiip from the delicious tea. MMmmm.

Oh? The old professor's eyebrows knotted a little at that news. Tempus left shortly before last term was over? It took a long moment for the man to try and remember whether the Hufflepuff was present during the competition or the stands. Even their last Runes lesson. Hmmm. Nope, he decided that he actually hadn't seen Tempus at the end of the term, seeing such energetic boy left a mark in the old man's memory, it wouldn't go unnoticed or forgotten easily. "I hope everything is going well with you now?" He didn't wish to push the boy, specially with the awfully quiet Mr. Mordaunt over there.

... speaking of. Botros took another sip and directed his gaze at the Slytherin boy, "Just okay? Mr. Tempus here shared his summer adventures. I will share mine. I went to Alexandria, that's in Egypt, to see my family. My grandchildren insisted on keeping Feo for the year." Botros glanced meaningfully at Tempus right then, notice how it was so quiet in here? Hmm? That was why.

Now was Mr. Mordaunt's turn to share some more.

Siiiiiiip.

Tea, ooh yeah. Tobias never really drank tea out of choice, but he usually always accept it when he went to visit his professors. Unless it was chamomile. Bleh.

"Thank you, Professor," the boy grinned as he took the china cup, and proceeded to put a few sugars into it. He wanted more, ideally, but he was learning to ignore his sweet tooth. He was still into working out and running every single day, so piling in the sugar whenever he had a cup of tea seemed a bit detrimental to that. Tobias took a small sip before deciding the tea was a just a smidge too hot, and set it down to cool off some. "Oh for sure, sir. I love exploring. Finding new things is like a magic in its own right, I reckon."

Woah, slow down there Tobes. You're in danger of sounding philosophical.

At the question, Tobias shrugged one shoulder and looked over at his tea again. He traced the rim of the china cup with one index finger from the hand that had been playing with his head, whilst his other hand and his feet continued to drum and tap, though almost silently.

"I'm okay," he responded, glancing up to Botros and then back to his tea again, where he was now tracing the handle of the teacup. Toby didn't feel any urges to hold back on this topic at all, not when speaking to Botros. He also never suspected for a second that Cutty might be listening out specifically for details about HIM. If anything, Tobias believed the younger boy would soon forget the things Toby spoke about. "It's just that I live with my grandparents, see? And my grandfather got ill and, well..." Tobias took up the tea for another sip before setting it down again. He thought about finishing the sentence, but changed his mind. Sharing information about things that were sad was still something he was trying to work with. The only person he'd outright told was Forrest, and suddenly saying it out loud again felt a bit overwhelming, so Tobias flashed a smile at the Professor and simply said, "This is good tea, sir."

And promptly started thinking happy thoughts.

Ooooh. Summers. Botros sounded like he had had a good one. Tobias had never been to Egypt. Never been abroad at all, actually, so somewhere like Egypt really DID seem magical. At the mention of Feo, the third year blinked and looked around the room. Well well well. Now the professor had mentioned the lack of crup this year, Toby suddenly realised the poignant absense. N'awww. He'd miss that crazy little canine. The first time he'd properly spoken to Professor Botros was because of Feo.

The Hufflepuff gave a smile (because Feo was adorable okay and it didn't take much to make Toby smile) and looked over at Cutty to hear about his summer too, unwittingly mirroring Botros as he sipped his tea again.

Still in his euphoric daze, Cutty plucked the teacup from the air as though it were a low-hanging pear. Sugar? Why yes! The wee Slytherin partook of that as well in a portion probably too generous for the amount of tea he had in his cup. He drank, nonetheless, and even seemed to enjoy it. This professor, Botros, was paying him mind and Cutty did not seem too bothered by it. All he felt was a hair-induced elation, though it was slowly starting to dissipate in light of the curiousity caused over the Professors comments.

The wee Slyth considered Botros's remark about his family living in Egypt. He couldn't have meant his own parents, could he? No. They wouldn't have been alive still. Well, maybe he meant his grandchildren? Did his son or daughter marry into an Egyptian family, perhaps? Was the Professor himself Egyptian? It was somewhat hard to tell after people reached a certain age for Cutty.

