Professor Bentley is a very busy woman, but if you're lucky enough to secure an appointment with her one of the first things you will notice when you enter her office is the aroma. The air is filled with the sweet scent of peppermint tea and flowers. Oh no, you won’t find trowels, dragon dung or dirt in this room, everything is presented in a neat and orderly fashion. The office is decorated in earthy brown tones with hints of pink, green and yellow making the room feel very homey. In summer a light breeze will be drifting through an open window, whereas in the cooler months a fire will be roaring in the open grate fireplace. Behind Professor Bentley’s desk on wall by the window is a large cork board. On this board you will see a collection of photographs of family and friends as well as the occasional note about classes or homework. Photographs include her very dashing husband Aron Ashburry-Hawthorne and their son Derfael, as well as colleagues and former students. Also among these, is a photograph of her handsome, white pomeranian, Caltex. So feel free to come in and take a seat on one of the plush and comfy stools- mind of course you have permission to enter. Don't worry too much about the small bundle of fluff that flits in and out of the room, or lounges at your feet, Caltex doesn't bite. Just be sure your laces are tied, otherwise you might find you wont have any left by the time you leave.
And be careful as you enter... the potted Fanged Geraniums by the door like to play occasionally.

It had been three years after all. In her hands the held a potted plant. To the untrained eye it would look like a common red rose but it wasn't. It was her most loved plant. Her Love Bud.

Jezz cringed a bit at the thought of having to pay to see her lovely plants but she would just have to suck it up. Her guardian would help her pay for it. "I understand. I was just curious about it." She just hoped one day they would go away. Preferably before she graduated.
The young lion stared at the picture and smiled. "He's so adorable. Congratulations." She passed the picture back. At least something good had happened while she was away. "Such a unique name." One she certainly had never heard before.

She fell silent and the tears had managed to slip down her face unnoticed. "I'm just glad to be back. I'm hoping to tryout for the Quidditch team if my studies don't prove to be too difficult and maybe join the Herbology Task Force once again. Like I said, I'm just glad to be back.
" She wanted to get active as possible in the school again.

"He is, thank you," Seren replied, beaming with pride. "It's Welsh meaning Oak Prince," she clarified. It seemed appropriate at the time, he was her little Prince. Prince Derf...
Taking the photo back, Seren went about fixing it to her board again while Jezzabelle discussed her circumstances in returning to Hogwarts. Merlin it sounded sad. She didn't really know what to say... family trauma wasn't in her expertise, yet... and hopefully never. "Well I think it's fantastic that you're back, your aunt is a very kind lady. I'm sure you'll adjust quickly enough, and I'm always here if you need anything." Speaking of the Task Force, Seren peered at her growing pile of owls... she really ought to sort through those, soon.
As Herbology was one of the subjects Tobias had surprised himself at being pretty good at last term, he decided to start right HERE. He had booked an appointment with Professor Bentley, as required, and now found himself at her office. He'd never been specifically HERE before so it took him a while. BUT he totally made it. On time, too.
Once he reached the door, Tobias knocked cheerfully on the wood and waited to be granted entry.

Something like that. And the colours TOO. It was just so... COMFORTABLE in here. Toby couldn't help but think of all the other offices he'd seen at school, and how they were all so different.
Once he'd side-stepped the bitey plant by the door, Tobias looked at Professor Bentley again. The main thing he noticed was that she had significantly less belly. Which meant... baby? She HAD been pregnant, right? Not just full of ice cream. Best not to mention it just in case.

Despite the busy nature of the start of term, it had been quite promising and jovial, and Toby's presence just made it all the more pleasant and promising. "Definitely glad to be back, the time off was nice... but it's good to keep busy, and to see everyone again." She had her own little family now, but Hogwarts was her second family, her home away from home. "So what can I do for you today?"

With all the pain that it took to make an appoinment, Sarah knew how to full it well.

