| | Muggle Studies Lesson Two (Building a campfire & S'mores Activity) The Muggle Studies classroom was re-arranged since last lesson. There are individual chairs and desks, which form a semi-circle around the perimeter of the room, connected by Professor Hadley's teacher desk. As for the large open space in the middle, it's void of nearly everything, including carpet. Despite the late Winter month, the window is open.
There's several large grocery paper bags sitting atop Professor Hadley's desk as well.
On the board behind Hadley (and her desk), is three rules in large print: Quote:

She glanced over at him, still smirking, and then looked back toward the front of the room, wishing class would hurry and be over soon.

This always interested, but she loved her muggle things so she felt like she was home for even the smallest time. Putting her hand up with the question, "Professor we.. I mean muggles use hand warmies. They are little packets that heat up to keep your hands and feet warm while outside." She had used them at sports events with her dad a few times. Quote:

Though muggles could not use the hot air charm. So they had to think of something. Fina nodded at the two prefects who suggested hand warmers. And body warmers. "Yes, Muggles have these little packets, I believe I have some..." she trailed off as she rummaged through the bag and selected two packets out. "They last for several hours, so if you're going to be playing a sport in the freezing cold, they're good for that so your fingers or toes don't freeze off. Only thing is that to activate, muggles need to use this electronic called a microwave. Which is a small oven used to heat things up. Here, feel free to pass them around and read the packaging." She passed it to Minerva first. Quote:

She supposed she could handle it for now.
What did Muggles do to keep warm? "Stay inside where it's warm and not open the windows," she answered, raising her hand. Those were pretty basic ways to stay warm, but still true. If it was cold outside and you wanted to be warm, then you stay where it's warm, which was usually inside. And don't let the cold air in. She eyed the open windows for a moment. "That would be pretty good advice, ordinarily," Fina smiled at the Gryffindor. "... but you'll find that I don't do things without reason. So the windows are open for a reason." And it wasn't due to hot flashes either. Quote:

Her hand went up and she wiggled her fingers, mainly because she'd had lots of sugar on her porridge that morning, but also because she wanted to say hi and she hadn't when she'd first came in. She was too busy choosing a seat. Heh. "Radiators!" Another of her favourite things.
And one of her names for horrible people. Quote:

He DID miss it sometimes. At least that made this class a bit easier...
He raised his hand. "Muggles have all these things in their house that make up a heating system. They have a furnace, and a water heating...thing, and heaters that circulate hot air through the house," he explained. That was about as technical as he could get. Lots of people suggested heaters! It seemed they were more common knowledge than other things. "Yes. Heaters, either portable or radiators or baseboard heating, are common ways that muggles use to keep their homes warm. Or, as Tobias mentioned, sometimes even having computers or televisions in the home radiates some heat, but often the heat that radiates from such technologies is not enough for heating up the home on a cold winter night, for instance." He was just very very lucky he had been forced to use a pay phone before.
When the window opened, he had one of those quick spazamy shiver things as the cold breeze first hit him. Meh, not so bad, just... colder than he was.
How did muggles keep warm? Kaiden's hand flew up. "The use fires, both in the house, and outside. Most people use matches to start them, but I..." He awkwardly stuck his hand in his pocket. "use one of these." He pulled out the fire starter that lived in his pocket at all times. Always be preparedness and all that. Plus, you never knew when one needed a fire on the grounds. "Its called a Fire Starter." "Yes, those are very handy for starting a fire, Kaiden," Hadley nodded. "Glad you brought that though, because we just might need it...." she smiled slightly. Quote:

Maybe she wasn't even looking for something only muggles use. Maybe she was looking for a common ground? "Firewood? A chimney is being put to good use as well when using firewood."
An, you Alec, got a smile. "Firewood. Yes, something else that's needed for a fire. Which will, yes, keep you warm or warm you up." Did they get that fire was a good thing? Quote:

She looked to the Professor who was saying something about her not getting her hopes up. Really? But the bags were RIGHT there. Unless she was using them to conceal illegal weapons (which Lex totally wanted to get a turn at holding) then it was safe to assume it was FOOD and her belly would be full by the end of this class and she would no longer regret showing up. Lex liked not regretting when she showed up.
As for the question? "Some of them have fireplaces in their homes but they're so weird because they don't have them registered for flooing and that kind of thing. It's kinda weird. When I visit my neighbour she finds it odd that I like creeping into her fireplace." Muggles were strange. Why wouldn't you test out a fireplace?
Sigh. One day there would be hope for them but apparently not any time soon from what she was seeing but EH, she wasn't a muggle and wasn't gonna live like one.
Now back to the food yes? "Oh yes, muggles don't use fireplaces as a mean of transportation, the way we do. They use it for .... fire!" How weird and unique was that?! A fireplace used a place for fire? Like, who'd have thought? "But you know what's weirder is that they used it for fire and warmth before we started using it for our floo networks." They started the fire! Quote:

