⌦ What to bring
Besides the required wand, textbook, parchment, and quill please bring a baseball glove if you have one. Gloves will be provided to those who do not own one. Girls may wish to wear pants instead of a skirt.

Wearing a suit is not required as you all should be in your Hogwarts uniforms.

All students are welcome and encouraged to attend this lesson. I only ask that you familiarize yourself with my rules before attending - I will know if you have not done so.

Draw and label a diagram illustrating the difference between a meteoroid, a meteor, and a meteorite. You may include other elements discussed in class if you wish - such as an asteroid or comet. This MUST be a drawing done by you using either image editing software (Paint, Photoshop, etc) or by hand. ABSOLUTELY NO DIAGRAMS TAKEN FROM THE WEB WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Pick another song besides those mentioned in class and explain how it relates to astronomy. You may also 'debunk' a song's lyrics like I did about Catch a Falling Star.

For your long term assignment you will be creating and maintaining your very own star in the astrophysics laboratory. There are several different classifications of stars, but you all will be creating yellow stars for this assignment.

A minimum of 8 posts is required to be eligible for full points.

⌦ how do I create & take care of my star?
The first thing you MUST do EACH time you enter the laboratory is to put on your white lab coat and put on your protective goggles - both of these are in a closet to the right as you enter.

Also, never EVER take your star in a jar out of the laboratory - not even when you have finished taking care of it. When you are done please just leave it on the counter in the laboratory and I will take care of the rest.

▸getting started

• write your name on a label and place it on your jar
• clean your jar - Scourgify & Tergeo work best
• add one table spoon of powdered helium & hydrogen each to the jar and put the lid on it
• perform Fingere Elementi to change the powdered elements into gases. The two gases will compress on their own within the jar to produce a star.

▸taking care of your star

• you should use the following spells to care for your star.
  • ⌦spell to control temperature
    your star will turn blue when it is too hot & red when it is too cold
    ▸incantation :: Dextrini Potitus
    ▸wand movement :: jab with a flick upwards to increase and flick downward to decrease
  • ⌦spell to increase helium
    your star will glow red when there is too much helium
    ▸incantation :: Cumugasalis
    ▸wand movement :: two flicks
  • ⌦spell to decrease helium
    your star will glow red when there is too much helium
    ▸incantation :: Deminugasalis
    ▸wand movement :: two flicks
  • ⌦spell to increase hydrogen
    your star will begin to glow white when it is running out of hydrogen
    ▸incantation :: Crescere Hydrogenenii
    ▸wand movement :: tight circle drawn in the air followed by a jab. Circle movement on the Crescere and jab on Hydrogenenii

• sing to your star
• just show your star some looooooove - BE CREATIVE!

If your star turns black then it is dead and you will have to start the assignment over. Please come see me in my office if this happens to you. And no, you will not lose house points if this happens to you.

Please also be sure that you have completed your long term assignment before attending the lesson as it will play a vital role.

OOC : there is no requirement for you to do the assignment and may participate in the lesson regardless. If you choose not to do it (those points would look nice in those hourglasses though, no?), simply pretend as though your character has.

⌦ Option One
GO STARGAZING! That's right. Go out on the grounds and do some stargazing and tell whatever professors give you a hard time that you have my permission to be out after hours if needed. Just no wandering into the Forbidden Forest, yeah? I want you to stargaze and specifically try to find YOUR star and the asterism that you created in the lesson.

OOC :: 5 post minnimum required

⌦ Option Two
DRAW ME A PICTURE! Remember this chart from the lesson? I want you to create one of your own! Only catch is that you CANNOT use the life cycle of a human to illustrate. Like flowers? Use the life cycle of a rose to illustrate! More of a creature person? Go ahead and use your favorite to make a chart. The possibilities are endless!

OOC :: as always, work must be your own. You can hand draw or use a computer program to complete this assignment.

⌦ Option Three
WRITE ME A STORY! As is often the case, constellations and asterisms come with their own unique mythology. Make up a myth about your asterism. Don't forget to give your star some significant meaning as well!