Tobias was talking. And saying things that were horribly, terribly, pestilentially intriguing to Cutty. And then he stopped talking quite suddenly and Cutty looked incredulous for a moment before assessing what that meant. Interesting. So Tempus had some secrets to keep. It was about time that Cutty check out that Lonely Potioneers Diary book Mr. Kitridge had been going on about anyway.

The younger boy sat there, sipping his tea unaware of social pressure (or perhaps simply unbothered by it enough) to respond to the expectant sipping and stares of the Professor and the Puff-Puff, the latter projecting his mind into a whirlwind of plans and ideas. So inspiring! Finally, noticing the silence, the boy turned to the two of them and was all like, "Wot?" as if he were missing something. Cutty didn't get it.

The sugar container was back in front of Botros after the boys took their need from it. He couldn't help but keep closer attention on Tempus, was all this energy from sugar intake? Would the Healer know if he overused some? He didn't want to get in trouble with the Snake woman. She made him uncomfortable with her stares.

Anyway. Boy was talking, his grandfather being ill. This started to sound a little more solemn than the old man had expected, Botros politely put the cup of tea down. "Is he alright now? Old people do get ill." He offered the Hufflepuff a small encouraging smile, glancing towards the snake in an attempt to make him encourage his friend as well. Hello? Little kid? Nope, he was lost to the tea in his hands. Speaking of which, "Ah yes. This is Iraqi tea." Middle Eastern tea was his favorite, obviously. Last time he brought Moroccan. "Mixed with some Egyptian herbs. A friend of mine in Alexandria mixes them himself, fresh and raw." Grinning and somewhat proud of his tea, Ab took a sip.

*silence*

... yep, the Slytherin was completely lost to the tea. The professor laughed at the boy's clueless look. "We were looking forward for you to share some more summer memories with us." He didn't have to, though. But... this was the traditional Toby-Botros summer gossip summary. So. Cutty's existence here required some summer talk. Botros waited yet again.

So, apparently Cutty wasn't going to share. But that was okay too. Toby gave him a friendly grin even despite the pretty short response. Probably he was just shy, and Toby knew a lot of shy people.

Botros was talking again, causing Tobias to whip his head around once more to look at him. There were so many ways he could answer that question. Toby absolutely did not want to be the person who made a conversation anything other than happy. He inwardly berated himself for even bringing it up, and searched wildly for the right way to answer, fingers still tap-tap-tapping away, this time at the side of his teacup. Maybe it would have been easier to talk about just one to one with the Professor, but too late now.

"Not really, sir..." Toby ended up saying, looking like he was weighing and picking his words carefully. He didn't want to bring the mood down by talking in depth about it, but he didn't want to be dismissive and disrespect his grandfather's memory. "It's just me and my grandmother now."

Toby smiled again. Not one of his full grins, but not a forced smile either. He'd known the man for 13 and a half years, and that was enough to give him a lot of amazing memories. Sure, Toby missed his grandfather, but it was for selfish reasons. Hadn't he lived a long, fulfilling life? That was what mattered. In Toby's opinion anyway.

"My summer was good, though. And happy," he quickly pointed out. He didn't want anyone to think he'd wallowed in sadness all summer, but also didn't want them to think he just wasn't bothered about it all. Tobias thought about trying to explain further, but decided against it. Surely it would be no stretch of the imagination to see that Toby could still be happy during difficult times.

Anyway, yes. TEA. Good tea. Much good. The Hufflepuff drank some more of his good tea, which had now cooled down enough that he could properly appreciate the taste, without it being too cool. Tobias nodded as Botros explained the taste, and sipped some more. And then smiled, because when did he ever not? "It really is awesome. Kudos to your friend, sir!"

But for now, he set the tea down again, because his hands needed to fidget. Maybe he should start carrying something around to occupy his hands.

As Botros addressed Cutty, Tobias remembered the letter, and took the opportunity to check for it again, now that the door was properly closed and he'd be able to see it. The Hufflepuff twisted around in his chair and- yep! There it was! Right where they'd put it last year.

Toby turned back to face the others again, full beaming grin on his face. He may have even bounced a tiny bit, but quickly channeled that happy energy back into his hand- and foot-tapping, and waited, once again, to hear about Cutty's summer.

... yep, the Slytherin was completely lost to the tea. The professor laughed at the boy's clueless look. "We were looking forward for you to share some more summer memories with us." He didn't have to, though. But... this was the traditional Toby-Botros summer gossip summary. So. Cutty's existence here required some summer talk. Botros waited yet again.