Fire is used to keep one warm." She smiled at the 'visiting student' in acknowledgement mostly of his presence. Surely he had such a class back home that he was missing? Quote:

As for the question, the 11-year-old had no clue, so at first she just listened to the other answers. Minnie's one about hand warmies made her giggle. But the one about the radiators - Fern's eyes opened wide in horror at the very word. What were radiators!? They sounded evil!! She tried to school her terrified expression, though, because she didn't want her head of house or any of the cool teenagers to think she would let something like a radiator scare her.
Ooooh, but then that one boy actually had a real example! A weird example, to be honest, but it was an example all the same, and Fern felt a little jealous because here he was one-uping her in HER class. THE HUFFLEPUFF CLASS. Never mind that he was also a Hufflepuff, Fern was supposed to be the best in Muggle Studies, and therefore that was not okay. She glanced around, desperate to find her own example, but there was nothing to be found, and her hair got caught her mouth from all the whipping her head around looking -
Wait a minute.
That was it! Fern raised her hand excitedly, "Hair, professor! Muggles can keep themselves warm by having lots of hair! Like me!" She grabbed a chunk of her unruly brown hair, and gave it a little tug, to show Professor Hadley that she had a real example too, only it was attached to her head! "Yes. Hair does keep muggles warm. For those who have it, anyway!" Hadley beamed at the young badger and her unique suggestion... Quote:

At first he told himself to keep the comment inward. No need to bring that up and get the snickering from his fellow classmates...but another STRONGER side of him wanted to just say it.
So he did, "Snogging, Professor." Quote:

Couldn't they pleeeeease just shut the windows? They didn't need to experience the cold to talk about it.
Smirking at the Slytherin when Ascanius suggested snogging, Olly decided to soooort of take this a step further. She raised her hand. "Other people's body heat, professor?" Speaking of, was anyone in here willing to share that with her? It didn't look like they were closing the windows any time soon after all. Anyone? Where was Schuyler? Quote:

Hannah listened to the answers and decided to go with the first thing that came to her mind. "Perhaps they huddle together and hope for the best." How smart were muggles anyways? She really didn't care and only hoped that they would not being getting cold themselves. She didn't do well with cold weather. And these answers, Hadley was admittedly worried that she would get. She wasn't naive enough to believe that some of them - the older ones especially - didn't snog. Or hug. Or 'huddle together', as Hannah suggested, but she had hoped maybe that they wouldn't say so for the sake of the younger kids present. "Yes. Those are certainly ways muggles keep warm." Moving on now? Because there would be no sharing body heat with eleven year olds present, thank you. Quote:

Right now, though, it seemed as if they were talking about... keeping warm? Considering the fact that it was still really cold outside, this... was probably really perfect. As for the question, Alec's mind initially went to Elodie and Jake's answers. General Kaid's answer got a little nod. And then... someone mentioned hair and Alec grinned. HAIR! Of course! What an AWESOME answer!
... Erm... right. Question.
After a couple of minutes, the boy raised his hand in the air. "Some people can also use those..." What were they called? "... those hot water bottles? Sometimes they're used if you have a bad back but... it could keep you warm, too!" ... Should he mention something about blanket burritos too?
... He wanted a burrito. When was dinner time? "Yes, hot water bottles are often used to relieve muscular pains, but they can also be used as a source of heat. Good." And more child appropriate than the other suggestion. Quote:

As for ways that muggles kept warm, Ella agreed with everything that had already been said. She had some ideas of her own too though. "Blanket forts, Professor. Or better yet, eating soup inside of a cozy blanket fort. That'd do the trick."
Oh great. Now she wanted a blanket fort. "Oh yes. Blankets and forts! Very good and fun to make too!" Hadley nodded at those suggestions as well. She had that. And surely it wasn't THAT cold in here, was it? It was cold, but not like deathly cold. Besides, there was reason. Quote:

With the current topic of the lesson and her luck, though, it'd end up being fire and singeing her eyebrows off if she peeked.
And Alice was quite fond of her eyebrows. "I bet they use whatever's in the bag, professor." Could she shut the dumb windows already? Merlinnn. Well wasn't the Gryffindor Captain just being smart. "Yes ... they probably could use some of what's in the bag." Considering the bag held quite more than it appeared. Undetectable extension charms worked wonders. Pity muggles couldn't use THAT. Quote:

Brrrrrrrrr! It was chiiiillyyyyyyy.... She pulled her robes tighter around her and reached into her bag to pull out her sweater. Thank Merlin for Gram's charmwork in making her bag huge on the inside and feather light. She could carry everything with her without having to bother returning to the common room, no problem! Slipping out of her robes, so she only had her school uniform on underneath, she tugged on the white knit jumper and then put her robes back on top.
Her eyes moved to notice the bag. Before she could help herself she had raised her hand again. "Are extra gloves and mittens in the bags?" she asked, but wait, no gloves were in the other bag... so what was in the paper ones? Oh! oh, oh, oh! "Are we going to build SNOWMEN?" she asked excitedly. There could be snowmen supplies in those bags! "Lightbulbs DO get hot, yes, and radiate some heat, but like computers and televisions, it's often not enough to keep warm with." Hadley replied. "I have extra gloves and mittens here. In this basket, even, if you needed some?" But, as for the other question. "No, we're not building snowmen. Not today!" Quote:

Slowly Tessa raised her hand. "Exercise? You know, to get the blood pumping and in turn stay warm." That's how that works....I think. That was a good answer, right? Sure it was! I should get a cupcake for that answer. Tessa thought with a smile. She didn't know if it was an acceptable answer, but class participation was a good thing anyway, thus she would reward herself later with a cupcake. Hadley smiled at the tentative raising of the first year's hand. Ooh... another unique answer! "Yes. Exercise does get the blood flowing and in turn, keeps you warm." She glanced around at some of the students. "So if any of you are feeling too cold, please, feel free to move your legs back and forth to get the blood flowing... But of course, that was not the answer she was looking for. He wasn't stupid, he knew that. But he guessed maybe it WAS good info in case he got in a broom collision or something and his wand cracked. Then he got lost in the woods after said crash. Caleb would totally survive in the wilderness. He just knew he would. He could hunt birds and stuff and eat berries that he learned about in Herbology that wouldn't kill him...
OH RIGHT. HE WAS SUPPOSED TO ANSWER A QUESTION.
Snapping out of his daydream, he raised his hand. "Um, there's this thing called flint that makes fires. It's some kind of rock or something that makes sparks when you hit it against another rock, right?"

... HEY! Were they going to be building a campfire? Really? He leant forwards a little and glanced at the big space in the middle of the classroom. It... seemed like it was big enough for a campfire. Or several campfires. And if they were going to be making one, they'd be able to work in groups, yeah? Even if, thanks to his father, he knew a bit more about camping than he wished.
... Moving on...
Question. What was needed for a campfire? The answer seemed simple enough and so, Alec raised his hand in the air. "You need wood, Professor! Dry wood that can be lit easily." Because wet wood didn't work, as his Dad was good at mentioning numerous times on every single one of their camping trips.

Out of habit he looked at his girlfriend and was surprised to see that she was looking at him. Oh hey, Pen. Apparently that had caught her attention. He wondered why.
Maybe they could do a demonstration, Professor? Of muggle means of keep warm. Ahem. Quote:

Now ways to build a campfire. Tag sort of knew about this. He'd never gone out camping but watching the nature shows and stuff on the television back home he'd learned some basic pointer. Like that person said, you can rub two sticks together against a rock until a small smoke appears, you blow the spark gently and then a real fire begins to appear in the pile of wood. Or something like that I believe. Tag had never used that method. But it was something like that. " Or you can use a mirror and the sun. So that the sun beam shines on the mirror and then the wood." Was that right?
Again, Tag only had basic knowledge from tv shows.

An actual campfire? OH. Elodie was a whizz at this. She'd gone camping with her family every year since she was 7, and she EVEN knew campfire songs. She'd share those with 'fessor Hadley later, because she wasn't asking for that kind of stuff. Yet. "Someone with some common sense." You know..not to burn themselves or be an idiot around the fire. LIKE FIRST YEARS.

Campfires?
Like...campfires and s'mores? Was there s'more stuff in those bags? WAS THERE? The cold was doing funny things to Ella's brain and her tummy felt emptier than usual and so now she was cold and hungry.
As for ways to make a campfire, Ella raised her hand. "You need kindling to start, Professor. That's the small bits of wood that go up easily to get the fire burning hot so that it catches the bigger logs."