He grinned, GLAD that SHE was glad. Because he liked people to be happy. Good. GOOD GOOD GOOD.
Right. Yes. Reason for the appointment. "Well, Professor," Toby said, sitting up a little straighter. "I sort of realised last term that Herbology ended up being one of the classes I did best in, out of all the others. Totally by accident, but a happy accident, you know?" Because there was such a thing. "And what I'm trying to do is, with all the subjects I found that I was good at last year and that I found easy to manage, trying to work on these subjects and read up on them loads so I can grasp the theory at a higher level." Whilst trying to get up to scratch on the subjects he wasn't so good at, like Transfiguration. "Which will mean the practical stuff is easier to manage when I get to that bit. And then I'll be SUPER prepared for my OWLs, in fifth year." Did she see? He was being MATURE! "I was wondering... what you thought about that when it comes to Herbology, and what you think is a good idea to try and manage that?"
He paused for a second, apparently thinking of something, and then spoke again. "Like books to read? I've got... a lot of textbooks." Like all of them.
Tobias stopped talking then, because he realised he might have gotten a little overenthusiastic again. Heh.

Shoes off. Socks off. Dressed in casual jeans, singlet and cardigan, Seren lay back in her armchair, her feet propped up on her foot stool. It was a lazy day, and she was itching to do something, check the greenhouses, the gardens... sneak home for a bit... but she had an appointment, one that she was looking forward to.
She'd been expecting a knocking sound, so it took her a few moments to realise that what she'd actually heard was somebody call her name. Errr?
Eyeing the door, Seren wondered if Sarah was there, or whether she was imagining things. Either was possible. "Come in!" she called out, deciding she wasn't going to disturb her comfort for a fools errand. "Turn the handle and push!" she added, in case someone was there.

"Honestly, any additional reading you do for the subject will be beneficial to an extent, but real success comes from practice. Utilise the gardens and greenhouses and you'll be very successful in Herbology." She had hopes for this one, it wasn't every day you found natural skill like this. "Though I'm sure the library would have some records on previous test papers, you could get a feel for what the O.W.L's and N.E.W.T's are like," even with them being so far in the future.

Maybe she should knock.. Then she heard a response. Turn the handle and push... oh wait, professor already had the baby. Sarah ought to ask how he is doing. She turned the handle and pushed the door open. "Hi Professor" she said with her trade mark smile. "I am so glad you could see me.. having a good day?". Sarah hoped that her discussion would not make it worse. The room smelt nice.. wait.. is that her son. "Such a cutie" she remarked, "my sister-in-law, Jessica had girl after the summer, her eldest, a boy is already two." Jessica had carried unusually big, Sarah was sure there were twins in there. Sarah wondered why she needed to use a foot stool if she had a desk to put her feet on. Maybe she was suffering from Varicose veins already. Sarah's mother had them after giving birth eight times.
Was the teacher going to offer her a chair? Sarah felt that it was rude to sit down uninvited, it was stealing unless she was given permission.

Was it possible for Toby's grin to stretch any wider? He didn't know, but he felt himself grin even more. Someone, and a senior member of staff at that, telling him they admired him for hwat he was doing and his commitment or whatever? High praise indeed. "Thank you Professor!"
Right yes. Advice. Tobias listened eagerly, no danger of getting distracted now. When Professor Bentley mentioned the greenhouses, he glanced for a split second through the window and nodded his head. Gardens and greenhouses. NO PROBLEM. That actually sounded pretty fun as WELL as useful, y'know? Nodnodnod.
And THEN she suggested the past papers and stuff, and Toby's eyes widened, more in wonder than anything else. As though past OWL and NEWT papers were on the same level as wall to wall stacks of Fizzing Whizbees or something. "That's brilliant! I'd never considered that, before." So basically, reading was good, getting in some practice in the greenhouses and around the Herbology section of the school would, on top of that, be even more helpful, and the library might have some old exam papers so Toby could see what kind of theory stuff people had done on the past. "That's brilliant," he said again, still smiling. "That's super helpful, thank you so much!" So now in return he would do as he intended and try his super hardest in Herbology, since he seemed to take to it so well.