Cutty smiled and it was actually sincere because he had learned something just now. This professor it seemed wanted social interaction, and not just in the way of displays of proper student etiquette towards his/her elders, but actual details about their lives. This would be tricky, but if he could pull it off it could perhaps win him some favour. This was about when it dawned on him. Was this something that Toby and the Professor did after each summer break? Were they were in the middle of a tradition just now. Possibly one that spanned since Tobias's first year. And was he a new initiate, being asked to uphold the rites. Of course. How could he resist.

With that in mind he paid more attention to visual cues.

The sweet, perfect, and friendly smile flashed to Cutty earlier was quickly forgotten by the secundo as Toby finished his thoughts on his grand-dad.

Merlin. Toby had lost his grandfather.

Merlin. Toby was HAPPY about it.

Hard. Core.

Even if Toby did seem vaguely uncomfortable and a bit nervous...STILL! Oh, man! Toby's grand-dad must've been a real piece of work if Tempus was happy about it. In an effort to maintain the ritual, Cutty reached a hand out and patted Tobias on the back, but it wasn't like, 'There, there...', it was more like, 'Good job!'. For Toby had survived and he wasn't even sorry. He really liked Tobias. He really liked Tobias Tempus.

The boy took another sip of his tea. "I thought this tasted a bit familiar, Professor. Does he own his own shop, your friend? Tita gets all of her tea from a shop in Alexandria, because she says it is the best and worth the trip. I went to visit her this summer in Cairo. And I stay there for a couple of weeks and then I go and visit m'dad in Victoria. That's in British Colum...Tempus, what in hell were you lookin' at?" And out went Cutty's fake-politeness straight out the window as he caught the Hufflepuff boy not paying him any enough attention. He kept looking towards the door. So it wasn't him, Tempus had been looking at before then? I feel reasonable certain that Cutty was plotting here. Now. At this point.

Botros should've guessed this could be the reason why the Hufflepuff boy would leave school for. Not any regular illness, Botros should've known. The old professor, being practiced in those issues, nodded his head solemnly. "I'm sorry to hear that you've lost someone dear to you." He didn't want to push for details, Tobias looked oddly mature (with his bubbly energy radiating off him) as he gathered his strength and put a smile on. Botros wanted to hug him right here and there, squish him with love, ask him about his best memory of his grandfather. But he didn't do any of that, the boy was obviously trying to be brave here, and he was going to help him. The other boy's pats were sweet. The professor approved of the Slytherin boy though there was this... shifty feeling in his old guts about the unusual quietness of him. It didn't seem like Mordaunt was shy, really. Lions and Snakes were rarely quiet for the good reasons. Though Botros, a badger, was no one to judge or quickly assume about kids. "If you ever need to tell someone... something about him, I'm always here. Interested and yearning to hear."

Aha! The Slytherin boy finally talked, Tobias glancing to the door didn't go unnoticed but Botros didn't think much of it. "Your Tita? That's grandmother in Arabic slang." Was the kid aware of this? Or was it a nickname? Oh wait, Cairo? Hah! The professor leaned forwards on his elbows, "You have family in Egypt? Are you Egyptian, my boy?" He didn't notice any odd accents from the boy, but that was never a rule. Botros was half-Egyptian and he had a flawless misleading British accent himself. "But no, my friend does that for a hobby. When you're old and retired, you do those sort of things for the sake of feeling productive, useful." If Debby was alive, Botros would've retired himself, but being the case she was not, he didn't want to stay home every day reminded by her for every moment. He was a brave mourner, like little Tobias here, and he meant to keep it this way.

Okay, touching intimate moment gone with Mordaunt's... snapping? The professor hid his amused grin behind the cup as he took a sip. "I believe, Mr. Morden," The name sounded wrong, oh well. "That Mr. Tempus is looking at my souvnirs from Hogwarts. Hung up on the door." He motioned for Toby that he could walk up to the door and watch closely.

Aw, see?

See that?

Cutty was awesome, patting him on the back and stuff. Tobias sent over a grateful smile to his friend and a nod of thanks before looking back to Botros again.