OH RIGHT. HE WAS SUPPOSED TO ANSWER A QUESTION.
Snapping out of his daydream, he raised his hand. "Um, there's this thing called flint that makes fires. It's some kind of rock or something that makes sparks when you hit it against another rock, right?" "Yes. You could use a flint, or as Kaiden so kindly has with him.... he has a firestarter with him." Which she was not going to ask WHY he carried that with him during school. Not in front of the class anyway, though later on the other hand. Quote:

Quote:

Wood, lighters, kindling, and common sense are all good things to use when building a campfire! Excellent!" Hadley beamed and then blinked in confusion at the Gryffindor boy. "Rubbing two sticks together to make fire can be effective, but not always. So a firestarter or flint or lighter are your best bets, once you've built your firepits." Hadley passed around some parchments with instructions on it that she had printed up. "This should help you." "Alright. So I've got a little competition for you." Cue mysterious smile and pause. Though they probably, maybe, knew what was coming next. "I think we've got enough space in here for four small teepee campfires. I say teepee, because it will be safer than just a regular campfire and more controlled." Yes, yes? Besides, Miss Phillips did just say she liked them. "The competition is between houses. Within your houses, you're each to build me the best campfire you can, given the space constraints. They'll need to be no larger than half a meter in diameter. You have the remainder of the class to build me the best campfire you can. I should have all the stones for the perimeter and firewood you need ... here in this bag." With that, she reached in and pulled out four equal amounts of firewood and stones for each house. "Good luck." ooc:
- Ideally you have 48 hours to complete this, but if I find you seem to need more time, I can add extra time, if needed.
- Work with your housemates. Foreign students? You can work with those houses that your sleeping arrangements are with.
- The more members of your house involved in the building / creating = the better. If one person does all the work, then less credit. SO go out there and get your housemates to come participate!
- Creative RPing and use of graphics for the final project = MAJOR PLUS. At least one member of your house is graphic capable.
- The windows are open for ventilation, so we don't die of smoke inhalation - Do NOT light your fires until Professor Hadley has approved your campfire design. When you've finished building the framework, request her to come look at your design. Use the title line in posts to grab our attention =)
- There will be house points rewarded, as well as another special surprise at the end.
- I think that covers everything, but if you have any further questions, please ask me (either IC or OOC via PM/IM/VM)

A campfire building competition? She could do this. Ella camped every summer with her Dad and brother so she had some experience. Plus she knew badgers didn't go down without a fight and her housemates seemed to know quite a bit about fire building as well. This was good, yeah?
Time to rally the Hufflepuffs. "Badgers? We can put our stone fire pit right here if you guys want." Nodnod. She'd even go get the stones not that she wouldn't need some help. Y'know, being Noodle-arms Bishop and all. They'd need wood too. Kaiden seemed to have the fire starter covered.

Ooh! Camp fires! So cooool! Adi raised his hand. "Well, we need wood for sure. But matches aren't needed as much.'' Because sticks or rocks could also do the trick!
...........
Awesome! Their own fire! Adi was excited. He bounded over to his House Captain. "I think that's a good place, Ella,'' he said with a nod. "I can help with getting the stones.'' |

Minerva had stayed quiet while people were talking about how to build a campfire, she had help build many since she loved to go camping. Her grandfather and her had done it and she use to go on the camping trips with Damon.. She frowned a bit at the thoughts, but focused on her class again.
Blink.. blink
They were going to build a fire in the castle. Didn't Hadley know about burning the school down or anything. Well they knew the water spell and if a fire did get out of control she wouldn't mind them using it even if it was muggle studies right? Either that or she better have fire extinguishers ready.
Turning she made her way over to Ella. "That sounds great. I'll help grab the stones." Min then headed over towards the stones. If Ella, Adi, and her got the stones maybe that could help the fire along while everyone else was getting out of their seats and getting ready.

Building a campfire, huh? Mischa could do that in no time. Camping was nothing new to him. But he would be working with the Ravenclaws. Eagles they were also called, correct? They would have known by now that he was staying with them. They really would have to be clueless to miss him.
So. Ravenclaws? Whenever you're all ready.

The Professor was saying things to her that she'd never have imagined. They had fireplaces before floo networks?? And they never once thought up the idea? Jeez, she loved muggles and all but they could be so dense and unimaginative sometimes. Alexa clung to every word the woman was saying until finally she was grinning. Building campfires. You know what you did with campfires?? You made up with one of your best friends while sitting around them ROASTED MARSHMALLOWS on them!!
She could so see this, no matter what Professor Hadley might have wanted to tell her. This meant cooperating even if they'd be muggling their way through this class. Manually building a campfire. Good merlin! Muggles needed to start learning magic so they could have it in their lessons. Quote:

Building a campfire. Nigel was fine with that. But he was not really in the mood for a competition and being a leader for the Ravenclaw group. Sigh.
Now to find the Ravenclaws who came to class. "Okay Claws. Who is ready to make a small teepee campfire?"
Nigel wasn't.. But would anyway because winning was fun.

Basically, this was a man's job. Not to be, y'know, a jerk. But c'mon. This was totally a guy's job.
Now what did they need? Building wise. He was there.