Her son was the most adorable baby in the world. Those big eyes, blond hair. He was a babe, a real babe. "Oh congratulations, that's wonderful." I seemed to be the season for babies.

Precious. Just precious. Seren beamed warmly, the Badger deserved the praise, and frankly he would be setting a fine example for his peers. A high standard indeed. "I'm sure Mr. Kitridge would be of great assistance in doing so," she couldn't fathom why the librarian wouldn't be, it was his job, was it not? "Alternatively some of the sixth and seventh years may be of some assistance also considering they'd have already sat their O.W.L's. A bit of peer tutoring may be on the cards." In fact, peer tutoring, why had she not thought to facilitate this sooner?
"But if you do need anything more specific, don't hesitate to ask... I'm always here to help."

"PERFECT! I often say that once ones heart is beating, their lungs breathing.. all else is extra!" she said. Well she only said that when she was in a good mood, when she was in a bad mood she was so busy telling herself that.. not that she got into bad moods often. Sarah sat down... it was so nice to have someone to talk to about babies... Sarah still coulld not understand why Alexa did not like them.
"well.. there is a lot on the agenda.. I think I will start with the worst one." she said. "I am sure you are well aware of Hadley.. I mean Professor Hadley teaching Muggle Studies instead of Arithmancy and a new professor was brought in to take her place. This new professor stunned all of us, he did not even know who founded each house and when! According to him you would be the head of the house founded by Jeremy Gryffindor in 1828, he did not even know that it was Salazar Slytherin that founded Slytherin. Also, head girl was originally attained... according to him... by the girl who could behead a house elf the most neatly..." SHUDDER. "Anyways, I would be okay with professors not knowing everything, especially not pertaining to the subject matter that he teaches, yet I also expect some humility, like an 'I don't know, I will check it up" thing. He was so sure of himself, that when I try to inform him of his mistake, he made it out as if I was wrong, and also told me to stop asking questions.. stop talking and just listen blindly to what he was saying. He even got parts of Arithmancy wrong, like saying it was first used by the Huns, contrary to what Professor Hadley told us." SIGH!
"He then told us that we needed to take a potion that gives us beards in order to continue. As according to him, males make better arithmancers then females as males have the ability grow beards. A completely outrageous statement. I was trying to lay low for the rest of the lesson so I complied.. anyways, I love dress up. Anyways, all of us that took the potion grew beards, and those that refused, had a beard forced on them anyway. The excercise had very little to do with arithmancy, other than it contained numbers. After all that, the professor left.. leaving us all with beards.. and impossible homework." She showed the head of house her homework diary "the numbers were called out during class and the students were not sure that they were meant to write them down. But I got them written down as I started to take minutes of the class... How is TWO THOUSAND MILLION BILLION GAZILLION written out in numbers anyway?" another sigh. Why was Hogwarts so stressful? Maybe it was because the Headmistress was not suited for the job.
Now onto the next. "I also find it hard that during OWL year, I have to pay to enter the library. My parents are not very well off, all my textbooks are hand me downs that were originally bought second hand. However I know that the way to success is through knowledge, yet how can I learn barely using the library? Should my parents take out further loans and give it to a school that due to recent events, one can barely trust with money. I still think Hogwarts ought to be audited." Just putting that out there.
Okay next.. "now that we have those gloomy topics put on the table.. I also would like career advice, if that is possible. Due to a dislike in Divinition, I dropped that subject and I am thinking of dropping Ancient Runes too. But asides for subjects, I don't know what my future holds.". Pause, a brief look out the window. "from what you know about me, my personality and marks.. which careers would you think are ideal for me?" Bently was one of Hogwarts few adults that Sarah would take advice seriously from.