"Thanks Professor. I reckon you'd probably be the one I'd come to in any case." Tobias wasn't able to say why. Maybe because the man was a lot older and wiser than many, if not all, of the people this Hufflepuff knew. Or he just gave off those VIBES. Maybe, subconsciously, because the man was a Hufflepuff himself (as Toby remembered from the post-summer visit in his second year). Point was, Botros was a bro.

Now, see... Tobias totally HAD been paying attention. Absolutely. Completely. Could probably repeat every part of the conversation that had gone on in front of him (for his best listening was done when he was fidgeting). But the boy was totally incapable of sitting still, and impulsive, and he figured that that might have been the reason for Cutty calling him out. After all, he probably LOOKED like he was disinterested.

The third year started slightly and immediately felt GUILT. Because he must have seemed rude and everything and sdfhsdhdksd. But Botros helped him out, at which point he gave a relieved grin. At least that was one person who understood.

"Yeah, those souvenirs, there," Toby nodded, and pointed over the the things on the back of the door to the office. "I was just checking to see if something was still up there. I... sorry." Apologetic smiles for Cutty because he did feel bad.

At the nod from Botros, Tobias got up and went to the door so he could point out the letter written in Elder Futhark with more precision. "This here. I wrote it for Professor Botros last year." The drawing that was also on the door wasn't from him; drawing was the sort of thing that required people to be able to sit still for long periods of time. No, his was just the letter.

And he beamed over at the Runes professor and at Cutty again, before starting back towards his seat again. He was thankful for the opportunity to get up and move his legs around, but Toby had left his cup of tea by his chair, and kind of wanted some more.

Cutty nodded as the Professor mentioned the meaning of the word for Grandmother, because yes, he did have family in Egypt. Quickly, his perspective on Botros changed from a neutral analyzing one to delighted surprise. But he closed his large eyes and took a sip to conceal his joy behind a calm, focused veneer wishing not to look foolish before the older boy. "Ya3ni waldety masreyya." He began, explaining that his mother was Egyptian. He was unsure if that made him Egyptian, however. To some it was decidedly 'No.', but it did not destroy the fact that sometimes he felt more connected to the Nile than the Mersey or that a wedding could be detected by sound alone. "I like useful. Useful is the best."

"What about you, Professor? Enty masreyya? Are you Egyptian?" He thought this time to translate as he spoke for Tobias's benefit.

Cutty's hidden joy became harder to conceal with Tobias's face contorted graciously in that apologetic manner. "It's alright, Tempus. We're still friends." It was, Cutty thought, a better reaction than he could've hoped to get if he had been fishing for one on purpose. Tobias did care...at least, to some extent (even if Cutty didn't grasp why). And he could be controlled...again, to some extent. In a twisted manner, it gave him a sense of relief to know that there was some magic button he could push that would pull in the reigns and make him feel safe again. Dodge the strange feeling the boy often got from simply being around the third year. Cutty pulled the teacup away from his mouth but still working to conceal his satisfaction. He watched as Tobias moved over to the souvenirs, point one out and then came back again.

"You wrote that, Tempus?" Then he looked from Tempus over to the Professor. "Did he teach you how?" Cutty was getting excited, because maybe Runes would more or less be like learning another language. Perhaps he had been lying to the French girl when he said he had wanted to get into linguistics, but the boy did think there was something to be said of the joys of learning a new language. It opened so many opportunities.

What a horrid little boy.

What a horrid little boy.

Abraham smiled warmly at Tobias, somewhat relieved that the boy considered him when he needed someone to talk to. "I'll be here." Again, emphasizing wouldn't hurt.

Botros' eyebrows were raised as the Slytherin boy talked in Arabic. "Aah. Also an Egyptian mother." The boy might as well be Botros version in this new generation. Not personality-wise since the professor knew so little, but background-wise. "My father is English, but he married an Egyptian. I lived in Egypt after Hogwarts." He smiled over at Mordaunt, Ab didn't marry an Egyptian though. "We used to live in Alexandria. There is a Botros manor there overlooking the Nile." It was concealed from the muggles, of course, so he wasn't sure if Mordaunt would've heard of it (if he was a muggleborn).

Back to the letter, Botros had a proud wide smile on his face. "Why yes, of course I taught him how." He laughed and sent the teakettle floating to the boys again in case they wanted more tea, followed by the sugar. "Mr. Tempus is one of my brilliant young students. He showed great potentials in runic writing." Obviously. "I don't think I've seen you in any of my classes, Mr. Mordaunt." He looked from the Slytherin to the Hufflepuff, they were friends and seemingly so close in age so... somehow it was Tempus' responsibility that his friends attended Runes along with him.

