This was the only thing that the former Appleby Arrows Chaser wanted, really. And she was more than willing to invest plenty of her savings into the good cause of the library's restoration - and that carpet.
She was a superb flyer, of course. She could fly a broom in her sleep. But a carpet? A FLYING carpet? That was something she could use in her lessons, something she could use as an incentive for her best students, or something that she was sure Max would enjoy trying out elsewhere - with permission from the Ministry of Magic, of course. But... didn't she see the Minister himself over yonder? Couldn't she just ask him, especially since the man had won the bid on HER broomstick? They were practically besties now.
So it was perfect. And Professor James meant business. She had the money AND pure intentions. Sharing the flying carpet with others was the best way to go about it, right?
So she went for it. And she wasn't going to back down. She would hang around the auction table all night, if she had to.

Nope. Nope. Not happening. Sorry, champ, this flying carpet was already reserved for the good of HOGWARTS. Didn't this guy care about the students? As the man stepped away from the table, the flying professor hesitated, pressed her lips together, and dove back at the auction sheet.
In the back of her mind, she could hear the chants of her students cheering her on. They wanted it, too.

There was no backing down without a fight. The point of no return. Suddenly curious, Professor James eyed the man - what did he do? What was his profession? How did he have THAT many galleons to spare, anyway?
Maybe he was some kind of secret agent who was planted at this table just to raise the bid so Erin would donate more. It was a good cause, of course, so she didn't mind, but she couldn't help but peer suspiciously at the man for a moment before approaching the sheet once more.

All right, Annie wanted one of these. She could just SEE her and Ethan and Davie traveling around the world on a magic carpet ride. It'd be like a WHOLE NEW WORLD......! 
Anyway. Ahem. She noticed that both Erin - the FLYING INSTRUCTOR, of all people - and some other person - had both bid before her. No matter, she had galleons to spare. She'd been behaving herself and not buying any jewelry at all for months since that whole... brooch fiasco.

Erin eyed the pair of them - Annie in particular. Did... she really want to keep bidding against one of her oldest, most beloved friends?
On one hand, Annie might let her borrow the carpet. Maybe. If she asked really nicely and offered to shine all of her shoes for a year or so. On the other hand, Annie might cringe at the thought of letting other people ride something she bid a hefty amount of galleons on. It could be a hit or miss situation, really.
So Erin continued to bid, avoiding eye contact with Annie out of fear of the woman being upset with her. She had been there first, right? Wasn't that a justifiable claim? The Headmistress wasn't going to... get brutally competitive or anything was she? They were still friends? This was all... friendly?

Erin was very tempted to ask the man if he had a child at Hogwarts... and, if so, if he would like for his kid to learn about a flying carpet in class and be able to RIDE ONE. With the Minister's PERMISSION. That would be FUN, wouldn't it? Wouldn't it, sir?
But she decided against it, kept her calm, smiley disposition, and casually meandered over to the bidding sheet once more.
Consistency was key.

The bidding for the professors was over. That meant there was little time left.
Which also meant it was time to go in for the win.
With the smallest smile playing upon her lips, Professor James scooted toward the twelfth table once more and scribbled onto the parchment.
It would be worth every galleon.

Eyeing the sheet at the table once more, Erin was quite smitten to realize the man's bids were not actually increasing by much. So... perhaps the price was getting too high for him, it seemed?