SWEET. The Librarian would be some help. Of course, it made sense. Librarian's tend to work in libraries to help people AND deal with the books. Seren listened, patiently, nodding and trying her hardest to follow the girls train of thought. Arithmancy? Beards? Slytherin? Say what now? ... "Er... uuhhh... ermmm..." she had no idea what to say. None.
"Lots of zeros I'd imagine," she stated, reluctantly... though really, she didn't have a clue about that numbers stuff, but it sounded pretty daunting. "You know, perhaps if you're having trouble understanding you could... talk to Professor French?" she suggested, though considering the girls rant, perhaps not... "or I'm sure Professor Hadley would be happy to lend you a hand if you feel her teaching style best suits you and you ask really nicely.." see! options!
As for the library thing, that was a pain in the bottom. A big fat pain in the bottom. "I understand it may be difficult for you and other students to manage, but it's a necessary evil.." the school needed money, and it was either pay for library use, or pay to use the great hall.. and toilets and what not. "Perhaps you could work out a system with your peers. Limit the amount of trips you all make by using a rotational system and borrowing out books to share together. That... or you could hunt for loose change in the quidditch stands.. I heard it can be a gold mine at times."

Sarah felt vindicated, see, even her Head of House was speechless at the preposterous nature of the Arithmancy lesson. “Not Professor French, I can only speak to professor’s that respect, beside he was most unhelpful during the lesson. So self assuered.” Sarah said, “Perhaps I could go to Professor Hadley and that might solve the problem for me, but what about the others? Are they going to progress in Arithmancy with faulty basics? Really, if it was just me involved I would have figured it out myself, yet the FUTURE is at stake! Teaching is risky business, this professor can wreck havoc on his students!” That was why Sarah did not want to teach.. there was such responsibility.
“I already did that, I go there once a week at most” this was big coming from Sarah the booklover. “I guess I can speak to my friends..” Then her eyes lit up “that is a great idea, I think the investment of getting into the stands would be paid off by my finds.. But is that stealing? Like maybe someone will come back for their lose change?” Yes, Sarah would go back to find her change, even if it was a small amount, it all added up. It would be embarrassing to collect things and that, yet if such embarrassment was the price she had to pay for knowledge, she would do just that.

Other students... yes, well... Sarah had a point, and inundating Hadley with additional tutoring/assisting would not go down well. "Well, if you all feel so strongly about it, perhaps write a letter to the Board of Governors, or better yet, get your parents to." It was, after all.. their job to ensure the students were receiving the best education, or at least, appropriate education. Beards side...
Seren was amused by Sarah's moral compass, it wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but it was intriguing. "Finders keepers?" she offered. "Unless you're thinking of getting a job.. of which your options are very limited. Unless some of your more weal their peers are willing to pay you for carrying their books around or cleaning up their dorms, I say you should take any loose change that you can get."
The Gruffindor's last question-statement puzzled her the most. It seemed so random considering their conversations thus far. "Yes?" she pressed, "what about careers?"
Seren was not a mind reader, so at best she could only hazard a guess as to what Sarah meant by that. Was she considering her options already? Or just wanted a general conversation?
Toby's bright smile and enthusiasm only added to her good mood, making her want to bounce in her seat, or bake, or do cart wheels... all very good ideas.

"Brilliant!" Had he said that already? Probably. Tobias said a lot of things and constantly forgot what the little things were, thanks to his brain going a mile a minute, same as his body. Oops? "Awesome! Thank you so much, Professor Bentley! You've been a real help."
With a huge, genuine grin on his face, Toby rose from his seat and all but skipped to the door. "I'll see you soon, Professor," he added, turning to her and referring to things like lessons and how if he spent time in the greenhouses he likely would see the ladyperson just chilling with the plants. "Nice talking to you!"
With that, Toby opened the door himself and headed out and, after turning and giving the Herbology professor a cheery wave, he began to job his way up to the castle for some library timez.