Words.

Cutty was definitely saying words.

That was about as much as Tobias got out of that little interaction. They were words he didn't have a hope of understanding, so he didn't interrupt or anything. Gosh, how cool it must be to speak a different language. Gosh.

Gosh.

They were talking about othercountrystuff, too, which was pretty interesting. Interesting enough, at least, to hold Toby's attention. Though he did accept the non-verbal offer of tea and filled up his cup again (with a little sugar too, of course).

Hearing Botros' compliment (because that was totally what it was) made Tobias look up again, slightly surprised. Brilliant? Well, that could have been a collective descriptor for ALL of his students. But the bit about potential was enough that Toby ended up with a big stupid grin on his face. He took a sip of the tea and set down the tea cup again so he could speak and gesticulate or at least fidget at the same time if need be.

"Yup! We learnt how to do some runic writing in my first year," he said, shuffling around in his chair a little so he was facing Cutty even better. "And I really enjoyed it, so..." Sooooo, the letter happened. Simple.

YeaaaaAAAHHHHH, CUTTY. Why haven't y- wait.

Was... was Botros looking at TOBY?

The Hufflepuff blinked rapidly in slight confusion, but decided to just go with it. Acted like Botros was looking at him for back-up rather than anything else. So Toby grinned and looked to his friend.

"Yeah, Cutty. Where you been, mate?" Mischievous grin but also a friendly one because he was kidding.

But also not.

'Cause Ancient Runes.

"Does he now?" Cutty's smile was lookin' quite the mischievous one as he looked from Botros back over to Tobias. When the tea kettle floated around offering seconds he politely refused with his dirty little hand, looking almost haughty upon the return of his clear sense and Carthage philosophy. "I'd believe it. Tobias is ...needlessly humble." For one so powerful. And there were times that this ill-perception of Toby had adverse affects on the smaller boy on and off again. But this, this whole office thing had been a fortunate gift of learning. And Cutty hoped there would be still yet more to come from it, even if later. He had believed it to be one of those classes where the majority of it would consist of decoding and interpretation. Interesting, but not fun. However now that this no longer seemed the case, the prospect held greater promise than originally conceived.

"That's what I'm doin' here, Professor. M'moom says it's alright if I start talking about taking elective classes." Because Cutty's mother was no fool. She knew her son well enough to apply his ambition and idle-hands. If she just let him take the classes outright the boy would have no appreciation for them and his grades would suffer. So she left his the space to think that it was all his idea. She lost a battle to win a war and she made Cutty WANT them and not only that, but want to be GOOD at them by telling him one simple word: La.

Or in English: No.

She was in his head. And now he was in Botros's office, pretending to not be too interested at first and thinking that he could get the old man to practically beg to have him for his student, but Cutty was constantly altering the plan. And now that he had let lose his eagerness for it, he had to confess. "I think I want to take Ancient Runes." He said with a faked calm little smile. He wished to appear mature and intelligent.

There it was again, that horrible, horrible feeling of lightness. The Slytherin closed his eyes tight for a brief second as if to fight off dizziness. Willing it away with his imagined supernova energy burst. But the result was actually this...

"I'M TAKING ANCIENT RUNES!" He shouted upon standing from his seat being unable to do anything else with his energy and sounding MUCH more determined than he meant to. He bottoms-upped the last of what was in the cuppa, placed the now empty teacup down and left the office. He had left the door open just a tiny crack on his way out and in a moment, his small hand could be seen coming back to shut the door properly with a surprising amount of care for what had just transpired.

He had left. Having gotten what he wanted (sorta), but without even thanking the Professor for the tea or his time. Cutty was a rude little boy.

Oh, wow.

She almost dropped her Ancient Runes textbook as her eyes took the state of Professor Botros' office. Airey would have a field day in here. Organizing, that is. BUT IT WAS ALL RUNES, and she smiled, widely.

Even more so at the Professor's voice. She liked it, a lot, his voice. It was somewhat soothing. "Hello, Professor," she said, "Miss Wisteria here," juuuust a remiiiinder. She was stepping inside rather carefully and trying very hard not to: 1. Trip over anything, 2. Trip something over anything, 3. Step on any parchment (because, Merlin, they seemed to be beyond ancient!) and 4. ...there was no 4, didn't the Professor used to have a crup????

Her eyes were on him now, though, "I could come back later if you're too busy, though," her problems could wait, unless this de-coding took forever...

[indent]Botros listened to Cutty talking about his heritage and he nodded smiling, and then nodding at Tempus approving of this friend very much. More nodding. And when they got to the point that Mordaunt wanted to attend Ancient Runes, the professor lit up and understood the meaning behind this visit. What a lovely gesture of Tempus to bring his friend to meet the professor and ask for guidance, indeed what a lovely--

blink

Then the Slytherin shouted and stomped off. Leaving the door ajar. Botros hand, holding the teacup, froze in midway to his mouth. Blink blink blink. He looked at Tempus, confused. "Uh." Uhhh. "Maybe.. you should follow your... friend...?" See what was wrong with him? The old man over here was utterly confused trying to decipher this generation's display of emotions.

Miss Wisteria. He was grateful she offered her name instead of betting on him to remember. Botros had parchments in both hands and he was stranded in the middle of the office, surrounded by his paperwork. "Hello Miss Wisteria. No, it's okay. This is a long term project. The Cairo Rune study division asked for some counseling. There's a free corner over there." He pointed at the corner by the basket that held his canes, "I'll clean some of those up for you." So if she could just wait a bit. The old man started grunting with every squat he made to remove some parchments. He shouldn't have left his wand on his chair. Too many details to remember. "How may I help you today, dear?"

.................................. oh.

Tobias sat, stunned. What on earth...

...

Okay.

He blinked after Cutty, eyes still on the door, brow furrowed, one hand absent-mindedly scratching at his temple. He looked like the absolute picture of confusion.

Upon hearing Professor Botros' voice, Toby turned back to him, hesitated, and then nodded. So Botros didn't understand what the heck had just happened either, then? Good to know. Tobias finished the last of his tea and set the cup carefully down on the desk. "I think I will."

To be honest, Toby was pretty sure that Cutty would be long gone. It always seemed like Slytherins were the best at knowing the secret passages in this school, and Cutty was probably one of them. But he'd still go look. And in any case, he'd been in the office for a good while. It was time to leave.

"Thanks for your time, Professor," the Hufflepuff boy smiled gratefully, and doing the manners thing for both himself and Cutty without even consciously thinking it through. "And thanks for letting us have some of your tea. It was really good." He stepped out from his seat and took a step back towards the door, bouncing ever so slightly on his toes when he stopped. "I'll see you around, I expect?"

Still no sign of the crup, you know? Someone was probably taking it out for a walk while Professor Botros worked. Yes, that seemed legit. The only other option was that the crup was dead, and she wouldn't dare to ask that, soooo... the walking option was definitely a winner here.

Awwww. Botros, don't you have a wand? Merlin, the things one forgets when reaching a certain age. Ahem. "Oh, well, in that case, thank you for your time, Professor," she was entirely curious about what sort of counseling was Botros offering, but she was more important at the moment. Now, she stood by the corner, mainly because she was still unable to take a seat. Distressed Wisteria, you see? Cannot keep calm.

As soon as the man asked, she suddenly felt like she was questioned by her own grandfather and that didn't make things better, no matter how much she loved her grandpa. "I'm having difficulties with the theory...,"' she gestured to her Ancient Runes textbook, "...I'm quizzing myself and, while I'm aware I know the answer, it's not the right one." Distressed tone. "And I don't understand why it's happening, I even helped a friend for OWLs last term---," and he knew more than her. Huh. Interesting. She hadn't noticed this, that's why her speech ended oh-so-suddenly.

Runes theory? She helped an older student before? Oh wow. "That's impressive. Who is it?" So he could see if her 'help' did that student any help or not, taking said student's result in consideration. If yes, she would make the runes-mentors list when a younger student needed help from less intimidating people. ANYWAY. Why did she stop talking so abruptly? Botros didn't get it. He simply lowered himself onto the chair, and widened his smile. "Yeeees? Are you having trouble focusing in general? Or is it a certain detail that's not clear to you?" He could help with both.

Another grin came from Toby before he turned and went to the door. The boy pulled it open again and stepped out.

As he he was pulling the door shut, Toby smiled and waved yet again at Botros, and chirped out one last "Bye!" what with being the overly friendly person that he was. Then the door closed gently, and there came fading footsteps as Tobias left the corridor to see if he could find his oddly behaving Slytherin friend.

Oh, well, look at that! Botros had found a place for her to sit. Excellent! Only now she had to pretend she wanted to take a seat, and really she didn't want to. Couldn't, even. But still managed to do so with a smile. The best smile she could muster for this wonderful man.

Impressive? It really wasn't as impressive. Not after realizing he'd retained far more information than she had. That he probably still knew and she suddenly forgot. Or not forgot, you see, because she knew deep down the answers to those questions could be correct. Only difference is she got them wrong. Maybe she just needed to stop studying for a while. Focusing in general, though... wellllll... it was rather amusing those were Botros' words, if Lex had been here she'd said that that was it, but she waited a second or two to give a full answer. An answer that, quite frankly, was 'I don't know'. Botros needed more than that, however.

Unaware of the fact that she was slowly caressing the book's cover, the Hogwartian regained control of her speech, and mind too, "Tag Kildare," not that the name mattered much, was Botros even capable of giving a face to a name without much information? "Only he didn't take his Ancient Runes OWL in the end...," and it wasn't until moments ago that she realized that fact bothered her a little. Runes Master and he chooses not to take the test. She just didn't understand that bit, still. The time wasn't wasted, though, since she was very fond of studying, but it'd be better if her mind would do her the favor of remembering the right answer. Her mind, because she wasn't here to discuss Tag. So, she cleared her throat and kept on talking, "It's not that the details aren't clear to me, I understand it all," it helped if you truly liked the subject, too, which she did, "The problem comes with a quiz or test." Yes, focusing in general, quizzes, tests, same thing.

His hands were folded on the desk in front of him, leaning slightly forward and looking at the Hufflepuff with great interest. Tag Kildare... Tag Kildare... Tag Kildare... "Yes! Of course! He had so much potentials." The boy climbed up that top student ladder last term, Botros was so proud of him. "You helped him with his studies?" He nodded with an impressed look. That explained why the boy was motivated all through the term, such cute friendship between the kids in school.

Botros scratched his bald scalp once again, then he scratched his chin. "You understand it all." Well, that was good. Was this some kind of code? Was it a girl code or a teenager code? He couldn't understand either. "Like what exactly?" Confused, he was. "Do you mean you're perfectly good when you're studying on your own but then when you're being tested you get confused?" Is that was she was saying? HE DIDN'T UNDERSTAND.

Oh? Well, the first exclamation was a clear proof that Botros remembered the name. That felt nice. This girl didn't particularly wanted to say more about him in order to make the Professor remember, you know? It made her feel uneasy somehow. But his next words. Potential. Yes, she was quite aware of that, and she tried to hide the smile on her face but it was a difficult task at the moment. Another one of those proud moments here. "I think he still does." She noticed the past tense in his sentence. Her eyes were unfocused on a piece of paper nearby, this was only a distraction from facing the man's eyes. "Knowledge-wise, I mean." A future involving Ancient Runes goes away with that OWL. Anyway, her eyes moved back to Botros and she gave him a nod, "I did." There was that bothersome feeling again.

"That's not why I'm here, though," Botros, you're getting sidetracked. Maybe she was the one getting sidetracked. See what we mean with the focusing??

More nodding came along and... was he getting confused as well? Was there something in the water?! Was this like the ice cream incident two terms ago?! No time to panic, though. Not yet. She had proof. And so she said nothing, her hands opened up the textbook and she took a piece of paper out of it (don't worry, she's not tearing any pages from it), then she placed it in front of Botros. Yup, you're looking at a test made by Lotus. "I did that yesterday, and you can see the answers aren't right." Yeah, you can see that Ansuz has nothing to do with Laguz, they don't belong in the same aett even! "That's never happened before. I mean, on previous terms." All the answers were wrong. And she knew they were wrong. "I only know they're wrong after I'm done with the test, not while I'm taking it." So, THIS was a problem.

But she had a question a very experienced mind could answer. He was the most experienced from all of Hogwarts. "Is it possible to overwork your mind to the point where it purposefully fails you?" She'd been studying since last term, after all.
